My friend, Eric, is in DC this week, and I'll be heading in to The District in a few to pick him up. We're going to do some culinary and cultural exploration today, so to speak. Basically, we're going to check out two restaurants, one Chinese (Chengdu cuisine) and one Vietnamese.

George, pixellation on BDs is almost always caused by something very minor, like a sticky fingerprint or the like.  Just look at the bottom of the disc under a good light and you may find the answer to your problems.

In any case...

I need to do some stretching, and then get ready for the drive into DC - which I'm hoping won't be too bad on the Holiday Monday. Thankfully, I don't need to drive near any of the big malls in the area.

Laters...

We have LOTS o'dessert leftovers here.  We still have Ginny's Ecumenical Pecan Cake, which was delish (but not quite what I was expecting--I thought it would have a "crust" of carmelized pecans, shows you how much I can deign from reading recipes), as well as an equally delish apple cake that Betsy made yesterday for the big dinner with company we had at our place last night.

Speaking of which, the family who visited brought a very fun game we had never played before, though many of you probably have:  Taboo.  You have to describe a word without using a list of words underneath the word you're attempting to get your team to guess, and of course that list includes every descriptor you think of off the top of your head.  :)

BK, thanks for your rant on the a generation's over-adulation of mediocre movies from the eighties.  GOONIES is one of the most inexplicably beloved movies of that generation and it is a bad imitiation of bad Spielberg at his worst.  Unfortunately, most of these eighties lovers are now running the studios.  I recently saw the new CLASH OF THE TITANS.  The old eighties CLASH was an example of a tired, mediocre Harryhausen being left behind the times; but this new CLASH makes Harryhausen's CLASH look like a masterpiece by comparision.

You try getting someone to say Atlantic Ocean without using these words:  water, body, coast, east, Pacific, and several others I can't recall right now.  I said "A large mass of liquid next to New York."  They got it.  :)

TOD - Christmas Eve, we had a late lunch/early dinner at Panera before the service at Rob & Mary Linda's church.  I had creamy tomato soup and chicken cobb salad.  Later in the evening, Richard and I had popcorn and I ate the apple they threw into our order at Panera.

Our Christmas Day dinner was much more traditional:

Sliced ham and turkey from Honey Baked Ham
Cheesy potatoes
Green beans, slow-cooked with some ham
Cinnamon pears
Lemon/lime jello pineapple cottage cheese surprise
Challah
Chocolate bourbon pecan pie, made by Mary Linda
Assorted cookies, made by me (actually, everything was made by me, except the pie - no wonder I'm tired!)

We are going to brave the crowds and take the kids to Ikea today to get Gabe a nightstand.  We have never been to an Ikea before, so we're looking forward to it.

You were busy!  My Mom used to make a huge Christmas Eve dinner (much like the one you have listed above), and then she'd tell us we were on our own for Christmas Day, it was her day off!  :)

I wouldn't even attempt IKEA the day after Christmas.

But then, I wouldn't attempt any store the day after Christmas.

I just spent the last half hour or so reading this story, whose Part 1 is in this morning's Oregonian.  Heartbreaking, but also an amazing testament to "six degrees."  It probably won't mean a lot to you non-NWers, but if you read it, the story of the kid who shot the police chief has been front page news here for months, and the Benson family is kind of like Portland's "Ewing" family.

Also, the "baby home" referenced in the story (which is being torn down) was where my girlfriend worked for years when we first moved to Portland back in the late 1970s.

TOD:

Noche de los Rabanos (Dec. 23)
Pork pate with bourbon-soaked prunes and various crudites
Grilled lamb chops
A vegetable medley with fennel, zucchini, sun-dried tomatoes and more
Bok choy.
Fruit and cheese
Four excellent wines, including an amazing Turley Zinfandel.

Christmas Eve:
A smorgasbord of appetizers including, Canadian Christmas pies, duck rillettes, tapenade, charcuterie and cheeses
Red Lentil Soup
Seafood Crepe
Mandarin Orange Granita
Boeuf Bourguinon with homemade bread
Buche de Noel complete with the meringue mushrooms
A Cherry Christmas cocktail and plenty of champagne and wines plus a taste of Peppermint Mocha Kahlua

Christmas:
An antipasti plate with various cheeses, salami, olives and Portuguese sardines
Veal osso bucco with plenty of marrow in the bones (my favorite flavor of the weekend)
Mashed potatoes
Green beans with prosciutto
Sauteed zucchini with Parmesan
Tiramisu
Two Barolos and two ice wines, including one made from apples

I indulged in at least a little of everything but the buche. After a five-course sit-down dinner, I just didn't have room. But it was beautiful.

Amen. Except for Martha Plimpton, I can't think of a good thing to say about "Goonies." I never wanted to see "Fright Night" because the reviews then were dreadful and don't seem to be much better now.
