CD: the advance copy of the new Guy Haines Album, NEW GUY IN TOWN, of course!

Tomovoz, Jack Nitzsche, if it is the same Jack Nitzsche who wrote movie scores and was married to Buffy St. Marie (won an Oscar, I believe) bought my old house in Beachwood Canyon under the shadow of the Hollywood sign.  I had to leave a round bed I had as part of the deal.   I think he used it for his Hollywood pied a terre when working here.  He was a very weird guy.  There was an episode of the TV show COPS, showing the Hollywood division, pulling him over when he was drunk, cruising Hollywood Blvd, with a gun, looking for unsavory types.  Alas, I believe he passed away a few years back.

That's the one.  He died in 2000. MBarnum will no doubt know that he arranged Bob Lind's "Elusive Butterfly"  and co-wrote "Needles And Pins".

Scores included "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" and "Officer And A Gentleman"..

For those fans of "The Big Chill", Nitzsche did choral arrangements for the Rolling Stones "You Can't always Get what You Want".

Nothing in the DVD or VCR but since the weather has cooled, I will probably watch more Sopranos episodes this weekend.

CD Player: In honor of Anthony's opening tonight, I've got A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (the Bay Cities reissue from Mr. BK's early company)

I also have Stop the World, I Want to Get Off OCR, Sugar OCR, Sweeney Todd OCR, the Rodgers and Hammerstein revue by the Roundabout Theatre, It's a Grand Night for Singing, produced by the inimitable BK and finally, the OCR of one of the best musicals ever written, Follies

And that, my friends, is my listening material for the morning. In the afternoon, at 2pm, I will listen to Ball Over Broadway on BBC Radio 2 and then 90 minutes after that I will head home to change and prepare for a friend's birthday outing. Just a simple dinner and since it's summer and stays light till around 8:30, we may go over to the West Side and walk along the Hudson River.

Good morning, all!  This blast of cool weather has me very lethargic and lazy today.  I've got a lot of things to do:  the recording office, some DARLING OF THE DAY work here, and then THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA tonight.  When I get home, I have to wrap a few Christmas gifts that have been sitting here since December; I'm seeing their recipients tonight at the theatre, so we'll have Christmas in June.

TOD:
DVD:  I got three Netflix movies still waiting for me
CD:  French operetta, BEGGAR'S OPERA (Britten version), SEVENTEEN, ALICE IN WONDERLAND (Bambi Linn/Eva Le Gallienne), UP IN CENTRAL PARK
VCR:  I'm waiting for Jed's shaving video

Sorry I have been errant and truant this week; I have felt like Ol' Man River this week, and it has even gone through my head several times (usually the "Sick of trying..." line but sometimes just the rollin' along).

CD:  Original (as in the first and real one) cast of "Flower Drum Song,"   Sally Mayes' "Boys and Girls" among others.

DVD- "The Aviator"  I'm not a Leonardo DiCapprio, but he's going a better job than I expected.  The movie is quite gorgeous to watch, though.

VCR--"Andy's Gang" with Froggie the Gremlin ("Hiya Kids, Hiya!  I feel good, I do; I do.")

Yesterday DR George joked that we (der B and myself) should kidnap his daughter and take her to a Log Cabin meeting.  Thing is, der B has already taken her to a meeting, a few years ago.  He took her husband, as well.  Everyone thought her husband was with der B.  They thought der B's daughter was a lesbian.

Her husband enjoyed himself.

Reading about DR George's dilemma of house sitting at a house without a DVD player isn't as weird as I would have thought two weeks ago.

In helping my brother set up a home theater in his house, I found out he has NEVER had a DVD player. The one he buys for his home theater will be his first! Amazing how some of us keep up with technology, especially a technology that is obviously replacing an older technology (VHS) rapidly (even basic DVD recorders are coming under $200 now) and others just couldn't be bothered.

My parents did not want (and never had) a VCR!

Just read the VARIETY review of the new movie version of BEWITCHED and sad to say it's a pan. (A film critic friend of mine who also has seen the movie passed along his opinion that it's a grave disappointment).

I hate that such a lovely TV show, one of my fondest remembrances of my youth, has not been done justice in a movie version. Thankfully, the DVDs of the show are now starting to make their appearances, so I'll stick to them.

Beware that the BEWITCHED 1st season boxed set is being offered in a colorized edition as well as the original black and white.

We're both torked off enough with her, as it is.  She thinks our car smells too much of dog, and it makes us smell like dogs.  That's why she sprayed our car with some anti-smell stuff.  The car now smells like a French whorehouse.

SWW I suggest you clean that stuff out of your car.  There is a good chance at least one of the dogs is allergic to it.

To get oders out I use Odo Ban which I mail order.  If you have a Sam's Club you can find it there.  It is a natural enzyme cleaner.  Another option is to sniff various enzyme cleaners for dog oders and buy one you like. ;D

I see BK hasn't arisen from his round, Hollywood (and possibly rotating?) bedstead yet.

What side does one sleep on in a round bed?

I, myself, have been up since 5:30 a.m., PDT.  I got up with the birds....well...with the bird that lives a couple of units below me.  That little sucker chirps his heart out first thing in the morning when his master takes the cover off his cage which is next to their balcony door.   It is so joyous that it has never been irritating.

I've been out and about, bought coffee, took clothes to the cleaners, went grocery shopping, and I got back home at 7:30 a.m.

The whole day is ahead of me waiting to be explored and discovered.

Pondering the possibilities, I just think I need a nap first.

In other news...

I actually received and e-mail (finally!) this morning from the local contractor, and shortly after reading it, I received a phone call (finally!!!!!!) from him too.

In short...

-I'm on payroll for the rest of the run.
-I'll get the "missing half" during the last week.
-And other assorted details and "mysteries" were also worked out and discussed.

I'm still a little "annoyed", but at least I know where things stand right now.  And, financially speaking, it will all even out eventually.  Hoo and Ray!

And best of all, I now know for sure that I can comfortably "survive" in NYC for at least two months right off the bat!

OH!

Are you browsing from with AOL?  or using Safari? Mozilla? IE for Mac? Camino?  (which I'm liking a lot - it's Mozilla specifically for Mac)

I do know that the AOL browser for Mac will cause a lot of streaming clips to be downloaded since most streaming clips are configured for IE (PC) and AOL's browser doesn't function properly in that regards all the time.

Good, and make sure Jessica Skerritt is there, too!

Problem solved re streaming video and audio.  Spoke to AppleCare (the best tech support group EVER) - they basically said what Jose said - Windows Media Player and Mac don't work well together.  He suggested I use Internet Explorer to try and view, and that worked perfectly, so we'll put that info on the site.  We may also add Quick Time as an option.  So, I finally watched the whole video clip, which is lots of fun, AND you get to hear more song selections from After the Ball.

*Just keep in mind that Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player are still Microsoft products, so they're still not that compatible on a Mac.  I've had no real problems with Windows Media Player for Mac, but IE for Mac is admittedly a little buggy.

However, they're both free downloads, so...

Well... Well... Well...  (ah, a She Loves Me reference - but I think I need a few more "wells"...  in any case...)

Funny how these things work out...

First the e-mail and phone call from the contractor...
Then a phone call from the main office in Manitoba...
Then a phone call from the assistant conductor...

I guess it pays to be the squeaky wheel, so to speak.  Or at least to ask for some answers to some questions that were asked weeks ago.

I loved BEWITCHED as a child, and I still hold out hope for the movie.  Perhaps it is not brilliant but merely enjoyable.  I love romantic comedies, and am really looking forward to seeing this one.

I did see one clip with Kristin Chenoweth and she was jumping up and down and screaming. Hopefully the rest of her part will be better (she plays Nicole Kidman's friend, and it's quite funny to watch the tall Ms. Kidman standing beside Kristin).

Time for the News:

Quote
EUREKA, Calif. - Just hours after a moderate earthquake shook most of Southern California, a strong quake struck off the state’s northern coast to become the fourth significant shaker to jolt California this week.

Neither quake Thursday caused serious damage. One person was injured.

A 6.6-magnitude temblor hit about 125 miles off the coast of Eureka around 11:30 p.m. PT, rattling the ocean floor. In the afternoon, a 4.9-magnitude quake struck east of Los Angeles, startling people and knocking items off shelves and desks.

Four significant quakes have hit California this week: A magnitude-5.2 quake shook Riverside County on Sunday, and a magnitude-7.2 quake trembled Tuesday under the ocean 90 miles off Northern California.

Stephanie Hanna, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Geological Survey, said Thursday night’s quake was likely an aftershock from Tuesday’s shaker, which prompted a brief tsunami warning for the entire U.S. west coast and part of Canada. Still, seismologists do not consider it particularly noteworthy that four significant seismic events occurred within a few days in California and off its coast.

Channon Kelly was eating her lunch in downtown Los Angeles when the quake hit.

“I almost jumped out of my seat,” Kelly said. “I’m starting to get freaked out. We’ve had so many in the last week, the one Sunday and then in Northern California. I could hear the windows rattling and feel it all at the same time.”

Los Angeles based  record producer, author and playwright, Bruce Kimmel said . “I heard there was a seven point earthquake in Big Bear. I heard it at Kinko's when I was Fed Exing when some woman on a cell phone said it. However, every time I hear something like that, it turns out to be a two point earthquake or something. No one felt anything. She had nothing right, this stupid, stupid idiot woman. It was centered in Yucaipa, it was 4.9 and there was no damage, and most people weren't even aware of it. This is what drives me crazy about the world in which we live - these hysterical people who mis-hear, misunderstand, or listen to the media, who just report whatever they feel like.”

None of Southern California Edison’s 4.6 million customers lost power.

Well, I lied. After I got lunch started cooking, I sat down with BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK since it's only 81 thrilling minutes, and watched the whole thing in one big gulp. What a wonderful movie to see and love all over again! And to think MARTY won Best Picture of 1955! It's fine, but nothing out of the ordinary (but I will admit I haven't seen it in awhile and might be better than I'm remembering).

BAD DAY has everything - wonderful acting, great scenery, terrific, taut direction. Superb!

I noticed a few blue specks and scratches (obviously Warners did no restoration to speak of on it), but it was just fine looking.

After BAD DAY, I put in POSSESSED and watched the mini-documentary on it. Mostly talking heads, but when the talking heads are Glenn Erickson and Drew Casper, I don't mind them.

Then started up the movie itself, and it looks super! Another winner for the JOAN CRAWFORD COLLECTION!

Vix, are you talking about your clever little insert into the earthquake news clip? I read it, I just didn't post about at the time. You are loved. You are good. You are worthwhile. Just keep repeating that to yourself as you drive along the Long Island Expressway (AKA LIE each letter pronounced as in L I E, not lie, the word).

Have been on the go since ten.  Had a good meeting, then had lunch, then picked up the Haines master, listened to it, gave the mastering engineer my minor notes (all level and bass related), and now he'll do those and get me a finished master, which will be here when I return from Portland.

A few more things to attend to, then I write, then relax.  I'll visit the Kritzerland temp site to see what changes have been implemented.  It's all moving forward quite well, and we're setting up all our accounts at amazon, cdbaby, iTunes, etc.

L'Auberge Du Cheval Blanc -- a 1962 version.

We're busily getting ready for BK's visit to Portland.  We had a great "reality check" run through of the Bacharach revue today, and will have another one tomorrow with the brass players.

BK has had very nice write-ups in The Jewish Review and the Oregonian.

And BK has learned how to redeem a voucher.  This may be the best news of all.  :)

Here are my two Bollywood movies for this weekend...if I actually have time to watch anything.

KAAL (2005) starring John Abraham and some other hindu speaking people. I think it is sort of a "most dangerous game" plot, but I am not sure. I do know there will be some singing and dancing amongst the violence and blood. And I am quite sure Mr. Abraham will take his shirt off several times.

Les poissons, les poissons
How I love les poissons
Love to chop and to serve little fish
First I cut off their heads
Then I pull out their bones
Ah mes oui, savez toujours delice

Les poissons, les poissons
Hee hee hee, haw haw haw
With a cleaver I hack them in two
I pull out what's inside
And I serve it up fried
God, I love little fishes, don't you?

Here's something for tempting the palette
Prepared in the classic technique
First you pound the fish flat with a malette
Then you slash off their skin
Give their belly a slice
Then you rub some salt in
'Cause it makes it taste nice

Zoot alors, I have missed one!

Sacre bleu, what is this?
How on earth could I miss
Such a sweet little succulent crab
Quel Domage, what a loss
Here we go, in the sauce
Now some flour I think just a dab
Now I stuff you with bread
Don't worry, 'cause you're dead!
And you're certainly lucky you are
'Cause it's gonna be hot in my big silver pot!
Tout-aloo mon poisson
Au revoir

Had a nice night of DVDs. First I finished POSSESSED. There were some areas of print damage later in the film, water spot-looking damage that ran on longer than I thought it would. But in the main, the movie looked very good for its age, and I enjoyed it. Joan is never as much fun when she's playing a weakling. The tough Joan is much more enjoyable.

Then, in honor of DRs TCB and Jed, I put in the MGM musical version of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN. It's the first time I've seen it on the new set, and I have to say the larger picture and stunning color were very enjoyable.

With ANNIE GET YOUR GUN looking so smashing, I decided I'd watch a couple of other MGM musicals on the new set that I haven't seen in awhile.

First up was AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, but naturally I only played the  ~ 20 minute ballet sequence. Noticed colors there I had never zeroed in before - orange ballet slippers in one sequence, and Caron's more orange than yellow skirt in the can-can sequence.

It really looked spectacular, and one can only imagine what it would look like now with more state-of-the-art mastering being done on DVDs. This was one of the early DVD releases.
Title: Re:OLD MAN RIVER
Post by: Matt H. on June 17, 2005, 08:06:58 PM
Then I put in the 1951 SHOW BOAT. To say it knocked me out of my chair with its vibrant color would do it an injustice. The colors are rich enough to fall into. I saw a neon green stripe on Gower Champion's pants in that opening number I had never ever seen before, and I've seen SHOW BOAT on the big screen and dozens of times on home video in everything from VHS to laserdisc to DVD. Amazing Technicolor.

I stopped the DVD after that opening number because I want to save the rest of it for tomorrow. Then, I'll return to the world of black and white for ADVISE AND CONSENT.

But I know the next Technicolor movie I'm putting in will be SINGIN' IN THE RAIN.

I'm back from seeing LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA, which I enjoyed mostly for its beautiful scenery, fluid staging,  wonderful costume, and wonderful cast.

I just checked the CD and they've exactly doubled the string section: 12 violins and five celli on CD and 6 violins and 2 celli in the theatre.  They were wrong to increase the strings; the chamber sound of the  pitorchestra is just perfect, perhaps too much piano noodling and too many timpani/cymbal crashes for such a delicate piece but siuch is the nature of the power ballad these days.

I enjoyed the score much more in performance than as a listening experience; now that I've seen the piece, I think now I'll enjoy the recording more, and there are several wonderful numbers .   I think my favorite, and the best scored, is "Dividing Day."

I liked the cast, even my bete noir Miss Clark, who seems to be always on the verge of a grandiose "I'm a star now" performance, although in Act Two she has a marvelous line that moved me greatly.  A person behind me said rather loudly at one point "she sounds like Katharine Hepburn," with which I cannot totally disagree; she's channeling several grandes dames.  The other principals -  Patti Cohenour, Mark Harelik, Matthew Morrison, Sarah Uriarte Berry, Michael Barresse, and Kelli O'Hara - all have wonderful moments, as does my friend Beau Gravitte in a basically unsympathetic role.

And it is a stunning production.

From an Australian site:

Two of my favourite people: on from Oz and one from UK!

Anthony Warlow and Lesley Garrett

Reviewer John Slavin

Hamer Hall
April 22

In one of his more recent excursions, as the Lord High Executioner in The Mikado for Opera Australia, Anthony Warlow injected into the role a cocktail comprising every British comedian from Frankie Howerd to Ronnie Barker. Something of that versatility is at work in this delightful musical soiree.

Warlow's program is dotted with some cunningly knowing pastiches. Singing Just in Time, not only does his elegant phrasing remind one of Sinatra but his rhythms make the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - conducted by Philip Ellis - sound like the backing of Nelson Riddle. Nobody's Baby is as smooth and as sexy as Perry Como's crooning.

If there is a tendency to indulge in what I call the Broadway bellow (miked) in numbers such as Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar or This is the Moment from Bricusse's Jekyll and Hyde, Warlow is capable of vocal subtleties, which he demonstrates in La Ci Darem la Mano from Don Giovanni. His co-star Lesley Garrett has a nice turn here in bug-eyed, not-quite-innocent innocence.

Each time she joins him on stage she gives Warlow sexual charisma and lightens his intensity the way Rogers did Astaire. Their lyrical treatment of Phantom of the Opera's Music of the Night is a showstopper. Garrett is a generous performer. She announces at the beginning of the recital that she's the warm-up whereas Warlow is the national treasure.

Her reach of style, however, is impressive. She makes HenryMancini's Moon River sound like an unfamiliar opera, then sings O Mio Babbino Caro from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi and miraculously transforms it into an intimate confession. She has faultless legato and a beautiful, broad-ranging tessitura that might be the envy of many a prima donna. Witty and playful, she possesses the sweetness of Julie Andrews and the vocal reach of Kiri Te Kanawa.

The audience loved it all and at the end gave the pair a standing ovation. Who says good singing can't fill a hall?

This was one enchanted evening of atmospheric music-making.

More?

Ok! Since everyone's asking for it:

Warlow steals the show
Matthew Westwood, The Australian,April 15, 2005

Lesley Garrett and Anthony Warlow
Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House, April 13

A LITTLE bit of glamour and flirtation goes a long way on stage, and Lesley Garrett and Anthony Warlow look great together. The Yorkshire lass and Wollongong boy have a terrific rapport with each other and their audience.

Their duet from Don Giovanni, La ci darem la mano, was a hot little number, with Warlow the suave Don and Garrett his slightly-too-eager Zerlina. In a program that encompassed two centuries of musical theatre, this Mozart was closer to Broadway than Vienna. The Concert Hall was in entertainment mode for the evening: the singers as well as the Sydney Symphony were amplified.

Garrett, a celebrity in Britain with her own radio and television shows, has an appealing soprano with the versatility for opera and music theatre. Her voice has warmth, personality and, when required, great power -- as she showed in her encore, the spiritual On Holy Ground. There was an unevenness of tone at the extremes of her voice, in the upper register and in her pianissimo effects.

Warlow stole the show with his first number, This is the Moment, from the Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse musical Jekyll and Hyde. Such is Warlow's dramatic and musical range that each of his solo numbers was delivered as a kind of mini-musical, complete and satisfying in itself.

His Soliloquy from Carousel and Gethsemane from Jesus Christ Superstar were compelling from beginning to end. Even with music as bereft of ideas as Music of the Night from The Phantom of the Opera, Warlow conjured character and spookiness. He confirmed again why he is regarded as one of the world's leading exponents of the Phantom.

I have returned from a wonderful birthday celebration for a dear friend. I'm rarely up this late but they just left. We ate at a place called Philipe Marie in the Village. A most excellent find. The service was excellent, the wait staff and greeter were kind and friendly without being too much. The food was wonderful. I had a grilled salmon, one friend had Oak Plank salmon, which was served on an oak plank. Both the salmons came with grilled vegetables. Another friend had lamb shank and the Birthday Boy had medallions of boar, yes, boar. We also had 4 appetizers, coconut breaded shrimp w/pinapple and cabbage, steamed artichoke with dipping sauce, fried green tomatoes with mildly spicy mayonaisse (sp) and a walnut, lettuce and berry salad in a mild vinegarette. We didn't have dessert there, since we were planning on a trip to Magnolia, just a block away, though Philip Marie does have nice looking desserts. The next I go I will leave room for dessert. Magnolia was far too busy. The line was out the door and around the block with about a 20 minute wait. Too late for 10pm so we sauntered up Hudson to a rather new place called Mary's Off Jane. Great late 50s/early 60s decor and wonderful desserts. I had a berry crumble/crisp, two had Ice Box Cake and the Birthday Boy had a lime cake with cream frosting. We took it all to go and walked back here to the apartment where we had tea and dessert. Umm, umm, umm. I will return to Mary's Off Jane. Don't know how the food tour will work out in October, but it's a place to keep in mind.

And now, since it's 12:48 EST, I shall mosey from the desk chair to the bed. I will speak to Anthony tomorrow and find out how the opening night of the show went. I'm sure it was fine since the two previews went over very well.

And that, my friends, is that.

Ben is Mary's Off Jane near Tavern on Jane?  Your evening sounds delightful.

I'm still waiting for the Direcway guy to leave and for our TV connection to be restored.  I hope we didn't haven TiVo set to program anything tonight.

I want to go to bed!  It must be worse for the guy who is kind enough to continue working.

No one here for me to complain to.  I really want to go to sleep-getting closer to my goal.  One TV receiving, one to go.

My mistake.  I thought we are going through this hassle for a better internet connection.  Nope, we are doing it for high definition on the TV’s.  LOL at the moment I don’t give a …. about high definition, only sleep.

How did I discover my error you ask, our internet connection was out again.

He left!

Still waiting for the second TV to work.  To add to our fun, our new phone keeps flashing an extension is in use and it isn't.  We often have this problem but this time I think TiVo is using it.

Off to get ready for bed. :)

I'm back from my evening of debauchery.... NOT!

At no time during the evening did a drop of alcohol cross my lips.  However, some ice cream did, so...

:)

I picked my friend, Andy, up at work, and we headed over to Tysons Corner so that he could exchange his new cell phone that he had bought earlier in the week.  And he also wanted to get his hair cut.  Well, he wasn't able to exchange his cell phone since he didn't have the proper credit card on him - the one he bought it with, but he was able to get his hair cut.  Whilst getting his hair cut, I headed over to Williams-Sonoma to do some browsing.  They were introducing some of there summer product lines - grill tools, etc. - and they also had a new batch of gourmet olive oils too.  So, of course, I sampled some of those.  Some truly wonderful varieties - each very distinctive and flavorful.  Then when I headed back to the Hair Cuttery, Andy was still getting his hair cut, so I headed next door to the small Italian place that happens to have and outside ice cream counter.  So, I got a small cup of spumoni - and they make it in-house there too!  Very good.  And by the time I was finished with my ice cream, Andy was done getting his hairs cut.  -And he happened to get a very good cut this time round too from a very nice stylist.

Then we proceeded to wander around the mall for a while.  I bought some t-shirts and polos at Foot Locker - basically "disposable" clothing - 3 for $20, 5 for $20.  Andy ended up over at the New Balance store where he gave the clerk a pretty workout going back and forth from the stock room.  We even talked about just walking out of there without him buying anything.  -I lost track after pair number 6 came out. ;)  But he did end up buying a pair - some really nice cross-trainers - and then we headed on down to DC to get dinner.

-Exciting, huh?

I suggested we go to Matchbox.  He had never been there, and I haven't been there since they introduced the new menu.  When we got there, the hostess said there was about a 45 minute.  We put our name on the list, then walked around Chinatown for a bit, before heading back to the restaurant about 15 minutes later.  We were then seated about 5 minutes after that.  :)

*Apparently, there were a lot of people headed to the 8:00 movies around the corner, so the tables were turning over faster than usual.  -I'll have to keep that in mind for next time.

We were seated up on the third level - a place I've never been.  It used to be the smoking section - which is why I never sat up there - but, apparently, the whole restaurant has gone non-smoking except for at the bar.  -However, now that I think of it, I don't even recall cigarette smoke at the bar.  Hmm....  *I have nothing against cigarette smokers, but I do find it annoying to eat a meal with a hint of cigarette smoke interfering with the tastes the chefs and cooks have concocted in the kitchen.  -And I've also noticed that chefs and cooks who smoke themselves have a tendency to over season - especially over salt - their dishes.  -But that's something for egullet.com...

For dinner, Andy and I split an order of Mozzi Carrozzi - which is basically their rendition of spiedini - bread, cheese, basil and tomatoes fried up real good!  And then we split a pizza - literally.  We got a large - 1/2 Chicken Pesto, 1/2 Pepperoni.  A very good dinner.

And we ended up having some unintentional entertainment courtesy of the people sitting on either side of us.  The young man and young woman to my right, Andy's left, were discussing almost everything under the sun - religion, politics, education systems, politics, finance, politics.  It truly was interesting in a "what kind of dinner conversation is this?" way.  It never got heated, but each of them seemed to have very specific views.  Andy really seemed to get a kick out of the young gentleman's platitudes.  "Congress??  That's not politics.  They're totally different things." was one of the memorable quote of the evening.

On the either side of us was a couple of "bears".  Two big, brawny bearded men.  They were discussing their upcoming trip to Europe, and whether or not they should take a cruise on the Danube, or opt for an all-inclusive deal in Italy.  However, the big point of discussion of the evening was the selection of the appetizer.  "Do you really want to get the mini-burgers again?"  So... after ordering the Meatball and Pepperoni Roll for their appetizer...  "Ohhh... They got the mini-burgers.  -Look, they got an order of six of them.  -Wow, that's a big plate of mini-burgers...."  -Needless to say, Andy and I were glad we did not order the mini-burgers - we almost did - for we surely would have had an admirer sitting at the table next to us.

However, in the one gentleman's defense, they would have got their appetizer faster if they had ordered the mini-burgers, since they don't have to be queued up for the wood-burning oven below with the pizza orders.  But their Meatball and Pepperoni Roll was coming up the stairs as we were leaving.  "They're waiting for it!"
