DR JRand, concerning your comments about AMERICAN IDOL last night, celebrities have numerous ways to be introduced to the public, and in my eyes, IDOL allows the American viewing public a three or four month window to get to know some talented young singers and decide if what they have to offer is something of value. In the cases of Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken, the multi-platinum albums each has sold and the concert venues they have packed seem to suggest that at least a portion of the public liked what they saw.
If she hadn't won the Miss Burbank contest, Debbie Reynolds might not have been seen by that Warner Bros. talent scout and signed to a contract (later bought out by MGM).
If she hadn't won Ted Mack's Amateur Hour, would Patsy Cline have become known to millions of people? Maybe, maybe not.
In today's world, it doesn't always require talent to become a celebrity. Many famous people didn't win contests to become famous. But AMERICAN IDOL is merely one portal through which some may walk into the limelight.
