Well, you've read the notes, the notes were full steam ahead, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - there, I've said it and I'm glad.
-
And the word of the day is: SIMULACRUM!
-
1st page-it doesn't matter-but I'm excited anyway-happiness!
-
*scampers off to www.dictionary.com*
-
Oh, that's what it means.
-
TOTD: Songs Of New York (Book-of-the Month records)
DVD - Season one episodes of "Spooks" aka
MI5.
-
I think a Mr Simulacrum was "Keyboard #3 for "Lestat".
-
Wow I forgot it was Friday. Don't have any DVD planned. I have however been playing the video game NIBIRU. Interesting game. puzzle solving type. Graphics not the best. Example: A character standing in a rainstorm and not even getting wet.
CD in car: at the moment the original cast of Company
-
And the word of the day is: SIMULACRUM!
Casey would have waltzed
With the strawberry blonde,
But her heart wasn't in it that night
And the result was a mere SIMULACRUM of what a waltz should be.
You could say, she was just going through the steps.
-
OK, I'm up, I'm up!
Jeez, it's my day off, and I'm still up this early. Bleh.
There's a reason for my being up, though. Fletcher, our Dalmatian pony (der B's term, because he's that large) had an epileptic fit, falling off of der B's bed and lodging himself between the bed and the bookcase, which probably helped keep him from hurting himself.
It's been quite a while since Fletcher had his last fit, that we know of. For some reason, the synapses (synapsi?) in his brain fritzed, and he spent about five minutes de-frying.
He's fine now, and was very grateful for our attention, washing der B's face, my face, and the faces of the four other doggies, all of whom had crowded around in concern.
It's just that it's hard to get back to sleep after something like that.
Hard for me, that is. Fletcher is right beside me as I type, content in his own doggy dreamland.
-
Good morning, good day! A work day for me. Oh well.
I think we used to do a football cheer that had Simulacrum as part of it.
-
Vibes for Fletcher & friends.

TOD:
CD - White Christmas cast album
DVD - FORBIDDEN PLANET & FLOWER DRUM SONG
VCR: Nada
DR EDISAURUS I am appalled - APPALLED - that you are unable to watch AVENTURERA!!! I can only say that the wait will be worth it..... And continue to imagine Ninon Sevilla dragged upstairs by her hair, while wearing a lovely sequined dress....

Best choice replacement vibes for Mr BK and the BRAIN.

DVDs -
We've got a whole pile of DVDs through which we're working our way. For example, der B watched some of the bonus material that came with The DaVinci Code last night, before we settled in for Ugly Betty.
Myself, I've started running through the sixteenth season boxed set of Doctor Who, the season Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor and Mary Tamm's Romana spent chasing around the galaxy in pursuit of the Key to Time. I enjoyed the first story, The Ribos Operation, much more than I did when I saw it on PBS years ago. I've now started on Douglas Adams' The Pirate Planet. And it's particularly fun to watch the serials chapter by chapter, as they were intended to be watched, rather than as "movies" running everything together the way PBS showed them years ago.
BOOKS -
I've completed the first section of Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, a screamingly funny portrait of industrial food. Screamingly, because it's both funny and scary at the same time. Who knew that so much of our processed food came from corn? Even vegetarians aren't exempt, if they're eating anything that's been manufactured. If you get a meal from McDonald's and eat it in your car, you're eating corn. The burger? Corn-fed beef (cows don't naturally eat corn, they eat grass). The McNuggets? Corn-fed chickens, which are then chopped up and processed, held together with corn products to make up the nuggets. The soda you drink to wash it all down? The second ingredient in the soda, after carbonated water, is High Fructose Corn Syrup, sweeter and cheaper than sugar... particularly after the tariffs imposed on the sugar industry by the corn lobby. Opt for a salad? The Newman's Own Salad Dressing contains still more HFCS, along with "corn syrup, corn starch, dextrin, caramel color, and xantham gum," all of which come from processed corn. Even the fries, which you would think are mostly potatoes, get half their calories from corn oil. Even the car you drive in, while eating all this McProcessed food, is run in part on corn, because of the federally mandated inclusion of ethanol - a mandate that was supported by the corn lobby, of course. (And ethanol creates more pollution than ordinary gas, too!)
I can't wait to find out how Pollan tears apart organically grown food. Didn't we just go through a scare about organically grown spinach?
I regularly prop whatever I'm reading next to my cash register at work. The Ominvore's Dilemma has been getting more comments than any other book since I started at Super G a year and a half ago, at the rate of two or three customers asking/commenting per day. I don't think it's just because of it's striking cover, either, because several of the customers have mentioned Pollan's previous tome, The Botany of Desire, as an interesting read.
-
Vibes for Fletcher & friends.
Thank-you.
He's gone back to cuddle with der B. He's fine now, the fit is something in the past and he's over it.
He'll be surfing the kitchen counters again in no time.
-
Good morning, all! I have some BABES work tday, so I think this morning I'll take a break from The Brain for a bit to work on some lyric and libretto checks. Then I will return to The Brain, probably working on the 2nd act tap number. I'm holding off on the ingenue's numbers until the new actress and her keys are settled.
TOD: I'm too involved with The Brain at the moment for much except an occasional CD, but I've been listening to the following:
WHITE CHRISTMAS (new cast album)
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (original cast)
-
As long as I've mentioned Doctor Who, der B has set an interesting task for me - select which stories I really want, which are on a really good sale over at either Amazon or one of the other sites.
I know I want "The Beginning Collection," which contains the first three stories ever broadcast, back around the time Kennedy was assassinated. And definitely Tomb of the Cybermen, one of the few stories featuring the second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) that wasn't destroyed when some fool at the BBC decided to clean out the vaults.
Beyond that, just saying "I want them all" is just being greedy. Sure, I want them all, but I also want to set some priorities. And keeping expenses down is also important, so watching for discounts is key. (Sorry, Jon Pertwee fans, this knocks Inferno out of the running.)
I guess it's time to set up a spreadsheet, so der B can go over the selections.
It's very nice to have someone watching over my spending. (And I also thank him very much for the Christmas Present of Edward Scissorhands, the Ballet, come January. Philly is a wonderful, interesting town, and we should have a great day together.)
-
Good morning, Larry!
Since you're listening to Little Shop (obviously for Brain ideas, crafty devil), what do you think of the other two versions of the score, the Soundtrack and the Revival?
-
Good Morning all!
Today's topic:
DVD: KING KONG Extended Edition Disc Three is in the player, with all of its bonus material (of course there are also bonus features on the other two discs, some of which I took in last night).
THE DA VINCI CODE Disc Two - and I, too, took in the bonus features last night and particularly enjoyed seeing Dan Brown talking about the book, the film and other projects.
RECENTLY (within the past week) WATCHED:
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1962) which I enjoyed tremendously
REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE - ditto. Fascinating film and fascinating of Warner to present the dvd with amber wash not seen since 1967.
FLOWER DRUM SONG - all I can say is that I'm so glad this is finally available and that it looks and sounds as great as it does.
CD PLAYER:
(CAR): DREAMGIRLS, both OBC and Concert; now, if they'd only get around to that release of the film's soundtrack. . .
(HOME): A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION soundtrack
COOL YULE - Bette Midler
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST soundtrack
WALK ON BY - The Best of Dionne Warwick
and Dionne's duets album. . .
ON THE COMPUTER - I keep going to Kritzerland.com and listening to Alice & Emily's tracks from the concert. . .
-
Did we hear the final decision on Dance Break or Dancing While Singing?
-
I have to wear my heavy jacket for the first time this year.
Mercury Retrograde ends today!!!
-
Off to work. Heigh ho
-
Good morning, Larry!
Since you're listening to Little Shop (obviously for Brain ideas, crafty devil), what do you think of the other two versions of the score, the Soundtrack and the Revival?
DR SWW, I loved the film but it's not the show: I miss the original ending, which I luckily have on the suppressed DVD. The arrangements by Robby Merkin sound very simiar to the show's but there may be more instruments. The revival has a big problem for me: Kerry Butler whose adenoidal nasal song stylings make me appreciate the paint-peeling stridency of Betty Buckley all the more.
I knew Jennifer Leigh Warren who was one of the three doo-wap ladies, and I saw the original cast. I love this recording. I generally prefer the original casts because - unlike most revivals - the original creators are around and they usually know more about their show than a lot of the folk rewriting/revising them. That wasn't necessarily the case with LSOH but Ms Butler is a problem for me.

Hey, DR MattH, do you know why VANISHED is not on tonight?
-
Good morning!
Bright but cold here this morning and likely to remain so (and even colder ) in the days ahead. At least, there's no rain or tornados in our forecast!
-
Hey, DR MattH, do you know why VANISHED is not on tonight?
Due to low ratings (less than 3 million watched it last Friday, less than half of who watched it on Mondays when it was there), Fox has pulled it for the remainder of sweeps. They may run the remaining episodes starting in December, but for all intents and purposes, it's been canceled.
-
Friday Media Check:
CD - GOLDILOCKS (OCR)
DVD - CSI: NY (last disc in set)
REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE
CSI: MIAMI - Season 4, disc 1
DVR - last night's CSI
last night's SMALLVILLE
last night's UGLY BETTY
last night's SUPERNATURAL
-
A reminder to fans of MONK:
There is a new episode (Christmas themed no less) on tonight. It features Dan Hedeya as Monk's estranged father. Should be fun.
-
At some point this weekend, I want to go back to the CARS DVD and watch the two included Pixar shorts (one Oscar nominated and one based on a character from the movie) along with the preview of Pixar's next film coming next summer. I skipped all of these things when I played the disc last SUnday.
I also want to put in disc 2 of FLOWER DRUM SONG to watch the special features on it.
-
I am hopeful that I'll get the new cast recording of WHITE CHRISTMAS in today's mail. (It was scheduled to be here yesterday.) If it does come, then add it to my CD list above!
-
Page Two OLIVER & COMPANY Dance!!!
-
Mercury Retrograde ends today!!!
But what does that mean in real terms?
-
Heigh-ho, everyone!
It's FRIDAY!
It's PAYDAY!
It's foggy and misty and coolish and dreary and just plain WONderful here in downtown Oakland this a.m.
-
Fridays are wonderful days of the work week.
Fridays mean that two full days are ahead -- days of freedom from affecting a simulacrum of interest in the mindfarts of a couple of my co-workers.
-
But what does that mean in real terms?
Mercury Retrograde (http://www.astrologyweekly.com/astrology-articles/mercury-retrograde.php) (click on the preceding words to be linked to a site that explains the significance) is an astrological term.
DR JRand56 is becoming more and more "new age-ish" (in the vein of "everything old is new again") working in the book store in Indianapolis....spirit paintings, witch balls and such...and now astrological references.
-
I'm heading down now to get cleaned up for my usual Friday errands.
WBBL.
-
Fans of Vince Guaraldi's "A Charlie Brown Christmas" music will be delighted to learn there is a newly remastered, and expanded, CD of the score to the holiday classic.
I read this somewhere yesterday (maybe it was even here). I got my Amazon.com notification that my order shipped last night.
-
I don't know about anyone else here, but this year's catalog mailout has me up to my neck in the stuff.
I sometimes get 7-9 catalogs in a single day. I've thrown out about 50 or so (three weeks ago) and I now have about 60 in a pile, all unmolested as I fear finding something I can't live without.
-
This time last year, I was SO in a holiday mood.
Now I'm feeling just a bit overwhelmed by the passage of time and things I still have ahead of me. The cards are bought but not addressed or personalized; my shopping is done (if such a thing is EVEN possible!!!); and I find myself in a sort of "hold mode" waiting for the proper time to get things in the mail or whatever. It's like I got things done in record time and decided to rest on my laurels without following through to the final step.
And I know what will happen. Next Thursday, panic will strike and I'll be playing catchup until my flight to the east coast departs SFO on the evening of Dec. 14th.
Sigh.

This Monday looms LARGE:
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Save the Cheerleader...save the World![/move]
-
TOD: Nothing in either my CD or DVD player.
My VHS player, however, is another story. Shows taped Wednesday evening and last night are awaiting my leisure.
My leisure isn't certain it wants to be squandered with any of it, save a couple of shows, but the weekend looms and we shall see what we shall see!

I'm all for some of that "new again" if it applies to these creaky old bones of mine.

Media:
CD: The Danna Brothers' A Celtic Tale, which is some of the most gorgeously orchestrated stuff I've heard in a long time. I highly recommend it to fans of Celtic Music. Their A Celtic Romance is pretty good, too, but not as gorgeous as this one.
DVD: we've been lax, but are about 1/4 way through a Ustinov Poirot episode.
Book: finishing up The Jesus Dynasty, which is not, as may expect from the title, a Da Vinci Code clone, but a very astute historical recounting (the author is a very well known archeologist and historian) of how Paul pretty much took over the early church and suppressed the original teachings of Jesus' family (i.e., his brothers James and Jude).
Michael Shayne, my sister gave us Nbiru to play (she sends all her old games to us), but my kids tried it for about 15 minutes and gave up. It was realllllly slow on our computer and not very "intuitive."
-
I've just ordered Alice and Emily, and I've almost finished the Act Two tap number, which I cannot assemble till the underscoring is ready. It will stay in three parts for a bit yet.
Because of yesterday's storm, I did not to to the NYPL, so I may run to the library around 3 pm.
-
elmore, drop Richard Berent a line - I think he's probably ready to tell you how to assemble the tap number.
I've just hired our new gal - Merrill Grant - the NY singer/actress, who'll be flying out here on Sunday evening and will be put in the show on Monday afternoon.
-
Der Brucer and I are heading off to the movin' pick-a-tcure palace, for the first matinee of a guy saying he's Craig, Daniel Craig. More later.

Could you hit a high point or two of the differences (i.e. suppressed teachings) between Paul and James'/Jude's teachings?
-
Nothing elaborate, mind you...I was just wondering if he chose to downplay something particular or if he "invented" something that never was.
-
Back from a later-than-usual jog and now must do errands. Spent the morning getting our new actress the score and her songs so she can know everything by the time we begin on Monday.
-
Hello One and All and also, All and One
I have gotten a new hairdo, had a maniucre, bought a new skirt and purse and had a job interview and offer.
Thanks for the VIBES!!!! I have another interview on Monday and then I guess I'll decide about this one!
-
I feel a xenophobic/jingoistic rant coming on department: Why the F***&@?((%%% can't companies hire "customer service" people who speak English? Is it toooo much to ask?
It turns out all Qwest MSN customers suddenly had an error message about an hour ago when they sought to sign in to MSN (as I did). Turns out Qwest upgraded the software this morning without realizing the upgrade required a corollary software to make it work. So after thinking my computer's hard drive was dying, reinstalling (with no effect) and then waiting on hold for about 15 minutes, I get Helga von Unintelligible (not her real name :o) who attempts to "talk me through" the software download. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
All fixed now (I found it myself).
There, I feel nominally better. Thanks for listening. ;)

Friday greetings!
Vibes to DR Vixmom!
Media report - CD(car) - audiobook, Intuition, by Allegra Goodman, narrated by Kathe Mazur.

Wow! An offer already. Is it an upward step from what you left?
I think I'll hit the NYPL tomorrow and spend the next hours working on the new key for Miss Grant.
-
Wow, congratulations Vixmom!
And I will bet you are quite stylish with your new hair and duds!
-
LOL JMK,
most of those "customer service" people are living in places far, far away from the United States.
I always chuckle a bit when I get someone on the phone who identifies themself as "Jeff Johnson," when I know for certain that their real name is more like Sameer Singh.
-
Back from errands, and also scored the new DVD of The Conformist - very exciting. I now actually have ninety minutes to myself before leaving for LACC and rehearsal.
-
Back from Freaky Friday Lunch:
Four of us at the Oakland museum. Two of us (i.e., not me or one other person) trying to out-motormouth the other. I just wanted to scream, "Shut up and EAT!"
But food began being shoveled in...and the talking continued to a point where I had to put my hand over my plate lest bits of salmon chowder or meatloaf sandwich began seasoning my Vietnamese chicken rice bowl.
Truly....I was appalled.
-
My goodness, is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?
I must say, our new cast member is short - five feet. It's probably going to be amusing visually, since her beatnik boyfriend is about six feet tall.

Hehe. Sounds like me & my ex-fiance. 5ft blonde, 6ft auburn-haired rockstar looking fella.
-
I had quite the surprise late this morning. My friend Hal called with an offer to take me to lunch, his treat, at a local Italian restaurant I had never been to. We went there for lunch, and it was delicious. But the best things about it were that (1) it was free, and (2) it was such a surprise since Fridays are usually fried chicken day around here.
A welcome change.

I work with a woman whose husband is more than a foot taller than she is...they've been married for more than 20 years without any issues. ;) It works for them! ;D
-
Because lunch ran late, I only had a chance to watch two things from last night.
I began with CSI, an OK episode with idetical twins (who knew nothing about each other) murdered within two hours of each other.
Something happened to Gregg Sanders on last week's show (which I forgot to record) so that now he's being sued by some family due to some testimony he gave in court. It was briefly mentioned during the show but no backstory was offered, so I have no idea what that's about.
-
Next came last night's SMALLVILLE, a freaky story of parallel frequency universes. Clark wasn't around for much of the episode since he had gone off to Seattle to help folks in a weird set of murders happening there. His adventures in Seattle were given short shrift and deserved an episode to itself.
-
While I was watching SMALLVILLE, my friend Jeff was calling from his break at work wanting to talk (and rave) about last night's UGLY BETTY. Of course, I hadn't watched it yet, so we ended up talking GREY'S ANATOMY instead.
UGLY BETTY will be the first thing I watch when I go back down and prepare for the evening's viewing.
-
Jill Hennesy and Jerry O'Connell from CROSSING JORDAN (still on hiatus) are guest starring once again on LAS VEGAS tonight, so I'll watch the show just for them (it promises to be a mystery with them on board).
-
I've completed the first section of Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, . Who knew that so much of our processed food came from corn? Even vegetarians aren't exempt, if they're eating anything that's been manufactured. If you get a meal from McDonald's and eat it in your car, you're eating corn. The burger? My goodness. I wonder if someone's kitchen floor will actually get mopped today!!!
I'm not the only one whose Friday has been freaky.
-
Every day should be fried chicken day....
....if only I thought my arteries could stand it.
-
mazeltov and decision vibes to vixmom
-
I love corn.
And pecan pie cannot be made without corn syrup.
And I adore pecan pie.
BUT...I hate candies made with corn syrup in place of sugar.
It doesn't taste good to me. Store-bought fudges ALL are made with corn syrup and taste nothing like good old homemade fudge made with pure cane sugar.
I love roasted corn and corn-on-the-cob. I love creamed corn, corn chowder and fried corn.
I love corn bread, corn pones and corn flakes.
And I''ll even laugh at a corny joke every once in a while.
-
"Ugly Betty" was a fun, fun show last night. It was Thanksgiving (which is sort of confusing since next week's show -- ON Thanksgiving -- looks to be a new show...unless I misunderstood when the next show will air).
-
We felt MEDIUM was an hour too long & was too predictable. We did appreciate the creativity of the youngest daughter’s dreams. The remaining plots & story lines, while intriguing at times, just didn’t pan out for us & left us wondering “what was the point of that?”
However, we found this week’s episode of BONES wonderful.
Tonight we might watch UGLY BETTY.
-
Vibes to Fletcher!!
Vixmon-Congratulations & continued good vibes for Monday.
-
Today is Friday. That is all I have to say today.

Back from Freaky Friday Lunch:

Hey, you're the one who chose to eat with this crowd.

Re: Corn.
The corn that we humans eat is not the same as the corn that is raised for industrial food. What we eat is either sweet corn, raise specifically for human consumption, or pop corn, again specifically raised.
The corn that is used for corn syrup, starch, and further modified into practically everything comes from hybreds that are specifically raised for a) high yeild and b) resistance to disease. Apparently it tastes like... well, almost nothing. It is to corn what a chicken nugget is to chicken, meaning that it tastes not like chicken but like a nugget.

You got something against corn? Actually I've eaten what we call field corn, it tasted like corn to me. You wouldn't want to eat it when it's hard and dried and ready to be processed though.

Obviously, der B and I have returned from the Casino Royale screening. We were both pleased with the film (although there were a couple of plot points I had to explain to der B, stuff that had flown by during the film and were easy to miss).
It is definitely a reboot of the franchise, much as Batman Begins rebooted the winged rodent. And Craig makes a very good Bond, dangerous and in his own way sexy. That Judi Dench is the only actor to continue from the earlier stuff to this film was a good decision, and she and Craig play well together.
My memories of the book are sketchy, but the film seemed to follow the original storyline very well. It is raw, rough-edged. There are a number of set pieces that, while fantastic, never seem set in a fantasy world. Great cinematography, I thought.
End of report. And I don't think I've included any spoilers.
-
Fletcher is doing very well. Der Brucer and me being with him during his fit helped him a good deal - since a soothing tone of voice wouldn't have been noticed, our stroking him did the trick instead.
-
Yes, the kitchen floor will be mopped in just a few minutes. I thought about doing it this morning the way I've done the other cleaning during the morning this week, but I put it off. Now, I have that awful job staring me in the face.
Ah well, I best get to it!
WBBL.

Oh, DR Jennifer, an update about VANISHED. It's gone for good. The last four episodes will be streamed at FoxOnDemand website. Supposedly, starting in December, Fox is going to show on Fridays at 8 the rest of the JUSTICE episodes that were produced.
-
You got something against corn? Actually I've eaten what we call field corn, it tasted like corn to me. You wouldn't want to eat it when it's hard and dried and ready to be processed though.
We tried that from the corn field next to us in Pennsylvania-YUCK!!! ;D

Matt H-Thanks for the MONK tip. I wanted to see this episode even though we don’t watch the show anymore.
While recording MONK I noticed NUMBE3S is on tonight & we still haven’t watched last week’s episode.
Off to take Sherlock for his last puppy vaccination
-
Good afternoon dear Esteemed, rested, frenzied, decision-making, and guapo BK --
I'm glad that the cast change is decided, notified, and behind you. Hopefully, all will be smoother from here on out with the production.
-
And a lovely good afternoon to all of the equally lovely hainsies and kimlets scattered hither and yon.
And I totally agree with the RANT about "customer service" persons who can't communicate. But then, I happen to think that the word "service" and its meanings and implications, have been tossed out and forgotten by most of business and industry in the U.S. these days.
-
I don't have anything against corn, per se. However, the overproduction of the crop isn't doing us any real good. It's no coincidence that our government's shift from farm subsidies to supporting the rise of industrialized corn took place in the '70s, at the same time that we started to have the increases in obesity and diabetes. The prediction is any child born in the year 2000 will face a one in three chance of becoming diabetic. That's not good, and it is related to the child's diet.
Something else that bothers me, that Pollan doesn't even touch on, is the risks that overdependence upon a single crop can create. If some supervirus were to decimate our corn crops, we will be in serious trouble, of the sort that will make the Irish potato plague look like comedy in comparison. Corn isn't just going into almost everything that we eat. The byproducts have also become important as building materials, as fuel... it has found it's way into everything.
Without corn, we'll end up falling apart, at least as we are now living.
Personally, I'd rather have a few backup plans.

Yes, the kitchen floor will be mopped in just a few minutes. I thought about doing it this morning the way I've done the other cleaning during the morning this week, but I put it off. Now, I have that awful job staring me in the face.
Ah well, I best get to it!
WBBL.
Change is good.

Corn is leading the way for economic recovery in Iowa. With ethanol and bio-diesel being developed, we are paving the way for a great alternative to foreign oil. As a back up here, or actually as a first line of energy production, we also have tons of wind turbins. In the town I used to live in, the city owns 2 wind turbins, the turbins provide all the energy for the school system and they sell the extra energy to the area energy company. There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of turbins across the state on various wind farms. They are a great alternative. Let's see you stop the wind in Iowa!
In the county I live in we are working on being more self sustaining food-wise, as well. We have locally raised beef, lamb, pork, chicken and eggs that are free range, antibiotic free and some is grass fed. It tastes so much better than the stuff you get at the store. Our county is the first in the nation to provide tax incentives to farmers to go organic and all food bought for the county (the jail etc) has to come from local suppliers unless that isn't possible. We have a fabulous organic market - all grown locally or within about 25-50 miles. Of course in the dead of winter the only things you can get are greenhouse grown, but it's a great start
-
You got something against corn? Actually I've eaten what we call field corn, it tasted like corn to me. You wouldn't want to eat it when it's hard and dried and ready to be processed though.
And needless to say, this "southern boy" has been eatin' grits all his life!
And I have a corn-and-tomato casserole recipe that makes my mouth water at the mere thought of it.

I have no idea if this will work!

Guess it doesn't.. Somewhere there is a "Mary Poppins" on Broadway video to watch.

DD dVd sale has been extended to 11/23. If only they would ship free to OZ it would be worthwhile!!

Stop the wind in Iowa? Sounds like the set-up for a lawyer joke!!! ;)

Again, this is about diversity, which is a good thing. Who would have supposed that Iowa would be a leader in such things! Kudos!

Well, I survived the students! There were 2 classes with about 35 students each. Greg came with me because he could bring a different slant to doc making since he's out doing the shooting. or as he said, he goes out fishing, catches a bunch of different kinds of fish of varying quality and brings them home for me to make a meal out of it all.
This wasn't a how-to class...it was about the aesthetics of film. What surprised me was that they were studying "Napolean Dynamite" and the geek archtype and how once nerds were shunned and now they are seen as the smart money-makers, a la Bill Gates. The last day of class they are going to watch scenes from films that the teacher felt like they should see, so he was going to show them part of "Citizen Kane". Whaa???? Boy, times have changed from when I was in school and CK was the Holy Grail!
Most insightful question: "At which point does a documentary become propaganda". My smart-assed answer was that propaganda was a film made from a viewpoint I didn't agree with, and they laughed. But really, you could spend a whole quarter examining that.
Sorta dumb question (I hate to call any question dumb) Why didn't we get real Italians to read S&V's letters instead of Turturro and Shalhoub with their "fake accents"? (This came from a Jamaican woman!)
One woman, from Uruguay, didn't know the outcome of the case and was crying uncontrollably at the end of the film. (Has this become a spoiler?) She really loved it, in fact there was very favorable response all around. When I mentioned that our last film, "The Internationale" was being released on DVD next week, they applauded!
This nice interlude away from our normal work routine took the sting out of the news I heard when I called my partner to report on the repsonse form the class and he told me that we had been rejected by POV. Oh well...
Thanks for all the vibes sent my way. It was quite fun and not scary at all!

Strange it is and strange to say, but after a day of foggy dreariness, the sun began burning away at the marine layer about an hour ago and we now have patches of blue in the western sky....just in time for sunset.

Thanks Ron.

TOTD continued:
Ella Fitzgerald "Gold" (CD).
"Songs of New York" mentioned earlier - some tracks orchestrated by Elmore.
Yesterday's Reference to "Hunchback II" - Skip wrote three(?) of the songs.

Popping in on Broadway
I'll have to check this out at home. We can't view most kinds of on-line video clips at work. :P
-
I just had a slight flashback....and got a little homesick for my youth and olden days....golden days....when I recalled Nancy Sinatra singing "You only live twice...."
Sigh.
-
Now who in hell would EVER have thought Nancy Sinatra would figure into someone's golden oldie remembrances?
I never I would, at any rate!
-
Thanks Ron.
'wekkum!
-
At last...the time is near....
-
...just a few moments before closing curtain....
-
....and QUITTIN' TIME!
-
I'll say when it's quittin' time at Tara.
-
Quittin' time....quittin' time.
-
Thanks for passing along the Mercury Retrograde link, DR RLP.
Long day.....and I just want to sit down and watch TV.
The Jeopardy celebrities tonight are ANNOYING the NTH degree......
I like the lone female.....though.

Dinner time....

Now who in hell would EVER have thought Nancy Sinatra would figure into someone's golden oldie remembrances?
I never I would, at any rate!
The main reason I remember Nancy is because of "These Boots Were Meant For Walkin'". For bizarre reasons.
There was a bar in the San Fernando Valley called Boots, which sponsored the first gay softball team for which I was a scorekeeper. Well, I let slip the name of the bar as the sponsor/team name while I was at work, which raised a few eyebrows. So I told people the bar was called Boots after the song.
Fortunately, a few years later I was ready to be fully out of the closet, and such subterfuges weren't necessary. (This was about 25 years ago, if you need a time reference.)
As it happens, one of the bartenders at Boots, a hunky fellow named Jeff, is now here in Rehoboth Beach. Still hunky, btw, and nice to have as a friend.

Almost time for the Doctor and Rose!
I'll be there...three hours later. :)
-
Well, it's time to go home so I can look around to see if I left my cell phone there! I'm sure I had it last night after rehearsal, but I don't have it with me now! :o
If my phone is there, I'll call my sister to see if she has any home-improvement plans for tonight. A couple more light fixtures have to be swapped out, but since we'll have to turn off the power, that might not be a good idea when it's this dark. ::) I'm sure that there are other things that will need to be done, though.

I’m sorry to say NETFLIX doesn’t have "The Internationale"

George-Good luck finding your phone.

Secrets can eat at one’s soul. My family kept so many because of my mother’s problems. Having the option to choose when to be open is much simpler.
I knew plenty of Jewish folks who changed their names & were careful about who knew they were Jewish.
I knew Black folks who told me I was lucky I could hide my race.
Wouldn’t it be nice if these “differences” didn’t matter?
-
Speaking of corn, have I ranted lately about how Sugar Pops became Corn Pops without and change in the ingredients? Or did I imagine that?
-
TOD: I didn't listen to anything today -- another meeting.

Thanks for listening. ;)
I hear ya!!! Try being nearly deaf and dealing with customer service on the phone....
-
Wind energy and bio-diesel fuels are also growing in ND.
-
Wouldn’t it be nice if these “differences” didn’t matter?
AMEN!!
-
I had a very full evening of viewing. I began with last night's UGLY BETTY, a captivating episode with the ever-wonderful Justin making a PHANTOM OF THE OPERA mask out of a protective sports cup, Betty trying to balance home and work, and Daniel and his infatuations. Also love Marc at the office despite his bitchiness to Betty. Just a delightful series.
-
Heard this on the news tonight:
An election race in Traill County, ND was finally decided tonight with a tennis ball...
-
Sorry I have been E&T... I have had a lot going on... some good and some bad...
-
SUPERNATURAL certainly made me jump out of my chair at a moment when a man's girl friend took on the eerie face of a demon. Made me jump and I kept shuddering for at least half a minute afterwards from the surprise of that ugly scene. Excellent revelations which should power upcoming episodes.
-
I had time to squeeze in a CSI: NY episode from the DVD set. This was the murder of the girl dressed in a mermaid costume. Sad story of a girl pursuing her dreams coming to a bad end.
-
LAS VEGAS was a total waste of time. The show has gotten ridiculous since its first guilty pleasure season. Now, everyone's infested with cases of the cutes, and Jill Hennessy and Jerry O'Connell were totally wasted popping into Vegas in pursuit of a murderer from Boston.
-
not a good day in the post deparment....
-
LAW & ORDER had one of those cases equal in impact to some of those from its glory years. A case where the man is obviously guilty but you could imagine a jury being swayed by sentiment and sorrow in ignoring the law and letting him go. I really enjoyed the episode.
-
Media Check:
DVD: Sex in the City, season 1
VHS: Roots
CD: Carlos Nunez: Irmandades das Estrellas, Gael Force, Usung Sondheim
-
I didn't get my WHITE CHRISTMAS new cast recording, but I did get the first of my DD DVD orders which should set me up just fine for weekend viewing.
-
Might I just ask WHERE IN TARNATION IS EVERYONE??? Puh-leeze, I need more postings to read. However, I'm back for but a moment and must now sup, after which I shall return.
-
And I'm very pleased DD is extending their sale. There are still two or three things I can order though next week isn't as jam packed with new releases as the previous two weeks have been.
-
Tonight's MONK will be the only show left on the DVR to watch tomorrow. Otherwise, it'll be a strictly DVD weekend. Hooray!
-
Thanks for the info on mercury retrograde.
-
Glad to see you back here where you belong, DakotaCelt.
-
Good luck vibes on the recasting choice bk!

It is nice to be back...
Almost done with the paper from heck, have had some nice things happen and dont want to think about the other sad matter. My dad is worsening but he is still being stubborn about things so in a roundabout way that may be a good thing.

NBC SPOILER - I THINK FROM "LAS VEGAS"
MattH - I was flipping stations and just happened to catch a brief snippet about killing a rat on LAS VEGAS, I believe. I couldn't tell - with whom were our sympathies supposed to lie, with the rat killer or the person who berated her for killing the rat?
-
Re: family secrets. My family's Jewish heritage was a strictly verboten subject when I was growing up, due mostly to my father's military career (he was one of the few Jews to make the rank of General in the Army) and traumatic childhood (he was orphaned at a very early age and then was raised by an Orthodox foster family), which my sisters and I think turned him completely off of being Jewish. His brother did in fact change his surname to try to escape anti-Semitism.
DS Betsy is a green energy maven here in the northwest. She is in charge of green power initiatives for Energy Trust, a huge quasi-governmental agency here in Portland.

CSI SPOILER
If you remember a few shows ago ,Greg drove his car into the pack of mask wearing teenager who were beating to death innocent tourists, before being dragged from his car and being beaten himself. One of the boys , the ringleader, ran towards Greg;s car and was hit and killed. At the increst they found Greg not guilty of criminal wrong doing and refused to indict him for manslaughter, however they did not rule the death justifiable, leaving him in a bad situation. The boy's mother and brother insisted he was a wonderful , clean uoright citizen, an honor student and could not have possibly been involved in anything criminal. The brother threatened Greg and the family has started a civil suit to sue hoim for wrongful death.

I think the viewer was supposed to love the rat. It was sort of a pet to the hotel security manager Mike. As I said, ridiculous.
-
Thank you, DR Vixmom, for the update on the Greg Sanders' situation on CSI. I should be able to follow upcoming events with him much more clearly now.
-
Now, I'm heading for bed.
Good night!
-
Matt - Thanks for clearing that up.
-
Thank you all for the good wishes... the job may not be a fianacial step up but I beleive it will prove to be a life style step up... much closer to home, about a 15 minute commute as opposed to one that could be anywhere form 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic conditions.
Also I may be able to arrange my hours so I get off by 4:30.. tnat would definitely be a bonus
Thank you all for the most excellent vibes

and now to bed,,,,

I just returned from CASINO ROYALE. Two movies in one week's time! It sure is nice to have a life again! (Even with all the hours I'm putting in at Sam Morgan's, I still have time to go out evenings and have fun!)
I was apprehensive about both of the films I saw this week, but I'm happy to say that DREAMGIRLS was everything it should've been with Bill Condon at the helm (and typewriter) and that Daniel Craig is a phenomenal James Bond, the film is well-done (if about twenty minutes too long) and I still can't believe that with the torture scene straight out of Ian Fleming's novel that CASINO ROYALE is only rated PG-13; this one scene pushes the envelope more than INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM did!
Very imaginative and appropriate use of Monty Norman's James Bond theme as well. . .

Who sings the title song td?
Madonna's effort was "An All Time Low"
-
Back from dinner and must now sit on my couch like so much fish. Rehearsal tonight was unbelievably amusing for reasons I'll elaborate on in Ye Olde Notes.
-
I’m sorry to say NETFLIX doesn’t have "The Internationale"
Yet!
It will be released on the 21st. I'll ask the distributor about it, too. Thanks for reminding me!
-
Oh, I thought it was something about DR Edi Souris' brother.
:)
LOL! I thought it was that musical, A Souris Line.
-
one of my best friends since I was 16 is 5'2", her husband is 6'5" they have three sons
I had 3 boyfriends in HS and college who were 6'4". (I'm 5'3"). I heard this line more than once: "Height doesn't matter when you're lying down"!
-
Sounds like Vixmom's friend figured that out for herself, heheheh....
-
BK---any interesting questions during your Q&A yesterday?
-
Who sings the title song td?
Madonna's effort was "An All Time Low"
Chris Cornell does the opening theme - no attempt to place the words casino or royale into the lyrics, though.
Madonna and a-ha tie for the worst, IMHO.

Thanks td.
Is "The Look Of Love" given a reference anywhere in the movie?

My computer needed a nap. I painted my nails, drank tea & watched The Devil Is A Woman *AND* The Flame Of New Orleans. I'm really happy that I did.
