Well, you've read the notes, the notes were ripping, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently reading The Randy Vicar and the Slinky.

Here's the meal I had.  From left to right: Cheesy PotatoCakes, 1/4 Rotisserie Chicken, Parmesan Zucchini Spears.  I didn't realize that the zucchini was going to be breaded and deep-fried - I really didn't plan to have that much "brown" on my plate.

And speaking of dessert...

Our waitress suggested the side of ice cream since the cake was "really rich".  However, the cake itself was actually on the light side - at least the cake part of it.  Additionally, the frosting was not globbed on in an inch-thick layer like a lot of places do lately, so it wasn't cloyingly sweet either.  However, it was still six layers of cake and frosting.  BK and Adriana made it through half a layer, and I made it through two layers.  The rest is currently sitting in the fridge here in it's custom box from the Claim Jumper.

And here's another view of the Chocolate Motherlode Cake:

-All in all, it's actually not a bad dessert deal.  A slice is only $9.95.  That would easily go for $20 in NYC... Or downtown L.A. ;)

And did you rest a bit?

A bench in Union Square station that city officials say are possibly infested with bed bugs.

SUBWAYS' BLOOD-BUG INVASION

By PATRICK GALLAHUE, JOHN MAZOR and SYLVIA HARVEY
May 8, 2008 --

Don't let the bedbugs swipe!

The blood-sucking insects aren't just living with New Yorkers at home - they're on the subways, too, according to one of the city's leading bedbug authorities.

At a recent Department of Housing, Preservation and Development forum on the subject, a city bedbug educator admitted to seeing the pests on benches in subway stations - in one case, catching a ride on an unsuspecting straphanger's caboose at Brooklyn's Hoyt-Schermerhorn station, according to people at the meeting.

The official, identified as Edward Brownbear, also reported seeing the bugs on wooden benches at the Union Square and Fordham Road stations in Manhattan and The Bronx, respectively

Good morning, all!

DR Jose, I hope you had no trouble wrapping your lips about that piece of cake.

DR Michael Shayne, the "Theme from MOULIN ROUGE (Where is Your Heart)" was an adaptation of the song "sung" by ZsaZsa Gabor in the film.

DR BK, great reviews! I did notice something funny in the review from EDGE Los Angeles:
Shannon Cudd, as the Bunson’s slutty teenage daughter, Donna, is funny enough as she goes from late night lip sucking sessions with his [her???] disinterested would-be beatnik boyfriend Rod (Dimas Diaz) to unexpected savior to her family.

Today, more brain surgery.

TOD: Perhaps, since DearReaderLaura DR is busy today, she won't mind if I reprint her soup recipe from 2003:

Unseemly Soup with HAM CHUNKS AND CHEESE SLICES:

1 T olive oil
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
1 T flour
salt, pepper
fresh chopped basil from the garden
1 1/4 cup milk
2 c. Velveeta Cheese (cut in slices, of course)
Ham Chunks
3 boiled potatoes, in chunks

Saute garlic, onion and oil. Stir in flour until flour is absorbed. Stir in milk and cook and stir until thickenend and bubbly. Add cheese and stir until melted. Season with salt, pepper and basil. Add ham chunks and potatoe (oh, a Dan Quayle reference) chunks. Add more cheese if you want it thicker or more milk if you want it thinner.

With all of these review copies, it's lucky for me that I haven't been buying much lately so I don't have piles and piles of newly unwatched stuff sitting there. (Oh, there is PLENTY of unwatched stuff, but I have noticed the stack isn't GROWING, and that's a relief.)

With the TV season over in a couple of weeks, I'll enjoy having a reduced number of TV episodes to watch per week while catching up on DVDs, both review stuff and those bought for my own pleasure.

Amazon is having a 50% off sale on TV box sets, and I noticed that GHOST WHISPERER's two seasons were part of the sale. I had every intention of buying the first season set since I love the show and never saw the first season, but even at 57% off, the set was STILL over $30!

What on earth possesses its releasing company to list price this show at over $70? Even GREY'S ANATOMY doesn't list price for that amount!

There's an interesting comment by someone on All That Chat about the importance or unimportance of spelling errors.  It's interesting that it's for people to whom spelling comes easily that spelling by others becomes so important. I'd take this a step further by saying it applies to other aspects of life as well:  For people to whom math comes easily, they seem to stress the importance of being able to do math well.  For composers to whom notating a piano accompaniment comes easily, well, they seem to pooh-pooh the skills of a composer who can come up with a good melody without being able to also notate an accompaniment.  Those are the examples I can think of now, I suspect there are others.

Here's the comment from All that Chat:

"Well, I don't think it's a matter of carelessness either, not really. There are people for whom spelling is important. Usually. spelling comes pretty easily for those people. There are other people for whom it just doesn't come easily. And for some of them, it's less important. If the idea is clear, that's enough..."

My favorite soup to make is French Onion Soup, a la Julia (of course).

But this is May, this is spring!  Something springlike may be a better soup for today!

Yesterday, I came across this recipe for Zuppa di Zucca (Pureed Zucchini Soup with Fresh Thyme).

Heat a saucepan.  Add 3/4 cup clarified butter and allow it to get hot.  Add 1 and 1/2 pounds zucchini (medium diced), 1/4 t red pepper flakes, and 2 T fresh thyme, chopped.  Saute the zucchini until it starts to brown.  Turn off the heat, stir in 1 T chopped garlic, and let stand for about 10 minutes.

Warm 3 cups chicken stock.  Put some of the zucchini mixture in a blender with enough of the stock to make the blender spin easily.  Pulse initially to allow some of the liquid to incorporate, then puree until the mixture has a smooth consistency.  Pour the contents of the blender into a new saucepan, and repeat until the entire mixture is smmothly blended and fully incorporated.

Reheat the soup over a low flame, stirring occasionally.  Season carefully with salt, tasting before and after seasoning.  Ladle the spoon into serving bowls, garnishing with grated Parmegiano-Reggiano, Romano, or Asiago cheese and a spring of the fresh thyme.

Serves six.

From Creating Chefs, by Carol W. Maybach, recipe by Chef Fritz Pasquet.

(Dang, now I'm getting hungry!)

"I feel the same way about Mass as I do about Gilbert and Sullivan:  it's a lot more fun to do than to watch." (p. 272)

This is an older request but can people add to this.

Songs from movies which lyrics were written after the themes became popular

Laura
Around the World in Eighty Days
Somewhere In Time
The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance
Out of Africa (The Music of Goodbye)
Love Story (Where Do I Begin?)
Doctor Zhivago (Somewhere My Love [Laura's Theme])
Gone With The Wind (My Own True Love)
The Godfather (Speak Softly Love [The Love Theme From The Godfather])
Romeo & Juliet (A Time For Us [The Love Theme From Romeo & Juliet])

With ROMEO & JULIET that is not entirely true.  The song was written for the film with lyrics, under the title WHAT IS A YOUTH?
New words were written and the song recorded by everyone and their brother under the new title, A TIME FOR US.

What did I predict?  Huh?  What did I predict?

Um, I believe you actually predicted that I would consume the whole piece of cake - while being timed.  However, I did not finish the slice of cake.  In fact, we did not finish the slice of cake.  -Nor the accompanying dish of ice cream.  In any case...

It's a good slice of cake, and perfect for sharing.  However, next time - if there is a next time - I'd like to try their Sticky Toffee Pudding.

*And we took your "prediction" as more of a "challenge".  At least it was a good challenge. ;D

My soup recipes are Chicken Rice and Tomato; For the CR open the can and add water, for the Tomato add 2% milk.Saltines for one and Ritz for the other.Actually I make a good stew, Beef, with carrots, celery, potatoes and onions- and chicken stew, the same receipt only substitute chicken for the beef.....The spelling comment was fascinating. One of my favorite authors, Flannery O'Connor, was a very poor speller(an 'innocent' speller was how she described it.) Her collection a letters, A HABIT OF BEING, is all the more enjoyable as the editors left in the misspellings. One mispelled word(tare for tear) actually made it into her First novel; The proofreader simply thought she was being profound....Yesterday I purchased a ticket for the last performance of CURTAINS in NYC(I'm using my rebate to boost our economy)I've never been to a closing per before, tho I did get to the next to last show Of Dolly with Ginger Rogers and Carleton Carpenter. I saw CURTAINS last spring,so  I know I'll enjoy it again; Now all I need is good luck at the SP cancellation line; I'm already petitioning St Jude(sorry for the long post)

I'm really not sure what I'm going to do today.  I may hop on the bus up to Griffith Park and brave the crowds, or I may hop on the Red Line to Hollywood and Vine and brave the crowds there.  However, there's also a Taiwanese Culture and Food Festival going on downtown at the Pueblo Monument across the street from Union Station...  Lots of options.

DR brian - It still seems that LCT is releasing the unclaimed house seats for the week on Sunday night after 6:00 and/or Monday in the late afternoon.  I mentioned a few weeks ago that a friend of mine was able to get a Front Row, Center Mezz seat that way.  It was for a Tuesday night performance, but he only purchased it two days before on Sunday.  -And I've checked a few times since then, and the "pattern" seems to be continuing.  *There was a fifth row center orchestra seat available for last Thursday night's performance when I checked last Monday.  Just sayin'.

Yesterday's grand re-opening went well enough.  There were plenty of suits from the regional office taking a break for officizing but not in intimidating everyone else.  There were plenty of compliments about how nice the store looks now - much brighter and somehow larger.  The one negative was a DJ equipped with too many disco-arranged hits from the past and a volume knob that had no settings lower than eleven.  There were a number of complaints from our older customers about him.

I should get myself to the store, for next week's schedule and the stuff I'll need for tonight's dinner.  Dang, that soup recipe sounds good.

So on Thursday, I recorded the concert version of Camelot on my new hi-def DVR, but there was a two-minute section that went black and was silent. :P So, I set the hi-def DVR to re-record the re-broadcast this morning but when I woke up, it had a "Hard Drive Full" message on the screen!!  It didn't record ANY of the re-broadcast!  I checked my non-hi-def DVR that I have in my bedroom (I set it to record the exact same program...but not in hi-def) but it didn't record the first 40 minutes or so!!!  What's that all about??  The only consolation is that the non-hi-def DVR started recording the re-broadcast at a place before the original hi-def broadcast screwed up, so I should be able to patch together a complete (if not completely hi-def) version. :-\

It's interesting that it's for people to whom spelling comes easily that spelling by others becomes so important.

No one can be more critical than I about spelling errors, and I was basically a terrible speller; it has only been through years of hard work that I have become fairly proficient - my salvation is that I can usually spot a potentially misspelled word and can check on it. Spending years doing crossword puzzles helps.

When I was involved in hiring, a resume with a spelling or punctuation error was almost automatically put in the reject file. However, I never faulted workers for errors in drafts - getting it right for publication was all that mattered.
Spelling is important only to people who wish to be considered educated.

I think the point of that ATC poster was that only people who are good at spelling would find it OK to consider spelling THAT important.  Der B, your use of the words "considered educated" is an indication of a societal standard, and i wonder whether it needs to be questioned, as do many societal standards.

I presume you mean the questioning as to whether or not it should be a standard. My experience is that people who fail to meet the societal standards do so either through ignorance, carelessness, or lack of concern. In any event, there are consequences. Who knows how many potential Nobel Laureates I condemned to the reject pile because of sloppy proofing. The "failing" may have been mine, but it was the applicant that suffered.

Now I must admit, my rather cavalier attitude could be dampened if there were insufficient "good-spelling" candidates.

THE ATLANTIC-ANDREW SULLIVAN (http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/05/are-you-a-david.html)

Quote
Are You A David Archuleta Or A Jason Castro?
...
David Cook is a fantastic poseur, very talented but so obviously straining for Seriousness it's painful to watch at times. There are few people as sad as rock performers who think they are philosophers - especially those who don't have a drug habit. He's obviously the smartest performer, and probably the most all-round  talented one, but who wants to encourage the pretension?

And then Jason Castro: the kid who didn't really want to be there. How wonderful was that? Stoners the world over tuned in to see what this young, dreadlocked, mellow charmer would do next. I was blown away by his "Over The Rainbow" but his singing in general is pretty weak and his main attraction was his sweet-eyed nonchalance, his obvious ambivalence to the commercial cheesiness of the show, his indifference to the cult of celebrity and vanity and ambition that Idol represents. He actually seemed comfortable being himself. He didn't need this shebang. And to see that personal security on network television - a walking (well, meandering) rebuke to the need for external validation and celebrity culture - evoked pure wonder. I was smitten.

And then poor David Archuleta. He is obviously the best singer in the competition, is almost certainly going to win it, but just as obviously is totally lost. If Castro was indifferent to the process, Archuleta seems as if his entire life has been directed toward it. Clips show him crashing the show years ago; he won his first singing competition at 10 years' old, and is a veteran Star Search competitor. The kid is still only 17 years' old. He has, alas, a classic over-bearing show-biz dad, who has now been banned from backstage. David looks to me like a Michael Jackson in the making: a brilliant talent sacrificed to the cult of celebrity and stardom at so young an age that his own emotional and spiritual development has been frozen. When he is asked to speak, he has nothing to say, except a Bambi-style mode of total humility, amazement and innocence. I feel for him and it's had not to hope someone could still rescue him from the machine that is about to consume him.

Between Jason Castro and David Archuleta, you see two ways of living in the world: one sacrificed to external recognition and one indifferent to it. We all have a bit of each in us in this tabloid, celebrified world. But Jason, to my mind, will probably live a much happier life. And he'll know, at some level, why. There's a lesson in there somewhere - even on a reality show.

I began my afternoon watching Thursday night's CSI.

I didn't like it. Obviously the writers were drawing on their CYBIL experience since the two main sitcom characters resemble Shepard and Baranski so much. But the plot wasn't interesting, everyone from series regulars to guest stars were so smug, and the comedy just didn't ring true to the show.

TWO AND A HALF MEN definitely came out the winner in this switch-up.

I went to an estate sale today and bought a little side table that I didn't need...but it was half price, making it only 2.50, and it was very 1950s and it fit in the trunk of my car, so I said to myself..."why not?"
Title: Re:THE BODICE RIPPER
Post by: MBarnum on May 10, 2008, 04:31:35 PM
I then went to a second estate sale at a very large two story home...Jim and I waited in line...there were about 15 people total in line when they opened not one second before 10 am...then they would only let 5 people in at a time so that it would not get too crowded...in a large 2 story house????

After making the other ten of us wait about ten minutes, and seeing that the line was not going to get any longer they decided we all could go in.

It was the second day of the sale...nothing was discounted.

After going through the entire two stories Jim and I were about to leave when I noticed a bathroom door that had a sign that said "No admittance." I was very curious about the house as it was for sale and was a fixer upper, so I was most curious to see if this  bathroom needed as much work as the upstairs bathroom did...so I opened the door just to peek in....then the cashier guy yelled at me VERY loudly saying "When it says no admittance, it means no admmittance." I humbly apologized saying that I just was curious how the bathroom looked (which was full of just empty cardboard boxes, by the way) and he then yelled at me again, angrily, to ask first next time.

Of course if I had asked I am certain he would have said no.

I had not heard it per se (that it was cancelled). But i saw a remark somewhere that led me to believe it was potentially cancelled.

It's not one of my favorites. But i did like it.

Do you happen to know if there will still be more episodes this season?

I wouldn't be that upset about the show being cancelled. But only if there is some kind of ending this season.

DR. Elmoore:

I listened to the audio tape of The Persuasion. I believe I am correct but the final dance is a sped up version of the intro to How To Handle A Woman? Am I?

Also I think I still may have it in storage in Montreal, but I have a Living Strings (I think) recording of Broadway material (maybe Camelot in particular) and it has a recording of The Quests. I will be in Montreal at the end of the month and I will look for it if you are interested in having a recording of it. (Or anyone else for that matter)

Well, it's officially summer in Middletown, OH - Richard and I just had dinner from

The Jug (http://www.thejug.com)

It's just up the street from us, open only in the summer, and only on the weekends until June 1.

I don't use spell check, unless there is a word that i am unsure of.  I will say that I've always found spelling quite easy.  And it does bug me when people spell words incorrectly.  But not enough to get too upset about!

I'm back from a long day of doing things like trading books and eating.  I have in my garage about thirty boxes of books that were formerly in my bedroom closet having no room on my bookshelves.  Most of them are signed, most are in primo condition and most are mysteries, but I also had a few duplicates of good titles.  So, I went through the first three boxes I could find and pulled out about four books out of the seventy-five or so I looked at - I kept those and took the others to Bookfellows to trade.  He had enough copies of most of them but he did pull out about fifteen books or so and I got three hundred bucks in credit and was able to get a few really nice books that were in primo condition and of much more interest to me.

Now, here's the question - before I go take these to another bookstore, would any of you be interested in a list of the remaining titles - as I said, they're all really terrific, shape-wise, many are signed, many are excellent books, both mysteries and otherwise, and none will be priced higher than ten bucks, most at five.  No book clubs, all minty fresh first editions.  Let me know if there's interest and I'll list 'em.

I'm not sure what we will do for Mother's Day tomorrow. My mom wants to take my niece to the park for a picnic lunch. I think it is supposed to be quite warm and sunny (70Fish).

Tomorrow is also my aunt's birthday. And she is having a party at a nice restaurant.

And then hopefully i will get to watch SURVIVOR at some point. I cannot wait for that!

Keith is feeding Sherlock giving me a chance to post.

I found this on Broadwayworld.com

Adrian Bailey,  an ensemble member in the cast of The Little Mermaid on Broadway, was injured after a fall through a trap door prior to the start of the Saturday matinee. The actor, who fell approximately 20 feet on to the stage, was conscious and taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.  Bailey broke both wrists during the fall. The show began about an hour later without further incident and the evening show will run as scheduled.

BroadwayWorld.com sends positive thoughts and prayers towards Adrian for a quick and speedy recovery!

I shall now be on my way to see The Brain From Planet X.  I wonder how the matinee went - this was the first performance they were on their own to choose the Brain Tap mark - I'm curious to see how it went.

Well, I am sorry to read that some people are offended by those of us who make occasional spelling errors.  Considering the fact that I am a very anal retentive person, I can assure you, that when those errors occur, they are unintentional.  However, having said that, I am certainly not going to lose any sleep over it; so if it bothers someone, I guess that is their problem, not mine.

We had an early Mother's Day celebration, since she is going up to see my brother on Sunday. (His birthday was this week.) So we cooked breakfast for her and her partner---I consider him my step-father----and then took them on the Connoisseur's Garden Tour. We did 3 gardens and then we took them out for lunch at a French bakery. Yummy!

Then we did 3 more gardens but they were too tired to do the last tow, so I may try and go tomorrow, and take my gardening show producer. But strong storms are expected, so it may be a wash.

The last time it was mentioned, ABC's plans were to show the remaining unaired episodes this summer on Wednesday nights once BOSTON LEGAL completes its season. Those plans may have changed, however, since I read that some weeks ago. They've paid for the shows; they might as well show them. However, they also paid for other shows like EYES and never showed all of those episodes either.

I'm a fair speller but a LOUSY typist, so lots of times I know how to spell but what pops up on-screen isn't what I was going for. My mood determines whether I go back and modify or just leave it.

The first garden we went to was one of my favorites, it was so unusual and personal. I imagined it belonged to someone who was an artist.

The owner has her own garden design business, specializing in edible gardens that require little water. She gave me her brochure for her business. I noticed her name: Vanessa Vadim. I said, "Oh, like the director". She said "Yes, he was my father"!

So we were talking to Jane Fonda's daughter. Who knew?

She was very nice, and knowledgeable about plants!

I spent the entire evening with NATIONAL TREASURE 2: BOOK OF SECRETS. (The on-screen title leaves out the "2.")

Bigger but not necessarily better than the first. Lots of stunts, more elaborate chases, bigger sets, etc. A sequel to a hit franchise always tries to outdo the first. I don't think this one succeeded in hooking my interest as much as the first one did in terms of wrapping the story around historical artifacts. This is bigger and louder but for me was not as good a time to watch.

The Blu-ray is stunning to look at, and it has a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack that's state of the art, too.

I finished the movie around 9. I took the next two hours with the bonus features. To their credit, every bonus feature on the disc is in high definition, either 1080i or 1080p. (That was definitely NOT the case with the first NATIONAL TREASURE Blu-ray. Only three of the bonuses were in HD.)

The Blu-ray has two exclusives not on the sDVD version. There's a BD-Java interactive overlay for the film that brings up pop-up facts throughout the film as history flies by. There's also an interactive true-false quiz that you take as certain historical facts are spouted in the movie. Some, of course, are false and only stated to make the movie for compelling. Nice little test of American historical knowledge.

I only scratched the surface of this feature - about 20 minutes' worth of it.

The other exclusive is two additional deleted scenes not on the sDVD.

I didn't listen to the commentary track yet. I'll do that tomorrow.

I did look at all of the other documentary features about the various sets and action scenes in the film. There were 10 in all.

I know there are several Easter Eggs on the disc, but I haven't found them as yet.

Beijing-based artist Zhan Wang sculpted the San Francisco cityscape out of pots, pans, graters, and other kitchenware. The piece is part of a new exhibition of Wang's work at San Francisco's Asian Art Museum running until May 25.

I have had cable for over 20 years, DR DAKOTACELT, but my feeling is that you might need some type of antenna to boost the signal.  Do you get good radio reception?  Well....that's not the same thing, so I guess that doesn't matter.....maybe a knowledgeable salesperson can assist you - although I think you asked the right person, when he gets back.....

Pretty full house tonight and a nicely vocal audience - lots of laughs, but a couple of actors have started changing up what they're doing and not for the better, so when I'm at our put-in rehearsal, I'll be having a little chat with the company and then the couple of actors privately - but mostly a very good show.

Although, there were like five or six people (I guess there always are) whose attitude seems to be "I won't laugh no matter what you do, and I don't care what you do I'm just going to sit here and not show anyone any emotion and I'm basically going to not enjoy myself no matter what."

well, imagine my surprise, when the stage manager said, "Places, please..." and I sat in my little chair in my little loft... looked out over the packed house... and spied: JOSE!!! I had no idea he was in town, and yet, there he was at my show!!!

After, I wiped my face and scurried out to see our boy - what a joyous reunion! He reminded me he hadn't been out to LA since What If? - which was four - count 'em - four years ago! So much water under the bridge since then.

Anyway, I just got home, and gotta get some shut eye - Jose took pix, which I dare say he'll post tomorrow. Good night, DR's...
