Good morning, all! I was up too late with the plane crash coverage on CNN and I slept in. I had been thinking a couple of days ago about my friend Myra who died on one of the planes on 9/11 and this crash of yesterday has me in a rather reflective mood this morning. I have laundry to do, a birthday call to make to Miss Charlotte in Ann Arbor, and hope that by noon I'll be back to my usual self-centered being.
DR George, I know THE WIZARD OF OZ from reading the book at a 10 year-old rather than the film, which I love, but all of the pre-1939 versions veer drastically from the source. According to the preface to the published 1939 screenplay, additional plots not based on the book were considered for addition to the story. Thank God that didn't happen, although the poppy field and snow come from the 1902 musical version. My friend Marc Swartz has written a great book about these early afaptations and it's wonderful. If you love OZ and don't know this book, you should gtab it since it's selling cheap in hardcover on amazon.com/
