Well, you've read the notes, you are notes complete, therefore let us post until the cows come home for the Oscar bash, and then let us post some more.

OK! OK! OK!

I'm a late-night denizen, and I'm posting.

Well, since I only saw two Oscar nominated films last year, I'll have to pull for those: Finding Nemo and In America.

-But I do either Samantha Morton and/or Djimon Hounsou (sp?) win Best Supporting Actor/tress.

I'll have to pull up a ballot to check off my other choices... but that will have to wait until morning...

Well, nice try with the "60 Minutes" theme, Jose, but it didn't manage to get "I've Got a Brand New Pair of Roller Skates" out of my head. :)

In the UK comedy group "the Wurzels" had a hit with "I've Got A Brand New Combine-Harvester". I guess Melanie Safka was still happy enough to get the royalties. You needed to know that!

DR Jed -

"I've got you... under my skin.
I've got you... deep in the heart of me.
So deep in my heart..."

Or how about -

"At first I was afraid,
I was petrified.
Kept thinking I could never live without you
By my side..."

Or how about -

"When you feel sad...
(tap-tap-tap, tap-tap tap-tap tap)
Or under a curse
(tap-tap-tap, tap-tap tap-tap tap)..."

Or even -

"You put your right hand in
You put your right hand out
You put your right hand in
Then you shake it all about.."

-Sorry, Jed... Would you like some cookies? ;)

In his notes, BK wrote:

I have been trying to picture our BK in fancy dress, but cannot decide on the right kind of fabric.  Lame?  Tuille?  Chiffon?  Embroidered silk?

Certainly not gingham!

 ;D

Haha!  You certainly do know your earworms, Jose!  But the bit of Godspell seems to have done the job. :)  I can hear Stephen Nathan singing that line oh so clearly.

That reminds me of the first time I watched The First Nudie Musical.  He started singing "Let 'Em Eat Cake," and it suddenly hit me that it was Jesus singing! :D  I was rather amused.

BK,

I believe the Humbert Humbert in LOLITA, MY LOVE is John Neville; what I cannot remember is who played Quilty, and then I confuse this musical with Edward Albee's play and it goes to total hell.  SUR LES QUAIS was always a number I hoped we'd get to on an UNSUNG MUSICALS edition.

I'm having friends over tonight to watch the Oscars so I'm immersed in drastic but need house cleaning.  I let everything slide while I'm working on a project but a party is always a good excuse to straighten things up.  Since I usually miss over half the nominated films, I never have any real thoughts on who should win, but I hope Howard Shore wins for LOTR: Return of the King; I think his inspiration and output for the threee films is quite wonderful: I'm not so hot on the sung material in the films (s) but Howard was on a roll.

I wish all DRs a happy evening with lots of laughs and good company.

I don't feel strongly one way or another about any of the Oscar nominated films or performances, and don't plan to watch the show.

The Tonys are another matter entirely! Now THAT will be interesting!

Last night I posted a late night trivia question and DR S. Woody White  got it almost right. But I am amazed he got as far as he did.  I am reproducing his very late night/early morning post below

Quote from: Michael Shayne on Today at 01:55:35am
Late night trivia question:

What do Robert Redford, George C Scott, Martin Lawrence, Christopher Lee, Paul la Matt all have in common?

Clue: A Movie connection.

It's nothing anatomical

Yeah, yeah, DR Michael, change the question with a clue after I IM'd you a wisecrack.

I've got four of the five, but I'm missing Christopher Lee.

Redford starred in The Hot Rock
Scott starred in Bank Shot
Lawrence starred in What's the Worst That Could Happen?
La Matt starred in Jimmy the Kid

All were based on novels written by Donald Westlake.  (Redford and Scott playing the same character!)

Well he is correct. They all played the same character, Redford and LeMatt played John Archibald Dortmunder but in the film adaptations  for Scott, Lawrence and Lee the characters name were changed but it was still the same guy. I really didn't think anyone would get it that quickly. An Oscar to you!!!

Like I said yesterday I will tape them like I have down the past many years and them rewind them and then fastforward them. I usually can get through the whole show in 45 minutes if I don't stop to watch anything in real time, If I do stop to watch something maybe 1hr to 1 1/12 hrs. It sure beats sitting in front of the tV for 4 hrs plus!!

Mawnin' y'all. I've been rather incommunicado for the past several days, and finally have an opportunity to check in. (My hostess is in the shower... so I'm catching a quick internet fix).

Another lovely sunny day here in NYC. I've had a wonderful visit with some old friends, some whom I've known for decades. Today I wind up this trip, and head back to Bristol PA this evening to pick up my Stuff, then load into the ol' Nissan Pathfinder with my companion of many years (long story, there...) and drive back to LA.

Two nights ago I saw the Hugh Jackman piece - The Boy from Oz. Uneven, but a heck of a good time. he's terrific, the Judy and Liza characters are scary-good, the music is mostly swell, there is a little boy of about 11 or so who knocks yer socks off, the singing is top notch, lots of sequins and ostrich feathers... so my evening was made!

Also went to Marie's Crisis Cafe for piano bar... do y'all know this place???? Hundreds of people standing around a piano, down in the basement of a Revolutionary War building, singing their lungs out - every word of every verse of every song of every show that's ever played New York. Lots of drunken camaraderie. Oh, my! Little Pen in Heaven.

So have a wonderful day, wherever y'are. I will. Sorry I won't be there for BK's party tonight, but my heart is there!

Could it be the late Leonard Frey?
I think Ben Bagley recorded it for his Alan Jay Lerner Revisted album and I believe Dorothy Loudon recorded it. Without pulling out the cd I believe there was another recorded as well.

Sunday, Sweet Sunday - oh a R/H reference!

Off to rehearsal again....Act One is finished....on to Act Two!  AND our conveyer belt arrives on Monday.  Tech director said shortest conveyer available is 10 feet long.....and after I thought about it...otherwise what's the point....just hand it to the next guy!!!

I enjoy watching the Oscars!  Seeing all the people....SOME of the jokes....it always DOES seem to be extended.  All of those dumb speeches and jokes and introductions and then the winners only get a certain amount of time.  I say cut all the other stuff and let THEM talk...unless of course....as Raquel Welch said before co-announcing the Best Actress Oscar (don't ask me why she was there):  "I hope she doesn't have a cause!"

THE MOVIE GAME was also hosted by Sonny Fox...maybe in the second season.  I remember that Earl Holliman and Burt Reynolds were great players....but people like Kathryn Grayson and Shelley Winters were hopeless.

Shelley stopped Larry dead in his tracks when she suddenly exclaimed:  "Oh you're married to Carol that beautiful dancer."  Larry then said after a moment....."WAS married.....was!"  Carol of course was dead.

And Vera Miles interrupted the game to tell us that she had been cast in HOUSE OF WAX on Friday and then on Monday when she went into work, she was out and Phyllis Kirk was in.

JR, I think there must have been two different Movie Games.  The Blyden one only lasted one season and was broadcast either the 1967-68 or 1968-69 season (possibly 1969-70, but no later than that).  It was a pretty low-tech affair.

Shelley does that alot. There is a classic moment from the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson where Ms Winters did a similar thing. She was the first guest so by this time she was on the couch. The next guest was Annie Potts. In the middle of the interview. Shelley says that she is a good actress and that she looks familar. Annie reminds her that they did a movie together called King of the Gypsies where they mother/daughter and reminds her of the graveyard scene where they stood next to each other.

Some people have short term memory problems I thin Shelly Winters has long term memory problems.

Ok let's settle The Movie Game Hosting questions once and for all

Jack Narz was the host for the pilot
Sonny Fox was the host from Sept-Dec 1969
Larry Blyden was the host from Dec 1969-Feb 1972

Columnist Army Archerd was the assistant throughout the run

Johnny Gilbert was the announcer

Good morning, all!

just a quick little question, which should be easily answered:

Is there a connection between DR. Michael D. Shayne and Alfred Hitchcock's VERTIGO?

I wasn't born when the movie was made. So please tell me

Okay I looked it up. We don't talk about Konstantin Shayne because he had a sex change and became Tamara Shayne. Although they claimed to be brother and sister they weren't. They were the same person. And strangley enough he/she continued to work under both names!!!!

Good morning all. Still trying to catch up on yesterday's posts.

I love watching the Oscars. My favorite part though has to be what everyone is WEARING!

Did not see Trading Spaces yet from last night. But I did tape it. And I also taped a bit extra so I can see the designers/home owners comments from the show before (the extra footage).

I like Edward and Christie just okay. But I much prefer Vern/Laurie, and even Hildy.

And I also wonder where Vern is!?! I don't think he's been on a single episode this season. :(

Glad to topic of the day is Oscars part because I have a question based on the talk last night about the great Roddy McDowall.

I've often wondered why the Academy didn't vote him a special juvenile Oscar in 1941 for HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY. or for LASSIE COME HOME, for that matter. He was so good in both of them, and he seems a prime candidate for that special award that had gone to four children up to 1941: Shirley Temple, Deanna Durbin, Mickey Rooney, and Judy Garland. Has this ever been discussed in any reading matter any of you have done. I've never found ANY reference to it at all, but I just find his omission very strange.

Good morning, all. Geez, I shouldn't have gone to bed early-ish last night. Missed a lot of good conversation.

Okay, FS Pogue - Your eloquence has convinced me. I'll bend the rules for you and Sophia.

SWW - Coooookieeeeee!

Jose - No matter what any doctor says, reading in bed is a GOOD thing. IMO, there's only one other activity in that particular location that's better. But with a book there are no complications in the morning.

I too will probably tape the Oscars, and fast forward through most of it tomorrow.  It doesn't spoil it for me to know in advance who won, because most of the time I don't care or don't know who they're talking about.

There are so few people I WANT to see on the Oscars, and all they do is make fun of what used to make the Oscars a good and enjoyable evening.

I will  not rant; I will not rant.

I loved everyone sharing their family histories.  Lyn and I both have some interesting ones too--although not nearly  as interesting (or as tragic-- at least that I know of) as what I read on yesterday's posts. I grew up thinking all the the other families around us were happy and normal (and only ours was screwed up).  It's always fascinating to find out that everyone's family is dysfunctional and  far from the perfect picture created.  The whole world is Peyton Place when you get right down to it-- no matter what decade we're talking about.

I was just informed by DRMusicGuy that he's planning on having a a nice dinner with mw and watching the Oscars live.  Well, I can't sit through the entire ceremony (luckily the television is more or less behind me) because I have some work to do, so I'll probably sit here at the computer (NOT ON THIS SITE BECAUSE I HAVE WORK TO DO THAT NEVER GETS DONE BECAUSE I'M ON THIS SITE).  I must finish some tax things SOON (for something with a different fiscal year AND my appointment is with the tax accountant is Tuesday-- and which has alredy been postponed TWICE).   I'd much rather read about what Jose had for dinner or Jay's walking tour and alll of you than do what I should be doing RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!

Sigh-- I need to go get ready for work.  I love you all and will catch up with you later.  *****sigh********

Is that true about Roddy MacDowall's book not being published until 50 yearas after his death?!!?!?!  CRAP!  He knows ALL the stories and all the people, but I do not plan on being around that long-- even if were 20 now--which I'm not.  I'll just have to hear the stories from him personally then.

I jsut gave a little listen to the recording of SHERRY!  Not the whole thing, mind you.  I have to say that Christine Baranski and Jonathon Freeman are sheer perfection; it's a shame about Carol Burnett and Nathan Lane.  Burnett does a slightly different lyric as well; but in my book, the title song produced by MR. K. simply cannot be topped.

Oh, I have my reasons for watching the Oscars tonight:

BLAKE EDWARDS
ANNIE LENNOX
CATHERINE O'HARA AND EUGENE LEVY performing

PETER JACKSON and his films.

Good. I got to correct my Aussie time error before anyone noticed. The mind is a strange and wonderful thing. I was just out walking, thinking about everything but the time in Australia -- and suddenly everything in my head came to a screeching halt and a little voice screamed, "You idiot! You added 14 hours instead of 19!"
Which of course was true - so as soon as I returned from my walk, I came to the site, hit "Modify" (I LOVE that feature -- wish we had it in life) and rectified my stupid error.
My question is -- how do those things happen. Is there some part of the mind that just works away on problems long after the conscious mind has merrily moved on? Fascinating.

The happeningest Oscar bash in town - right here!  Even if you don't care and are not watching the Oscars, this will be the place to be, just like it was for the Tony Awards last year.

Leonard Frey was indeed Quilty and John Neville is right as Humbert.

John Neville followed my late and much missed cousin, John Hirsch, as Artistic Director of the Stratford Festival.
Does he actually sing as Humbert or is it Rex Harrison- type singing?

Alas, I will not be posting til the cows come home this evening (And I so enjoy posting til the cows come home!) for I will be holding an intimate soiree this evening in celebration of the Academy Awards.  Intimate, because more than half the people I invited can't go out on school nights. ::) I really need some older friends!  Regardless, it will be a thrilling bash.  Every year, I roll out the red carpet, line it with tea candles, throw on my sister's prom dress, cook things that nobody will eat because teenagers are finicky, and hold a brilliant shindig that only I appreciate.  I'm terribly excited.

Jenny - Sounds like a great evening! Are you going to have ballots for everyone to mark? Whenever I've had one of those soirees, I've always asked for a dollar per person in a hat. The one who gets the highest number right gets to go home with the loot. It keeps people invested in the proceedings, that's for sure. I've seen university professors beat their heads in agony over missing Best Sound.

Definitely the Wiener! A suggestion, perhaps a bit bizarre, but, hey, it's from me: If you could get a base for the wiener -- like a little clay planter pot sprayed gold - that would make it perfect.

I spent a (partial) weekend in the country, and returned to catch up on yesterday's posts. I had a great weekend. There's nothing better than that first perfect hint-of-spring day following a bleak couple of months. But yesterday's rich assortment here made me feel like I had missed out on a wonderful day with friends. (And TCB, I laughed out loud at the "no goaning at HHW" line.")

Still, even though I was E&T, there was a HHW connection since I finally made DR Panni's Ibi Néni Cake. The combination of molten chocolate with a meringuey surface and a jammy burst before hitting the nutty and buttery crust made for an irresistible treat.

DR Jenny. I'd go for the wiener - maybe even slid into an Oscar. I tried to copy the URL, but couldn't. However, if you go to www.ebay.com and search "Academy Award Oscar," you'll find a good model of an actual Oscar that can can be blown up to what I think is wiener size. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be a shindig to remember.

No, the wiener should not be cooked, and I say this from some experience.

Now, Jenny, just because you're having a soiree, doesn't mean you can't post - and have your guests post, too.  That is the fun of the happeningest party on all the Internet.  That is what happened with our Tony bash last year, and I would hate to tell you how many posts we had that evening - it is still our record and I believe it was over six hundred.

Fun from AOL Entertainment:

Academy Rewards

10 Oscar moments to watch for -- From Gollum impersonations to Tom and Nicole, here's what we're looking forward to seeing on Sunday night's show BY BRIAN HIATT, GARY SUSMAN

10. PAYING RESPECTS This year's reminder-of-one's-own-mortality segments should be less depressing than usual, with lighthearted tributes planned for the late, great, Oscar host extraordinaire Bob Hope, and 81-year-old honorary Oscar winner Blake Edwards (director of ''Breakfast at Tiffany's,'' ''10,'' and the ''Pink Panther'' films). Meanwhile, the ''In Memoriam'' montage of stars who died this year lets you play the ''I didn't realize he/she wasn't dead already'' game.

9. LENI RIEFENSTAHL Forget politically outspoken contenders like Sean Penn and Tim Robbins. The most controversial name of the night will be Leni Riefenstahl, the pioneering documentarian and propagandist for Hitler, who'll be recognized during the aforementioned death montage. Listen for the deafening lack of applause when her clip appears.

8. ALISON KRAUSS The talented but relatively obscure bluegrass artist will have as much screen time as any A-list movie star at this year's Oscars, singing duets of two nominated songs from the epic ''Cold Mountain.'' Krauss -- who was also on the blockbuster ''O Brother, Where Art Thou?'' soundtrack -- will perform the ethereal ''You Will Be My Ain True Love'' with Sting and the piano ballad ''Scarlet Tide'' with Elvis Costello. And millions will wonder: O sister, who art thou?

7. A PRECIOUS MOMENT Will Peter Jackson -- or any of the night's other winners -- be tempted to do his best Gollum impersonation when presented with a gold statuette? Our bet: ''My precious'' is this year's ''I'm the king of the world.'' Yeeess, it iiiis.

6. ANNIE LENNOX Wouldn't it be cool if former Eurythmics gender-bender Lennox broke out the old orange crewcut and men's suit for the Oscars? Sweet dreams are made of that. In any case, expect a passionate rendition of the Enya-esque ballad ''Into the West'' from ''The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.''

5. JACK BLACK AND WILL FERRELL This pair may still be years away from Oscar-bait performances. Nevertheless, their debut appearances (as presenters) at the Academy Awards bode well for some spontaneity -- five-second delay be damned.

4. THE GOVERNATOR Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is scheduled to attend the Oscars, making a temporary return to the world of entertainment. Will Billy Crystal poke fun at the most powerful man in the room? Will anyone use their time at the podium to denounce Schwarzenegger's opposition to gay marriage? We can't wait for the suspense to be terminated.

3. EUGENE LEVY AND CATHERINE O'HARA The Christopher Guest regulars will reprise their roles from the mockumentary ''A Mighty Wind'' as the estranged folk duo Mitch & Mickey, performing their fictional '60s hit ''A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow.'' In the film, the former lovers are reluctant to reprise their trademark smooch at a key point in the song, but let's root for some lip-locking on Oscar night.

2. BILLY CRYSTAL ''Hairspray'' writer Marc Shaiman is back on board to craft original song-and-dance numbers for everybody's favorite Oscar host. We'd ask for a musical version of ''The Passion of the Christ,'' but it's been done already, hasn't it? So we'll settle for ''Seabiscuit Sings!''

1. TOM CRUISE AND NICOLE KIDMAN If nothing else, it'll be fun to see how the famous exes avoid each other for the entire evening.

Now, here's my question: Should the honorary Oscar be an Oscar The Grouch doll, an Oscar Wilde book, or an Oscar Meyer Wiener?

The Grouch, eating a weiner, reading Wilde's "The Importance of Being Ernie".

Our next Unseemly Interview will be up next week - with Larry Blank, who's conducted on Broadway (They're Playing our Song, Sugar Babies, Evita) and also orchestrated and arranged for just about everyone, including lots of stuff for Marc Shaiman.

REALLY?!?!?!?!?  How cool!

Please tell me there's at least one or two or three of his "classic" stories.  He's an amazing guy.  And truly one of the few remaining links to some of the Biggies of music theater from the 50s-70s.

Extract from a letter to a Congressman and the Speaker of the House:

...the President's presidential prayer team is
urging us to "pray for the President as he seeks wisdom on how to legally codify the definition of marriage. Pray that it will be according to
Biblical principles."

With that in mind, I thought I would remind the body of the biblical principles they are talking about.

Marriage shall consist of a union between one man and one or more women. That is from Genesis 29:17-28.

Secondly, marriage shall not impede a man's right to take concubines in addition to his wife or wives.
That is II Samuel 5:13 and II Chronicles 11:21.

A marriage shall be considered valid only if the wife is a virgin. If the wife is not a virgin, she shall be executed. That is Deuteronomy 22:13.

Marriage of a believer and a nonbeliever shall be forbidden. That is Genesis 24:3.

Finally, it says that since there is no law that can change things, divorce is not possible, and finally, if a married man dies, his brother has to marry his sister-in-law. Gen. 38:6-10; Deut 25:5-10

Offbeat French Cartoon Hopes for Oscar Gold
Sunday, February 29, 2004
By Daisy Nguyen

LOS ANGELES — If Sylvain Chomet (search) has his way, three cartoon women making music from a vacuum cleaner and refrigerator will perform at the Oscars.

Chomet directed "The Triplets of Belleville," (search) which is nominated for best animated film and best song. As Sunday's awards show approached, he was negotiating with producers to have his cartoon heroes perform the song rather than a well-known musician.

Such a scenario, the French animator says, would surely captivate Oscar viewers jaded by too many standard song-and-dance numbers, as well as capture his cartoon's delightfully weird spirit. "Triplets" is virtually devoid of dialogue, so music and song become another character alongside the trio of three elderly scat singers who help a resourceful grandmother find her kidnapped grandson.

"I always say animation is 50 percent image, 50 percent sound," Chomet said during a recent phone interview. "The triplets became the triplets with the help of the music. It's simple and alive, beautiful and silly."

First off...I am feeling much, much better today.  Almost back to normal.  (Or whatever passes for "normal", in my case.)  Tomorrow morning, I'm going into the doctor for some tests to see whether or not there are any "lasting effects".  Other than some ringing in the ears from time to time and general fatigue, both of which I was told I could expect, I'm expecting a clean bill of health.

And thanks for all the good vibes, people!

Second off...I love the Oscars.  I love everything about the Oscars.

The Significant Other and myself have seen all of the Best Picture nominations, as well as the Best Animated Feature nominations.  Oddly enough, I only liked two of the Best Picture nominees (The Return of the King and Master and Commander, for the record.  I was so-so on Lost in Translation and Seabiscuit, and simply loathed Mystic River, which is why I'm predicting it'll take the statue).  Besides, anything vaguely in the science fiction, fantasy or horror genres always get short shrift at the Oscars; I doubt this year will be any exception.  So, all you LOTR fans...don't get your hopes up.

As for the Animated Feature, I'm going to say Finding Nemo, even though The Triplets of Belleville was far better.

This year, the Oscars are being broadcast with a 5-second delay, in order to avoid any unexpected Janet Jackson breast-bearing, even though Miss Jackson will not be attending, and therefore any breast-bearing she may or may not do will not be televised.  Go figger.

The Oscars maybe broadcast around the world but they are not usually shown until peak viewing time. Years ago the Radio stations used to play fair and gave no spoilers - now there are no surprises unless you lock yourself away.

DR Panni. It's easier to subtract 5 and remember that it is the next day. I of course add five and know it's yesterday! I like living in my yesterdays and do it quite a lot.

Jrand53.

Burt Reynolds apparently is pretty good at movie trivia.  One day I'm working at home and I get a call from my pal Larry Drake.  He's calling from the set of Mr. Bean where he and Reynolds have been passing the time, playing movie trivia.  A disputed question about Lon McCallister has come up and Larry has called me to provide the definitive answer (this sort of thing happens frequently... getting called to settle bar bets and trivia questions on movies, simply because people know that if I don't know the answer, I probably have a book somewhere that has the answer in it).  Anyway, I settle the dispute...in Larry's favour, as I remember, providing the correct answer.

I'd like to do a masters Silver Screen Trivial Pursuit with me, Drake, Reynolds, and Kimmel sometime...the first version of Silver Screen...not any of this Johnny-Come-Lately stuff from the eighties and nineties which I can barely remember once I've left the theatre. I want questions where the answer is something like Roscoe Ates or Una O' Connor.

Poor Roddy never had any luck with the Oscars. He was the odds-on favorite to win Best Supporting Actor for CLEOPATRA, but a clerical error left the "Supporting" off his entry, and he was mistakenly entered in the Best Actor category which he had NO chance of gaining a nomination in. Seems like Fox or the producer or someone took out a full page ad apologizing to him, but the damage was done.

And best of all, as I'm finishing my cool down, I turn to the local public access channel that broadcast that ARTS network program stuff, and the clip from The Rake's Progess comes on with Dawn Upshaw singing "No word from Tom... I go, I go to him...".  I'm a very happy camper right now.   :D

My sick computer has been healed.  We've been having a lot of trouble with the computer all week and I had been able to read and post only from work, but after a lot of re-installing and one call to a technical service person who didn't treat me like an idiot and knew what he was doing we are back on line.  We also installed a cordless mouse so that the cord doesn't get stuck in the keyboard tray or the desk drawer any more.

I have not seen any Oscar® numinees except one anumated feature (BELLVILLE), one animated short (DESTINO) and 2 songs (BELLVILLE & A MIGHTY WIND) so I am not going to bother to watch them live.  We'll tape them and about 2 and a half hours into them stweitch the taping to a second machine while zapping through most of the first part and then zap through the second part.  The amazing thing is that not only have we seen any of the major nominations, we have no desire to see them.  Give me the classics any day.

Surely you saw FINDING NEMO, WEL, because I remember after you saw THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE, you discussed how much better it was than NEMO and how much you wished for it to receive recognition.

I will eventually see most of tonight's nominated films, but at this point, I've seen only a few. With the advent of DVDs, STARZ, and elaborate home theaters, going to the movies seems less necessary. Yes, I understand how movies are meant to be a shared experience, but I find that I do just fine solo.

I still find it very interesting to keep up with all the major releases through the internet and entertainment publications, but the anxiousness I once felt to see releases as soon as I could has completely left me.

Listen, that's what happens when you get older, you get lines and bags.  these people who have work are fools - it's not natural and looks bad.

What in tarnation were those horrid Cold Mountain songs.  In my estimation (IME, in Internet lingo) those were the absolute nadir of any nominated song ever.  Although I'm hearing this Return of the King song and it's just as bad.
Title: Re:THE OSCAR WILD PARTY

S. Woody here: A dulcimer is played with mallets.  It is the next of kin to the zyther, and a close cousin to the autoharp.

What Sting was playing was operated with a crank, and appeared related in contsruction to general string instruments of the era, such as the guitar and fiddle, but much more obscure.

I found the COLD MOUNTAIN songs to be virtually identical; though, I've always been a fan of Allison Krauss.

On the other hand, I adore "Into the West," a remarkably simple song with strong sentiment, tied to Tolkien and the films, made all the more memorable by the divine voice of Annie Lennox; who along with Tolkien and Fran Walsh, contributed lyrics.

All of the nominated songs are still better than last year's winner. Quite like the LOTR song but I certainly needed a few listens.

I am fully cognizant of what happens when folks age...having attained 55 years myself.  Extreme work looks bad, I agree.  But a small touch here or there can be a spirit lifter and an image enhancement.

Goodnight...

-Can't wait to see how many more pages there will be come morning...

Hermoine Gingold and Maurice Chevalier were not nominated for GIGI?  What is THAT about?

What a partay we had.  And the evening is young so don't poop out just yet, late-night denizens.  We must deconstruct Oscar and, of course, the sickening Barbara Walters.

"The Lord of the Rings" has been a major favorite novel of mine since my introduction to it in the 1970s.  For about seven years, I read the trilogy annually.

I have revisited it infrequently since then, being familiar with the story, but always fascinated by its themes and its scope coupled with its great spirit of humanity and continuation, despite the fact that certain things pass away, giving way to others.

The trilogy is my favorite moviegoing experience.  It's a fantastic experience, but never moreso than seeing the expanded versions of the first two films that not only increase the films' running times by about 40 minutes each but also dramatically increase the films' enjoyability.  I can't wait for the expanded TROTK.

I had a sense that this film might sweep the Oscars, but I wanted it to happen so much that I didn't trust my feeling.

The iffiest awards were editing, song and screenplay.

As for "Lost in Translation," I remember when "Good Will Hunting" was a nominee.  Affleck and Damon won the Oscar, but I kept reading things about how "others" had to have shaped the script into usable condition.

And now Sofia will apparently get some of that....

Bottom line:  New talent WILL out and take over the business.  Nobody in the business makes it on his or her talents alone.

Re: "Gigi" -- MGM always advertised the film as having won "9" Oscars because the Academy gave Maurice Chevalier a special Oscar that year for his contributions to motion pictures as a performer.  But that Oscar was not one of the film's nominations and does not actually "count" in the Oscar total.

MGM also advertised "10" Oscars for "Gone With the Wind" which won only 8 of its nominations.  Technicians received special Oscars, for which no nominations had been issued, which the studio touted as part of that film's total.  One was for the tracking shot devised for the Atlanta train station, so I think it's perfectly legit that it was attributed as an Oscar the film won.

Ditto "Star Wars" which won, I think, 6 of its 10 nominations, but Lucas and Fox advertised "7" wins because Ben Burtt won a special Oscar for creating alien languages...NOT one of the film's nominations, but certainly attributable as an Academy Award win.

I see fourteen users, I see six GUESTS, I see dead people, not necessarily in that order.  Who was the worst dressed?  Best dressed?  Who was the dopiest presenter?  Who gave the best speech?

Well, if it's okay to be a bit dishy, I have to say that I thought virtually everyone looked fantastic.

BUT....yes, it had to come...Liv Tyler is a unique (or has a unique) beauty.  It has never been more obvious than in LOTR in which she portrayed the Elven princess Arwen.  There, a team of professionals created her look.  It was VERY nice.

But in real life, poor Liv does not have the first clue that the narrowness of her face, plus the angles of her cheeks, are NOT complemented by the totally weird, zany hairdos she favors.  It throws her looks way off kilter.  Someone please toss her a CLUE!

I agree, that sweeps make the awards show a bit boring to watch.  And could someone please send the LOTR Director (& his wife) to the Queer Eye salon. :)

As for fashion, I wish I could have seen more (I don't get E - but will see more tomorrow on ET).

I LOVED Jennifer Garner's orangy dress. I loved Charlize Theron's gold shimmer. I loved Sandra Bullocks elegant white dress.   I also thought Catherine Zeta Jones (in red) and Nicole Kidman (in what looked like silver on my tv, were lovely.

I thought the Billy Crystal songs in the opening sequence were very funny (the first 3). I loved Maria/Sophia.

I also thougth the Will Farrell/John Black song was hiliarious.

That reminds me:

Jack Black can sing, man!  He's got a good voice!  I was stunned!

Will I now bother to watch the awards? I am so pleased that Peter Jackson has been so rewarded for such a labour of love and for the joy he has given to so many with his commitment. The LOTR fantasy trilogy may not be to everyone's taste but excellence has certainly been rewarded.

Who was the worst dressed?  Best dressed?  Who was the dopiest presenter?  Who gave the best speech?

Worst dressed: Diane Keaton
Best speech: Charlize Theron - she is the only one who brought tears to my eyes - I LOVE HER!

Oooohh.....nooooo.... Diane Keaton was wonderfully attired.  "Annie Hall" LIVES!

No one BUT Keaton can pull that look off as well.  LOVED the hat!

I wish she'd won Best Actress....but youth continues....

I thought Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Z. were both extrememly glamorous looking this evening! Beautiful, beautiful gowns! Actually most of the women looked wonderful!

I enjoyed that Billy the interview guy. He was kinda funny...and I loved it when he made Keisha Castle-Hughs go over and meet Johnny Depp! I thought that was funny!

And Billy Crystal singing to Clint Eastwood was great also!

Otherwise  I didn't find this years Oscars to be all that exciting and I am so disappointed with the "in memoriam" from the last few years. They used to show so many people, but now they only seem to show a select few. I was surprised that Karen Morley was shown, however!

Charlize Theron, IMHO, gave the finest speech of the evening.
Peter Jackson ran a close second.
The Canadian winner for Best Foreign Film.
Annie Lennox was brimming with sincerity.

I'm with DR RLP, in that I wasn't trusting my feelings about the Oscar wins for LOTR:ROTK.

I'm overjoyed with their wins, but, first and foremost, I am happy to be alive at a time when such historical film making is taking place.

I would also like to add that this will have been the 40th year (quite possibly the 41st) that I have watched the Oscar cast. . .that first one I watched was rather special, too:  Julie Andrews was shown what American hospitality was all about.

As for Sean Penn:

HOO-RAY!

And I hope Bill O'Reilly (Fox News' resident YELLOW JOURNALIST) is slobbering all over his hate-mongering self because of it.

Last year, in mid-year, O'Reilly declared that Sean Penn and Alec Baldwin were DEAD in the film business.  That nobody would hire them.  That their daring to have and speak their opinions in opposition to Bush policy about Iraq (and Penn's visit there) had made them poison and that their careers were finished.

HAH!  And HAH-HAH!

If Lord of the rings was nominated for best cinematography and sound editing they probably would have won those too!!

DR td:  I thought Theron was just fine during the first minute, but she lost focus and rambled histrionically after that...much like the babbling done by Halle Berry two years ago.  She was excited, I know.  :)

I felt so sorry for Fran Walsh...she won two Oscars and barely managed to say anything except at the end of the Song Oscar playout....Lennox took up all the  time, but she was only a third of the composing team.  Shore had already won the Score Oscar and was glad to let someone else talk.  When Walsh won the Oscar for Best Film with Jackson and the man who rambled on and on and on...again she got no opportunity to speak.

Fran Walsh SHAPED the screenplays with Peter Jackson and co-produced all three films and wrote lyrics for Into the West and Gollum's Song.  She deserved a moment in the spotlight.

Time to say good night.

It was a satisfying Oscar cast for me.  No major surprises EXCEPT that the best film won everything it was nominated for!  That so SELDOM happens!

Oh, yes.  I do have a comment about the trend to give Oscars to young actresses on their first nominations:

Where are Helen Hunt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Halle Berry and WHAT are they doing that continues their careers down the path toward future Oscar-worthy performances?

Huh?

What?

Nobody Knows?

Harrumph!

Best visual:  Roger Moore getting tromped!

MICHAEL Moore.  Dumb shi...take mushroom.

Good evening, one and all!

Enjoyable Oscar telecast.  Billy Crystal is always on when he hosts these awards.  I was so thrilled to see Sean Penn and Tim Robbins win the Best Actor categories.  I never saw COLD MOUNTAIN or MONSTER, so can't comment on the Best Actress categories.

Hmmm.  Weird. Guess I have to repeat what I wrote in my first post...
Good Evening. Just read the posts. Looks like a fun time was had by all at the HHW Oscar partay. My favorite moment of the Awards was Blake Edwards' audacious entrance. Other than that, no huge surprises. As I haven't seen any of the LOTR films, I can't comment on that win. Wish the Triplets of Belleville song had won.
I want to win one of those little naked gold men before I die.

...I don't mean I'd like to win one and pass away. That would be a bit of a downer. But I'd like to get an Oscar before I'm senile and in the Old Writers Home. I've been practicing my speech since I was a kid.
