Title: GOBBLE-GOBBLE
Post by: bk on November 24, 2004, 12:02:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've gobbled the notes up, or rather pre-gobbled the notes up, and now it is time to post until the pre-gobbly cows come home.

Yesterday afternoon, der B and I indulged ourselves and went to see the new Jerry Bruckheimer/Nick Cage film, National Treasure.  We'd agreed that it would probably be better seen on a large screen, and as usual it was nice to be right.

It's a piece of fluff, of course, with Sean Bean as a suave villian opposite Cage's ernest good guy.  John Voight is nicely cast as Cage's dad, Harvey Keitel does right with the FBI role, and Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha round out the leads.  There are lots of set pieces, including the obligatory car chase, the obligatory Mission: Impossible break-in, the obligatory entering-the-ancient-secret-hiding-place.  And there was the obligatory Jerry Bruckheimer music, sort of like what can be heard on Iron Chef but even more so.

But it's all good fluff.  Most of the film is set along the northeastern seaboard, from Washington (yep, that's the National Archives, inside and out) to Philadelphia (yep, that's Reading Terminal Market, with one of my favorite book stores in the background) to NYC (yep, there's...no, I've only walked past Trinity Church, never been in it).  Will the film earn Cage another Oscar?  Of course not.  But it solidifies his reputation as one of his generation's acting chameleons, gracefully moving from serious films to audience pleasers, from character to very different character, sort of like a male Merle Streep or a goofier Tom Hanks.

So go, have a good time at the matinee.  And it's PG, so you can take those neices and nephews, if you want.

THE FAN - for some reason, I liked the book, and was very disappointed in the movie, but then I only saw it chopped up on television - but the ending was changed drastically!

I love to discover albums and then find them on CD!  And that WSS jazz album is one that was used in my dance class MANY years ago....we did some routines to it ....it is exciting!

My question for ASK BK day - and I remembered it from Monday - who is the BEST director you worked with (so far) in your TV acting career, and did you realize it at the time?

Yes, my Amazon review was up INSTANTLY and my corrections/edits were up almost as fast!

Going to read DRMS review right now.

One post to accompany the notes. Oh, my.

Well, I have been errant and truant myself. I am tying up loose ends at work before vacation (and first Turkey Day).

We are having guests for Thanksgiving. Friends we met in Key West in 2003 and then spent time with in England over Christmas are arriving today and will be coming to Long Island for an "American" Thanksgiving (whatever that is). Anthony is on the Island already, helping his mother prepare for the big even and I will meet our friends tomorrow late morning after they watch a bit of the Macy's Parade live on the streets of New York. We will then brave the hordes of people and take the LIRR (that's Long Island Rail Road to those of you outside of New York) to Ronkonkama (and they say that Coon Rapids is a funny name) where we will stuff ourselves with turkey, green bean casserole, yams (I LOVE yams), a pre-meal antipasto, 3 different pies and ice cream. They will get to see Anthony's world-famous doll house as well.

I'm here at the office for half a day then it's home to do laundry, run to Penn Station to get my ticket for tomorrow and do sundried last minute chores. We will be on Long Island until Sunday because Anthony has two, count 'em, two Baxter shows on Saturday. Sorry I can't join you TD and Larry. I will be there in spirit. TD, I told them to expect you at Footlight. If you didn't get to Academy last time, try again this time. It's at 18th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in the middle of the block on the south side of the street. Just a couple of doors away from that is the re-opened children's book store, Books of Wonder. They have moved into a bigger space and have re-opened with a Cupcake Cafe as part of the set up. Yummm. Right now Cupcake isn't up and running (they're still working on the space) but every day until they open the Cafe puts out free cake and cupcakes and pie, so walk by and grab a goodie from Cupcake while you're looking for CDs.

A couple of things about The Fan.

Once of the songs: "Hearsts, Not Diamonds by Hamlisch and Rice was actually nominated!!!!.........for the worst song of the year at the Razzies!

The film was basically a slasher film dressed up with so called respectability with actors like Lauren Bacall, James Garner, Maureen Stapelton, Hector Elizondo.

Some future well know actors were also in it:

Terrence Mann, Dwight Schultz Anna Maria Horsford, Dana Delany and Liz Smith

The late Reed Jones played the choreographer was one of the original cast members of Cats.

SPOILER ALERT RE: THe ending of the film vs the book

They actually film the ending of the book where the Lauren Bacall dies allowing herself to be murder by the fan. However the preview audiences hated that and it was refilmed where she kills the fan and walks away up the aisle of the theater. If you look closely it is not Lauren Bacall who is walking up the theater aisle but a double and it is taken from the back so that you do not see the face. Also ultimately where the fan gets the knife is ultimately not possible considering what happened seconds before.

My favorite parts were the rehearsals and performance of the “songs” in the musical Bacall was doing. If there are stupider songs please point me to them.

I haven't seen The Fan, so I don't know how this compares. But I thought "Otto Titsling" from Beaches (lyrics by Bette Middler) was pretty stupid.

Academy is one of our scheduled stops on Friday once we get in and settled!  I had a ball there with DR MDS, and if you're shopping on a budget, Academy is a great place to go!
I packed last night so that I would be sure to travel light.

Good morning, all!  Well, I slept late this morning, and I'd guess it's because of not sleeping well in an unfamiliar hotel bed.  I'm always neurotic, but moreso when I travel.  I'm waiting right now to call the Post Office so I can walk over and collect two days worth of mail.

DRBen, I'll miss seeing you this weekend.

DRtd, do I have your hotel phone number?  I may want to meet you at Academy on Friday afternoon, if that's when you're going.  We need to plan schedule for Friday.  I need to be at the recording office on Saturday until around 1:00.

Dear Friend BK, what is your planned itenerary while you're in NYC?  Besides the reading, are you planning to see anything?

That might have been me, DR MB.  In any case, I think I will put this one on my Christmas list now.

Also, check out this item  (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2622&item=5934178584&rd=1) on eBay.  I was going to put in a bid, but I thought it too pricey in the end (but then, I'm cheap that way.)

Good Morning!

...And then the rains came... UGH!  All I can say is that it better clear up tomorrow like the weathermen and weatherwomen on TV have promised.  I slept well last night, but I'll most likely end up taking a nap - planned, but most likely unplanned - sometime this afternoon.  Just seems to be the kind of day to hide under the comforter for an hour or two.

Some notes on THE FAN:

It was the movie that introduced Michael Biehn to movie audiences. I was instantly attracted to him, despite the lurid, slasher mentality of this film, despite the big stars.

Sorry, I don't care if it did get nominated for a Razzie. I like "Hearts, not Diamonds." Not the way Bacall sings it, of course, since her foghorn voice doesn't ever do any ballad justice, but I'd love to hear a real singer like Debbie Gravitte handle it. (And how ludicrous for an audience to stand in exultation after Bacall's awful rendition.)

DR Jane, I would have offered to tape you the movie.  But I only read your request AFTER 10pm last night (which is when it was on here).  Plus I don't have a dvd recorder.

DR George, I LOVED that fairy from last night.  Really beautiful.

Question for DRs:  I wanted to copy that fairy and send it to someone.  What would be the simplest way.  I ended up copying the pic to a disk and then attaching it to my email.  But there must have been an easier way to click and copy, right?

A SEASONAL LEVITY

Quote
A young man named John received a parrot as a gift.
The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary.
Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and
laced with profanity.

John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude
by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and
anything else he could think of to "clean up" the bird's vocabulary.

Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the
parrot. The parrot yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot
got angrier and even ruder. In desperation, John threw up his
hands, grabbed the f@$ing bird and put him in the freezer.

For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked
and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was
heard for over a minute. Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly
opened the door to the freezer.

The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's
outstretched arm and said, "I believe I may have offended you with my
rude language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior."

John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he was
about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change
in his behavior, when the bird continued, "May I ask what the turkey did?"

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

der Brucer

If anyone is the mood for a good cry, and if the show has yet to air in your area, today's "Ellen DeGeneres" show is her Thanksgiving show.  More like a Giving Thanks show.  It's dedicated to all the troops serving over in the Middle East.  It's only been on for 20 minutes so far, and I've cried twice!

DR Noel - Go to Starbucks - I'm sure there's one near you.  Go the little "bar" where they have the cream, half&half, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, cocoa, etc.  Grab a handful of sugar packets - I think the "Sugar in the Raw" ones are the biggest ones.  Walk out of said Starbucks back to your abode.  Place required amount of sugar packets underneath the requisite leg of your table.  And if you're concerned about the sugar packets opening, just place them in a plastic baggie, and/or in the padded envelope that "Writer's Block" came in.

Hmmmmmmmmm....Penny Marshall was just on some Entertainment show and was asked about her concern over the recent basketball violence.  She said:  "It's not the people in the expensive courtside seats that are causing the problems....it's those people up in the other seats....."

A quick good morning. Must prepare for a meeting at 2. Had a much needed dentist appointment this morning that I had to reschedule because I realized that no way could I go to the dentist and be ready for the meeting.

Am looking forward to preparing a Thanksgiving feast tomorrow -- allowing for the fact that I have never used this oven before. I may ask the woman downstairs for stove hints -- assuming she has a similar stove. She's written a cookbook, so she might be a good source of info.

My question for ASK BK day - and I remembered it from Monday - who is the BEST director you worked with (so far) in your TV acting career, and did you realize it at the time?

Since I did mostly series work (guest shots) the directors really didn't do all that much, and the sitcoms they tended to do even less (more of a writer and producer thing).  My favorites, in terms of niceness, were Dick Kinon, Mel Swope, Joel Zwick, Hy Averback, and I'm zoning on the name but whoever directed the George Kennedy pilot I did - Charles someone I think - well known TV director.  Strangest: E. Swackhammer, who did the MASH episode I did - I never actually saw him.  I liked working with Corey Allen, Bill Asher (not easy, but we just hit it off and I never had a prob), John Newland (my first TV director - loved him), Jerry Paris (a maniac, but I had a great time), Jim Burrows, and I just can't remember the others.  Oh, and Leo Penn was wonderful to work with and very helpful.  Worst: the gal who directed the episode of Alice - Kim something I think, and the guy who directed the episode of Angie (which actually was one of my favorite guest shots and one of the best things I ever did - but that had nothing to do with the director, who was a jerk).

In commercials my faves were Stan Dragoti and Frank Oz.

For Ask BK Day, a seasonal question:

Was there ever a dish that sat on the Thanksgiving table that looked amazing, smelled amazing, but once you bit into a spoonful of it, it didn't taste amazing?

And what was the most surprising Thanksgiving dish you've had?

********

I can't remember the exact dish, but it was some dessert looking thing.  And it was someone's attempt at making a sugar-free dessert.  It looked wonderful, but after taking a bite into it, it tasted like chemicals.  Ewwww.  Apparently, the cook did not pay attention to the "do not cook over 350 degrees" warning on the box of artficial sweetener.

Most surprising would have to be the first time I tried an oyster stuffing.  Yum!

Fun filled day-before-Thanksgiving.  This afternoon, I'm seeing the tour of "Little Shop of Horrors" and then in the evening EL Eric and I are getting together with my favorite girlfriend, Raegena, and we're going to have cocktails, make s'mores, and watch the DVD entertainment, "Free To Be... You and Me"  a favorite of mine and Raegena's.  I'm sure EL Eric will just sit back and laugh at us.

I'm on a "Phantom of the Opera" kick, I'm going NUTS knowing that the soundtrack to the movie is in the stores and mine hasn't arrived from Amazon.com yet!  Right now, the Vienna Cast CD is on, I'm amazed at home much more material there is than any English language recording.

Speaking of Andrew Lloyd Webber, I've been listening to "The Woman in White", so far it's rather good.  Not a lot of reprising musical themes, the usual ALW repeating himself or re-constructing melodies, for the better here, I think, but not as much as usual.  The main orchestral theme reminds me of something from "Whistle Down the Wind", but serves itself better here than in "Whistle...", which is just bad bad bad!

The only thing I can think of is a couple of weird attempts at stuffing - they almost made me want to vomit on the ground.  I love stuffing, but there's nothing worse than BAD stuffing.  I can't remember any surprising Thanksgiving dish - surprising would be if someone served hamburgers, but that's never happened.

I wouldn't say it looked amazing, but it sounded interesting:  one year my sister (the former chef) made jalapeno chutney.  I spread a little on a piece of turkey and ate it.  I began to sweat in places that I didn't think were possible to sweat from.

The most surprising thing to ever turn up on the table was home made  spanakopita.  I never have found out why my sister began and continues to make it for Thanksgiving.  But it shure is tasty, and if you want any you better get a slice of it early.

John Barrowman...nice looking fellow who bears an uncanny resemblance to James Marsden...who, as it turns out, also has a magnificent singing voice.

Thanksgiving:  I don't, as a rule, "do" a Thanksgiving meal.  Primarily, it's because my family is 3,000 miles away.  But it's also because I've long hated the formality of Thanksgiving that was imposed upon me as a child making it one of my most-loathed holidays (whether eating with relatives or having them at our house, I was constantly being chastised/ordered around/corrected even though I was always on my best behavior and eager to be helpful -- i.e., I stayed the frell out of the way whenever I could).

As an adult, I've prepared scrumptious Thanksgiving meals for myself...and hosted a couple of large gatherings at my villa in Italy during the years I was there (in other years there I went to other villas and feasted).  I loved those.

But I really prefer my current habit of cooking up something special for myself.   This year, I'm doing a big batch of "Brunswick Stew."  It's going to cook overnight in my large crockpot, and I'm going to bake some fresh cornbread tomorrow!

YUM! YUM!  YUM!

I "may" do some turkey/stuffing/sweet potatoes over the weekend, only because there will be sales, etc., and I do like the meal, if not the endless leftovers that a single person generally winds up with.

But my real sights are set on my upcoming annual trek to South Carolina to fete and be feted, feast and frolic with the relatives and old friends of the relatives (i.e., what my mom calls "friends of the family").

I fly out the evening of Dec. 14th and return Dec. 29th.  I will return to work Jan. 3rd.

I have been planning for this, and saving vacation days for this, all year!

Sometimes depending on your browser, when you right click you have the option of "Send Image" and when you click that - am email box comes up with the file already attached.

I thought there was a way I could just right click and copy it into my message.  Even if I had to use some [img] brackets or something. :(

Btw, I will probably finish Olivia Joules before starting Writer's Block.  Although I am tempted to read them simultaneously.  I have listened to the cd though and I like it very much.

Can someone tell me what Alet sings?

Just got back from Media Play where I picked up the latest HARRY POTTER (Circuit City had it for $1 cheaper, but was $1 worth of gas to get there). I was happy to see that the racks featuring the widescreen edition were 1/2 to 2/3 empty and the racks with the full frame edition had hardly been touched. Routinely the best seller lists have the widescreen editions of films outselling their full frame counterparts. Maybe people are starting to get the message. Hope so anyway.

Good Afternoon!

Back from my walk... And, lo and behold, the rain stopped!  At least for now - the storms are still supposed to move in tonight, but, hopefully, it will clear up tomorrow as forecasted/promised.  <fingers crossed>

The Thanksgiving spirit was definitely in the air along the streets of Carytown.  Well, actually, along the "street" of Carytown, since Carytown is just along one street, Cary Street.  Lots of people were out today.  Shopping.  Window shopping.  Just walking around.  I made a few stops along the way just to say Hi to some friends and shopowners and clerks.  And I even helped one lady who was trying to find a stationery store - her daughter is undergoing surgery in town, and she figured she might as well get a head start on her Christmas cards.  I wished her and her daughter well.

Then it was down to Ukrop's where I ran into one of my college voice teachers.  And I also picked up some White House Rolls, a Chocolate Pecan Pie, and a Lattice Cherry Pie.  Then it was across the street to Montana Bread for three loaves of their Cinnamon Swirl Bread.  I figured I can't show up empty-handed tomorrow when I arrive at my parents house.  *And I was truly thankful that the rain held off during my walk back to the apartment since my hands were full.

-Of course, the challenge will be not sneaking a slice of pie or bread before tomorrow morning. ;)

I may be heading over to Steve's tonight for dinner, or I may just stay here and try to get some stuff done around the apartment.  We'll see...

Otto was a song she originally performed in her stand up act that was recorded as Mud Will Be Flung Tonight

As to Ragtime at Baldwin High School last weekend--yes, it was indeed the first school to do the school edition.  What's the difference, I don't know, since both the S word and Emma Goldman's use of the M word were intact.  Jeez!  When I was in high school we had to excise all the damns from George Washington Slept Here!

Except for some of the orchestra being out of tune, it was an excellent production--some very strong voices from kids who didn't sound like kids at all.

Unfortunately, my credit-card camera didn't have quite enough light, but still here is a picture of my wonderful niece Laura with her boy friend Eric.

Happiest of Pre-Holiday Greetings all!

I could have come home early today (3:30) but had to wait for the bus.  I used the time to finish Angels and Demons and start The Da Vinci Code.  All I can say about A & D is, “Wow!”.  I don’t want to give anything away but if you haven’t read it, do.

Question for BK and DR day, what is your favorite version of  A Christmas Carol?  Bruce might know the star of my favorite. I fear it is not very well known. I get lots of blank stares and “Never heard of it.” at work.  It’s called An American Christmas Carol and starred Mr. Henry Winkler.

All this talk about NYC, you know maybe we should try to plan a get together for sometime next year.  Its way to early now but after the first of the year we could see what time the most of us could make it. What do you think?

Our rain has just started.  I hope everyone that is out on the road or has to fly out someplace will be safe.  Funny how these storms hit right at a Holiday.  I wonder if they will be able to have the Macy’s Day Parade.  I heard on the news that it should be raining quite heavily there tomorrow.

I was looking forward to seeing  it because this is the first time I can say I was there and saw the star on the street.  I called my Mom from the little—I’m going to call it a park for want of a better word—across the street from Macys.

I LOVE the fairie as well.  May I also have it?  I also know some people I would like to send her to.

Thank you, DR Dan-the-Man, for the link to the Rankin/Bass site.  I really enjoyed looking it over.  What a shame that many of the original puppets are no more.

Might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?  You'd think it was the day before Thanksgiving.  I think we've only had two or three questions the whole day.

I watched a film called L'Appartement last night - I'd read about it on a DVD site and it sounded interesting, so I got a copy (only available in region 2 - UK or France).  I'll have a lot to say about it in tomorrow's notes, but wouldn't you know that they've already remade this movie here in the US - it came out in September - called Wicker Park, and, as always, they apparently ruined it, complete with changed ending.  Amusingly, one of the twelve-year-old "reviewers" on the imdb invokes the name of screenwriting guru Syd Field.  And therein lies the problem with American filmmaking today - Mr. Field and Mr. McKee, the Two Stooges, have done more damage to filmmaking than anyone could possibly calculate - not only in their effect on young screenwriters, but the fact that studio executives also subscribe to their ridiculous line of screenwriting-babble.

Just wanted to pop in with an early Thanksgiving greeting for all. I don't know how much computer time I will have tomorrow. I have to pick up the British guests at their hotel tomorrow morning and wend our way to Penn Station (ugghhh). I went there today to pick up my LIRR ticket for tomorrow and it was a madhouse. There are special $6 dollar fares on the train tomorrow so on my way to their hotel I will pick up their tickets as well. I didn't pick up my tickets tomorrow because I'm coming back on Sunday and the $6 dollar fare will not be available. Oh, well. We then will have an hour and fifteen minute train ride w/most likely a very full train. Then when we arrive at Chez Morelli, there will be much merriment and oohing and aahing at Anthony's doll house and there will be playing with MacGregor, the lovely West Highland Terrier and then there will be food galore. I will try to pop on for a few minutes, but in case I don't get on until Friday:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ONE AND ALL AT HHW, MY SPECIAL INTERNET FRIENDS!

We have to figure out the get-together - I haven't booked anything until that happens.  Anyone want to take on the planning of it?  It could be Sunday evening, Monday after the signing, or Tuesday evening.
Monday after the signing would be best for der B and myself.  We're going to have to kennel Fletcher anyway, but the others we'd rather not leave for more than the day.

I am trying to imagine DRJOSE walking down the street with a pie in each hand.

Actually, I had one large brown grocery bag in each hand.

The bag in my left had the three loaves of Cinnamon Swirl Bread from the Montana Gold Bakery.  It really is amazing stuff.  The bread part is actually challah!  And the cinnamon swirl is just at the perfect goo of gooeyness.  The bread is great on it's own.  It's great toasted.  But my favorite way to prepare it as French Toast!  YUMMERS!!

Meanwhile, the bag in my right hand had the two pies - Chocolate Pecan and Lattice-Topped Cherry - a cluster of Ukrop's White House Rolls; and a plastic bag filled with a King Size Hershey's Chocolate Bar with Almonds, an individual bottle of Strawberry Quik, a small order of potatoe wedges, and a custard filled, chocolate topped Bismarck (donut).  In other words, my afternoon snack.  NOT!  Well, almost NOT. ;)

Thankfully, the bag from Ukrop's had those handy-dandy handles on it.  The bag from the bakery did not have those handy-dandy handles, so I had to carry that bag in my left arm rather than with my left hand.  -And those three loaves of bread are pretty hearty!

But everything made it back to my apartment in one piece and unopened.  And, again, I was just thankful the rain did not start back up since I have no idea how I would have held my umbrella.

-Just thought I would help clarify your mental picture.  Hope this helped. ;)

I enjoyed it, but I'm a diehard.  I'm still amazed they took it to NYC.

Hey - we haven't done an apparel check for awhile....what is everyone wearing tonight?

Currently (from my toes on up): White socks (Gold Toe), light blue checked sleep pants (Old Navy - actually I think they call them "sleep bottoms"), gray boxer briefs (Hanes), and a dark blue polo shirt (Ralph Lauren).  However, up until about 30 minutes ago, I had on a pair of black jeans (Old Navy) instead of the pajamas.  Oh, and my black sneakers (New Balance) too.  -I shall elucidate in an upcoming post. :)

I know that I have been errant, and yes, even truant. But this has been an excused absence. I'm right in the middle of that hundred-meter dash you get at the end of the semester when all the term papers are due and the finals are coming up. Believe me, I would much rather be at HHW.

I just wanted to remind everyone that Thanksgiving falls on Gazpacho Soup Day this year. So don't forget to eat gazpacho soup with your Thanksgiving dinner.

I'll see you when finals are over. I'm sure you'll want to hear all about it.

Tonight, as I drove around and about the Newest of Jerseys, I spotted several homes that had their Christmas light up and on.  I'm not talking about just a few tastful electric candlesticks in the front windows or a few strands of light-up icicles.  I'm talking about full-fledged Christmas Wonderlands on front lawns emblazoning the night.

Well, why not?  The stores have been decorated since Halloween and been stocked with holiday stuff since September.  Two Philadelphia radio stations have been playing Christmas music 24/7 since the second week of the month.  Santa has already been lapping kiddies at the less prestigious shopping centers.  So, why shouldn't people have their homes decorated and lights up before Thanksgiving, too?  If the season expands a few weeks, maybe the good spirit of the holidays will extend, too.  And who couldn't use a few extra weeks' worth of goodwill to all?

SWW please stop writing about that ham without a spoiler for me-YUCK!   ;D

Having seen National Treasure I have to say you wrote an excellent review of the movie.  We also enjoyed it and found it a fun, entertaining movie.

Did you have fun at The Incredibles with the Grandlands?

Since the ham has been very well cured, I don't think it will spoil.  Der B has insisted that we use the "boil" method of cooking, which means bringing it to a slow simmer for a certain amount of time per pound.  The simmer has just been reached, the ham will be cooked by about seven this morning.

Spending the day with the grandlads was a mixed bag.  They were pretty well behaved most of the time.  The older lad, Alex (7), got a little antsy early on, wanting to run around the bookstore we dropped into instead of finding a book.  I simply told him that if he didn't settle down we wouldn't see the movie.  He settled down.

When we got into the theater and were watching the movie, he had some concentration issues.  "I don't want to watch this part," he'd tell me.  I'm not sure he understood the idea that a movie has to be watched from start to finish when you're in a theater.    Jumping around on a DVD is a different experience, and not a better one.  Then again, the parts he didn't want to watch involved kissing (understandable for a seven year old) and people arguing, particularly Mom and Dad Incredible.  I'm very unsure about how to broach this subject with his parents, if I should at all.

He's getting the idea that a movie being scary can be a good thing, however.

William (4) was wonderfully well behaved the entire day, other than at the very end when he wanted some ice cream and we just didn't have time to get any.  Sorry, little fella.

Another up-side was my remembering to take the CD soundtrack for Tarzan with us.  They both like that score, and know the songs.  When I handed the CD insert to Alex, pointing out the lyrics, he loved being able to read along with what was being sung.  That CD was our music to and from the theater.

The downside was that we got home very late.  I'll be up forever working on the Thanksgiving sides.

Just taking a break - and a cool-off - from my baking.
I have a deep dished, crumble-topped apple pie in the top oven; four pumpkin pies in the lower oven; the sweet potatoes for the pecan topped casserole on the stove. . .the kitchen is hot, hot, hot!

...And a par-tri-idge in a pear tree!

Bake away, td!

I haven't baked in a while, and I'm hoping I'll be motivated to start baking again once I start rehearsals next week.  Plus, I have a few new cookbooks I've bought over the past couple of months, and I need to give some of the recipes a test drive.

DR td - Did you remember to take the turkey out of the freezer to start defrosting?

As for The Incredibles, I liked it much more than der Brucer did.  He was bothered by the stylization of the characters, which I enjoyed.  He's also the sort who can get totally hung up on poor grammar, punctuation, typos and the like.  If something bothers him, it gets in his way and he won't enjoy a book or movie.

Me, I thought the storyline worked pretty well, as did the characters.  Edna, based on Edith Head, stole the show, of course.  I will want to see it again, on DVD, thanks to my taking a turn for as pee-break escort mid-film, but I love these films and would want it in our collection no matter what.

Question for BK and DR day, what is your favorite version of  A Christmas Carol?

My favorite version of A Christmas Carol is the Alister Sims version (which I don't think is actually titled as "A Christmas Carol"--isn't it "Scrooge" in the opening credits?)  The very close runner-up is Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol.  It was my introduction to the Dicken's story, and like DR Elmore has said, I am very attached to the score.

Another animated version that I remember enjoying very much was broadcast for a few years during the 70s on ABC.  The animation was based on the original illustrations and, though it was basically sketchy line drawings with sepia tones for the backgrounds, it was incredibly beautiful.  Someone at TVParty.com remembers it using the voices of Alister Sims and Michael Redgrave, but I don't recall that for sure.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Monday after the signing works for me.  I'd have to assume it will be done by nine so we could all meet at Joe Allen between nine-thirty and ten at the big round table in the back.  If they can't accomodate that many, we can always book the upstairs room at former Joe Allen host Angus McIndoe's.

Good Evening!

I ended up heading over to Steve's for dinner.  Originally, he was going to cook, but once I got there, there was nothing on the stove nor in the oven, so we headed over to the newly-opened Cheesecake Factory here in Richmond.  Thankfully, since we came in late - close to 9:00 - our wait was not the typical one hour + Cheesecake Factory wait.  It was Steve's first time at a Cheesecake Factory, and that was a reason for heading there.

The food was good.  Big portions.  Assertive seasoning. Nothing subtle about the meal at all, but, then again, it wasn't supposed to be.  Steve had salmon, I had beef, and we split a slice of their Pumpkin Pecan Cheesecake for dessert.  Now the cheesecake was interesting - and very good.  We both thought it would be a pumpkin cheesecake with some pecans in it.  Nope.  Instead it was a layered affair with a pecan pie layer on the bottom, topped with a layer of pumpkin cheesecake.  And a great big dollop of whipped cream on top and on the side.  Very good.  Very rich.  We were both glad we split a slice.  We both walked out with two very full tummys.

-And I also got a chance to drop off the Cinnamon Swirl loaves.  I bought two for Steve's sister and her two boys - well, three boys if you count her husband.  He'll see her tomorrow at his family's Thanksgiving dinner.  And I bought one loaf for Steve.  -And we'll most be likely having brunch this weekend - cinnamon swirl french toast!

One interesting thing about tonight's experience at The Cheesecake Factory...

There just seemed to be a weird "vibe" with the waitstaff.  Yes, it was packed, but Cheesecake Factory's are generally always packed.  It's hectic.  Lots of people walking around.  Lots of plates in and out of the kitchen.  Well...

They were out of the appetizer we had originally ordered, so our waitress came back to see if we wanted anything else - which we did.  Then one of the managers came by and informed Steve that they were out of the catfish already... so, he ordered the salmon instead.  Well..

Our waitress then came by a few minutes later... Leaned in very close to us, and half-whispered/asked, "Umm.. What's wrong now?  What did she ask you about?"  We explained to her that the kitchen had run out of catfish.  "Oh.. OK.."  -And then off she went to huddle with some of her other waitstaff.  The sense of paranoia was as thick as their white chocolate macadamia nut cheesecake!

Well...  I noticed the woman at the table next to us had to send back her entree since it contained something she was allergic to - something she had told the waitress (a different one) to leave out when she placed the order.  So, she placed another order for something else.  Well, when that order came she started to hand the plate back to the server as soon as it was handed to her - and she was pointing to "it" on the plate again.  She did order something else, but she asked that it be brought in a takeout container at this point.

What struck me as strange was that a manager did not come to the table once during the evening to apologize or even check up on things.  And there were managers walking around left and right - that's part of the Cheesecake Factory's style.  They have managers who walk around with palm pilot type deviced checking on timing, turnover, etc.  I would have thought one of them would have noticed two plates of food being sent back to the kitchen, and one woman at a table of four with no food in front of her while her tablemates ate.  Hmmm...

But then again, it could just be me.  The foibles and fables of being the son of parents in the food service industry.

As for favorite version of A Christmas Carol...

It's a tie between Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol... So many fond memories of growing up in Ledyard, CT, and going to the big Christmas party at the Coast Guard Base in New London - my father was stationed there at the time.  They showed Mr. Magoo each year in the big theatre on base.  And, magically, Santa always had a gift for each of us that was on our Christmas List!

...And Patrick Stewart's solo turn.  One of the most magical and memorable nights in the theatre for me.  I caught him during either his second or third (was there a third) run of A Christmas Carol.  I went up to NYC with a friend of mine, and we both had a wonderful time.  And contrary to what his bodyguard was "warning" everyone about at the stage door after the show, he gladly signed stuff for and acknowledged the Trekkies waiting at the stage door.
