Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a gas and smelled, and now it is time for you to post until the gaseous cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ENDEAVOR!
-
First post after BK!
-
I don’t think I have ever seen The Opposite Sex before. I can’t believe how bad it is.
-
That gas valve experience sounded really scary.
Glad everything was resolved quickly and safely.
What is it about the location of your driveway that cause so many people to use it to turn around?

Funny, I was talking about Marc Ginsburg tonight with a friend who has been a fan of Rupert Holmes since 1976, like me.
We were discussing the fact that Rupert’s album, Adventure, was never released on CD in the U.S.
His copy is from Japan.
-
I have that Japanese CD, too.

Anyway, we both like the song “I Don’t Need You”, and I shared the video of Marc singing it at the Kritzerland Rupert Holmes show.
He was impressed that anyone could sing a Rupert Holmes song standing right in front of Rupert.
He wouldn’t have had the nerve.

So, I watched the rest of Air Patrol. Anyone who loves LA needs to search it out on YouTube. It's a really good transfer for starters. After all those great Lee Towers shots, eventually we get Producer's Studio - almost the same shot that opens Nudie Musical and when the turn in and drive down the main street had they gone a tiny bit further you would have seen our offices on the left. Later, there's a shot where they store the scenery that's also in Nudie Musical. Amazing. Tons of street shots, presumably right around there. You want the 1962 Hollywood Bowl - you got it. You want Hollywood from a helicopter with an amazing overhead shot of Hollywood and Highland - you got it.
-
Bruce, maybe you could reissue it here in the U.S. (?)
My friend has the original Widescreen, but not the one you reissued with bonus tracks.
Now he wants that.
-
Widescreen, The Collector’s Edition, is selling for almost $50 on Amazon.
Love those bonus tracks.

But then the most amazing thing of all - I sat with my mouth on the floor. At the end, the bad guy is driving north on the 101 freeway. First of all, it's amazing how EMPTY LA was back then - tons of still unused lots. Anyway, he's being followed by the Air Patrol's helicopter. The shots from the car are moving just a bit too fast to read the exit signs, but then they definitely pass Laurel Canyon Blvd, my old off-ramp. And then - wait for it - he gets off at MY off-ramp - Woodman Ave. You can see the one store that was there (the May Company) where the Westfield Mall is now. He turns left, which is what I do. He passes what is now our local car wash - empty lot. He turns on the first street, Valleyheart, which runs along the Valley wash - all houses on the left rather than the ugly apartment buildings. He passes - wait for it - MY street. I was so hoping he'd turn and we could see the 1962 version of my street but he goes straight, to Hazeltine and then past Hazeltine and past my FIRST house on Valleyheart and Calhoun. I don't think you could see it but I'll rerun that bit. He ends up at the Sepulveda Dam. Just incredible. Plus, while most of the actors are just barely okay, I've always been a fan of Merry Anders, the leading lady.
-
That's our Widescreen release, right? I still have a few copies of it.
-
I’d like to see Air Patrol.
Seeing what L.A. looked like then has always fascinated me.
-
Yes, it’s yours.
May I buy a copy?
-
Not to get all morbid, but I just finished watching the news coverage of RFK’s murder at the Ambassador Hotel, June 5, 1968.
I still remember everything about that day, 55 years ago.
-
I was just waking up for school on the East Coast, with my trusty transistor radio by my side.
Heard the news, and woke up my parents.

-
That really is cool.

I would have liked to have moved to L.A. when it was less crowded.
I moved there in 1976, and the freeways were not fun.
I did love driving around Sunset Blvd…enjoyed the billboards.

Have a great day, everyone!

Let me go look in the box - I know I sold some in the last Indiegogo campaign, but I'll see if there's another here - if not, there may be some in storage.

Good morning, all!

I slept rather well. I had a strange dreaminvolving the Royal Family, me,. and Thanksgiving, but I can't put enough of it together to relate it. There was something about a construction and CDs as well.
-
I am sitting here in rubble. The damned cart that Jen put together for me lost a wheel this morning. I'm very happy it happened when I was not lugging around the cats' breakfast or mine, but I had t spend 10 minutes screwing the wheel back into it place on the frame, and now I need to pick up all the crap that fell off it.
-
I need to vacuum badly, and that 45 minutes out of my life I would rather spend on the ballet.
-
I did have one bit of good news: Indiana University's second payment landed in my account this morning. Now I can buy a new computer.
-
DR Iris, thanks for the nice words about Peter Foley. You made me cry again this morning.
-
After I pick up everything that fell off the cart this moring, I will vacuum. I must also call Access-a-Ride and schedule tomorrow's trips. I'm seeing Dr Saltzman about my stomach issues.
-
BK, I'm very happy that the gas valve issues were resolved.

Loved the Peter Foley remembrance, Elmore. Beautiful thoughts, beautifully expressed.

I read the kids their stories last night, then we usually finish with an old Sesame Street short or something on YouTube. Next thing I know I woke up in my daughter’s room at 5:30 am. Best sleep in months.

TOD Richard Crenna is great in a cheap ‘n very sleazy Canadian thriller called Stone Cold Dead
-
I also watched most episodes of the ‘80s TV show he was in with Patty Duke.
-
It Takes Two with the great Billie Bird
-
There’s an interview with Crenna where he talks about directing the Andy Griffith Show and he claims credit for changing the direction the door to Andy and Aunt Bea’s house opens on the front porch. So a true pioneer.
-
I forgot Helen Hunt was also in It Takes Two.
AND the theme song was sung by Paul Williams and Crystal Gayle. Paul had played the Uber-sleazy pimp villain in Stone Cold Dead with Richard Crenna.

AIR PATROL is on FXM Retro now and then.....that's where I saw it.
I want to see Maury Dexter's 1960 film THE HIGH POWERED RIFLE starring Miss Allison Hayes - but it seems to be a lost film. When former DR MBARNUM interviewed Maury years ago, he said he himself had only seen it once and he didn't know anyone who had a copy.....
-
Nice photos, DR JohnG!
-
DR singdaw it would be easier for you to get into GREASE than it would be for you to buy a ticket to see it.
-
Page Three - Greased Lightnin' dance.
And remember when the lyrics repeat - you repeat the same steps.
-
And when Sandy sings "Hopelessly Devoted To You", be sure to watch the ballet dancer doing her interpretive movements behind her.
Movie songs cost EXTRA to add to the show....thank you very much.

Good morning, all.

Always loved him as Luke McCoy on "The Real McCoys"
"The Sand Pebbles"
"Wait Until Dark"
"Star!"
TV movie: "The Rape of Richard Beck" (He won an Emmy as lead actor in a special)

It's supposed to rain some today, off and on, and I really need it to start soon - if it would be so kind - so as to ease, and ultimately dispel, any vestiges of guilt from not choosing to do outdoors work today. Happy to get back to that tomorrow, but I want to accomplish indoor stuff today.
-
Decent night's sleep. Dreams of no consequence (since I have no memory).
Thunderstorms began in the wee hours of the morning and continued until about 7 a.m.
Didn't mind one bit, although frequent loud claps woke me.
It's now mostly sunny, but muggy.
-
Coffee has been drunk. I cleaned my Keurig last night. Took all evening, too.
Couldn't tell any difference this morning, though. Oh, well.
I took trash out by the street for pickup (around noon).
-
TOD
I grew up only knowing him on The Real McCoys, and I know that's all I remembered him from when I saw Wait Until Dark. I didn't see The Sand Pebbles until years later, and never in a theeder. And you can throw things at me if you wish, but I have yet to see Star!

Vixmom: AVERT YOUR EYES.
Spider dream last night.
Fortunately, not a bad one. This is probably a first, but in this one I had a can of RAID at the ready, and they were mostly little ones anyway who accepted their fate without putting up a fight.

Hopefully, I will have some good food to eat.
Hopefully, all of you will do the same!!

Having never lived in a house in California (except for one brief time in between other places), I have no idea how to picture the kind of gas valve BK tells about. Maybe it isn't even exclusive to that locale, but I'm still unfamiliar with it. I have propane tanks right next to the house and I know where their valves are, but we don't have any natural gas lines running through my area.
I'm just wondering why such a thing would be in a place where a vehicle could contact it in any way.
-
I never knew about Air Patrol.
I must seek it out forthwith. And posthaste.

I watched an L.A. movie last night: Welcome to L.A.
I've been really screwed up about this one. Meaning: All along I hadn't been sure whether I'd ever seen it. It was released in 1976, but apparently not in the U.S. till early 1977. In hearing about its release on Blu-ray a few years ago I had this vague feeling that it had been more like 1971. Don't know why I had that idea. Next, I'd been thinking all along that it was a Robert Altman film. It is, but he produced it and Alan Rudolph directed it. But Rudolph had a strong connection with Altman, as did of course a couple of the cast. Anyhoo, I think I spot-checked the disc and put it away for another day. That was easily a couple of years ago. Finally, something made me think of it, and it was time to give it a spin.
Most interesting. I watched it straight through, even though I wasn't 100% into its goings on, but I had to figure out whether I had indeed ever seen it, and I had to finally have familiarity with it regardless. Believe it or not, I'm still not entirely certain that I *didn't* go to see it in 1977. If I did, it sure didn't stick with me. So that will have to remain a mystery. But great fun revisiting the still young Sissy Spacek, Geraldine Chaplin, and Keith Carradine. Whenever I see one of his films, I always find it jarring to associate that with having seen him on stage in the Encores! Paint Your Wagon. And it's still an "Altman film" to me, even though not quite.
I really wished this one had had more L.A. locations. We get some Century City from a distance, but we sure could have used a lot more. Anyway, a strange return (?) to a film that is certainly "of its time".
-

I finally watched Prime Cut last week. I think I posted that I had specifically not gone to see it. As it turns out, I did recognize the opening sequence, and one or two other scenes looked vaguely familiar. But the story itself was basically new to me, so I must have half-heartedly caught it on TV or something at some point.
So here's a question: How many films have had a scene with attempted murder by a harvester? Either I was clearly remembering this scene from a past viewing, or it's been done by others as well. And if so, which movie was first to use it?
-
No posts yet, but Seth Christenfeld posted the program cover.

DR RODZINSKI this is a typical result of that particular search.

It's so wonderful having these evenings in which to watch movies again. This is the free-est (how do you write that?) I've been for such leisurely activities since January. But going farther back than that, it's been since last July when we began rehearsing Carrie. The last two shows of the year took nearly five months out of me, likewise February through May of this year.
-
DR John your photos are beautiful. I want to go there.

Thanks for the vibes George.

The negative reviews of Days of Wine and Roses, including Rex Reed’s, are interesting because they echo a few of the comments here when Singdaw posted song samples. Namely, it sounds more like Myths and Hymns ir a song cycle.

Further on the subject of my newfound leisure/movie-watching time:
I don't know whether I said it to BK or posted it here, but on my second (or third or fourth) time through PREVIEW HARVEY, I knew this was something that will happen: I'm throwing myself a Preview Harvey Film Festival in which I'll watch, in the order of release, all the movies in the book that already mean the most to me, and others which, having "experienced" them in the book, need to be seen and appreciated anew or for the first time.
I was so happy when BK added the list of movies as an appendix. I have my marked up copy of that, indicating those films I have here (a lot) and those I need to find (a surprisingly tiny number). A rough count shows at least 50 movies that I'll be watching, which I believe includes a few of Harvey's not so great ones that I nevertheless want to see. This can finally happen, and could officially start as soon as this evening.
I've done a few such private "festivals", sometimes by design, sometimes not. For me, it can be an inspiring and meaningful way to take in a bunch of films or books or music.
-
I'm up, I'm up - six or seven hours of sleep. Needed more but have to do this coaching session.

I did a bit of Preview Harvey movie watching when writing the book, but there are some films in there that I will watch because I haven't seen them in so long.

The legendary speech in Indy after he learned of MLK's assassination.
-
I saw the original version of this song cycle under the title Saturn Returns.
Adam Guettel’s music is not for everyone, but I find some of his songs hauntingly beautiful and totally original.
-
From Rodzinski:
“The legendary speech in Indy after he learned of MLK's assassination.”
Which is why there were no riots in Indianapolis.
-
Fascinating and frustrating to hear the pleas for gun control on live news after RFK was assassinated.
They were pleading for Congress to pass laws to control gun violence.
And here we are.
-
Sad indeed, DR DR Iris.

I also like a lot of Adam Guettel's music.

DR ELMORE I read that the inventor of auto correct had died - rust in piss.
-
I like Adam Guettel's music
-
The parakeets were completely indifferent to Giselle Mackenzie.
However they love Gale Storm -- they are singing along with enthusiasm.
Favorites so far: Now Is The Hour, Lucky Lips, Ivory Tower
-
I would be interested in hearing JB's reaction to Gale Storm when DR JOHN G returns home.
-
I like Adam Guettel's music
I like some. I like his mother's and grandfather's music more. He's a nice fellow, however.
-
JB likes Put on Your Sunday Clothes from the Hello, Dolly! soundtrack. And September from Earth, Wind and Fire.
-
I may be in the minority, but I really like many of Guettel’s songs on Myths and Hymns.
I like it, too. But it’s a song cycle, not a score. I don’t hear character development the way I hear it in Light at the Piazza.

Ate at Lappert’s ice cream. Carol and I were seriously unimpressed.

But the drive to the north end of the island, where South Pacific was filmed, was beautiful.

Beautiful photos, John!
Sorry to hear that Lappert’s ice cream wasn’t as great as I remember it.
I always ordered their Kauai Pie ice cream.
Or Coconut Macadamia Nut Fudge.
It was the most delicious ice cream I had ever tasted.

It was a long time ago, before 2003.

Taro ice cream is surprisingly tasty.

My favorite place to stay was the Hanalei Colony Resort.
On the ocean, each with a lanai and kitchen.

I had the Kauai Pie. They used a not very good fudge in it. The other scoop, Kona coffee, was not frozen when scooped, so it was a bit of a mess and a miss to start with. But I will live to est more ice cream.

I had a beef taco and cheese enchilada combination.
-
I'm tired.
-
Aren't you?

I cancelled storage tomorrow - changed to Monday morning. Just can't get up that early tomorrow.
-
I just can't.
-
Wondering if I can get by without a cupcake or some sweet today.
-
I should.

But can I?
-
Well, cupcake place is closed so that's not happening. I don't feel like cheesecake so that's not happening. Beyond that, I don't know what's left.

I just don't.

Very nice.

DR ELMORE I read that the inventor of auto correct had died - rust in piss.
;D

It must be nice to have some nights free, DR George.

Good night, friends.
-
But the drive to the north end of the island, where South Pacific was filmed, was beautiful.
Very nice pictures, John!
-
We discovered a pie place yesterday called the Right Slice. Their Island Lime pie is a dream. Imagine lemon meringue but with limes. And a top crust instead of meringue. Tart, sweet and great crust.
-
Their mano-lilikoi pie was also aces.
-
Two more nice reviews for Sami on Amazon - that makes 36.
Great!

Oh, my!
-
I shall have to play the DOLLY soundtrack for Elvis & Priscilla.
-
I watched SINGIN' IN THE RAIN again.
I appreciate the homage in BABYLON most - except for maybe Brad Pitt in his undies.....
-
Yes the Canadian fires are causing some interesting weather effects here.

Oh, my!
Well, actually, the smoke in the sky is filtering the UV rays of the sun and showing it as red.

Hello
-
The past two nights Vixdad made me drink alka seltzer cold medicine before bed
-
And it did it’s job and allowed me to sleep throughout the night
-
This morning was bad though and it got progressively worse as the day progressed
-
It felts as if there were a band around my forehead getting tighter and tighter
-
And someone was squeezing my skull so my cheekbones were being crushed
-
While simultaneously pushing their thumbs in my eyes
-
With the occasional ice pick in the ear
-
I was getting tunnel vision from the pain
-
The whole day the sky was completely grey
-
It wasn’t possible to determine if it were smoke or clouds
-
But the radio reports had an air advisory
-
Then around 3:30 it turned completely black outside, almost as if we were having an eclipse
-
And then suddenly there was a crash of thunder and the rain came pouring down
-
It rained so hard we couldn’t seethe parking lot through the office windows
-
And then it suddenly stopped
-
And miraculously the pain in my head was greatly alleiviated
-
So apparently I’ve gotten to that age where my body has become a barometer
-
I don’t care for it
-
Not one bit
-
I did Wordle this morning though

Jane, how did Keith’s first treatment go?
He might feel a little bit tired, very normal side effect.
Well thank you. He was there less than 20 minutes. It is less than dental x-rays. Later the areas might be red and irritated, hopefully not too irritated, and hopefully all redness will eventually go away.
-
John, how are you feeling pain-wise?
Sounds like you’re doing very well.
So so. Some pain. Not constant.
Continued healing vibes.
-
BE WELL VIBES FOR EVERYONE!
-
And it did it’s job and allowed me to sleep throughout the night
Good.
-
This morning was bad though and it got progressively worse as the day progressed
:(
-
And someone was squeezing my skull so my cheekbones were being crushed
This is scary.
-
And miraculously the pain in my head was greatly alleiviated
Wonderful :)
-
John, keep those beautiful photos coming.
-
“Widescreen: Collector's Edition is also available on iTunes.”
Thank you for letting me know, DR singdaw.
I shared that information, and my friend immediately got it.
-
So, BK, I won’t be needing the CD after all.
-
Apparently, this friend rarely purchases CDs anymore.
He streams everything.
I still like the CD with the booklet and liner notes.
-
So, I will keep buying them, even if I become one of the last humans on Earth to do so.
-
John G., pleased that you’re feeling better.
-
Jane, glad to hear that Keith’s treatment today went well.
-
DR VIXMOM, sending healing vibes.
I wonder if you might be sensitive to the smoke and poor air quality from the fires in Canada.
-
Healing vibes to all in need.
Good night, HHW.

What a weird evening. Trying to find a movie to watch - watched ten minutes of something called The Golden Salamander but fell asleep. Then I watched a low speed police chase with an obviously nutso woman refusing to stop - two spike strips - front tires completely gone, driving twenty-five miles an hour on an empty freeway because they ran a traffic block that held everyone back and STILL it took them fifteen minutes to finally PIT her and end it. Meanwhile, the freeway was backed up for at least eight miles and the mental case wouldn't get out of her car until they finally dragged her out, clutching a - pillow. Is everyone just nuts now?
-
Then watched forty minutes of a ninety minute Police Story episode - a show I never watched beyond the pilot. Was this show always terrible, because this episode sure is - with Glenn Ford, James Farentino, Ron Masak, my old pal Christopher Connelly, Harry Guardino. Terrible script.
-
What?
-
Did someone say something?
-
Speak up!
-
There is a beautiful land where all your dreams come true.
-
So, where is it already?
-
According to Newley and Bricusse, the beautiful land is in your heart. Have you ever seen the inside of a heart?
-
Anyway, I'm patiently waiting for the beautiful land where all my dreams come true.
-
Waiting.
-
Page nine is here.
-
Jane, glad to hear that Keith’s treatment today went well.
Thank you.
-
We went to our first movie since covid.
-
We saw the new Gardians of the Galaxy.
-
I liked seeing it on a large screen.

That sounds good.
-
Thank you for the vibes I feel I’ve turned a corner
-
I am feeling much better now
-
I think I will skip the alka seltzer and just go to slerp
-
So, I will keep buying them, even if I become one of the last humans on Earth to do so.
Don't worry, Iris. You won't be!
-
But I’m staying in the recliner because lying flat still isn’t working for me
-
Jane I am sending healing vibes to Keith and also keeping him in my prayers
-
Has anyone heard from Laura?

I had to read that twice...at first I thought that the high speed chase was a scene in The Golden Salamander. ::)
;D
-
We saw the new Gardians of the Galaxy.
Now that the show is over, I'll have more times when I can see it.
-
I liked seeing it on a large screen.
BUT WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE ACTUAL MOVIE, JANE??
-
Thank you for the vibes I feel I’ve turned a corner
Very good news!!
-
Has anyone heard from Laura?
She hadn't posted since May 13. :-\
-
So, my sister's boyfriend, Larry is having his birthday next month.
-
I never know what to get him because he can afford anything he wants.
-
And since we're so close...
-
PAGE TEN DANCE!!
-
To continue, I came across some totally useless thing (things, actually) that he most likely doesn't have. :)
-
He plays the accoustic guitar and I found a couple of genuine guitar coins!
-
They're from Somalia and are actually electric guitars, but I couldn't find any acoustic guitar coins, so I got a couple.
-
They were only $18 each (plus tax & shipping), and look really nice.
-
They're copper-nickel with silver plating and small, only two inches tall, but still nice...and here they are:
-
Here's the back side:
-
It's hard to read the writing, even up close and in person, but here's a close-up of the back (it's the same for both):
-
It says:
ONE DOLLAR
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF SOMALIA
2012
-
:D
-
Yes, Laura needs to get back here and post - she's certainly posted on Facebook.
-
Rodz here, catching up...
-
Catching up is a fine thing to do on a Tuesday evening.
-
George has already gone down a rabbit hole.
-
Pardon, a damn rabbit hole.
-
Apparently, this friend rarely purchases CDs anymore.
He streams everything.
I still like the CD with the booklet and liner notes.
Those liner notes are worth the price of admission.
-
I have to say that the Andre Kostelanetz cover of Flower Drum Song is utterly beguiling and that score remains my favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein score - the tunes are amazing as is the sound of the recording.
-
George has already gone down a rabbit hole.
With reason...
-
I can't believe that i forgot fo mention this.
-
I have it on CD and in iTunes but it's mono and there was absolutely a stereo version so I wonder why this is mono? I'll have to check and see if there's any info.
-
What can one say about Kostelanetz? His name is almost onomatopoeic for his crystalline sounds.
-
Last weekend, we were talking in the dressing room and I mentioned that I have a working laserdis player, and the laserdisc release of the original Broadway production of Sunday.
-
Those guitar coins are perfect for sticking in a vending machine and then pulling them out by the guitar neck after they have paid for a candy bar.
-
Ah, what I have on CD is a bootleg.
-
Well, on Sunday (our final Sunday performance) Dan C., the actor who played Louis/Billy Webster, came in and gave me the 2-disc Deluxe Letter-Box (widescreen) laserdisc edition of West Side Story (https://castalbums.org/releases/25414)!
-
BK, you should find a copy of this to spin on a summer night or sooner.
https://www.discogs.com/release/2586300-Various-Stars-For-A-Summer-Night
-
It turns out he was bequeathed the records of someone he knew who passed away, and this one laserdisc was in amongst all the records.
-
Since he doesn't have a player, he gave it to me. :)
-
Well, it turns out that this was autographed by Tony Mordente, who played Action!
-
I'm assuming either Diane or Evelyn(?) was Dan's friend who died.
-

Finding Laserdiscs among record albums at thrift stores is a common pitfall in the record-collecting trade.
-
A very popular recent trend is finding Japanese laserdiscs of karaoke songs/videos from karaoke establishments.
-
And now for something completely different...anyone want to take part in the NOH8 Photo Shoot (http://noh8campaign.com/events)??
-
It's coming to a town near you...and me!
-
I think I had all those Columbia compilation albums - I loved them.

That could be fun, depending on what was found. ;D

Never can tell because I can't read Japanese. Old Japanese film soundtracks I buy if I see though. They often include much of a film's dialogue.

I thought that said Ferndale, WA, George, so I'd meet you there, but it's Ferndale, MI.
