And the word of the day is: UNSTINTED!
As if this evening weren't great enough, I came home to a lot of Follies orders - I knew there had to be a reason for it and there is: A lovely review from Playbill's Steve Suskin (you'll find out why he hadn't reviewed it before this): http://www.playbill.com/news/article/169776-ON-THE-RECORD-Follies-Once-More-Original-Cast-Album-Gets-Refreshed

Because Bruce is an old Jew, and must read from a paper at Sterling's Upstairs at the Thing, he's to be forgiven for getting the title of his own song incorrect in tonight's notes. He meant to write "Born Too Late," not "Born to Win." "Born Too Late," of course, was written for the wonderful "What If?" revue and it was recorded by the legendary Guy Haines on Haines' second CD, "New Guy in Town." The song, by any title, was indeed a smash at Sterling's 25 ... as was the entire evening.
Having lunch today with an old friend who we haven't seen each other in 18 years! He has temporarily moved down here.
Earlier this week a childhood friend who I probably haven't seen in 35+ years (!!) came into the store. It was a brief reunion and we will try to get together somehow. He lives in Tampa, but travels to my area on business.
Congratulations, BK, on a great show.
I don't know that I'm up to going to this event tonight - I'll only know a couple of people and I don't like to "network" - we'll see how I feel closer to seven.
DR Elmore, I think we can all agree that it is "incumbent upon you" to post photos of the table. If you somehow failed to take a "before" picture, please let the paint dry, strip it off, and do so before repainting and taking the new picture. Thanks in advance.
Today will be wonderful! Right?Yes, sir.
It's a beautiful autumn day outside...
And...

The mistake was worth it since he got you to post :)
Hi Mark.
I'm thinking about dinner. I am also thinking about the last legs my refrgerator is standing on!

Hi Mark.
Hi, Jane! Thanks for noticing I actually posted!
I'm glad for the orders, bk, but I couldn't help but notice that, as Elmore has pointed out, there's very little music in the Playbill review. And I found some of his few comments on the orchestrations, as heard in the new mix v. the original, rather bizarre. But if it sells copies ...
Okay, okay, I confess. I am currently eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's Karamel Sutra!
I'm pretty sure we had pizza from the New Haven location. New Haven had a number of excellent pizza places, all cooked in big wood ovens. In the year we lived in Connecticut we had some good pizza when I took the time to drive to New Haven. It didn't take long to get there but traffic & parking was always an issue.

I found parts of his review entirely weird - it's basically a rave, I think, but when he says that the Angel Broadway reissue went a long way to setting things right, it's just foolish. It was no better than the previous issue because it was just remastered without any thought. The only way to improve Follies is to do what we did - and his review, more than any other, doesn't dwell on the astonishing difference in quality that every single other person has commented on. I think he really liked it and I'm appreciative of the review, which is selling CDs just because it's letting some people know it exists - how they didn't know that is the enigma of the day, but we've sold about sixty CDs since the review hit. But yes, there are very peculiar things in it.

Okay, okay, I confess, I am currently about to order a Frank Pepe's pizza.

I am glad you think so. They wouldn't even deliver to my address.

I'm gald you said something about that. I was keeping my opinion to myself, but basically I thought the review was rather strange.

Yes, there are many great original pizzas from the New Haven area that I've yet to try, but I can honestly say I've never been disappointed at any I've had so far. There really is nothing quite like "New Haven" or "Connecticut" pizza. Of course, New Haven also claims credit for creation of the hamburger. That's a lot of responsibility.
We had a nice afternoon. We drove 45 minutes to the little historic town of Jacksonville and ate lunch on the pretty patio at a Mexican restaurant. The margarita & guacamole we shared were very tasty. The lunch was good but not as good. After lunch we walked around a bit and went in a few of our favorite shops. The last stop was to pick up 3 bottles of Creamy Walla Walla salad dressing they were holding for me.
I'm going to watch the PBS series "Broadway or Bust" tonight.

DR TCB, how do you know this has poppyseeds? I had to go look at the bottle. This dressing is made by Mrs Beekman's Kitchen. I purchase in a charming shop called Farmhouse Treasures.

Well, I know that Bellinger Farms in Oregon sells a Onion and Poppyseed Dressing. I think it is available on line.
For your viewing pleasure:
Left: original tomato pie, spinach, bacon, garlic
Right: mozzarella, pepperoni, double garlic

My Walla Walla Creamy looks more like your Walla Walla Onion Creamy Cucumber Salad Dressing.
Well, here is the one that I was thinking about.

Glad to hear that last night performance went so well.
You should record the Marvin Hamlisch show. I don't think there has ever been an album dedicated to the songs of Mr. Hamlisch. If I may suggest at least one song: "Dreamers" from the musical about Jean Seberg

That looks just like the Walla Walla Sweet Onion & Poppyseed Dressing, with the same name, at the Farmhouse site. I wonder if Bellinger Farms gets their dressing from Mrs. Beekman.

We also watched Broadway or Bust and quite enjoyed it. I think a lot of these kids have watched too much GLEE and SMASH.

Bellinger says that they make their dressing.
Well, I just finished "Super 8." It was reasonably enjoyable...not fabulous, but not a stinker. Anyway, my sister just called saying that she has some cupcakes. Jane, they're vegan...and they're always good. So, I'm off to my sister's for some cupcakes.

If I were living in Ohio today (thank you, Jesus!) I would probably be clinging onto SMASH like a life jacket. I'm sure for a lot of those kids, planning on college theatre programs and wanting to work on Broadway, GLEE and SMASH are indicative of what the real theatre life is like. I think these high school winners are really lucky for the chance to have a workshop like this.

Oh, I do, too! It was especially exciting when the one guy got to sing with Michael Feinstein. I think a lot of them have learned their songs from recordings. One girl even admitted that she'd never sung her number with a piano.
158 auditions???
There was kind of a flurry of "creperies" back in the late 70s, early 80s. Anybody remember The Magic Pan? That was my introduction to crepes.

158 auditions???
Well, I think it was more like 145-ish auditions due to the no-shows. The numbers for the Spring Convention are a bit higher, usually 220 each day. -And the Spring Convention runs three days.
And I play for all of them.
www.SETC.org
*And this coming Spring will mark my 20th Year with SETC. I've played for all but three of the Spring Conventions and all but two of the Fall auditions since 1993.
Have I ever foisted my WHAT I DID FOR LOVE spoof here? That was fun.
WHAT YOU DID GOT SNUBBED - the Kleban Award parody

(semi-inside joke is that we're big fans of the writing of Adam Gwon, who won the Kleban Award that year, so the use of "Gwon" on the "gone" part of the lyric is actually done with a bit of good-natured fun)
