Am I the only one who remembers the series of readings of musicals done at Town Hall in the 1970s? It was something like a precursor to Encores, but as I recall very sparsely attended. I remember seeing Madeleine Khan as Amalia and Rita Moreno as Ilona in a reading of She Love Me and, yes, I was coming to that, Richard Kiley as Stuyvesant in Knickerbocker Holiday.

By some coincidence, the friend who gave me the Toronto performance also gave me a complete SHE LOVES ME from Town Hall dated 3/29/77! I have two friends in the cast, Michael Hayward Jones as Keller and George Connolly as Arpad.

Actually I was at the Antwerp Station, which is right next to the Zoo, curiously, in 1976. [I was teaching math courses in Esperanto during the summer session of the Free University of Antwerp.]

I think I reported at length on Hairspray, when we saw it a few years ago. The standby, Leslie Kritzer--she of the famous name--went on and completely blew us away as Tracy. Only she wasn't fat. And Bruce Vilanche gave her flowers and an extra bow at the end.

Unless something more presing arrives in the mail today, I'll be working on the standard DVD of BEDTIME STORIES this afternoon. Since I've viewed all of the bonuses already, it's just a matter of watching the film again to ascertain the video and audio quality of the regular DVD.

With a light workload, I should be able to get to something fun to watch later. I'll likely watch another Warner Archive selection: THE SERGEANT. Not that it's a fun movie, but I'm anxious to see it again after many years. Fingers crossed about its quality. The only one of the five I bought initially that I've had time to watch had very good video quality, so I'll keep optimism high until I've actually viewed it.

The most recent standby I've seen in a show was at SPAMALOT when both Tim Curry and Sara Ramirez were out. John Bolton was a fabulous Arthur; I really don't see how Curry could have been any better. Rosena Hill was the Lady of the Lake and she had a very strong and effective voice for the role.

I've mentioned this before but when I saw CABARET in 1968, Jill Haworth was still with the show, but we saw Anita Gilette as Sally at a Saturday matinee, and I'm assuming Gilette played the matinees and Haworth the evening shows, so I guess that really doesn't count as a standby.

When The Unsinkable Molly Brown National Company came to Denver, I was lucky (?) enough to see Grimey Tams sleepwalking through the rôle, but one night she was out and everyone who came in disappointed left delighted to have seen Karen Morrow.

I ended up liking the show a lot.....went to Sam Goody's on the following Monday to get the CD, which they didn't have....so I bought it online. Much easier. I liked the framing device they used to open and close the show very much....and of course Jeremy was excellent!

I'm so envious! His sense of humor and sense of fun was SO on display. I'm sure he'd be a complete delight to know as a person.

I have been watching a few more of the early 1950's Hammer Noirs. Last night I watched BAD BLONDE with Barbara Payton and Tony Wright....sort of a low rent Postman Always Rings Twice....promoter's wife falls for young boxer....murder follows. Didn't make it through Man Bait with George Brent and Diana Dors. Then I watched Stolen Face....Dr George Brent all tired out takes a vacation meets concert pianist Lizabeth Scott....falls in love with her. She leaves him without explanation (she is engaged to someone else) - he does his usual woman's prison charity plastic surgery work. AND he gives one unfortunate shoplifter with a scarred face....Lizabeth's face! And marries her. She causes him endless trouble, and then of course Lizabeth comes back because she loves him and has broken off her engagement. The girl with the stolen face has the grace to fall from a moving train, so a happy ending happens.

THIS COULD BE A MUSICAL!!!! For sure!
