Well, you've read the notes, the notes went on (and on, and on), and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently going on, too.

Good morning all!

DR S. Woody White,  I can imagine that you and DerB are in quite a lot of pain this morning.

I can't help but feel somewhat sorry for the dog as well.  Maybe he just didn't know how to greet someone the right way.

My thoughts and prayers are with our Dear TCB today.  I wasn't going to take the laptop with me today but then thought I couldn't wait to get home to find out if there is any news about how he is doing.

I'm also glad that things didn't go quite so badly for our Dear BK.

DR Jennifer, I hope that your neck is much better and that your headaches go away.  With all of the assorted problems that I've had, migranes aren't one of them for which I shall be forever grateful.

I know so people who get them at work and I feel so sorry for them when they get them.  A sinus headache is bad enough when it hits behind your eyes and cracks in your nose.

Vibes to feel much better!

Cheesy sci fi and horror films.  Well, I know it wasn't a film (well I guess it was) but Dark Shadows (much as I love it) has to top the list.

DR S. Woody White,  I can imagine that you and DerB are in quite a lot of pain this morning.

I can't help but feel somewhat sorry for the dog as well.  Maybe he just didn't know how to greet someone the right way.
The only part, for me, that is physically painfull is the tetanus shot, right in the upper arm, which will probably be hurting for a couple more days.  There's a bit of emotional pain, but I have to put that aside.  And der B says he's feeling fine.

We're both feeling sad for Blackie, too.  The dog has been abused and ignored, and now he'll be all but unplaceable.  That's not good.

While at the hospital, the clerk who came in to quiz me on information told us that, by law, we had to report the incident to the SPCA.  Well, the Delaware SPCA is the enemy, loves to put down dogs and any other animals at the drop of a cyanide pill.  Der Brucer, who was with me in the room at the time, realized what was going on, and began to protest.  The clerk, taking offense, told der B "I'm not talking to you, I'm talking to him," nodding in my direction.  Then der B realized the second half of the situation, and said that any information the clerk needed, I could answer as truthfully as I could.

The joke on the system was, I didn't have the information the SPCA needed.  I didn't know where the kennel where I was hit is located, just that it was somewhere in Pennsylvania.  I didn't know the full names of the people caring for Blackie, or the name of their organization.  And I didn't know how to contact them.  So I had little, if any, information to give the SPCA.  As they say, ignorance is bliss.

I took that as implied.  And thank-you.

As for Dark Shadows, a couple of films were made during the run of the series.  And they were appropriately cheesy, of course.  (They wrote around the actors who were in the films by featuring the actors that weren't filming the movies in the series.  Quentin wasn't in the first film, so he was a daily featured character during that filming period.  "Quentin's Theme" was played a lot, and became a hit single, because of this, I recall.)

Good morning, DR Danise and all of you lovely folk!  Did our DR TCB mention how long he will be in hospital?  I have my fingers crossed today for a sppedy recovery.

Yesterday, my former intern Dylan moved in for the summer, and he's already gainfully employed by my former employer Barnes & Noble.  We watched the painful-to-endure I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE last night, and I suspect - since Dylan is studying filmmaking - the DVD player will be quite busy all summer.

DR Ben, I will not be going to Toyland today.  I need to refill a perscription this morning, run a couple of errands, and finish this last Mario chart.

Any mention of cheesy sci-fi television has to include Doctor Who.  Yes, it's again a television series, particularly in it's early years, but a couple of films were made based on the show.  I've seen a bit of one, and it was quite cheesy.  Mostly Cheddar, if I'm not mistaken, and a bit of Stilton as well.

The current series is not cheesy, of course.  Television makers have learned too much about production values, dang them all to heck.

Starring Miss Allison Hayes as the TITular character.  With William Hudson and Yvette Vickers.

Written by Mark Hanna, photographed by Jack Marquette, directed by Nathan (Juran) Hertz.  With a rousing score by Ronald Stein (released on CD by MR BK).

Surreal more than anything....with a poignant stinger ending:

"She finally got Harry, all to herself!"

The poster by Reynold Brown is a classic and probably as much as anything responsible for the film making $400,000 on its initial release May-September, 1958.

I'm not a big fan of cheesy sci-fi and horror, and I haven't seen many of the films already mentioned. But I would have to add my vote to the Joan Crawford epics like BERSERK which are so horribly bad, and she's trying so hard in them as if they were Academy-Award calibre stuff. Makes them even more hilariously awful.

I recorded "10.5 Apocalypse" last night while I watched "Desperate Housewives".  Very interesting developments on "DH"....as MattH indicated, it was a bit brutal...but I kinda liked it.

Cillaliz, if your watching the NBC disaster was for same reason I recorded it, then you wanted some escapist fare that offered some CGI effects to show what would happen to our continent if a major earthquake struck.

I changed channels during commercial breaks and saw lots of the same old tired cliches of "disaster epic filler" of stalled cars and folks trudging through rubble...and far more footage on that than on the actual disaster footage itself.  Still....so long as I have fast forward, I should be relatively entertained when I watch.

Hiya, gang!

I loved the show!!! The whole audience seemed to feel the same as i did - and I don't think there was an empty seat in the gallery. Packed! I love that part!!!

So many wonderful things about the show and the performances. yes, the kid playing Zubrick is a real Star! Charismatic, totally-committed, has wonderful instincts and great timing, a very maleable face, wonderful physicality, he can even fa' chrissakes SING! My companion for the evening said over and over how much he admired that performance, and thought the kid can Be Somebody. i agree.

The girl playing the Mother has a really terrific voice, sings so well, it's one of those lovely limpid Broadway soprano type voices. her diction is flawless, so every lyric can be understood. She's so appealing onstage, and made all her transitions with skill. The Narrator has a lot of pizzazz and skill - perhaps is still coasting on his looks and talent, of which he has plenty.

The songs are so good, and for the most part were sung well - big torch number was delivered with real commitment and flair and pizzazz - by an actress whose limited voice and untrained singing didn't stop her from showing off some brilliant lyrics and a terrific tune.

So many wonderful laughs - some laughs went on and on. A few of the songs literally stopped the show.

AND - folks, I've done "staged" readings. With good directors and limited time and professional actors -- I never participated in a "reading" where virtually the entire show was staged, and choreographed, and even costumed better than most community theater mainstage offerings. I was led by this past week's post to expect the worst. Except for a couple of beginning actors just learning their craft, and one or two kids with reading deficiencies - who nevertheless did quite well - this reading represented the show and the songs well. I would produce it if I had a theater at my disposal.

About DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES

spoiler--------------------

I enjoyed the flashbacks even though Jesse Metcalfe has definitely muscled up since his stint last season. It was great seeing him again and also Steven Culp as Rex. And the producers found a GREAT match to play Andrew as a young boy. Looked very much like Shawn Pryform as a younger boy.

But the thoughts of having to endure a season or more with that bitchy single mother gives me hives. I loathed her on sight and continued despising her throughout the show even though I applauded Lynette standing her ground.

Setting up Bree with another psycho: not my idea of entertainment.

I never liked the Applewhites, but I have to admit the backstory on the crime and the resolution of it last night were very satisfying. Nice way to get them off the show.

I had read that creator/writer/producer Marc Cherry admitted that the show was top heavy this season with talented actors and there just wasn't enough time to give them all their due, so they're cutting back on regular cast next season. I hope that doesn't mean Richard Burgi (Karl) gets written off the show (seemed that way last night). He's one of the reasons I continue to tune in.

Nice to hear PennyO's comments.  I said to some people last night (jokingly) that most "staged" readings consist of actors standing up and going to microphones and then sitting down.  I, of course, don't understand that concept and just staged the show.  I am proud of all my students - my frustration with a couple of them stems from their inability to listen and take direction in even the most perfunctory way.  That's what irks me, not their talents.  I have no problem if someone is less than brilliant as long as they listen and do what's asked to the best of their ability.  But, when they don't, when they just go their own way and it hurts the show and their fellow performers, then I get annoyed with them - again, not because of talent, but because if you're in a theater academy you must learn to listen and have discipline - and it's not as if I haven't given the exact same notes over and over again.

Still, it's fun to hear and see the show on its feet, and I think the one thing that was clear is that it works in the way we intended.

Tammy and Lauren are both "ringers" in the sense that they've both done professional shows, but they also both attended the class and get full credit for it.

Oh! And Mr. Kimmel does INDEED look very svelte and youthful, having restored his boyish figure. I just saw him a couple of weeks ago... amazing transformation!

Bruce, I'm sorry you were so irked and angry all week. Even though they are students - which means they are still learning ALL aspects of the work - and NOT "university" students, either, bucko! - these are community college students - they did well last night. They wanted it to be good, you could tell they liked the material, and for the most part, they did the best they could. Which was pretty damn good, Bruce.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't teach them theater craft essentials - like punctuality and discipline and speak up and enunciate and show up, and learn your music and and and... but "talent" is subjective and some people DO read slowly and with difficulty - and most of these kids have no expectation that they will earn a living at this. I was charmed by them, and entertained by them, and won over by their efforts last night. All of them.

Gregg's playwright boyfriend is having an affair with the leading actor in the book - which is what sends her off the deep end....and even though Suzy Parker isn't MUCH of an actress, she is stunning to look at.  And Hope Lange is great....Diane Baker is okay.  And her good working relationship with Crawford on TBOE, got Baker the co-starring role in STRAIT-JACKET when first-cast Anne Helm and Crawford clashed on the first day of shooting.

Lost two great musicians recently. I just read about Freddie Garrity from Freddie and the Dreamers. 'I'm Telling You Now" was a swell hit.

And just found out Grant McLennan, the lead singer of one of my favorite bands, the Go-Betweens, died in his sleep a couple weeks ago. They were a marvelous, literate, and melodic band from Tomovoz's land, and they never made it big here, or anywhere really, but one of their albums called "Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express" got me through college. The band had broken up and just re-formed in recent years to much critical acclaim.

ADELANTO, Calif. - It was a sod story for a Mojave Desert homeowner whose entire front yard — grass, bushes and sprinklers — was hauled away by a thief.

The homeowner telephoned law officials to report the yard in front of his under-construction home was gone, sheriff's spokeswoman Staci Johnson said Tuesday.

Witnesses told the homeowner they saw the thief taking the sod, plants and irrigation system to a nearby residence, Johnson said.

David Roger Bowers, 34, was arrested at the home and booked for investigation of grand theft and possession of stolen property, the sheriff's spokeswoman said.

The landscaping materials were returned to the victim.

Vixmom thanks for the vibes and the laugh.  Your dream was funny.

My second big laugh for the day-SWW & DerBrucer- “ignorance is bliss”.  I loved the story.  I hope they haven’t given up on Blackie & find the right foster home for him.  With work he should learn not to jump like that.

I still remember training our Siberian Husky who was stubborn even by husky standards.  One day after he listened to me I leaned down with an excited “good boy” at which point he jumped up and banged his head into my nose.  I swear he broke it & it hurt for months.  I realize now I’m lucky he only got me with his head and not his teeth.

Actually, Ron, I think I was just too lazy to change the channel.   ;)

I had written that we have decided we need to stay home today. The weather bug has been blinking a warning, and there have been warnings on the news about the dust storm danger that is expected to go on all day. I am usually pretty fearless about driving, but dust storms really frighten me. The segment of I-10 across Arizona is dangerous during a dust storm. I'm sorry I can't make it tonight -- I was really looking forward to it.  :-(

Thanks for this information. I finished the film this afternoon and then flipped back to early in the movie (Crawford's introduction) and put on the commentary and started listening. The author is one of the people who is commenting on the film, but a film scholar is also on the track and their comments have been edited together. I didn't get very far in listening, but with this new ionformation from you, I may go back and listen to some more. I suspect the author will mention these changes as we get deeper into the film.

I'm curious to watch this again to see if I can find anything entertaining about it now. The first time I saw it years ago, I thought it was one of the worst movies I ever sat through and was so disapppointed for Doris Day that it was such a clunker.

Well... D. Day, hotelier, mentioned in her auto-bio that she met someone on JOSIE who played a supporting role...who got his own series that ran when her show was on, and that they had a fine satisfying affair even though he was married.

Never been able to figure out who it was....Goerge Kennedy?  David Hartman?  Enquiring minds want to know.

Victoria Day
Sovereign's birthday

The Sovereign's birthday has been celebrated in Canada since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901).

May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845.

After Confederation, the Queen's birthday was celebrated every year on May 24 unless that date was a Sunday, in which case a proclamation was issued providing for the celebration on May 25.

After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, an Act was passed by the Parliament of Canada establishing a legal holiday on May 24 in each year (or May 25 if May 24 fell on a Sunday) under the name Victoria Day.

The birthday of King Edward VII, who was born on November 9, was by yearly proclamation during his reign (1901-1910) celebrated on Victoria Day.

It was not an innovation to celebrate the birthday of the reigning sovereign on the anniversary of the birth of a predecessor. In Great Britain, the birthdays of George IV (1820-1830) and William IV (1830-1837) were celebrated on June 4, birthday of George III (1760-1820).

The birthday of King George V, who reigned from 1910 to 1935, was celebrated on the actual date, June 3 or, when that was a Sunday, by proclamation on June 4.

The one birthday of King Edward VIII, who reigned in 1936, was also celebrated on the actual date, June 23.

King George VI's birthday, which fell on December 14, was officially celebrated in the United Kingdom on a Thursday early in June. Up to 1947 Canada proclaimed the same day but in 1948 and further years settled on the Monday of the week in which the United Kingdom celebration took place. George VI reigned from 1936 to 1952.

The first birthday of Queen Elizabeth II, in 1952, was also celebrated in June.

Meanwhile, Canada continued to observe Victoria Day. An amendment to the Statutes of Canada in 1952 established the celebration of Victoria Day on the Monday preceding May 25.

From 1953 to 1956, the Queen's birthday was celebrated in Canada on Victoria Day, by proclamation of the Governor General, with Her Majesty's approval. In 1957, Victoria Day was permanently appointed as the Queen's birthday in Canada. In the United Kingdom, the Queen's birthday is celebrated in June.

LOL!  I think about ten people have reminded me but thanks!  It is a church not a street.  They were nice enough to donate some of their land to make a bus station for the local people.

I'll have to take a picture and post it when I get off the bus.  At the church! ;)

Ok, well I knew there was a church involved somehow. Glad no one is letting you forget!

I have a ton of pictures I would like to share.  Since I have the new camera, I've been taking pictures of anything and everything.  It's not uncommon for me to snap at least a hundred of them at time.

Lord, I love digital photography!

Victoria Day.

May 24 was Empire Day in Australia and is now Comonwealth Day.  When I was child the day was a half day holiday and a bonfire day.

It is also DP Colin's birthday - He assumed everyone was lighting fires to celebrate in honour of himself.

As with the UK, Queens Birthday is celebrated here with a holiday in June.

By my calculations DR TCB should be flat out with the benefit of excellent theatre lighting for the performance at this moment.

Yes today is Victoria Day (for Queen Victoria).

3 day weekend.  No mail.  Although I think the stores were open. Although I did not leave my bed. I can't imagine that there would have been school, and I think most people had the day off.

I know this has been asked, but a search has turned up nothing in the way of an answer so far as I've been able to discover:

What's going on at Broadway.com with "The Insider" by Ken Mandelbaum" ?

There hasn't been anything new in weeks and weeks...and I've seen no word on what has happened.

Update from Tacoma General...

DR TCB's operation apparently finished up about 45 minutes ago, and he'll be "in recovery" for another 1-1/2 hours or so.  That's all the more info his sister had at the time she called me.  She'll talk to him later tonight (if he's up for it) and give me a further update tomorrow.  Basically sounds like so far, so good.

Monday greetings!  I had a delightful, but away-from-my-desk, workday today.  This morning I made an invited site visit to a nonprofit development office from which several staff members have attended my workshops in the past.  The gave me a tour of their facility (a retirement community), we had a consulting conference, and concluded with lunch in the dining room.  Got back to the library just in time for a 3-hour readers' advisory workshop in which I learned about many book suggestion websites.  Then I answered some emails and phone calls and came home to a family dinner.

Glad to get a good report regarding DR TCB's surgery.  Thanks, DR Jed!

Yes DR Laura, I was thinking of you when I said "I went for a walk today...."  Scary photos of Phx.  I don't remember any real dust storms when I lived there, just the brief dust before and during a monsoon, but nothing like the photos. I think you're right to stay put. There are a lot of multi-car pile ups when people can't see due to dust, or snow fro that matter.   Be safe

Dan - One use of show music that bothers me a little is the "All I want is a room somewhere" ad campaign for the Hampton motel chain.  I can't imagine Lerner would have been pleased with the lyric adaptation, and the "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" line just seems weird in that context.

MEDIUM was certainly a "whoa!" episode tonight.

David James Elliott is a very pretty man in and out of clothes.

I truly had no idea where the episode was going for most of its running time though the answer to the mystery was pretty easy to spot. However, this time, the murder investigation took a back seat to the investigation into Allison's "what-if" life. Fascinating.

Back from our second and last staged reading.  Act one didn't go quite as well as last night because the audience was a bit less vocal and it affected the energy.  But act two scored big with some really huge laughs, and once again, All About Men stopped the show cold.  I have to stop my craziness and understand that the majority of the folks in the cast are students, and not only that, students who had never done a musical before.  So, considering that, I was very proud of everyone.
