I saw Is He Dead? last night. It's lots of fun. It's the "new" Mark Twain play adapted by David Ives. The play is actually just OK and the adaptation doesn't make it much better but it's fun because Norbert Leo Butz is so good. The rest of the cast does well, including John McMartin who played the original me (spoo I mean Ben  ;)) in Follies. It's a standard comedy of the time and probably would not have been done had it not been written by Mark Twain. It's a slight story about an artist who pretends to be dead so his work will gain in popularity and price. The ruse works but then he has to figure out how to get out of the situation so he can get his life back. It got rave reviews when it opened soon after the strike ended. I don't know that I would rave about it but I certainly would say go and see it, just to see Butz.

Just to play devil's advocate here for a moment.....

What's the difference between talking on a hands free cell and talking to a passenger in the car on a distraction level?

BTW the no cells phones law has been on the books in New York for a couple of years now, in fact I believe our county  may have been the first in the country to pass such a law... I have not seen it enforced however and it  makes not a whit of difference

While at the theatre last night I felt old again. The two young women sitting next to me were discussing theatre. One was a college student from Texas who just moved to NYC a week ago for a two month internship at one of the big financial firms (can'tremember the name, another sign of old  :D). As I said, they were discussing what to see. The subject of Grease came up and I didn't cringe and twitch but I did listen and the woman from Texas asked about the history of Grease and her friend said that it was just a movie. It had never been a stage show before and this production was based on the movie. I was actually very nice after my friend uncurled my fingers from my arm rest. I explained that, indeed, Grease had begun as a Chicago stage musical, then moved Off-Broadway and then on to Broadway where it had held the title of Longest Running Broadway Musical for a short while. They were surprised to find out that there was life before the movie of Grease. We then talked about other shows and what she should see during her two months in New York.

As we left the theatre they said goodbye and said thanks for the recommendations and perhaps we would see each other at another show.

I went home and felt good for helping her but old for knowing about Grease  ;)

The computer saga continues. As I mentioned earlier in the week, we originally bought, from Gateway, the maker of our computer, a 500 gigabyte replacement hard drive for our old drive which died. It came quite fast but when it came we saw that it was the wrong drive. When we called Customer Service/Tech Support we found out that our system wouldn't recognize a 500 gig drive even if it was the correct one. We exchanged that one for a 250 gig drive. On Monday we sent the drive back to Gateway (at least that was for free). Yesterday I went to the Gateway site to check on possible delivery dates for our memory (we're upgrading that also) and the new hard drive. Well, the memory is supposed to arrive today but the Hard Drive had an estimated ship date of February 11. I thought that couldn't be right. We ordered it on Saturday the 12. Why would it take a month or more to SHIP? I came home and told Anthony. I said I would check the site again in a couple of days in case there was an error. I then got ready to go to the theatre. I came home and Ant said he had called Gateway after I left and it turns out yet another mistake happened. Ant spoke to a supervisor when he called and explained the situation. She said that we should not have been sold the 250 gig HD because Gateway doesn't make or sell them anymore. But they are still in the system and on their Web site!!! Anthony said no one had told us, either by e-mail or phone, that the HD didn't exist and that we've been without a computer for almost three weeks now. We need a hard drive and we shouldn't have to wait for a month only to be told we won't be getting the part. She agreed. She cancelled the order for the 250 gig HD (I can't believe it was still in their system being processed) and we are now expecting delivery of a 160 gig HD on Friday. She said they would send it out express delivery at no charge to us. I only hope it's the right drive. The good thing in all of this is that I am spending less and less to upgrade the hard drive. It went from $134.99 to $99 to $79 (for the 160 gig) but I know why Gateway has been in trouble for the past few years and why they were bought out by Acer last year. Gateway retains the name for their brand but they are owned and operated by Acer Computers now. A word of warning to you all. Avoid Gateway if you're looking to buy a new Windows-based PC!!!

I'm creating a new act for a bipolar cabaret performer.

I'm thinking of creating a medley by combining "Lucky to Be Me" [from On the Town ] with "It Sucks To Be Me" [from Avenue Q ].

Also, "Everybody Say's Don't" [from Anyone Can Whistle ] with "Yes" [from 70, Girls, 70 ].

Good morning, all.  I slept on the MBarnum Memorial Air Mattress last night. It wasn't awful, but I want my bed back!

Today, I have more laundry and a lot of vacuuming to see what of the bugs and other detritus I can rid the apartment.  I thought I'd continue this process for several days before making up the bed and seeing what happens when I sleep in it.  In the meantime, I should be hearing from the exterminators, although the 4th floor gossip on the B line is that the exterminators don't do a damned thing.

I've postponed today's meeting to sign the new will for a week, and I have lots of messy work here today, so I'll sign in later.

Argh, Rally, I feel your pain!

I used to live in some apartments built in the '40's. They had terrible roach problems because they didn't take care of the whole building. (They were little one story apartments, about 4 in a row, lots of them.) All it would take was one neighbor to bomb for roaches and then they would all escape to my apartment, then I would bomb and send them back. We should have all done it at the same time!

I have lived in houses ever since. At least if I have roaches or ants, they are MY roaches and ants!

Cell phones should be banned in a lot more places than cars. I am tired of sitting in restaurants listening to other people's conversations or standing in checkout lines between two people on their phones.  No matter how many announcements are made, I am sick of being at a play, concert or movie and hearing phones ring --- no not ring, make some weird nnoise or play some strange tune.  The whole world has turned into one big phonebooth and it's time to draw the line.  I do not have a cellphone.  I have a phone at home with an answering machine and a phone at work with voice mail.  I don't need to talk to people when I am someplace else.  Just because the technology exists, it doesn't mean it is needed.

You must use this song called "But Alive" - the ultimate bipolar song that doesn't need a medley to be bipolar. You might be able to twist a few people's arms to get a few parody verses.

I’m Late, I’m Late
for a very important date,
No time to say hello, goodbye,
I’m late, I’m late, I’m late
and when I wave,
I lose the time I save.
My fuzzy ears and whiskers
took me too much time to shave.
I run and then I hop, hop, hop,
I wish that I could fly.
There’s danger if I dare to stop
and here’s the reason why,
(you see) I’m overdue.
I’m in a rabbit stew,
Can’t even say goodbye, hello,
I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.
Good morning Mister Chatterbox
I’d love to stoop and chatter,
but in six and seven eighth minutes
I must meet with the mad hatter
the mad, mad, mad, mad Hatter.
We must chat about a very important matter.
I’m off to see the queen of hearts
who lives up in the palace,
and the very moment I’m through with her
I’ve got a date with Alice.
I can’t be late for Alice
or the queen of hearts who lives up in the palace.
I’m late.

Noel - Interesting post about HAIRSPRAY.  But at what point can one say that a show is considered by the general populace to be a quality show if awards and overwhelmingly positive reviews aren't a proper gauge of what's considered "good" in our society?  There will always be some people who don't like work that the critics and award-givers love, as they did HAIRSPRAY, won't there?  So where does it end?

It should be noted that the object in question is a "Cattle Gun", a perfectly legal farm implement, lawful to carry in plain sight.

We also have palmetto bugs, which are larger than roaches, and they can fly!

The only insect problem I have around my house are palmetto bugs. Nothing seems to wipe them out during the summer. I haven't seen one in months (maybe all our dry weather and my bug spray did them in for this year), but they are usually a year-round phenomenon.

Very cold here this morning (below 20!), but it's warming into the 40s today (supposedly). Tomorrow the forecasters are saying we're in for a winter mix of ice, snow, and sleet with temps not climbing out of the low 30s. Brrrrr!

Once again, the contents of the mail will determine how I spend my afternoon. I'll watch last night's SVU as I prepare and eat lunch. Then, if the Criterion discs arrive, it'll be THIS SPORTING LIFE which is 2 hours, 15 minutes long and will take most of the rest of the afternoon. If the Criterions don't arrive, then it'll be back to Hawaii with Steve McGarrett and "Danno" Williams.

Final 'Harry Potter' May Be Split in Half

(Jan. 14) - The final installment of the "Harry Potter" series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," may be made as a two-part film, the U.K. newspaper The Daily Mail is reporting.

The Mail claims that the crew currently filming the sixth movie, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," has been told the seventh book will be released in two halves, rather than squeezing the events of the 776-page tome into one long film.

The Daily Mail also reports that Warner Bros. is rumored to be shooting for the Oscars with "Deathy Hallows," potentially courting a big name director such as Steven Spielberg to helm the two-part finale.

SPIDER-MAN SPLITS WITH MARY JANE, WIFE OF 20 YEARS

LOS ANGELES —  It was bad enough when Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year-old all-American girl, announced she was pregnant.

But Spider-Man splitting with Mary Jane, his wife of more than 20 years? We didn't see that one coming.

Which is exactly the point, says Joe Quesada, editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics. It was time to shake things up in the life of Peter Parker, the nerdy New Yorker who upon being bitten by a radioactive spider attained the ability to transform himself into a web-spinning world savior. And it was easier to do that, he said, if Parker wasn't married.

Still, as the writer and artist who created the story that transformed Spider-Man into Single-Man earlier this month, Quesada has made himself about as popular with some of his readers as the villainous Green Goblin.

SPOILER POSSIBILITIES for No Country for Old Men:

I agree with bk on No Country for Old Men. I usually like the Cohen bros stuff -- Raising Arizona is one of my favs -- but I was disappointed with this one.  It started out strong but went no where (I know, I know it's probably supposed to be symbolic of violence -- violence is senseless, hence the movie makes no sense or something like that...yada, yada, yada...)  I thought Josh Brolin was the best thing about it -- he wasn't much on my radar when he was younger, but seeing him in American Gangster and this one, I'm pretty impressed and look forward to seeing him in more stuff.  I like Tommy Lee as an actor but came to wonder what the point of his character was in this movie other than being symbolic of the old guy shaking his head about what the world has come to -- at the beginning I thought he was going to track down the killer and have a show down, but about all he did was try to track down Brolin's character (and not very well) and go visit some relative for some inane talk and end the movie with some inane dream ... my mind started wandering during the relative talk (I was thinking "oh, that's Barry Corbin, he's such a good character actor, etc.," hence pulling myself out of the movie during that scene and during the dream speech I was thinking "what the ... what does this have to do with the price of tea in China?" so missed the insight/point of those two scenes cause I let my mind wonder ... it might have worked a little better had it ended at the final hotel scene when Tommy sits down on the bed -- The End -- sad and pointless -- but no, it had to go on and make some more points about it all being senseles so it stopped being about senselessness and turned into being about being annoying at the end.

(Oh, and bk is right -- the killer killed a cop/sheriff, so law enforcement would have been, in good ol' Texanese,  all over that guy like a duck on a June bug -- yet no one goes after him other than Woody's character -- and the who, what, when, where, why and how wasn't completely clear with his character either....)

If senseless was the point of the movie, then by golly it is masterpiece...

I'm not sure how your questions relate to my post, answering BK's Topic Question about botched films of stage musicals.

Are awards a gauge of what's considered "good" in our society?  In a word, no.  Hairspray won a large number of Tonys, beating out a handful of other eligible shows, some of which had already closed.

If we're talking about what the general populace likes, well, there's no ballot box.  You have to listen.  What shows are people excited about, and talking about?  Nowadays, it seems to be August: Osage County.  People who've seen it really love it.

The critics have their opinions, and sometimes they're fairly unanimous (Hairspray: good; The Little Mermaid: bad).  What troubles me is that they rarely focus on the quality of the writing itself.  One can be so tickled by the comic performance of a larger-than-life star (Harvey Fierstein, say) that they ignore poor craft in music and lyrics.

We've seen countless examples of critics loving a show and the public never takes to it; or shows the critics loathed running forever.

I'm an individual, giving one man's opinion, and admit that I'm particularly obsessed by songwriting craft.  While Shaiman can conjure up a snappy rhythm, the other aspects of Hairspray's songs amount to treading water in a sense: They don't swim forward, make interesting points, or lead the ear in pleasing directions.  You want those qualities, listen to Amour or A Year With Frog and Toad, 2 scores that lost the Tony, that year, to one of the cast albums that I can't bear to play, Hairspray.

CLOVERFIELD (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,323106,00.html)

Quote
The clever aspect of Reeves’ film is that it’s all shot with a handheld camera that’s supposed to be the camcorder belonging to one of the main characters. This gives the film an intimate feel, and the look is very personal as the city is devoured by an identified creature from the black lagoon.

"Cloverfield" boasts a small but plucky cast of young unknowns, and they’re not bad, although none of them really breaks out. Lizzy Caplan as Marlena, who is bitten by the monster, does the most with the least in the Ally Sheedy role from "Breakfast Club." The others — Michael Stahl-David, T.J. Miller, Jessica Lucas and Odette Yustman — must bear the brunt of the script’s lack of humor or wit or any subplot. Give them points for that.

Sounds like a film bk can award ¼ stars out of 10!

Noel - I was thinking about the part of your post yesterday where you wrote, about the HAIRSPRAY material itself:

"What remains are the convoluted story, which switches racial prejudice for anti-fat prejudice as if they're on an equal plain, and those songs, which are frequently witless, pointless, or just uninventive."

I think, ultimately, we need to add "local theatre" longevity to the "success" equation - I suspect "A Year With Frog and Toad" will be playing somewhere in the USA long after "Hairspray" is a faint memory.

Noel - i agree that the attention to craft in A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD and AMOUR (two shows that i very very very much enjoyed) is better than the attention to craft in HAIRSPRAY.  But theater may have moved on from craft above all else - as we're seeing with the near-unanimity of the critical reaction to a show like SPRING AWAKENING.  This is not you by any means, but there have always been those who hold on to the standards of an old craft and resist a new craft standard that comes along - modern poetry (rhymes vs. non-rhymes and changing rules for scanning) is an example as well.  And of course let's not forget invention, honesty, appropriateness of tone to the story, raising of spirits and pure joy.

Then maybe this is one of those cases where it works best as a book and does not translate well in the limitations of film .. I'm just saying ....hey, plenty of critics and viewers have loved it so one man's (or woman's) head scratching is another man's cinematic and literary masterpiece ...

...ahh, and their faithful rendering explains why there wasn't the Cohen trademark black humor that appears at the core of so many of their films ...

Mr. Bruce, I whole heartily agree with your rant. Restaurant cell-phoners should go away too, but they're not as dangerous as the driving ones.

On a happy note, the lead from materials management at Kaiser called me back & wants to meet me tomorrow! Unfortunately, all my nice pants are at the tailor getting hemmed, so I'm wearing a skirt, which I'm not used to. I hope I remain comfortable & composed!

Went to the Happiest Place On Earth yesterday with my aunt. Going there on a weekday is definitely a wise choice, if it can be done. Practically no lines! Now that's happy.

Who was on the panel you saw when you attended "Jukebox Jury"?

You'd think with my memory for details in my childhood, that I'd remember, but I think I was overwhelmed being in an actual TV studio like NBC - I do have vivid memories of Peter Potter from that evening.

"indent hyperlink"? - Was that just for me, DR DerBrucer? ;)

Otherwise...

Some URLs you can just put right into the post, and the "board" will magically make it a hyperlink.  But, as DR SingingNymph surmised, if the link is too long, no "magic" will occur.

For Example:

http://www.playbill.com

As opposed to:

http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showEvent&event=TITSL

Where you would have to "manually" use the URL tool to make it work:

http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showEvent&event=TITSL (http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showEvent&event=TITSL)

Or if you prefer text with your hyperlinks:

Barbara Cook's Spotlight: Alice Ripley & Emily Skinner (http://www.kennedy-center.org/calendar/index.cfm?fuseaction=showEvent&event=TITSL)

*Just hit "Reply" to see the formatting codes.

Yep, DR Jose there were a lot of commercials. It seemed like here they were on every 10 minutes. Very annoying.

As for who i liked, there were a few.

I don't know any of their names but I liked:

1. the black girl with the sick daughter. I just loved her personality. But wow that story really got to me! :(

2. the blonde girl that sang last (the one who doesn't watch R rated movies and is a nanny). I also just got a good vibe from her.

3. the blonde girl from the log cabin/the cage fighter, horse trainer.

I think it depends on the driver & follows the theory you should keep your eyes on the road, not a the people in the car you are speaking to.  If I'm hands free I'm no more distracted than with another driver in the car, and I often stop the conversation when the situation calls for it.  Most people I know do the same thing.

DR Jose, re: the bad singers on IDOL.

I don't really like to watch them. Although i'm glad theya re showing less of the bad ones this year.

The only time i enjoy it (seeing the bad ones) is when they show a bunch of them singing the same song.

Because then we don't have to sit through the backstory, the swearing after they are rejected. And they are not embarrased in the same way. Plus i actually find it entertaining this way.

The princess leah one and the girl who lived in the studio with her mom (who went ballistic after she was rejected) were pretty awful.

Well.. Some of them are, unfortunately.  However, some of them are also "influenced" by the production team over the course of the hours - and sometimes day(!) - of their audition process.  They keep going from room to room being told that they're going to get to sing for The Judges, and that they will most likely end up on TV, so...  :-\

There can't be a happy ending for fish out of water and it's a reality ofo existence that everyne but the Disney machine sems to have overlooked.  Not all fairy tales have happy endings, not all abducted children are found alive and unviolated, praying to Go and the angels will not always save you, and ugly unimaginative stagings and design for Eurotrash operas or musicals  are the work of the devil.

Thank you!  I just dragged the URL from the VILLAGE VOICE post and it wouldn't work.  I've failed at this before.

The exterminator called: Saturday morning.  I didn't tell him I heard he was worthless.  Tomorow morning I shall pick up this anti-bedbug cocktail recommended by NEW YORK magazine: Steri-Fab, it's only $45/gallon and I need to buy a continuous action spray as well.  Oy!

So far today, I've purchased a new vacuum cleaner, since my tiny dust buster isn't doing well enough, and mattress cover to contain and seal off the mattress.  I won't consider buying a new mattress until I know the varmints are under control.

I've also pulled out the rug and junked it, and done another load of laundry and more things are encased in plastic bags.  Tomorrow I'll wash more items, including the sheets from the bed that I should have put into plastic bags yesterday.  I'm thinking about spraying the entire bed frame tonight and sleeping on the MBarnum memorial air mattress at Toyland.

This apartment hasn't been in such chaos since the bookcases collapsed in August 2004.

There's this commercial for digital cable airing with a lot of mermaids and a rap artist (I use the term artist hesitantly) calling, in rhythm to what sounds like an accordion calypso  eight-seven-seven, three-nine-three-ee, fo-uh fo-uh fo-uh, eight. They air this commercial on CBS??? all afternoon.  The people who wrote that commercial and aired it should have bedbugs in perpetuity.

Noel - If you consider curtainup.com a pan, your list requires further analysis.

And I don't see the rave from Roma Torre on NY1, which reaches more targeted theatergoers than most of your list.

And USA Today clearly comes down on the side of recommending the show, despite its star rating.

And David Finkle at Theatremania, while negative for the show, found several of the brand new songs "enthralling" - so there are gradations in the pans.

There were certainly gradations in the pans.  I intended to include NY1 and it slipped my mind.  Let's shift Curtain Up to the Mixed column.  So, after FJL demanded a recount" the results are:
Pans - 20
Mixed - 2
Positive - 3

I'm reminded of my Little League "career."  I tearfully told some adult we'd been clobbered 21-3 and, in that "there, there" way, was told that it really wasn't so bad: the actual score was 20-3.

The Little Mermaid kills herself in the Hans Christian Anderson story. Doesn't she?

My memory is that she becomes sea foam, since she cannot go back to her world nor remain on earth.  Dvorak's great opera RUSALKA with its glorious "Song to the Moon" is the same story, and Giraudoux' play ONDINE, which starred Audrey Hepburn, is based on the version UNDINE by  Friedrich Heinrich Karl La Motte Fouqué, which needs a new edition.  In Giraudoux' play, she returns to the fold, as I recall.  My memory is that her last scene is with the Old Man of the Sea - the deal is she will forget everything on earth if Hans is unfaithful to her. i've always wanted to read UNDINE, but English versions have been out of print for years.

Noel - Is this the new math?  (You didn't add NY1 to the list of positives. :) )

When a critic recommends a show, as did USA Today, that would qualify as "positive," though not a rave, wouldn't it?

I haven't read all the reviews you cite, so I'll have to trust you for now on the lengthy list you have of pans.  though i wonder since you initially read curtainup as a pan.

But this is not a winner-take-all sports game.  There is nothing "fairly unanimous" about the negative pronouncement on LITTLE MERMAID, which is what I took issue with in your post a few pages back.  reasonable critical minds can come to teh conclusion that it's a good show.

The Criterions did not arrive today, but Paramount was certainly on the ball: four more review copies from them including two TV box sets (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST-Season 3 and SOUL FOOD), a Comedy Central comedy special, and a PBS miniseries called THE JEWISH AMERICANS that runs four hours. These all come out the first week of February.

So, I went back to the world of Steve McGarrett with 3 1/2 more episodes. The last episode I only got about 15 minutes into is guest starring Hume Cronyn as a gentleman thief in a rare comic outing for the show.

Among the other episodes I watched was a BIG surprise. The female guest star in the hour looked VERY familiar and it took me most of the show to place her, but I finally did before the credits:

Marianne McAndrew (Irene Malloy from the film of HELLO, DOLLY!)! This is the only other thing I've ever seen her in besides HELLO, DOLLY. She played a girl on the lamb from the mob and had taken up with a guy who just turned out to be the #1 hit man for the mob! He was played by Don Stroud.

The prince marries a princess, and the sea witch tells the little mermaid she has to kill him (with a knife that her sisters obtained from the sea witch in exchange for their hair) in order to become a mermaid again. She cannot kill him, and throws herself into the sea and turns into sea foam.

:)

I make my own CD compilations and these are the sorts of things I do with them.  Thanks for the idea! ;)

... and then the Old Man in the Sea tells some inane dream -- The End

.. Didn't Cormac McCarthy write this story and the Cohen Brothers make a movie out of it called "No Sea for Old Mermaids" ?

I've read the New York Sun.  It is a pan.

I've read Curtain Up.  It is a pan.  I'm not sure I know how to do a link, but here's a try:

http://www.curtainup.com/littlemermaid.html (http://www.curtainup.com/littlemermaid.html)

Matthew Murray is the theatre critic for Talking Broadway.  They've also a Siegel column, referring to the critical "clambake."

FJL, I've lost sight over whether we're disagreeing about the term "pan" or the word "unanimous" here.  And it's all striking me as downright silly.

In the theatre, of course a "pan" is a write-up that will serve to discourage readers from buying tickets

The Little Mermaid, alas, got twenty pans that I could count, including all of New York's newspapers: Times, Post, Daily News, Newsday and the Sun.  You've found four or five positive reviews, but, compared that to that "clambake," that score of scorn, we have what people generally refer to as unanimity of opinion.  Yes, the technical definition of unanimity would only apply to a 27-0 lambasting.  But I can't imagine you really wanted to debate the definitions of "pan" and "unanimous."

I'm honestly looking forward to reading whatever point you really want to make here.

I am in agreement also. It also annoys me when they come to the desk at the library and expect to be served while they are yakking away. I find that terribly rude. I also see it when I am shopping and there is a line at the checkout line.

I cringed when I read that Gateway was bought by ACER. I have had very bad experiences with their product and the word I have for it not even nice.

I have actually seen college professors throw students out of a classroom because of student's cell phone and I dont blame them.

And there's also Once On This Island where she's turned into a tree.

Good Evening!

So... I got a call from a friend of mine earlier today.  He happened to be in need of some music for one of his students coming in this afternoon.  And he also asked if I might be interested in coming and playing for the lesson too.  And it turned out his student was Matthew Morrison of Light in the Piazza and Hairspray fame, as well as the upcoming revival of South Pacific.  And he was very kind, and allowed my friend to snap the following pic for my roommate who's currently working overseas - and is a great big fan of Matt's.  :)

After the voice lesson, I headed on down to Chelsea to see about getting my haircut since I had about two hours before my next appointment.  Well, when I stepped into the barber shop, there were about five other people in front of me - including a mother who had brought her three sons in to be coiffed.  Hmm...

So, I decided to just head back out, and up 9th Ave. to get a bite to eat before the short audition session I had to play this afternoon.  -Who knew that the Newboys' choreography in Gypsy was truly harder than it looks?

After playing for the Newsboys, I met up with my friend, Carl, who's in town for a few days to see some shows.  He lives in Toronto, but due to the weird airfares right now, he ended driving across the border to fly out of Buffalo Niagara International Airport in order to save about $800(!) on the flight.  In any case, we had a nice catch up session over some sushi before he headed over to The Palace to see Legally Blonde.

Just returned from seeing Ann Hampton Callaway. This was the first time I had he opportunity to see her perform live. What a treat! What performer. I have see many many performers and she is one of the best. If you have a chance to see her live. GO!!!!

I got to meet her afterwards and see signed my many cds of mine. Commenting that I had the original pressings of some of them. She wanted a hug from me and boy is she tall!!!

Sitting next to me was music director for many HHW performers (Liz Callaway, Jason Graae etc) Alex Rybeck and Avery Summers who played Jewel on the Ann Margret version of The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas where she played Jewel. Avery is a Florida resident. With them was Mark Heller who produces the Cabaret series here in Florida and elsewhere.

And in one episode, McGarrett and a group of deputies get on horseback and ride the ridges looking for an old man fleeing from them. Among the deputies (and not even getting billing) was Patrick Duffy.

LAW & ORDER had a great, labyrinthan case tonight that began with a missing pair of pants at a dry cleaners and ended up with murder and a huge cover-up concerning poison toothpaste. A great episode.

Since the show premiered with its new cast members a few weeks ago, every episode has been a winner, and I just love the show all over again.

Tomorrow, I should find some time to get to RENO 911! and (maybe) PROJECT RUNWAY.

I've decided that since I'm so far along with HAWAII FIVE-O now, there's no reason now not to simply finish it over the next day or two. Then, I'll spend all weekend with the Criterion discs.

Bruce, you had to mention people who look at you when they are driving-I really hate that!  Even worse is when they look at you and you are in the back seat-scary!

Shortly after we were married Vixdad's parents visited from their native England to spend Christmas with us,(several years before they emigrated to Canada)  They were in the back seat and we were driving them around to show them all the lit up houses.

Vixdad was keeping up a running commentary of the houses but his parents seemed  to be be having difficulty hearing what he was saying to them as they kept reply in monosyllables; so Vixdad kept turning more and more in his seat to look at them, practically hanging over the seat,  thinking they couldn't hear him properly...

Finally his Mum shouted at him  " For God's sake watch the road!!!"

He laughed and pointed at me and said  "SHE'S driving!"

As for cellphones...

I LOVE(!!!!) it when I go to a place of business, and I happen to catch a clerk not[/b] help someone out when they get to the counter.  Then after an exchange of dirty looks and puzzling glances, the clerk "gently" points to the "Use of Cell Phones At The Window Is Prohibited".  :)

That sign now appears in almost all Broadway theatre box offices, and I've seen it enforced a couple of times.

Noel - we find what we want to find.  If you consider the New York Sun and curtainup.com and the Siegels' review (and theirs is just as much a review from Talkin' Broadway as Matthew Murray's) as discouraging people from seeing LITTLE MERMAID, then you are finding what you want to find.

I've made my agenda clear on trying to be supportive of the show.  You made a blanket statement that the critics were "fairly unanimous" that MERMAID was "bad."

Here's a post of mine from All That Chat, making clear my biases regarding this show, which I've also detailed here on HHW:

"I've conceded a desire to see this show succeed, between enjoying the show, an appreciation and a Workshop connection to some of the creative people, and my other half having at one point worked for Disney and still happily getting checks from that work.

I still haven't done a comprehensive read-through of all the reviews, but doing a search of ATC, of the fifteen or so I've read (including a few I've linked), the Associated Press (Michael Kuchwara), New York 1 (Roma Torre), Wall Street Journal (Terry Teachout) are as good as the Philadelphia Inquirer review you [referring to Bob Rendell] linked last week in terms of highly recommending the show, and those three reviews are in a strong target market for theatergoers in NYC and on tour.

I also see in googling that USA Today gave it a very respectful analysis and overall really recommended it (though not a rave like the above critics, it would sell tickets to a very wide readership). And of the internet reviewers on major sites, Theatermania liked the songwriting calling several of the new songs "enthralling" even though negative on the show, and curtainup.com was very respectful and favorable despite their disappointment with certain elements.

Several of the raves and recommendations are either widely-read (AP, USA Today) or read/heard by a great target audience for theatergoers (the theatre-oriented NY1 Onstage, and the business-oriented Wall Street Journal readership). Obviously, they surely would have loved to have had a recommendation from the NY Times, but is the Times review any more discouraging than Brantley's review of shows like Wicked (the show, not the star) or Legally Blonde?"

Back from the DGA and Michael Clayton.  I've now seen the majority of the DGA nominated films - Michael Clayton is the only one that got applause from the DGA crowd at the end.  Make of that what you will.

I got a nice e-mail from William Richert, the director of Winter Kills.  I'd visited his website and purchased his redo of his Jimmy Reardon film, which was mangled by Fox (scenes cut, interference all the way, Elmer Bernstein score replaced by songs and Bill Conti) - his version has narration back in, scenes back in  and Bernstein back in.  I wrote him an e-mail just telling him we'd had similar experiences in terms of studios trying to kill films and he sent me a very nice response.
