Post by: bk on December 28, 2010, 12:12:25 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes counted down, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently counting down and down for the count and also the duke and the earl.

Good morning, all! I got an email at 6:30 this morning, telling me the McGlinnventory is shut down for the day. Our paralegal Geri cannot get dug out to make the trek from Connecticut, so I hasve no morning plans. I've got work I can do here on the Herbert recordings, so I'll work here until around 10:30 or so and head down to Toyland.

I have little else to report this morning. I enjoyed the finish of THE CLOSER's two-parter last night, and I really had no idea where it was going.  I was still waiting for something shocking in the last 3 minutes.

BK,

I haven't seen DRESSED TO KILL for a few years, but I do recall (despite its problems and obvious homage to PSYCHO) liking it better than you did.

The first time I saw it (in a theater), the final twist did take me by surprise.

Last night I watched COLOSSUS THE FORBIN PROJECT for the first time in many years.  I still like it....although the computer technology is wildly out of date.....

And once again, at the end - I was convinced that Colossus the computer had fallen in love with Dr Forbin.

TOD:

LOST
THE AMAZIN' RACE

I did follow THE EVENT.  Yes, it was a LOST clone, but unlike last year's LOST clone FLASH FORWARD, it did not try to replicate LOST's emotionality and instead focused on slam-bang storytelling.  I was hooked for the most part, but then it began to lose me in the later episodes.  I doubt that I'll go back to it when it returns from hiatus.

It's been only two full days since Christmas Day and, in spite of yesterday's snow digging, I'm feeling fat and lazy and need to get out of the house.  I'm going to head out to Best Buy to return a few items and then spend the rest of the time jsut driving around where ever my fancy takes me.  Maybe I'll go see TANGLED.

Tuesday morning greetings!  We had a lovely time entertaining my mother, our niece/goddaughter, her mother and boyfriend yesterday.  I was pretty exhausted when Richard and I got back from taking my mother home, so I just crashed.  Today, I'm going to the optician for my corrected lenses, to the library, and to Border's and Barnes & Noble in search of half-price gift wrapping materials.  And I'll drive my OWN car, as Rob is now back from Michigan.

Oh my gosh it was COLD this morning!  I had a early morning Doctor appointment and people in the waiting room said they saw 21 degrees at their houses!

By the weekend we are going to be in the 70's.

And you wonder why people get sick.  There is some type of flu going around (not why I was at the doctor) and many of the people there were pretty sick.   They had masks at the front desk and asked that you wear one if you were sick.  I hope I didn't catch anything.

The doctor said that I looked the most relaxed he's seen me in months.  I guess all the sleeping I did the first few days did me some good.  My BP was the lowest it's been in quite awhile but I do still have some other work to do.

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!

I'm up, I'm up... And my parents' main computer started doing something last night, well it started doing nothing last night. Alas, the "nothing" also affected their internet and wireless set up. We think. ??? Comcast is looking into it, and my brother is also checking into it to see if there's some sort of virus on the system. Thankfully, the quick fix seems to be shutting down the computer and starting back up again. Alas, that has to be done every 30 minutes or so. 'Tis a puzzlement.

Um. Not I.

Nor I.  Our movie-going has reduced dramatically, especially since we had such a bad experience at the local dump when we tried to see SOCIAL NETWORK.  We're going to try to keep up New Year's Eve tradition by going to see TRUE GRIT, but not here in town.

FYI:

I think the only films I saw this year were Iron Man II and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows.   Iron Man was great, Harry Potter was great, too.  In fact, if it's still out there next week, I may take the DP to see it, although I read somewhere that it was going away soon.

2. Michael S
I saw some films but not sure if I would put them o a list

Harry Potter ( though it was better than the last film)
The Sound of Music (HD Presentation)
a gay comedy about bears ( Heavy set men and not the animals) where the best line was a throw away and an good example of fine comedy writing. The rest of the film waas a mish mash and unfocused.
There were a couple of others but cannot recall what they were and if the were a best.

3. Druxy
TOD:

Since I've come to the point in my life where I seldom, if ever, go to a theater any more and wait for a movie to come out on DVD, there are a lot of 2010 movies that I've yet to see.

However, of those I have seen, the ones I enjoyed the most are (in no particular order):

THE TOWN
CITY ISLAND
THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
TOY STORY 3
THE GHOST WRITER
GREEN ZONE
LEAVES OF GRASS
HARRY BROWN

4. Danise
Thank you DR Jennifer (Gee I've even forgotten the DR part)!   I will be here this week at least.  I can't promise what will happen when I get back to the grind.

The movies I've seen this year make me glad I didn't go out and pay the money to go to the theater to see them.  I didn't think I missed seeing one of them on a big screen.

5. Kerry
I don't think I saw any new movies this year.   I'm not sure.

6. Vixmom
I think the only movies I saw in the theatre this year were
Twilight
Tangled
Avatar
Toy Story 3D

7. MBarnum
Gosh, I didn't get to the movies very much this year which means I am going to be at a great disadvantage when Oscar times rolls around (I like it best if I have seen a majority of the films up for awards).

Looks like the only 2010 films that I even watched this year all came from India, and here are my top picks.

I stopped after finding 7 people who'd read the notes and answered the TOD.  Perhaps if you read the daily discussions more thoroughly?

Not nearly as many lists as we usually get, but touche.  However, "Vincent" you'll want to stop right there.  Really.  Or you'll have to register and come up with yet another screen name.

I forgot about "The Big Bang Theory."  That should be on my list, too.  And "How I Met Your Mother."  Oh...and "Mike and Molly," also.

"Not nearly as many lists as we usually get."

Oh, please. There were 7 lists - at least - and you didn't even know that, because you clearly never read these boards, except on those occasions when you've asked some kind of computer question, or posted some kind of post for which you expect to be praised - and if you aren't praised.... look out!

But you are incapable of admitting you were wrong about something (you're "touche" not withstanding)  so you come up with a weak-ass excuse that you actually think people here will believe. Well, perhaps they will.

As for yesterday, perhaps everyone was too busy happilly wishing Julie happy birthday or talking to Danise?

I read all the posts.  Sometimes I forget what I read because my day is filled with many things.  But here's what I never forget: How pathological your obsession with me seems to be.  I wonder what kind of personality it takes to come back to this site and register heaven-knows how many times to always end up at the same place - because this woman has some sort of "thing" about me and can't just let it go.  A normal person would just say "the guy's a jerk" and never bother coming back here.  Oh, were you sticking up for our posters here, because I did what I've been doing from the start on this board - making a JOKE about the notes and lack of lists or posts - I have done that as what I call a "runner" for years.  No one takes any of it seriously but you, Saint 3D Diffusion.  So, here for your edification and just to annoy you further during this HOLIDAY SEASON:

Get me off this damn page.

This will NOT do.

Page four???  Where in tarnation IS everyone?

Does anyone read the notes?

CRANBERRIES.

Post deleted.

But, most importantly:

3D Diffusion aka too many names to remember - banned.

I wouldn't have a problem with you thinking I'm a jerk and staying away and I'm sure you'd feel MUCH better rather than sitting wherever you're sitting and festering this negativity and hatred, which cannot be good for your karma or your soul.

And just so everyone knows: I'd suspected about "Vincent" several weeks ago (based on a post made), and even wrote a dear reader about it.  So, I've just kept my eye on the situation.  But three weeks ago there was no more suspicion - I don't know how she was logging on as "Vincent" but several attempts to log on under that name triggered a ban alert to me because of the IP address (there are several board ban triggers) - and the trigger was for one of 3D Diffusion's many usernames here - at that point there was no doubt at all it was her.  I could have done the ban right then and there, but I wanted to see how long it would take for the dear girl to show her colors.  Longer than I thought, actually.

I don't even remember a DR Thom Moore!

So, I went back and looked at his posts, and I did remember him: hip surgery replacement in September. Poor man, I wonder if he had a cancer or some bone disease that had required the various surgeries. He was only 68.

Here is Thom's last post here - from September:

thanks BK for mentioning the CD before Monday, since today will probably be my last day to sign on for who knows how long. I have to be at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan tomorrow at 9:30 AM EDT. My right hip revision surgery should begin approximately two hours after arrival. As with my previous three hip replacements, my pain should be gone immediately following my operation.

I have no idea how long I will be in the hospital and subsequent rehabilitation therapy. Forgive me if I do not send or reply to emails over the next several weeks (since I do not know if I will have Wi-Fi access). I look forward to returning to this list very soon in the near future. - Cheers

Here's from an obit:

Thomas “Thom” J. Moore III, age 68 of Troy, died November 7, 2010, of complications following surgery. Thom is survived by his devoted life partner of 40 years, Dwight Rinke. He is also survived by his loving family, Elsie Rinke, Dawn Hamlin and Donna Rinke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Marjorie.

Thom was born in Detroit where he spent his early childhood. He and his parents soon moved to Lincoln Park where he graduated from Lincoln Park High School in 1960. Following graduation he attended Wayne State University which was to become a central force in his life. A member of Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity, he distinguished himself early on at the university, being awarded the prestigious Donnelly Award given to the “Outstanding Graduate” of the class of 1964. He was also inducted into the equally distinguished David Mackenzie Honor Society whose annual reunions and inductions he supported and attended for many years. He earned his first degree in accounting followed immediately by an M.B.A. in administrative systems in 1967.

He began and ended his professional career with General Motors, having worked in the interim years for a number of Detroit’s best-known companies and institutions. He retired from E.D.S. in 2004 where he was certified as a PMP (Project Management Professional) and was recognized internationally as an award-winning and published author in data systems project management. Thom’s PMP status provided him the opportunity to travel the country from coast to coast and to spend time consulting in countries around the globe. He especially enjoyed the extended time he spent in Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Germany, Belgium and the UK. In his own words, “Traveling as I have, has given me the opportunity to appreciate how others live and think, and has broadened my own appreciation of other’s viewpoints.” After several months of retirement, he returned to G.M. as a consultant where he worked until the time of his death.

The Wayne State community and the Cultural Center were central to his dedication. A long-time member and supporter of the Detroit Institute of Arts, he especially appreciated the lectures and seminars of the Visiting Committee for European Sculpture and Decorative Arts and the Friends of Modern Art.

One of his favorite events of the year was the annual President’s Preview of the Hilberry Theatre at Wayne State University, the only resident, repertory graduate theatre company in the United States. He was a supporter of The Understudies for four decades and always appreciated the talent, energy and extraordinary quality of the theatre’s productions.

As much as Thom loved the D.I.A. and Hilberry Theatre, he had an enduring passion for music and comic books. His apartment is filled with shelves and boxes filled with music CDs, most of which are sound track recordings, although he loved jazz and rock, too. Upon hearing of Thom’s death a dear friend from London wrote to be sure to mention John Barry because that was the last thing she talked with him about on the telephone. Thom also had a special spot in his heart for Barry’s “Somewhere in Time” soundtrack. Another long-time friend from Colorado wrote, “John Barry's music will forever bring a tear to my eyes.” His other favorite composers are too numerous to mention, although his huge collection is probably one of the most encyclopedic in the country because it includes rare editions only available from international sources.

Some people may be surprised to learn that he was also a classic comic books collector. Limited editions reprinted from the historic, original issues of the great age of comics from the 1930s to the 1970s overflow in rooms filled with the books he so much enjoyed.

The resort town of Saugatuck, Michigan, was Thom’s favorite place to vacation. He and Dwight spent hours in the various galleries getting to know artists and dealers some of whom became lasting and dear friends. Many of the works purchased there became part of the foundation of his and Dwight’s art collection. While Thom enjoyed Saugatuck’s restaurants, he loved finishing dinner early enough to rush to the beautiful Oval Beach state park sand dunes to watch sunsets as they sparkled pink and blue and silver with fading orange suns, like Monet paintings, over the lapping waves and hushing vastness of Lake Michigan.

Thom donated his corneas to The Gift of Sight and his body was cremated.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date.

I did make it out of the house this afternoon.  First stopped at the post office to drop off a few mailings.  Then to Best Buy, where I stood in line for almost 25 minutes to make a simple return.  I had planned to shop around for myself but after all that, I couldn't wait to get out of there.  Next, I took to the Moorestown Mall, where I got a new pair of shoes and some half-price calenders.  Last stop was picking up a tall hazelnut coffee at the Wawa.

No TANGLED today.  Maybe TANGLED tomorrow.

So sorry to hear about that. I was wondering the other day how he was doing.

Good Evening!

Well...

When I left the house earlier, I was feeling a little queasy, but I thought that was just because I needed to eat something.

Well...

I joined Steve for lunch, ate said lunch, and then I tagged along with him for a while he ran some errands. As we were leaving Sam's Club, I started to feel not-so-well.

Well...

Steve drove me back to his place, and after drinking some tea and taking some Advil, I took a nap on his couch while he edited music files.  And then I headed back to my parents' house.

I'm feeling a bit better, but I'm considering taking the morning bus instead of the overnight bus back to NYC.

Stay tuned...

Has anyone heard of this singer called Rumer?  Alex Rybeck told me about her - I just ordered a CD of hers.  She recorded a brand new Bacharach song (with lyrics by Steven Sater) that's quite nice, called Some Lovers.  She really sounds like she's channelling Karen Carpenter - she's quite good so check her out.  Sound clips on amazon and I think you can hear the Bacharach song in its entirety on You Tube.
Sounds good. Nice to hear someone's channeling Karen Carpenter. I always loved her alto.

This afternoon, I watched one of those films from this year's National Registry: "McCabe and Mrs. Miller." I think that one gets better every time I watch it. It might have helped this time watching it with friends, both people who had and had not seen the film before. There was laughter through most and a few held breaths during the suspense scenes. This is probably my favorite western. And Julie Christie is luminous, even without all the ambient, amber lighting that seems to frame her like an angel.

So...

I'm trying to figure out how "responsible" - if that's the right word - The New York Times and other news outlets are being in reporting the departure of Natalie Mendoza from Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark?  The headlines read as "official", but then the first paragraph says that the news was reported by two people from the production "who spoke on condition of anonymity".

???

I don't even remember a DR Thom Moore!

So, I went back and looked at his posts, and I did remember him: hip surgery replacement in September. Poor man, I wonder if he had a cancer or some bone disease that had required the various surgeries. He was only 68.

As for the Topic of the Day...

"Lost"
"Modern Family"
"Glee"
"Mad Men"
"How I Met Your Mother"
"30 Rock"

"Top Chef: DC"
"Top Chef: Just Desserts"
"Top Chef: All-Stars"
"The Real Housewives of New Jersey" - Specifically the final three episodes and the reunions shows.
"The Real Housewives of DC" - Mainly the final two episodes and the reunion show. Otherwise, there was a lot of padding.
"Chopped"
"The Amazing Race"
"The Sing-Off"

-I kind of gave up "Brothers & Sisters", "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" during their current seasons.

"Women on the Verge ..." is closing and no mention of a cast album? There are a couple of other shows in the city also without cast albums ("Elf" and something off-Broadway I can't remember). I thought for sure that Sherie's home company would record "Women ..." Guess not.
Title: Re: COUNTDOWN TO 2011
Post by: bk on December 28, 2010, 04:54:26 PM
Sherie's home company doesn't pay for anything - the producers pay and hand it to them for a distribution fee - that's how it's done these days.  I think Lincoln Center has probably dropped enough money on this show and there is no upside to spending another $300,000.

You can get around in Manhattan though the cross-street corners have not been plowed. We had to go to the post office today (which was open) and then we went to Trader Joe's for some food. The Avenues and side streets are all plowed but as I said the corner cross streets are still full of snow. You have to walk in the street to cross. It's a little inconvenient but it's supposed to be in the 40s in a couple of days so it will melt off and we will be back to full streets soon (lots of slush though).

Sad to hear about Thom.

What a pity about Vincent.  "He" did make a few interesting comments over the weeks.  Oh, well...

BTW, What A Pity About Vincent is the title of my next ABC Movie of the Week suspense/thriller.  Or it may be the title of my next song about a teen-age love lost in a tragic accident.  I haven't decided yet.

3D Diffusion is a good writer and smart - that's never been the issue.  The issue is one of obsession, negativity, and spewing her unnecessary and inane bile on this board.

Vincent started off just fine, so well in fact I'm surprised he turned out to be 3D.

Thanks for posting Thom's obit. Sounds like a good and full life.

I thought so too.  On the bitter side of sweet it is a reminder how short our time with him was.

It sounds morbid, but I always wondered if something happened to me; would anyone on this site ever know.  I suppose my friend Sharry would tell Jason Graae, and he would tell BK.  Or maybe George would hear the news from Josh.

Add me to your list of immediate contact numbers. I'll tell the world.

I'm doing very well Jane. The snow has kept us inside and we are watching a TV4 (Britain) series called Dances to the Music of Time. We like it very much. We had to go out today to get some food since we had very little when we left for Long Island on Friday. We did bring home some ham and rice and jello and bread from LI but Anthony can't eat this diet just because I have to so we got some food today and he's fine. The diet is over, I hope, Thursday after I see the doctor. I assume I can stop because things are going so well. I'll slowly work regular food back into my diet. I'm looking forward to a bowl of oatmeal with dried cherries. I think I'll skip the nuts for a few days. We also hope to go out on New Year's Eve to our favorite restaurant. I won't over-indulge but it will be nice to have a piece of chicken that is not boiled and served with white rice and fake butter.

Kennedy Center Honors gets on my last nerve.....so I usually skip it.  Until I get my medal, I probably won't get involved with it.

Last week I watched SUNNY SIDE UP on TCM starring Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell.....that lively couple that MR BK wrote about last week.  It was an okay 1929 musical comedy......but both stars sounded like they had cartoon character voices.....some of the comedy was quite funny, and the songs were okay.....   AND there was a joke that Clifford Odets used later in HUMORESQUE....almost word for word!

DR Ben I'm very please you continue to improve.

Feel better vibes for Jose, Mary Linda & anyone else who needs them.  Keith was sick through the holiday & is still on the mend.  So far I didn't catch what he had, only a mild cold which I kept under control with Benadryl.  It was a shame to be sick while Bryan was home and limit our hugs.  On the other had Bryan & Kate cooked up a storm. :)  Craig did some cooking and did a good amount of the dish washing after watching me catch my breath & double over a few times from shoulder pain.  All the activity made it far worse than it has been in a long time.  Doing less kitchen worked helped a little each day & today it is much better.

It's even smaller!  When I was going to Western Washington University, I was in the jazz choir and Chuck Israels was the director!  I got to know him and his wife Margot and their daughter Jessica.  I graduated 21 years ago.  I don't know if they'd remember me.

Yesterday's lack of lists was more surprising - surely people saw movies this year.

Actually, I didn't respond to yesterday's T.O.D.;  because I didn't see any films this year.  Although I understand that they may soon have "talkies."

I did not really get a chance to see films and I some I want to see have not come to Fargo yet.

I did see Secretariat
Julie and Julia

I want to see True Grit or the King's Speech but that may be a challenge since Mother Nature is preparing to bitch slap the area with two snowstorms

I loved that mini-series. Makes me want to read all the books. I read the first three ages ago, and if I pick them up, I should probably start from the beginning again. There are 12 in all, I think.

I saw a video of a NYC snowplow destroying a parked SUV in front of an apartment building  :o

I saw that too.  The guy with the van is lucky it's all on video

I suggest that you keep the sound down - the F word is rather liberally used by the camera man

Oh, I've known Chuck's work for years because of the Evans albums.

Laura, yes, I've stated repeatedly that 3D Diffusion is a woman.  I know her name.  I know lots of her names, actually, but also her real name.  Once you know the name, it's easy to find lots of ramblings on the Internet.

I loved the Kennedy Center Honors.   I started watching when I finished the doc on Glenn Gould so I was able to FF through all the commercials.  I don't think I knew who Glen Gould was before seeing this show.  It was really interesting

I'm recording it, but I won't watch it tonight.  I'm watching the final episode of "The Sing-Off."  I love this show!

The Closer
The Good Wife
Big Bang Theory
Modern Family
Castle
Human Target

I enjoyed the last season of Medium.  I guess soon I will be saying the same about The Closer, which I'm very sad about.

Medium!  I really liked that show...another one that I've forgotten already.

Dakota is right about our friend 3D Diffusion - apparently she created 14 different usernames on one particular board - and was thrown off with each new name - when she tried the fifteenth time she was once again called out.  I'm glad to see we're not the only ones dealing with her particular brand of insanity.

What a sad, little person 3D must be.
