I'm planning a quick jaunt to Pittsburgh to see COPACABANA next Thursday. It's a show I've long wanted to see, and the main review (by critic Alice Carter) seems to find it very entertaining.
I wonder if they're still using the same set and costumes they used for their original production a few years. Quite extravagant and quite appropriate.
*And I've always had a soft spot for "Just Arrived" - such a great "entrance" song. And "Copa Girl" is a great "old broad" song.
I like the original London cast recording of this show. I bought the songbook on-line from London and for a vocal workshop quite a few years ago, I worked on "Bolero de Amor." I never got to actually perform the song, but the other people in the workshop really liked the song and the way I performed it. :)

Today at work, we're having a luau (style? inspired?) pot-luck. I don't think that there will be an actual roasting pig, though. I have several Hawaiian shirts from which to choose something to wear and for my culinary contribution, I'm bringing an ice cream pizza cake. Okay, it's store-bought, but it looks quite tasty. A good time should be had by all! :D

Morning all.
My lunch at Maoz yesterday was nice. We got our various foodstuffs and went to Union Square Park. There was a free table so we sat al fresco, ate our lunches and caught up. I had a plain falafel, Anthony had one with eggplant (we both added things from the toppings bar and then put on some yogurt sauce) and Sue had the salad box. It's a big salad and you can add more toppings if you choose. It's a very busy location. The three seats in the window area are the only sitting locations so it's really a buy and leave place (that's OK). The price is right and the food is good.

My boss is back today from her 8 days of vacation.

I don't eat "out there" foods. I'm a standard kind of guy. I'll eat things I haven't tried before but I don't do crazy things.

The most memorable meal I've ever had was back in the 1980s in Lafayette, LA.
I was there with my friend/publicity client, Steve Kanaly ("Dallas") for a rodeo in which he was the guest star.
One afternoon, our "handler" took us out to this restaurant on a bayou where we had the most fantastic Cajun meal: crawfish, catfish, jambalaya & the best cheesecake I've ever eaten.
In fact, I was so impressed with the Southern-style cheesecake that, when I returned to Los Angeles, I told the owner of Junior's Deli (another client) about it, and he wound up changing his NY-style cheesecake to Southern-style.

There used to be a German restaurant on Oxnard St., here in the valley. I ordered rabbit, and was served half a rabbit (no head of course) that was weird for me. And in Little Tokyo downtown, I ordered fish head soup, well it was broth and fish heads, that was weird too. Both were really good though.

Thank you to DRs Jose, Ben, and Dan(the Man) for recovery vibes for my brother-in-law. And, DR Jose, for your comments about the warning your family received before your mother's surgery. John's family was told he'd be sitting up the next day and walking the next. I think they were misinformed and their expectations were raised unrealistically.

If we are really serious about containing the growth of health care costs we can use the "best practices" available when I graduated from college:
No open-heart surgery (still experimental)
No organ replacement
No joint replacement
No use of CAT scan, MRIs. Etc.
No routine use of non generic pharmaceuticals
No use of combination chemotherapy, radiation treatment or taxanes and other highfalutin drugs

And i have no idea if the writers will even pursue this. Or perhaps they will have rafe move on to P3??? I really find P3 way too old for rafe (to me rafe seems like an early twenties kid). But i find it hard to believe they would introduce 2 gay characters and not have them interact.

Good morning, all! Things are improving slowly, but I am feeling better and getting quite antsy from my confinement. This morning, I'm seeing my doctor at 11:30. As of noon yesterday, she still had not received my x-rays from radiology. This leads to a diatribe on the Manhattan HMO known as HIP and their idiocy of allowing a week's time to elapse between x-rays and getting the results to the attending physician. God forbid I were in a matter of life and death, but such inefficiency from a "major" health insurance company is ridiculous.
So, I'm a bit more mobile, although the pains are always present, and I've been able to navigate about the apartment sometimes without the use of crutches. I'm still depending on muscle relaxer and vicodin; if the ibuprofen is doing anything, I don't know. Yesterday, I needed to make an emergency trip to the drug store at 81st and Broadway. I got back and forth on crutches although I moved quite slowly and spent a good hour in bed after getting back here.
I'm debating the rest of my life as I lie here and moan; since this clearly strikes without too much warning, I'm considering turning down all out-of-town jobs because I hate the thought of committing to something I may not be able to finish. Also, I'm not sure I want to be too far from my own apartment in this state of health.
My last comment before I begin my pre-doctor ablutions is to praise the friends I have, may of whom have volunteered to run errands, etc. I could not have gotten through the past nine days without our DR Jose, who schlepped, ran errands, banked, shopped and proofread for me, and Ron and Dona Raines. I'm very lucky and grateful to call them all really wonderful friends.
Before I forget, someone sent me flowers this morning; I haven't opened the container yet because I had other priorities. I'm delighted that someone thought to make this gesture but schlepping around a cramped space with a load of flowers isn't graceful when you can hardly move, or hardly carry the bundle with one hand, and having to make myself presentable to the deliverer quicky was uncomfortable. A card is much easier!
Enough about me.

Today my work project will be the Blu-ray of the final 90 minute episode of PRISON BREAK called THE LAST BREAK. I've never watched a second of the show, but Fox must think that people will be able to follow the plot and figure out character relationships if they're releasing the final episode on Blu-ray. I'm going to read the backstory on the character before I start watching, however. I want to be as fair to the program as I can.

"Also on Wednesday the library board approved a plan to offer early retirement buyouts to employees. Workers would get a $5,000 lump sum payment and 35 percent of their accrued sick leave balance, up to 800 hours. Kambitsch said the buyout will cost as much as $200,000 but should help reduce payroll."
When I groaned that it was a year late, Richard (the wise one in the family) asked if the grief that they've gone through in the past several months would have been worth $5000 to me. Guess not.
I truly hope that some of my friends who are eligible are smart enough to take it and - RUN!

I did recently try balut in the Philippines.
I notice a couple of the items on your list include things one would "normally" order at a sushi place: fish roe, seaweed, eel, sea urchin and quail eggs...
And fish roe could also be caviar...
It really is all a matter of perspective.
I've been catching up on episodes of both "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations" and "Bizarre Foods with Andrews Zimmern" on the The Travel Channel. Now if you want to talk about "far out" and "weird" foods, well, I think they have all of us beat hands down. -Especially Andrew Zimmern!!

How was the tripe prepared? It's not something I go looking for on restaurant menus, but there are some preparations that actually make it quite palatable. I do like it in menudo as well as a topping for Vietnamese pho. It's definitely a "texture" thing, but sometimes a bit of "unctious" can be a good thing.

According to the bonus features, that's exactly what happened, at Steve McQueen's insistence.
Even though technically Paul Newman's role of "The Architect" was larger, McQueen who doesn't appear until about an hour or so into the film insisted on the exact amount of speaking words as Newman's role.
Also the staggered billing I believe was a first.
McQueen is first on the left, but Newman was on the right but his name was higher so it all depends where your eye goes first that one decides who gets top billing.

Oy, live and learn department. I had imported the video from Gabe's birth through about his seventh month and had edited little snippets for what will be the Bar Mitzvah movie in Windows Movie Maker. I thought it kept copies of the edited snippets and so I deleted the imported video. Guess what? It doesn't. So I have to start over. I don't think I have enough space to import 13 years worth of videos and edit it down. The only thing I can think of is to edit each tape individually, burn DVDs of those edits, and then delete the source video and do the next one. Then when I'm done with all the DVDs I guess I can import the various edits to make a completed product. Edi? Anyone? A better solution?
Gabe just made me LOL. He's starting to get moolah in the mail from people who can't come and he got a very (as in VERY) generous check from the parents of one of Betsy's brother's wife. These are the very prominent Beverly Hills Cedars Sinai osteopath family, the family that owns a lot of property around L.A. and whose art collection is permanently on loan to the Getty. So anyhoo, Gabe is writing his thank you note and I'm telling him to put in facts about what he's doing, like taking Hebrew lessons twice a week and writing his D'var Torah. At which point Gabe, pretending to write, says, "So as you can see, I'm very busy, so please don't bother me again for anythiing less than $1000." My son, the comedian. :)

I really didn't know what caused it. There was frighteningly way too many ingredients on the package for what was supposed to be chicken catchatorre (sp?) But it had to be something or a combination of ingredients that caused it
I only carry the half tablets of Tylenol PM for an emergency. I’m not in a rush to take something that will knock me out, but at least I’m only taking a half dose of Benadryl which cannot be purchased from Benadryl. If your throat were to swell it might interfere with your breathing.
I know very quickly if I’m having a reaction to a food. I have found if I grab a fizzy drink, Pepsi is my fiz of choice, drinking it will fiz away the food product & reduce my allergy.

The most memorable meal I've ever had was back in the 1980s in Lafayette, LA.
I was there with my friend/publicity client, Steve Kanaly ("Dallas") for a rodeo in which he was the guest star.
One afternoon, our "handler" took us out to this restaurant on a bayou where we had the most fantastic Cajun meal: crawfish, catfish, jambalaya & the best cheesecake I've ever eaten.
In fact, I was so impressed with the Southern-style cheesecake that, when I returned to Los Angeles, I told the owner of Junior's Deli (another client) about it, and he wound up changing his NY-style cheesecake to Southern-style.

I read about Brenda Joyce on-line yesterday and in the newspaper today. I just watched her last film as Jane (with Lex Barker who was making his first appearance as Tarzan). Her replacement in the second Barker/Tarzan picture was not very good at all.

When I got in from lunch, I immediately got down to business with PRISON BREAK: THE FINAL BREAK on Blu-ray.
I had no trouble at all following the story, and while I'm sure there is tons of backstory between the leads and, say, T-Bag who's still in prison, it didn't really matter that I didn't know it. It was sufficient to know they didn't trust him.
Some good twists and turns in the plotting though the prison motif wasn't as well executed as it was in OZ and some plotting got a little garbled in the second half of the story.
Still, I enjoyed it, and I'm sure fans of the show had tears in their eyes with the ending.

The only bonus feature at all was two deleted scenes (totaling 4 minutes). I can't believe there wouldn't have been a commentary from the stars or the directors or even a retrospective featurette on the history of the show. That REALLY surprised me.
I guess they're saving that kind of thing for the Season 4 box set.

Next, I began looking at the soap operas for the day. I started with THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS which did have the break-up of Adam and Rafe and the Nikki conversation to Victor about Adam. Victor's reaction was a big surprise, and somehow, I have a feeling maybe Adam might think that he could find some way to lure Rafe back in to use him some more since Victor isn't disowning him over what he thinks he knows.

Next up was AS THE WORLD TURNS with Luke's big bombshell and the typical explosion of the family about it. Luke was in the previews for tomorrow, too, but it's easy to see where this is going. Luke's going to be off on business with his new job, and Noah's going to stray with his college professor.

Last night I began watching the "Making of MARNIE" documentary on the MARNIE DVD, and I only got part of the way through it before I stopped to begin watching TORCHWOOD. I've just got to say.....When the neighbor called the police to report a possible burglary, and the policeman knocked on our door in the middle of the night, did we get upset..NO. Keith talked to him, answered his questions and THANKED HIM for checking on the house. The next day I thanked the neighbor for calling the police & let her know our power was out & it was only Keith walking around with a flashlight.
I think Obama should have kept his thoughts to himself until he had all the facts.

Today my work project will be the Blu-ray of the final 90 minute episode of PRISON BREAK called THE LAST BREAK. I've never watched a second of the show, but Fox must think that people will be able to follow the plot and figure out character relationships if they're releasing the final episode on Blu-ray. I'm going to read the backstory on the character before I start watching, however. I want to be as fair to the program as I can.
I'm curious about this dvd and sort of anxious to see it. I think my library should get it in a few weeks (they have all the other Prison Breaks).
I don't know if they will explain the story. I can't really imagine that too many people would watch this who haven't ever seen the show.
At the end of Season 4 they jumped ahead a number of years. And this dvd that you have is supposed to fill in those blanks. I'll bet you can probably follow along with just finding out how the show ended. Although like Lost, the 4 seasons of Prison Break had a lot going on!

I watched a cute movie tonight, HOTEL FOR DOGS. It's rated G, and more of a family type movie. But if you like dogs, i think a lot of people would find this very cute. It stars emma roberts, who i thought was impressive.You just can't take your eyes off of her. It's a real feel-good movie.

My initial reaction was that I didn't like the idea at all. But, I didn't initially like the idea that formed the crux of most of this season either (the death of Jim) and it ended up being beautifully handled and often quite moving, so I'll reserve judgment until I see what they do with the concept.

TOnight I deemed the evening of "making of documentaries." I began by finishing up the making of documentary for MARNIE which I still had a good bit more to watch. At least they were honest about the initial reaction to the film. Robin Wood's final comment (You can't like Hitchcock if you don't like MARNIE and you don't love movies if you don't love MARNIE) is baloney, but otherwise it's an interesting documentary.

"Also on Wednesday the library board approved a plan to offer early retirement buyouts to employees. Workers would get a $5,000 lump sum payment and 35 percent of their accrued sick leave balance, up to 800 hours. Kambitsch said the buyout will cost as much as $200,000 but should help reduce payroll."
When I groaned that it was a year late, Richard (the wise one in the family) asked if the grief that they've gone through in the past several months would have been worth $5000 to me. Guess not.
I truly hope that some of my friends who are eligible are smart enough to take it and - RUN!
Washington state employees can buy back 25% of their sick leave when they retire (I don't know if there's a cap). Where I work, we can't...yet. I'm hoping that by the time I retire (in about 23 years), they'll have changed that policy. ;)

Then I watched the making-of documentary for DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER. I HATE it when Peter Bogdanovich tries to do impressions of people. He tries to do a Hitchcock impression, and it's just ridiculous.
Nice to get continuity straight in my mind, though. For some reason, I thought Grace Kelly made REAR WINDOW before DIAL 'M' but it's just the opposite.

Both. They knew him and were trying to help him out. He wasn't staying with them. He broke in. The 5 year old brother pretended he was asleep, but then was able to identify the guy. That's how they got him so quickly. The dad is putting on a strong exterior, but he is having a lot of problems dealing with it. Not only did he know this person, but he didn't wake up and wasn't able to protect his daughter.

Do you actually think that adam is bisexual? I really have no idea if he was just screwing around with rafe. Or if he ended up realizing he might like it. And i have no idea if the writers will even pursue this. Or perhaps they will have rafe move on to P3??? I really find P3 way too old for rafe (to me rafe seems like an early twenties kid). But i find it hard to believe they would introduce 2 gay characters and not have them interact.
No, Jennifer, I do NOT think that Adam is bisexual. That's why I put the word in quotes when I wrote it.
I wondered if some people think he might be bisexual. Because I would suspect most totally straight men would not be having sex with other men, even if it did suit their diabolical plans!
DR Jennifer - I believe you're thinking this whole Adam/Rafe thing out way too much. Just sit back and enjoy the absurdity of the whole situation. ;)
*Now, if Adam started doing porn, that whole "gay for pay" thing, well... That I could believe. ;D

Geez (zeeg, spelled backwards) where in tarnation have I been all day. This was one of the craziest days ever - just non-stop, something happening every minute, and when I finally got home I just went to the couch immediately, fell asleep, printed orders, and watched a couple of very disappointing Lost episodes.
