Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both meta and physical, and now it is time for you to post until the metaphysical cows come home.

And finally...AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!  DAMMIT!!!

I went to rehearsal (we just worked on choreography and did a speed-through of the lines) and when I got home, I decided to watch "Glee" and record it for my friend Margo (she's fallen in love with the show from watching the DVDs).  I'm watching it and recording it to my DVD burner but then the recording ends before the show is actually over!  What the heck??  I had my DVR set to record it a couple of minutes over, but evidently, that's not long enough. :P

But the worst part was that NOTHING was recorded from ABC!! :o I had both "Lost" and "V" set to record and NEITHER SHOW WAS RECORDED!  WHAT IS GOING ON??  I've been recording the whole season of "Lost" for a co-worker, but now I missed one...and they're not repeating the previous week's episodes anymore.

Damn them!  Damn them all to HELL!!

I don't suppose anyone recorded "Lost" and could make me a copy?  Even VHS would be fine.  That's more important to me and my co-worker than "Glee."  Margo can watch "Glee" on-line, but I don't think that my co-worker has a fast enough computer/Internet access to watch "Lost" on-line. :-[

I'm a bit put off at HWHC.  I spent a lot of time writing several emails about ideas for his neighborhood. Each time he replied as if they were good new ideas.  Luckily when I got to the meeting I decided to listen before speaking.  Nearly all the ideas had either been tried and didn't work or were being worked on at the moment.  I knew they weren't original, so that didn't surprise me, but he could have told me that.

I really did enjoy the people at the meeting. I stayed and talked to people for an hour after HWHC left.  I'm going to do the design standards and will do the neighborhood pick up and help with other projects.  I'm a bit in over my head with the design review standards, but there are people here to help me and I've always been interested in that, so it will be a fun learning process.

Good morning, all! I am very tired this morning. Last night between 11 and 11:30, I had to put up with what I suppose was horseplay between owner and dog as I had to listen to a lot of thumps, bumps, thuds, and the constant clatter of an animal's claws tapping on the floor while the animal ran rampant about the apartment to a lot of loud sounds of amusement from its owner. Every day murder seems more and more the only possible solution.

My irritation over all of this naturally kept me from getting to sleep as I mentally ran through various solutions, and sometime after 1:30 am, long after i had dozed off, I had to deal with the creep above me walking around the apartment in 2-ton cleats. This morning, when he left the apartment to walk the dog, around 7:15, I was awakened by his door slamming. I think I will call the landlord today.

So, I am off to Toyland. I have some LADY OF THE SLIPPER questions from the artist laying out the scores in their new format that can only be answered by looking at notes from editing sessions four years ago. After that, I have another stop at the market, and then back here for OZ edits. Tonight I'm going out with Danny Burstein and his beautiful wife Rebecca Luker after SOUTH PACIFIC, so I'll probably have a late afternoon nap.

re: Glee going over last night.

That is the same thing that happened to me last week too!  It's frustrating.  Normally i would always just record it over (since IDOL is bound to always go over). But i have something i record at 10pm. I ended up just recording the last 5 minutes on my VCR. Oy!

Btw, on last night's IDOL Ryan Seacrest said the results tonight are definitely gonna go over. I just wish they scheduled it in the time. It's very annoying otherwise.

Anyways those who missed the last 3 minutes of GLEE should be able to watch it online on this link if they are in the US:

DR MATTH - there was only a threat of a sing-off in the parking lot - things were smoothed over in the next couple of sentences of dialog and it never took place.....last few minutes was more singing.

J. Groff looked a little uncomfortable in the big group number....it's amazing how everyone else fits right in as a group....which they should....he may have been "acting" his part as a newbie.

For obvious reason I will be skipping GLEE next week.

No, I'll CRAWL up the stairs if I have to in order to get on-line. I'm addicted, and I'm the first one to admit it. The internet is my most important source for entertainment news and views, and I scour it three times daily to pick up everything I can from it.

I went to fox.com this morning to watch the show to get to that last number. Fox very thoughtfully allows a viewer to place the pointer at the spot in the show where he wants to begin downloading, so I didn't have to watch the entire show to get to that last number.

I enjoyed it ("Like a Prayer") though why they felt the need to bring in that church choir at the end was just a bit of overkill. Yes, Groff was definitely not given any solo moments in that number (nice to hear Kurt's soprano get some attention) and seemed to be playing almost catch-up with the choreography. We'll see if being a part of New DIrections continues to seem awkward for him.

With HUMAN TARGET now over and GLEE moved to Tuesday nights, the only show I have left now on Wednesday night is MODERN FAMILY, and they're showing two reruns tonight, so I have a completely free night to watch some movies tonight. I'd like to watch a Blu-ray and a Warner Archive disc, but I'll see how I feel later in the day before deciding what I want to watch.

Sorry, DR George, about your Tivo not getting LOST. I'm pretty sure I deleted it after I watched last night.

As for the GLEE cutoff, IDOL running over is just ridiculous since they had already slotted the show to run over and it ran over EVEN MORE. They've been on the air almost a decade now. Seems like they'd have this down to a science by now.

Yes DR MATTH - the last three episodes of SPARTACUS were even bloodier than any Al Adamson movie....

And SPARTACUS is kind of like DARK SHADOWS - just because a character is dead doesn't mean he/she might not wander through a flashback or memory sequence.

My DVR is behaving strangely.  A week ago I noticed that it wasn't showing the program titles so I called and they had me do a reset by pushing some red button.  That seemed to work and it seemed to gather some of the program titles - she said the rest would follow in the next day or two, only it didn't, and now we're back to no titles.  She said if it continued to unplug the unit and then plug it back in, which I guess I'll try this morning.  If that doesn't work, I'll call again and they'll have to come out and do something.  I looked at the dish and nothing is blocking its signal that I can see.

FJL, yes, the stabbing was done behind my back from a most unexpected source, a guy who evidently wanted one of his friends hired for the job.  I've met her and she will be an absolute fiasco in the job, which they'll find out soon enough.  This position is a rather strange combination of vocal arranger, pianist-conductor and emcee, and this lady can barely (and I do mean barely) play a C chord on the piano.  (Did I mention most of these seniors need their songs transposed, and all of the charts I provided are leadsheets only?).

This is turning into a very frustrating day! The computer at the office seems to have lost its ability to produce any sound of any volume and nothing I've done is restoring it. I blame our cleaning service, since it was working the last time I was here. The fax I tried to send twice will not go through. What the hell is going on? I, of course, blame the Packard Humanities institute for all of this.

Vibes to one and all needing them today. I had meant to post that earlier and was so angry at my neighbor that I forgot. My priority was to turn the volume of the tv as high as possible and leave.

As I'm sure all the pianists here will agree, people tend to assume when you play the piano well that piano playing is an easy art to master and that any fool can do it.  ;)

I gave my brother's computer a similar treatment last week....with a positive result.  Sometimes a power surge or a brief interruption in electric service causes problems, I guess.

I watched THE LOVELY BONES last night on DVD.

The first half-hour was great.  It really grabbed me.  Then, they got into all that cgi crap and the thing just dwindled away.

This is the kind of movie that really irks me, because the story had great potential and they blew it.

However, the performances were excellent.  Saoirse Ronan could become the Meryl Streep of her generation.

We get quarterly statements.  However, we were paid an advance for the rights, so the royalties won't kick in for a while.

Speaking of DARK SHADOWS, this week I've picked up another of the many unread books from my home library and this week's selection is an autobiography of Grayson Hall.

It's a badly written book about a very disagreeable woman who probably got the career she deserved.

I love reading about show biz!

As for Andrea Marcovicci - There's a reason she's called a "chanteuse" and "song stylist" and not a "singer". ;)

*But she really is best experienced "live and in person" rather than via recording. It really is the whole package with her.

BK - I'd imagine the reason Isherwood re-reviews (or Brantley re-reviews) when the Times out-of-town or off-Broadway review is responsible for the show coming in is rather complex.    But to speculate - let's say you're the NY Times folk - how does it look if the paper is responsible for a show coming in to NYC and the show then gets a bad Times review in New York (which almost always would make it flop, unless it had a pre-sale element to it).  The newspaper starts to look ridiculous in terms of its position as a hit-maker; much as anyone poo-poos it, the Times people must actually really like (even bank on) the perpetuation of that reputation.

Hello, everyone.

A bit of angst today in the posts--JMK's brouhaha, Larry's continued noise issues. Would this be a good day to do

YOUR FAVORITE EXAMPLE OF STREET JUSTICE??

You know, when the people you think need a real kick in the butt finally get it--and often from out of nowhere. My favorite street justice film is BEING JULIA, but there must be many others. Film noir is often big on revenge, but I'm not talking about killing someone--something a bit more subtle.

(BTW, I'm not having any particular anger issues, I just like to see the tables turned now and then.)

My question for ASK BK day.....when you have written a musical and it is licensed by an organization such as R/H - are you paid your royalties by the production, or is it done on a quarterly or annual basis?

We get quarterly statements.  However, we were paid an advance for the rights, so the royalties won't kick in for a while.

OIC.  Thanks.

DR JEANNE - My favorite such incident is in the book and both film versions of THE RAZOR'S EDGE.....

Isabel.....and Sophie.......

Gene Tierney & Anne Baxter......and to a somewhat lesser degree, although not much.... Catherine Hicks & Theresa Russell....

"Zubrovka.....it is like listening to music by moonlight....."

And Isabel devastates Sophie and then leaves her alone with a bottle of the liquor......how Isabel gets paid back is terrific - and would only be better if she had any understanding of why Larry does what he does......

DR MattH - The addition of the choir at the end of "Like A Prayer" may have been overkill, but it was also a tribute to the original video and recording.

Well, if I'm found dead, check out the neighbor above me: I just filed a complaint with the landlord. I went back to my emails to the neighbor above me: on Feb 7, I wrote to him:  I do want to talk to you because I don't want any bad feelings between us.  He has never responded. I wrote to him on 3/01 about the falling ceiling in my bathroom; again, no response or apology, since it was his unreported loose, shaky toilet causing the problem and he was aware the toilet was unsteady. I want him dead now.

Wednesday afternoon greetings!  Today I went to Dayton's

Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Service (http://www.cbccts.org)

for April's meeting of volunteer administrators.  The blood bank treated us well - served pizza for lunch and gave us great tote bags and T-shirts and a behind the scenes tour of the facility.

It was nice to see my volunteer admin friends - hadn't been to a meeting since the December holiday luncheon.

It bugged me too that they went over. But was IDOL scheduled to go over? On my guide it had it from 8-9pm.

I think they either purposely go over or else they just don't care. The judges seemed to be speeding up last night. But then ryan would blab to some of the contestants.

Sorry about your DVR problems DR George!

Thanks, Jennifer.  It's VERY annoying. :P

Is there a way to check on your DVR if something is not going to record?

On my PVR you press "scheduled recordings" and it shows a list of what should record.  But it doesn't always happen (sometimes a network will change the time of one of their shows (example 8:59pm-10pm and if have it set at record only from 9-10pm) then it won't record.

But i can double check by going to a grid of the tv schedule and it will show up in red if it is going to tape.

Thanks for the explanation; it makes much more sense now since the show was a total tribute to Madonna. And it was the finale number for the episode so I suppose a grandiose element wasn't inappropriate on second thought.

It's happened to me before as well. Sometimes these machines just reset themselves. You can do all the checking and doublechecking in the world and if they are feeling temperamental, they will just botch the job. Nothing is more infuriating when you're counting on something doing its job and it doesn't.

Before I started on lunch, I skimmed through last night's IDOL. Nothing bowled me over, but I did think Lee did the best job last night. Tim, Aaron, and Siobhan seem to be the most vulnerable to me as I thought their vocals were the shakiest. Casey may not get a lot of votes either though I thought his song was just fine even if it didn't quite capture the tone of the evening.

The real surprise for me in THE DESERT SONG was Allyn Ann McClerie's dancing.

Miss McClerie's career began, I believe, in ON THE TOWN, which is where she met and married Adolph Green. I think she's wonderful in WHERE'S CHARLEY?. which she left to do the lead in MISS LIBERTY. At some point she and Adolph Green slit up and she married George Gaynes. I also like her in CALAMITY JANE. She was Gwen Verdon's standby in REDHEAD, and I think she's wonderful in the recording of the Lincoln Center production of SHOW BOAT. I also like her as the grieving madwoman in JEREMIAH JOHNSON, and her last big role was Molly Dodd's mother.

Heads up, people...Facebook widens reach to tailor broader Web (http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20100421/US.TEC.Facebook.Web/).

Quote
NEW YORK — Facebook is spreading its wings to the broader Web. It's a move that could change the way people experience the online world, though it could come with deeper privacy implications.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says the new tools will allow users to see personalized versions of other websites they visit. It'll be based on the things they have shared on their Facebook profiles, such as their friends, bands they like or news stories they have liked.

If it works and users embrace it, Facebook could gain valuable insights that could help it sell more advertising, potentially rivaling online ad leader Google Inc.

Zuckerberg disclosed the new tools Wednesday at a conference for software developers in San Francisco.

I see Fox is repeating this week's GLEE episode on Friday night. Good! I'll record it so I can see that last number on the big screen TV.

The ratings were again "gleeful" last night with 13 million viewers.

Cool!  I can re-record it, too!  Thanks for the info!  Do you know what time?

I think I read 9 p.m., but I'd have to check about that.

Watching The Chocolate Soldier on TCM.  MGM must have really been desperate to put a scare into Jeannette MacDonald....but honestly didn't they give Rise Stevens a screen test?

And after they piped that pan on the big screen - they STILL put her in a movie?  Whew!

Oy, the calling today to arrange this move, and the moving guy hasn't even come over yet.  We actually had him here 2 months ago to get a quote on packing and moving everything and it was simply too exorbitant, so I've spent the last two months on daily shleps to the new house and we really have probably 90% of our movable stuff over there already.  All the movers will have to do is the larger furniture now so I'm hoping that goes quickly and cheaply.

I agree. The camera does not love her. I watched THE CHOCOLATE SOLDIER the last time TCM showed it, and her voice surprised me in its heaviness. It was not a easy mix with Eddy's baritone.

While driving into town for lunch out, to celebrate Keith's birthday, I noticed pink balloons hanging from the sign at our veterinary's office.  We were very excited.  I called from my cellphone & accidentally called her cell instead of the office.  On the 19th, her actual due date (first baby too) she had a baby girl with a full head of hair. :D

I missed her baby shower because of my shoulder.  If I get her a baby gift soon we can take it over & see the baby before she returns to work.

Ever heard of it?  Me either.....

An original musical on the General Electric Theater hosted by Ronald Reagan.

If ya got $200 ya can buy the television soundtrack.  :o

Speaking of DARK SHADOWS, this week I've picked up another of the many unread books from my home library and this week's selection is an autobiography of Grayson Hall.

It's a badly written book about a very disagreeable woman who probably got the career she deserved.

I love reading about show biz!

She was, without a doubt, one of the least talented actresses to ever appear regularly on network television.

We had wet snow (meaning it didn't stick) & rain this morning.  Luckily it cleared up while I was walking with my friends this morning.  The snow on the mountains was beautiful.  After our walk we went to a new coffee house in town which has good hot chocolate & muffins.

While I was indulging Keith headed for the gym & had an extra hard workout which made him feel good.

This afternoon we took Sherlock for a short (it was windy & cold) walk & then left him in the car while we had a nice lunch.  Shortly after we returned home DS Bryan Skyped.  While we were talking to Bryan Craig called & then Craig's DW got on the phone.  We were talking for close to an hour. :)  Now Keith is entertaining himself with working on genealogy.   I think he has had a nice day.

Jennifer, what about an ice cream "cake"?

I don't know that i've ever had a great ice cream cake.  I usually don't even have a cake anymore. But this year I think I will.

Remember when we were young and we wanted our birthdays to be exciting? Now we are happy to have a nice quiet day.

As my hairdresser was saying today, "Boring is good."

DR Jane does Keith have a birthday cake?

I'm trying to decide what kind of cake i want for mine. I am sort of picky since i don't actually like the cake part of cake. Maybe cheesecake.

No cake, just popcorn.  For a better table at the restaurant he mentioned it was his birthday.  I think they were disappointed he didn't order dessert.

Cheesecake is good.  What about an ice cream cake, without the cake part. ;)  If you don't like cake does this mean you easily leave alone the cup cakes when you bake them?

We're trying to decide what kind of cake my mom will make for my niece's first birthday in 3 weeks.

My 4 year old niece picks her own cakes (she's already decided what she wants for september). But we are not sure what to make for the baby. She is having a big party.

I think the choices are: blue (blue's clues), elmo, ... i forget what the other choices are.

The only time i bake cupcakes is if my niece has to take them to daycare.  Or that one time on valentine's day. But i gave them all to her.  Actually the only kind of cake mix i like is cherry chip. So i often bake those for my niece. And i like the icing!

For Craig's first birthday party Bryan insisted I make a Cookie Monster cake.  It was my first real attempt (did it once with a friend who did most of the work) at cake decorating.  The fur was easy to do without ruining the cake.  I made that cake for both boys, and a few of their friends, for years before moving on the R2D2, Carebear & a few others.  Pac Man was the easiest.

My point, you might let big sister suggest a first birthday cake.

I love ice cream cakes, with a think layer of cake at the bottom or without.  Carvel's has the best with their chocolate crunchies in the middle.

Jennifer not all restaurants give free cakes, some charge you & put a candle on it, some comp what you order.

Well my mom used to be a semi-professional cake decorator. So she can do any of these cakes.  I would have thought that they would have let big sister help choose. But i think my mom and sister are gonna choose. I saw the cake pans at the rental store and i thought the Blue's Clues one was awesome.

My older niece had care bear, dora, and strawberry shortcake. And this year cinderella. The baby does not know any of these characters really, so she won't care.

But she is so cute. This week you can tell her to wave to you and she does!

Sounds good.  A restaurant that has a standard birthday dessert sometimes gives two desserts if you order something else.  I have a feeling where we went today might have comped the birthday dessert.  At least they didn't serve one when he declined.  We have had that & then I feel guilty if we don't eat it.

Hot fudge sundaes are quick and easy to prepare, and restaurants are likely to have everything they need at hand. I recall BK ordering one for me for my birthday once. I liked it; it was a treat without being too-too.

When I went down, I picked out THE SECRET ADVERSARY from the stack of to-watch DVDs from the bar. This is the BBC film version of Agatha Christie's second novel. It's a mystery thriller instead of a murder mystery, and though I didn't remember who the villain was when the show began, I figured it out before the revelation happened in the movie. James Warrick and Francesca Annis played Tommy and Tuppence through a series of BBC versions of Christie's novels and short stories featuring the pair. I'll enjoy seeing some of the shorter ones from PARTNERS IN CRIME in the upcoming days.

Then I put in the DVD of BLACK NARCISSUS. Criterion is putting out its Blu-ray version of the movie in July, and as many times as I've watched this movie, I don't think I ever spent time listening to the Scorsese/Powell commentary track, so that's what I watched and listened to this evening. (This will save me a lot of time in July when it and THE RED SHOES are issued by Criterion in Blu-ray and I have to review them.)

Not a great track. Scorsese breaks in to make some comments at key moments, but most of it is Powell's rather slow, meandering thoughts about the movie (including things he doesn't like about it). Nice that I have this listened to now and don't have to take time with it in June/July.

Well, there's already a rather marvelous blu-ray of Black Narcissus already out in the UK and all region.  There is, in fact, no possible way for the Criterion to be any better - in fact, I'm guessing it won't be as good, in the same way that their M has had the black levels boosted and in the process come up with a transfer that is darker and with less detail than its Brit counterpoint.

Unplugging the DVR seems to have done the trick.  Unfortunately, for the first and only time, it screwed up the recording of last night's Lost and cut off the final eight minutes of the show - if anyone can please write me or post here with a spoiler what happened after Jack jumps off the boat, that would be much appreciated.

I thought this was going to be a lighter day, but after my morning meeting I never stopped until just now.  I had to write the liner notes, and then I had to do notes for the gift CD along with the track titles and then I spent three hours on the phone giving corrections on the first fifty pages of Mr. BIG's book.  I spent sixteen hours going through and finding all the little things that needed fixing and we're doing them now.

At least she could do this song:  http://mog.com/inrumford/blog/189089

I saw Loudon Wainwright do this in concert last night with Richard Thompson.

For those who might know this guy:

Bill Mullikin
Broadway actor in ‘Hello Dolly'

Bill Mullikin, 83, an actor best known for his long-running role as Cornelius Hackle in "Hello Dolly," died April 3 in Aptos, Calif., said his daughter, Kate. He had Alzheimer's disease and was in hospice care.

He was born April 19, 1926, in Baltimore and graduated from Loyola University of Maryland with a bachelor's degree in history.

He made his Broadway debut in "New Faces of 1952" and appeared in more than 2,000 performances of "Hello Dolly" with such actresses as Ginger Rogers, Dorothy Lamour and Phyllis Diller in the title role, his daughter said. His film work included "Hell Is for Heroes" in 1962.

Steve and I headed out to dinner earlier.  I was in the mood for Italian, so we opted for Mamma Zu.  I really love the food at Mamma Zu, however, I had forgotten just how busy and noisy that place can get at times, and tonight was no exception. When we got there, we were told there was going to be a 30-minute wait for a table.  Well... OK.  That gave Steve and I some time to catch up.  We waited and chatted outside.  After a while we headed inside to check on our table.  Well... As we walked inside, I noticed a couple who had come in after us being seated.  It turned out we had just missed hearing our name being called.  -Of course, since the place was so noisy... Well... We decided to go ahead and wait it out, and about another 30 minutes later, we were seated... And then about 15 minutes later our waitress finally took our order...

Thankfully, the food was as fantastic as ever, and they even comped us an appetizer to compensate for the longer than necessary wait.

I guess, in a way, it was nice to see that nothing has changed over the past 20 years. ;) :-\ ::)
