Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written quickly, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently raving over the transfer of Lord Of The Rings.

Good morning, all!  I am very pissed over last night's noise from the pig above me between midnight and 2 am last night, especially since I went to bed at 11, knowing i had to be up for the McGlinnventory at 6:30. I have no idea how much sleep I got last night and I susopect that by 3 pm I will be comatose. So, I wil shortly be off to Park Avenue and 23rd Street for today's McGlinnventory. After that, I have a stop at Toyland before I head back uptown.

DR Jose, the 1902 WIZARD OF OZ bears as much relationship to the Baum book as I do. Julian Mitchell and his producer Fred Hamlin ran all over Baum and Paul Tietjen's comic opera proposal and brought in a ton of Broadway writers to redo the score. Most of the numbers have absolutley nothing with the plot and provide every excuse for one of the cast to have a star turn in front of an audience. The original production had a lot of numbers and by the time it went into the Witmark Music Library, a lot of interpolations had replaced things. My friend Joseph Rubin has about 30 cut songs and there are another 22 songs now lost.

In answer to DR Jose's comment last night --

"DR MattH - Good to read that you got your cable box issues worked out.  And I'm ever more amazed that you were able to get a service technician to come out the same day!?!?!"

I think I must have gotten bumped up to the top of the list because I had already made a run to one of the Time-Warner locations to swap out the box and they knew I had been without cable for more than 24 hours at that point. As I've said many times in the past, while I understand others have trouble with their cable providers, I've never gotten anyting but top quality service from Time-Warner in Charlotte.

What's more, I was told to expect the technician between 1-3 p.m. He got here at 12:40! By 1 p.m. he was gone, and I could carry on with my work project yesterday.

My problem with LOTR: FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS was that I'd never read the books.

So, watching the theatrical release, I was a bit confused  for the first half hour or so, because I didn't really understand who the hell these characters were and what kind of world they were in.  [I'm not big on fantasy worlds anyway.]

I later saw the extended version which, for me, made everything much more clear.

I don't usually like extended versions because they, almost always, reinstate footage that was best left on the cutting room floor (e.g. RIDE WITH THE DEVIL, the 2nd two LOTR movies).  This first film in the trilogy is an exception.

Good morning!

Chillier this moring than I was expecting, and I should have put a sweatshirt on over my t-shirt. Still, the walk was great, and I was pleased that I was n't exhausted at all from it after skipping it yesterday since I mowed the grass. It's not getting out of the 60s today, a change from the 80 we've had the last two days.

I do know that if I have time tonight (and I should have plenty of time), I plan to look at Al Jolson's 1930 movie MAMMY from Warner Archives today. This is that rare Warner Archive disc that's coming from a restored and remastered source, so I'll be interested to see what kind of quality it has.

I'm heading downstairs now to catch up with last night's Elvis-themed edition of AMERICAN IDOL with mentor Adam Lambert.

Then I'll start on lunch. I'll have to fish something out of the archives to watch while I eat. By watching GLEE last night, I've exhausted any potential DVRed programming already.

I think that it's great that MAMMY and other movies are being preserved and made available for people who want to see them.

However, let's not kid ourselves. Except for Jolson's singing, this is a boring movie. The script just limps along, and even Michael Curtiz' direction can't save it.

There are classic films and there are curios. MAMMY is definitely a curio.

And speaking of my tux shirt...

Starting tonight, I shall be playing for one of Richmond's hometown Divas, Kathy Halenda.  The Richmond Triangle Players (http://www.richmondtriangleplayers.com/) are hosting her "Brassy Broads of Broadway" show for a one-week run in their new space.

It's kind of a homecoming for both of us. Kathy is currently is based out of North Carolina, and I am currently living in New York City.  Additionally, RTP was where I basically made my professional debut in Richmond as part of the band for their production of Back To Bacharach in David after I moved back to Richmond (for the second or third time).

*RTP's Managing Director also happens to be Phil Crosby who some DRs may remember from the early days of HHW when we were still using the "brown board".

Was reading DR CP's original screenplay for THE FLY on the special edition DVD.  I think I like his characters more than the ones in the movie.

One of my favorite things about the story and the original was that the couple were man and wife....Patricia Owens was very good in the original - and I loved her in SAYONARA as well.

In DR CP's script, they are a married couple.....in the final movie they are not - and there is a third wheel played by an actor who is NOT....well....very good.....

HINT: Set multiple alarms and place your iPhone on the other side of the room so that you have to get out of bed to turn it off.  -And that "Alarm" alarm sound, I've found, is the most annoying, and, thus, successful. ;)

I actually think it will be reviewed. Although, with the current state of Arts coverage in the "paper of record" here in Richmond, that really doesn't mean much anymore. :-\  -The weekly's will most likely be reviewing it to, but since they're a weekly, the review won't come out until after the run is completed.  However, apparently, tickets sales have been good, and it's also a small house, so that helps. ;)

Do you think you will return for the senior citizens?

Most of these places I play for privately already, and one has already asked me to just bring the seniors and they'll pay me.  That's how completely the Senior Center has shot itself in the foot--we were their touring ambassadors, so to speak, for all their programs, and now I'll be an ambassador for my private checkbook, LOL.

I just returned from what I thought was going to be a wild goose pumpkin chase.  Because my book group is meeting here tomorrow evening and because the main character in our book often eats pumpkin, I'd decided to make pumpkin pie for our refreshments.  There was no canned pumpkin to be found at Kroger on Monday and they told me they can't even order it.  So, today I went out with 3 other stores on my itinerary.  I did find it at the first store and, after checking the "use by" dates, bought enough to make 2 pies tomorrow and some later in the year.  Has anyone else heard about a shortage of canned pumpkin?

Interesting, I never thought one would be confused it they hadn't read the books.  I think you missed something special having not read them.

Maybe, but as I said, I've never been a big fan of fantasy worlds.  If it wasn't a musical, I probably wouldn't even like THE WIZARD OF OZ.

Of course, if you've read my book, then you'd know that, according to Harry Pennypacker, Oz was not a fantasy world after all.

I notice that it's available only during fall/winter over the holidays. But since I started cooking my own, I never but the cans anymore. I roast enough for the year -- drenched in butter, of course -- and then just pop it in the freezer in 2 cup baggies (I'm AR about that, but most of my recipes call for 2 cups). It keeps all year. Not that that helps now when there's none left to buy, but ...

I'm not much of a fantasty world fan, either (except for musicals). And I didn't like the books when I was a teenager, but I found the movies enjoyable enough. I will have to admit that I saw all of them on DVD and in a party setting where plenty of drinks were being poured. that makes quite a lot bearable.

Probably bad form to pop in here just to promote, but I've been doing something unusual some might like to see: RIPFest is a festival of hastily and cheaply made short films, half of which are musicals.  Since Saturday, I've been writing screenplay and lyrics; we pre-record songs tomorrow, shoot over the weekend, and it'll be screened for the public a week from Monday.  Here's the detes:

Monday, April 26, 2010 at 7:00pm

Anthology Film Archive, 32 2nd Av. (2nd St.) NYC
Screenings at 7pm, 8:15 and 9:30pm
Tickets available now at www.smarttix.com - search for the event "RIPFEST"

I've been listening to the cast recording of AMERICAN IDIOT and I enjoyed it a lot! (it's currently available for a free listen at MTV.com  (http://www.mtv.com/music/the_leak/green_day/american_idiot_the_official_cast_recording/#full-desc)--warning--it's not for everyone's taste...)

I'm a little bit disappointed that they stuck so slavishly to the original arrangements from the album and I'm finding that the lead female doesn't pack enough of a punch to be able to deliver her songs that were written for male voices.  But these are minor complaints.  I'm a big fan of Green Day and I'm hoping that the show does well.

SPOILERS

I saw two of the three "gasp" moments on last night's LOST coming.

abc one two and then there were completely and they came out and went down the hill one two three four and there
abc one two and then there were completely and they came out and went down the hill one two three four and there
I love gasp moments. And as mentioned there were quite a few last night.  The first for me was jacob's girl helper (don't know her name) blowing herself up. I did not see that coming at all.  Then we had desmond and the car. I actually thought he was going to talk to locke. I guess what he did was not completely out of the blue. But it did seem a bit much for goodie desmond.  I guess faux-locke and desmond was the most predictable. Although still pretty gasp worthy.  Btw, i guess sun is not having too many problems learning her lines. I hope they rectify this next episode as i'm not interested in watching her write notes to people.

I don't think anyone has EVER claimed that MAMMY was a great film. It was also Jolson's first flop at the box-office, so even back then folks knew that it wasn't memorable stuff.

I watched last night's AMERICAN IDOL before and during lunch preparation. The judges were weird last night. They praised Tim who gave a shaky, nerve-inflicted performance of "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" and were picky about Lee and Casey who outsing and out perform him every week.

I thought Andrew was the worst and Crystal the best.

Loved seeing the GLEE folks in the audience, and I also enjoyed Adam Lambert's mentoring of the singers. He did a fine job with suggestions, and he certainly nailed their strengths and weaknesses perfectly.

While I ate lunch, I picked out an episode from Season Three of NCIS to watch. This was the one with Connor Trineer as a drug smuggler who kidnaps the NCIS director so NCIS will give him back his baby brother who had been arrested by them. Good show with some really tense moments.

Then I spent the majority of the afternoon with I LOVE LUCY: THE MOVIE. It was a fine compilation of three season one episodes, and the bridging sequences and introduction/conclusion were also pretty ingenious, I thought.

The disc also had some nice production notes on the whole backstory of this project, and I learned a lot reading these notes before watching the movie.

But why these three episodes? That's never explained, and since two of the three ("The Benefit" and "The Ballet") aren't nearly in the same class of comedy as "Lucy Does a TV Commercial," "Lucy's Schedule," "Pioneer Women," or "The Freezer" from season one, it makes one wonder what Lucy and Desi found so appealing about those other two episodes.
Title: Re: LORD OF THE TRANSFERS
Post by: Matt H. on April 14, 2010, 01:25:37 PM
Also on the disc was the colorized version of the musical episode "Lucy Goes to Scotland." Now, I HATE colorization, but I'll be darned if they didn't do a first rate job with the colorization here. The only giveaway for me was seeing the obvious makeup blush on Lucy's face and on Ricky's face, but the colorizers merely painted their faces beige without adding any pink to their complexions. But it's the most natural use of the process I've yet seen.

Again, CBS/Paramount has included program notes dealing with this episode and show a production gaffe in close-up that occurred during the filming of the show. The colors chosen for the episode were based on color phtos taken for tests and a color home movie shot during a dress rehearsal, so the color is accurate insofar as the real colors used on the show were.

Happy to see that GLEE earned its all-time highest ratings last night returning from a four month hiatus to win its time slot. Granted, it was facing reruns on CBS and has the benefit of a big AMERICAN IDOL lead-in, but it actually built on its IDOL ratings lead-in with viewers under 35.

My biggest fear was that the four months away would stall the momentum the series was building late last year, but Fox did a good job building up buzz and anticipation for the show's return. I hope the strong ratings can continue for the show.

MR BK how would you and DR CP feel about dining in the restaurant at your hotel.

The theatre is in the middle of NOWHERE to be sure....however EVIL KURT may yet come through.

I haven't even booked a room at the hotel yet.  Here's my only caveat about eating before seeing a show -- that we have plenty of time to do it leisurely and aren't rushing for the curtain at the last minute.

Jrand, I had my couple married because I thought it needed that emotional investment for the woman to stay with the guy.  If I have a criticism of Cronenberg's version, it would be I don't know that the girl would have quite the emotional investment in someone she had so recently met.

The day has been a little nuttier than I wanted it to be.  I had some eggs at the Studio Cafe, got the toothpaste, did some errands and whatnot, then had to ship not five CDs but fifteen, all of which had to be boxed, addressed, and postaged, then taken to the postal office.  Then I had to spend thirty minutes on chat board with Apple fixing a mobile me problem that affected only the laptop - finally got that working properly again.  And now Continental.  I've been trying to go jogging but now can't until after five, since the person who's watching the house is coming then to get the key.

I listened to a little bit of this last night, but it was getting late, so I couldn't check out very much of it.  I liked what I heard, though.

Finally got someone on the phone and found I'd just wasted twenty-five minutes on hold - the One Pass line can't even pull up reservations - she then switched me to the regular number, the one I couldn't get through - hold time was supposed to be four minutes - it's been fifteen so far and I am really getting to the point where I will lose any ability to be nice.

Back to LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING - I, too, was quite confused the first time I saw it.  I knew who Bilbo was because of THE HOBBIT, but, I got really confused when Liv Tyler's Arwen (?) first showed up, also with Stryder's initial appearance, the ring-wraiths confused the hell out of me and I couldn't tell the difference between Merry and Pippin.

That said, I still have not read the books, though they have sat on my shelf for a long time before Peter Jackson even thought of making the films.

And to add insult to injury, I had seen the animated LORD OF THE RINGS and hated it with a passion - I probably still do. . .

But, on second viewing, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING fell into place for me.  I know that one really shouldn't HAVE to see a film more than once to understand it, but, with each viewing this series gets richer and more emotionally charged for me.  I break out into tears in the first two films with the advanced knowledge of what transpires in the third installment.

It's not even that I'm not a fantasy fan - hell, if you love musicals, you have to be a fan of fantasy - but, I think that Peter Jackson created a world of fantasy in his three films that is a very real, cinematic world, a world that I enjoy spending time in, whether in the theatrical or the extended (NOT director's) cuts.

AND. . .I watched the blu-ray of FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING up until the mid point last night (once the fellowship is formed in Rivendale) and I'm still waiting for the transfer to be lackluster. . .

Today let me just say that I would willing sit through both SHOWGIRLS and ARMAGEDDON rather than ever having to sit through LORD OF THE RINGS another time.

Maybe if you sat through THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy WITH ME, you'd have a very special viewing experience. . . .

DNR and edge enhancement are digital tools to remove noise and excess grain from the image and edge enhancement is sometimes use to artificially sharpen the image.  While some transfers have used both to excess, the phrases have become so abused and overused by everyone reviewing these things, and half the time what they're blaming on these things is the way the film actually looks.

JMK, I read his update and I read the message board.  I'm sorry but - just where did he view this theatrical print last night.  Since the film isn't playing anywhere, did he view it at someone's house - on what sort of projector, what kind of bulb or light source, what sort of screen.  And a 35mm release prints is a very different beast than a blu-ray transfer.  I see no evidence of what he calls "smearing" and I see no problems in the sky of the snow scenes, and I was watching for them.  Let him post screencaps that are direct unmanipulated caps of a shot right from the blu-ray in hi-def and let him point these things out - he won't be able to.  I am glad he begrudgingly upped his score and lowered his criticisms, but his nitpicking certain shots that may last for seconds is, for me, silly.

Erik Larson's DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY reads like fiction, don't discount it just yet.  His THUNDERSTRUCK is also a fine read, though not as memorable as DEVIL.

When I went down, I did indeed watch MAMMY. They have done a wonderful job with the restoration and remastering. It is by far the best looking of the Jolson titles and that includes THE JAZZ SINGER which was also remastered and restored.

Obviously Irving Berlin was pushing hard for "Let Me Sing and I'm Happy" to become a hit song (I am guessing that it did) since it's sung three times in the movie and featred in the overture and main titles and play out music.

I like this film much more than most of Jolson's star vehicles for Warners, much more than SAY IT WITH SONGS or THE SINGING FOOL (though it does have quite a few songs that I really love like "There's a Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder" is one example).

I next watched tonight's HUMAN TARGET, the season finale. Naturally there's a cliffhanger, and since the series hasn't been renewed for next season yet, that might mean that one of the characters stays kidnapped for all eternity!

But a good guest cast: Amy Aker, Lee Majors (who looks much better than he's looked in other guest star roles for the last few years), Amande Assante, and from PSYCH, Timothy Omudson.

Today has been a day of animal abuse:

I seem to have a summer cold - lots of sneezing and a stuffed up head (almost sounds like allergies except it goes away in a day)- so I called in and cancelled my 8:15 AM Rehab session, intending to stay in bed.

Well, before the sun was even full up, a female Cardinal was scolding me through the bedroom window (I hadn't been doing the birds or squirrels for a few weeks). So, I trundled out of bet and took some bird seed out to the feeder. I wasn't back in bed more than 10 minutes before a squirrel had climbed up to the naked corn cob on the feeder and started staring in the widow; I looked out, and damned if that little beast didn't put his two paws on the tired old cob, give it a hug, and give me a long, longing stare - so we make another trip outside.

Following posts are the picture evidence of the harassment.

If they were doing it as a film, they'd definitely cast bigger box-office film names in those parts, like Meryl Streep and Glenn Close, for example.

In addition to the Crow - who is a new comer - we had brief visits from Cardinals, Blue Jays, Tufted Titmice, and sparrows

I love your wildlife photos, DerBrucer.

I'm not sure they are "wildlife" - they are indigenous Sussex-Countians who are attempting to train the invasive species "homo sapien".

Love the squirrel photos, DerBrucer. My pet bird also loves ripping corn cobs to shreds. Got a floor full of kernels around me as I type this.

So seriously, did HHW already discuss the Tovah Feldshuh and Betty Buckley teaming in ARSENIC AND OLD LACE?

I hope Betty plays Teddy Roosevelt.
