Title: THE SATURDAY REPORT
Post by: bk on August 15, 2004, 12:02:05 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know the Saturday Report (even though it's Sunday) and now you are ready to post until the cows come home or, at the very least, to post until the cows have been reported.

I'm going to watch The Sopranos for a bit, then maybe even go to bed.

Great news, BK!  They like the show!  I just wish the opening night pictures were completely labeled with who is who...or is it "who is whom?"  Either way, it would've been nice if the reporter/photographer could've gotten everyone's names.  Oh, well.  They're pretty cool pictures. :)

You needed to know that.

Good Morning!

-It's amazing how many posts one has to catch up when one hasn't logged in over 12 hours!

;)

Good show tonight, as BK mentioned.  I would guess that the average age of the audience was about 50, BUT there probably was no one in the audience around that age!  Everyone was either in their early 20's.. or.. well, let's just say "older".  Everyone in the cast - including myself - also seemed be having a genuinely good time tonight - not that we haven't been having a good time this whole week.  But now that the stress and angst of the official opening night is over, we don't have to worry about having that pressure system over our heads.

Like DR PennyO mentioned, I like third nights too.

DR Panni - Thanks for the links to the pics.  So... Is/was that Bonnie Franklin in one of those pics?  Hmm...  Just wondering.

Well, it's been a long day for me.  I'm all set up in my nice new digs - and the extra train/Metro travel time wasn't too bad at all.  Note for this week: stock up on batteries for my CD player. ;)

Goodnight.

Quoth BK:
Quote
I have heard through the grapevine that the reviews from Friday night will be very mixed, in part, I believe, from the second act problems. I've heard the critics like the parodies and like the other material much less. I truly think it's because the revue form has been so subverted in recent years that no one really remembers what these were like in the good old days, which is the main reason I did it this way. I could panic and start changing things, but I find it best to have the courage of one's convictions and to hang tough.

Tone is so hard to discern on the internet, but, reading the above, I felt melancholy.  It sounds like you're reacting to reviews that haven't even been published yet.  Are you so sure your grapevine is accurate?  I think it very often happens that critics change their minds from when they leave the theatre to when they get to their keyboards.  I think it's best to wait until one's read actual published reviews to have any sort of reaction to them.  (Some would say: don't read them at all.)

Quote
What these critics seem to want is all comedy and that just didn't interest me. I've seen several all comedy revues and after six or seven comedy numbers in a row I'm just done - I can't laugh anymore no matter how good they are. As wonderful as some entries in Forbidden Broadway have been, I just grow weary at some point. I like having ballads and heartfelt numbers in between the comedy stuff - to me, it's a more rounded and interesting evening. As I've said all along, it's the way revues used to be

I'm SO in agreement with this, and marvel at what kindred spirits we are.  The revues I love have heartfelt ballads - I think of "I Furnished My One-Room Apartment" from Upstairs At O'Neals and "Friends" from A...My Name Is Alice.  The revues I've written - On the Brink, The New U., Spilt Milk and Lunatics and Lovers, all have slower tempo moments of real feeling, too.

All of this is to say that it sure sounds like I'd adore What If.  How I hope for an extended run - I may make it out west (again) for Christmas.

BK - Bring the show to NYC.  With the exception of the Billy Barnes shows, this is really the home of the revue and I think it will have a great reception here.  There really hasn't been a good revue here since "No Frills" in about 1988 or 89.  The last revue I saw --- "A Good Swift Kick" --- had poor material and meidocre performers.  New Yorkers need to be reminded of the kind of shows that Ben Bagley and Julius Monk used to do.

Reviews, be damned. If you're satisfied with your work and the work of your cast, if the show is playing as beautifully as you've described, and if you're selling tickets, forget what some reviewer has to say. Those of us who perform have probably had good reviews and bad reviews, but personally, I KNOW when I've done a good job and when I haven't. I don't need anyone else telling me what I already know. Also, no reviewer is going to be privy to the numerous circumstances that go together to make a show what it is. Knowing that makes any weaknesses understandable and bearable.

Frankly, I stopped reading reviews (and this coming from someone who used to write criticism) of shows I was a part of. They always made me mad, even if they were favorable, so I just stopped.

Can't wait to get to PENNIES FROM HEAVEN at some point this week. Miss Deanna Durbin kind of threw a wrench into my DVD plans, but once she's out of the way, I'll get to AMERICAN BUFFALO and PENNIES FROM HEAVEN, the next two DVDs in my line-up.

Good morning. Slept through the whole night. Rare and wonderful. I actually woke up feeling rested. Hooray.

I agree fully about trying to ignore reviews. Of course, I've never succeeded, but one really should. The problem is that they have so much power in terms of box office (I'm talking about the theater -- for movies, unless it's some little indie film no one has heard of and it suddenly becomes the darling of the press, reviews don't seem to make that much of a difference. A film can get horrible reviews and people will still see it in droves. ) But in the theater, one rave in the right place and suddenly people - paying audience type people - are interested. And the opposite is sadly true as well. Even for restaurants. I went to a place a  month or two ago that had just received a rave in the LA Times. The little joint was overflowing and there was even a TV crew there doing a news piece on the newest in-spot. Went back last week and it was DEAD. Like a different restaurant. The buzz was over.

DR PANNI - the same thing happens to people....ask Justin Guarini.

Hmmmmmmmm.....I thought that was Jack Klugman AND Bonnie Franklin!  But who are the two guys....one in a yellow shirt and one in an orange shirt....there are ENOUGH pictures of them!!!

Yes, reviews are someone's opinion....and I agree...if you are sure of your material and your show....it doesn't matter what anyone thinks.  The audience will always let you know....

Free for all day.....hmmmmmmmmmmm.....

At the end of August, Comcast has let me know that I will be losing my HBO and SHOWTIME unless I switch to digital cable.  I am not sure how I feel about this.  I don't watch a LOT of the premium channel programming, but I do watch SIX FEET UNDER and QAF...and a movie now and then.

I don't think I will switch right now....digital cable is MUCH more expensive.  I guess I will wait and see.

What is this converter box they are talking about?  My cable runs through my VCR right now....how would that work?  Does any DR use one of these things..........grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I'm enjoying the Olympics so far.  Although I'm hesitant to talk about specific events, because I know NBC shows much on tape delay.  That is one thing I love about the CBC's Canadian coiverage.  They show everything live.

I will say this, my favorite sports so far have been swimming, diving and rowing.  Although Canada has not faired too well so far (and I'm not even talking medals - in swimming yesterday they didn't even qualify for any finals or get close to their personal bests).

I just finished reading a two week old VARIETY that listed the death of the woman who played "The Torso" in REAR WINDOW. I meant to mention it last night, but I forgot about it.

The obituary said she was one of the last surviving cast members of REAR WINDOW.

Yep, I have a digital cable set-up, and all I can tell you is that in CHarlotte, you double or triple your channel options for aout the same money with digital cable. If you suscribe to HBO, we get ALL the HBO channels and if you get Showtime, you get ALL the Showtime channels for the same price I was paying for JUST single channel Showtime and HBO.

The picture quality was tremendously noticeable with digital cable with much sharper pictures and, of course, Dolby Digital 5.1 sound where available (if you connect the audio out from the cable box to your receiver.)

My digital cable service includes Music Choice, which is something like seventy channels of commercial free music 24/7 in any genre you can think of and then some.  My favorites are Showtunes, Singers and Standards, Big Band, Classical, Light Classical and Opera.  They also have something called Sounds of the Season, which I listen to during December.

That might be an incentive for you to convert, Dear Reader JRand.

The grapevine is my publicist.  However, I have no real intention of reading the reviews, I made that decision already.  I knew going in what I wanted to do and I knew that some people would not understand what the form is and that's perfectly fine.  If audiences are enjoying it (which they certainly seem to be) they will find us.  And I don't think we'll actually get any "bad" reviews, just mixed, and that's fine.  It's actually predictable here in LA because when I see what they give their raves to I just sit and scratch my head.

Speaking of A Good Swift Kick, that show started out here in LA (when it was called Both Barrels).  It was one of the prime reasons why I wouldn't and won't do a revue with all comedy.  While it had some decent material (none of it great) by the sixth song I didn't ever want to hear a comedy song again - my mind just shut down and I was through.

I slept nine-and-a-half hours.  It was nice to finally catch up on my sleep.  WHY was it nice to catch up on my sleep?  I don't like when up is on my sleep.

WHY was it nice to catch up on my sleep?  I don't like when up is on my sleep.

I NEVER catch up on my sleep. The little bugger always gets away from me. But sometimes I catch up on my work. It leaves ugly footprints all over the pages and makes me furious. When I'm furious I can run really fast. Which allows me to catch up. And is up ever sorry when I do!

The thing about the converter box is that you can't tape a digital channel and watch anything else.  You have to hook the cable from the wall into the digital box, from the cable box into the VCR, from the VCR into the TV.  I got digital cable because of a special but, as much as I loved the new channels and the digital music, I didn't watch/listen enough to justify the cost (I also have Internet access through cable, so that adds about another $45 to my bill).  If it were all a bit cheaper, I'd certainly consider it again.

A couple of days ago, DR TD was asking about the new Rebecca Luker CD, Going Home.  Der Brucer and I have it, and I've played it...once.

I can't blame Luker for wanting to do different material, stuff that she loves personally.  But, with the exception of "Wick," from Secret Garden, there wasn't anything on the disc that thrilled me.  This is a shame, because Luker has a wonderful voice.

I'm finding a lot of showcase discs being released by PS Classics to be of the "nice, but so what" variety.  It's almost a vanity label, with the artists deciding what is best for them (regardless of whether or not they are right).  So far, the only disc of theirs that I've really enjoyed is Lauren Kennedy's Songs of Jason Robert Brown, and she had the three-named genius himself working with her on the material.

I have been baking cookies.  That is where I have been.

The assistant manager at the store loves my cookies.  I took a small bag of them with me yesterday, for my lunch, and she stole one!  She wasn't at all ashamed of the theft, either!  She happily munched away, while telling me how much she loved the cookies.

So, since we were almost out of cookies, I've baked up a new batch.  I'll be taking her a bag today, in less than an hour.

Of course, while one sheet of the cookies were baking and another sheet was cooling, der Brucer stole a couple of the fresh cookies.

And that is the state of the art.

Here's a question for the rest of the DRs:

Have you ever had a job where you had to be "on call," where your employer "might" need you so instead of having a day off either you had to call in or they would call you?

I'm "on call" on Sundays, have been for the last few weeks.  It's supposed to be that I'm on call in case the store is flooded with customers, more than the usual Sunday staff of two can handle.  Instead, we're having trouble with one of the other clerks, who is having trouble finding a babysitter for her son.  (The kid is about six - shouldn't that be "ladsitter" instead of the demeaning "babysitter"?)  Last week she couldn't make it in at all, today she is leaving early.

It's good for me, because I get more hours (and pay) (and a good rep at work), but I'm feeling bad for the other clerk, because she's getting stuck with fewer hours (and a not-very-good rep).

Sleep?  Hmm.. Sleep!  -And I had a good night's sleep myself last night too.  HOWEVER, I'm actually wondering just how much I'll allow myself to sleep in tomorrow...???  It will either be one of those days where I end up getting up around 7:30-8:00am, and then having a semi-to-very productice day, or it will be one of those where I'll find myself looking at the clock radio... and it says it's already 2:30pm!  -It could happen!  -Hmmm.. RE: Being On Call - When I'm the "local sub" for a touring show, technically, I'm on call for the run of the show at that time.  Most of the time, there is already some sort of rotation schedule in place, and I'm given the go ahead to "not" show up at a certain performance(s).  However, emergencies do - and have - arisen, and I've received calls a few hours before curtain to come on in to play that evening.

*And depending upon the contract rider, sometimes I'm only paid for when I show up, but sometimes I'm paid as if I've played the whole week - regardless of how many - or few - of the shows I've played.

Well, I need to run an errand before the matinee... And I may be back late tonight since I may catch a movie with a friend in Hollywood after the show this afternoon.

Laters..

My father was an old fashioned GP.  He was always on call and we grew up with the knowledge any planned activity might not happen. Knowing someone was sick and needed him we were disappointed but understanding of the situation.  I do remember on occasion my father having to cancel our fun for a patient with a tendency to overreact but the majority of his house calls could be managed with a stop on the way.  Most often the calls happened at night.

Poor “other clerk”.  It has to be tough when need to work but can’t get a sitter.  I expect work will only tolerate the situation until the holiday rush begins.

I, too, have been indulging in large gobs of sleep this weekend.  It's very good to have the summer program behind me, and, while I've picked up two cabaret acts to do in the remaining weeks of August, neither is full length.  Each involve about six songs each, which is quite a relief after the two dozen songs in the two cabarets last week.

Feels as if I'm in one of those decompression chambers.

I hope to accomplish a lot of writing in the next month.  The new musical has no dead-line, for, at this point, there's no producer, and, in fact, no realistic hope that it will ever be produced.  But plenty of people who DON'T have the power to produce a musical of this size have told me they're very much looking forward to seeing a draft of it.  I soldier on, but with no must-be-finished-by-this-date sort of drive

I watched IT STARTED WITH EVE today, and the transfer was as beautiful as any of the Warner black and white DVDs that haven't been put through Ultra-Resolution like CASABLANCA or YANKEE DOODLE DANDY were. I didn't spot any blemishes. And the movie plays so wonderfully, and Charles Laughton is such a thorough scene stealer that's it's sheer pleasure in the viewing.

I also watched the OLIVER! segments on the Ed Sullivan/Beatles set. Great to see David Jones doing the Artful Dodger (he and Georgia Brown have great rapport together) since he didn't get to do the cast album, and the audience, even this one who were obviously there to cheer the Beatles, seems really into the perfomance, and Brown's brief version of "As Long as He Needs Me" seems to have brought down the house. The audience doesn't want them to stop. Heartening that a fundamentally rock and roll crowd could still find Broadway thoroughly entertaining.

That, Mr. Director (I'm talking to you, sir!), is a most appropriate and highly deserved change!  Glad you did it.

I feel better now that Panni has taken us to page three. I'm off to the post office in a few minutes (not just to take Magnus and Fosca for a ride in the car) to see if My Ship has arrived in port or whatever..

Magnus is already putting me under pressure and Fosca is wanting attention - they love their little journeys to the PO.

Back later - but not much!

DR Jane, join the Ebay club! As JRand53 and I can tell you Ebay is one addiction you will never want to give up! LOL!

Spent most of this afternoon lounging in the back yard with Freddy and finishing the book THE CAT WHO WILL LIVE FOREVER...the last of the wonderful trilogy by Peter Gethers. The final book was sad and touching but still made you feel so good about the people and pets who you surround yourself with and who touch your lives!

Hell, my name is George and I am an eBay addict.  (collective "Hello, George.")  I have gotten so many things at such cheap prices that it's amazing.  What's also amazing is when I first started eBaying, how much I thought I would be willing to pay for something, and REALLY glad when I got outbid at the last second.  At that time, there was no "watching" an auction.  You had to either remember what the auction was or just bid on it.  Which is what I did.  Now I try and only get the things that I really, really want...but I'm not yet at the point where I only get things that I really, really need. ::)

Which brings up an interesting topic: What is it that we really really need? I mean if you had to start life all over again somewhere far away where you could buy nothing other than food, what would you take with you? (Pets, of course, but other than that.)

I have discovered something really disgusting at work, a habit some customers seem to have that can only be replied to with the word "Eeeeewwwww!"

This disgusting thing is people leaving half-eaten food on our shelves.

(All together now: "Eeeeewwwww!")

I have no idea why people do things like this.  We have a sign in the front of the store, next to the door, that says "No food allowed in the store."  This sign is generally ignored, mainly because there is a Candy Kitchen store right across from ours, and their customers are an impatient lot.

So I regularly find bits of half-eaten foodstuffs on the shelves.

The only thing that could be worse would be if smoking were still allowed in the outlet mall stores.  Picking up other people's butts would really be...

No, not suggestive...

Something else, something nasty.

Bleh.

ALL OF MY RECORDS AND CDs!!!  THOSE are completely required (to me, at least)!!  AND my complete stereo system and my computer to make CDs of the records.  AND an appropriate power source.

However, if you're only talking about absolute necessities, I'd probably say a regular income and some sort transportation.  I think that most people truly could make due with just the absolute basic necessities if they had no choice.

S. Woody, there was a store in a local mall that used to have a sign that read:

"Food and drink are loved by all,
But please partake out in the hall.
"

I don't know if it made a difference, but they had it prominently displayed and festively decorated so that you couldn't miss it.  It certainly made me think about it.

May we assume that this somewhere, far far away (a Shrek reference) is relatively balmy and pleasant year-round?  Because otherwise we'd all have to pack a lot of clothes, and the younger we are, the more clothes we'll have to pack.

Or, of course, we could all run around starkers!   :D :o 8)

Some people, DR George, do not know how to read signs, or at least don't bother to read them.

Yesterday, co-worker Chris was telling me of a woman who had piled various kitchen gadgets on the cash-register counter, and kept rapping on top of a sign he had placed there.  "Will someone ring me up?" she kept saying, while rapping on the sign.  Chris, with a line of customers at the other register, was unable to help her.  She finally left in disgust, leaving all her gadgets on the counter (for Chris to put away later).

The sign she had been rapping on the entire time?  It read, quite clearly, "Register Closed.  Please use other register.  Thank-you."

I'm back from a very frustrating show.  The show itself was wonderful - a half-house but appreciative audience.  But when I walked in I was told the stage right speaker was out.  Now, I've been complaining about the sound for a week.  Everyone has been telling me it's this and it's that and I kept saying how can the level be right for one number and non-existent on the same person for their next number.  I kept positing that it had to be the speakers going out intermittently and everyone kept saying no.  Well, they were wrong and I was right.  I was disturbed, but we did a check and it sounded okay with just the stage left speaker - we checked our prerecorded CD and did a mic check on two actors.  The show began and I heard nothing coming from the mics.  I walked over to the booth and signalled our sound fellow to raise the level - I saw him do this but nothing happened.  At intermission I told him the sound was not happening, and he checked all the plugs and rebooted the system.  We got to the funniest moment in the show, the faux movie trailer, he pushed "play" on the CD player and nothing happened.  Why?  Because somehow in the time we heard the stage left speaker prior to the show and the show's beginning, the stage left speaker also gave up the ghost.  I had to announce to the audience we were having a sound problem and we went ahead to the next number.  It was all handled very smoothly.  After the show, I informed the house manager that the only acceptable postion was that there would be completely new speakers in the theater by Tuesday - so that I would have time to okay them, test them, and make sure our levels still work.  I said I would begin cancelling shows if they merely put bandaids on their current speakers, which are ancient.   We're paying a LOT of money for the three-show weekend we're doing, and I'm not paying for a theater with crappy out-dated un-checked equipment.  Tammy will insist that we not pay for the matinee performance, and since I've been complaining about this for a week (they finally took me seriously after opening night and began doing checks on the speakers) and they totally mucked up one of our shows, and also the fact that we had continual problems on our opening night (not that noticible to the audience but definitely there) and also the Friday and Saturday performances, that she is due a substantial refund on our first week.  Hopefully they will do the right thing.

Surprise!  I am here again.

Free-for-all- Sunday......... let me see.

When I heard that Fay Wray had died, it started me thinking (well, I can't use the computer at work, so I have to do something!).  Despite a very long and interesting career, it is quite obvious that Miss Wray will be forever linked to KING KONG.  There is nothing really wrong with that, but it started me thinking of what other actors will be forever linked to one film for all eternity.  I am not asking for people to name their favorite film role for a particular actor, but rather that one film that (good or bad) will forever define their career.  **Let's face it, if President Reagan had not chosen a second career in politics, how many obits would have been headlined 'BEDTIME FOR BONZO' STAR PASSES?

Now this little exercise in "brainstorming" will require several of our more advanced film buffs, to put aside their uncanny grasp of film trivia, and to look at this topic as Mr. and Mrs. Film-goer see things.

The first couple I came up with were:

Fay Wray -- KING KONG
Keir Dullea -- 2001, A SPACE ODYSSEY
Al Jolson -- THE JAZZ SINGER (Okay, without cheating name another Jolson film and JOLSON SINGS AGAIN does not count.)
Jennifer O'Neill -- SUMMER OF 42

Anybody else have some others???

That was the headline in the paper I read, but I only peruse those liberal rags, don't you know.   ;)

Bo Derek - 10
Tatum O'Neill - Paper Moon
Carrie Snodgrasss - Diary of a Mad Housewife
Nick Apollo Forte - Broadway Danny Rose
Dr. Haing S. Ngor - The Killing Fields

Upon hearing of the death of chef Julia Child, I had the rather perverse thought, "The death of a Child is always a tragedy."

I got my laserdisc player free from a video store that was selling off all it's laserdiscs.  I asked if they were going to sell it and they said that I could have it for free!  It works perfectly except that when you open the drawer to put in the disc, it closes (whether you want it to or not) after about three seconds.  When switching sides, I have to open the drawer, take out the disc and let the drawer close.  THEN I have to re-open the drawer, carefully put in the disc...making sure that it's seated properly...and then let it close again.  Once you get used to it, it's not a problem.  AND it plays quite well. :)

It took me only three sittings to read that!  I honestly could not put it down, since the author ends each chapter with a cliff-hanger of a sentence or situation.
I enjoyed it tremendously, then waited a few weeks to read THE DA VINCI CODE which, while not really a letdown, contained so much information that I had already know from other Grail writings; so I was left only with the whodunnit.

Good Evening!

BK talked about this matinee today, already, so...

As soon as I had packed up all my stuff at theatre and started walking up to Hollywood and Vine, I could just feel all the "stuff" of the past week catch up with me.  At first I thought I just needed some food.  Well, I got some food.  I felt a little better after getting something in my stomach and system, but still not as good as I thought I would/should feel.

Then came the Metro ride back... As soon as I sat down in the train, I almost started to nod off immediately.  Hmm.. I guess I must be tired.  Well, there was no guessing about it.  I was tired.

On the way back from the Metro, I stopped at Whole Foods just to pick up something a bit more substantial for my dinner.  Then it was back "home", ate my dinner, watched some of the Olympics... Then I woke up about an hour later in front of the TV.

And now I'm here...

So, now I'm listening to Verdi's I Vespri Sicialini (Ricardo Muti, conducting, recording) on the radio, and I'm trying to decide whether I should decide whether or not to plan my day tomorrow... Or just see what time I end up waking up and take it from there.  I do know that I have to take some time over the next two days to check on "real life" things that I may have overlooked over the past week or so - let's say, for instance: bills!  -ugh.  And if the mail gods are looking over me, the package that Steve sent from Richmond with about five weeks' worth of mail in it, should be here Tuesday morning... And it will most likely take me a few hours to go through all of that.

I also found out that two professional acquaintances of mine are appearing at the Hollywood Bowl this week.  I just sent e-mails out to them, and, hopefully, they'll be able to set me up with a ticket or two.  If not, I won't be too disappointed.  But if things work out, I will definitely be excited.  *Of course, the one program I'd really like to see and hear this week is Bernstein's "Mass" - which, of course, is on Thursday night... Hmmm.. Do I have an understudy?  ;)

-Just kidding, BK.

Really.

I like ONJ! I'm disappointed, though about two things:
1.  Her song "The Tree" used over the closing credits of IT'S MY PARTY wasn't Oscar nominated.
2.  Her DUETS album is STILL not available in the U S of A.

Speaking of The Hollywood Bowl, and DR Jose just was, are any dear readers planning to go to THE LORD OF THE RINGS SYMPHONY there, (did it already happen?) when Miss Susan Egan is the guest soloist?
I heard Sissel as the guest vocalist when Mr. Howard Shored conducted it here in Pittsburgh.

Both Jose and I forgot to mention that I changed his curtain call last night and he now leaves the piano and bows with the company's final bow.

Thank You, BK!

Happy news and we must have a photo of this! :)

Thank You, Jane!

A much deserved bow, may I add! He does a great job.

Köszönöm szépen, Panni!

I guess I was being modest earlier by not acknowledging my new bow.  -Which I do like very much.  Thanks again, BK.

I also like the chance it gives me to applaud the cast too!

Of course, today - after such a weird show - when it came time for my bow, I started to think, "Hmmm... Do I bow at the piano and then come up to the cast? or Do I go up to the cast, and bow from there? or Do I bow here and there? or..."  I think I eventually made some sort of bow, but it was one of those times when just a few seconds seemed like more than just a few seconds.

Well, I think I'm going to settle back in front of the TV for a bit - catch some more of the Olympics, and then the news.  Oh, and maybe some ice cream!  I picked up a package of some Green Tea mochi ice cream bon-bons at Trader Joe's yesterday.  Nice little "bites" of green tea ice cream enclosed in a rice flour "wrapper" - trust me, it tastes a lot better than how I'm describing it.  And it's one of the few ice cream treats where I'm truly just satisfied eating one... well, maybe two.  -Hey, a complete "serving" is three according to the package!  So there!!

Be back before heading to bed...

I found out what a dickens is:
dickens - (what the dickens, in dickens' name, hurts like the dickens, etc) - Dickens is another word for devil, and came to be used as an oath in the same way as God, Hell, Holy Mary, etc. Brewer (dictionary of phrase and fable 1870) explains that the 'dickens' oath, is a perversion (variation) of, and derived from 'Nick' and 'Old Nick'. The dickens expression appeared first probably during the 1600's. The etymology of 'nick' can be traced back a lot further - 'nicor' was Anglo-Saxon for monster. The devil-association is derived from ancient Scandinavian folklore: a Nick was mythological water-wraith or kelpie, found in the sea, rivers, lakes, even waterfalls - half-child or man, half-horse - that took delight when travellers drowned. Beginning several hundred years ago both protestant and catholic clergy commonly referred to these creatures, presumably because the image offered another scary device to persuade simple people to be ever god-fearing (".....or Old Nick will surely get you when you next go to the river...") which no doubt reinforced the Nick imagery and its devil association. So too did the notoriety of Italian statesman and theorist, Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) - (who also gave rise to the expression 'machiavellian', meaning deviously wicked). 'Nick' Machiavelli became an image of devilment in the Elizabethan theatre because his ideas were thought to be so heinous. Shakespeare has Mistress Page using the 'what the dickens' expression in the Merry Wives of Windsor, c.1600, so the expression certainly didn't originate as a reference to Charles Dickens as many believe, who wasn't born until 1812. Charles Dickens' fame however (he was extremely famous in England while alive and writing as well as ever since) would certainly have further reinforced the popularity of the 'dickens' expression.

Turandot was OK.  Not bad, but I wasn't transported, either.

Between John Mauceri's conducting and the amplification system at the Bowl, this was a rather soft-edged Turandot and I like my Turandot with hard edges.

Andrea Gruber was the Turandot and Richard Margison the Calaf.  Just as when she appeared in the role at the L.A. Opera two years ago, Hei-Kyung Hong was the vocal standout as Liu.
