Well, you've read the notes, you are now in a Mexican Mood, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently south of the border down Meheeco way.

And the word of the day is: HABERDASHER!

Seems I've been logged on to HHW for hours without realizing it. While I'm here, let me say...

Hey, Lar, good vibes for your trip to Ohio!
I'm listening to WMKV Radio in Ohio right now. I don't have any CDs at the office so I think it will be Internet radio all day.
We have the second series of Mapp and Lucia to watch. I don't know if we will get through all 6 episodes but we may. We also have some videos taken out of the library, The Guardsmen, a mocumentary by Peter Jackson about a discovery of a "lost" silent film called Forgotten Silver and a couple of others. I forget the titles.
The phone man is supposed to come and look at our static/interference problem. Unfortunately, the super hasn't unlocked the door to the basement so the repairman can go downstairs. He has until 10am.
The Irving Berlin exhibit was very nice. Small enough to see easily and full of great pieces of music and photographs.
Looking forward to tomorrow's Bodies exhibit.
-
Good morning, all! Thank you for the travel vibes. I have about 3 hours to kill, so I will run a few neighborhood errands, most likely repack, rethink the books I'm taking, reevaluate the work I elected to bring along: BABES IN TOYLAND libretto edits and a Hanukka choral arrangement. I should be at La Guardia shortly before noon.
Yes, DR MBarnum, I should be able to post every day but Sunday. I will post semi-regularly from the computers at the public library, where I shall appropriate a table for my workdesk.

I don't think I've watched anything this week, or listened to anything.

Speaking of Cinco de Mayo, it's something that some people don't do here in Delaware.
A couple of customers, when writing their cheques to pay their bills, asked me what the date was. "It's May 4th, the day before Cinco de Mayo," I replied.
"What's that?" they asked (each in their turn, not simultaniously).
"It's sort of the Mexican version of Independence Day," I replied.
Believe it or not, both ladies (in separate incidents) blinked, and then asked "Are YOU Mexican???!!!"
"Uh, no, but I'm from California."
The first lady laughed at that.
I wish the second lady had laughed. Instead she went into a short rant against illegal immigrants. I didn't like her as much. I guess she didn't realize that, without said immigrants, most of what she had just bought wouldn't have been in her shopping cart, at least not for the low price she had just paid.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR GEORGE!!!

Hopefully the DVD Debacle will have been completed and DECEIT will be ready for viewing by MR BK on Cinco de Mayo!

I finshed listening to the GOLDEN BOY CD (ported over from the original LP onto a CD by DR George), and I must say that Sammy's voice wasn't in nearly as bad a shape as I thought it would be.
Yes, his middle and lower registers are a bit hoarse, but just a bit, and his upper register is unaffected, other than maybe a tendency not to sustain notes for very long.
Amazing clout he must have carried to get Capitol to redo his most of his vocals and to reissue the LP with the new stuff (and the addition of the instrumental "The Fight" and the loss of the original LPs "Finale." The original vocals would certainly have been fine for a remembrance of the show.
I'll bet folks like Paul Wallace (on GYPSY) and Ron Holgate (on 1776) would LOVED to have been able to redo their vocals on their original cast albums. Of course, they did the film versions and recorded their music in excellent voice then.

Hello from Shiloh Inn of Vancouver WA! At more than twice the price, the bed was no better... but they have coffee IN THE ROOM!!! AND WIRELESS INTERNET!!! Not really worth the extra $$$, but I drove around this burg for nearly 20 minutes looking for a place to camp, and when I rolled in here, I just didn't want to roll another mile.
There is an ironing board and iron - wish I had something to spruce up! Thee is a hair dryer - would be great if I still had all that hair...
They provide free shampoo and conditioner. Well, THAT's nice!
There is a free breakfast buffet - ah, if only one ATE...
No sleep timer on the TV - this was a serious drawback.
Scoring: Most of the Shiloh 'amenities' - wasted on a guest like moi; Internet - Shiloh wireless vs. Motel 6 dial-up: equal ease and convenience; bed: equal on the AWFUL scale. TV - Motel 6 had a timer. Price: Motel 6 cost less than half. Guess where Aunt Penny will be staying most of the time she goes on the road without an expense account???
-
GEORGE!!! Happy Birthday, Dear Boy! I'll be whizzing by your neighborhood on my way to the cabin this morning, and wishing you all the very best. And it will be so nice to finally meet you next weekend!
I had a swell visit with Jane and Keith yesterday. Jane and I had a lovely walk along the stream, through the forest, to the lookout over the valley where cattle grazed peacefully in the sun. And everywhere the lemony green of another spring. I missed most of the Lassner daffodils, but was in time for some amazing tulips - bright crimson with yellow markings, some of the biggest, fattest tulips I ever saw! And the house looks so beautiful - the new cabinets and granite counters in the kitchen, the breakfast bar, all the small details - well, it sure has taken long enough!! The wonderfullest thing about that house: the rooms are huge, but you never get a feeling other than cozy, easy, intimate. Must have something to do with the people who live there and make it a home...

POINTS TO PONDER
Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one ofthem, what do you call it?
If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"

Just got this notice for those who expressed interest a few weeks ago:
On Saturday, May 6th, 5.00pm ET on Animal Planet watch the Twentieth Anniversary Genesis Awards TV Special, produced by the Hollywood Office of The Humane Society of the United States. The Genesis Awards honors the news and entertainment media for raising awareness of animal issues and will provide some great examples of “animal content in entertainment.”
I've been given conflicting stories on when it's on PT. I've been told both 2 (which is what it says on the TV Menu and the TV Guide -- and makes sense in terms of ET) -- but have also been told 5. Have no idea which is correct.

I can't overstate (or, frankly, mention enough) the positive effect of a product being associated in some way with the Bruce Kimmel name in theater circles. It happened again the other night, after The Gig, that I was telling a theater notable that the CD of Last Starfighter was out on the market, and got a blase reaction (like everybody's got a CD) until I mentioned that it was on Bruce Kimmel's new label, and there was a clear increase in interest in what I was talking about.

Miss Jessica Rush has just left, and I'm on the phone with the post production place seeing if my DVDs are ready.

For those who watch it, tonight is the second part of last week's GHOST WHISPERER. And i think it's the season finale. Last week was very chilling, so I can't wait to see tonight's show.

Hope you feel better DR George!
-
Really ran the gamut of sensibilities in this afternoon's video offerings. I started with last night's MY NAME IS EARL. Funny story of Earl making amends for having shot a girl in the butt with a BB gun. Very enjoyable.
-
What a crummy day to not feel at your best. Hope your tummy feels better, DR George.
-
Next came last night's CSI. It was a less than thrilling case of a man murdered while enjoying a fantasy vacation gift from his movie-producer employer. This one case did manage to involve the entire team, something that rarely happens on CSI any more.
-
Next, I watched the Billie Jean King documentary from HBO. I grew up during Billie Jean King's triumphant march through women's tennis, so much of this was very nostalgic to me. I liked the documentary very much.
-
Finally, I ended my afternoon viewing with TRAINING DAY. I picked this off my to-watch shelf even though it's been sitting there for a couple of years. I read recently that this is one of the films coming out soon on HD-DVD, and like THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, I wanted to see how the image quality looked in standard defintion. Marvelous, quite frankly, but this gritty, kinetic tour through the first day of a rookie's indoctrination into street life on the LA narcotics squad is all over the emotional map.

Now playing in my head:

Lunch actually went well. I ordered two enchiladas with rice and beans. I ate the beans and a little rice and one of the enchiladas. Happy Birthday George. I'm having a nice time in Philadelphia, the weather is great. I'm afraid I've been on my feet way too much, however. I'm right back where I was pain wise....boo.. but I've seen most of the touristy things I wanted to see, so I guess I'll just have to sit back and have a drink!

Well, it seems as if our phone problem is fixed. While we still have dial-up we no longer have terrible static which made it hard to hear anyone calling and made it difficult to connect on-line or stay on-line when connected. Verizon did a good job! I commend Clive and his co-worker

The phone man is supposed to come and look at our static/interference problem.
Ah, I think I used to have that one on video.
-
So, I pop in the DVD and the very first shot (lightning outside a window) is missing. Brilliant. So, we have to go back in this evening and fix it. Unbelievable. I'm so over this video and I so want it to be finished. Otherwise, all our fixes look great. What doesn't look great is the anamorphic DVD - it's just not done correctly, and my DVD authoring guy says to do it properly would probably take two days, and frankly I'm just done and will live with the 4.3 letterboxed image (which people can zoom to fill widescreen TVs) - plus, I just don't know that we'd gain any quality doing anamorphic (properly done) because it's not shot in hi-def and the quality of the photography, while good, isn't perfect because of the stage lighting. But, we're going to do a little test tonight, just to see.
-
I am sorry to hear about your DVD woes BK

More on the elusive Genesis Awards show. This just in:
"We have just received, at this late date, reports that the Genesis Awards
will air at different times on the west coast depending on where you live
and what cable company you have. We know it will air at either 2:00pm or
5:00pm but you will have to check either your TV Guide Channel, Tivo or call
your cable company to find out for sure what time it will air for you.
Unfortunately you can't rely on the printed listings because they were
probably printed weeks ago and may have the wrong time listed."
Go figure!

Exciting times here in OZ. I've been invited to a birthday party tomorrow (Sunday).. For a 12 year old.
The son of my nephew. His given names are Thomas John. I suspect it's worth a try for the inheritance.
-
His great great great great great great great (Yes 7)grandfather was Thomas. (b. 1740 Aberdeenshire Scotland).
Don't you love Family trees.
-
A leaf from family tree has made it to page 5.

Maria, you are a writer............... write something.
Okay... There's a church and also a Catholic school two streets away from my house. I love the proximity of the church because the bells play beautiful tunes several times a day - particularly on Sunday (natch). HOWEVER, the school is having some sort of fair for the next three days. I just went by there while walking the Wonderdog and saw that the entire schoolyard has been transformed into a midway -- rides, games, you name it. There's also a bandshell with a LIVE BAND. They're playing earblasting rock non-stop. The sound carries as though they were in my backyard. And they are driving me crazy! (Not a long drive. Credit: bk)
As TCB noted (and this is where we came in) I is a writer. and I needs me peace and quiet so I can WRITE. Skammen!

Friday evening greetings from lovely Wooster, Ohio. We arrived in time for the full afternoon of presentations. Tonight there was a reception, then dinner meeting for the board (which I'm on). After that, one of the local people loaded her van with several of us who wanted to visit the local independent bookstore, The Wooster Book Company. It was a delightful store, but had two cats and I'm very allergic. I bought The Time Traveller's Wife.
I think it'll be an early night, because our day starts at 7:45am tomorrow, goes until 5pm, then we're driving back to Middletown - about 3 hours or a little more.

Mr BK - Adam will be in LA from May 18-23....so if you can check your schedule for the best couple of days a lunch might be arranged, I will let him know...and email you his cell phone number.
He is staying with friends, but I am not sure of the location....

Uh oh - Stacy's collecting rocks for the patio.
-
I found that as I was eating, everything was okay, but a little while after I stopped, the nausea returned. I guess I'm just going to have to ride it out and hope that it ends...AND SOON!
Sounds like morning sickness - we might have another first for HHW!

UPDATE: Might have known TCB would get there first!

I would bake youa cake...
Is their a recipe for "Youa Cake"?

Finished TRAINING DAY first off tonight. Exciting film, but the writer pulls out one doozy of a coincidence and thus lost my enthusiasm for the film about 3/4 of the way through. It's a flashy performance for Denzel Washington, and one can see why the Oscar voters went with it, but subtle it ain't.

Tonight we went out to dinner, had great strong margaritas, then walked around town & did a bit of shopping. My WICKED shirt I wore (Danise, remember? ;D) attracted a bit of attention, prompting a fun discussion with a very nice local resident.
Michael in Ashland, I hope you are lurking, soon to be posting. :) I’m sure everyone here would enjoy meeting you as I did.

Next up was THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE, the original Vivien Leigh version. Looks wonderful, and it's an entertaining movie. I had only seen it once before many years ago on a black and white TV, so seeing it widescreen and in color made it almost like watching a new film.
I have to say that the Helen Mirren remake done for Showtime (I think) was more faithful to the book (though it's been 20 years since I read it), and I think I preferred it overall to this first version, but that doesn't make this one any less entertaining. And that ending in the Leigh version is so much more enigmatic than in the remake.

Not wanting to dive into SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH tonight knowing I couldn't finish it, I pulled out another Tennessee Williams opus I hadn't watched in awhile: SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER. Got through Hepburn's insanely long opening monologues right to the intrusion into the proceedings of Mercedes McCambridge and her brood.
-
Then watched tonight's CONVICTION. Saw the marvelous Reiko Ailesworth do a terrific job with a psychotic defense attorney/client character, 180 degrees from her dedicated, loving Michelle Gessler on '24.'

The rain finally got here, but they should have gotten all of the players in the PGA tournament that's taking place here this weekend through their second rounds.

Matt:
Have you an opinion on Blue-Ray vs HD-DVD?

Maybe you're pregnant?

Hiya, George! Hope you're feeling better now - after DESSERT!!! See you soon, bucko!
I'm writing from my lovely little cabin on the stream in the woods - as soon as I showed up, I was set upon by my flock - YES, A FLOCK - of blue jays - screaming - Hey, Lady! Yeah, YOU!!! Where the $%^#^& are the peanuts???
So I went to the larder and brought out the metric ton o' peanuts which I keep for them. Every morning, they bang their beaks against my window, until I rise and bring the FOOD!!!
I'm pretty tired after my drive - probably head off to bed in a few minutes. I have put the cat food out for the raccoons... yes, I've turned into one of those little old ladies...
-
I wish!!
I'll bet you wish "I wish!" ::)
-
Yo, Brucer!! Yo, Ozman!!!
-
Well, off I go - sun comes up so early at this latitude... just went down actually.
-
And so, good night, my sweet princes.

Have you an opinion on Blue-Ray vs HD-DVD?
der Brucer
Have yet to see Blu-Ray, so I can't offer an opinion on quality. I suspect, they'll be equal in quality with HD discs looking superb and up-converted standard discs also being excellent. HD-DVD in first generation models is 50% cheaper than the cheapest Blu-Ray machine is going to cost at start-up. Blu-Ray discs have more capacity than HD-DVD discs, but as long as a disc has the movie and the extra features of the standard definition releases, who cares about that the space?
Blu-Ray has more studio support than HD-DVD, but if HD-DVD is successful, the other studios will come onboard.
Right now, it's just too early to call a winner especially since the second player in the contest hasn't climbed into the ring yet.
Of course, LG (Zenith) wants to sell a combination player that will handle both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. That would be the way to go, of course, but that player is months and months down the road.

Hi all, had a great day in Philadelphia sightseeing and enjoying the weather. Tonight we had a reception at the Constitution Center followed by a fabulous dinner at Morimoto - as in The Iron Chef. We had a private room and the food just didn't stop coming. I can't even tell you everything we had but it was truly delightful.
-
And now, I'm off to bed.
Good night, everyone!
-
And I learned that saki is to be served chilled and not heated. I had no idea.
-
But before I go, . . . . . .
Page Six Ichabod Crane Dance!!!

Back from another endless evening in the editing room, and I tell you, dear readers, I am now having a nuclear meltdown in the home environment. I basically watched the output, and now have to watch a new DVD of it over the weekend - however, the time code on the digi-beta is once again screwy because of the way the letterbox mattes were put on, so we cannot edit any fixes onto it - while it was going down, my editor and I saw two little shots we wanted to fix, and now we cannot fix them without re-outputting the whole damn thing again on Monday, which we'll probably do, at which point I will have to watch yet another DVD to approve - at which point we'll make the anamorphic copy, at which point I'll have to watch that, too, and I tell you my brain cannot process any more Deceit on top of all the other crap I've been dealing with this last week. There, I've vented. And the other crap is now so getting to me in a negative way that I am about to end a years-long and very close friendship.
-
I hope tomorrow is a better day, BK.
-
While I catch up, and while George is still here, and while it is not yet midnight on the West Coast, I want to say...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEORGE!!!! One of the late-night crew I always enjoy reading here on HHW.
-
Thanks Rodzinski! ;D
-
Well, it's time for me to go. I'm house-and-cat-sitting until a week from Monday (another 10 days). The way I feel right now (but getting better!), I just want to sleep in my bed.
Good night.
-
Good Night, Birthday Dude!

Here's to a pleasant stay in the cabin for Miss PennyO.
-
At work, I've been working on the program for OF THEE I SING, finishing the season of City Center Encores performances. Victor "Alias" Garber will be the lead. It's chock-full o' tunes.
-
TPunk and I met up after work, had some Turkish food, and walked up to where my pal's old-timey jazz band was playing. The Monkeyshine 9.
A pleasant Friday.
-
George bailed, Pogue's in a new time zone, BK's working on the notes I guess, DakotaCelt is nowhere to be seen. Tomovoz, et tu mate?
All alone am I with just the beat of my heart.
Guess I'll wait to see what's cooking in the notes. Bound to be some harsh words in there involving editing and anamorphizing and that ghastly stuff.

Hello Rodzinski

Brenda Lee! Partner Colin just purchased a DVD of her show which we have yet to watch. Sweet Nothings.
