From the X rated topic the other day, I forgot to mention my favorite X rated movie title ever: Hannah Does Her Sisters.

And as I was driving down Santa Monica Blvd. on Tuesday, I passed by the TomKat movie theater (formerly a Pussycat, now a gay movie house) - first off, I was shocked that there are any adult movie houses left, given the Internet and DVD - who knew?  And would you like to know the name of the film playing?  A Rim With A View.

Hard to go past "The Kid" and "The General" as classics of Silent Cinema.

Good morning, all!  My day is centered around the apartment since I have my Macintosh Man arriving at 10 to tune up the eMac.  I will finish the second third of the Dance Medley for the Chorus, and hopefully take a trip to Toyland after the computer's back to its sparkling self.   There may be a bit of banking to be done as well.

For those of you able to listen (if you haven't already), Donald's show this week is lots of fun. He interviews Michael Kostroff, an actor from the national tour of Producers and Les Miz. He (Kostroff) wrote a book about his time on the road. It's a good listen.

There's a lot of controversy over how to thicken a good New Orleans gumbo.  Some people will tell you "You bettah use the okra, fool!" while others will reply "No, no, you gotta use the file, buster!"

(File, pronounced "fee-lay."  It's made from powdered sassafras leaves.)

I have to say that the Garbo silents I find very resistable. I watched LOVE and THE FLESH AND THE DEVIL and THE TEMPTRESS agog because I couldn't believe how uninvolving and static they were. I much prefer her in some of her sound films.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a DOuglas Fairbanks silent picture all the way through. I've seen parts of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, THE BLACK PIRATE, THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD, ROBIN HOOD, but I don't think I've ever seen any of them all the way through. That's something I must put on my to-see list.

I read yesterday that CBS' sister network, UPN, might pick up the remaining episodes of LOVE MONKEY to show during this season. (I had previously read CBS might burn them off ths summer).

If UPN runs them, and they do decently in the ratings there, LOVE MONKEY might get picked up for the new CW network for the fall. It's a small, slight chance, but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Danise update. :)

She sounds great, had bacon eggs and oatmeal for breakfast.  She and her roommate are taking 15 minute walks every hour.

The surgery went well but was far more involved than expected so she will be in the hospital at least one more night.

If anyone wants to call Danise at the hospital email me and I will give you the phone number.  She would love it.

The PWOJECT WUNWAY reunion show was interesting last night.  And I sort of liked the Jay McCarroll show afterwards, sort of.

Now for the rest of the news FWIW:

On Tuesday I got my copy of the RENT dvd.  I did NOT like the OBC CD....played it once, not all the way through, haven't opened it since.  Didn't see the tour when it came through town.  BUT, hold your hats and hallelujah - I thought the movie was okay.  I liked most of it.  I think it's because I really liked the cast.  So while I am not a RENT fan, I will watch again....although at 130 minutes, it's a bit long.

SECOND SHOCKER:

I saw some of AMERICAN IDOL as I was shifting between the Olympics and the P/R shows....and I saw a singer I liked.  His name is Elliott!  Good luck....

Hiya, Jane. Thanks for the Danise report. Let her know we all wish her HOME ASAP!!! The hospital is no place for someone under the weather...

Okay, so yesterday I was just so fed up! I NEED work! I NEED something to do, drat it! So I scoured the Actors Equity casting page, and found something only a four-hour round trip away for today - MENOPAUSE, THE MUSICAL. They want to see ONLY women 35-55, size 10 and up. So, of course I phoned for an appointment for today at 12:40.

I hopped in the ol' Honda and raced to the library for a book of songs from the 50's, and selected Only You. Once home, I sang through it twice, until my voice failed. Oy, this cough... Then I ransacked my limited wardrobe for layers of clothes I could put on to Beef Up. (Producers hate it when they specify "Asians, only" or "minimum height 5'8" - and they have to sit through umpteen auditions with people who obviously aren't what they are looking for...).

My sister came home and found me wearing three gathered skirts, a cable knit sweater under a large overblouse, and one of her bras, stuffed with all my sweat socks... "What is this, Halloween??" I explained my dilemma, and she spent the next hour helping me create an outfit that was a little more - ummmm... fashionable. With accessories.

So this morning I woke, knowing that if I were called for a callback and it came out that I am really a size 2, those folks would hate me, and NEVER hire me for ANYTHING, even if I were right for it... I guess I'm not making the four-hour round trip today - but at least I was able to entertain myself a little yesterday. Actors are SO demented...

You liked the movie because of the cast?  Did you know that six of the eight actors were in the original Broadway cast??  You might want to give the OBC recording another try.  At least, you could find out what the movie left out (a couple of songs and little bits here and there).

On IDOL, Elliott was fine, but Simon's extravagent praise was a bit much, I thought.

Due to Constantine and Bo from last year, they seem much more open to male rock vocalists this year. There are several in the semi-finals. Not my favorite kind of voice, of course, but it's nice to have the diversity, and they all did their thing well last night.

Other than Sway and Bobby, who I found hopeless, only the very young Kevin seemed out of his depth, and Kevin's voice was OK. He just had no stage presence at all, no personality behind the voice.

I had the exact same reaction to RENT - show versus movie. I found the show pretty hard to take. The movie went down much easier. I think the sound level in the movie theater was perfect for the film. In the legit theater, I had blood pouring from my ears from the outrageous sound levels they ramped the music up to.

Speaking of Rent MattH, NDSU library has a book about the musical and I was looking through it last night... I will have to check the local Blockbuster to see if they have it.

DRJane, thanks for the updates on Danise and I am glad to hear that she is doing well.

As for the topic of the day I have seen a number of silents but only a few titles come to mind at the moment:

Potemkin
Birth of a Nation
and a few Buster Keaton movies
and a Mary Pickford film but the name escapes me at this moment.

The Fargo Theatre has Silent movie nights every once in a while and they have a person playing on their huge Wurlitzer organ. It is neat to listen to that...

Thanks, all, for the good audition vibes!

About that size 2 stuff - yes, I am amazed to see my tiny clothes come out of the dryer - they look like doll clothes. I never FEEL "small" - I am Miles Gloriosus in my mind...

MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL is going up everywhere in the past year - the audition notice for the one in Portland asks for women size 8 and up -- the one I saw here in LA had women of four different sizes, and the one who played the aging soap star was only slightly bigger than I am...

Let's hope the folks at North Coast Rep think I'd be perfect for all 5 characters in their coming show... I would LOVE to see a small actress come in for those parts... means they could use more than wigs - as in, costumes with different "bodies" sewn in for the different characters: a fat-suit in it for the Jewish Mama, a big bust and rear end for the Italian tango dancer, the barfly could be emaciated, etc.

Thanks, all, for the good audition vibes!

About that size 2 stuff - yes, I am amazed to see my tiny clothes come out of the dryer - they look like doll clothes. I never FEEL "small" - I am Miles Gloriosus in my mind...

I have the opposite problem... until I was 31 and I ghad to have my thyroid removed I could eat all I wanted and never was bigger than a "junior 5 "

Since the thyroid went bye bye, size fives became a distant memory but I think of myself as thin (l I am shocked when I  see myself in the mirror or in photos)

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I've actually been up since 10:00... ;)

-But then had to get right in gear for a small recording session here at my apartment.  A friend of mine needed some songs put down for a dance clinic he's giving this weekend... And his wife also needed a rehearsal CD for her musical theatre class... So...

Thankfully, they just needed a single track - piano - and Garage Band is mercifully easy to use.  We got through everything in a very leisurely two hours.  -Of course, we only had about 20 minutes of music to record, but I think we got some good tracks down.  "Theses are only for rehearsal and reference purposes, right?"

;)

-And that's what I've been doing with my day so far.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a silent movie all the way through either.

However, I do remember major snippets of "City Lights", "Nosferatu", and "Metropolis".

Jose, I'm doing laundry after work tonight. I often do it on Friday after work so we have the full weekend to ourselves but I'm seeing Barefoot in the Park tomorrow with my theatre buddies. I'm intrigued only because the show has gotten such mixed to awful reviews. Anthony has dance class tonight.

I'm looking forward to the March line up at Chelsea. The Bad Seed with Hedda and company. Even better, The Women with Hedda and company. Since Thursday night dance classes have resumed Anthon will most likely miss the Chelsea Classics nights unless he can be persuaded to skip a night of dance for a night of fun at the movies.

Back from class and tape pickup and delivery.  Very tired.  Class was fun again.  Tammy's friend Lauren sang and she's got a terrific voice and takes notes very well.  I've got one gal who's having terrible trouble - on Tuesday she was so nervous she couldn't remember her lyrics.  So, I let her have two days.  Today, she was so nervous she could barely breathe and get through the song, and still forgot a couple of words.  The song is They Were You, from the Fantasticks - a fairly easy and simple song.  Once I explained to her that most of the words in the song are short and didn't have to be held, that helped her.  She did it a second time - less nervous, but then got very emotional in the song, for reasons of her own.  I told her she'd sing again next Tuesday and when she's rehearsing to pick an image of someone she cares about and sing it directly to that mental image, sans the over-emotion - simple and heartfelt.  Another thing I emphasized to several people was that just because they're not singing (when there's a two or four bar piano part before they come in again) does not mean they "drop" character - it's the same as a scene - if you're standing off to the side and waiting for your line to come in while four other people are saying theirs, you don't stand there out of character.  One fellow sang Anthem from Chess - he sang it haltingly and his body language read totally uncomfortable - didn't know where his hands should be, shuffled, etc.  I asked him one simple question: What's the title of the song?  He replied Anthem.  I said, "What's an anthem?"  He looked at me and totally understood my point, and his second go-through had strength and for most of it he was much more comfortable.  That's the fun of this class.

Looking at that Carroll Baker dance shot, I'm reminded on the back of the paperback copy of HARLOW that came out around the time of Baker's movie, they had her posed in a very similar gown, chair and postition as an old Harlow still, and it was a pretty remarkable comparison.

The movie, of course, didn't seem much in period at all, but that publicity picture certainly looked like the real McCoy.

Ah, yes, DRMATTH - Carroll's transformation into 30's icon Jean Harlow happened on board the Queen Mary as she traveled to London for the European premiere of THE CARPETBAGGERS.

The film was supposed to be an expensive and accurate account of the life of Jean Harlow directed by Carol Reed - but once Joseph E. Levine got involved in the project and it became a race to beat producer Bill Sargent to the screen - and screenwriter John Michael Hayes sacrificed truth to "story" - Carroll became not Jean Harlow, but Carroll Baker with 60's hair and shoes and not much else that had ANYTHING to do with Jean Harlow.  8)

But it started out well.....as some pre-publicity photos show.

I wish they hadn't mucked about with the Stop the World film.  It has awful orchestrations with strings added, which completely ruin it for me.  Plus they added a song not by Newley and Bricusse (a pretty song, but one that had/has nothing to do with the show - it was an existing song called I Belived It All).

I'm very curious about MattH's alleged demise....was there an obituary or something that alerted the power company to the possibility?

I also know the results of the ladies' free skate.

But I'm not telling.

No, I'm not.

I'm really very excited about watching "Weekend in Havana" now.

I bought it instead of "Pin-Up Girl", which I will probably get when it's on sale at deepdiscountdvd!

I bought most of the Gable movies on VHS when Fox issued them back in the late 1980s-early 1990s...and I wasn't too fond of most.

"The Dolly Sisters", "Down Argentine Way" and "Springtime in the Rockies" were my faves.  I don't believe I've ever seen "Mother Wore Tights" or "My Blue Heaven".

I can watch Alice Faye in ANYTHING, however.

I recall seeing "Tin Pan Alley" with both Faye and Grable  on TV back in the mid-1960s...and would love to have a pristine DVD copy of THAT epic musical extravaganza.

PennyO, is that the Las Vegas cast of MENOPAUSE?  They just opened there on Feb 1.

I also had a phone call from a woman who wanted to know if I would fill out her IRS Form 1023, which is the application for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.  That's equivalent to the undergraduates who used to wonder if I'd write their term papers for them  ::)

I shall now be on my way to the theater for tonight's performance.  Pray for Rosemary's Baby.

Also, Disney called today (after I'd invoiced) and said they did indeed screwup, so we have to now go back into the editing room and change all the end pages and slates, remove one shot (some last-minute new guy saw it and wanted one one second shot taken out), then redo three VO tags and then layback the sound onto the new versions.  This thing starts airing a week from Monday.  The soonest they could get me in the editing room was Tuesday afternoon and I still haven't heard about the audio session, which I hope will be on Wednesday morning so I can FINISH this job and re-invoice them and get PAID.  Unbelievable.  Still, I get two more half-days out of it, so that's a plus.

Let me see...

If I was a pairs skater or ice dancer. I would use the love Theme of Tristan and Isolde coupled with the March of King Mark for my short program.. Despite the quality of the movie the music is nice from Lovespell.

For my long program I would use soemthing from Romeo and Juliet if I was a pairs skaters.

AS an individual I would use soemthing jazzy for the short and broadway for the long.

Ice skating music:

Theme from "The Ice Of Laura Mars" may work.

Walking On Thin Ice  (Yoko Ono) may not.

I don't watch the Winter Olympics.

I did go to the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) to see The Royal Ballet perform "Les Patineurs" once
That was in 1972.

My favourite "skating" performace was by Wayne Sleep and is a parody of Chistopher Dean.

I went to the post office at lunch today and picked up a package.  It was a brand new MP3 watch (yes, watch) that I got on eBay.  It holds 1 Gigabyte!!  My first MP3 watch that I got last year only holds 128 Megabytes.  I'm so excited (a Pointer Sisters reference)!  It could hold ±16 hours of music!  And it's snazzy looking.  This was from the eBay listing, but the actual watch that I got doesn't have a "12" or "6," just the bars at every number.

But the coolest part is that it's not just a player, it's an MP3 recorder and it has a built-in microphone!  I could be at a concert and record the whole thing without anyone knowing! ;) I only tried recording a few seconds, but it does work!  It was my one big-ticket item that I got with my income tax refund. ;D

Here's the actual description:

This stylish watch comes with a full-featured MP3 Player with built-in Digital Voice Recorder & built-In Microphone. While playing 3D stereo music with five EQ setting, it carries up to 240-320 songs. Used as a mobile flash USB disk, it can also carry your computer documents, digital photos, and powerpoint slides for your conference presentation. The unique built-in digital voice recorder allow you to record up to 72 hours of voice at amazing MP3 format 44kbps. Now you can record voice Notes, reminds, Meetings, Conversations with your friends and customers, as cool as James Bond. The unique line-in recording function allows you to convert your music collections in CD/cassette media to MP3 files directly to this watch, you can also record any radio programs using this line-in recording function. No worry about battery, this watch comes with built-in Li battery and can be recharged using your computer or the wall power outlet.

Dick Tracy and Star Trek all rolled into one.

And on that note (E#), I'm going home. ;D

Right now I'm supposed to be doing my homework. So why am I posting here? Because I don't feel like doing my homework, that's why.

I'm glad Danise is doing well. I know I didn't post, but I was still sending vibes.

I don't have a whole lot more to say. Not much has happened lately in the way of interesting things, except that 28 kindergarteners and seven teachers went on a field trip yesterday and rode my bus. I sat next to a five-year-old named Diandra who really liked to talk.

Isn't Charlotte Greenwood in WEEKEND IN HAVANA?  Or am I thinking about another movie....and it's got some horseracing or something in it?

That's DOWN ARGENTINE WAY with Grable, Ameche, and Miranda. HAVANA has Faye, Payne, and Miranda. I find it a more entertaining movie than DOWN ARGENTINE WAY.

PIN UP GIRL is WAY down the list of Grable pictures, I think.

A LONG evening of TV, but I enjoyed all of it, well, most of it.

Beginning with the endless AMERICAN IDOL one hour results show (that could give the results in two minutes if they wanted). If there had been ANYTHING else on of interest, I would have watched it.

But I stuck it out.

No surprise in the women's eliminations. After I read the "scandal" of Becky's magazine posing, I knew the producers would want to get rid of her. And Stevie, whom I disliked intensely the other night, deserved to go. I'm just sorry Brenna wasn't the other woman eliminated.

I was susprised at Patrick's elimination. No, he wouldn't have won, not enough personality, but the voice was pleasant, and I'm sorry he didn't have more impact. I certainly called Bobby's elimination. He shouldn't have made it to the semifinals.

CSI repeated a rather bizarre case from earlier in the season. Gave me the creeps the first time I saw it, and it was creepy this time, too, but also quite a sad story of loss.

Then, I settled in with Olympic skating.

spoilers - - - - -

I was proud of Emily Hughes and her skate and final placement. If she sticks with it, she can certainly work her way up into the top bracket of skaters. She has the potential to do well.

The Canadian skater was my favorite of the evening (apart from the Japanese champion, of course). I thought the Canadian (sorry, I can't remember her name) was lyrical, smooth, and steady on the ice. If she hadn't had a poor short program, I would not have been surprised to see her on the podium.

I think Kimmie Meisner's program was a tiny bit undervalued. I think I might have placed her ahead of Fumie in the final results. Fumie had the jumps but was gawky and not very pleasing to watch.

As the judges said, I admired Sasha fighting, fighting, fighting back from the bad opening jumps. And it was lucky that the second half of her program was flawless in the jumps since that's where the bonus points acrue. Unluckily for Slutskya, doubling the combination and falling on the triple loop in the second half robbed her of two opportunities for bonuses that surely would have lifted her to silver.

She did the exact same thing four years ago. She skated last, and the gold medal was within her grasp with Kwan falling on her triple loop, and she just didn't deliver in the long program then, and she failed again this time to take advantage of others' lost opportunities.

I have to say, Irina seems like a nice person and a brave individual to continue fighting through all the adversities she's been facing in her life, but I find her skating abrupt, jerky, and unengaging. I was delighted she wasn't awarded a gold medal on her reputation alone.

And now, I need to go to bed. I'm having lunch with my fella tomorrow and would like not to look like death warmed over (which is what the power company seems to see me as being).

I'll explain that mix-up tomorrow when my eyes aren't slamming shut.

Good night!

Good Evening!

Well, I'm almost completey done "De-Nick-efying" my room here - I just need to store some shoes and outerwear - just gonna throw it all in one big plastic storage bin.  And the plastic storage bin was the one that I used to bring up the rest of my clothes, and since I got my dresser drawers lined, and the clothes put away, I can use the bin to store the rest of Nick's stuff.  In other words, I had a very productive afternoon.

:)

After getting my room in order, I went ahead and headed to Columbus Circle and walked over to MTI's offices to meet up with DR Jason.  We then took the bus down to 23rd and 9th, and walked over to Chelsea Clearview Cinemas for tonight's showing of "Funny Lady".  Well...

Neither of us had seen the movie before....  What a crazy, excessive - and long - mess of a movie this is.  However, seeing it with "the Chelsea crowd" was a hoot - and made the two hours and 15 minutes fly by.  -Each costume got applause, and someone even took a pic during the opening of the "Good Day" number.  -And, boy, is that quite the musical extravaganza! ;)  And the old age make-up and that wig(!) for the final scene...  The whole theatre just could not stop giggling.

Alas, Hedda Lettuce was not there tonight - she's apparently in Europe right now.  -Hmm... Wonder if she's at the Olympics.  ;)  However, the manager did a nice emcee job, and with the length of the movie, the shorter pre-show was a good thing.

Of course, after the movie, we headed down 8th Avenue to get some dinner.  We ended up at Better Burger where we had, what else?, burgers.  -And their very good and very yummy Better Fries - which are baked (organic, Yukon Golds).

And then came Magnolia... Banana Pudding and Cupcakes.  Sooooo good.

Well, it's good to know that Ant's foot/leg is feeling better/recovered.

Oh, you must go see BERSERK when it shows! That one is a hoot!

I would love to see both "Hush.. Hush..." and "Berserk" at the Chelsea Clearview Cinemas - Where Dreams Come True - but, alas, I'll be in the throes of Lestat.

:)

*I start back officially three weeks from today!  :)

The Overture to She Loves Me or South Pacific.

Besides that, I've been on the phone for a good part of the morning trying to convince the power company that I'm not deceased. Lots of fun convincing people you're alive when they insist you're not.

Well... If they think you're dead, and you're still getting electricity to your house... Well... That's not such a bad deal, is it?

;)

Or...

cue spooky music

They see dead people.

EM I LEE!   EM I LEE! EM I LEE!

Just cheering on the local girl......

As we were dining at Better Burger earlier tonight, they had two TVs on in the place.  One was set to Fox - for "American Idol" and "Skating with the Stars" - Scott Hamilton was on two networks tonight - and the other was set to the Olympics.  People were stopping outside the window and looking in to watch the ice skating.  Only in Chelsea.  ;)

Finally back from the theater and a late supper.  The show was weird - like a line-through with blocking, with everything a beat off.  Not low energy, really, but just perfunctory and without personality.  We'll get there early tomorrow night and work some stuff to get them back into the personality of the piece.

Plane tickets are $220, or I could just drive. And if I drive, I'd either have to leave at 3 a.m Saturday to get there at 9 a.m., or I would need to leave Friday and stay overnight.
