ASK BK

RE: silent films

Did the studios send out a music score to be played along side the film or did the person/people improvise to what was happening on the screen?

I think it would be an interesting experiment if some company who releases silent films, create a separate audio track that would allow you to choose the music (public domain) to score the different scenes. e.g. A chase scene could use The William Tell Overture. The various choice could be at the bottom of the screen and one would use their remote to choose the music.

Good morning, all! I am in a great mood today; I'm seeing the new musical ONCE at the New York Theatte Workshop. It's sold out for the entire run which ends on Jan 7, and on Feb 28, the production will transfer to Broadway. I'm a big fan of the film, and I hope the musical is half as good. Report at 5.

I'm meeting my friend Rob at noon for lunch before the show, and until then I will work on the ROBERTA scores. That's my day.

Ron and Dona Raines are having their Christmas brunch after all, it seems, although Charlotte had posted several weeks ago that it was off. I've got to finish shopping for them, and I need to find a god new fantasy novel for Charlotte. Thoughts to occupy my waking hours.

It's been decades since I thought of "Dear Brigitte." I would love to see it again. I remember enjoying it when I was a kid.

I loved Ed Wynn in "Mary Poppins," but I agree that he could be grating. Still, I have an autographed self-portrait in doodle hanging in my work room, although I see it's hidden by DVDs at the moment.

We had a nice first night of Chanukah last night.  I gave Betsy a collection of politically incorrect gifts which I dare not even describe here, other than to say it's been an inside joke for most of this year and something which she finds appalling, but she did laugh heartily.

Yesterday XM's Chanukah channel started, and I had to laugh when the late Debbie Friedman's Latke Song came on.  Christmas songs are usually wonderfully poetic; the Latke Song's lyric contains the timeless chorus "I am a latke/I am a latke/You must eat me for Chanukah."

One gift I gave Betsy which I can mention is the sweet little William Wegman DVD called Hardly Gold, featuring his iconic Weimeraners.  The main feature is no great shakes, but it has some sweet extras that Betsy loved when I got a review copy years ago.  That copy had disappeared somewhere along the way, so I contacted the studio and purchased a new one.

I was sitting in the conservatory wondering why it was so cold and realised that the electric convector heater wasn't working. After checking it out, I found it was completely dead so I went out and bought a new one. Got it home, unpacked it and found a massive dent in the side. Took it back for a replacement and have just got back home and can sit in the conservatory in the warm again. So that took up all the afternoon!

I watched the Alfred Hitchcock Hour on EncoreSuspense last night (two episodes every night at 10 pm. and 11 p.m. Mon-Fri).....this is an episode I had never seen....with Robert Keith and Edd Byrnes and Stephen McNally.....

I really did see the "surprise" ending coming....BUT there was an additional twist that was still shocking.....

So far I am loving my kindle!  And it came with a plug. So i'm thinking i can charge it in the wall (vs in the computer).

I was able to connect it to my wifi, register it (all on the actual kindle). And since i have a giftcard in my account i can just order the books on my actual kindle. And it takes 2 seconds. I ordered the  2 x 99 cents novellas by my favorite author that are not available for purchase.

Btw, did anybody else know you can type in -doman  (with the dash) in the amazon.com search and it shows you all kinds of free books!

I didn't think i would like the keyboard. But i do. It lets me search and buy on the kindle!

I still don't know how to web browse. And not sure whether i am supposed to charge it or wait till battery is dead. Anybody know?

Jennifer, I don't think you have to wait until the battery is dead to charge it.  I haven't, but HERE (http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_krec_docs?nodeId=200317150) is the link to the Kindle Documentation page.  I would assume that it's the same for Canada, but there should at least be an equivalent page on amazon.ca.

From Bruce:
Quote
The darling daughter doesn't have a lot of dough, so this year she made me two cherry loaves - based on a recipe of her Aunt Jean - something I used to absolutely go bonkers for every Christmas during the married years.  Aunt Jean still made me a cherry loaf every year for about five years even after the deevorce but I haven't had one in twenty-six years.  I just had a piece now and I have just sent my daughter a text (which I did by speaking into my phone "Send Jennifer a text" which it promptly did as I dictated it) - "Cherry loaf - best present ever - eating it now".

The latest Cinema Retro magazine has a brief but nice review of the Summer and Smoke CD and praises Kritzerland on its 100th release. There's also a fabulous article by Sir Christopher Frayling, with many illustrations, about How the West Was Won and an article about Cinerama and the Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm.

I have returned from East Fourth Street, and the trip was very worthwhile.  I always regretted seeing RENT in its original Off-Off-Broadway home, and I am happy to be one of the lucky few to see ONCE there. The movie is a glorious film, filled with yearning and unrequited love sublimated into music writing and making. The new musical is a really fine translation of the film into another medium. Roles have been changed, enlarged, and expanded to fill out the book, but the essentials remain the same: the Dublin Guy meets the Czech Girl with the broken Hoover vacuum cleaner while he's performing as a singer on the street. She plays piano and the friendship begins. He misses his girl who left him and moved to New York (I think it's London in the film) and she's got a daughter by a husband who's back in the Czech Republic.

If you haven't seen the film, I recommend it highly, for the story, the cast, and the Dublin locales. I like the score very much, and most of it, with about 3 or 4 new songs make up the score of the show. When you enter the theatre, the cast is warming up with Irish pub songs, and everyone, except for the Guy and the Girl, plays several instruments: Andy Taylor, in the expanded role of the bank loan office, plays mandolin, guitar, and cello, and he's wonderful. The lady playing the Girl's Czech mother plays melodica, and accordion.

I think one of the reasons the show works so well is that neither Steve Kazee nor Cristin Milioti resembles the film actors and songwriters, so we're not stuck in a NINE TO FIVE attempt to replicate Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, or Jane Fonda, or LEGALLY BLONDE's needing a Reese Witherspoon. They're both wonderful and they break your heart.

The cast, for most of the play, sit on the sides of the action and play and sing as the show's orchestra, and their unaccompanied choral sound is perfect for the scene on the beach when the demo CD the Guy is making is finished. My friend Rob and I had great seats in the second row from the last; we sat in front of Norbert Leo Butz, Aaron Tveit, and Tara Rubin (I think).

I had chicken kiev and fries. But I soon felt hungry after that so I made a ham and tomato sandwich.

DR Jennifer - keep your Kindle's wireless turned OFF except when you need it.  Saves the battery...

Correct!  AND don't leave the wireless option turned on...that uses more battery power than if it's turned off, too.

What is the difference between keeping the wireless off. And Don't leave the wireless on that uses more battery than if it's turned off??

I am leaving the wireless on off whenever i'm not browsing. But i love being able to browse in bed!

DR George. the link you gave is the same as the instructions on my kindle. But i didn't see any mention about charging it. Do you see anything about that? How many bars does yours usually have when you charge it. And how long do you charge it for.

Mine came with a plug for the wall. So i am just going to charge it that way. Although not sure how long to do it for (is overnight fine?).

When you're using the wireless to search/browse, that's fine.  It's if you're just reading, then you don't want to have the wireless on because it uses more battery power.  The website where I got mine says, "A single charge lasts up to one month with wireless off. Keep wireless always on and go for up to three weeks without recharging."

*And I was once again reminded of the crazy food and restaurant tax in the City of Richmond. There's the Virginia State Tax + City of Richmond Tax + City of Richmond Food Tax (a.k.a. The Baseball Stadium Tax). All in all, I think it comes to something like 14.5%!!! -Which, on the bright side(?), makes it easy to figure out the tip.

The Kindle user's guide says that it should take less than three hours to fully charge it and the charge indicator light (at the on/off switch) will turn green when the battery is fully charged.  The battery icon at the top right will have a line making it look like it's broken to indicate that the battery isn't fully charged.

The "bars" are indicators of how powerful your wi-fi connection is.

Well, I guess vacation didn't start today.  I went to storage, got the charts, got them Xeroxed, have chosen and/or assigned almost all the songs, had lunch with Alet, and have been trying vainly to organize the CD closet and got half the stuff in there off the floor.  I would venture to say there's probably 150 CDs there that are still sealed.  I don't know when I'll have the chance to listen, and I think I'm just going to take some of the marginal stuff I get free and go trade it in because I know I won't like it (most of the cheesy 80s stuff).

Well, I didn't get to see a lot of the show, but what I saw was cherce!  They were very good, the audience loved them and we sold all of two glasses of wine...and no beer!  From a concessions point of view, it was really weird.  Not that there's anything wrong with people not drinking, but I've never worked concessions and served alcohol and practically NO ONE bought any.  Obviously, they only came to see the show...and they loved it. :D
