Well, you've read the notes, you're feeling oh so patriotic and red, white, and blue, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to figure out what salt peter has to do with the price of tomatoes.

I guess it's hardly surprising but I have never attended a party for, nor attended a celebration of, July 4th.
I'm not even a cockeyed optimist about the day.

Have a great day USA.

AARRGGHH!!  I came across the answer to the Unseemly Trivia Contest and Dan Goggin but didn't think that that was it because Nunsense was off-Broadway and for some reason I was thinking (wrongly, I now realize) that the most frequently produced musical was a Broadway musical.  Darn. :(

Growing up in Burbank, I fondly remember the city's annual fireworks displays.  The fireworks were set off from Stough Park, which was up in the hills above the San Fernando Valley.  We happened to live right below the park...well, there was quite a lot of hill slope between us and the park, but there was nothing but undeveloped area, making the view quite good.  We had the choice of viewing the fireworks from either our front yard or back.

The back yard soon became preferable, because a number of other people in the city (and probably from elsewhere as well) discovered what a wonderful viewing area our street was.  People would stake out parking places in front of the houses, and watch from where their cars were parked.

As the fireworks show progressed, we could hear the "oohs" and "aahs" from the street.

I don't remember there being much trash left on the street by our annual visitors.  It was a more friendly, considerate time.

Rehoboth Beach held it's fireworks display on Sunday.  It's an annual thing, of course, one that der Brucer and I watched from the roof of a Boardwalk hotel a couple of years ago, and quite spectacular.

This year, der B's daughter and her family decided to watch the fireworks from the beach itself.  I opted not to join them, and from der B's report I was wise to do so.

For one thing, I had an early call to work on Monday, so I wanted to get to bed early as well.  And I don't funtion well with really crowded areas.  And as for Mommy's habit of screaming at people...

Rehoboth shuts down all downtown traffic on Fireworks Night.  Anyone wanting to get into the town can park their car in a large field next to the highway for a fee of ten bucks, which goes to various beneficial local organizations.  The town then operates a shuttle from the parking area into town, a good use of the local school busses.  Visitors can load as many people as they want in their cars, same price.

So Mommy, Daddy, Der Grampa, the grandlads Alex and William, and Mommy's Cousin and her son Brody all packed into Mommy's SUV and parked in the designated field, then shuttled towards the beach.  Der Grampa suggested to Mommy that they find a place close to the Boardwalk, so that if anyone needed to use the bathroom it wouldn't be impossible to reach one.  No, Mommy couldn't forsee it being that packed, and parked herself, her chairs, and her blankets close to the water.

Of course, there was lots of time between when they arrived at the beach and the fireworks display.  Had they remembered to bring things that would amuse the grandlads and their cousin?  Rhetorical question.

Soon Mommy was screaming her head off at the boys, because they were getting sand on their hands.  The boys, by this time, have learned not to listen to her, which only makes her angry and gets her to scream even more.

Then Mommy started screaming at the other people on the beach, because they were getting sand on the blankets she had stretched out in front of her.  She had staked out her section of the beach, and dammit she was going to make sure it was HERS!!!  Daddy kept his mouth shut, fuming.

The fireworks certainly were spectacular, from what der Brucer told me later.  So were the ones that took place in the sky.

I'm glad I missed them.

Good morning, all!  I slept in this morning, so my day is beginning later than usual.  I see from the cauldron of eggs on the stove that my sister-in-law and chef par excelllence Jo Annwill be devilling eggs today and I believe we will barbecuse some ribs.

I need to walk next door and see how my dad is doing.  I'm hoping that this weekend DRGinny will come by and photograph the houses so I can show you the geography of this particular enclave.

DR Ginny should also post a shot of herself in that lovely Victorian gown.

My best Fourth of July?  I have fond memories of several in my childhood filled with ice cream, family picnics and a night of firework displays.  I believe my last celebratory one was in Logan, Utah, in 1997 while I was working on the Utah Festival Opera production of GREENWILLOW.

Most memorable 4th of July was when I was young and single and hanging around with a group of gay couples and singles who gathered each weekend and on holidays at a beautiful lake home on Lake Wylie. There were day-long cookouts and there was dancing, drinking, performing to music (many were theater folk), and around 8:30, we'd pile in some boats and go out to the middle of the lake where the local officials would have a fireworks display that was pretty awesome.

Oh, those were grand times.

I still haven't chosen what I'm going to watch today. I'm not in the mood for YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, and I just rewatched `1776' a few weeks ago, so I'm not ready to return to it now.

I'm thinking I might pick a Western like STAGECOACH for one of my films today.

And I know I have TOM THUMB and THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR. T on the DVR recorded off TCM this morning. I haven't seen either in a long, long time.

Last night was marked as a "technical rehearsal".  Last week, my assistant director and her husband said they would like July 3 off so they could go to Paramount's (not anymore) King's Island with their kids.  I said okay.

Mr. Assistant Director is playing the first murder victim and also running the sound board.  I went early and set up the LIGHT board so that the man running the lights would have some temporary cues and we could give the actors some sort of continuity with lights/music/sound...and get some kind of timing on them.

Of course the LIGHT MAN never showed up, never emailed, never called.

So....do I run the sound with the boom box downstairs, where I can watch and take notes....do I do the lights UPSTAIRS...cues run together of course.

We did without the sound....which I had run Friday evening.  It was not a BAD rehearsal.  Just a bit of a wasted one.   GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

I sent the LIGHT MAN an email and told him he MUST attend every other rehearsal and if he missed one, he would be replaced!  I also CC'd the director of SEUSSICAL since he has volunteered to run the sound board for THAT show.

But other than that, I had a good evening.

Oh....bought a cover for the ugly love seat and made an important discovery:

I do not know how to put on a furniture cover.  It is now resting somewhat on top of the loveseat, with the instructions nearby.  Hopefully someone with skills will stop by and say:  "Oh, I know how to do that."

JRand, thanks for the smile!

It's overcast and drizzley here, with sun breaks. I'm feeling sort of melancholy and arthritic... I remember WAY back to childhood, with my dad and his brother setting fire to store-bought fireworks in the backyard, and sparklers and those "worms" - sort of little plugs of something that you lit and watched as they seemed to grow, and they left a black residue on the pavement... and one year we all went to the LA Coliseum (jeez, how do you spell that?) and watched the fireworks, and the guy on the loudspeaker told certain sections to light a match, and it was so amazing to a little kid how a mass of bleachers turned into a starlit sky...

So the people next door continue to have the houseguests and tent guests and I took some of the visiting children blueberry picking yesterday - it's about 10 days early this year, for some reason... I do love picking berries. And if I take children with me, it becomes even more wondrous through their eyes.

I've never been a big fourth of July party-guy.  Most interesting was during bicentenniel summer.  We had just closed a production of Rainmaker in St.  Petersburg, FL, and much of the cast was driving back to Texas.  Larry Drake and I were in my car.  And the actor who played File and his family were in another.  We had a leisurely picnic along the roadside, then stopped for the night in Jackson, Mississippi, where we sat in a diner and watched fireworks.

Jrand, love the Laurel and Hardy.  Saw Hardy, pre-Stan, in a wretched silent version of The Wizard of Oz on TCM, where he played the tin-man (sort of) in an unrecognizable adaptation of the story which seemed mostly a clothesline on which to hang the dubious anctics of a dreadful comedian with the unfortunate name of Larry Semon.

This was followed by a fifteen minute version of Wizard of Oz from 1910 with a ten year old Bebe Daniels playing Dorothy. 30's Director Robert Z. Leonard also played a role but I can't remember which one.

The 4th of July is one of those holidays that's never been particularly sacrosanct for me in terms of having set traditions to observe.

Sort of like Memorial Day and Veterans Day (the import of either is not lost on me in any way), the 4th is a day set aside for specific observation of specific events.

I know fireworks are a part of the plan, community wise, and I enjoy a good display of fireworks.  My annual watching of "1776" happens on the 4th.

But the rest of the day is kind of lost on me except as an extra day off in the summer....and the last "holiday" until Labor Day, which I usually take rather personally as it nearly always falls on or on either side of my birthday (in observance, that is).  A sort of "Hurray for ME!" holiday.  And a commemoration of the labor my mother went through giving birth to me, dontchaknow.

But, sacrosanct or not, my heartiest HAPPY 4th of July greetings to all and sundry.

Even our Aussie, Canadian and French compadres.

TOD - Here are some of my 4th of July memories:

1963, Bar Harbor, Maine:  On vacation with my parents and we watched a fireworks display over Frenchman's Bay - all the boats showed their appreciation by blowing their horns

1976, Middletown, Ohio:  The much-discussed parade in which our community theater entered a float commemorating 3 centuries of American theater:  1776, The Contrast; 1876, melodrama; 1976, The Wiz.  The parade ended at the newly-completed City Building.

1996, Custer, South Dakota:  DH Richard, DS Rob, and I were in the first week of our first road trip out west.  We'd visited Mt. Rushmore on July 3 and went to Wind Cave National Park on the 4th.

The most unique fireworks I've ever seen were not on July 4, but during Middfest, the international festival that our community hosts the first weekend in October.  In 1982, the featured country was Mexico, so the big finale to the festival was a display of Mexican fireworks, which the organizers had great difficulty getting into the country.

Happy 4th!!!   I normally spend the 4th with family at the lake. Which can be wonderful and a pain in the butt all at the same time.  But this year, I'm staying home working on cat independence day.   Today was a banner day.  Bootsie saw the rest of the house and for about 45 minutes to an hour, there were 2 cats roaming free.  Then Bootsie jumped on Nilla's chair and Callie got VERY upset.  I decided to end it before it got ugly. Only a few hisses and only one "In your face" confrontation, but no scratching and no biting so I am most pleased.

I have several memorable 4ths.  One I was very small and the whole neighborhood, friends and family gathered for a huge display in a field near our house (we lived on the outskirts of town).  I think that's the year my dad won a case where he was defending a big fireworks company....anyway, I digress...

The first or second roman candle misfired and landed in a huge box of fireworks!  Rockets were careening along about 2 feet off the ground. Grown men were running through the field and jumping fenses to get away from them.   No one was hurt, just a scrape or two, but the show didn't last long and even though it wasn't the spectacular bombs bursting in air. It was a night that no one forgot and is discussed by those in attendance any time the subject of fireworks comes up.

In 1976 (when I was 10), we lived in Colorado.  The country was celebrating the bicentennial and Colorado was celebrating its centennial.  There were huge events, lots of concerts in parks, big fireworks, etc.  There was one event where they had a huge scroll and everyone who was there was supposed to sign it because the scroll and a whole bunch of other stuff were being put into a time capsule that was going to be put on top of Pike's Peak and opened in 2076.  I signed the scroll five times. ;)

Kobayashi ate 53 3/4 hot dogs (with buns) to claim his sixth consecutive Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest title. Chestnut, who had hoped to bring the hot dog eating championship home to America, made the competition with Kobayashi close finished with 52 hot dogs.
The previous world hot dog eating record, also set by Kobayashi, was 53 1/2 hot dogs (with buns).

So, the other day I bought one hundred dollars worth of mailing envelopes that clearly stated CD and DVD mailers.  Well, maybe they hold the DVD itself, the disc, that is, but they certainly don't hold a DVD case.  Therefore, I cannot preaddress labels today as planned, and I have to return all these first thing in the morning and get ones that WILL hold a DVD case.  I suppose I could just address the labels, but they're on rolls and it's very unwieldy and difficult to do so.  So, tomorrow, prior to the discs arriving (probably late afternoon would be my guesstimate), I shall address one hundred packages and their delivery confirmation tags.  I might try to get a helper over here.

I'm thinking I'll take a little dip in the pool.  Just who the dip is I don't know right now, so I'll have to go find a dip.

That's a line from DEATH BY CHOCOLATE.

Where's the board of directors?

They're taking a dip in the pool.

Where's Margaret Daniels?

She's the dip they're taking in the pool.  :P

I also will bring the CD that I made from the soundtrack of the complete laserdisc.  I think I did a pretty good job with that one. ;D

You sure did! The copy you made for me is one of my most prized possessions! As I've said before, I MUCH prefer it to the original Broadway cast recording.

Those earlier versions of THE WIZARD OF OZ are available on the complete 3-disc WIZARD OF OZ DVD special edition set that was released last year. Oliver Hardy looks weird as the Tin Man in the 1925 version.

I started this afternoon with TOM THUMB, the delightful and underrated fantasy produced and directed by George Pal. And I think the use of the Puppetoons was the best ever done in this film. It was Russ Tamblyn's first true starring role, and he should have had a bigger star career. He's very impressive in this movie.

Next, I watched LISTEN DARLING, the movie Judy Garland made right before starting THE WIZARD OF OZ. Lots of familiar names in the cast: Mary Astor, Walter Pidgeon, Freddie Bartholomew, Scotty Beckett, Alan Hale, and even though Judy has top billing and sings three songs in the picture, it's not really just her show. The spotlight shines pretty equally on all four of the leads.

I forgot completely about LOVESPRING INTERNATIONAL last night, but luckily a rerun is coming on tonight, and I've set the DVR now to record all new episodes and reruns so I won't have to remember to program it manually from now on. There was one, I repeat, one copy of Doctor Who available here in Rehoboth Beach.  Unfortunately, it is for sale at a place that is not known for discount selling, and was priced at ten dollars more than we can get it online.

No matter what either one of the kitties do, Cillaliz, I don't think you should resort to scratching or biting them.

We're having a family outing today:  my father, my two brothers,  two sisters-in-law, one nephew, one in-law and her adorable 8-month baby.  This, I fear, may be one of the last holidays we will all be together, so it's a very important fourth for me.

Elmore, I hope you have a Fourth of July full of memories that will last a lifetime.

Oh all right.   We tried it again this afternoon. Bootsie did great for about 10 minutes then took off after Callie.  So, I put her back. They're getting better and I realize at some point they'll have to have the opportunity to wrestle around and figure it out. But, I'm not going to push it

I filled the evening with three programs. I started off with MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA, a Hercule Poirot mystery which I had seen long ago but had very little memory of. The transfer looked simply wonderful (hadn't seen it on the larger TV), and I thoroughly enjoyed it even though as it got closer to the revelation of the murderer, it all came back to me, and I remembered who the murderer was. Still, loads of fun.

I assume you mean Amazon Marketplace, and I've had great success and really good deals from them. Plus, on Amazon Marketplace, they set $2.49 as the standard shipping for a single disc. On Ebay, those people can list any shipping they want, so you have to be careful.

I ended the evening with THE KING & I. This is the first unenhanced DVD of the film, but I'll be darned if it didn't look wonderful. With the larger TV and my upconverting DVD player, the image was joyously colorful with just the least little bit of twitter maybe three times in the whole film.

I can only imagine how breathtaking the new anamorphic release of this is going to be this fall.

RE THE CLOSER, I don't think you get TNT so the only way you can see it is on the DVD set of Season 1. Highly recommended by quite a few folks here.

2. TIFFANY'S has a much cleaner new transfer than the last one. BK didn't think they got the flesh tones right. Overall, it's just fine.

Yes. The movie moves me to tears every time.

I was looking for a movie celebrating Americana. Of course, the subject matter isn't American, but you can't get much more American than Rodgers and Hammerstein, so that's what I went with to celebrate the 4th.

I ended up seeing a fireworks show after all.  I live about 4 blocks from the Country Club and they put on a show every year.  I didn't see it advertised anywhere, so I thought maybe it was off this year, but round about dark I heard the booms so I went up the hill a block or so and joined my neighbors. Including 2 little girls who kept jumping up and down yelling "FIREWORKS!!!!"  It made it all worthwhile

It was a long day on the cat front.  Last time I let Callie get close to Bootsie's door she did one of those low howls and went at the door swinging.   So, we're done seeing each other for today.  I shut Cal in and let Boo run around a little tonight, but the fireworks upset them both, so I'm trying to keep things as calm and quiet as possible for the rest of the night.

I think my AC is working.  The humidity went down, which helps, but the guy I talked to who said it was frozen and all I could do was shut it off until Wednesday (fat chance of that) also mentioned it may not be getting enough air.  So I went out and bought one of those really cheap filters that lets a lot more air through and it really made a difference.

I'm heading for bed now. I hope the folks who are still firing off their fireworks will tone it down soon. So tedious after awhile.

I wasn't aware that Johnny Depp was in A Midsummer's Night Dream.  What part does he play, Dakota?

I got my men mixed up, sorry!

STill debating if I want to get Midsummer's night's dream with Michelle Pfieffer and Johnny Dep... Not a huge fan of his so I am wary of getting it. NOt sure if I want to see my favorite Shakespearean play slaughtered.

Dakota, I don't see Johnny Depp listed on IMDB for Midsummer Night's Dream, It's got Stanley Tucci (who was great in DEVIL WEARS PRADA) Kevin Kline, Rupert Everett...well here's a link http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0140379/fullcredits

I like Johnny Depp, but if you don't, looks like you don't have to worry about it

DR PennyO, I feel in love with that movie. IT has so many different textures and subplots. Fascinating to say the least!

I have it on vHS but my tape is wearing out and it has a large white line now running through it....

And, yes, I've been errant and truant again today, but I have some good excuses:

1) I left Richmond this morning at 9:00.

2) I spent the afternoon with my newest niece, Emily.

3) When the severe line of thunderstorms moved through  around 6:00pm, it knocked out the power here and elsewhere.  The power just came back on about 15 minutes ago.  -It was kind of interesting spending the Fourth of July by candlelight.  However, there was plenty of "light" provided by all the fireworks and firecrackers going off in the neighborhood(!!!!).

Dakota - as far as your question about Amazon - I order from there all the time.  Just make sure you have over a $25 order and you won't have to pay shipping.  You can also sign up to get the Amazon Prime, but I seem to get everything in a matter of a few days, so I'm saving the $70 and just saving up and ordering the regular way

He is hit andmiss with me... I have liked him in some things and others I have not...

I am the same way with Julia Roberts, there are many movies she does well but there are some I have seen her in that I have literally cringed namely Mary REilly and Micheal Collins.

Fireworks going off like crazy, but for some reason they're just a little more north than last year, which means instead of being in the clear sky between huge clumps of trees, from my vantage point they're hidden behind the northerly clump.

I may not make it until the fireworks tonight, even though all I have to do is open the curtains in the living room and there they are.  However, I think I may go to bed (alone) instead.

I go back to work on Thursday.

Odd day, this  4th of July.

I watched "Star Wars," "Dark Victory" and "Old Acquaintance."

I stood on my balcony a bit after 9 p.m. and watched about 10 minutes of fireworks.

Local PBS station is airing a major docudrama on JRand's FAVORITE musical movie star...Gene Kelly.

And I'm certain Rodzinski and TPunk are enjoying this break from "summer" weather while they're here in the Bay Area.

It has been very cool the past week....and sleeping must be done under some sort of covers if the windows are open.

Today, after the barbecue at my sister's house, we watched "Independence Day."  We were supposed to watch "1776" but my niece pouted and got her way (she's getting too old to do that).  Anyway, my sister's cat Casper got out and so far, hasn't been found.  He's an indoor/outdoor cat but must have gotten scared from all the noise...and there's a lot. :P I'm sure he'll be find.  He's hidden under her house before.  Any my cat Ebonie doesn't seem to be too bothered by the noise, but she's inside.  That might make the difference.

Oh, definate ditto here!  Will I convince der B to get us out of the house to hunt?  (He keeps calling Doctor Who "that stupid thing," the cretin!)

Circuit City didn't have the new "Doctor Who" in stock and if I wanted to order it, I could...for $99.99!  No discount!  Not even on-line (http://entertainment.circuitcity.com/Movies/BoxSet.aspx?set_id=S030872&prodid=BBCW2501DVD). :P is what I say.  Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E41MS6/qid=1152080938/sr=8-2/ref=sr_1_2/102-4779504-7364131?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130) has it for $64.99 (free shipping, but in Washington State, I have to pay tax).  And deepdiscountdvd.com (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=BBC025010) has it for $69.86 but no tax or shipping.  I'll check at Costco tomorrow.  I couldn't find it on-line, but there were a couple of DVDs that I bought at the Costco store that wasn't listed on-line, either.

You sure did! The copy you made for me is one of my most prized possessions! As I've said before, I MUCH prefer it to the original Broadway cast recording.

And you get Howard Da Silva! ;D
