Well, you've read the notes, you know the report, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be very soon - as soon as they finish listening to their Guy Haines CDs.
-
And the word of the day is: FASTIDIOUS!
-
Topic of the Day: Favorite renditions of Sondheim songs?? (including original cast recordings)
#1: Dame Edna's version of "Losing My Mind" tied with Dorothy Collins' original version.
"I'm Still Here" by Yvonne DeCarlo. Dorothy Loudon's version is a close second
"Send In the Clowns" by Anni-Frid Lyngstad (the brunette from ABBA) who sings it in Swedish!
"Water Under the Bridge" by Debbie Gravitte
There are, of course, many, many, many (that's three manys) more, but I can't think right now (it's almost 2:15 a.m. PST). Goodnight, all!
And Thanks, BK! I got the package today!! ;D
-
Hoo and Ray! (one of my favorite comedy teams from radio days)
I got rid of my computer glitches, so that i can at last log on to this here site. It's nice to know Guy did well in SF.
I'm back just in time for all the upcoming clebrations! And like Foremost milk and its cows, I am fastidiously fresh.
So, hello everybody, this is Mrs. Norman Maine.

DR Jane, yesterday you mentioned that two of the side effects of my antibiotic are dizziness and malaise. The only side effects it said with the bottle are diarrhea, dizziness, nausea.
I never seem to get dizziness or nausea. I always get drowsy. The sad part is it's not even for antibiotics. It's anything that could even remotely make you dizzy. Now, not advil or motrin. But sudafed that says non-drowsy totally knocks me out. And any other med like that, and I"m a goner.
So often it's hard to tell if i'm still sick. Right now i think it's turned into a bit of a cold. At night I have this drip in my throat (easily remedied by sudafed). And my nose is running a bit. But my throat is pretty good.
Only 2 more days of the antibiotics.

There was nothing on tv last night that I watch. The only thing I taped was THE CLOSER with Kyra Sedgwick (sp?). That is on here on Mondays. Really good show. It's sort of like the order part of LAW AND ORDER. But basically it is named because she excels at questioning witnessing. Very good show, and she is fantastic in it (and I don't even like or watch police dramas).
-
Tonight is THE AMAZING RACE. Hopefully it will be interesting. Last week they sort of misrepresented that hot air balloon crash.
Also I will tape BOSTON LEGAL. And perhaps the VICTORIA SECRET FASHION SHOW.
-
Good morning, all! This is the BIG DAY and I am starving. I cannot eat a thing until after I am dismissed from St Luke's-Roosevelt around 3:30 pm or so. I will spend the morning working on orchestrations and trying hard to not think of food.
TOD:
I prefer the original casts on most performances: Dorothy Collins and Glynis Johns are still irreplaceable IMO.
on UNSUNG SONDHEIM, I'm crazy about "There's Always a Woman" and Debbie's "Water Under the Bridge"
"What Can You Lose?" the great Guy Haines recording
"Send in the Clowns" Cleo Laine's Carnegie Hall recording from the 70s
"Goodbye for Now" Liz Callaway
-
I had a FASTIDIOUS biopsy this morning (I know that's not the proper use of the word, so sue me!) when I went to the dermatologist. Results next week. He thinks it's nothing but he wants to be sure. It was a spot which showed up a little more than a year ago. He said it was pre-cancerous and we got rid of most of it with a cream (Carac I believe it's called). Now for the last follow-up since there is still a slight mark he decided to biopsy it and make sure it's nothing serious. It may be a basal cell skin cancer but he said that would be easy to remove and if it's the remains of the pre-cancerous mark that will be easy to treat also.
No more sun for me!!!

Good morning!
DR elmore - I hope your procedure goes well today and that everything is OK. Do you have someone to help you get home afterward?
DR Ben - Did you receive the mail I sent you? Your volunteer work sounds like fun and it's so worthwhile. If I were staying in my favorite Comfort Inn, I'd pop in to help!
Hi, DR FJL!
-
Cingratulations to Mr. Haines... I wish I could have been there to seen the performance!
-
~~~VIBES~~~~ to dear elmore for an easy procedure and easy fast!
-
~~~Vibes~~~ to dear Ben for a good biopsy result
-
~~~Health Vibes~~~ for Danise and Jennifer
-
Good morning!
DR elmore - I hope your procedure goes well today and that everything is OK. Do you have someone to help you get home afterward?
My friend Matthew is busy this afternoon, so I've sent Skip Kennon an email to see if he's free. My goddaughter Charlotte is booked until 8:30 so she's out and her father's singing in New Jersey tonight with Rob Fisher, so Ron's unavailable. I may be standing outside St Lukes at noon hiring someone. Otherwise, I'm stuck in the hospital until the doctor releases me.
-
We woke up to three inches of snow much to the disgust of the Vixter who (despite my precautions) had worked herself up to expecting a blizzard of epic proportions and who had carefully planned how she was going to spend her "snow day " off from school
As I dropped her off at school with my customary, "I love you have a great day" she muttered "It's too late for that" and trudged off to class.
~~~~~~VIBES~~~~~~~~ for a friendly helpful face to make sure you get home safe and sound after your procedure
-
Larry, Skip's available.
-
Oh, I guess Skip just spoke to you. He'll see you around 3:45.
-
DRvixmom, your vibes and everyone else's have come through. DR FJL's companion Skip just called me and he will see me home today. I'm very blessed in my friends. Thank you all.
Dear Friend BK, I'm glad that Mr Haines had another triumph last evening. Safe travel vibes back to LA and a relaxing week to follow.
-
Larry, Skip's available.
Oh, I'm so relieved! I was beginning to think I'd have to put retired DH Richard on a plane!
-
TOD - Julia McKenzie's "Broadway Baby," from the Side by Side by Sondheim that DR elmore gave me years ago. She has just the right winsomeness and builds at just the right point, I think.
-
I am very pleased Skip is coming for you Lar....
-
FJL - I just caught up on last night's posts- your Fish frenzy (with notable additional material written by Dan the Man and Iris) had me laughing out loud!
-
and FJL congratulations on post 777 on page 7 and post 800 on page 8...
Your mission, Mr. L., should you choose to accept it.
is to time your post 900 for page 9 today.

Me too, DR vixmom, as did your story about The Vixter's thwarted snow day!

Me too, DR vixmom, as did your story about The Vixter's thwarted snow day!
I just spoke on the phone with Vixdad. He rides into work on the train with one of the Vixter's schoolmates' mom. She said her son had exactly the same reaction as the Vixter's, apparently going so far as to say that the TV weather forecasters should be sued for raising people's hopes and expectations and then letting them down.

On location here at the Oakland Airport. What I hate about Southwest: No reserved seats, you board in groups. I did an online boarding pass, which put me in group A, of course. But, now, if you don't get to the airport ninety minutes before the fly, the line for even group A is ridiculous. I'm first here, but only because I was here two hours early.
The Super Shuttle, which I also hate, was twenty minutes late in picking me up, and I was not the last customer - we had one more pickup. The driver was a complete jerk - I'd been told by the dispatcher that I was the last stop. The driver informed me I wasn't. I got a bit annoyed and informed him that I a) was upset that he was twenty minutes late, and b) that I wasn't too happy we had another pickup. I asked strongly how long it would take to get to the airport? He got very loud with me, telling me I was making him nervous. I said, "I'm making YOU nervous? I wasn't twenty minutes late, I don't have another pickup to make." He then said loudly, "Look, I'm very upset - they have a new system and it isn't working well" blah, blah, blah. I said, "Your system is your problem, you were supposed to be here between five-fifteen and five-thirty and it's now five-fifty." I thought seriously about telling him what he could do with his shuttle and his system, but he said it would only be twenty minutes to the airport once we got the last guy. He didn't, of course, mention that the last guy was completely on the other side of town. And the other guy took almost ten minutes to come downstairs and get on the van. The other person in the van was already calling a cab, which I said I'd go halves on. But, then we got going and I got here in plenty of time.
I will be asking for a refund (I didn't pay, but my hosts should get the refund anyway).
The group B line is now huge and there are people in line for group C.
-
Glad to see Ben back, and most happy to see dear reader Kerry.
-
Good morning!
A chilly albeit beautiful morning here, and I'm looking forward to walking later in the day after seeing RENT.
-
DR Vixmom, I got a hearty laugh from your tale of woe concerning the Vixter. How well I remember the same thing when I was her age. However, I found, even as a teacher wishing for some time off, that the heavy snow never came when forecast. The big blizzards always came by surprise which made our joy even more delicious.
She'll be out soon for her holidays anyway.

I'm liking that there are actually some new episodes of MY NAME IS EARL, THE OFFICE, and LAW & ORDER: SVU tonight (and BOSTON LEGAL and THE AMAZING RACE for fans of those shows).
-
Our local TV critic wrote a scathing pan of the holiday classic A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS saying he had always found it dull, gloomy, and a downer.
Guess that's why it won the Peabody and Emmy Awards in 1965 and has remained a viewing favorite for four decades and sold millions of copies of the delightful jazz score. Obviously, he's talking about some other CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS that I've never seen.
-
Favorite Sondheim renditions:
1. "Water Under the Bridge" by Debbie Gravitte
2. "Losing My Mind" by Dorothy Collins
3. "The Glamorous Life" by Cassidy Ladden
4. "There Won't Be Trumpets" by Millicent Martin
5. "Send in the Clowns" by Julie Andrews (on the Tonys)
6. "Uptown, Downtown" by Dee Hoty
7. "What Can You Lose?" by Guy Haines
-
A couple more Sondheim numbers:
8. "The Ballad of Booth" by Victor Garber and Patrick Cassidy
9. ""Finishing the Hat" by Mandy Patinkin
-
Let's do one more to make it an even ten:
10. "I Remember" by Liz Callaway (and I like David Kernan's version, too).
-
I always liked "Agony" (both the first act and second act version)as sung by the original cast
(you think I remember their names? I have trouble remembering my name some mornings...)
Okay I looked 'em up
Robert Westenberg and Chuck Wagner
-
I always liked "Agony" as sung by the original cast
(you think I remember their names? I have trouble remembering my name some mornings...)
Robert Westenberg and Chuck Wagner
Gregg Edelman and Christopher Siebert (in the revival).
-
Thanks Matt! If I had waited a few momewnts I might have known you'd know!!
-
I must go get ready for the movies now.
WBBL.
-
Vixdad and I will sing this snippet from agony to one another when comparing bad day at work stories...
"Agony ... much more painful than yours!!!!"
-
I am eager to hear your thoughts on "Rent" Matt!
-
I wonder how dear RLP is feeling this morning. Well I hope, no more sniffles or sore throats....
-
I wonder how dear RLP is feeling this morning. Well I hope, no more sniffles or sore throats....
RLP is bemused this morning.
...at all the silliness he missed last night after he went to bed.
...and at all the chattiness that is going on here this morning.
-
One favorite Sondheim rendition:
Anthony Warlow -- "Anyone Can Whistle"
-
Another:
Barbara Cook -- "Send in the Clowns"
-
RLP also has a sore throat, dratitalltohell.
And post-nasal drip that the meds I'm taking don't seem to affect.
I don't know what power dragged me out of bed, dressed me and got me to work...but I'm seriously displeased with the situation.
I will see what I will see. I may go home by lunch time.
-
Owing to the fact that (or, in other words, "Because...") nothing else was on TV last night that even slightly interested me, I tuned in to the SciFi Channel's "The Triangle". It has great credentials and a very interesting cast.
I was lucid only through about an hour of it, but despite at least one terribly banal dialogue exchange, it developed an interesting story and built up quite a bit of tension. I believe (as I missed the last 15 minutes napping in my rocker) it's continued.
Frankly, I can't see how that last 15 minutes could possibly have tied up all the loose ends and wild hypotheses that had been expounded on up to that point.
But...I HAVE seen TV movies do that, too.
__________________________________--
I checked the SciFi.com site...there are two more parts to the miniseries...tonight and tomorrow night. So...
-
While at SciFi.com, I read that Stephen Spielberg is set to remake "When Worlds Collide."
Ha-Cha!
-
BK, next time fly Alaska Airlines. You can choose your seat.
-
I agree with so many of the Sondheim renditions people have already, but just a few more favorites:
Randy Graff's performance of "Every Day a Little Death"
David Campbell doing just about everything in the off-Broadway production of SATURDAY NIGHT
Raul Esparza doing "Franklin Shepard Inc."
Daisy Eagan doing "Broadway Baby" on the Tonys
Michael Cerveris and Rebecca Luker doing "Happiness"
-
And since it's on my mind and I'm currently obsessed :) with Chita Rivera: the snippet of "A Boy Like That" that Chita Rivera does in her current show, just breathtaking
-
Last night after drving home from work, picking the Vixter up from her dance class, running home and making her dinner and then droppingher off at her play rehearsal and then doing a quick bit of shiopping, running home and meeting Vixdad, picking the Vixter up from her play rehearsal and going to a diner for a quick bite to eat, putting the Vixter to bed,
I sat down and had a lovely long telephonic chat with William F. Orr, The Errant and Truant, He pleads that he is busy setting finals, and researching the purchase of a new motor vehicle, but sends all his best wishes.
He also sends a speciific message to DR Jason... he has JUST (last night) opened his email from you containing your singing and he was absolutely blown away. He says it was wonderful and wants to know when BK will be offering you a record deal.
I myself , not having sufficient downloading capability have not yet been privleged to hear it so I have begged DR WFO to cut me a cd from his download.....
That is all.......
-

BK and I (along w/DRs Jose and Phil) have worked together (albeit briefly) on Ms. Judy Kaye's track for the JEEPERS CREEPERS album. I don't know if he's actually heard me really sing, though...
-
Hasn't DR Sandra sent enough cookies to DR Jason to get a recording of his singing?
Why would I want to punish her for sending me so many wonderful cookies?? ;)
I figured DRs Kerry & MusicGuy had already given you a sample of my singing. They have the original discs! Send me your address again...

You're right! I'd forgotten about that... I hope, though, that I've vastly improved since then. And, I was sick on the day we recorded POOP.
-
Hey!
I have an idea!
WE'LL put on a show!
We have all the talent we need right here. We have the director and choreographer, the singers and the dancers, we can build sets and sew costumes.
Why, Sure!
EVERYbody will come.
-

POOP rather sickens me, too!

POOP: The Magic Tag-On!

So...from whom did the vixter inherit HER talent?
-
I WANT A MICKEY-JUDY DVD SET AND I WANT IT NOW!
-
DR Laura: I don't have the song files with me at work. I'll send them to you tonight when I get home. Be sure to remind me!!
-
I would LOVE to be on a BK produced CD or be in a HHW show!! I've performed live and do a mean "Beauty That Drives a Man Mad" from Sugar/Some Like It Hot! Of course, it's a duet...any takers?? ;D
-
If BK needs someone who sings like Carol Channing -- I'm in!!

Sadly, off to work, now! Just had to pop in. ;)

Ben your volunteer work sounds great, if I lived a bit closer I would stop in.
Cilaliz and I have been complaining it is cold here. ;D
For the last two days our world has bee white, no snow just frost and fog.

Frigid here this morning.
Hmmm...I'm not quite sure WHAT to say about this comment.
-
Jason-
I'm on the lookout for that program. They all delivered, so nobody has one here now, but at some point I should be able to snag you one.
-
Finally home. Flight was delayed twenty minutes. And for whatever reasons, they let five sickening businessmen preboard before even the preboards. They, of course, took the bulkhead aisle seats, but more importantly they took ALL the luggage space in the first three compartments. How obnoxious is THAT? I had to put my stuff in the fourth luggage compartment even though I snagged the second row aisle seat. And we all know how easy it is to have to go two compartments in back of you when trying to retrieve your luggage so you can leave the plane. Happily, I was there so fast that the gentleman in front of that luggage compartment handed me my overnight bag and laptop, and I got off the plane quickly.
-
I like Dorothy Collins doing Am I Losing My Mind on the Scrabble LP. Passionate.
-
Can I say how much I'm not liking abc.com? I was trying to check if LOST is new tomorrow (apparently it's a repeat). But they make it VERY difficult to figure out. Almost every other station website says "new" or "fresh" when they list their shows. It makes it so much easier to figure out what is new.
-
Welcome home MR BK! Sounds like Guy Haines' had a great performance.
LOL DR RLP! And it's cold outside, too.

A friend just sent me this....
WARNING! WARNING! LIBERAL BIAS AHEAD
After numerous rounds of "We don't know if Osama is still alive", Osama himself decided to send George Bush a letter in his own handwriting to let him know he was still in the game.
Bush opened the letter and it appeared to contain a single line of coded message:
370HSSV-0773H
Bush was baffled, so he e-mailed it to Condi Rice. Condi and her aides had no clue either, so they sent it to the FBI. No one could solve it at the FBI so it went to the CIA, then to the NSA.
With no clue as to its meaning they eventually asked Britain's MI-6 for help. Within a minute MI-6 cabled the White House with this reply: "Tell the President he's holding the message upside down."
;D ;D ;D ;D

MBarnum... is Freddy your friend again?
Freddy has been most attentive the last couple of days...I think he is happy to have my full attention again.

Jennifer, are you watching the first season of THE CLOSER or new episodes? We love the show and are looking forward to its return.
So happy to read Guy’s debut was a hit and the show a success.
-
Jason GOOD KITTEN VIBES!
-
I watched about one hour of The Triangle, and I liked a lot of the actors, so it was fun.
I will watch the second part tonight. The airplane crash was scary. LOTS of CGI, LOTS!! But interesting. I don't know if it's HD or not, but the surround sound was good!
Bruce Davison (he will always be Willard to me) plays a psychic who joins the team to help find the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. He and the others on the team are promised $5 million each to work on the project. Who makes the promise? Damien himself - Sam Neill!!
-
DRMBARNUM - your birthday present is ON the WAY!!
Now that is what I like to hear!!

I downloaded, and have been listenining to, an LP from an obscure group called THE POPULAIRES! The album is TRY TO REMEMBER, and it is wonderful!
I can't find any info out about them other then that they used to play at The Greenbrier Hotel in Greenbrier County WV where station WRON would broadcast from on occasion....in the 50s or 60s I would guess.

I'll post photos as soon as I'm able. First, we have to find out if we can even keep a cat. I have a feeling she's going to say no. She's one of those weird landladies who magically appears out of thin air and taps you on the shoulder to confront you about who left the front gate open the night before or, "Are you aware that your bathroom is flooding the rest of the building?" We've had many knocks on our door from her telling us that we've recycled the wrong stuff and she got billed for it. Of course, she doesn't know what it was that we recycled that was wrong, but she got the bill for it and wanted us to know it. The other day, to help "keep the apartment warm," she gave us some sort of inner tube to lay across the bottom of the door to block any drafts that may come. I have a better suggestion - turn on the heat!! :)
Anyway...I've a feeling she'll say no, but here's hoping. And the pictures would go up right away, of course. ;D

Page 5 John Abraham (who I hope to see this weekend) dance!
(http://www.bollywood-dance.de/_diverses/without_makeup/bipasha.jpg)
-
Uh, who is John Abraham's friend?
-
Sadly, I don't know the Populaires.
-
Here I am at work, until 9pm. On my way, I had my first Starbucks' lowfat gingerbread latte of the season.
If we put on an HHW show, maybe DR elmore would recommend me as a director's assistant.
DR vixmom - I wish our son had inherited his father's singing ability; unfortunately, he interited his mother's.
-
Uh, who is John Abraham's friend?
That would be actress Bipasha Bashu, without make-up. She is also a big Bollywood star and currently is dating John Abraham.
Bipasha seems to appear in every other Bollywood movie that gets released...personally I don't understand her mass appeal.
-
Sadly, I don't know the Populaires.
Rodzinski, their album is on Weirdomusic.com now.
-
Bipasha seems to appear in every other Bollywood movie that gets released...personally I don't understand her mass appeal.
Prolly has something to do with her mass, DR MBARNUM! :o
-
For what it's worth, my favorite Sondheim is instrumental-----the overture-waltz to "A Little Night Music"
-
DR vixmom - I wish our son had inherited his father's singing ability; unfortunately, he interited his mother's.
LOL, while my boys didn't inherit Keith's voice, they are worlds better than I am. ;D
-
I liked almost ALL Sondheim recordings....but if pressed:
Being Alive - Dean Jones
-
I don't think I know from Sondheim. However, I had thought he was a current songwriter...but looking at peoples lists I guess he is not.
I guess I don't know.
-
Oh yes, I had seen that Populaires LP, but not listened to it. Enjoying their version of "Dear Heart" right now.
Speak of the Devil (as vixmom was) I spy a WFO.
-
I don't think I know from Sondheim. However, I had thought he was a current songwriter...but looking at peoples lists I guess he is not.
I guess I don't know.
Yes, Michael, he is a current songwriter. He's just been around for 50+ years...and still going! ;D
-
DRMBARNUM.....Mr Sondheim is a famous theatre music/lyrics composer. You have heard MANY of his songs. He wrote lyrics for WEST SIDE STORY and GYPSY and the music & lyrics for A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO FORUM among MANY others!
-
For more information on Stephen Sondheim, you can go to www.sondheimguide.com and search for just about every recording of his music.
-
I don't know if I'd describe Guy's performance as "a hit" - I'd describe it as 500 people watching and thinking to themeselves, "What the HELL am I watching." You could almost hear them saying it. Of course, in Mr. Haines' mind, that's a hit. I will say again, however, that his curtain call did get one of the largest applause.
-
I managed to catch up on the shipping of stuff, so that's done.
-
TOTD: Not A Day Goes By - Carly Simon
-
I think somone ought to fire up "The Cookie Chase" ballet.
Seems apropos, a bit....
-
I can barely keep my eyes open. I'm hoping I get my second wind soon, because I REALLY don't want to go into our rehearsal and fall asleep while they're reading my play.
-
DR Michael B - Mr Sondheim is a songwriter for Madonna, and Liza Minnelli - LOL.
-
I also like the Cassidy Brothers singing "You could Drive A Person Crazy"
Today's Topic is really in the too difficult basket for me.
-
Dottie Loudon's "Losing My Mind/You Could Drive A Person Crazy" medley is one of my all-time favorites. She was brilliant...
-
Oh,no, BK, don't fall asleep while the actors are reading your play.
That would be MOST unseemly.
Did Mr. Haines have his back to the audience for the curtain call?
Vixmom--LOL--love the Osama joke!
Hoping DR Elmore is back home and feeling ok.
-
I also like the Cassidy Brothers singing "You could Drive A Person Crazy"
I LOVE this version...not so much because it's three hunky men singing a song that was written to be sung by women (which is always a good thing ;)), but because the music director didn't take the song so quickly to make the lyrics unintelligible! I've heard too many performances (locally, I'll admit) that try to take the song as fast as possible...much, much, much (that's three muches) too fast for the performers.
-
TOD--
Susan Egan does a terrific rendition of More from Dick Tracy.
Jane Krakowski's Sooner or Later.
Michael Feinstein performs a beautiful Being Alive.
-
Back from RENT, and I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. It's more a "regular" musical now as opposed to a pop opera, so I liked that aspect quite a lot.
The sound level was several hundred decibels less in the theater today than was present at the Nederlander Theatre when I saw the show.
And the ability to use montage during the numbers to keep the visual interest equal to the aural interest was a help. Now, there are things to see other than folks with wrap around mikes singing in your face.
No, I still only like about half of the score, but that half is performed sensitively and beautifully by this cast, and it's great seeing so many of the original folks doing the roles they made famous.
-
DR Michael B - Mr Sondheim is a songwriter for Madonna, and Liza Minnelli - LOL.
Ha! I am afraid that doesn't help me any! Did he ever write any Bollywood songs?
-
I have as sudden urge to go to Joe Allen's and eat dessert with Jose.
I kinda miss New York!
-
"...But he'll come back to you again..."
-
Good Afternoon!
Greetings from the Green Room...
Four hours of tech... And now Lunch/Dinner. So far, so good.
-
I had had nothing to eat all day, so after walking home from the theater, I fixed myself a belated lunch and watched some more of DEAD MAN'S FOLLY that I had started last night. Having seen this and read the book a couple of times, I do remember the identity of the murderer, but I'm enjoying seeing how the writer-director is trying to deflect attention away from the guilty parties by planting uninportant information and making it seem important. Fun.
-
I have as sudden urge to go to Joe Allen's and eat dessert with Jose.
I kinda miss New York!
I have that same urge too right now.
Spooky!
;D
-
...And I more than kinda miss New York right now. -But I'm hoping to make it back there next Monday.
-
Debbie Reynolds as the singing nun is coming on TCM in 90 minutes.
-
And, yes, I've been extremely errant and truant and truant and errant. That just happens sometimes.
I had actually tried to post yesterday - which was my day off - but I just "felt" like staying off the computer and/or looking at a computer screen... My eyes needed the rest. And I think sleeping till Noon... and then taking a power nap around 7:00 also had something to with my absence.
-Sometimes you just don't know how tired you are until you have the time to be tired.
-
Debbie Reynolds as the singing nun is coming on TCM in 90 minutes.
The movie is pretty lame, but Debbie does beautifully with the songs, and that piano solo Chat Everett "plays" is one of the most beautiful piano solos in the movies. (It was the last cut on the first side of the soundtrack LP.)
-
Ha! I am afraid that doesn't help me any! Did he ever write any Bollywood songs?
No, he's an artist.
:D
-
And if I'm remembering correctly...
Vibes to DR elmore.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
*And if I'm not remembering correctly, then Vibes to him anyway!
;)
-
DR Michael B - Mr Sondheim is a songwriter for Madonna, and Liza Minnelli - LOL.
Ah...then he's in the same class with you as "Steel Magnolias"?
-
Too busy "Finishing the hat"
-
Perhaps he should write the musical of "Steel Magnolias" Ron. Or "Beaches".
-
Mr Sondheim is my favourite composer of Musical Theatre. BY FAR>
-
Mr Sondheim is my favourite composer of Musical Theatre. BY FAR>
That's good to know.
One can never be quite certain, after all. ;)
-
Yes, Mr. Haines had his back to the audience for the curtain call.
-
The afternoon has been very quiet since I returned from lunch (a cup of chicken gumbo soup and a toasted reuben on rye).
-
I'm not complaining, mind you.
-
Okay, finally got photos uploaded. Let's start with our set.
-
Nice set. Good moody lighting.
-
Here is BK (in tux) and his beloved Cindy Williams.
-
Elmore update -
Larry is done with his procedure, and having a fine meal with Skip at a restaurant somewhere on 112th and Broadway.
-
My lovely assistant and cute-as-a-button Svetlana.
-
Good to hear.. Thanks for that FJL. I wonder when the film will be developed so that his pictures can be posted here.
-
Here is Mike Lembeck, Annette Cardona, and Bill Ewing.
-
Here is Alex Henteloff, Mark Hamill, and Gary Stockdale.
-
bk's lovely photos, with a positive DR elmore report - nice way to spend my dinner hour.
-
Very nice photos!
-
And, yes, I've been extremely errant and truant and truant and errant. That just happens sometimes.
I had actually tried to post yesterday - which was my day off - but I just "felt" like staying off the computer and/or looking at a computer screen... My eyes needed the rest. And I think sleeping till Noon... and then taking a power nap around 7:00 also had something to with my absence.
-Sometimes you just don't know how tired you are until you have the time to be tired.
Absolutely, Jose. You can go, go, go...and then worry that you're not going enough. But when you sit back and relax, you suddenly realize you've passed a threshhold and need rest.
-
Great photos....wonderful set!
And MR BK looks most spiffy in his tuxedo! What a treat to see all of the celebrities! Why you couldn't spit backstage without hitting a star!
-
DR JOSE are the Washington Senators wearing the regulation baseball compression shorts under their uniforms?
-
Hey, I've seen some of those guys on TV!
:D
-
MBarnum - Some famous Sondheim Bollywood trivia:
Dainty June and Her Bollywood Blondes sang "I Have a Moo Cow" in GYPSY
"Sweet Bolly Plunkett saw her life pass" - sung by Patti Lupone in a current hit revival
"Bolly Moses, natcherly we're punks" from East Side Story
The recent revival of his show BOLLIES featured the great Bolly Bergen
He was mentored by Oscar Hammerstein, who wrote "Bolly High"
Etc.
-
DR Jane I believe I am watching Season 1 of THE CLOSER. It just started here in September.
-
FJL, you just cracked me up! LOL!!
-
Hmmm...that Michael Lembeck looks like a very handsome man.
-
And the set has a very retro look to it!
Where is a pic of Hugh O'Brian?
-
Michael Lembeck is not only a handsome man and a fine actor and director, but he was also the answer to a BK Unseemly Trivia question a few months ago.
-
Michael Lembeck played a former high school football player faking a spine injury on an old MURDER SHE WROTE episode. The beautiful Dack Rambo was also on that episode.
-
I see that the Margaret Rutherford/Miss Marple films are coming out in a box on March 14th. Also released on that day will be the Hugh O'Brian TEN LITTLE INDIANS.
-
Michael Lembeck also played a caterer with whom Blanche Devereaux fell in love but scorned because he was "just" a caterer and therefore not good enough. One of the better episodes of the second season of "The Golden Girls," IMHO. At least I think it's from the second season...maybe the first. I can't remember.
-
Boy, was I wrong! Michael Lembeck never did an episode of "The Golden Girls" in his life. I was thinking of Donnelly Rhodes, who played Jake, the caterer.
-
All true DR FJL
-
See why I got them confused? They sort of look alike, only Donnelly is older looking in this picture. When I thought Michael was Donnelly, I thought, "Boy! He's aged VERY well!"
-
Boy, was I wrong! Michael Lembeck never did an episode of "The Golden Girls" in his life. I was thinking of Donnelly Rhodes, who played Jake, the caterer.
Ooh! I like Donnelly Rhodes too! I had a big crush on him when he was on SOAP way back in the day.
-
And the set has a very retro look to it!
Where is a pic of Hugh O'Brian?
It will be taken when he stops talking. :P
-
Heading downstairs now to clean the living room.
WBBL.
-
It will be taken when he stops talking. :P
I heard it was because every time he took a breath, the camera was sucked out of the photographer's hands.
-
Could be, DR RLP....could be.
-
Well...
Just been catching up on Posts and Notes...
Still have a few days-worth to read, but in the meantime...
-
Hmmm...that Michael Lembeck looks like a very handsome man.
Still! ;D I remember seeing him on TV when I was much younger (and shouldn't have been thinking what I was thinking...but still do)! ;)
He used to be on "One Day at a Time."
-
A past Topic of the Day...
Favorite Romantic Movie Scores...
"Cinema Paradiso" (Ennio Morricone)
"Like Water for Chocolate" (Leo Brouwer)
"Somewhere In Time" (John Barry) - with an "assist" from Sergei Rachmaninov
-
DR MBarnum - So glad to read that Freddy is back where he belongs.
:)
-
As for Chita Rivera's new show...
I saw "Chita... And All That Jazz" a couple of years ago in Richmond. I liked it a lot. And she did a ton of dancing - backed up by a mini-chorus of dancing men. *"Hey, Big Spender!" was FUN-NY!. With not much book involved. It was basically a career retrospective/revue. I thought it was destined for a larger venues, but it peetered out somewhere along the way.
-
As for In My Life closing...
Well, at least Jessica Boevers will be able to come downto see Matt Bogart, her fiance, on his Opening Night of Damn Yankees here in DC.
When Life gives you Lemons...
-
Well... Dinner break is coming to an end...
Laters...
-
You know Hugh O'Brian was quite the studly one back in his Universal contractee days.
-
The new Disney "tins" are on the streets...and Amazon.com has shipped!!!
-
Ooh! I like Donnelly Rhodes too! I had a big crush on him when he was on SOAP way back in the day.
I guess he fulfilled all your ex-con fantasies. Yep, the bitch is back!
I am starving! Feed me!
DRFJL, I'm spending Christmas with you and Skip. what a nice surprise tonight.
Thank God for Demerol.
-
Most people who spend Christmas with us tend to have taken Demerol when they accepted the invitation. :)
-
I didn't know Hugh O'Brian was in THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS!
Shopko has that dvd for $7.50. I should buy it I suppose, having not seen the film since I was a tike.
-
I really like this movie. I'd recommend getting it. :D
-
I really like this movie. I'd recommend getting it. :D
Hmmm...your liking it (and my LOVING it) aren't really the same things as MBarnum enjoying it. Of course, it's gaudy and has huge production numbers, which he might love, too...it's hard to say.
Hugh O'Brian has a "bit" as Mitzi Gaynor's fiancee and, later, hubby. He has a scene or two...nothing major.
If you want PRIME O'Brian, look for "Where Love Has Gone" with Lana Turner. It's a soaper, for sure, but Hugh is majorly exposed on a beach in something resembling Speedos.
-
And didn't BK produce the Varèse Sarabande reissue of the soundtrack?
-
What soundtrack - No Business? If so, no, Nick Redman produced it. I just hovered.
I didn't get snaps of Diana Canova or Hugh, sadly.
-
Trivia: On One Day At A Time, it got down to two actors for the role Lembeck everntually played - him, and another fellow, right down to the wire, and they didn't make the choice until the day before filming. If MacKenzie Phillips had had her way, it would not have been Lem. Who was the other actor?
-
You??
-
Give that man a ceegar.
-
They must have been trying to spite McKenzie that day.
-
Give that man a ceegar.
I'm sure he'd rather have pancakes.
-
Frigid here this morning.
Try 16 below zero, that's what we had when I got up this morning...not wind chill that was something like 25 below. Actually I don't mind it. If you put on enough clothes it's not that bad. I just get really tired going in and out of the cold, which I had to do a number of times today
-
Freddy has been most attentive the last couple of days...I think he is happy to have my full attention again.
The dog is gone, he is once again the center of attention, he won......
-
DR FJL, you crack me up, thanks for all the hilarious posts
-
How's this for a twist of fate? My roommate, who has given up "the biz" and is moving back to Dallas in a couple of weeks, just got a job offer from her temp employer to move where...? My hometown, Louisville, KY! They're going to fly her out there one day this week to get a tour from the "relocation counselor" so she can see the city and look at some apartments. They'll give her moving expenses, a 401K, health benefits and several other perks as well as close to 50% in pay increase. Is she going to take the job? She doesn't know yet. ::)
-
I always liked "Agony" (both the first act and second act version)as sung by the original cast
(you think I remember their names? I have trouble remembering my name some mornings...)
Okay I looked 'em up
Robert Westenberg and Chuck Wagner
Well, Bob and Chuck may have been the first Princes on Broadway, but only Chuck was involved with the original original cast, at the Old Globe in San Diego (http://www.theoldglobe.org/productions/intothewoods181.html). The fellow der Brucer and I saw play Cinderella's Prince was Kenneth Marshall. (If it had been Westenberg, I'd have insisted that der B and I wait at the stage door to say hello; he's a friend of mine from college.)
-
Most people who spend Christmas with us tend to have taken Demerol when they accepted the invitation. :)
LOL.
elmore thanks God for Demeral and the thought of it makes me instills fear and makes me ill.
-
Jason have you applied for your roommates soon to be ex-job?
-
Let's everybody sing and make CDs and send them around....shall we??
Oh, let's....!!
There is absolutely no way that I would ever be that cruel to my fellow DRs.
The only living beings that will ever hear me sing are my dogs. (Please don't report me to the ASPCA; the dogs actually seem to enjoy it!)
-
Off to watch something with Keith.
-
The new Disney "tins" are on the streets...and Amazon.com has shipped!!!
Yes, I got my notice yesterday afternoon that mine had shipped, but I'm not expecting them until Thursday.
-
Watched NCIS for the first and last time tonight. A serial killer due to be electrocuted in a few days decides to play cat and mouse games with his old nemesis (Mark Harmon) in a canny plot to postpone his execution.
No likeable characters (well, except for one brainy guy the rest of the cool officers loved picking on; I HATE bullies), a scenario so full of holes and contrivance that my eyes were rolling in my head before fifteen minutes had passed.
But the show has been flowering in the ratings this year, and I wondered why. THAT'S the biggest mystery involved with this show that I could fathom.
-
MY NAME IS EARL had some funny slaptsick and a deceitful character who kept exhorting, "Don't you judge me" that reminded me of some parents I had conferences with during my years of teaching.
I hope NBC's decision to air this opposite CSI starting in January doesn't backfire and kill it. It's a funny show with a good heart.
-
THE OFFICE had an episode that was amazingly schitzophrenic. Part of it was very funny and the other part made me so uncomfortable (bad reactions to a Secret Santa gift exchange at work that turned into a very sour Chinese auction) that I was squirming in my chair. And yet, the show ended on a note of good cheer and laughter.
This show walks a very thin emotional tightrope, and sometimes they fall off.
-
LAW & ORDER: SVU had a very convoluted case that began as simple assault at a school and evolved into somethingmuch more complicated and very, very nasty. A disturbing show this week for me.
-
I didn't watch A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS on ABC tonight. I'll watch my DVD copy at some point in the next week or so.
-
Michael Lembeck played a former high school football player faking a spine injury on an old MURDER SHE WROTE episode. The beautiful Dack Rambo was also on that episode.
Dack Rambo--that's a name out of the past!
-
I didn't watch A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS on ABC tonight. I'll watch my DVD copy at some point in the next week or so.
I refuse to watch any of the Peanuts specials since they made the move to ABC. They chop in so many commercials that the shows are unwatchable.
Instead, I watched the first hour of OCEANS 11 on TCM and came to the realization that I never liked this movie.
-
Wasn't Michael Lembeck also Captain Kool of Captain Kool and the Kongs fame?
Were you up for that part too, BK?
Captain Kool and the Kongs were the Koolest. They sang at malls and stuff while introducing Saturday morning shows. I can't remember if they were a Kroft production or what, but they were in that realm of 70s weird/wrong.
-
Trivia:
What cupcake/dessert manufacturer used to sponsor all the Peanuts specials?
-
You know I see parts of this show every week while waiting for The Amazing Race to come on...and I feel the same way about it. Every character is so annoying, so "hip" and "cool" acting, it is just silly.
-
Dolly Madison!
Zingers!
-
Are there still Zingers out there?
-
(You are correct, by the way.)
-
I also watched the last half of THE SINGING NUN.
I had forgotten that this was a BIG MGM reunion film with all of the major actors from MGM's golden days: Debbie, Greer Garson, Agnes Moorehead, Ricardo Montalban (who looked GREAT), and Tom Drake. (Had forgotten Katherine Ross was in it, too, as well as the always wonderful Juanita Moore.)
This was shot in Panavision, but looked more like early Cinemascope in 2.55:1 aspect ratio. It was VERY narrow.
-
Another chance to disapprove,
Another brilliant zinger!
-
And now I'm heading down to the bedroom area.
Good night, everyone!
-
Here's Kaptain Kool.
-
I don't think I know from Sondheim. However, I had thought he was a current songwriter...but looking at peoples lists I guess he is not.
I guess I don't know.
Urk! Urk! URRRKK!
Beatrice! Fetch me my heart pills! NOW!!!
-
Here's Kaptain Kool.
Who are the chicks? I vaguely remember Kaptain Kool, but I was mostly a CBS Saturday morning kid.
-
Just consulted my Krofft book, and Lembeck not only beat out BK for the "One Day at a Time" role, but he beat out Tom Hanks for the Kaptain Kool role.
The shows during the Krofft Super Show hosted by the good Kap'n and Ko. were
Electra Woman and Dyna Girl (with the hot Diedre Hall)
Dr. Shrinker
Wonderbug
The Lost Saucer
Magic Mongo
and
Bigfoot and Wildboy
-
The Kongs were future impressionist (mostly of Cher) Louise DuArt as "Nashville,"
Mickey McMeel as "Turkey"
and Debby Clinger as "Superchick."
-
I do recall Electra Woman and Dyna Girl but none of the others.
I wonder if they will ever release any of the one-year wonders of Hanna-Barbara on DVD. Shows like FRANKENSTEIN JR AND THE IMPOSSIBLES, SPACE KIDDETTES, WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME.
-
DRMBARNUM - I think there is enough music and lights to keep you awake during THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS....it's like a mini Bollywood movie with BIG numbers breaking out all over....and Mitzi Gaynor with a wastebasket on her ass. Who could ask for anything more?
-
ELECTRA WOMAN & DYNA GIRL and LAND OF THE LOST were my two Saturday morning shows of choice.
-
DR RLP - I am shocked SHOCKED that you have given a film the wrong title.
Mr Hugh O'Brien, Mr Cliff Robertson, and Miss Lana Turner all appear in the film LOVE HAS MANY FACES....with the most amazing example of camel toe on a major star I have ever seen....I had to look away!
WHERE LOVE HAS GONE on the other hand stars Susan Hayward, Mike Conners, Joey Heatherton, and Bette Davis is a white-washed version of the Turner-Stompanato-Crane fiasco.
-
MR BK you were lucky. You would have had to work with *gulp* Bonnie Franklin.
-
I've never seen Frankenstein Jr, except as a comic book, and I heard it's pretty good. Wonder if they ever show it on BOOM, that non-stop Hanna Barbera network.
-
I liked NCIS - tonight's episode is a repeat and not one its better shows. I like the actors who play their familar parts well. But then, that's horses for you.
TAR is headed for the last round up with a two-hour finale next week! Then let's get BACK to the regular race, folks!!
-
Living near Indy, JRand, you must have run into Ms. Romano and her two lovely daughters—okay, one lovely one—from time to time.
-
She claimed to shop at Block's! So I stopped going there. And there are NO apartments like the one she lived in in Indianapolis that I know of. I don't know who the Indianapolis "expert" was on that show, but I don't think they ever did more than open the phone book.
-
Time for to go to bed.
-
I do recall Electra Woman and Dyna Girl but none of the others.
I wonder if they will ever release any of the one-year wonders of Hanna-Barbara on DVD. Shows like FRANKENSTEIN JR AND THE IMPOSSIBLES, SPACE KIDDETTES, WAIT TILL YOUR FATHER GETS HOME.
I remember "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl" and a show about Isis. Anyone remember that?
-
"Oh Zephyr Winds which blow on high, lift me now so I can fly!"
-
I checked the Isis (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072516/) listing on IMDb. :)
-
Back from our first read-through, about which more later - I'm actually going to try and finish watching a DVD.
-
Good Evening!
Well... I'm almost caught up on the Notes and Posts from the past couple of days. I believe I just need to catch up on Tuesday and Wednesday (today) at this point...
But that will have to wait until tomorrow/today/Wednesday...
Thankfully, my call is not until Noon tomorrow, but I do need to get up early enough to get my workout in - which I've faithfully been doing the past two and a half weeks! - and also make a run to the grocery store before heading in...
But before I go...
-
DR Danise - Good Health Vibes To You!
-
DR Rodzinski - Good Health Vibes To You.
-
DR Jennifer - Good Health Vibes To You.
-How's your throat doing?
-
RE: Strep... I used to get strep regularly. However, it was not regularly enough to get my tonsils taken out.
I had a little bit of a scare put into me the last time I went in for a strep test. My doctor informed me that sometimes strep can be almost asymptomatic. It can hurt for the first day or two and then just sort of disappear. Sometimes, strep will just truly go away on its own, but other times it may end up lingering. The infection and the "bad stuff" are still in your system - even if your throat no longer hurts. Worse, the strep bacteria(?) can actually end up affecting and infecting your heart. -And that can go on for weeks at a time with no "real" symptoms.
So... I no longer "ignore" my sore throats.
-
BK - Glad to hear that the LACC Benefit went well... Even if it did end up running more than a little long.
-
Well... Now that I've gotten us to Page 10, I really must get ready for bed...
Goodnight.
-
Worse, the strep bacteria(?) can actually end up affecting and infecting your heart. -And that can go on for weeks at a time with no "real" symptoms.
The same bacteria that causes strep throat causes scarlet fever.
