Title: THE BORING NOTES

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were slightly boring and won't be again, and now it is time for you to post until the boring cows come home.

So, there I was, 11:58 and ready to post the notes at the stroke of midnight.  I went and brushed my teeth and when I came back the Internet and Time Warner were down.  I called Time Warner and there was already a pre-recorded message saying there was an outage in my area - which means it was deliberate and they were doing whatever sort of work they occasionally do without letting anyone know.  I waited for an hour, nothing changed, so I went to sleep.  I just woke up, and voila, back to normal.  Go know.

TOD:

South Pacific is my favorite R/H show, although I like them all.  Of course the music is why it is my favorite, and I do like the love story and the setting....

BUT my favorite R/H song - and it's hard to choose a favorite - after thinking long, it is "Love Look Away."

My favorite R&H musical?

CAROUSEL

The songs are magnificent, and Billy's final line ("I loved you, Julie.  Know that I loved you.") always brings a tear.

My favorite show is The King and I.

My favorite score to listen to is South Pacific

My favorite songs is You'll Never Walk Alone from Carousel

Sometimes when I listen to an R & H score I like to "mix & match" Take cuts from various recordings and make my own cast album.

ie:  South Pacific: I like Ezio Pinza the best as Emile so I would use his solos. For his duets with Nellie I use the soundtrack.

I spread by Bloody Mary recordings out amoung Juatina Hall, Pat Suziki & Muriel Smith.

I like Sean McDermott for Cable

and for the fun of it I like Alec Baldwin for Billis

and Julie Andrews as Liat

I think it ended Act One, sort of like Curly's dream ballet, but it was different in the revised stage version.

You never know what you will find searching the web. Looking whatever happened to the stars of Flower Drum Song

Anyone ever heard of a film called Supercock

It was directed by Gus Trikonis (West Side Story) and Nancy Kwan (Flower Drum Song) and Ross Hagan

It was also called

A Fistful of Feathers (probably a play on A Fistful of Dynamite aka Duck You Sucker)
Fowl Play
Superchicken

Good morning, all! I have a day at the NYPL and an evening with our DR Ben to watch the wonderful Helen Mirren as Margery Pinchwife, the eponymous character of Wycherly's bawdy comedy The Country Wife. On my walk to NYPL today, I will stop by the pharmacy for more drugs, and at Lincoln Center, I'll begin my last foray through the 1903-1905 Townsend Walsh scrapbooks for BABES IN TOYLAND. I need to get my footnotes all in line and I pray to God the missing scrapbook, mislaid since their move back to Lincoln Center in 2002, has been located and is back to its corrrect shelf space.

TOD: OKLAHOMA!, which I think is still as fresh as it was in 1943, is my favorite score and my favorite show is probably CAROUSEL. The great revival of SOUTH PACIFIC last year proved the show was much greater than I had lately thought it to be. I don't have a favorite song: I loved Richard Rodgers' music. Period.

Amazon.fr sent me yesteday the most wonderful recording Folies dansantes chez Offenbach, which is a new recording of the stock dance arrangements from Offenbach's shows - polkas, quadrilles, waltzes, etc. - published between 1850-and 1880. On the PHI editions of BABES IN TOYLAND and THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER, we had planned to include the stock dance arrangements for those shows, so I'm happy that the new Offenbach Edition is setting a precedence for this.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The King & I is my favorite.

I do like the score to/for Carousel, but whenever I've seen the show live (on stage), it's always seemed just a bit too long or something else to me.  -And I'm still not sure if it's the piece or the productions I saw.

And, yes, of course, Flower Drum Song/i] will always hold a special place in my heart.

DR Sam are the Wolf spider’s biting you?  I’m shocked you have them.  We had them in our first Michigan house, scary looking things.  Craig & I caught them & put them outside.  Bryan who was our official mouse catcher & release person would not go near them.  For awhile he wouldn’t sleep in his bedroom since that was their room of choice, not that I blame him.  I found a Black Widow in my bedroom when I was young slept in my brother’s room that night.

Dear Jane, someone told me they were wolf spiders, I really don't know, nasty looking ugly brown things.

Had them in the apartment in Hollywood too.  We were on the 6Th floor and I think they lived in the l00 foot pine trees right outside the window, and would blow in from the heavy winds. In this building the bottle brush looking tree, touches the bathroom and bedroom windows, again I think that's were they come from.

Every apartment building I ever lived in always had pest control spray every month, and then someone figured out how to make money on a huge settlement  for getting sick.  Now no one sprays in rental buildings.  Too afraid of getting sued.

TOD:

I fell in love with The King and I when the movie came out.  The libretto to the show was in our English literature textbook in high school.  In college, I saw a production in Los Angeles starring Constance Towers and Daren McGaven.  Surprisingly, the Night Stalker was a terrific king, and I decided then and there that "Shall We Dance" was the most erotic scene in any musical.  (For movies, I'd have to say the final scene on the island between Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom in the last Pirates movie.)

Joe and I loved the Broadway version with Donna Murphy and Lou Diamond Phillips, and one of my favorite CDs is the cast recording of it by some record producer or other.  I hear Donna doesn't do her own whistling.   ;D

Favorite songs?  "Love, Look Away", "Hello, Young Lovers", "Younger Than Springtime", "Like a God", "You've Got to Be Carefully Taught", "I Cain't Say No"  (and Julie Andrews' version, "I Cahn't Say Cain't")

Back to my Alphabetical Musicals Project:

After Debby did Dallas I finally got to Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, my favorite Jacque Demi/Michel Legrand score.  I first saw it when it came out with subtitles, and later one of the networks aired the British release which had the entire score sung in English.  I have it somewhere in a box on a reel-to-reel.  Although Gene Kelly didn't do his own singing in the French version (only Danielle Dariuex did--she, by the way, took over for Hepburn when she left Coco on Broadway), he sang on the Englilsh track, as I believe did George Chakiris and Grover Dale.

My memory of the English version is that it was a terrific translation, rendering a lot of the word-play of the original which was lost in the subtitles;  e.g, when Maxence says he has he is going to Nante on leave (a perme, he jokes "j'ais une perme à Nante", une permanante = a permanent.  The translation changes the city and he sings "I was born to lose in Toulouse".  Even the dinner scene, in which the banal conversation is entirely in classical alexandrine verse, is rendered thus in the English.  There is even a gratuitous pun when Gene Kelly sings, "So long, Solange."

I'm sure our French members could point out more examples, but one of the fun things about Demi is his sense of humor--not just obvious things like the deus ex machina fairy godmother in Peau d'Ane arriving in a helicopter, but jokes in the coördination of the sets and costumes in Les Parapluies de Cherbourg.  And of course, Les Demoiselles is one long extended joke of potential lovers constantly passing like ships in the night.

I only wish the CD had more of the score and the songs were all in the right order.  Hint, hint!

I walked to the River and along the Hudson. It was wonderful.

I then came home, got the mail, walked over to Time-Warner and paid the cable bill.

I walked down the block and had a small sample of pizza from a man in front of a Pizzeria who was handing out samples.

I then walked through Madison Square Park looking at the Dog Run and seeing happy dogs playing in the sun.

I walked over to 6th Avenue and down the street and came home.

I just paid Con Ed, Verizon and my Equity dues and Anthony's Equity dues. The Internet is a wonderful thing!

I will now take a shower and prepare for my evening with the wonderful, witty and wild Larry Moore.

Later, gaters.

At the office yesterday after luch, I began feeling the oncome of a sore throat.  By the time I got home it was worse and then by late evening I had a fever.  When I woke up this morning my throat felt like I had swallowed glass shards and I've just felt overall crappy the whole day.  I just woke up from a nap and I feel a little bit better.

It sucks because it is such a beautiful day out and I had planned to do some cleaning in the back yard.

vixmom just called me.  She is out of the hospital.  The doctors wanted her to get some fresh air and start walking, so vixdad took her to Sunken Meadow Park, and she walked on the boardwalk a while with her walker, came home and called me, and is going to lie down for a while.  They want her to stay home from work for two weeks but try to get some walking in.  It's not the walking that hurts, she said, but the getting up and down.  btw the gall bladder problem was entirely unrelated to the chemo.

Since Joe has been doing his doctor-ordered walking in the same park--although he hasn't been there yet this year--he offered to drive her there during the week. They can both take out their walkers and do a production of The Producers.

Back from errands and whatnot.  Unbelievably awful traffic everywhere in this stupid city.  I mean EVERYWHERE.  Dead standstill traffic.  Apparently, this weekend if rife with expos and big events all over the city.  Frankly, I don't care how many of those there are, it doesn't really explain why traffic on the 101 going both east and west would be backed up from downtown LA to the 405 going west, and from the 405 to downtown going east.

I must now watch a motion picture on DVD - not for pleasure, but for work as regards the next Kritzerland soundtrack release.  The LP version of this film soundtrack had most of the tracks in an order completely unrelated to how the music is in the film - sometimes that's fine, but in this case it doesn't make for a good listening experience.  For example, the film's musical prologue is first on the LP - the main titles that should follow that track are, in fact, the last cut on side two of the LP.  That's just ridiculous.  So, I'm making note of the film order and if it plays better that way, I'm changing the track order - if not, I'll leave it as is, save for moving the main title back where it belongs.

While I ate lunch, I watched last night's FLASHPOINT. It was a rerun, but since I only recently started watching the show, it was all new to me. Henry Czerny was the primary guest star, and like usual with this show, I was wiping away big tears by the time it was over. These poor people pushed into impossible situations and trying anything to keep their heads above water and running afoul of the law.

A really compassionate cop show which is very unique in today's TV climate.

Indeed.  We are having a drop-dead gorgeous day, as Ben indicated above, and Joe had planned on washing the cars and/or mowing the lawn.  He got up at 7:300, did two loads of laundry, cleaned the kitchen, and then got zapped by his disease:  equilibrium loss, fuzzy vision, dizziness, all the usual things that happen when the weather changes from good to bad or from bad to good.  He is down for the count, probably for the rest of the day.

At least we have fans in all the windows to air out the house.

After looking around a few thrift stores I headed over to the Indian restaurant on the north side. I was hitting on chatting with one of the Punjabi guys who works there and inquired as to whether he knew Hindi and/or Urdu as I had some vintage Bollywood movie booklets I wanted him to decipher for me (sort like coming over to see my etchings   8)  ).

Just as I had Vikram in the palm of my hand (figuratively speaking) in walked an older Indian woman. Vikram new her and a let me know that she would likely be a good one to have do the translating, and he offered to go and speak to her for me. She was meeting a group of friends for lunch so of course I didn't want to bother her.

Vikram insisted, telling me that she loves old Bollywood movies and she is a professor at the college.

Looks like I will be going to memsaab Kantal's house for dinner and translation later on this week.

Kantal is actually quite a fascinating lady and I know I will enjoy getting to know her. She is working on her second novel, which depicts the pllight of widows after the Partition in India in 1947.

Kantal was actually witness to that historic and tragic moment and she lost much of her family during it. She was only ten years old at the time.

Well, now it's time for me to leave work, get something to eat, then work concessions for Masterworks Choral Ensemble: Spring Time: Modern Style (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/calendar/calendar_detail.asp?event_id=1033).

Quote
We all long to return to a simpler time, a more innocent age. So it was with John Rutter when he decided to compile a collection of his favorite folk songs from the British Isles. As he puts it, traditional songs form a “common musical currency.”

For Springtime, Masterworks performs Rutter’s collection, “The Sprig of Thyme,” alongside Jonathan Willcocks’ modern composition, “Lux Perpetua.” In “Lux Perpetua” the solemn threat and heavy tread of war is powerfully interspersed with tender prayers for peace. This timeless work calls us to reflect on the significance of peace and unity in our lives today.

I don't know how much of it I'll actually get to see.  When working concessions, we have to have things cleaned up before we can go in to watch.  And if there's an intermission, we have to leave before the end of the first part/act to set up for intermission.  Fortunately, this isn't a performance that I specifically asked to see, but I will be able to hear it from the lobby.

I think so too, DR Jane.  On the 9th of May we'll be working with Lite Forms. http://www.liteform.com/  The Habitat people said they are really fun to work with, sort of like playing with Legos.  sounds good to me

Have a blast :)

I spent the evening watching three movies. I can't say much about the first one except that it was a thrill to see it again after so long. I had forgotten so much in decades away from it.

The second one was QUANTUM OF SOLACE on Blu-ray which I was watching for the second time. I liked it a little more this second time around. I still thought Bond's final fight with his nemesis was ludicrous and the Bonds girls weren't very interesting at all.

But now that Bond has put Vespa Lynn behind him, maybe the next one will be a little lighter in tone.

I finished my evening with the 1931 PRIVATE LIVES from the Warner Archive collection. Yes, it's an old video master cluttered with age specks and debris (though the second half of the film looks better than the first). And the primitive sound of the time is hissy and fizzy.

But sharpness is OK and it looks certainly as good as the TCM broadcast version. In fact, this IS the broadcast version since the disc begins with the Turner logo.

Had a wonderful evening! Dinner at Artie's with physical dish(es) and other dish then a 1977 BBC Production of

The Country Wife (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Country_Wife)

It's a play I read in college and have never seen. Thank God for those Brits and Restoration plays. I don't know that many American actors could pull this off anymore. It's a lost art doing this kind of theatre.

At Intermission we had Little Pie Shop Pecan Pie and Hagen Daz Vanilla Ice Cream. I shall need an hour on the bike tomorrow to make up for that little treat.

Thank you, Elmore for a wonderful evening. The day was gorgeous and the film was a lovely way to end it.

She also told me a funny story about how, when she was 12, she was going to run away to Bombay with a group of prostitutes who she thought were movie stars.

Turned out they only worked as extras.  :D

How was she finally able to determine the difference?

I enjoy Dame Helen Mirran's performances, but I am distressed at her anti-American sentiments expressed here and there.  If that is the way she feels, she can stay home and earn her money in the Old Country.

I would enjoy hearing the Masterworks summer Show Tune Concert in June.  George, is that also at the Washington Center?

Yes.  As far as I know, they always perform their major concerts at the WCPA.

Good Evening!

Well, at least I had a wonderful post-show meal at FIG tonight...

The technology gods were not with me tonight in the pit. A very frustrating evening.  However, we did have a pretty full house, and we got a standing ovation tonight.

*And I have to thank Andrew (one of my bartenders) for pulling some strings in the kitchen tonight.  The Salted Caramel-Chocolate Pot de Crème is actually not on the menu yet.  A few nights ago, I noticed that some of the staff were sampling the new dessert.  Well, tonight I figured I might as well ask if there was still a "sample" in the kitchen, and, lo and behold, there was!

In other news...

As I was walking around downtown Charleston, I noticed there was a very pleasant scent in the air; it very floral and fresh.  Each time I passed by some flowers, I gave them a sniff to see if they were the source of the very pleasant odor.  Well, after a while, I suddenly realized what the scent was: lemon.  Then I remembered that I had bought a Yuzu scented soap at the Farmers Market, and since it was warm and sunny, it was being gently warmed in by bag which caused it to "diffuse".

I'm just amazed it took me four hours to realize that.  ::)

I was the head concessionaire this evening for the Masterworks Choral Ensemble.  There had been two other concessionaires signed up to work with me, but they didn't show up!  How rude!  Anyway, four of the regular ushers volunteered to help and we were able to handle the crowd.  I didn't go into the house to watch, but listening in the lobby, they sounded pretty good.
