Well, you've read the notes, the notes were kind of inexorable, and now it is time for you to post until the inexorable cows come home.

And the word of the day is: AUTODIDACT!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.

Morning all.
That is all.

-
Break a leg tonight with Jason Graae's show at the Colony. Hope you have the perfect show for the cd recording
-
I don't know from the TOD, so I shall await some other DR's choices with interest.

Today is of course a work day....and the day the Plaque for the Putnam County Playhouse is dedicated. I can't attend the ceremony which is at 10 a.m. since I am working.
Two oh wells.
Perhaps there will be photos.

Belated birthday wishes to La femme Jolie!!!
-
OMG, did I miss Sam's birthday too? And I posted that day, several times - I wonder if when I refreshed, it jumped a lot of posts.
-
So happy belated birthday, Sam. Hope you're still celebrating.
-
Yikes, I have my 17000th post coming next. Jrand, are you knowledgeable in "preserving" milestone posts?
-
I learned the truth at 17,000
-
No DR GEORGE can.....but I don't know how.
-
But congrats on 17000 DR FJL.
-
But congrats on 17000 DR FJL.
That means more than a preservation, thanks!

TOD:
I just remembered some very nice scenes in the movie MAURICE.

A nice waxed floss will do wonders for that Plaque. Or a minty dental tape.

Topic of the Day: I seem to recall a certain Shakespeare moment from DR Pogue.
Just kidding, I haven't given that foto a fifteenth thought.

Good morning, all! I have a day crammed with incident, mostly centered about Herbert's comic opera EILEEN. First thing, though, is a trip to Toyland for the materials I left there yesterday. At 1:30, I have meetings with the conductor David Brophy who's come from Dublin for these preliminary sessions, our producer, and William Hicks who was our pianist for the Herbert recordings of songs and piano-cello music. I'm downloading and listening to two recordings, "Gems of Irish Opera," with excerpts from 19th Century works by Balfe, Wallace, Stanford, and O'Dwyer, since I think these singers will be pushed at us for the EILEEN recording. Following the meeting, dinner with producer and conductor, and after that, I can hopefully return home and watch the final epsodes of LOVE FOR LYDIA, which I'm really enjoying.
As soon as the 2nd disc is downloaded, I'm off to Toyland.
-
Have fun DR ELMORE.
LOL DR FJL.
I am off to work.
Vibes for a fine show recording this evening for MR BK and company.
-
Good morning.

TOD:
The spaghetti-eating scene in LADY AND THE TRAMP.
::)
-
My niece and I both have fevers. :(
And tomorrow is her 2nd birthday party. Hopefully we will both be there!
-
Good morning, all. (It feels too early.)
-
TOD:
The food scene in "Tom Jones"
A few exchanges between Rick and Ilsa in "Casablanca"
And a few between Barbra Streisand and her fingernails in several movies.

LOL!
I believe it was DR Jose who asked about Friday the 13th. Well, I am at Toyland, and the materials I thought I brought home and hadn't are no longer on my desk, which means something bad has happened and I have no idea what! I swear I had no blackouts between leaving Toyland and catching the bus home. The choral arrangement, blank score paper, etc. are nowhere in this office. Hmmmm . . .
Well, I need to look carefully AGAIN through everything I brought home yesterday. Damnation!
-
TOD: I forgot to include the fervid way a drunken, delirious Jimmy Stewart looks at Katharine Hepburn in "The Philadelphia Story" before she tells him, "Put me in your pocket, Mike."

One more ...

Page two!

And the word of the day is: AUTODIDACT!
And The Song Of The Day(Night) Is: TEACH ME TONIGHT
-
Wouldn't the song have to be I'LL TEACH MYSELF TONIGHT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH?
-
Saturday morning greetings! It's a rainy day here in SW Ohio, the first of several from the looks of the weather forecast.
-
Wouldn't the song have to be I'LL TEACH MYSELF TONIGHT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH?
If you sing it to a mirror, like "I Believe in You," you wouldn't have to.

We'll take your rain.

Wouldn't the song have to be I'LL TEACH MYSELF TONIGHT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH?
If you sing it to a mirror, like "I Believe in You," you wouldn't have to.
As Cole Porter would have told it:
Each night I get the mirror from off the shelf
Each night I'm getting queerer chasing myself!
-
I have returned from Toyland, and the music I thought I dragged home yesterday was sitting on my desk where I'd left it when I came in yesterday. What's run away with my mind?
That's the power of Friday the Thirteenth, baby!
Let us pray this meeting this afternoon goes better than my life has the past two days! I've listened to the "Gems of Irish Opera" discs and the singers, except for the baritone, are dreadful. A high wobbly soprano, a low wobbly alto, both with pich problems, and a reedy tenor who sounds like a wimp. Please God, don't let this be the top of the talent pool in Dublin!

Well, the trade-off is that it's now cooler outside, so we've turned off the AC and opened the windows.

Good Afternoon!
And three months from today, my brother Jay and his fiancée, Kristy, will be getting married. :)

I'm up after a wonderful night's sleep. I was awakened by the ringing of the telephonic device and I thought, "Who is calling me this early?" only to find out it was ten-thirty.

I had a very good night's sleep too. Alas, when I got up around 10:30 (my time), I remembered that I had to meet someone down at Columbus Circle to pick up some music. Thankfully, my bus and train karma were with me this morning.

DR elmore - Did you take the bus or train to and from Toyland? -I know that the A and C are messed up today, and since there are two streets fairs on the west side, a bunch of the bus lines are also being detoured. -And 57th Street is one huge construction zone from 6th Ave to 9th Ave.

Back from 2 trips to our local public library. On the first trip I returned 2 items and owned up to the fact that one of them was overdue and the clerk pointed out that I had one more book due today that I didn't have with me. She couldn't renew it because there was a hold on it. So I drove home, picked up said book, and returned it via the drop slot. Then I went to the grocery, where the parking lot was a ZOO. Glad to be home.

I'm not sure yet.
I'm starting to think about getting a new suit for the occasion. At least I have to time to get one and have it tailored - and to drop a few pounds too. ;)

We walked the dogs together this morning before the mail was delivered. since yogi is good on leash i was considering taking him with me to get the mail but we decided it is safer if i go alone. he might not be so good if we see another dog.

Now I need to get ready to head back to Carnegie Hall for tonight's concert by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. It's quite an interesting program - they've interspersed solo piano works by Back between the orchestral selections.

I took a taxi to Toyland this morning since I was in a hurry. Straight down Seventh Avenue.
I'n back from dinner with producer and conductor, who's a really lovely chap. We went over to 83rd and Amsterdam to Good Enough To Eat for dinner. It was excellent. I will meet them tomorrow at noon at the London Hotel on 54th Street to look over the Full Scores.
I will now watch the remainder of LOVE FOR LYDIA.

I emailed you--they're not actually bouncing. AOL and MSN like to make you *think* your emails aren't getting through. :)

Just had 24 hours of frustration with Amazon, an unusual event. I attempted to use two $25 giftcards to get the new Citizen Kane BD set free. The first gift card worked fine, the second gave me a string of different error codes culminating in one saying it had already been redeemed. I knew this wasn't the case and got a totally brain dead CS person who didn't even know about the Amazon Rewards Visa and the gift certificates they send. So after 24 hours and several phone calls/emails, I get this perfunctory answer saying it had already been redeemed, and they gave me the email address that had redeemed it. Not my email address. Just called and raised holy hell with them and they credited the order $25. I am now researching the "phantom" email address. It is an interesting email address--it is the plural surname of a famous mystery writer with the AOL domain.

I believe I rhymed "clearer" with "mirror" in "Judy's Solution" from "Starcrossed." It bothered me not one whit. :)

There hasn't been any other noise since that first big bang. I haven't seen anything, so I don't think that it was an explosion...but boy, was it loud!

I've spent most of the evening cleaning off my bookshelves and trying to straighten and rearrange and I've kicked up a lot of dust. I am trying to cull some books, but they sure are hard to part with.
-
We just had a loud crash of thunder, George - only three hours later!
-
I'm on a LOVE FOR LYDIA break. These last two episodes are heartbreaking. There's a secondary character, Bert aka Blackie, whose loyalty and inability to express himself are pathetic, and the actor is so wonderful in his shyness. These episodes are interesting in the development of the leading lady from a selfish self-indulgent flapper to a sadder-but-wiser woman. I think I will read the novel soon.

Good evening!! Enjoying my last night here. It's kind of crazy around the hotel. Obama will be staying here so the security has already started being beefed up. one of the staff members told me about it, quite interesting. I am concerned about the airport tomorrow. They started tightening security today and I heard that it's taking a couple hours to get in and through security. Tomorrow all the bbq people will be leaving and I imagine it will be worse. Oh great
-
When I came in my room tonight everything had been straightened and moved around. It's a little unnerving since it hasn't really happened the last two nights
-
I went to the hospitality room tonight and heard stories about people out drinking until 3:30 in the morning. I was very glad I wasn't with them last night. I went to the restaurant in the hotel, got a nice steak and came up to the room. I am most content to just relax
-
I went to almost all the classes today. I have really learned a lot from this conference. When I come back next year, I'll do more sight seeing
-
DR Cillaliz - when I was a very young librarian, my boss Mrs. Brown and I both went to San Francisco for ALA, but not together. I was very diligent about attending sessions and combing the exhibit hall. I just finished watching it, with a FANTASTICKS ending in a snowfall and Lydia sharing her shawl to keep them warm. It's a great 13-part trip, about 12 hours, I'd guess, and the cast is wonderful. The last scene of the spinster aunt is heartbreaking as she comes and goes in dementia, and Mel Martin's young orphan Lydia, who grows up too fast in the jazz age, is wonderful. The leading man is hard to like since he's a fool until he grows up and it's really his story, very British, class-conscious, nostalgic, clearly the work of a writer looking back 30 years to when he was young, callow, and priggish. t's extremely well done. I disliked most of the characters for the first four episodes and then I couldn't stop watching to see what would happen.

LOL Ginny. Since I'm still learning immigration law and had some specific questions about current cases, I really wanted to attend all the classes and since I got the answers I was looking for, I'm glad I did. when I go to the criminal defense meetings I take more time off to tour because I know the law much better. I'm sure I'll do that at these meetings in the future, but for now, I want to keep learning.

a little before 2:00 pm. It's just an hour and a half flight. Thanks for the travel vibes. I'm sure it will be fine. Then it's another 1 1/2 hour drive and I"ll be home. I'm ready to go home. I do have time to have breakfast and take my time to find a cab before heading out.

I will say that I have had a ton of fun during this trip. I didn't do the typical tourist things, but the time at the Barbeque fest last night, the dinner the night before and just spending time with the wonderful people I met at the conference was excatly what I needed right now.

The cats are being cared for by Sharon, my cat/housesitter. She's been doing that for me since 2002. Her business is called Critter Sitters. The cats know her well and she has no problem giving Callie her meds. I called her today and other than someone spitting up (Boo, no doubt) all is well.

Good Evening!
Tonight's concert at Carnegie Hall was good, but also quite interesting for a number of reasons. This was the last concert in the "Spring For Music" series. Any orchestra that was interested in being invited to Carnegie Hall for this series was asked to submit a program, and the orchestras were selected based on the programming. The programs over the past two weeks had a theme: dance rhythms, mythology, poetry, etc. Tonight's theme was "symphony" - or at least the evolution of the symphony. However, Maestro Nagano went back to the root of the word symphony, and he presented a program of various ways notes sound - either in unison or in "reaction" to each other. Well...
The first half of the program consisted of orchestral works by Gabrieli, Webern and Stravinsky, interspersed with solo keyboard works of J.S. Bach. The whole "symphony" theme seemed a bit stretched, but the playing of the orchestra was quite good. Alas, the piano soloist's approach to Bach was a bit too improvisatory for my taste. There were places where it almost sounded like she had take all sense of rhythm and beat out of the pieces.
The second half consisted of one work: Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. It's a true chestnut of the repertoire, but the Maestro seemed to be on a mission to un-cliché it. There were some interesting tempo choices, and change of tempo choices. And just when you thought the piece couldn't go any faster in a section, well... A thrilling if somewhat puzzling interpretation.
Thankfully, they ended up playing two encores. The first was Fauré's "Sicilienne" from "Pelleas et Melissande" - which was taken at a nice clip too. The second was a bit of Berlioz, "Le Corsair", and that was truly some of the best playing of the evening. The Montreal Symphony Orchestra made a name for themselves playing Berlioz under their previous Musical Director, Charles Dutoit, and it was nice to hear some of that "old school" sound and mentality to close out the evening.

After the concert, we went out for a late dinner with two of the violinists in the orchestra who happened to know my friend, Eric - who was also there tonight - and my friend, Brendan, who was also in attendance and happens to be a violinist... AND happens to be playing Beethoven 5 on a concert tomorrow afternoon. The food was great, the wine flowing and the conversation verged on scandalous at times. In other words, a perfect close to a wonderful evening. :)
