Title: MAY I?
Post by: bk on May 01, 2006, 12:19:54 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you now have the important information that it is May, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they May, or they May not.

I really hate when I put off writing a paper until the night before it's due. I hate it, I tell you.

And I don't even understand what it's about.

I was being industrious this evening and was on the floor sorting some things prior to packing them away for storage.

And what do you think happened?

I leaned forward and pinched a nerve...or pulled a muscle...or something.

And it hurt like hell.

And it's now giving me grief.
Title: Re:MAY I?
Post by: Ron Pulliam on May 01, 2006, 01:11:44 AM
The pinch/pull is in my left side...just above the hip in my lower back.

Drat!

I know it will get better.

I just won't get better TONIGHT/THIS MORNING.
Title: Re:MAY I?
Post by: Ron Pulliam on May 01, 2006, 01:12:29 AM
And I've been to bed...and found a couple of comfy positions...that remain comfy for about 15 minutes.  And then I get up and go drink some water 'cause for some reason I'm thirsty.

So...I do what all good Hainsies/Kimlets do...I come here and pour out my troubles and ills.

And it makes me feel better.

What I don't want is a bunch of sympathy or "aw, gees..."  I'm not doing it for that.

I just enjoy expressing myself while it's bothering me.

And it makes it feel all better.

It's amazing how wide awake one can be when sleeping isn't comfortable.

I've used a heat pad for about 30 minutes.  It was restful but I didn't fall asleep.  And now I'm wide awake again.

I can walk...I just can't stand straight up...almost...but not quite...and it's most disconcerting/discomfiting.

A late good morning, all!  I woke at 6:30 with the alarm and decided I had no reason to move for a while, and now it's nearly two hours later.  Oy!

I haven't decided what to do today.  I'm thinking I may continue my housecleaning, and sort through more piles of books and other junk.

DR RonPulliam, I hope the pain goes away soon.  When I had the really awful nerve problem in my leg before surgery in 2004, the emergency room gave me some muscle relaxant that was quite amazing.  I may have been on Vicodin as well; it's all a blur now.  I hope you're calling your doctor this morning.

TOD:

I'll have to think a bit about my best and favorite dessert, but I will say that the only dessert I had all weekend was a couple of Klondike bars.  I bought a box at Shop-Rite--twelve to a box, on sale for $1.99.  They are smallish, but dayam, they are good!  The perfect chocolate coating on a nice fluffy slab of vanilla ice cream.  Yum!

Title: Re:MAY I?

I'd have to say my favorite dessert is the Fried tempura Ice Cream at Planet Sushi, where they actually flame the ice cream right there at your table.  They always ask me if I'm going to share it with someone else at the table, and they bring extra spoons - and I especially like it when no one else want any.  :)

On a less gourmet note, there's the exquisite bread pudding chunks (emphasis on chunk) or the Apple ChimiCheesecake at Applebee's.  The bread pudding is like having the most delicious french toast as a dessert, and even I can't eat it alone.  The ChimiCheesecake is a chimichanga stuffed with apples and ricotta cheese (so with those ingredients, it must be healthy).

I'm beginning to think I'm alone in thinking BACK TO THE BEACH, starring the venerable Avalon, Funicello and Stevens, is actually a well-made movie.   Others seem to see it as a camp hoot.

My favorite exchange (I am paraphrasing, though):

Connie:  Frankie is the type of guy you'd never be able to catch without a net

Frankie:  Connie, you know Annette, don't you?

Here's hoping the back pain eases for DR Ron Pulliam. I have had the same thing happen to me doing normal things like bending down to put on tennis shoes or bending down to turn the taps off in the shower.

It usually takes a week to 10 days for my back to get back to anything like normal. I just had one of these "pulls" a month or two ago.

I finished watching PHANTOM OF THE RUE MORGUE....one of the WB followups to the highly successful HOUSE OF WAX...

I wonder which of the following was the MOST astonishing in 3-D:

a.  Gorilla coming at ya!
b.  Patricia Medina's bosom
c.  rifle fire at the camera
d.  Karl Malden's nose

During the early hours of the morning while I was finishing up my net surfing and then this morning, I've gotten a great desire to watch THE WONDRFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM. I recorded the movie off TCM a couple of years ago, but I have no idea how it will look on the larger screen TV.

(I saw the laserdisc for it up for auction last night on Ebay which is what got me to thinking about it. I remember reviews said the laserdisc was pale and soft and not very appealing. I remember thinking the Turner broadcast looked OK, so I'll be anxious to see what it looks like this afternoon.)

I did not.  Due to the ongoing problems with the slowly dying "cooker'  (as Vixdad calls it) I dared not entrust such an important thing as a birthday cake to the fickle oven (it is being replaced this coming Saturday) I did however order her a lovely round yellow cake with white buttercream icing and  blue roses encircling the words "Happy13th Birthday Vicky".  the filling was also buttercream.  The cake was chosen by the birthday girl herself.  Pictures were taken but they have not yet been downloaded and in any event I am at the wrong computer (work vs home).

It was a lovely cake made by the bakery at our local Waldbaum's grocery store and admired by all and delicious to boot!!

What a swell review for Last Starfighter! Congrats to our boys!

Desserts, huh? I'm partial to ice cream... but I usually buy the Safeway Cherry Chocolate Chip Non-Fat Frozen Yogurt... I do favor quantity over quality, so a half-gallon of this stuff is a nice way to spend an evening.

There is a sensational Tiramisu (I have become quite the tiramisu maven, just by-the-way) at the Italian restaurant on the corner of Dairy Road and Hana Hwy, Kahalui, Maui - the very best I ever had. It costs $9. It's worth it. I have learned to order that, first. After dessert, if I'm still hungry, I might order an appetizer or a sandwich.

I love those little frozen Sara Lee frozen chocolate covered cheesecake bites. Only at other people's houses... can't bring a box home - hell, they never even MAKE IT home...

A Dairy Queen cone - just vanilla - brightens up a day of misery quite a bit...

So it's officially BELTANE! That is the fertility/spring festival halfway between the Spring equinox and summer solstice. I think it's Celtic. That's the one where people jump over a bonfire and ring-around-the-maypole. I feel migratory - on Wednesday I'll mosey up to Washington, to the cabin. Gonna take my sweet time - 3 days instead of the usual 2. I will definitely stop by at Jane and Keith's to look at the new kitchen and all the remodeling.

So tonight, I'm going to be one of the very first to hear the New Play from the pen of our BK! I do look forward to it.

Vixdad told her that since we weren't old enough to be the parents of a teenager we had decided that this year she would be "12A" and we would put off 12 for another year!

Yesterday she said, "I still feel 12!'

The strange thing about that LOST contest, DR Jen, is that there's no mention of it at ABC.com.  And does the U.K. really get to see episodes a day ahead of the U.S.?  I donno...

Interesting thing about dessert at my folks' yesterday.  There was a fruit-topped tart and a chocolate mousse cake, but everyone went for the fruit tart rather than the chocolate.  Highly unusual.  And for the main courses, most of us went for the tuna over the quiches and pasta (and even the cream cheese and lox was just sitting there like so much fish).

ANIMAL LOVERS ALERT!

Quote
COCOA MULCH

Sent to us by Meagan Karnes, of Fur Crazy Pet Care.

Yesterday, one of our clients experienced a tragedy and wanted me to pass a special message along to all of my dog loving friends and family.
I was hoping you could forward this to your contact list.

My client was the doting owner of two young lab/golden retriever mixes. Over the weekend, they purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. They set the bag in their yard.

Their dog, Calypso, decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat so she broke into it and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical of her when she would get into something she shouldn't have gotten in to. She was not acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's website, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs. Denise (Calypso's mom) wanted me to pass this information along so no one had to experience the same tragedy she went through.

In Loving Memory of Calypso.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on eachindividual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."

Hersey's comment is not much comfort to the owners of the 1 in fifty dogs who will eat it!

Yes, PennyO, it is an ancient Celtic festival.

DR MARIA sorry you didn't find LITTLE EGYPT your cuppa.  Maybe the subject is more intriguing than the work.

Taking a quick break. Just time enough to say that Little Egypt is not about that Little Egypt. The title refers to an area in southern Illinois where the Wabash, the Ohio, and the Mississippi rivers meet. (The southernmost part of this area is a place called Cairo.) That's all I know. You can look the rest up on Google if it's of interest.

I watched the first hour of THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF THE BROTHERS GRIMM. The frame story of the brothers may not be very interesting, but those fairy tales are just delightful.

True to my memory, the TCM print shown was wonderfully wide (I suspect taken from the 35mm print used for the general release, but it looks wider to my eyes than the reduced 35mm HOW THE WEST WAS WON transfer). Sadly, it has faded pretty badly with almost all of the color drab and uninteresting. I do love all the CInerama point-of-view shots they've thrown in.

I remember at one of the Warner chats that the execs knew the film was in terrible shape and needed a complete restoration which they didn't seem convinced was going to ever happen. A shame.

Good Afternoon!

So...  I left The Palace Theatre around 10:45 Saturday night... Then drove down to DC...  I dropped a friend off who was making the drive down with me...  Then I went ahead and decided to go ahead and make the rest of the drive down to Richmond that night/morning...  I called my friend, Mike - he's a night manager for a hotel - and was able to crash at his place, so...  I drove down to Richmond... Got in around 6:00am...  Ended up sleeping until 4:30 Sunday afternoon...  Headed over to Steve's for some dinner...  Stayed over at Steve's last night...  Headed back up to Fairfax this morning...  Made a stop at my storage unit... Made a stop at IKEA...  And about an hour ago, I met my new niece, Emily Juliet!  :)

-And the weather has been glorious for my two days off so far too!  -Of course, I practically slept through most of yesterday...  ;)

Well, I'm actually in the midst of babysitting - Emily is sleeping right now, so...

I hope everyone is doing well.  VIBES to those who need them.  I should be getting back to my quasi-normal routine of reading and posting and sitting there like so much fish as the week progresses.

Some nifty dialog courtesy co-writer Jeffrey Hatcher.

Back from the editing room - the video has now been uprezzed, which took about three hours.  That's all he could get done today, so tomorrow he finishes letterboxing everything.  At noon, I do the audio session with a proper audio guy, and I know I'll be much happier with things after that's done.  Then, all that's left to do is the audio layback onto the video and to color correct a few scenes - then we're done, probably by Wednesday or Thursday.

Am thinking about taking a quick jog now, so I'm in the proper mode for the play reading (the play opens with a middle-aged Jew getting back from jogging).

A beverage for you all to try....

IT is called Canadian Snowball

In a large cup fill 2/3 with dark brewed hot, hot coffee, add a scoop of ice cream, whipped cream (optional) drizzle with chocolate syrup, pepperming syrup or crushed candy canes. Chocolate shaving on top.

It is good. The local coffeeshop makes it. They are my down fall

I have made it at home and have put a small shot of Canadian Windsor or Jameson's in it!
