Title: THE PLAY READING
Post by: bk on May 02, 2006, 12:12:16 AM
Well, you've read the notes, we read the play, and now everyone has read something, so now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're reading a new play right now, and then they'll be on their way.

                 ***HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FJL!***

I just got home from a very long evening of judging student films. Interesting. But around four and a half hours....

TOD - Mildred Natwick and  "Cuddles" Sakall, to begin with. What a cute couple they would've made! More character actors in the morning. They don't make them like they used to, that's for sure.

Good morning, all!  After Fred's simple unaffected mentions of his natal day on Sunday, it would be a shame if we forgot it!

I'm about ready to make the trip to Toyland this morning, with a stop at the NYPL Theatre Collection planned this afternoon.  Beyond that, I will wait to see what fresh hell the day brings.

TOD:
  Ruth McDevitt
  Edna Mae Oliver
  Doro Merande
  Una O'Connor
  William Demarest

I spoke to our Danise last night.  She sends her love to all.  She has a lot on her plate right now but will try and stop in from time to time to say howdy.  She sounds good and strong and says she is healing well.  Her 87 year old mom is having issues and her dog Bear is still mourning the loss of Brandi so she is doing some major caregiving.

So please send Vibes to our dear Danise!

Got some scoop on IDOL.

Tonight the singers do two songs each. One must be from the year of their birth. The other must come from any of the current Billboard charts,

Here's what seems to be shaping up for tonight's songs:

Chris will reportedly be doing Staind's "Right Here" and Cheap Trick's "I Want You To Want Me."

Katharine will be doing "Black Horse and The Cherry Tree" along with "Against All Odds."

Taylor: "Who Says You Can't Go Home," and "Play That Funky Music."

Paris: SOS and Prince's "Kiss."

Elliott: "On Broadway" and a Michael Buble song.

Re: "American Idol" songs.

One of my LEAST favorite songs of all time is "On Broadway".

Something's amiss, too, with this being a song from the year of his birth....I heard this song back in the early 1960s....Elliott is only 27 or 28....he couldn't have been born before 1978.

Woddy Allen had pretty much been the only recent film maker who would stock his movies with character actors, but nowadays, he seems to favor younger vanilla faces.

I've been trying to think of some current day character actors:

Helen Hanft
Harriet Harris
John C. Reilly

Randall "Tex" Cobb - the gigantic and charismatic ex-heavyweight boxer whom you may remember as The Motorcycle Rider in RAISING ARIZONA. He shows up in some quirky films, now and again.

Joan Cusack - actually, one of my favorite actresses. I still think she was robbed when she didn't get her Oscar for IN AND OUT.

Of course, Thelma Ritter and Eric Blore and Edward Everett Horton and a bunch of those folks whose names I shockingly cannot recall, from the Golden Age of Studio System Rep Company movies...

Okay - so a little caffeine, and I'm ready to talk about The Play.

I think it's some of Bruce's best work. Nothing like a muse to amuse... It's an old-fashioned comedy, with very no-holds-barred confrontation of real issues - which I feel I can't discuss here, because it would spoil it.

Some very strong writing - the strongest is the lead male character. Bruce read it very well - no surprise. There is a long speech that ends Act I that took my breath away... Some of the most raw and vulnerable writing I've read of his.

Barbara D is funny in the Thelma Ritter part - I said, and I MEAN IT!!! that I would arm-wrestle her for that role! I do think that the role of The Girl has to be cast very carefully - it's a tricky task. The character is so layered, very complicated - if she doesn't come off completely lovable, for all her very odd proclivities, there's an odd feeling about the ending. I think someone like the young Goldie Hawn, the young Meg Ryan could pull it off. Ah! Goldie's daughter!! That could work! And Cindy Williams for The Friend! But she'd have to arm-wrestle me...

I know it was a cold-as-ice reading, but though she is adorable and cute, Tammy didn't really ever quite "get" this character - as I said, it is a very complicated role.

Some time back the TOD was the first gay character you remembered seeing in a movie or tv show.  At the time I really couldn't remember having that moment of realization, but last night it came to me as Rodzinski and I were watching tv.

Mr. Green from the movie Clue- definitely my and my sister's first gay character although depending on the ending he wasn't gay.  I just remember liking his character and thinking that gay men were all shy and soft spoken.  I must have been around 10-12 years old when we started watching the movie give or take a year or two.

I don't get it.....

Quote
NEW YORK -- Take a deep breath. David Blaine's latest stunt is spending a week living in an 8-foot acrylic sphere filled with water.

The 33-year-old magician, shirtless and with an oxygen tube in his mouth, slid into his snow globe-like "human aquarium" Monday at Lincoln Center.

In a week, he will remove the device and attempt to hold his breath underwater longer than the record of 8 minutes, 58 seconds.

He also will try to escape from 150 pounds of chains and handcuffs during the breath-holding finale, which will air live in a two-hour ABC special, "David Blaine: Drowned Alive," on May 8 (8 p.m. EDT).

"As a kid, I always was obsessed with Houdini," Blaine explained Monday.

"I don't think about death, but I am prepared for it," he said, adding that his only fear is "the fear of the unknown."

Blaine said he started training in December, with some help from U.S. Navy SEALS. He lost 50 pounds so his body would require less oxygen.

The water in the sphere will be kept at a balanced temperature to help keep his core temperature near 98.6 degrees. His gear includes a diving helmet that allows two-way communication with his support team.

Blaine invites visitors to stop by and wave at him. The water should be nice and clear; he will be fed and, uh, relieve himself by tubes.

His previous feats of endurance include balancing on a small platform for 35 hours, being buried alive in a see-through coffin for a week and surviving inside a massive block of ice for 61 hours. In 2003, he fasted for 44 days in a suspended acrylic box over the Thames River in London.

Have any of our New York DR's wandered by for a gander of this "spectacle"?

I agree.  And I think these "endurance tests" for no good reason are stupid (maybe that's just the mother in me talking....! :D) and certainly don't qualify as "magic"!  Now if he had gotton people to pledge money for every hour he spent in there and then donated all that money to some worthy cause  I would look more kindly upon this endeavor.

Re: last night's MEDIUM.

.
.
.

I really liked last night's show and found it completely chilling.
It was interesting how so much information was not given to us with only 15 minutes remaining (as seems to be the norm lately).

It was also interesting how we did not see or know the killer until the end.

I thought Molly Ringwald was really good as the blind woman. And I really enjoyed how the case played out.

And while it was clear that there was some connection between the guy in jail and the blind woman, the writers did not tell us about the girl and the blindfold until 15 minutes till the end of the show.

I'm not sure why the DA still doubts alison. I don't think he does per se. He just needs proof before he understands.  It does seem odd sometimes. But since alison's dream so often don't make sense at first, i suppose it makes sense.

I have a cure for that!

Quote
New Delhi, India (AHN) - Pepsi has been fined more than 100,000 rupees in compensation by a city consumer court, after a man found a condom in his sealed bottle of the softdrink.

The Press Trust of India reports a consumer group spokesperson as stating, "This case is an eye-opener for others who are engaged in manufacturing soft dirinks and are required to mantain the prescribed standards of purity in pulblic interest during the course of their business."

The man who reported the complaint began suffering from severe dyspepsia and headache as well as insomnia after drinking from the bottle.

I don't know if anyone saw MadTV last weekend, but they did a Medium spoof where the husband freaked out from being repeatedly woken up by her dreams and the DA constantly doubted and questioned her.  The women coming to her in her dreams kept getting murdered and were bringing her mapquest directions to the next crime.  Still no respect from the DA.  It was pretty funny.

Back just for a moment before I toddle off to the audio mix.

Love PennyO's comments.  The Tammy issue is really complex.  She was the role model for the character, and there's a lot of her in it.  On the other hand, I wrote it and I wrote it the way the play dictated, so there is this whole other element that just took her aback - that and the fact that some of the stuff hit very close to home for her (in terms of the character's craziness).  Whether she has the sand to really pull it off on stage remains to be seen.  I believe with a good deal of work she could, because I tailored it for her - but after last night I'm not sure anymore.  I suppose time will tell.

I'm disappointed in the reviews for Drowsy Chaperone as well, although as Larry said (to paraphrase) it's a matter of taste. As much as I loved the show I know it's not to everyone's fancy. I have a couple of friends who saw it and were underwhelmed. I still love it and got great pleasure from seeing it. I hope it's successful.

I saw many reviews through CAST-REC List and it got better reviews from smaller papers and from Variety.

I think Clive Barnes needs to retire. What a sad old toad (yes, I said it and I mean it). Why is this man still taking up a theatre seat and actually having his reviews printed for the general public? But then he was the first string Theatre Critic for the New York Times in 1971 and panned Follies.

Clive Barnes is probably still coasting on the power his name had back in the 1970's and has managed to keep a career going.

I think Michael Riedel is the Post's real theater power, though.  The Post seems to have real impact on the theater gossip beat, for worse or for worse.

California -156 years ago!

Do you know what happened this week back in 1850, in California?

* California became a state.
* The State had no electricity.
* The State had no money.
* Almost everyone spoke Spanish.
* There were gun fights in the streets.

So basically, it was just like California today except the women had real breasts and men didn't hold hands.

I had thought if I got something interesting DVD-wise in the mail, I'd watch it this afternoon, but since I got NO mail today, I  went ahead with my plans to watch BURNT OFFERINGS.

As a Dan Curtis-haunted house story, it's par for the course, more like a made-for-TV movie except with big stars of the time (Karen Black, Oliver Reed, Bette Davis, Eileen Heckhart, Burgess Meredith) and thus was shown in theaters.

But this MGM enhanced DVD is one of the weirdest transfers. I guess this is the way the movie was filmed (I did see it in theaters, but it was too long ago for me to remember clearly), but all the exteriors are very soft focus, almost as if they're being filmed through gauze. Some of the interiors are soft, too, and then some are sharp. All of it looks very dated on DVD, however.

SOme good and bad news. I read today that ABC's COMMANDER -IN-CHIEF has been pulled from the ABC schedule for the rest of May. The show had three more episodes to air this season, and now, they're in limbo. ABC has said they may air during the summer, but this is decidedly not good news for the show's chances of being renewed for another season.

On the other hand, BOSTON LEGAL has gotten a renewal for another season. ABC is shaking up its schedule next year, so it may not be back on Tuesday, but it WILL be back.

Back from an excellent meeting -- except for the fact that I couldn't find my car for about half an hour (or more) afterwards. The meeting was in the skyscraper at the foot of the hill leading up to Universal Studios. The parking structure is in a separate building. So I parked - noted the Section - 2G - and went to my meeting. An hour later I got on the elevator, rode to the main level and transferred to the Parking Structure elevator and Pressed 2. So far, so good. I get out, find Section 2G. No car. I walked the area several times. No car. By now I'm thinking maybe my mind is playing tricks on me and it was 3G. So I go to area 3G. Altogether now - NO CAR! So I ask someone who looks like he works there. Is there another area 2G here? Nope. I walk around for another 15 minutes. Even get back on the elevator. Resulting in - one, two, three - NO CAR!!
So I ask someone else. This time a woman. And we all know that women are more logical. (Except me, perhaps.) This woman finally asks me the right question: "Do you work here?" When I tell her that I most certainly do not, she says, "Oh! Then you parked in the Star Area." The what??? I get back in the elevator - and, indeed, there's one button with a star. I press it, get out and discover VISITORS PARKING. I amble over to section 2G of VISITORS PARKING and (altogether now) FIND MY CAR!
Now may I just ask how you're supposed to know The Secret of the Star? (The title of my next screenplay.)
...Needless to say, I was exhausted by the time I got home.

One other quick note. Yesterday I got the Prep Schedule for my opus which starts shooting in a few weeks. As I've said before, I've always wanted to write a 1940's style movie with tap dancing! And the dream has come true. (This is by no means a musical - but it takes place in 1943 and has a big tap production number and lots of 40's music.)
So, looking at the schedule made me smile with delight. Each day begins with the following notation:
"Tap rehearsal (Location TBD)"

I certainly meant to add Franklin Pangborn, too.

But there are still excellent character actors today who work all the time. It's just that there is no studio system putting them in 10-15 movies a year so that their faces, if not their names, become a part of our movie vocabularies.

However, there are certainly TV actors that one sees pop up in guest star roles continuously from show to show, network to network. Someone like Kevin Chamberlin is a prime example.

Yes, DR MattH, there are some very good character actors out there now...Doris Roberts is one that comes to mind...Patrick Warburton is becoming quite a character actor..he never really was a leading man...except one low budget movie he made back in the 1980s...I am sure there are many others but as you said they don't get cast enough for them to become familiar to us all...and of course many of us don't really see as many current movies as we would like...so I suppose they might be there and I wouldn't even know it, now would I! There was a very short lived TV series during the 80s called something like GRAPEVINE, in which three characters (two brothers--one a pilot and the other a restaurateur--and a woman who was--I think--a travel agent) would talk about the sexual shennanigens of their network of friends.  I remember that it was sort of witty and clever.  But anyway, one episode guest-starred Patrick Warburton.  A very young and hunky Patrick Warburton.  A very young and hunky Patrick Warburton who did a scene in his jockey shorts.  Which was probably the primary reason I still remember this series.

I can't believe that anyone is here posting.  Right now, as I type, Trinity Broadcasting is airing a television special that totally debunks the theory of evolution.  And it does it scientifically! It has something to do with discovering the Inca Burial Stones which show, without a doubt, man interacting with, and even riding on, dinosaurs.  AND these stones are only two thousand years old, which proves that man and dinosaurs existed together, just prior to the time of Jesus.

Okay, now I will overlook the fact that Fred Flintstone proved that theory almost 50 years ago.  And I will overlook the fact that these Burial Stones are on display in that famous scientific museum located in Inca, Peru (a city that I have not visited).  However, I find it a little difficult to accept man and dinosaurs roaming the earth together 2,000 years ago, because that would basically rule out everything that occurred in the Old Testament after Genesis.

When I got back to the TV, I started up BURNT OFFERINGS again, and since I had about 35 minutes left and knew how it was going to end, I switched over to the commentary to hear Karen Black, Dan Curtis, and the screenwriter (whose name escapes me at the moment) talking about the making of the film. They obviously regard it much more highly than most everyone I know who ever saw it.

Next I put in THE TOWERING INFERNO. The new anamorphic version of it (and THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE) comes out next week, and since I hadn't seen this on the bigger TV, I wanted to see if there was any reason to update (especially since I don't watch this movie very often). I think it looks good enough to just keep what I've got, but I'll continue watching tomorrow to make certain. I only got about 15 minutes into the film if that far.

AMERICAN IDOL tonight - - - -

No one batted both of their songs out of the park tonight. And as far as I was concerned, Paris struck out with both of hers. I disliked the Prince song intensely. The other was better, but her breathing is still atrocious, and her voice nearly cracked near the end of her second song.

The person who came closest to having the best night for me was Taylor. Neither of the songs taxed his abilities much, but he showed two sides to his personality with them and did fine jobs with both.

I was very disappointed with Elliott's "On Broadway." It began too low for him. Once the key changed, he sang some of the higher notes sharp, rare for him (though he did some scat singing at moments that was very enjoyable). I think he must have been more nervous tonight than last week especially since he didn't get good reviews on his first song. "Home," his second song, was much better but still not a showstopper.

Katharine's "Against All Odds" was very poorly sung. Her second song, done while kneeling on the floor, was better but again didn't have much of a taxing vocal for her. I think she may be in trouble.

Chris may be, too. His first song was the best song of the night. The second song showed his voice to be exhausted and raw. He could get away with it being a "rocker," but his telephone line was the least busy of anyone's lines tonight. He could be in trouble, too.

HOUSE had a riveting episode. Omar Epps' character really crossed the line tonight, too, and I was kind of shocked there wasn't a bigger shock from others once they knew what he had done. The show concluded tomorrow night in the timeslot where BONES normally plays.

The amazing Anthony Anderson played Christopher Meloni's new partner tonight on LAW & ORDER: SVU. There was strife, of course, and I knew he was only guest starring. A new female partner is to join him at some point and into next season while Mariska Hargitay is off on maternity leave.

Re: tonight's american idol.

I was doing other things while watching. But I agree with DR MattH that nobody had two good songs.

I really liked Taylor's second song. I haven't cared for him much for a while. But I thought he really sang the song well.

I also liked Paris' Mary J. Blige song (song 2). I love that song and thought Paris stood her own.

I didn't really like katharine's song one. ANd while i thought song two was better, I did not get why she was squatting on the ground.

Didn't really hear chris' number one. But number two was boring.

Elliot didn't really excite me, and i feel like he and paris are probably the least popular ones right now.  But really at this point anyone could go.

I'm not even really sure who i want to leave. I know i don't want it to be katharine.

I always seem to be in the same room with The Fantasticks' Tom Jones on my birthday.  For two years in a row, anyway.  :)   Last year, I was at the show First Lady Suite on my birthday and regaled Mr. Jones with the silly fact that I was born the day before The Fantasticks opened so I knew that his show's 45th anniversary was coming up the next day.  Tonight, for the first time since last year on my birthday, I was a few feet from Mr. Jones, but he was swept into other conversations far more important.  But it was a weird coincidence to have seen him on my birthday two years in a row, and never at any other times in my life.

Although my birthday is over, birthday week continues until I see Dear friend Julie next Sunday (coincidentally, a very good friend of Julie's was sitting in front of me tonight, but alas, a fine lass, but not Julie).

And many thanks to Dakota, Cilla and Danise for the birthday wishes.

Another really cool thing for next season is that the Washington Center is doing another silent movie series.  It was very popular.  There's a giant pipe organ built into the theater and Dennis James will play the organ live during the showings.

Also, there is some movie that, for a long time, only about 20 minutes of it was thought to have existed (they didn't say what movie it was).  The rest of the movie was recently found and fixed up and they're going to have the premiere showing (two performances, actually) at the Washington Center AND (this is the cool part) the organ music is going to be recorded live as the soundtrack to a DVD release!  Pretty darned cool!

Actually, it was explained that the organ isn't going to be recorded by conventional means.  They rebuilt and restored the organ a couple of years ago and instead of having the pipes play they way they usually do (however that is), they have the keys and pedals hooked into a computer; then, the computer sends the signals to open the air valves to make the noise.  What they're going to do is have the computer create a player-piano-type file that will be used for the soundtrack, so that if Dennis James makes mistakes on either of the two performances, they can cut and paste sections from the other performance.  Very interesting!
