Well, you've read the notes, you are now in the know and with it and also with it and in the know, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they, of course, mis-read today's notes title as MOO AND RAY.

I watched two DVD's sent me by DRMBARNUM yesterday.

The first of the Mifune Samarai Trilogy...in color!  From 1955 - Musashi Myimoto.  I bought the other two films on Ebay - well I got a set of three on VHS for about $11 including shipping.  I want to see how the story ends!

LAKEER starring Mr John Abraham.  A VERY good film....a love triangle tied to a gangster film...with GREAT color and jazzy musical numbers...

Good morning, all! I had a lovely Sunday with family:
My Father, cousin Sue Ellen and I visited my home-bound 74 year-old Uncle Bob, my mother's brother, for a couple of hours yesterday.  I hadn't seen him since my brother's wedding 11 years ago.  His heart is quite bad, and my cousin and father kept remarking on the way back how poor he looked.  I was just happy to see him still alive.  This is the uncle who dated Phyllis McGuire a million years ago in high school or junior high.

Then father, cousin and I went to my mother's grave and redid the flowers.  After that, I went to buy a new cap, and spent the remainder of the afternoon and evening at my brother Tom's, listening to his wife deal with her mother's diabetes and watching my brother fighting the insects eating the timber on his home.

Tomorrow, my Father and I spend 4 hours in hospital as he undergoes some sort of scan.   I can't even think of the TOD right now because my time on the computer is limited.  Perhaps later.

RE: Rodzinski's questions last night: I have seen MONOLITH MONSTERS, but it was sooooo many years ago. Perhaps TCM will show it one of these days and I can catch it again. I seem to recall that as a kid I didn't find it all that interesting, but I do believe it is more of an adult thriller (not the type of adult thriller in Elmore's VCR, however).

And no, I had not heard about Naushad's death...he composed the music for some of Bollywood's biggest classic films!

TCB, knowing your interest in the Titanic, I wondered if you have seen this news piece.

Titanic's Last American Survivor Dies at 99

By ANDREW RYAN, AP

BOSTON (May 7) - Lillian Gertrud Asplund, the last American survivor of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, has died, a funeral home said Sunday. She was 99.

Asplund, who was just 5 years old, lost her father and three brothers - including a fraternal twin - when the "practically unsinkable" ship went down in the North Atlantic after hitting an iceberg.

She died Saturday at her home in Shrewsbury, said Ronald E. Johnson, vice president of the Nordgren Memorial Chapel in Worcester, Mass.

"She went to sleep peacefully," he said.

Asplund's mother, Selma, and another brother, Felix, who was 3, also survived the Titanic sinking in the early morning of April 15, 1912.

Asplund was the last Titanic survivor with actual memories of the sinking, but she shunned publicity and rarely spoke about the events.

At least two other survivors are living, but they were too young to have memories of the disaster. Barbara Joyce West Dainton of Truro, England, was 10 months old and Elizabeth Gladys "Millvina" Dean of Southampton, England, was 2 months old.

The Asplund family had boarded the ship in Southampton, England, as third-class passengers on their way back to Worcester from their ancestral homeland, Sweden, where they had spent several years.

Asplund's mother described the sinking in an interview with the Worcester Telegram & Gazette newspaper shortly after she and her two children arrived in the city.

Selma Asplund said the family went to the Titanic's upper deck after the ship struck the iceberg.

"I could see the icebergs for a great distance around ... It was cold and the little ones were cuddling close to one another and trying to keep from under the feet of the many excited people ... My little girl, Lillie, accompanied me, and my husband said 'Go ahead, we will get into one of the other boats.' He smiled as he said it."

Because they lost all of their possessions and money, the city of Worcester held a fundraiser and a benefit concert that together brought in about $2,000 for the surviving Asplunds.

Lillian Asplund never married and worked at secretarial jobs in the Worcester area most of her life. She retired early to care for her mother, who was described as having never gotten over the tragedy.

Selma Asplund died on the 52nd anniversary of the sinking in 1964 at age 91. Felix Asplund died on March 1, 1983, at age 73.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Johnson said.

We've got another cloudy and cool day here. It was very cold (for May) last night, and again isn't supposed to get out of the 60s today. I'm not sure it even got to the 60s yesterday.

Another good day to stay inside as much as possible. But things start to warm up tomorrow and should be back to 80 by Thursday.

For classic teams, it has to be the Marx Bros. for me. HORSE FEATHERS continues to be my favorite of their films (love Groucho in the classroom teaching about how blood flows through the body), and the mirror bit between Groucho and Harpo in DUCK SOUP is a worthy classic moment.

I even love all their antics in THE COCOANUTS though the romantic subplot in the film between Mary Eaton and Oscar Shaw could be deleted, and I wouldn't mind a bit.

Hello! Well I've had a weekend! Non delivery of new stove which was pushed back to Mother's Day.  Dentist appointments which were cancelled to accomodate arrival of new stove couldn't be rescheduled becasue they had already been given away.  The Vixter went to her cousins' for the afternoon while Vixdad & I had to attend a graduation dinner for a friend who decided to change professions and went back to school to become a teacher.  He is graduating Summa Cum Laude and (or is it Magna Cum Laude... he had a 4.0  so whichever...) and won an award for Outstanding Non Traditional Student (he's 42)

SO while at the dinner some 60 miles from our beloved Vixter we get a call from my SIL who says she took all the kids to the beauty parlor and the Vixter had an allergic to "something" and could she have a Benedryl?

Well when we got to the Vixter and hour and a half later her face was puffed up like it was when the yellow jacket stung her last fall... her right eye swollen almost competely closed and the bruise on her cheek from when she was hit by the golf club in gym on Thursday (I mentioned that, right?) had changed from a slight purplish shadow to a huge green, yellow and purple mark on her swollen right cheek...she looked like the loser of a prize fight.

I stuck a couple of more Benedryl in her, put a cold face cloth over her eye and we soldiered on as her cousin had been invited back for a sleepover and they were determined to have it.

So back to our house where the girls had a lovely time giggling and laughing all night then in the morning a race to get the Cousin back home in time for her soccer game and the Vixter & I to church in time for her choir singing and my sunday school teaching and then we raced home changed clothes and raced out to the local minor league baseball stadium to see the Long Island Ducks play the Camden Sharks.....the first time we were ever at the stadium and we had a great time.

Especially as the Ducks won 7 - 3 and we got to see a home run, a player steal 2nd AND 3rd, a couple of nifty double plays  and there were plenty of popup fouls to the stands to make everyone grab their gloves and hope to catch one.

Then back home where the Vixter did some homework  before we three went bicycle hunting for the Vixter

She and I had seen one she liked Friday night but didn't want to buy without Vixdad's ok... of course they were out of it  in all the stores by Sunday late afternoon when we got there so failure... the search will go on.

Then home for a hasty dinner and then to deliver her to her church youth group.  and THAT"S why I was E & T all weekend!

PS The Vixter's face is much better today

Favorite comedy team would be the Smothers Brothers.  Lots of great routines with bite; they did a really sick riff on "The Impossible Dream" which included such silly moments as "Lovely courageous Joan of Arc, through forty days and forty nights of rain"  and also the IIRC very controversial line "In fighting for what they believe in, some people have not only given up their lives, but even given up their time."

TARANTULA most definitely IS my favorite of the sci-fi bug pictures of the 1950s, and a DVD can't come fast enough for me. I'm guessing it'll get the full frame treatment here, however.

I've lived with the full frame videotape for so many years that I'm used to it looking that way, so I know I'll buy it regardless of the aspect ratio on the disc.

I adore the SMothers Brothers of the more modern comedy teams. I still have many of their albums on LP, and I will occasionally pull one of them out and listen to it. I was a big, big, fan during their heyday in the 1960s. I was a member of their fan club, the only such club I've ever belonged to.

Wow, Deb/Vixmom, you had quite the time. All we did was transfer some tapes to CD, have Chinese dinner out at our favorite spot (The Cottage on 16th Street and Irving Place), I went to the Bodies exhibit at South Street Seaport on Saturday and on Sunday we took a walk so we could be in the beautiful weather and then we had a Mapp and Lucia marathon watching all six episodes in Series Two. Calm compared to you.

Glad to hear the Vixter is on the mend. It must have been a shock to see her face like that.

The Bodies exhibit was OK but it was also a little wierd. I wasn't grossed out but every so often the thought that these are real bodies just jumped into my thoughts. I didn't know this but there was some controversy over where the bodies were obtained. Apparently all the specimens are Asian. There are disclaimers all over the place that the bodies were obtained legally and treated with the utmost respect and dignity but there were comments in the guestbooks saying things like "stop stealing bodies from China" and questions like "why are all these bodies Asian and where are the women"

Warning graphic description ahead**********************

There was a female specimen who was pregnant when she died and the body (bodies) was preserved with the fetus still in the womb. It was difficult to look at that particular exhibit. The entire room with fetuses in various stages of development was hard to take. The disclaimers were again all over saying that none of the specimens were obtained illegally nor were they aborted. The curators did give you a chance, if you didn't want to pass through that room, to leave through another exit. There was a big sign telling you to pause and think before going through the last room because of the nature of the exhibit and it pointed to a door which took you to the end. Quite a few people took that route out.

We had lunch at South Street Seaport afterwards and then home with a stop at the grocery store.

We had Tuna Glop for dinner last night only it became Chicken Glop. I used chicken instead of tuna and added frozen peas and carrots. It was just as good as TG. We even have some left over for lunch this week.

Actually, Excalibur is a fairly traditional version of the Arthurian myth...strongly influenced by Mallory, I believe.  I like the movie very much, except the Search for the Grail section gets a bit tedious.

I have theories as to why...with the exception of Camelot, the Musical...the Arthur myth has not been more successfully exploited by movies...It just does not seem to be a subject matter that the movies have gone to the well to all that many times.

I think partly it is because it is a "dying fall", which is why it is a great story to me...but tough to graft a Hollywood happy ending on for the studios.

But I think the biggest problem is that Arthur just always comes off looking like a complying cuckold...a very tough position for a protagonist  to overcome.  Also if you read the traditional legends, after his early adventures...sword in the stone and all that...Arthur's central position in the tales somewhat fades in the background once he becomes king.  He comes on strong at the finish, but he has not second act...which spells doom for so many scripts in Hollywood.

There are authors whose alternative versions of Arthur, departing from Mallory and Tennyson, and embracing the legends' far more interestng Celtic and pagan origins, devoid of all  that sanctimonious Chritstianity, have captured much more interesting portraits of Arthur --things like Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley or Firelord by Parke Godwin or The Great Captains and The Green Man by Henry Treece.

It's a subject I find fascinating...having about three bookshelves full of Arthurian related material.

She only had one tablet at a time on Saturday, but yesterday morning I gave her two and that's when the swelling really came down.  She is such an energetic kid (as you may recall) it takes a lot more than a couple of Benedryl, a swollen shut eye and a golf club to the noggin to slow her down!!

I was thinking about this when I went to the link you provided last Friday.  I wouild have been happier to think that they were all plexiglass replicas.... I have always said that when I died I was willing my body to science but this exhibit has caused me to have second thoughts... I mean how respectful and dignified is it to have half your skin removed and be posed playing basketball in the nude for people to gawk at?

That said... I admit I still have a curiosty to see the exhibit, although I know I won't.

True Pogue, I always found the story in CAMELOT unsatisfying, because you get introduced to Arthur early on, and your sympathies lie with him. Lancelot is more one-dimensional as a matter of course, so it is hard to feel a ton of sympathy for him, and by extension Guinevere. It is difficult to wean onself from the wish that the character you like more ends up with the girl.

And when one thinks further, it is a shame that romantic shenanigans play such a role in destroying the kingdom. But the greater point does resonate: that the kingdom by its nature wasn't going to last but a brief shining moment regardless.

I surmise.

Well, in CAMELOT at least, she didn't at first. Rather despised his cockiness and assuredness as a matter of fact. His nobility and purity of spirit in bringing the dead knight back to life helped her to see him in a different light. Both try to fight their feelings of attraction but eventually give in to them though knowing they're wrong and somewhat damning themselves in the process. (Ah, the head and the heart sometimes fight horrendous battles within some of us.) And since Arthur loves them both, he can understand their mutual attraction and resigns himself to it never losing his love for either of them.

I don't know. The story felt more adult and true to me that the "hero" didn't end up with the girl but didn't retreat into hatred and bitterness because of their weakness.

Wasn't Gueniverre a teenager when she and Arthur married? Haven't read T.H. White in decades, but she was very young, I think.

TOD - Marx Brothers, hands down. Lots of great scenes.

I also LOVE the old Carl Reiner/Mel Brooks 2000 YEAR OLD MAN, and some of the other bits from that album.

Martin and Lewis - I was in LOVE with Jerry Lewis when I was a little girl, through my exposure to those movies. I think maybe that's what makes me love Jim Carrey's work so much...

Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams.
Burns and Allen.
Lucy and Ethel.

Several years ago, I was involved in a concert fundraiser for a local big band and they did an evening of big band music, swing songs and other stuff...including the "Who's on First" skit.  My friend Chip and I got several published versions and compiled one quasi-complete version and performed it on that evening.  I had one little brain fart somewhere near the end, but it wasn't so bad that people would've noticed.  We were quite good, if I do say so myself. ;D

Hello, it's me!

Again.

Another Monday.

Watched "Dial M For Murder" and "Play It Again, Sam" on DVD last night.  Thoroughly enjoyed both.

"Desperate Housewives" -- FINALLY, the Alfre Woodard character becomes INTERESTING.

Finally, Bree does the RIGHT thing with Andrew!

I'd say, "Finally! Edie shows what a bitch she can be", but it's not news.

"Grey's Anatomy" -- interesting episode.  I kept wondering who that veterinarian reminded me of....last night, it came to me that he reminds me of Chris O'Donnell.  Then I saw O'Donnell's name in the credits.

:D

Hi, Gins! Yes, the arts orgs seem reluctant to do much to promote workshops, etc - tto much effort - and they don't HAVE to promote anything! Arts Commissions and other government-blessed orgs don't have a Bottom Line to worry about - there are plenty more $$$ where these came from - it's Tax Money - they don't have to get anything back. And if they offer a free workshop, who cares if anyone actually attends???

Generally, I offer the workshops at a reasonable cost, and the arts org donates grant money to ME to cover the cost of perhaps 6 or 8 "underprivileged" or non-profit attendees. I do all the promo: interviews, free ink in newspapers, newsletters, interviews on radio - working the timing out at east 6 months in advance to hit the week or two before the seminars. THEY get a successful workshop- with photos to prove it! - and I GET THE MONEY!! for my efforts.

Incentive works, every time!!! Ask me again why I'm a Libertarian...

I saw a clip this weekend on the Weather Channel that was totally bizarre--this guy video taped a storm from inside his parked car as it was being pelted with baseball size hail.  Not only did the hail stones shatter and break the windshield--the exterior was pockmarked with deep dents.  If the guy had been outside the car he would have been killed (or knocked senseless in the very least.)

Although I wasn't intending to have "the conversation" today, I just had it.  It was tortured, in a way, but necessary, and we'll see what comes out of it.  It was good that I had it, because it was important that I state everything as I see it.  It was heard, and I think understood, maybe for the first time.  I'm sure there will be a few more conversations.

DR Vixmom, is the Vixter feeling better? I hope so!  Crazy story.  So what was she allergic to?

She looked much better this morning and went off to school feeling fine although I did give her a couple of Bendryl to be sure that she made it through the day without the swelling coming back.   Also this morning she showed me a couple of red itchy patches on the back of her knees and she was wearing shorts  Satrday, so I suspect that some hairdressing goop got spilled onthw chair she sat in and she rubbed her knees and then rubbed her eye and got the whole thing started!  No calls from school  which should be letting out any minute so I think we're over the worse!

Allergies are such a pain.  The other day I purchased a Lindt chocolate bar with wafers.  After one bite I realized why I had never sampled this particular chocolate bar-the dreaded hazelnuts were in it.  I can’t believe I didn’t read the ingredients. ::)

So, I’m standing in the parking lot outside the market with a mouthful of chocolate hazelnut and a need to spit it out immediately.  ;D I couldn’t just spit chocolate on the ground, what if a dog came by and ate it.  At this point the trash can seemed miles away, nothing left to use by my hand. :-[

If I had been smart I would have returned to the market & purchased a soda to fizz my mouth clean, instead I just sucked on a hard piece of candy which helped.  Still I was a bit off the rest of the day, not a big deal really.

The more hazelnut creeps into foods & I accidentally eat it, I more I build up some sort of tolerance to it.

I forgot to post what I had intended to post when I logged on...

TOD - Most of my faves have been mentioned, so I'll add the Canadian comedy team of Wayne and Shuster. They appeared on Ed Sullivan dozens of times, but refused to move to the US. (Although they replaced Jack Benny with a show one summer in the early 60's.) Wayne and Shuster were legends in Canada. And they influenced many comedians who came after them. Lorne Michaels of SNL was Shuster's son-in-law, for example. If you want to look up more info on them...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_and_Shuster

Two factoids: Shuster was the cousin of Joe Shuster, the creator of Superman.
And they met at Harbord Collegiate, the wonderful Toronto high school I attended (way before my time, of course).

Wouldn't be surprised if she got an Emmy nomination for guest actress. Very low key and fascinating acting by Whoopi, the antithesis of her character in GHOST.

News Flash For Buffet Lovers
Quote
DES MOINES, Iowa - Wendy Dershem may think twice before leaving that egg roll on her plate at her next Chinese buffet. The Des Moines woman, her boyfriend and her two children were kicked out of a restaurant last week after management accused her of leaving too much food on her plate.

"They told us we are not welcome there anymore," said Dershem, a repeat customer at the Dragon House buffet. "We waste too much food. But the buffet is all you can eat. And you know kids. They won't always eat everything, and they want something else."

Dershem said she paid her $5.95 fee on Saturday but was abruptly told to leave after eating one plate of food.

Employees said they had been watching her family on previous trips to the restaurant and were fed up with her habits.

"They just take one bite and throw it away," said cashier Lin Huyen. "They take four egg rolls and crab rangoon, take one bite of egg roll and throw the whole plate. That is wasting food."

Dershem said she was shocked by the scolding and complained to management when she paid her check. "It was embarrassing. ... If it's a one-stop buffet, post it," she said.

Dragon House manager Kent Cao said his restaurant offers an all you can eat buffet, not all you can waste. Dershem's family took food, didn't finish it and then piled on the same food again, he said.

"She’s done that too many times," Cao said. "We would welcome her back if she has respect and knows what she wants."

Bob Oberbillig, an adjunct professor at the Drake Legal Clinic, says the patron would have no legal case against exclusion from a business unless there are other factors such as racial discrimination or mental health issues.

"An establishment can exclude people if they smoke or waste food," he said. "It's still a private business."

We come from a land down under...

SYDNEY, Australia - Prostitutes, strippers and lap dancers can claim tax deductions for adult toys and lingerie, officials said Friday, as the Australian Taxation Office issued a list of deductible items for the sex industry.

Condoms, lubricants, gels and oils are among a myriad of other items that these workers can claim against tax, according to a fact sheet issued on the office's Web site.

While they cannot claim deductions for fitness classes that keep them in shape, the tax office ruled they can claim the cost of dance lessons.

"You can claim the cost of replacing or repairing things like equipment, adult novelties and other apparatus used in your work," the office advises, under a section titled "tools of trade."

"This is just another one of our occupational lists that we put together to help people," a taxation office spokeswoman said on customary condition of anonymity

Fans of the early 1960s TV show "Checkmate" might be interested to know about a new John(ny) Williams (http://www.screenarchives.com/fsm/detailCD.cfm?ID=363) recording that has been announced today by Film Score Monthly.

In addition to "Checkmate", another Williams album called "Rhythm in Motion" has been added to fill out the CD.  This one has a bunch of well-known show tunes (pre-Sondheim) arranged by Williams and then recorded in stereo like a musical version of "Lost in Space"....it's far out and may be just the ginchiest instrumental album you'll have heard in a long while!

Both albums were issued in the early 60s by Columbia Records.  FSM has accessed the Columbia LP stereo masters and presents both albums in pristine sound.

In addition, in T. H. White's Once and Future King, Lancelot is introduced as ugly and apelike.  He is the central character in the third book of the series, The Ill-Made Knight, which certainly places him with greater importance and dimention than the musicalization made of him.

I haven't had a chance to give more than a cursory glance to the website dedicated to White, "England Have My Bones." (http://www2.netdoor.com/~moulder/thwhite/)

For those who may have been following the story of the two Australian (Ta smanian) Gold miners trapped for fifteen days a milebeneath the ground, they were finally rescued and WALKED our from the mine an hour ago.

But there is a sad footnote:

SYDNEY, Australia - Richard Carleton, an award-winning journalist whose career in Australian television spanned 40 years, died on Sunday, minutes after asking a question at a news conference. He was 62.

Carleton, a reporter for the Nine Network's flagship program "60 Minutes," suffered a suspected heart attack moments after grilling the manager of a gold mine about its safety record. Two Australian miners have been trapped underground at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine for 13 days and Carleton was one of a phalanx of reporters in town covering the rescue operation.

What an ironic twist to the story. :-\

The funeral of the miner killed in the quake will be held today - the rescued miners will be attending.

Richard Carlton was indeed one of the best known, and at times controversial, journalists in OZ. It's a pity he will be remembered for his last question - inappropriate and the worst aspect of "Sixty Minutes" style TV journalism.

She was 99.

Ben, yes, thank you, I did see the story in this morning's newspaper.   I never had the chance to meet Ms. Asplund.  I believe she was going to be at the reception in Boston that was cancelled when the large hull piece broke free and sank again back in 1996.  I only had the chance to meet two of the survivors of the Titanic.  Hard to believe that we are still discussing the Titanic after 94 years.  There was a period in the the Thirties and the Forties where the ship and the sinking were all but forgotten.

We had lunch at South Street Seaport afterwards and then home with a stop at the grocery store.

Glad to hear that you didn't go out for ribs, Ben.

I know!  What is the point of calling it "live" when just about every on-line news source (who deems it worthy of being reported on) will report on it the moment it's actually over and not give the entire West Coast the chance of any surprise??

Didn't have time for THE SOPRANOS tonight, but I did get to last Thursday's THE OFFICE, a painfully funny outing where Michael discovers there's a complaint file and insists on airing the office's dirty laundry of complaints against each worker by their co-workers. We got lots of interesting character backstory with these complaints, some very funny and some truly pathetic. And, something climactic happening with Jim and Pam. Drama on a comedy show!

Back from the editing room.  I was determined to be out by eight-thirty and I was.  Hoo and ray.  Matt and I did a commentary track - we had a great time and it just flew by - lots of anecdotes and funny stuff, plus some nice informational stuff, too.  I'll be picking up standard and anamorphic DVDs tomorrow afternoon, which I'll have to proof, but that should be it, hopefully.

I must now sit on my couch like so much fish.  Had part two of "the conversation" this evening via cell phone, and I once again listened to what was being said and then spoke my piece very nicely but strongly.  We'll have an in person conversation tomorrow night, and that will pretty much decide the ultimate path that's being taken.  Right now, there's an attempt to divide two of the issues into separate parts, one to deal with now (the biggie) and one to deal with way down the line - but, for me, it's all part and parcel and both have to be resolved before I'll decide which road to go down.

Well, I didn't watch much of David Blaine, at all.  I saw about the last two minutes of him holding his breath because when I got home, I started watching "How I Met Your Mother" (I got home later than I thought, thinking that I didn't have anything to watch...it just totally went out of my head!) and "Two and a Half Men," then it totally hit me that I was missing "The Apprentice!"  So, I instantly started taping "2&1/2M" and "Old Christine" and watched both "The Apprentice" and "Medium."  Since I knew how David Blaine turned out, I didn't care to watch the filler...and I came across the results because of non-HHW Internet sites anyway, so the spoilers didn't ruin it for me.
