Title: OLD MAN RIVER
Post by: bk on May 09, 2006, 12:14:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have rolled along and so have you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently rolling along and trying to find old man river so the twain can meet.  However, the twain is at the station, so that's always a problem.

Boating stories?  I've only been on few boats and all experiences have been (thankfully) fairly uneventful.  And that is the end of any of my boating stories. :)

Trains and Boats and planes!

As a young teenager I used to spend many summer days on my Uncle's launch - fishing, and listening to Top 40 songs.

I did travel to England from OZ by ship in 1973 - via the Panama Canal.

I also remember far from successful attempts at rowing a boat. I've never been sailing or in a canoe or kayak.

That would've been cool!  My former supervisor and her husband used to take a vacation every May (for practically the entire month).  Usually, they would go to Hawaii, but once in a while, they would take a cruise.  One time, they flew down to Florida (I think), got on the ship, cruised down south, went through the Panama Canal and ended up in California, then they flew back to Seattle.  She did mention that it wasn't unusual at the end of each cruise to hear that at least one person had died!  Usually, older people falling off of the walkways...but still!

Good morning to all!

Hi S. Woody White, what are you doing up this early?

Just wanted to say Thank you to everyone for making my Birthday a special one.

My boss brought in all sorts of sweet rolls for my Birthday and a Apple turnover (Yum!  My favorite) for me.

I'm glad that David Blaine is alright.  Above all the hype, etc, he still is a human and I wouldn't want to watch anyone die for my "entertainment'.

Gotta run!

TOD:

Ever hear of a Folbot? (http://www.folbot.com/)

They are a kind of kayak, but can be taken apart and put back together.  My Dad decided it would be fun to have one to take with us on our camping trips.  The frame, which had to be put together in two parts first, was made of wood and aluminum piping.  After the fore and aft halves were assembled, they were inserted and then joined inside the hull, which was made of a rubberized fabric.  Ours was a steely blue color, with a sunshine yellow top.

The first time we put it together was in the livingroom of our home in Burbank, CA.  Since the Folbot was a two-person rig, it stretched from the far end of the livingroom on into the dining room.  Of course, since it was new everything was stiff, and putting it together was a bitch.  Not to mention how stiff my Dad felt the next morning.  After a few days, Mom complained that it was making housekeeping too difficult, so we took it apart again.  At least we knew what we'd be doing on our next camping trip.

Back then, the fifth member of my family was our dog, Shortz, who had quite the personality.  Shortz was a black and tan miniature Daschund, so named by my sister because everyone else in the family (save my mother) was tall.  I didn't care for the name, myself, and would often call him Hugo or Henrick or Herbert, anything that started with an H, and he fully understood that I was referring to him.

Well, it didn't take long for Henrick to decide that he, too, wanted to get in the Folbot when we were out on a lake paddling around.  At first, he was content just to put his front paws on the railing around the passenger section, and watch the world go by.  After a while, however, he decided it would be fun to get up on the yellow top of the hull.  It was strong enough to hold him.  And it would be fun to look down at the water.

And, oops, he fell in!

So of course we had to fish him out of the water, and dry him off.  And after he was dried off, he would watch the world go by...

And presently he would climb up on the top of the hull again...

He had a marvelous time riding in that boat, and swimming around it.  We learned very quickly to take several towels with us whenever he would go riding.

I'm up this early because I've got an early shift at the store today.

The week to come should be interesting.  Yesterday, four new cashiers started their training, in preparation for the summer.  Being a resort town, Rehoboth Beach gets very busy during those months, and a lot of the people who come into town don't eat all their meals in restaurants.  There will be lots of barbecues and parties, so we'll be selling a lot of food.

So, much of my shift yesterday was spent with Lauren, showing her how I do what I do, explaining as I went.  She's pretty sharp, caught on quickly, and listened well.  After our break, she spent some time watching a video on how to bag properly, and then came back and worked as my bagger.

And I needed one!  We had six registers running, and there was rarely a break between customers.  Quite often we had a line, just a short one but a line all the same.  I've a hunch it's going to be a very busy summer.

Whether or not I'll be training someone else today, I don't know.  I do know we've been short-staffed, what with some of our old hands transferring to the new store a half-hour south of here.  Three of the cashiers who are still with us have moved to other departments, and one is out on medical leave (after having both hips replaced, he's become addicted to the procedure and had the same done to one of his shoulders).  That's why I've been putting in close to full-time hours on this "part-time" job.

It's strange, realizing that I'm now one of the old-timers.  Good, but still strange.

We (der Brucer and I) are almost totally out of dog food.

I want to replace our fondue pot, since Fletcher broke our old one.

And I'm out of soda, but we're having a sale on Coke products, ten two-liter bottles for seven bucks, not a bad price.

That's the other reason why I work, aside from enjoying my job.  Have to earn the money to pay for this $..+.

I worked on a Showboat in 1976. We were docked and didn't travel at all but we were still on the boat. It was great fun and one of the highlights of my performing career.

I like boats but I have not taken any real boat trips. In spite of the cheesy aura usually surrounding cruises, I would love to take a cruise. I would like to leave from NYC on a ship such as the new Queen Mary and take a long, leisurely trip to Southhampton, get off, spend some time in dear old England and then return home on the same ship.

Tuesday morning greetings!  Yes, DR Elmore did pass up salsa and margaritas, but he and DH Richard and I have a breakfast date for tomorrow morning at the coffee shop near our house.

TOD - We live just north of Cincinnati, Ohio, which is on the Ohio River.  Every few years, since 1992, there has been a riverboat festival called

Tall Stacks (http://www.tallstacks.com)

during which riverboats, both historic and new, rally on Cincinnati's riverfront.  We've gone to the fest every year, sometimes taking a cruise on one of the boats, sometimes just enjoying looking at them from the shore.  In 2003, DH Richard and I went with my mom and my aunt and rode on the Creole Queen (http://www.neworleanspaddlewheels.com/about_creolequeen.html) in the Parade of Boats that was broadcast on WLWT-TV.  We were standing on the bow as we came into port, called DS Rob (who had just gotten home from school), and he saw us waving!

This year's Tall Stacks will take place during the week that many of us will be in NYC.

My dad bought his first boat when I was 10, a fiberglass 15 foot outboard... he worked in town and used to be home by 4:30  and it was only 15 minutes to the boatslip so almost every evening inthe summer he and I would go out fishing or just for a ride... it was beautiful watching the sun set over the Robert Moses Bridge across the Great South Bay.

The whole family (my two younger brothers, Mom , Dad & I) would often go out on a Saturday or Sunday with a cooler and a hibachi and go out to the State Channel where there were small barrier beaches.  We'd pull the boat up on the sand and  have a picnic and have the whole beach to ourselves.  Dad, the boys and I would go clamming with our feet and our parents (none of we kids could abide actually eating clams) would pop them open and eat them fresh from the sea (which I always found  a bit gruesome)

I once found a scallop... did you know they have blue eyes?  Hundreds of 'em!

We would also take trips over to Fire Island and dockl the boat at one or another of the little towns.... there is a Sunken Forest on Fire Island  a little forest below sea level between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great South Bay http://www.nps.gov/fiis/FireIslandTrek.htm

Later when we were teenagers, and then adults my parents bought a larger boat they would go to the far eastern end of Fire Island a spot called Watch Hill, a couple of miles east of Cherry Grove and The Pines and stay for a weekend or sometime as a week or more, several of their boating friends would go and dock up at the same time and they would have a little floating community there.

My friends and I  would take the Ferry over and spend the day  often wandering westward to Davis Park, Cherry Grove or the Pines or soemtimes taking the water taxi as far west as Kismet where they had two restaurants The Kismet Inn and The Kismet Out

A lot of my parents' boating friends passed away or moved away and after a while they decided it was too much work and too much money and they sold their last boat when the Vixter was about 2.  She has only ever been out on on large fishing boat when the Captree Boat Basin Annual Fair Weekend is on every falll and we go for a free ride.

We'd better have photographs of you in said cap and gown, TPunk.

My favorite boating experience was getting to cruise to Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, and Acapulco, first class, for free, and then getting to shoot an episode of The Partridge Family on the way back.  Now THAT'S a job!  The food was incredible, we were treated like royalty, and it was all very grand.

I also used to go with my ex-wife's family to Catalina twice a year, and I always took a speedboat out and cruised, which I liked very much.  Worst boating experience was when I went out with someone and we fished for sand dabs, and caught quite a few.  Unfortunately, the guy I was with cleaned the fish on the boat and I got so nauseous I thought I was going to die.

As a child, I used to do the motorboats at MacArthur Park (of the song).

Good morning!

Gray skies here, and they're not supposed to clear up (apologies to Strouse and Adams) today. A little armer today than yesterday (high in low 70s), but it's been abnormally chilly at night, and I just can't seem to regulate correctly how much cover to put on the bed to get a warm night's sleep. I've never been on a cruise, but I've always thought it would be a fun venture. However, I would only want to do it with a bunch of friends, and all of my friends have been on cruises before and have no desire to repeat the experience. (Maybe that should tell me something!)

My late uncle was a creature of habit. He loved to travel to favorite places and do the same things he had enjoyed there before. Because he had no children, my brother and I were his children, and he took us many, many places. My first ten trips to NYC were with my aunt and uncle, and on EVERY one of them, we would take the boat trip around the island. Very enjoyable the first time around, and I didn't even mind the second time, but after the fourth or fifth time, it got OLD (the trip basically kills an entire morning or afternoon). I was glad when I became old enough for them to trust me out of their sight in NYC so I didn't have to go on that boat trip.

On my first trip to New Orleans, we took one of the paddleboats up the Mississippi. It was lots of fun, and the boat I was on served the BEST hurricanes I've ever had. Not Pat O'Brien's or any other place celebrated for their hurricanes could touch the one (or three!) on that paddleboat.

I took a paddleboat ride near Louisville when I was a kid. On the Ohio River.

Over at "Indiana Beach" aka Schafer Lake, we rode around on a pontoon boat. Mostly about that day, I remember going to eat at Burger Chef and one of the counter girls refusing to believe I was not Mikey from the LIFE cereals commercials. When my mom assured her I was not Mikey, I'll never forget the girl asking, "But is his NAME Mikey?"

May I add my congratulations to the newly edu-ma-kated DR TPUNK.  And my outrage at Bosco's exclusion from the Park!

Also my congratulations to our local DOT - SR 267 now funnels four lanes down to two....which includes SIX lanes of Interstate 70 which exits onto the road necessitating three stop lights within 70 feet of each other.

AND for choosing this exact time to CLOSE old SR 267 which is one mile WEST of this road, runs parallel, and could carry MUCH of the traffic...were it not CLOSED CLOSED CLOSED CLOSED.

You truly cannot get there from here.  It took me 45 minutes to travel 1/4 mile.  So much for conserving gasoline.

Projected completion date:  November, 2006.

I have quite a few boating stories, as I was the (as they called it) "Featured Artist" on board a semi-popular dining cruise line here in Portland for almost 9 years, until they decided that they needed to match their mediocre food with equally mediocre entertainment, at which point I lovingly bid them adieu.  :)

Anyway, on one particular cruise, the captain, who claimed he had the patent on the hacky sack (I kid you not), ran us aground on a sandbar.  It was quite a violent little crash--all of the hanging glasses at the bar flew off and burst into a million little pieces (this was years before anyone had heard of James Frey), a chest of drawers fell over on a cruise manager and broke his arm, and I flew off the piano bench backwards.  There was much screaming and commotion.  Not wasting a moment, I picked myself up, dusted myself off, sat back down at the piano and began playing "The Morning After."  Personally I found it hilarious.  It was a major news event in Portland, and I was IV'd repeatedly, since most of the reporters knew I was married to Betsy, who was still doing news in those days.  I got royally reamed (hmmm....) by the owners of the cruiseline for deigning to speak to the reporters, even though I said that it was a Coast Guard buoy placing error (which later turned out to be entirely correct).  This was the first of many clues that this particular cruise line was managed by absolute idiots.  Here they had someone who knew all of the reporters making this the lead story on all the evening newscasts, and instead of using that to their advantage to get their side of the story out, freaked out and did a "Bush" and clamped down on all commenting.

Some other time I'll regale you with the story of the stowaway in the hold with the knife (shades of Clue)--and this was after the 9/11 protocols had been implemented to "beef up" security.  Oy.

Of course, I served on two aircraft carriers -- USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) from 1984-87.  We had two Western Pacific "cruises" (called WestPacs, in Navy lingo).  One took me into the Bering Straits, then into the Sea of Japan with a brief stop in Osaka, Japan.  Next was Hong Kong.  From there we went to the Philippines for several days, and then onward to Singapore for another few days.  Afterwards we entered the Indian Ocean.  We had a couple of days in Mombasa, Kenya, and then spent a week or so off the coast of Somalia in December 1986 (that was the time when Somalia was getting international military assistance and supply drops, etc.).  We entered the Persian Gulf two days after Christmas that year and stayed there 97 days without setting foot on land.  Our first "landing" after that was Singapore (yes, again) and then on to Perth, Australia.  Then it was on to Honolulu and, finally, back into port in Alameda CA.  That was typical for that time of unrest in the Persian Gulf.  That was my second cruise.

On USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) , Oct. 1992-Dec. 1993, our WestPac was a variation of that sans the Bering Straits/Sea of Japan diversion.  We were also not going to the Philippines any longer.  We did hit Singapore and Hong Kong.  During our Persian Gulf time (roughly 65 days), we made a port visit to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates which lasted about 7 days.  Of note during this time was that Saddam Hussein had violated the no-fly zone several times and the U.S. was, along with allied military forces, launching air strikes against military targets in Iraq.  My ship was the "launching pad", as it turned out, and we hosted a horde of international media on a daily basis for about two weeks.  My life, as assistant Public Affairs Officer and the ship's Chief Journalist/Broadcaster, was dedicated to meeting the logistical needs of those media reps while maintaining daily operations of ship's TV and newspaper.  Somehow it all worked out...it was euphoric and exhausting and one of the more interesting times of my life.  I lived on roughly 4 hours of sleep per day during those two weeks.

While I was serving on USS Carl Vinson, I took some time off and visited my parents back in South Carolina.  We went to their lake house and, for the first time in my adult life (actually, the first time since I was about 7 years old), I went out on a boat with my parents to fish.

I got sea sick!

During the late 60s and early 70s my parents had a boat that we took to the lake often...my family was big into skiing. My dad sold the boat to finance my sisters wedding in 1971. However, my sister's marriage was to a river guide and we made many trips down the Rogue River throughout the 1970s.

Re:  Last night's "Medium"

SPOILER POTENTIAL

I watched about half an hour and then started nodding off.  I was pooped/whipped/tired.  I was determined to outlast the show, however, but I admit I missed parts as I couldn't keep myself from nodding off.

Still....I got the gist of it.  And as for the last scene, as MattH commented last night, it seems they tried to be a little more clever than they needed to be...although, I think it does set up Grammer for future appearances as "death."

Good afternoon, all!  I got my father to the hospital by 8 am, and the technician told me to retrieve him from his PET scan in 3 hours.  I went to the hospital cafeteria, had a bit of breakfast, edited some of the new Act One libretto for BABES IN TOYLAND, read a bit of THE DAVINCI CODE (I've finished the Prada-wearing Devil), and my father joined me around 10:45.  He seems okay, so I took him out for a cheeseburger since the doctors are protein-ing him up for the chemo.

Now, I'm enjoying my  liesure at the public library.  Tonight, I have dinner with friends, tomorrow morning breakfast with DR Ginny.  The social whirl in Ohio is exhausting.  This town is so deplorable!

I never cruise, only chase.

Alas, the times I have been on a boat have been damned few and so I have no real interesting boating stories.  Those few times, I've been on a boat, I've always enjoyed it and it looks like a leisurely lifestyle...but one I've never actively pursued.

Though with three lakes where I live and this lovely Kentucky spring, I keep thinking,  "Maybe I should get a boat."  Then I think: "Why?  You don't fish; you don't water ski; if you want to swim, you'd prefer a chlorinated pool...and think of the expense and up-keep, nah..."

We used to take a ferry across the river from Northern Kentucky to Coney Island in Cincinnati and that was always fun.  We've actually got a car ferry down on the Kentucky River.  And one of my High School reunions was spent on a paddle wheeler, going up the Ohio River for about three hours.

I've always want to take one of those steam boat cruises along the Ohio or Mississippi...probably in the fall.  I'm thinking it would be a lovely, leisurely way to spend the week and see the fall colours and the country.  But when I mention to other friends, no one else seems intrigued.  Maybe they regard as a sure sign of impending geezer-dom.

I enjoy the Circle Line around Manhattan when there's an interesting person doing the guiding announcements.  Also, the Jungle Cruise at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World is quite enjoyable, despite being attacked by an animatronic alligator.

And of course, I do enjoy the ferry across to Jersey from the pier on the West Side.  (That was for Tomovoz.)

If anyone wants an excuse not to celebrate Mother's Day, read, "Oh, mothers!"--  the cover article in the SCIENCE section of today's NY Times.

TOD - I was going to say I have no particular boat adventures to relate, but then I read DR Pulliam's post and remembered I'd been out on the aircraft carrier CONSTELLATION to do research for a screenplay. It was quite the experience. Nothing earth-shattering -- just really, really interesting. One thing that struck me was how incredibly young most of the sailors were.

I did enjoy the show. Although it was pretty creepy having alison thinking she would die.  And i'm not quite sure why she didn't die.  I mean why do some of her dreams come true, but this did not.

I also think the demise of kelsey's character (not death) happened a bit too fast and didn't really make too much sense.

If the resolution is not that important, you can just hit ALT + Print Scrn on the web page and then Paste it into the Word doc.  If you want to be able to clearly read the what's on the webpage, you might have to paste it into Paint and then crop off some of the white space before you paste into the Word doc.

I wonder if Luba Kadison's apartment was rent controlled.
I once visited Dorothy Frooks, an elderly lady lawyer, at Morgans, the too too trendy hotel on Madison Ave. (I was doing research for a screenplay. Miss Frooks had been hired by Harry K. Thaw - yes THE HKT - to defend a young woman accused of murder. Thaw fell for Miss Frooks in the midst of all this. A fascinating story. Frooks is featured as one of the "witnesses" in the movie REDS.)
ANYWAY, Miss Frooks had lived for many years in what had become Morgans. When they were renovating the building to create the chrome-on-chrome hotel, she refused to leave her digs, so her rent could not be raised.
So - when you entered her apartment, you'd go from the terribly trendy hallway and step back 50 years by crossing her threshold. Very unsettling and interesting.
If you want to read a little about Dorothy Frooks, BTW, the Wikipedia entry is TOTALLY wrong. You can find a bit at
http://library.law.columbia.edu/rise_of_women/practice/dorothy_frooks.html

By the end of Thursday, I hope to be close to finishing the first act.  Then I'll try to barrel through act two next Tuesday and Thursday, which will leave us a week to hone stuff as much as possible and to start having run-throughs.  Hopefully, I can at least get everything to flow properly.  The kids are all picking everything up very fast.

Got many things watched and cleared off the DVR. First up was last night's OLD CHRISTINE. I enjoyed the show, and the brother character is growing on me. He was very funny last night. Wanda Sykes fits in this show as a supporting player much better than when she was the lead of her own series. Not a skilled enough comic actress to carry the burden of a series, but to pop in, deliver a few jokes, and exit, she's perfect.

DR MATTH - that is one of my favorite Lana Turner performances (Pauline Kael notwithstanding)....  And of course she looks fantastic....

There is the story (might be publicity of course) that once Lana was made up as the OLDER Holly, that all the mirrors be covered so that she wouldn't catch sight of herself.

Constance Bennett was the scary looking one, though.  And dead between filming and release.  She had gone to Switzerland for a long put off face lift....she was afraid of the surgery....but went through with it once she was cast in MADAME X...  Vanity.....

I guess I should have added Mississippi Cruise, Circle line NY cruise, Crossing the English channel, cruise on Lake Lucern , Cruises on whatever the lake is in Queenstown Hobbitland, a cruise up the Rhine and cruises on the Moldau, and on the Thames.

The crews I left to Jose.

And the Mark Twain at Disneyland!!

Well, I'll be darned...that is where I had lunch with Rodzinski! Did you stop and buy any $5 Bollywood DVDs?

Constance Bennett was the scary looking one, though.  And dead between filming and release.  She had gone to Switzerland for a long put off face lift....she was afraid of the surgery....but went through with it once she was cast in MADAME X...  Vanity.....

Thanks for this info. I didn't know it. And I thought Constance looked marvelous in the early scenes. Her old age make-up was frightful at the end. Keir's sparkling blue eyes were remarkable for me today.

I've checked out both letterboxed and anamorphic DVDs - the letterboxed is the sharper, I'm afraid - but I don't know if that's just the nature of the DVD being transfered from a digi-beta to a DVD-R or what.  I'm going to ask the authoring guy his opinion from just looking at the digi-betas of each.

I think I'll try jogging - it's always an ordeal starting, I must say.  Then I'll be supping later.  Had another telephonic conversation where many interesting things were said, and, depending on my state of mind, things might be resolved and in a fairly positive way - but that would require me just putting aside everything that's gone down this past week.  We shall see.

Ok, call me crazy, but in addition to the crazy stuff happening at work, for the past 3-4 weeks I have had this overwhelming feeling that I shouldn't go to San Francisco on this trip.  It isn't usual for me to get this feeling and I had a huge rush of relief when I cancelled the trip.  Maybe it's nothing, but I feel a lot better.

I need to go to my old house, put on the screen windows and air it out for awhile.   The woman who looked at it 4 times and took in a contractor to get an estimate to redo the kitchen hadn't bothered getting her financing lined up and hadn't put her house on the market. The bank turned her down for a bridge loan so she wasted a lot of people's time.

There is another prospective buyer who is very interested and should know about her financing this week. So I'm going to go air out the house and see if I need to do a little sprucing up.

CP some of the stream cruises look very nice.  I would like to try a short cruise on one.

There are a number of river cruises I find tempting, here and abroad.  If we have to go to Bucharest again, a cruise on the Danube or the Black Sea from Bucharest might be nice.

Title: Re:OLD MAN RIVER
Post by: Jane on May 09, 2006, 07:19:55 PM
Summers I went to camp and enjoyed kayaking and canoeing.  A few summers ago our neighbor took us kayaking with him, once down a beautiful river on a bird sanctuary (have no idea where I was) and twice on the lake near our house.  We used his double person kayak so Keith could do the work when I was tired.  ;D

The problem with boats is they usually make me sick, cruises are okay for the most part.  The cruise we took from Anchorage to Vancouver 11 years ago was fantastic & the reason we are returning this summer with friends.  I don’t know if this trip will be as great since the ship doesn’t go as far up into Alaska, considering its Alaska it can’t be bad. :)

My best experience on a boat, in spite of the fact I was incredibly sea sick, was in Maui on a dolphin excursion.  It was absolutely incredible-hundreds of Spinning Dolphins.  Dolphins love to play in the wake of boats so if you want to have a nice long time with the dolphins the boat must spin continually to keep them there.  So round and round we went, at full speed,  :Pwhile up and around the dolphins went.  :D

Did any LOST fan spot in their newspaper today an ad from The Hanso Foundation?  It's a very realistic looking ad, in the front news section, no less.  Basically, it decries a newly published novel called BAD TWIN (the manuscript that Sawyer had been reading) which conntains "misinformation" about the foundation.  The ad says that the truth about Th Hanso Foundation can be found at (of course) www.TheHansoFoundation.org .

I'm sure that this (along with the commercial on last week's episode) is all part of the contest DR Jennifer mentioned a week or so ago.  I don't think I like the show being promoted in this way.  The "reality" of the show seems cheapened when it's called attention to this way.

IDOL opinions - - - -

Well, my favorite Elliott pulled off two controlled, classy, passionate, and confident vocals. Definitely my favorite two songs of the night.

I thought Taylor had a very good night as well. I'd rank him second among the vocalists. He had fun with "Jailhouse Rock" and did a very soulful "In the Ghetto." His best overall night for quite a while, I thought.

Chris had an up and down night, but it was mostly fine. "Suspicious Minds" was mellow; "A Little More Conversation" was pretty good. The arrangement might have shifted the key upward a little earlier to give him more thrust into the song. The lower parts were rather bland while he did get in all the words and notes.

Sad to say, Katharine had a disastrous evening in my estimation. She not only forgot some words on her medley of "Hound Dog, "Don't Be Cruel" but when she got back the words, she was not on pitch and it ended badly. My favorite Elvis song "Can't Help Falling in Love With You" was just massacred to my ears. She took this sweet, simple ballad and embellished it to irritating and ineffectual degree. Again, by the end, her breathing was off, she lost her pitch, and lost the end of the song completely.

Everyone's lines were busy tonight, but I managed to get through at certain points to everyone (Taylor the least), so this may be close. Taylor alone is the only remaining vocalist who's never been in the bottom group. I think he'll stay that way tomorrow night, too.

For me, Elliott did more than enough to warrant a place in the final three, but I have a feeling that he'll go and Katharine will get to stay.

I guess it's not over yet on the West Coast, so i will leave some space.

.

I think katharine will definitely be in the bottom 2. ANd i actually think that the judges praise will mean elliot will not go.

I didn't really get to watch it as well as usual, because i was with a big group of people, and my little niece. So it was hard to concentrate.

But I think that what the judges say will make a big difference. It wouldn't surprise me if Elliot was not even in the bottom 2. All the judges really went to bat for him.

Boats?  For being around so much water, I've sadly little experience on 'em.  Just a few ferries around Puget Sound and up to Victoria, B.C.

Well, I have had a lot of experience with cruising, and some of it did involve ferries.  In addition, I have taken about eight or nine major cruises in the last twenty years.  I love cruise ships.  It is my chance to get a taste of how the elite are pampered.  The cruise around the tip of South America was incredible (how many people can say they have been to the Falkland Islands?), the Bahamas cruise in the  middle of a hurricane was frightening; but for me, cruising the Caribbean is still the absolute best.

Next year I am hoping to either go back through the Panama Canal, or do a round trip cruise from LA to Hawaii.

I have been on a boat a few times...

One of the more interesting watercraft experiences was when some friends and I went canoeing at Cormarant Lake in Minnesota and in the wilderness area we got to see Bald Eagles nesting. What a sight! One swooped down and grabbed a fish from in the water near us.

I have been on a ferry up in Vancouver when I was visiting rellies in Vancouver and Seattle. While we were waiting for the ferry to leave i was watching this cat on a houseboat near by. He was having a hayday on the roof.

I have been on a boat a few other times since.

Well, this Friday (the day after tomorrow), Cheryl Bentyne of The Manhattan Transfer is performing in Seattle!  She's doing two shows and, on a whim, I bought a ticket to each performance!  She's doing a 7:00 p.m. show and a 10:00 p.m. show.  I bought one for each!  They were fairly cheap, so I thought, "Why Not?" (a Manhattan Transfer reference!).  So that's what I'll be doing on Friday. ;D
