Title: BUMP AND GRIND
Post by: bk on May 25, 2006, 12:07:18 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes did the bump and grind and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're also doing the bump and grind, and it's not that pretty a sight, frankly.

I got kicked off the site and had one devil of a time trying to get back on.

Anyway, I am delighted to hear the TCB news!  What a wonderful way to start the day!

Now I forgot everything I wanted to say and we're almost downtown.

I'm glad that Abie is doing better.

I had a most excellent visit last night with Mr. Moore and our own Jose and Jason. We (Mr. Moore and myself) saw Lestat. I'll leave it at that. We then went to O'Lunney's on 44th Street for a drink and a catch-up. Mmm, cheese fries!!! I've been so good this week I decided to splurge. Jason joined us halfway through the evening. We informed him how much he is missed and he appreciates our sentiments. Don't know if that's enough to bring him back any time soon.

DR Danise, does the driver on the bus say "move on back?"

Good morning, all!  I had a lovely day yesterday.  I wrote a few bars of a song I'm orchestrating as a gift for a lady I'm fond of, I lounged about and then I went to the theatre district to see LESTAT, with the festive group made up of my houseguest (and former intern) Dylan, DR Ben, my Toyland colleague Tom Murray, and my favorite NYPL music division librarian Bob Kosovsky.

What does one say kind about the boring mess LESTAT?  My friend Hugh Panaro was wonderful, as was my friend Carolee, and I thought there were about three good numbers in a score I found neither well orchestrated nor diverse enough.  The dramaturgist in me kept thinking, Oh no, not two numbers back-to-back for the same character and what the hell is going on in this plot.  Luckily, Act Two got a major kick with the arrival of the character Claudia, who brought a touch of Rhoda Penmark and other obnoxious children as well as a huge belt and some comedy.

By my calculations, the show's references to the "incorrect" vampiric ability of turning into wolf, vapor, etc. from DRACULA (still the definitive vampire book for me) happen around 1858, nearly 40 years before DRACULA's publication.  Miss Rice's vampires can't turn themselves into wolves, vapor, etc,, but they sure can suffer and get their historic dates wrong.  In the past I've found Miss Ann Rice's books unreadable and I thought her musical a bore.  Hard times for vampires.  Oy!

After the show, we all stepped out for a nosh and met our E&T DRJason, who's been doing concessions at various shows; last night was THE HISTORY BOYS, which I want to see.  We learned all about Jason's new job, which I believe begins next Monday.

TOD:
Tall Hope (and nearly all of the score to WILDCAT)

For those of you wondering about the future of DR Jose, don't worry, the man will never be out of work for long. He's got projects to keep him busy after Sunday. Things that will take him far and wide both theatrically and geographically. He does intend to resume posting in a while but things are busy at the moment so give him some time.

Have I missed it, or has someone already related the story of Carolyn Leigh and the tryout of LITTLE ME.  In case no one has told it:

Apparently, everyone was trying to save the number "Lafayette, we Are Here" and temporarily put some cuts to the lyric, just to test it out.  Carolyn Leigh reportedly said that she's a member of the Dramstists Guild and knows her rights, storming out saying something like "I'm protected, and that's the law."  The rest of the team went about trying to save the number, and a little while later, Ms. Leigh walked in with a policeman, saying to the cop something like "Arrest them.  They broke the law.  They violated my Dramatists Guild rights."

Cilliliz--I remember I wanted to ask what kind of camera you got.

Well I splurged - I got a Canon Rebel XT - It's a digital SLR.

I used to do a lot of photography with my old 33mm long ago. While I was in law school I was the photographer and student editor of the law school alumni magazine for 2 years, (I also wrote the law school musical - a parody on Oliver we called Law Lover)

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to getting back into photography a little.  With this camera I can do almost anything. I need to get a good telephoto lens and learn how to run the thing, but right now I have time and it should be fun.

Donald! What a great show this week!!! I love what I've heard of the CD and Miss Ford is quite a talent. I, like Ann Kerry Ford, am a fan of Kurt Weill and this just makes me even more of a fan. She does some beautiful work here. And thanks for the link to her Web site. If the Something Wonderful CD is as good as the Kurt Weill CD I'll be very happy with my purchases.

Re: last night's LOST.

spoilers.

I'm not sure what I think of the show. More confusing than imformative in some ways.

Here is the television without pity summary.

http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/story.cgi?show=136&story=9384

There are a few things i found interesting.

1.Desmond not pushing the buttom made the plane crash.
2.Henry Gale seemed to be the leader.

Of course there were things that i found confusing. Especially the last scene and why those Russians called Desmond's girlfriend.

DR MattH, I guess the interesting/daring thing you were referring to was them capturing some of the castaways. I think that could be very interesting. And it will let us know more about The Others. And hopefully the French woman's daughter will help them.

And I guess we will also find out what happens to Locke/Eko/Desmond.

I also watched parts of IDOL.

The show was okay. BUt I hate how they announce the winner at 9:58pm. My actual favorite part of the results show is hearing the final song and seeing everyone's reactions. ANd they always have to cut that part out.

The result was not surprising. But I wasn't particularly happy. I did like Taylor in the auditions. But to me he's just okay. I think it will be interesting to see what happens to him next.

To me, the most touching part of the show (surprisingly) was when Clay Aiken came out (boy does he look different).  They had this "bad" singer impersonator who had auditioned (saying he was like clay aiken) come out (to accept some dumb award). Then they had him sing (which was bad on every level). But then clay surprised him and did the duet WITH him. Well the kid was hysterical. BUt it was touching and sweet. And clay sounded great (and again, looked SO different).

Rodzinski and I only have a temporary reprieve from family visits.  Next week my brother and his family are coming to NYC for the first time.  My sister in law was raised here until she was 16 and has family in the area so they are not staying with us.  But we have volunteered to entertain my niece and nephew (16 & 18 yrs) and have them over for one night so that their parents can enjoy a night out on the town.  My brother is about 12 years old than me and we grew up in different states so I don't get to see him very often.  It will be Rodzinski's first time meeting all of them.

I am looking forward to seeing CLay Aiken's performance. It was during the second hour of the show, and I was intently watching LOST except at commercials, I'd flip over just to see who was on. I caught Dionne Warwick and Prince for a bit during those commercials.

I think it's telling that even these accomplished performers like Dionne Warwick, Mary J. Blige, and Al Jarreau had a hard time staying on pitch during their songs. (Blige was particularly off at the start, clearly a note under pitch.) True, the noise the fans were making was deafening, but it gives one pause to think how well most of the IDOL contestants stayed ON pitch this season.

Let me see if I've got this straight - you told Jason how much he's missed but you don't know if that's enough to get him back posting?  Why?  Did something hideous happen to him here - or were all those good vibes he asked for too much for him?  Sorry, I'm just not "getting" it.

As to dear reader Jose - well, I do hope he returns, but then again I'm not sure why he stopped.  We're ALL busy little beavers around here.

TPUNK, MY BROTHER NIKHIL is a Bollywood movie that came out last year...it is about a swimming champion who contracts HIV and has to tell his parents about that as well as the fact that he is gay. It spans 10 years in the young man's life.

It is one of the two first HIV related Bollywood movies. If you like it and are interested in the second one, MADHOSHI (a remake of PHILIDELPHIA ,but with a woman in the Tom Hanks role) then let me know.

I think all of LITTLE ME is simply marvelous, and I guess "Here's to Us" is my favorite number though I do like "Real Live Girl," "I've Got Your Number," and "Little Me" a lot, too.

Her lyrics for the PETER PAN songs that she wrote are superb, and apart from "Never Neverland," most of the famous songs that Peter sings in the show have Leigh's lyrics and not Comden and Green's.

I am very excited to see it, I hope to watch it this weekend during what I have designated as "couch time."

Your description of the films actually reminded me of a conversation I had with someone at GMHC who works in India most of the year on an outreach project to make the public, specifically youth, more aware of HIV.  He said that they were using entertainment as a vehicle- I wonder if either of these films was influenced by that project.

I am taking the Vixter, I was  a bit concerned it may be a liitle too old for her, but then her cousin who is only a year older was taken in April for her 14th  birthday (and well feted by DR Jose who brought her backstage and got Hugh Panaro  AND Carolee to sing Happy Birthday to her!)   She told Vixter all about it in glowing terms (so any "adult" issues either went over her head or were taken in stride).

So we are off to see it and had the good luck to discover that the lovely and talented  FJL himself will also be in attendance at that performance so I look forward to having  pictures to share with you all.

Are you a dog lover?

Have you been thinking about getting a new puppy,
but worry that you don't have the get-up-and-go to keep up with a high-energy pet?

Then let "Dogmatic" into your home.

"Dogmatic" will chase your puppy around the house or the yard.

"Dogmatic" will roll around and play with excited young pups.

"Dogmatic" will make sure your pup uses the paper you put down until he's housebroken.

"Dogmatic" will even walk your dog on a leash.

Of course, you will have to feed and water your new pet...and you'll get all the benefits of petting and holding your puppy, teaching him to play "fetch", and getting kisses on your face.

But "Dogmatic" will spare your energy levels so that you aren't too tired to go to your doctor's appointments, visit your siblings in their rest homes AND will keep your pet company while you take your naps.

"Dogmatic" -- the best thing to happen to tiring pet lovers EVERYWHERE!

"Dogmatic" -- a pet lover's dream come true!

Vixmom - I hope it works out in terms of grabbing a drink or bite (so to speak) after the show on Sunday, BUT if you and the vixter somehow manage to get the opportunity to go backstage courtesy of Jose, even on the spur of the moment, I will content myself with seeing you at intermission.

Any moment spent with you, no matter how fleeting, is sure to be treasured!!!! :D

The Vixter seems to be a mature young lady and so I'm sure she will be able to take things in stride.  Also, she might enjoy the character of Claudia.

My one concern, does Claudia's fate follow the book's storyline?

She hasn't really lived at home for some time and I don't think it's a question of age- she's 25 only 3 years younger than me.  Folks who know us both have said in the past that I should just wait for her to mature.  But recently I've come to realize that we are just very different people, and that we relate to people in a very different way.

Jason’s job sounds much more rewarding & fun than his previous one.  Will he have time to go on auditions now?

TPunk & Rodzinsky, have a fun filled family weekend.

Cillaliz, loved the photos.  Speaking of cats, I was playing with a long haired cat yesterday and once again my eye swelled up.  This time is only lasted until bedtime, not several days.  It is a good reminder why I shouldn’t get any cats again. :-\

When I worked at Togo's in high school, they sold individually wrapped chocolate and carrot cakes for 50 cents. They were soooo good.  I've seen similar onces since but they've never been as good as the ones from Togos.  I can't wait to go home for some lunch!!

Tpunk I would go see Awake and Sing. It's a little dry and if you're on a TDF ticket you will probably be up in the balcony of the Belasco so there may be sight line issues but it's a good, solid revival and seeing Ben Gazzara on stage even after his stroke was a sight to behold (in a good way).

Jane, Jason's new job is very flexible. It pays well, allows him time for auditions and he will now be able to afford classes. He wants to get into a dance class and go back to a vocal coach. Taking class can seem like a waste to some people, but it's an important part of the life of an actor, I think, especially if you have a good coach or teacher. You have to "use the instrument" to keep it fresh and alive. Sitting in the Equity (or SAG or AFTRA) lounge kibbitzing with other actors isn't enough. I'm glad Jason has the opporunity to start getting his ducks in order.

Desmond took over the hatch from a man whose original partner had been named "Rodzinsky"!

When Desmond challenged the reality of such a character, the other man directed his attention to a stain on the ceiling.

So I just placed a call to the clinical director for the program I recently interviewed with (twice).  I had been nervous about placing the call because he had initially told me to expect a decision by the end of last week.  And here it is approaching the end of this week and still no news.  We spoke briefly and he said they hoped to have a decision by next Friday.

So I took a deep breath, and now I'm having a glass of wine with my lunch.

I know that I am psychologically torturing myself.  I had 2 great interviews and know that there is only one other person being considered for the position.  And having worked in HR for over 3 years, I know how long it can take to make hiring decisions.  But that doesn't stop me from playing the what if game.  At least now I know that I can relax for the next week.

Which I plan to do while sitting on the couch this weekend watching a certain film sent by a certain HHWian.

DR MATTH - both DD's Third Season and the Special are scheduled to ship on June 7 - I thought that was the day they were both released.  Time will tell.

According to DVD Verdict, the DORIS DAY SHOW - Season 3 comes out next week. I guess the special is the week after and they will ship both of yours in one order when the special is officially released.

DR Tomovoz, are you familiar with a Greek pop singer by the name of ANTONIS DOMINOS? He has a CD out, but I cannot find it anywhere!! CDBABY.com has, or had, it...but now they say they are permanently out of stock, even though it is listed under new releases...doggone it!

I ask Tomovoz this question because Antonis was evidently a contestant in that Eurovision program that he is very fond of.

The talk of those CAMELOT stills that DR Ron won reminded me that I had intended to make CAMELOT my next DVD to be watched. I had forgotten about that, however, and put in instead A VIEW TO A KILL, Roger Moore's last James Bond film.

Hadn't seen it in awhile, and the whole thing is just tired. He's too old to be playing the part convincingly (his stunt double is about 20 years younger and much slimmer than Moore was at the time). Still, I'll watch the whole thing, and I'm only about 40 minutes in. I know it has a ways to go yet. But, since I'm not planning to watch any network TV tonight, I can finish this and still put in CAMELOT tonight.

DR Ron Pullman--I wanted to say congrats on all of your E-bay wins.

I have my own method for getting what I want.  I don't post a bid until the last minute.  Then I post what I would honestly pay the item.  Then I either win it or I don't.  I'm happy to say that most the time I do because the other bidder isn't expecting that bid.

I think I've only lost something one time and the person must have been right there because I lost it in the last fifthteen seconds.

Not to worry.  The same item came up for bid another time and I won that one.

DR Danise, Meat Loaf was on IDOL last night, but perhaps you might not want to see him. I found it a very painful performance. His singing voice is almost non-existant now, and he seemed to have a really hard time keeping time to the music. He also had "the shakes," if that is the accurate word for his affliction. He was paired with IDOL finalist Katharine McPhee, but why they did this is unknown. They couldn't be more different as artists, and she seemed very uncomfortable dealing with his attempts to sing with her.

Really very sad. I have already erased the show or I would have been glad to burn you a copy, but possibly it's best you don't see it unless you could stand to see one of your idols in less than top notch condition.

Have heard nothing bad - and so far no emergency rewrite requests -- so I'm assuming the shoot is going well. They had quite a long rehearsal period during which we ironed out any script problems. So I'm hoping all will go smoothly.

Talk about Reality Television! I just came back from lunch with my new agent (and my old agent) at a very nice restaurant. So, lunch over, the valet brought out my car and I got in.  A group of other diners were standing beside my car, waiting for their car, while I waited to pull out into traffic. This being LA, that can be a long wait. So as I'm waiting, my driver's side window still open, I glance up at the woman standing beside my car and catch her eye. She looks so familiar that I think I know her, so I say, hi. She says hi back -- at which point I realize that she looks familiar not because I know her, but because she's Paula Abdul. So I say, "Great show last night." And she says, "Were you happy with the outcome?" I told her yes and we talked a bit more, at which point traffic cleared and I pulled away. (And, yes, she's very pretty.)
...So - I may not have voted -- but I was heard!

DR MattH (and DR Danise) re: meatloaf.  Did the contestants get to pick their favorite artists to sing with?  Since they mentioned that Chris sang with his favorite band I thought that maybe the others got to choose as well.

I did not enjoy Meatloaf with Katharine. But I did like Mary J. Blige and Elliot.

Btw, on Tuesday night when Katharine sang "Over the Rainbow" she mentioned that her earpiece (the one that gets her in the right key for the first note) malfunctioned (i.e., it didn't work at all).  I don't know if all the contestants use this. But I was glad that it didn't screw her up for the entire song. And I thought it could have ended up quite unfair (since it wasn't her fault it didn't work and she was obviously counting on it).

Well, with the "evil eyes" in the photo of Nilla, I should have seen it coming....yup, he did it again, he attacked and attacked only this time we were at my parents' house. Dad and I tried to capture him to get him to the vet, but we couldn't get it done We finally called "the mobile vet" who came out. We trapped him in the den, and he literally ran up the walls- that was an amazing sight- we got him in a net, tranquilized him and he's now spending the night at the local vet.

This isn't good news. We can't figure out what triggers it.  He's either having some sort of psychological break or he's got a brain tumor or something.  Anyway, I'll know more tomorrow. I can't live with a cat who just freaks out and attacks me for some unknown reason.

Ron I needed that happy page 6.

Having completed all her tests today my friend was up to talking tonight.  Seems the good news she sent me wasn’t completely accurate.  When she initially told me she had a “mass” she neglected to mention a biopsy or the results of said biopsy-cancer.  The good news today is that it is contained.

She won’t know until after the mass is removed from her lung if it is a new cancer or one that metastasized from a previous cancer.

I’m back to being very scared.

I've lingered under many a coconut tree in Hawaii, vixmom.

Among other things...

Like this song and it seems to fit:

Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian...

I packed my bags and bought myself a ticket
For the land of the tall palm tree
Aloha old milwaukee, hello waikiki
I just stepped down from the airplane
When i thought i heard her say
Waka waka nuka nuka, waka waka nuka nuka
Would you like a lei? eh?

Let's talk dirty in hawaiian
Whisper in my ear
Kicka pooka maka wah wahini
Are the words i long to hear
Lay your coca nuta on ma tiki
What the hecka mooka mooka dear
Let's talk dirty in hawaiian
Say the words i long to hear

It's a ukelele honolulu sunset
Listen to the grass skirts sway
Drinking rum from a pineapple
Out on honolulu bay
The steel guitars all playing
While she's talking with her hands
Gimme gimme oka doka make a wish and wanta polka
Words i understand

Let's talk dirty in hawaiian
Whisper in my ear
Kicka poo ka maka wa wah wahini
Are the words i long to hear
Lay your coca nuta on ma tiki
What the hecka mooka mooka dear
Let's talk dirty in hawaiian
Say the words i long to hear

I boughta lota junka with my moola
And sent it to the folks back home
I never had the chance to dance the hula
I guess i should have known
When you start talking to the sweet wahini
Walking in the pale moonlight
Oka doka what a setta knocka rocka sis boom bocas
Hope i said it right

Let's talk dirty in hawaiian
Whisper in my ear
Kicka pooka maka wah wahini
Are the words i long to hear
Lay your coca nuta on ma tiki
What the hecka mooka mooka dear
Let's talk dirty in hawaiian
Say the words i long to hear

Ginny thanks for the link to Dusk.  In October we shall all go out for late night drinks.

Cillaliz, Vixmom & DakotaCelt I appreciate the vibes.

Cillaliz sending big Nilla vibes your direction.
I’m glad you are laughing about the call from your brother’s lawyer friend. ;D

Jane, I'm really sorry about your friend. Yipes, what a see-saw. Eat something soothing.

Cillaliz, maybe your cat is eating some shrub or something that is poisoning him? Happens to dogs and horses. Or maybe his teeth are acting up again? I hope the vet has a solution, kiddo.

Yes, I am back at the little cabin in the woods. How silent and peaceful it is. I had such a nice drive back up with my brother's son. What a great boy he is. So, after vaccuuming up the spiders and their hapless, mummified prey, I'm thinking I'll lie on the sofa with salad and a video... what to watch, what to watch??? Hmmmmm... something totally mindless would be welcome...

More tomorrow, friends. have a nice night.

Am all showered, shaved, and ready for tonight's informal reading.  I'm nervous again, because these are new actors, and the roles were sort of modeled on the actors who read last time.  But, that's why I'm so interested to do this, to see how it plays with totally different actors (save for me).  I will, of course, have a full report, although I may go grab a bite to eat right afterwards.

Cilla, I think someone mixed up Cilla and Nilla. I fear the story going around is that you ran up the wall and attacked your father.

Good evening! (an Alfred Hitchcock reference!)

The rain never got here, but it's still in the 70s outside after 11 p.m. I think summer is quick upon us, a month early!  :(

I finished A VIEW TO A KILL.

How do the Bond producers manage to find such ghastly actresses for their Bond girls? Tanya Roberts ranks right up there with Lana Wood and Denise RIchards on the wretched scale. I know, they're not casting them for acting talent, but, really, when they can find an Honor Blackman or a Diana Rigg that has beauty and talent, they should be able to have a better batting average than they've had.

Then, I put in the DVD of CAMELOT.

I don't think I've actually watched the entire movie since I saw it in a reserve seat theater in 1967. My god, did Josh Logan love close-ups or what? Way, way too many of them.

Since they dubbed Franco Nero's singing voice, I wonder why they didn't dub his speaking voice too to rid him of that Italian accent. I mean, I can see why Josh Logan cast him visually - he is one of the most spectacular looking men ever in the movies: beautiful build, those sparkling and piercing blue eyes, gorgeous features. But he just seems wrong as the French Lancelot the second he opens his mouth.

Just like the stage version, the movie is REALLY long. Perhaps they could have cut some of Arthur's outing in the woods when he tries to remember Merlin's teachings . And faster tempos on some of the songs (all of Guenivere's) might have speeded things along as well.

Had the reading, about which more later, then Jessica and I went off to sup at a nearby eatery.  I hadn't eaten all day, so I was really starving.  I ate a small pizza and a little spinach artichoke dip, but that's all I had all day, plus I jogged, so I think I'm probably all right.

We got high-speed cable about a year ago. It's good- the phone line is open for the campaign workers, survey takers, and charities to get through. The thing I don't like about cable, though, is that the cable runs down the hall and through the living room to the computer. And it cost twice as much as dialup

The best thing about dialup is that it keeps the phone from ringing.

So, I get a response from the board chairman about the minutes, and we only have one discrepancy, about which I am correct. We'll see what he responds with tomorrow.
