Title: RESTLESS IN THE CITY OF STUDIO
Post by: bk on May 29, 2006, 12:06:53 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have made you restless, and now, to combat said restlessness, it is time for you to post until the restless cows come home.

And the word of the day is: MENDACITY!

Starship had #1 hit in 1985  with "We Built This City".
I guess they would be the appropriate group to call to mend a city.

TOTD: I loved corned beef (also known as silverside) with mashed potatoes, cabbage and carrots.

It is still close to my favourite "comfort food".  I was and am also partial to lamb shanks.

Clarence Ray Nagin, Jr., has been re-elected as mayor of New Orleans, largely on his campaign promise to mendacity.

My mother hailed from upstate New York.  I mention this because what we loved to have her cook for us were tacos, enchiladas, and chili.  When Dad married her and moved her completely cross country to live with him in California, she took to her new home and it's cultural influences very well.

Hiya, early risers!

I inherited the big orange enamel-coated steel soup pot and big black enamel cooking spoon my mom used when she made her Soups. One was a beef-barley-mushroom, which we all liked very well. But The One we waited for, and were gifted with about twice a year, was the sweet and sour cabbage and flanken soup.

First she braised some short ribs (flanken) in the bottom of the pot, then covered them with gallons of water to simmer while she chopped cabbage and tossed that in. It went on all day, the simmering. There was something about tomato paste and kosher sour salt and sugar at some point, late in the day - with my dad standing over her, kibbitzing the seasonings. Apparently, HIS mother made it with raisins and lemons.

Sometimes, she would boil whole cabbabe leaves in water, then meticulously roll a mixture of lean chopped meat and matzoh meal and other stuff in the soft cabbage leaves - like "Pigs in a Blanket" - and drop those into the sweet and sour broth to cook for what seemed like hours. The flanken was taken out, to be used for something else.

The whole house smelled of soup for days, and the scent, wafting out through the kitchen windows, brought my father's brother - Oy! AGAIN he drops in without calling! Set another place! Bring me another bowl.

I will attempt this soup next fall in LA, I think. I'll drive down with the pot and the spoon - and the jar of kosher sour salt, which I also inherited...

TOD:  My Mom's matzoh balls and chopped liver were always just right as far as my tastes were concerned.   She had a special way of making both, and maybe I looked forward to them because I couldn't get them that way from any other person or restaurant.  As it happens, as the years went on, she's started adapting her recipe to more conventional ways of making both dishes, but still, no one makes those particular things to my taste the way Mom did.

Mom also made Mandelbrot - another all-day project. Those are the crispy toast-like cookies, not too sweet, with sliced almonds - flat on one side and slightly rounded on the other.

The cookie dough is mixed up one batch at a time, then laid out in a long roll shape for steaming. Then it's placed on a board to rest a bit while the oven is heating up. The roll - now flat on the board side, is sliced carefully across, and the slices arranged so carefully on a baking sheet, and toasted in the oven. Again, it seems to take ALL day. In the end, the mandel (almond)brot (bread) looks a lot like biscotti.

Mom also made a great potato kugel, which she called a "bulbenick" - maybe that can be the word of the day someday  :) :)  - but that required a certain amount of manual dexterity with turning it over and over at just the right point or else risking splattering with hot oil - the things she went through for us!  Now, her manual dexterity is of course not what it used to be, so that dish has fallen by the wayside.

Similarly, she used to make a great matzoh brei, which also reuqired precision timing - but for that one, my sister-in-law has taken on that recipe and makes it my Mom's way.

FJL - YES - the chopped liver!!! Last year, when she could hardly haul her old bones around, she insisted on making the chopped liver one last time for Passover! Nobody made it like she did - one of the great once-a-year treats.

When we were little kids, before Cuisinart, she had a big iron meat chopper with a crank, for the liver. As we got older, she would let us operate that thing. It was a very big deal... I will always regret that she got rid of that apparatus when she bought the Cuisinart...

About Matzo Brei - that was my dad's specialty. On Sundays. Only HE could do it, nobody else! Now, my brother makes it for special family brunches. Only HE can do it, nobody else! Apparently, it's a Guy Thing...

Mom also made Mandelbrot - ... The cookie dough is mixed up one batch at a time...
The batches can also be referred to as sets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandelbrot_set), of course.  And every cookie looks like itself, and it's smaller fractal parts!

Good morning!

Got a very good night's sleep and felt more energetic this morning than I have for the past week or so. I usually have a hard time adjusting to changes in temperature, and now that it's turned hot and humid, my body is requiring some time to adjust.

I haven't turned on my A/C yet, but I have a feeling it's going to happen in the next day or two. My old but very well insulated house can retain either heat or cool for several times after extreme temperature changes, but I've pretty much used up the spring coolness now and am relying on ceiling fans and open windows in the early morn to put some coolish air into the house before the sun's rays warm up the air too much.

I'm not certain about my usual lunch with best friend John today. I know his kids are out of school for Memorial Day, and I'm not sure he's working either, so if he isn't, he'll be home playing with them.

I've made up my mind that if we DON'T do lunch, I'm going to bake a cake. I haven't had one in many, many months and am just itching to "be bad" about my cake addiction. We'll see.

When I was growing up, my mom's fried chicken was second to none. So, I'd beg for it often, and we'd have it once or twice (if I was lucky) a week.

During college and afterwards when I moved back home while I worked on my master's degree, my mom had started making turkey tetrazinni, and that became my most requested dish of hers. I could practically eat an entire casserole dish of it by myself it was so good.

I haven't made any decisions about what I'm going to be watching this afternoon. I'm thinking something light and silly like CLUE perhaps.

If I watch something dramatic, it'll be something full of action like DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE or EXECUTIVE DECISION.

Today DR Sandra and I woke up at 4 a.m. to go to the sewage ponds to look for baby herons in the high nests. We waited a long time in front of the locked gates before we remembered today is a holiday and the city workers probably won't be showing up to let us in.

What is this - a holiday?

I had FIVE people at my auditions yesterday and they were all capable and I can use them.  I imagine I will have my BIG numbers at the session this evening....and then will make my choices.

I watched THE SOUND OF MUSIC yesterday....from the time Maria leaves the convent to The End.  I may watch again tonight before I have anything to say......

Hmmm....I don't know from Stuffy Smith (although his name seems to be a play on a cartoon strip character).

BUT if he worked on the BEULAH SHOW, he worked at the Roland Reed studios that also made ROCKY JONES SPACE RANGER, MY LITTLE MARGIE and THE GALE STORM SHOW, and SERGEANT PRESTON.

TOD:

Meatloaf and mashed potatoes!  In the summer time, corn on the cob was also added to the menu.

Fresh tomatoes and cheeseburgers were also VERY popular with me!  Add some potato chips and Pepsi...and it WAS summer!

Good morning, all!  Last night I shut the computer down, and I didn't want to start it up this morning while my summer guest was sleeping next to it.  I've been up since 7:30, working on the Act Two Toyland libretto, proofing a chart for Mario and reading a bit of the Benjamin Britten book.

I have absolutely no plans today, wich is great, and I'll probably watch some DVDs later after Dylan goes to Barnes & Noble for his 1 - 9:30 shift.

DR JRand55, I'm not answering the question I asked about Tarzan yesterday, but I am the Man Who Knows too Much today.

MBarnum I did a bit of research on Snuffy which is why I expect to recognize him if I can find a photo of him as a child.  I found one from the Handball Hall of Fame but he was too old by then.

George since I hadn’t read the book we also saw The DaVinci Code yesterday.  I found it enjoyable enough not expecting too much too begin with.

You are correct JRand55...in fact he appeared on MY LITTLE MARGIE a few times. AMOS AND ANDY was also filmed there and the cast of that show would often come over the the set of THE BEULAH SHOW.

My mom made many wonderful dishes but I never had to beg for them as she made them all the time...but the one special treat was her scrambled eggs...and when she made those for dinner it meant that she and dad were going out for the evening and I would have the house all to myself (as my little brother was likely out trashing the neighborhood).

My mother was a GREAT cook; the list of favorite dishes is endless:

Shepard’s pie (from lamb instead of beef)
Leg o Lamb
Wild rice (still the best), often inside of squab
Cheese cake
Danish apple cake
Fresh bread
Noodle kugel
Turkey soup with the best matzo balls
Turkey & tuna salads
Custard pie
Dark fruit cake with marzipan topping (absolutely the best in the entire world)
Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting
Spaghetti sauce (a thick meat sauce)
Liver sautéed in onions & sometimes mushrooms
Fresh whole mushrooms sautéed in butter
Clam dip
Ramaki
Meatloaf
Potato Latkes (I must admit Keith’s are better)
Fried mashed potatoes topped with Lyle’s Golden Syrup
Butter cookies

These were a few of my favorite dishes, everything was good.  The only things I can remember not liking were scallops.

At this time of year I always think of my mother.  May 20th was the anniversary of her death in 1982 and June 16th would have been her birthday.  So close to Memorial Day & our anniversary the time I spent in L.A. with my father, far away from Keith who had recently begun a new job, was not one of the happier times in my life.

I find it odd, in a good way, since my father is gone I don’t miss my mother as much.  Maybe it is just time and the years & so many other losses.

Memorial Day greetings!  DH Richard has been busy today with his Honor Guard doing cemetery ceremonies and the parade here in town.  DS Rob and I attended the latter, then went to the grocery to prepare for a nice family dinner of chicken and rice and green beans.  It's very HOT here today, but they say the rain will hold off until tomorow.

TOD - one of my mother's specialties, which I have never been able to duplicate, was chicken and dumplings.  She made fluffy drop dumplings that were like clouds.  She still likes to cook liver and onions and invites me to dinner when she does.

As for the Topic of the Day...

My Mom's Chinese Pot Roast - basically a Pot Roast made with soy sauce and star anise in the broth.  Sooo good, and I always put dibs on the potatoes and carrots that were on the bottom of the pot.

My parents would also make lumpia every now and then, Filipino eggrolls.  Totatlly addictive.  Ah, fried food!

When my grandmother was living with us in Seattle, she would occasionally make this rice-pudding type of breakfast dish.  With chocolate!  It was basically a sweet, rice porridge.... with chocolate!  And then you would spoon some more sugar on top of it once you scooped some into your own bowl.

But I have to admit that our favorite family meal was our bi-weeky trip to Ponderosa... And then Family Fish House during Lent - nothing like filling up on hush puppies before your meal arrived.  ;)

Jose, I am so sorry to hear about the closing of LESTAT; but, at the same time, I am very proud of you for your success!

Thank you.

And as I mentioned yesterday, I have a couple of other avenues to start checking out in more detail this week.  As for what some of those possibilities may or may not be... ;-)

-A tour of a currently running Broadway show.
-A tour of another currently Broadway show.
-A production of Follies where I'd have a 24-piece orchestra at my "disposal".  The money sort of sucks, but, for a full orchestra, I'm considering it.
-Some work with Walt DisneyWorld on a new show going up in the Park.

There were also a few calls and e-mails from DC for some fill-in work this summer.  I'm "tempted", but I do want to stay up here in the City for now.  We'll see.  But for now, I'm going to take advantage of my new-found free-time, and get more of my apartment in order, and also catch up on some Broadway shows.  -I want to make sure I'm fully "informed" before I go to the Tonys on June 11.

T.O.D.

My Mother's homemade Tamale Pie.  Knowing that I was a finicky eater, she knew I wouldn't eat anything with a corn meal crust on top, because it was something new that I hadn't tried before.  So, my Mother blended the corn meal directly into the other ingredients, and then topped the pie with more cheddar cheese.  It was heaven!

Unfortunately, my sister and I  (in our stupidity) allowed my mom's recipe book to go to the estate sale.

DR Jane.   Shepherd's Pie - with Lamb!  What else. (A vegetarian can be excused.
 Using Beef = "Cottage Pie"

Shepherd's pie peppered with actual shepherd. (not one who has been washing his socks by night).

TOTD: Favorite thing was marinated venison and mushrooms....

Love Kuchen and Kolaches. My paternal great-grandmother was a fantastic cook and her Kuchen was the best as was her sauerbraten. My paternal grandmother, who is descended from Germans who lived in the Czech republic, made wonderful apricot kolaches. She also made wonderful cinnamon rolls and other treats.  She even taught me how to make homemade noodles. BTW, blow dryers come in handy to dry them on a humid day!

I got back from seeing "X-Men III" a couple of hours ago.  It's supposed to be the last of three, but if you stay until the bitter end (meaning after ALL the credits), there's a 30 second coda that changes everything. ;) Otherwise, it was quite good...as good as comic book movies go.  The plot made sense, there was quite a bit of emotion (but only if you've seen the first two movies) and the special effects were fantastic.

Oh, and here's a bit of a SPOILER:

BK's very own landlord gets killed within the first 15 minutes or so. :o

So there really is a difference between Sheperd's Pie & Cottage Pie?
I thought they were the same & lamb was the proper way to make them, until I tasted other versions made with beef-yuck.

What is yorkshire pudding? I have never had it
Yorkshire pudding (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_29351,00.html) is a mixture of flour, eggs, milk, and the drippings from a prime roast of beef, baked in a very hot oven.  OK, you can use other kinds of fat, but it needs to be smoking hot when you add the batter.  Some versions include herbs or cheese in the batter.  It's a traditional accompaniment to a good beef roast, and somewhat resembles a popover in texture.

I got to see only the beginning of the Indy 500 yesterday. But that's what I live for anyway, as someone mentioned on here: "Back Home Again in Indiana."

In this day and age, I am so pleased they have stuck with Jim Nabors over the years. I can just imagine them saying, "Hey, kids don't know who Jim Nabors is anymore. We gotta get someone from American Idol." But this was the 29th year of Nabors. The only time I attended the race, we saw Jim being driven out of the stadium afterwards. He gave a little wave.

Mame was bit of a disappointment for me. My friends loved, loved, loved it and I certainly enjoyed it but there were small things that stuck out.

The show had the first performance on Thursday, May 25th and officially opened on Friday, May 26th. We saw the Sunday evening performance. Both Christine Baranksi and Harriet Harris seemed off. CB as Mame is doing A LOT of dancing. The show is choreographed within an inch of its life and she is doing a lot of the dancing. It is well choreographed and well danced but I don't know if CB is pacing herself yet. She seemed out of breath and rather nervous at times and though she got all her play laughs her singing high moments (not just notes) were not always there. Harriet Harris (who I love in Frasier and in Thoroughly Modern Millie) also seemed to be working through her character. She seemed unsure at times and seemed to be missing the core of Vera. She was screechy sometimes and it just didn't work.

On a positive note, the show had GREAT energy. The chorus was vibrant and full of piss and vinegar (to quote my father). Emily Skinner was very good as Gooch and Max von Essen did a great job as adult Patrick. The show is well directed and choreographed. It's full of color and great costumes. The set design is generic 20s/30s/40s. Nothing special and easily moved to another theatre.

As much as I love the score to Mame, seeing it again reminds me how much I love the play and the film Auntie Mame. Even though Lawrence and Lee wrote both the play Auntie Mame and the book for Mame they chopped up the story for the musical and made changes that I think weaken the show. I know you can't do, on stage, the whole Macy's scene where Roz Russell gets fired but changing it to a nail salon just doesn't work for me. I know the play and movie so well that the things chopped out just seem to leave big holes for me. Condensing the roles of Patrick's nanny who evenutally becomes Mame's maid along with Ito and Gooch, who, in the play, doesn't appear until halfway into the show into the one character of Gooch (Agnes Gooch delivers young Patrick to Auntie Mame at the top of the show for those who didn't know) has never worked for me. Oh, well. I don't want this to sound like a negative review because it's not. I enjoyed the show and I think by the time FJL sees it CB and HH will have settled into their performances. I would recommened it for many reasons. There is a large orchestra and when the baton goes down to begin the show and that sound rises out of the pit, it's wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! We left the show smiling and talking and sharing our wonderful evening.

So, FJL, that's my Mame report.

Well it is difficult to know with a Jerry Herman show. (But at least they're usually fun)

It might be fun placing "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and "Ribbons Down my Back" into La Cage's score.

Perhaps "I'll be Here Tomorrow" could be switched with "I am What I am".

Topic NOT of the day:
I'm listening to the "soundtrack" from Richard Lester's first film.  I loved the film - for the pop and jazz performers - back in 1962. "It's Trad Dad" aka  "Ring-A-Ding Rhythm". I managed to construct a more complete CD with 20 tracks. (There were 14 on the official album soundtrack and 4 on an EP - plus tracks by Gary US bonds and Del Shannon).

My next task is to "construct" a soundtrack album for Lester's next film "Just for Fun" - I've located 17 tracks so far. And no album as a starting point!

I did not get any sewing done this weekend as I had planned but I did: watch My Brother Nikhil, read chapters 1-3 de un libro de espanol, attend a barbeque in Queens, fruitlessly visit Target and Marshalls with the hope of finding a few pairs of shorts, and go on several walks and eat some lovely meals out with Rodzinski.

Regarding the topic on Sunday, the issue isn't so much content of the sites, but, and this applies across the board regardless of race, religion, age, creed, etc. it's the seeming constant need to be in communication. I don't deny that cell phones are excellent inventions but we got along without them just fine before they were invented. Some segements of society need to remember that and unplug. One of the reasons I had such a wonderful time in DC was the fact that we didn't have a cell phone or text message or computer moment among the three of us from the time we arrived on Friday afternoon until we left today. I don't have a cell phone but Karen and David both left their phones off (I could be wrong they may have checked for messages when I wasn't around) and we had great fun. We laughed, we reminisced, we talked, we ate, we walked and talked, etc., etc., etc., and there was no need to be connected to anyone else. It was glorious. Now Karen will be off to a vacation in Moscow and St. Petersburg and David and I will be back at our respective desks, all with the memories of our wonderful escapist weekend in DC over Memorial Day. Ahh, life is good.

I've spent the last couple of days doing almost nothing -- which was very relaxing. Had a bit of a movie marathon... Saw Fateless...then The Family Stone.... then Separate Lies.... then Prime.  Enjoyed them all  -- in different ways. I suppose "enjoy" is the wrong word for Fateless - a very hard film to watch. Especially for me. But I'm glad I saw it. It inhabits the same territory as The Pianist. An incredible performance by the young lead.
Separate Lies I really really enjoyed. A grown-up movie for grown-ups. And Tom Wilkinson is one of the best film actors working today. The other two were relaxing. Prime actually turned out to be quite touching.
I still feel like watching more movies. Might go out and return these and get a few.

That being said, I do agree with DR Ben about the being connected thing.  I love the days when I get in my car to go somewhere and realize I don't have my cell phone and I get annoyed at people of all ages who can't seem to go 5 mintues without talking on their cell phone. It's tradition that when a show is announced as an out-of-town tryout, the NYC critics tend to stay away.   MAME has been careful not to call itself an out-of-town tryout, but the idea that it's Bway-bound if all goes well was somehow leaked to the press.  There was a prominent item by Brantley on Baranski doing MAME in the Sunday Arts & Leisure section, which was unusual for something happening in D.C.  Maybe the NYC critics will review this one after all.

I've got some things to get settled and am very tired.  Think I'll sign off and make it an early night.  I started reading Snow Flower and the Secret Fan over the weekend. Think I'll go curl up with it and get some rest.

Oh, NPR - Talk of the Nation was on summer reading. They have a list of suggestions on their website..here's a link

Callie is exhausted. She hates the car and meowed for over 1 1/2 hours on the way home.  When we got home I threw away their shared litter boxes and bought new ones so ithey won't have his scent at all, and cleaned and scrubbed the eating area. I know I can't get rid of his scent for her completely, but I was going to start deep cleaning tomorrow anyway, so I can make somewhat of a dent.  She seems amazingly good.  I'll be curious to see how she acts when she's had some sleep.

A friend of mine said "If he did that to you, what do you think he was doing to her?"  I'm beginning to think he has a point.

I'm fine.  It was hard for a couple days, but I did what I had to do, and I am totally ok with it.

STOP TALKING ABOUT CAKE!!!  I have such a sweet tooth.  I'm trying to be good, but I may have to be bad - that said, I've only had 750 calories today, so I can do what the HELL I want.

I'm watching a really interesting VHS tape I found in the garage the other day, about which maybe more later.

Similarly:  "She was rotten to the corps, but great to the infantry."

Hello!  All caught up now.  This morning we spent cleaning around the house and Vixdad opened the pool for the summer.  Then DR WFO and his DP Joe came over and we had us a little barbeque with steak and potato salad and coleslaw and corn on the cob and for dessert we had angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries.

After the meal the Vixter tested out the pool and declared it offically open.

DR Vixmom - regarding The Vixter's interest in origami:  she might find it interesting that my DH, a retired teacher of math/science to gifted 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, used origami to teach geometry.  He also used the braiding of flat plastic twine (like you learn at camp?) in his teaching.

Oh, and I bet if I dig through all the Japanese stuff that exchange students have brought us over the years I could come up with some origami paper.  Would she be interested in that or anything else Japanese?

Jose gave the Vixter a bag full of little origami animals that he had made over the run of Lestat and which decorated his pit area.  They are beautifully made and she was very interested. I believe I have seen a book along the lines of Origami for Dummies or the Klutz Book of Origami recently that I may pick up for her  (maybe she'll even get to like math!)

They sell a lot of buffalo meat here in Washington, and it is very good.  I let others cook it, I just eat it.  There is a little hamburger joint (Tatanka's) just up the street, that sells only buffalo meat in their burgers, tacos, etc.  Otherwise it is a vegetarian restaurant.

Mame was bit of a disappointment for me. My friends loved, loved, loved it and I certainly enjoyed it but there were small things that stuck out.

So, FJL, that's my Mame report.

Interesting review report of MAME, Ben.  I know a lot of people agree with you about MAME vs. AUNTIE MAME.  My friend, Sharry, who is a great musical comedy star, has no desire to do MAME, but would jump at the chance to do AUNTIE MAME.

Personally, I think of them as two totally different shows.  I love the comedy in the play AUNTIE MAME, but I love the songs and dances in MAME.  Maybe I was spoiled, in that, I saw Juliet Prowse do MAME and she was absolutely incredible.

But then again, THE APARTMENT is one of my favorite Billy Wilder films, but darn it, thank God for PROMISES PROMISES.

I had a full evening of DVDs and TV. I first finished CLUE. I'll give Tim Curry credit for the breakneck recap of the plot he has to do near the end of the film before the murderer is revealed.

I think only the first ending has ever made much sense paired with the way the film works. The second one is second best while the third is so ludicrous that it should have scrapped and never shown in the theater. Of course, when I saw CLUE in the theater, Ending C was the one that played at my screening. I might have given the film a marginally better review had I gone to a theater where A was playing.

Next up, I put in CALAMITY JANE. I hadn't watched it from the Doris Day boxed set, so I thought it was time to do so. It's the same disc as the earlier one (which I had seen) just in a new keep case, but the Technicolor really does vary throughout the picture. It's fairly pale at the beginning, has the end of one scene that seems to drift out of registration for a moment or two, but most of it looks just great.

I ended the evening with the CSI: MIAMI rerun. As the best looking network TV show in high definition, I go out of my way not to miss it. It's just SO beautiful to watch. As it turned out, I didn't remember the identity of the murderer of the pedophile, so that was an added bonus.

Good Evening!

Well... James, my roomies and I were playing a game of "Killer Bunnies"* when our guest/former roomie starting having some sort of reaction to something.  Some stomach cramping and she started feeling feverish and broke out into a sweat.  Hmm... So, after her system had calmed down a bit - and after we made sure she was not having any other sort of reaction, we called a car service to take her back to the East Village....

I'm still trying to figure out what could have caused that sort of reaction.  She did try a two small squares of sugar-free chocolate we had here, but the maltitol in that usually had a laxative effect if it has any effect at all.  Hmm...  She was feeling a bit better by the time car came, and we'll be checking in with her in a few.

-Anyone know if there's anything else that might have caused such a reaction?  She's a vegetarian, and we had plenty of "safe" food at dinner for her to eat.

In the makes you think category...
DD emailed me (from Russia) - She and DBF were touring the Hermitage and other incredible places. On the tour was a woman with her husband. The woman had problems walking and with her sight and had obvious burns -- but, with the help of her husband, was doing it all. DD, who has all her life been drawn to people who are "challenged," spent the day talking to the woman. Turns out she is a nurse on disability. She sustained her injuries working in an abortion clinic in the southern US which was bombed! Although she is in constant pain she has made the decision to enjoy every day of her life. (I won't even address the kind of thinking that makes it morally acceptable  to maim and kill people in order to protect "the unborn.")

DR Matthew - Well, since it's not really a secret...  I will be assisting with the final call-backs for Disneyworld's new "Finding Nemo" show.  It will be the first Disney non-musical movie that is being turned into a musical.  The songs are being written by Kristen and Robert Lopez - Robert is one of the composer of Avenue Q.  Since Robert is currently in London getting Avenue Q up and running over there, my role as the "audition pianist" will be "enhanced" for lack of a better word.

Disney is building a new theatre in The Animal Kingdom for the show - they're building it where the "Tarzan Rocks" show/theatre used to be.  The production staff is quite stellar, and it's already attracting a lot of attention.  So...

I'm not sure if I'll get down to Orlando, but one never knows.  In the meantime, I'm looking forward to the final round of casting.

As for Mame coming into NYC...  Well... Just like the shows in the Sondheim Celebration series, none of them were initially mounted as a possible pre-Broadway engagement.  If Mame does end up coming into NYC, it will be because "someone" thinks it should, not necessarily because it was planned that way.

I know a bunch of people involved with the production, onstage, in the pit and behind the scenes.  They've been hearing the rumbles of "we're going to Broadway" for the past couple of weeks, but as with anything in this business... Until it happens...

For me, the MAME sequence of events proceeded thus: I saw a local production as a kid that blew me away. Fell in love with the songs on the Broadway Cast LP. Then when AUNTIE MAME came on TV, of course I was disappointed there was no music, so I didn't fully enjoy it. Then when I finally saw the film MAME I didn't enjoy that for reasons only Ben's Ant might not understand (he loves it outright). And so, I still seek a production as good as the community theatre production I saw when I was 12.

DR vixmom - If the vixter needs any origami paper and/or books, there is a wonderful Japanese bookstore at Rockefeller Center - just a few blocks away from American Girl Place, in fact.  ;)  -Oh, I believe I put the "folds" in a bag from the store.  Otherwise, I'd suggest a trip to the library - I believe I checked out every origami book from the Arlington (VA) Central Library when I was in middle school.  The books by Kunihiko Kasahara are practically bibles.  However, John Montroll's books are also worth additions to one's origami library - and since most of them are now published by Dover, they're also reasonably priced if you want to buy them.

Yes, I feel the same way. The writing just isn't there consistently, and the direction is pretty flat. That said, there are fun moments. Kahn underplays while most everyone else has popping eyes and obvious takes which totally deflate the comic potential.

I saw MAME on stage before I saw AUNTIE MAME on film, so MAME has always been my preferred version of the story, and the changes Lawrence and Lee made from the comedy script to the libretto for the musical don't bother me at all. In fact, I prefer fewer characters.

DR Ben, was the movie song "Lovin' You" added to this stage version of MAME? I dearly love that song.

I'm a Baker's son. We could have been related. (but not if Patti was the Baker's wife!).

Maria- If you could, tell me more about what you thought about THE FAMILY STONE. I found it disarming, and really enjoyed it.

I liked it, but didn't love it. You and TPunk should take a look at PRIME. That one I found surprisingly good. Even shed a few tears at the end.

After watching "Russian Ark" DP Colin and myself are planning to visit The Hermitage in the next year or so.

If Patti was going to play the Baker's Wife, a slight cold would have kept me from accepting the role.  Of course, I am sure we would have played to very large audiences.

As for Follies...  I've always wanted to be Yvonne de Carlo.

;)

Years ago, there was a short-lived sitcom on the CBC about my mother - a larger than life Hungarian woman (natch!). Blonde, (natch). Zsazsa accent, (natch). I had nothing to do with it - other than stupidly giving away the idea. When the head of TV drama at the CBC (also a Hungarian - my cousin, in fact) attended the taping of the pilot, he immediately said that the lead was miscast (true!). Not BIG enough, not colorful enough. We must immediately get another actress, he shouted! And whom did he suggest? Yvonne de Carlo! (A Canadian by birth.) They never acted on his perfect suggestion and the series never made it past two pilot episodes.

She could be allergic to aspertame. Did she have a headache?

Nope.  And that's what was a bit puzzling.  No headache, no rash, and her heartrate/pulse felt normal.  She just had a bad stomach, and she felt like she was running a fever all of the sudden.  We just checked in on her, and she's feeling better.  Whew!

Frankly, I blame it on Jose.

I over did it today, and I am in a great deal of pain; so, good night, one and all.

I am glad to hear that she is feeling better.  Hmmm... mystery...

I was just curious when you mentioned it. Usually when I have reactions to aspartame I get dizzy, thunderclap headaches and a stomach irritation.  My worst reaction is blacking out from it.
