Well, you've read the notes, the notes have rolled along merrily like old man river, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're merrily rollin' along right now and can't be bothered to come home. Damn them, damn them all to hell.
-
And the word of the day is: SYNECDOCHE!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in!
-
Topic of the Day: Donuts (or doughnuts)...any and all. ;D
-
SYNECDOCHE (noun): a figure of speech by which a part is put for the whole (as fifty sail for fifty ships), the whole for a part (as society for high society), the species for the genus (as cutthroat for assassin), the genus for the species (as a creature for a man), or the name of the material for the thing made (as boards for stage)
-
Good Morning!
Like DR George - As for the Topic of the Day... I really don't think I've met a donut (or doughnut) I didn't like... Or at least break in half and eat half of... And then come back a few minutes later and eat the other half.
;)
Otherwise, I really do enjoy the donuts from the Donut Plant here in NYC. -It was one of the first stops on the HHW Eating and Walking Tour.
Krispy Kremes are good when you really, really want them. -And just ok-good, when you just want some fried, sweetened dough.
I grew up with Dunkin' Donuts as well as a local chain called Pam E. K.'s. Those were some good donuts, and my favorite was a cherry-coconut one they had.
And there's the Apple House Apple Donuts off of I-66 between DC and Winchester, VA. You buy them by the bag... And by the time the bag has reached your car, it's already soaked through with the frying oil. But once you reach into that bag and pulled out those cake donuts made with applesauce and then doused in cinnamon sugar.... Hmm, hmmm good!
-
And on that note... High A-flat... And since I have a conference call in six hours...
Goodnight.
-
And on that note... High A-flat... And since I have a conference call in six hours...
Goodnight.
Well, I don't have a conference call, but I have to get up early, also. Good night Jose. :)
-
Well, I don't have a conference call, but I have to get up early, also. Good night Jose. :)
Okay, this is a little off. This post that I'm quoting above, was posted at 12:51:46am (HHW time), but according to The Official U.S. Time (http://www.time.gov/), I actually posted it right about 12:45:03a.m. (the U.S. Time website shows it as 00:45:03, though)! That's almost a seven minute difference. Very strange. :-\ And I'm posting THIS post at...12:49:30a.m. (00:49:30a.m.).
-
Krispy Kreme or watever it is called opens at our local shopping centre in 4 days time. I think there are only a few in Australia.
IMHO - too many. We could have done with out the McD etc too. I'm old fashioned enough to not want too much Americanisation of the planet.
-
SYNECDOCHE (noun): a figure of speech by which a part is put for the whole (as fifty sail for fifty ships), the whole for a part (as society for high society), the species for the genus (as cutthroat for assassin), the genus for the species (as a creature for a man), or the name of the material for the thing made (as boards for stage)
So, SYNECDOCHE is basically to words what FRACTAL is to geometry.
FRACTAL (noun): A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry. Fractals are used especially in computer modeling of irregular patterns and structures in nature.

All time is relative, George.
Not that all relatives should be timed, of course, but I've a few who could use a cut-off when they visit.

The bakery at the store where I work has, at long last, regained their ground re doughnuts.
Several years ago, the bakery department made their own doughnuts. They were very popular. Then someone at the corporate level decided it would be cheaper to sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts instead of our own. Since Krispy Kreme doughnuts were so popular at the time, it seemed like a no-brainer.
Ever notice how ideas that seem like no-brainers often end up ideas that have no brains involved?
Krispy Kreme over-extended themselves as a purveyor of doughnuts, and the whole mistique of doughnuts that really were freshly made wasn't there when a customer bought a box at the supermarket. Doughnut sales went down.
So we stopped selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts at our bakery department. The Krispy Kremes were relocated to the dairy aisle, right next to the Entenmann's. (I'm still unsure of why they are in the dairy aisle. All this took place before I started work at the store.)
But, instead of the bakery being allowed to resume doughnut production, either the same brilliant corporate guy or someone else trying to prove their brilliance decided our stores should next out-source our doughnuts, and a regional bakery started shipping their doughnuts to us.
Their doughnuts, having been shipped to us, weren't particularly fresh. And sometimes the delivery was late, leaving our "I've-got-to-have-my-morning-doughnut-or-die" customers... well, dying.
It's only been in the last couple of months that we've regained doughnut production at the store.
Our customers have noticed the difference. The doughnuts are fresher. They're tastier. They're BIGGER!
They, the customers, are happier.
We, at the store, are waiting for the next change someone at the corporate level will decide is a brilliant idea.

Again my thanks to the viewers of "Six Foot Under" .
How wonderful to see a final episode of a series that stayed with its characters and was not a "cop out" in any way. The final show aired here last night. A high point in American TV writing.
Good news today (hopefully not a rumour) that finance has been found for a third sereis of "Carnivale"
-
Good Morning DR Larry. The best of all "vibes" for you and your family at this this time.
-
Good morning, all! And hello, DR Tomovoz! I second your motion to stop the Americanization of the Planet. I believe this country's superior attitude of we're-the-best-goddammit! has gotten us into too much trouble all over ther globe, and spreading high-caloric foodstuffs is one more example. I personally want to try the cuisine of the country I'm visiting over the ubiquitous MacDonald's. Of couse, the one country exempted in England whose cuisine can only be improved.
Today's a busy day: edits with Mr Murray before he heads off to England or Chicago, a trip to my financial consultant, booking a ticket to Ohio, and whatever frustration and humiliation the universe decides to dump on me today.
Milton's Donuts in my hometown: I never liked their gooey, caramelly, jelly-slathered pastries and donuts (others do), but their cinnamin twists are a work of art.
-
I had a phone call from Derek's sister Maureen today, followed by this email. I'm sure she would like me to share it.
Derek's birthday was July 19th and the "memorial" should be installed at about that date.
Hello everyone
I just felt I had to pass the following on to you all. I wanted to do
something symbolic in memory of Derek and my thoughts obviously turned to
the theatre - surprise, surprise!! I contacted a lady (Lou Cox - Marketing
Manager) at our lovely Theatre Royal in Hobart to enquire about having a
plaque with Dereks name placed on one of the seats in the theatre. There
are many of these currently in place - some dedicated to an individual, some
to families etc. I thought this would be an appropriate 'memorial' - apart
from his obvious love of the Arts, he also worked there a few years ago, so
it seemed an obvious choice.
My enquiry, I'm glad to say has born fruit....and then some. Derek would
often ring us to say he had booked tickets for the family to some show or
other - regardless if we wanted to go or not!! - and he would always book
4TH or 5TH ROW FROM THE STAGE - he reckoned that was the only place in the
theatre to sit. Lou phoned me back to say she had organised the seat and
although she had no prior knowledge of Dereks seating preference, the one
that will bear Dereks name is F14 - 5TH ROW FROM THE STAGE!!!! And to top
it off - he is sitting right next to DAME NELLY MELBA - SEAT F13 - can you
believe that!!. I'm sure this was meant to be - either that or he's
watching and organised the whole thing - which wouldn't surprise me!. I
just don't know whether to laugh or cry so I think I'll do a bit of both
over a glass or two of wine.
I'm sure you will all be as thrilled as I am about this. My little brother
has one of the best seats in the house - he'll now be able to watch every
performance - although I can picture the look he would give to any shows
that don't meet with his approval.
Heres to my little brother - a standing ovation!
Love to all
-
Good day one and all!!
-
Lovely tribute Tom, for him. It is lovely way to honor his love of the arts.
-
I must be an odd American for I am not a fan of fast food joints. The smell in McDonald's makes me ill.
Also something I saw at McDonalds one time really bothered me and turned off from them completely. One of the workers dropped meat on the floor not far from a guy spraying for insects. The worker picked up the meat, put it on the grill to finish cooking and preceeded to serve it to a customer. I was sick.
-
TOTD:
Donuts and pastries....
Not a huge fan of them... But i do like kolaches, bagels, scones (especially peach and choco chip ones), euclairs.
I love cinnamon rolls when made well.
-
All time is relative, George.
Not that all relatives should be timed, of course, but I've a few who could use a cut-off when they visit.
True SWW, then there are times you wish you had more time!
-
That was lovely, Tomovoz. Thanks for sharing that with us.
-
This morning I went for a walk, and this is what I saw:
-
One of the ladies in my congregation is participating in a women's air race that takes off in a couple of hours. So I am off the the airport to cheer her on.
-
Very cool memorial for OzDerek! I'm sure that he and Dame Nelly Melba (http://www.rba.gov.au/CurrencyNotes/NotesInCirculation/bio_dame_nellie_melba.html) will get along famously. :)
-
This morning I went for a walk, and this is what I saw:
For the past few years, my mother has been desperately trying to grow sunflowers in her backyard but has had no luck in raising any. Ironic, because in South Jersey, sunflowers are almost considered a weed--often spotted in vacant lots and neglected fields. But in Mom's backyard, nothing doing.
-
I was back yesterday and now I'm back in the office with two days worth of work.
I have to go to the Credit Union at lunch and I have a large print out on my desk so there won't be much posting (unless I can sneak away) for the time being.
Suffice it to say that Roanoke was great fun. I saw the show three times (Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon) so I know B&TB better than most people. It's a small world in the theatre yet again. We were at dinner at El Rodeo on Sunday and Anthony was talking about last year's Forum cast and how they are different from this year's Beauty cast. He mentioned the ever present Nick Dalton (friend and former roomie of Jose) and lo and behold someone in the ensemble who is from North Carolina knows him very well. And that's why I love Theatre!
-
TOD:
I'm not exactly a donut connoisseur. If I buy small treats at a good bakery I usually go with tarts or mini tortes. So my taste in donuts usually runs to Dunkin' Donuts level. I prefer their chocolate cream, apple and spice and manager specials.
As for store bought, I like Entermanns' chocolate covered donuts (refrigerator cold.)
-
Tuesday morning greetings! It took great restraint not to stop on my way to work for a doughnut (yes, I peeked in and read without logging on).
Sorry I wussbergered last night. We were having those "the sky is falling" thunderstorm predictions so I disconnected the computer and went to bed. Never stormed, as far as I could tell ::)
-
Milton's Donuts in my hometown: I never liked their gooey, caramelly, jelly-slathered pastries and donuts (others do), but their cinnamin twists are a work of art.
And, DR Elmore, don't forget Central Pastry's fried Danish, a melt-in-your-mouth confection of a doughnut!
-
Good morning all. My investigator just went out to get us bagels...now I'm wishing he was getting doughnuts instead.
When I was in college, there was a palce called Joe's Bakery that opened at midnight to sell doughnuts that were fresh from the cooker. I don't know that there was anything that special about them other than they were soooo fresh. We all made an almost nightly Joe's run and the line would be a block long.
-
Wow! Page 2 Doughnut dance
-
Better get back to work. Now I have visions of Joe's doughnuts, Doughnut Planet doughnuts and oh just a beautiful chocolate eclair dancing in my head....this bagel isn't going to cut it
-
All the thunderstorms were at my house. The sky kept lighting up and the thunder rattled the windows
-
Krispy Kreme opned several shops on Long Island two years ago with great fanfare and generated huge lines....
They closed the last shop on Long Island on April 30, 2006.
I did love their just made still hot and dripping glazed donuts...
Dunkin' Donuts which has resided in the same spot on our main drag for the past 40 years makes a delish butternut cake donut that I love
-
Hollywood director, Vincent Sherman, has died at 99. Sherman..a contract director at Warner Bros. during the golden years...directed several well-known films like The Adventures of Don Juan, Mr. Skeffington, Old Acquaintance, The Young Philadelphians, and what has become regarded as a minor classic over the last few years, THE HARD WAY, with Ida Lupino. He had affairs with legendary actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford and also have worked as an actor with John Barrymore in Counsellor-at-Law. I was fortunate to know Mr. Sherman ever-so-slightly, seeing him at the Ray Courts show and have corresponded with him and spoken on the telephone with him (which led to an inivitation to cocktails at his place that, through a chain of circumstances too long to relate here, never alas happened). But everytime I saw him, he was cordial and courtly, sharp as a tack and a great raconteur...and he was then well into his nineties, though he looked years younger, always impeccably dressed, aristocratically handsome with genteel Southern manners and graciousness. He also wrote a smart and honest biography, Studio Affairs.
-
There used to be a donut shop in Lexington, fairly close to the University of Kentucky, called Tastee-O's that was open 24 hrs. I don't remember the donuts as being better or worse than any others, but they certainly seemed that way when you were getting them fresh and hot at three o'clock in the morning. It, like many classic landmarks of my youth, is now alas gone.
-
Dear Elmore,
I am glad you are going to spend time with your Dad. My prayers and those of my congregation continue for you and yours.
and of course
~~~~MUCH VIBAGE~~~~~
Sad to hear about Mr Vincent, DR CP. His interviews on the TCM "breaks" are always interesting....
-
Sending MORE good thoughts and vibes to DR ELMORE & family.
-
Loved the pet pics from DR MBARNUM yesterday....
DR VIXMOM is on the move....congratulations are in order, I bet!
DR CILLA LIZ is back to work - and sort of has a new cat!
News is busting out all over here at HHW....and MR BK is jogging an EXTRA few blocks....whew!
An airplane race? I remember a movie about a women's powder puff derby...and I think Joan Davis was one of the contenders....
-
Childrens' Workshop on theatre traditions went well yesterday. Ended the session by welcoming them to the stage and playing "There's No Business Like Show Business" and telling them about their new "anthem."
-
Act One runthru was about 55 minutes....and five of 9 people were ALMOST off book!
WE dont have Dunkin' Donuts here in North Dakota. Fargo does have a Krispy Kreme. Not impressed with it.
-
Good morning!
Warmer than the last few days, and I'm sure the A/C will be turned on today. Still, not too shabby being able to wait until June 20th to turn on the A/C for the summer. Last year, it had to come on in early May.
If we get the thundershowers in the forecast, it may cool us off enough to turn off the A/C, but I'll go ahead and turn it on when I go back downstairs and turn it off if I need to.
-
Tomovoz, that sounds like a lovely and fitting tribute to OzDerek. Thank you for sharing with us.
-
I read about Vincent Sherman's death when I logged onto the internet this morning. I find a lot of his films very entertaining. Thankfully, Warners has interviewed him about many of his films so the interviews and commentaries can be inserted into DVDs when they're finally released.
-
Ech, I am just back from the gym and it is miserably hot and sticky. I'm going to hop in the shower to see if that helps cool things off. But after reading this morning's posts, all I really want is a donut.
-
DR Ginny should we respond on line by email?!
BONUS: I was in my living room.. My mom told me. Iwas 6.
I rememrb vividly watching the TV with my whole family gathered around and both my parents crying.
I asked why there were no cartoons on and my Daddy told me that it was because in cartoons the characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck and the Coyote from the Roadrunner cartoons, get hit with hammers and anvils and shot with shotguns and dynamite but no one ever gets hurt. But in real life things don't work that way.
-
I grew up with Krispy Kreme doughnuts, so they will always have a special place in my heart. I know they don't appeal to a lot of people, but I love them.
I don't much care for the cake doughnuts with powdered sugar on them, but just about any other kind will find me a pure glutton.
I've told this story before, but back when I was in high school and on the swim team, we would head uptown after practice every day to the local bakery that made a confection called Creme Horns. They were a flakey pastry stuffed with whipped cream, and it made all those laps worth it to get one as a treat each day after practice.
-
Definitely putting in the DVD of THE DOLLY SISTERS today for viewing.
With only RESCUE ME tonight as TV viewing bait, I'll be DVDing and DVRing it most of the evening. I would like to watch NIGHT OF THE IGUANA and get it cleared off the DVR.
-
Oh!! I had forgotten about the donuts from some of the new in-store bakeries at Safeway! -At least in the DC Metro area. Those are some very good donuts! And you get a Baker's Dozen for about half the price of a dozen Krispy Kremes. The apple fritters are my favorite.
-
DR Tomovoz - Thank you for sharing that letter from Derek's sister with us. A beautiful tribute for a beautiful person.
-
Of couse, the one country exempted in England whose cuisine can only be improved.
And the cuisine of Australia is....?
;)
...ostrich burgers and kangaroo sausages?
-
I like all kinds of donuts, but prefer the more cake-y kind.
-
Yeah, "air race"? What's that all about?
-
Today is '50's & '60's Day in our Audio Visual Department. Here's the Trivia Quiz:
1. What 1959 motion picture holds the record for the most Academy Awards and how many awards did it receive?
"Ben-Hur" -- won 11 Oscars (out of 12 nominations)...tied with "Titanic" which won 11 Oscars out of 14 nominations (which was a tie with "All About Eve" for most nominations)...and tied with "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" (11 wins out of 11 nominations...the extremely rare "clean sweep").
6. What young actor of the 1950s died in a car crash with only three motion pictures credited to him?
James Dean
7. This actress received her first Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 1955. Who was she and what is the name of the film?
Best Actress of 1955 was Anna Magnani for "The Rose Tattoo". As this award was presented in the CY 1956, I'm not sure if you're asking for the year of presentation or year of performance being awarded. In CY 1955, Grace Kelly was awarded the Oscar for her performance in "The Country Girl". In both cases, it was the ONLY Oscar ever presented to these actresses...so the "first Oscar" designation in the question is misleading and a red herring.
8. The robot Gort debuted in what movie and in what year?
"The Day the Earth Stood Still" -- 1951. It was both a debut and a finale as Gort never appeared in another movie.
12. Sidney Poitier received his first Oscar nomination for what film and when was this film made?
"The Defiant Ones" -- 1958. His co-star, Tony Curtis, was a co-Best Actor nominee.
BONUS: For those who were really a part of the 50s and 60s-- Where were you when you heard President Kennedy had been shot?
I was in band...5th period...Wade Hampton High School, Greenville SC...Sophomore year.
-
I love Krispy Kreme. But they closed the one near here last year! :(
When it was open you could drive by and smell it. Plus they always gave you a free one while you waited!
-
Donuts = Good!
-
DR Tom thanks for sharing that story. It made me cry!
-
CP, I am glad to know you got to meet Vincent Sherman. I remember seeing him at one of the Ray Courts shows that I went to. I did not go up and talk to him, but my buddy Ron did.
-
I am staying home from work today cause I feel crappy. It is likely just allergies, so no vibes necessary...perhaps I can catch up on some movie watching....or actually catch up on transcribing some of the audio interviews that have stacked up over this last year!!!
-
Or you could drive up to Portland to see "Water"...
;)
-
Hi, all!!
First - the OZDEREK memorial is so great - it should happen to me!! Thanks for sharing such a good story, Tom.
Donuts - well, when I was doing Man of La Mancha in Lake George a hundred years ago, I would wait for the little lunch wagon guy to motor by at about 2:30 every day - and buy his last plain "old-fashioned" donut, which - by 2:30 - was a hard greasy hockey puck sort of thing - but, egad! did I LOVE it! I was Not Eating, in those days - so except for my dry salads each night, those hockey pucks were IT for me. The absence of frosting or flavor made them seem okay to me...
AND there was a great muffin shop on the south side of 86th Street between 2nd and 3rd, when I lived on East 89th all those years ago... eventually, I had to cross the street to avoid passing this shop, which had the tastiest, most humongous raisin bran muffins I ever had. They were about the size of volleyballs, I swear - for about a buck apiece. Ah, but that was many years ago...
-
Yesterday afternoon I finished creating my presentation for my interview next Tuesday. I'm so happy with it. I don't know whether to rejoice or mourn - I feel so certain I'll be offered this gig... Huzzah! - which means farewell to this idyllic cabin-on-a-stream-in-a-forest...<sigh>...
But it is time to move on. I have miles to go before I sleep...
-
Off I go to feed these squawking birds! I'll leave tomorrow, after their peanut frenzy. Take my time going down south. Too bad the weather has only just cleared... but within 10 days, I'll be back for more.
-
TOD: we've had this topic before, but I will repeat this for all donutophiles (and you know who you are):
You must (as in must) try the chocolate cake donuts from the Upper Crust Bakeries (formerly Dunford's) found in all Dan's Grocery Stores in Salt Lake City. These are such incredibly chocolately wonders that we used to have my Mom FedEx two dozen at a time to us, which we then froze and ate over the coming weeks (well, OK, sometimes days ;D). When we were in SLC last summer, one of the first things we did was drop by a Dan's and get our "supply" of donuts. Mmmmm, mmmmm, good.
-
For the past few years, my mother has been desperately trying to grow sunflowers in her backyard but has had no luck in raising any. Ironic, because in South Jersey, sunflowers are almost considered a weed--often spotted in vacant lots and neglected fields. But in Mom's backyard, nothing doing.
LOL...she apparently has the same luck I have had with hollyhocks.
I can grow almost anything...but never intrust me with the planting of hollyhocks...they won't grow no matter where I plant them.
-
For those who've read the Kritzer saga you know that the best donuts ever were Helms, which were put on the Helms truck and then driven through every neighborhood near their bakery. For those who haven't read the Kritzer saga - WHAT IN TARNATION ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
-
Heading downstairs now to start lunch preparation.
Betty Grable and June Haver await!
WBBL.
-
I've always been partial to Dunkin' Donuts over Krispy Kremes which are too sugary even for me. I also loved a little donut shop my mom would take us to sometimes on Friday mornings before school. I would get a chocolate milk and a giant apple fritter. Man could I put it away as an 8 year old!
-
Tomovoz, Thank you for sharing Maureen's letter with us. That is a lovely memorial and I am sure Derek is is quite pleased!
-
Okay I must get ready to face the day. Toodles!
-
RLP, I too, am awaiting to hear what the partners talk has resulted in. I suspect nothing can change the course of events from now taking place however.
I have mixed feelings but my head is overruling my heart in this one.
-
Okay I must get ready to face the day. Toodles!
Why does this sentence bring to mind the airport hangar sequence in "Miss Congeniality"??????
:D
-
RLP, I too, am awiting to hear what the partners talk has resulted in. I suspect nothing can change the course of events from now taking place however.
I have mixed feelings but my head is overruling my heart in this one.
Wow! I just sent you a private message about this....so....
I'd be on pins and needles in anticipation of just "what" my boss would say.
The one thing you need to keep reminding yourself of is that you have a "better" job offer. No matter that your heart tells you what you'd rather do...without assurances from your current boss, the new job is a blessing.
-
Vibes to Vixmom...
-
The week here in Oakland is going to get hotter and hotter. We had a nice night...cool breeze from the ocean...but things change today.
Winds are shifting and we'll be getting breezes (!) from inland (and off the deserts of the western U.S.).
It's already hazy and kind of smoggy out....really not the kind of day one wants to expose one's lungs to.
-
DR Ginny's bonus question:
This has been a bone of contention in our house. I was 2 years old. My dad claims he was home sick and was babysitting me while mom was somewhere else. Mom claims she was home with me and Dad was at work.
No matter the outcome....I was at home with one of my parents. I think they were probably both home since they both remember being home when it was announced.
-
DR JRand - No, I don't have a new cat. I haven't seen her since Sunday morning. It's been rainy so I think she's probably at her home and they haven't let her out due to the weather. So, I'm glad I didn't try to keep her, someone would have been quite sad.
-
DR JRand - I am enjoying A Short History of a Small Place. With all the detail it's a slow read, but it's worth taking the time. This may be one I read again, just to absorb it all. I just finished the Junious section and was laughing and laughing. I have a friend who will adore this book. Her birthday is coming up so I'm going to get her a copy. Thanks for the recommendation
-
Regarding JFK: I was in my mom's womb...but my sister was on the couch watching a soap opera when the it was announced.
-
VIBES TO VIXMOM - Sounds like wonderful changes are in store for you
-
Elmore informed me via email that Julian Slade, the man who created the wonderful British musical SALAD DAYS, has passed on.
Maybe it's late, but I shall wait, and I will have waited for one good reason
Regarding JFK: I was in my mom's womb...but my sister was on the couch watching a soap opera when the it was announced.
Was is As The World Turns? I think that's my mom's story, that she was watching ATWT when the announcement was made
-
Better go back to work. I need to do a jail visit and a hospital visit this afternoon.
-
Lovely tribute to Derek - thank you for sharing it, DR Tomovoz.
-
I'm trying to get up the energy to jog. It's not working.
Just came from the Audio-Visual Department - the manager looks so cute in her poodle skirt and white tennies. They were showing Fun in Acapulco and handing out Twizzlers and Tootsie Rolls.
DR MBarnum - as I was driving to work today, I was trying to think of a not-too-serious illness that would allow me to do exactly the same thing! Vibes, anyway, for a refreshing day off!
It's nearly 9:30 a.m., and I'm hungry for leftovers from last night's supper.
Lunchtime here, DR Ron Pulliam, and I just had leftover macaroni salad from last night's dinner.
Was is As The World Turns? I think that's my mom's story, that she was watching ATWT when the announcement was made
Yes,
THe BBC pre-empted Doctor Who in Great Britain...
-
DAng you Ron!! Now I am hungry :-)
I want CHocolate though...
-
I agree Ginny, he needs a doughnut..
-
Tom just mentioned the passing of the composer of Salad Days, a sweet, small piece that had a great run in and outside of London. I, too, just heard the news. Here is a link to an obit from The Guardian
Julian Slade (http://arts.guardian.co.uk/news/obituary/0,,1801400,00.html)
-
Funny in this area we have a saying with the word doughnut and it refers to the weather.
In the winter we refer to subzero temperatures as below the doughnut!
-
I was 10 years old and home sick from school that day. I was sitting on the couch helping fold laundry and the news came on. My sisters arrived home from school soon after that.
-
Welcome back, DR Ben. Glad you had a good trip to Virginia.
-
I am seeing Hot Feet tonight, for free. Based on everything I've heard it's about the only way I would see it. Thank you Actor's Equity.
Hot Feet (http://www.hotfeetthemusical.com/)
The show has received some of the worst reviews of the season. It's The Red Shoes with the music of Earth, Wind and Fire
The dancers were generally lauded but most everything else was trashed.
Here is
Peter Filichia's (http://www.theatermania.com/content/news.cfm/story/8160)
review of the show from Theatermania.
Thank you, Ginny. It was nice to get away. In two weeks I get away again. Anthony will be done July 2 and he's back in the city on July 3rd. Since I have that Monday and Tuesday off we will be getting away for the week.
-
Back from my jog - then did thirty pushups and now want to throw up on the ground.
Oh, and here is the story of the errant and truant package:
On June 8 I ordered four CDs from an Italian label called digitmovies, from their online store. CDs are supposed to arrive three to five days after they're ordered. I wrote them last night and got a response that they'd never received the order (payed through paypal). At the time of the response I thought I'd ordered it later than I actually did - I went through my paypal receipts as far back as 6/10. Then I placed the order again, paid through paypal again and then, on a whim, went back and looked through paypal again, this time further back. Well, there it was - the "completed" payment on 6/8. I wrote them again, very perturbed, and they got back to me right away - they "found" the order, and instantly refunded my money into paypal for today's reorder. They're shipping tomorrow, which means I won't have it until next week.
-
Was is As The World Turns? I think that's my mom's story, that she was watching ATWT when the announcement was made
Very possibly! I can't recall which one she said it was. And now I am wondering why she would have been home watching a soap opera instead of being at school? Hmmmmm!
-
Aside from being stuffed up I am enjoying my day off! LOL!
BK, I just took a look at Digitmovies.com...wow, some nifty CDs! You must tell us what ones you are getting!!
It is official. After 14 years and one month I am leaving for a new place of employment.
I probably won't be here days anymore therefore I will have to make a greater effort to be here in the evenings!
-
Elmore informed me via email that Julian Slade, the man who created the wonderful British musical SALAD DAYS, has passed on.
Maybe it's late, but I shall wait, and I will have waited for one good reason
Here in the sun, the sun, the sun, I might be in love by the end of the season
—"I Sit In the Sun"
I just happen to have this CD here at work with me. I'm going to listen to it as soon as I get back from lunch.
Congratulations Missy!
You couldn't have stuck it out for 11 more months and made it to a nice round 15 years ;)
Who knows, maybe you would have received a clock?
-
I will be the lucky recipient of a mantle clock in December, two months after my 15 year milestone at the Foundation Center. Although I appreciate the sentiment, I've seen the clock and I would rather have the Fortunoff Gift Certificate. Unfortunately, our human resources department is rather unwilling to bend in this area. Requests have been made every year by 15 year employee recipients and they have been met with a firm NO!!!
No, but I read this one:
And the cuisine of Australia is....?
;)
...ostrich burgers and kangaroo sausages?
HUH???
Austrailian cuisine starts with it's English heritage, but rapidly expands from there, heavily influenced by it's Asian neighbors but also by immigration from Greece, Italy, Lebanon, and other nations. Add the abundant seafood available, lots of fresh produce, and an active lifestyle, and you end up with a healthful, vibrant fusion cuisine that many other nations should try to emulate.
Think of it as California cuisine done right.
Except for the vegemite. That just doesn't make sense.
Very possibly! I can't recall which one she said it was. And now I am wondering why she would have been home watching a soap opera instead of being at school? Hmmmmm!
Interestingly, I read somewhere that the single most common memory of where people were at the time of the announcement that Kennedy had been shot; was watching As The World Turns -- even with people who never watched soap operas.
The memory is actually a result of watching and rewatching the replay that was shown repeatedly during the days and weeks following the assasination, which included a clip from ASWT being interupted by Walter Cronkite. Even though I never watched ASWT, I can still see that scene from the show which featured Don Hastings as Dr. Bob Hughes.
Spent the entirety of this afternoon with the DVD of THE DOLLY SISTERS. I first watched the film all the way through.
Then, I rewatched it with Dr. Drew Casper's commentary. He has interesting facts, but he's rather like the absent minded professor repeating himself occasionally and occasionally dithering in his speech just a mite. Whoever laid this commentary down for the DVD could have done just a tiny little bit of editing to not make him sound the tiniest bit overwhelmed with the number of words he wants to say.
-
BTW, THE DOLLY SISTERS looks better than the DVD-R I had burned from the Fox Movie Channel broadcast. It went into the trash last week in anticipation of the arrival of this commercial DVD.
-
Coongratulations on your new job, DR Vixmom. Onward and upward!
-
Tonight, I plan to watch THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA in order to clear it off the DVR.
The DVR is capturing the HD-Showtime presentation of BE COOL which I never saw at the theaters last year and will watch at some point this week. I wasn't a huge fan of GET SHORTY, but I liked it eough to see the characters continue in this sequel.
-
I'm on the phone with US Air, and they are pigs! They claim that since my new flight is less that 14 days from today, I need to pay them an additional $144, making the trip $396! As for bereavement or medical reasons, I can go fuck myself. Am I happy? Oh, yeah.
-
Congrats to Vixmom.
elmore, I hope you told them a thing or three.
The Dolly Sisters - I was disappointed in all of the current Grable box in terms of color - they're all a bit lackluster, with none of them reaching the heights of Down Argentine Way. As for Professor Casper, he is one of the most pedantic and irrititating people I've ever had the displeasure to waste my time listening to.
-
Actually, it's worse! The assholes want to charge me an additional $100 for changing the reservation, making it $496! This is outrageous, and I will not pay it. I've spoken to the manager of the department and her attitude is screw you.
-
I'm keeping the original reservation for July 18, and booking my next flight on United Airlines instead of US Air. Right now I am livid and angry beyond belief.
I'm sure you meant WEEK-END IN HAVANA since DOWN ARGENTINE WAY is in the Grable box.
-
Yes, Weekend in Havana - that looks great, and much better than anything in the current box - transfers are all sharp, but the color is off and nothing pops the way it should.
elmore, do write a really nasty note to the corporate offices of US Air.
-
I wonder if the engineers at the DVD processing factory are tuning the color down on purpose? WEEK-END IN HAVANA is the only one that's had that truly rich saturation, and I watched THE GANG'S ALL HERE on the Fox Movie Channel last week, and it's not deeply saturated either which leads me to suspect that the upcoming DVD of it won't be as well.
-
But don't get your blood pressure in an uproar, DR Elmore3003!
-
I took a nice nap and feel rested but still stuffed up. Something is blooming somewhere and it is driving my allergies crazy!
In other news I have labeled and packaged up the photos and stills from my Tony Russel interview, and will now label and package up the photos/stills for my Sara Shane interview...then both will be off to their respective publications for publishing (sooner rather then later, I hope).
-
Just spent a great deal of time in line (or "on" line as the people out here say) at the Post Office. The line was practically stretching outside the building. And they can only man this place with three people?
I was sending a registered letter because I am trying to recoup my fee for a freelance magazine piece I wrote last November! I am trying to keep good records in case I have to take these people to small-claims court.
-
Congratulations on your new job, DR Vixmom. What kind of work will you be doing?
Good Afternoon!
Inhale Pink...
Exhale Blue...
I finally turned on the A/C. House feels infinitely more comfortable.
Off to do my usual cleaning chore and then some reading before going back to viewing.
Well... My "AAAARRRGGHHH!!!!" that I posted earlier today was in response to a couple of things. -I can't share all the details, but... Let's just say it's been, in the words of Charlie Brown - at least I think it was Charlie Brown... This has been a very discouraging day... Well, more like very frustrating.
-An upcoming project/gig may end up getting postponed due various reasons/problems.
-When I checked my most recent cell phone bill this morning, it said I owed over $800. What?!?!?! At first I thought, "Hmm... Did I really talk that much last month?" Well.. Upon closer inspection, it appears that my "old" cell phone number got hijacked and there were at least 200 calls to the Dominican Republic and elsewhere. Of course, the calls to the Dominican Republic ended up incurring additional long distance charges. So... -Let's call Customer Service.
-Well, that Customer Service rep couldn't help me, let's call again...
-Well, that Customer Service connected me with the Fraud Department, but then once I made my way through the menus, I was routed back to the regular Customer Service department...
-Well... This time the Customer Service rep stayed on the phone with me while I was connected to the Fraud Department... And, yes, once again, I was routed back to the regular Customer Service Department.
-So... "Excuse me, do you think this would possibly go faster if I went to the store and dealt with this in person?" -That may help you get this problem resolved faster.
-So... I get to the store. Not too long a wait. "Erik" ended up calling the Fraud Department, and he too ended up getting routed back to the regular Customer Service department. Eventually, he got a hold of a live person, and then was put on hold... We had a nice chat and went over all the numbers on my bill, seeing which ones were mine and weren't. After a couple more minutes, I was informed that the Fraud Department is now looking into my case, and I should hear something back from them on Thursday. Of course, the advised that I call the Fraud Department back myself to be on the safe side.
-And that's basically been my day so far. Hmm...
Who's up for 2-for-1 anythings tonight?
;)
-
-The one thing that sort of "amazed" me about contacting the Fraud Department... There are a couple of choices - which button to push - to get to the department you need to get to. Out of the six options, the one that Consumers need to push is "6" - the last one on the menu. There is even an option for store clerks to call in, and that one comes before the one for the Customer/Consumer.
???
-
So... Now I'm taking a little breather. I did some cleaning here, and Nick came by also to pick up some more stuff. And I put on some classical music to help take the edge off. Breathe...
And the promised photo is where????
-And my car is fine.
:)
He was a little too hot and sweaty when he came over earlier, so...
...And he still has many boxes here, so... He'll be back.
DR vixmom - Congrats!
Ahhh....hence all the Aussie restaurants hereabout!
-
DR elmore - I'm so sorry to hear about your airline ticket troubles. If you do feel like trying one more time to rearrange the ticket and not get screwed financially in the process, I'd suggest going down to the ticket office at Lincoln Center - I think there's also one at Rockefeller Center - and dealing with the situation in person. -This is also the type of a situation where a Travel Agent - who are a dying breed - would come in handy.
*I've also found dealing with the Customer Service reps in the Frequent Flyer offices seems to net better results. I always call that number on my US Air card, and I've always gotten a real live person on the line immediately rather than the pre-recorded menu on their regular reservation line.
-
Mission accomplished! I suggest everyone boycott US Air, United Airlines flights to Ohio may cost more but I will never fly US Air again till the pigs that run it fly.
I'd rather walk than ride US Air!
-
Wow, Jose! That's scary about the cell phone!
A couple years ago, the pastor's cell phone was turned off by Alltell. They noted that phone calls from California and Arizona were placed minutes apart, so they knew the phone number was hijacked. They notified US. Then we had to go through the calls on the bill one by one to straighten it all out.
-
Ahhh....hence all the Aussie restaurants hereabout!
There's always Outback Steakhouse.
;)
-However, I do have to say that the cuisine of Australia - at least what I sampled while I was down there - was truly varied, and showed influences of many cultures.
-And I actually sort of like Vegemite too.
:P
-
Actually, it's worse! The assholes want to charge me an additional $100 for changing the reservation, making it $496! This is outrageous, and I will not pay it. I've spoken to the manager of the department and her attitude is screw you.
You know...I think you'd stand a great chance of flying standby...at around the exact time you want to go. All you do is show up and ask about flying that way.
Price should be much less, too, IIRC.
-
He was a little too hot and sweaty when he came over earlier, so...
;D
Sweaty is good!
-
Special thanks to RLP who helped me deliver the news!
Awww, shucks! 'T'weren't nuthin' atall.
-
Sweaty is good!
It cleans the pores of the skin...as well as areas of the body that might need some cleaning.
Of course, there's always the smell and bacteria...but GOOD!
-
Wow, Jose! That's scary about the cell phone!
They notified US. Then we had to go through the calls on the bill one by one to straighten it all out.
...And then when I asked if they could somehow block the phone number, I was informed that the only way I could that was to cancel that phone number/contract... And since I still had two months left on the Agreement, i was going to be charged $150 to do so. What?!??! -Well, we could just suspend the number. No charge. Much better.
And I was also a bit disgusted that they did not believe me when I told them that I've had the old phone in my possession during the whole billing period in question.
-Where is your old phone now? "In my left hand!"
-Are you sure no one has used it? "Yes. I haven't even had it turned on the past week and a half."
-Do you recognize this number? -"No."
-Are you sure you don't have friends or family in the Dominican Republic or in Norwalk, CT? "Yes, I am sure that I have no friends or family in either locale that I would call regularly at 1:52AM"
-Well, Sir, since the phone calls were made from your number, the best we can right now is reduce the charges by half...
I had to explain to the customer service rep that I believe there is a difference between a phone call be made from my phone versus one made from my phone number. -And that's also when I headed on down the store to deal with someone in person.
-
He was a little too hot and sweaty when he came over earlier, so...
;D
And this is a problem...why??
;)
-
Basta!
-
And this is a problem...why??
;)
Did I say it was a problem?
;D
-
Wow, Jose. What cell service do you use? Alltell canceled the number and assigned a new one.
-
DR elmore - One more possible suggestion/solution...
Since you do have a date that you know you want to fly out, and I'm guessing a time frame is not that big an issue... And I also don't think you're worrying about accumulating frequent flyer miles/point at this time...
I would try to see what kind of prices come up on those last-minute deals sites like Hotwire.com, etc...
If you get a good deal, then take it. You may not know the airline nor the time of day you're flying.
Then cancel your existing reservation on USAir - or United - I've lost track. Yes, you will be penalized anywhere from $75-100, but all the major airlines do that now. You may end up getting out of NYC and to Ohio for well under $496. And also sooner rather than later.
-
Well... My "AAAARRRGGHHH!!!!" that I posted earlier today was in response to a couple of things. -I can't share all the details, but... ;)
DR Jose, that means we can get together next week?
-
Oh - Priceline.com was the main site I was thinking of.
-
DR Jose, that means we can get together next week?
We'll see. I'll have a better idea after yet one more conference call tomorrow morning at 11:00.
-
You know...I think you'd stand a great chance of flying standby...at around the exact time you want to go. All you do is show up and ask about flying that way.
Price should be much less, too, IIRC.
DRs Ron and Jose, thanks for the advice. What I don't want to deal with now is changing the reservation from July 18-25 that I already made to another date. My original plan was to book several flights in the upcoming months and use them, knowing that one would need to be changed for the big emergency trip. Truth is, a last minute flight is cheaper than rebooking. A new ticket for next wednesday is $392, and with the $244 additional charges to reschedule and charge me for the $392 ticket, it's costing me $492 or whatever the hell it was!
-
Congratulations DR Vixmum.
MMM I wonder if there would have been less anxiety etc if DR Larry and Mr Flapapiano had dealt with each other's problems today. Soothing thoughts to the both of you.
-
Thank you DRs for the "feedback" re the OzDerek memorial. A Melba toast to you all and may your day be peachy. My niece's partner Xavier is the manager/vineculturist for the Melba Estate. My niece thus dwells on the beautiful Melba Estate.
Connections to Derek are everywhere I look.
Well, I had a fairly good day at work until late in the afternoon when things got very frustrating due to problem I've been complaining about for a year, but I can't get my boss to do anything about it. He's coming up tomorrow so I'm going to have to tell him this just will not do.
-
CONGRATS VIXMOM!!
-
I visited my client in the intensive care ward at the hospital today. He looks great for what he put himself through. He was in good spirits and very happy to see me. He has a trach tube and can't talk real well, but I let him know that I was very glad his attempt failed and that he needs to work on getting better and sticking around. My investigator visited him in the morning, so my guess is that's the most attention he's had from visitors since he got there. It was so good to see him grinning from ear to ear.
-
Congrats Vixmom... ONward and Upward!!
Actually, DR MBarnum, much as I hate to state it publicly, it's a nice photo!
DR JRand - it's not looking good for me to get over to Indiana either of those weekends. One is my Saturday to work and the other is a meeting that I have to attend in Columbus.
-
Can I frenzy us to page 8?
-
DR Jose - your cell phone situation is awful. Another new thing that I can now worry about!
-
DR Cillaliz - glad to hear your client visit went well.
DR MBarnum - isn't it fun to take nieces to the theatre? A few weeks before we were married, Richard and I took his nieces to The Nutcracker at Cincinnati's Music Hall. Before it was over, one was in my lap and the other was in Richard's. When the house lights came up, the lady sitting behind us complimented us on how well-behaved our children were. We just thanked her.
Do I see Jane? Welcome back!
-
It is official. After 14 years and one month I am leaving for a new place of employment.
I probably won't be here days anymore therefore I will have to make a greater effort to be here in the evenings!
Wow, that is a long time to be at one place and I can only imagine the feelings that you have about moving on. Congrats on the great new job, and I hope that the transition goes well!
-
HI JANE!!
-
Is that a shiney face or what????????
But it's a pretty face!! ;)
-
I visited my client in the intensive care ward at the hospital today. He looks great for what he put himself through. He was in good spirits and very happy to see me. He has a trach tube and can't talk real well, but I let him know that I was very glad his attempt failed and that he needs to work on getting better and sticking around. My investigator visited him in the morning, so my guess is that's the most attention he's had from visitors since he got there. It was so good to see him grinning from ear to ear.
I'm glad to hear your visit went well. I was thinking about you and your client today.
-
Michael, the pictures are great. Taylor is quite a beautiful little lady.
-
Elmore, I'm sorry to hear about your travel troubles. Making travel plans is always stressful even when it's for fun. In your case it would have been nice to have an agent with a degree of kindness or understanding.
-
Tomovoz-Thank you for sharing Maureen’s beautiful tribute to Derek.
DakotaCelt, nice avatar & a pleasant greeting on my return
Vixmom, congratulations on the too good to pass up offer! I hope you will be very happy there.
MBarnum-I loved the photos. :)
Here's the poster that my library's graphic artist designed for this year's Adult Summer Reading Program:
I'm glad to hear your visit went well. I was thinking about you and your client today.
Thanks TPunk and Ginny. I was hesitant about going - I hate hospitals - and I didn't stay long, but walked away knowing that I had done the right thing by visiting. His family has nothing to do with him. He was so happy to see me that when I walked in the nurse had to say "Calm down now" I told him we weren't going to talk about his case, that I was there as a friend to tell him I was worried about him and he calmed right down. We had as much as a conversation as you can have with someone not used to a trach tube. When I left he was waving and smiling. It really warmed my heart.
Hi Ginny, Cillaliz and All DR's. :D
-
MBarnum - GREAT PHOTOS
Ginny - I really like the poster...this isn't a criticism, but if I sat on a porch swing that way, I'd be on my butt on the floor in 2 seconds flat!
-
Thank you all for the kind words. I will be doing the same thing I do now, closing mortgage loans, and I will also be handling some private clients who are buying /selling.
Now that the stress of telling everyone is past I can finally start get excited about the wonderful new opportunity opening in front of me!
LOL, DR Cillaliz! I agree, she doesn't look very comfortable, but I'd sure like to have a porch swing and the time to sit in it and read.
-
Cillaliz-This must have been the reason you returned to work sooner than expected.
-
Elmore... this truly is reprehensible behavior on the part of US AIR. have you actually made the changes and committed to these higher fees or or you keeping the original flights and looking to fly last minute for next week?
Sometimes the airlines will reverse charges when you supply them proof of the emergency, I know when my Father in law had a stroke some years back and we had to fly out with no noitce we brought back a letter from the hospital and the airline refunded half of our fares
Yeah, I love porch swings, I don't have one either.
And here's the poster, designed by a local high school student for the Teen Summer Readin Club. That skyline is books, which I think is very clever.
-
Cillaliz-This must have been the reason you returned to work sooner than expected.
Could be, but I just didn't know it. My clients are definitely the reason I want to stay in my job. I realized today what some of the office problems are. I'm going to have a discussion with my boss tomorrow and see if one or two fairly big changes can be made. It would make a world of differnece. We'll see what happens.
Jose are you SURE you don"t have family in Norwalk CT? HMMMMMMMMMMMM? Maybe an uncle you completely forgot about that you called 87 times in the past two weeks?
Don't you love these stupid customer service questions? Like you are going to suddenly slap your forehead and say "Oh my yes ! I DID make all those calls! I remember now!"
~~~VIBES FOR A QUICK RESOLUTION !~~~

Welcome back Jane!! You have been missed! How went the family reunion?
-
Cillaliz I hope everything works out well work wise. I am glad your client visit went so well.

Noi, DRvixmom, no trip next week; I'll go on July 18 as originally planned.

Ginny you have some very talented library patrons there!
-
Must get a good night's sleep in order to be perky when I appear tomorrow before the Library's Board of Trustees. The director asked me to be there when he asks the Board to approve some modest financial support to a nonprofit capacity-building initiative I'm involved in. I'm a little nervous, but guess that's what's expected of Grade 12's.
'night.

Our trip was nice and I so enjoyed our time with Craig and Bryan. It was really hard to say goodbye to Craig. I wish he would move back to the U.S.A.!!!!!
First we met Craig in San Francisco. His girlfriend had been sick and completely missed the wedding, along with Craig’s toast to the bride and groom.
From San Francisco we drove to Santa Barbara, first stopping at to meet some Chocolate Labs (while we had a great time playing with the labs we do not have a new dog). We haven’t been in Santa Barbara in years, such a lovely town.
L.A. was short but sweet. Basically we just spent time with the boys, family & extended family. Of course Keith’s mother loved seeing them. We all enjoyed the hotel in Santa Monica, walks along the beach & shopping at the 3rd Street Promenade.
Disneyland was loads of fun. For the first time in years my neck was able to handle the rides & I loved every minute of them. Craig’s girlfriend doesn’t like roller coasters or anything that drops so Keith occasionally kept her company while the rest of us had fun.

Geez I would need a face lift and body transplant to appear perky these days!!
Grade 12 question... do you get a prom at the end of the year?
-
Jane where are pur photos? We must have photos!!
-
'night Ginny. Have a good meeting tomorrow.
Talented student.
-
Speaking of which... Uncle Mike thanls for sharing your trip with your cute as a button Taylor!!

Here is a question I should know the answer to...
Why is the director listed as Alan Smithee on the extended version of Dune? (One of Vixdad's Father's Day presents by request)
Wasn't it directed by David Lynch?
I think its because he was displeased with this version and is disassociating himself from it, but am I right?
-
Vixmom-I haven't seen the photos and I'm not sure when Keith will get to them. We have so much catching up to do before Bryan's visit on Thursday. He is coming with his new girlfriend.
-
Speaking of catching up-I have dirty dishes calling-'night.
-
I am back from Hot Feet. Oh, well. It was free.
It actually wasn't as bad as I heard and the dancing is good. The problem is the book. OMG, to be blunt, it sucks!!! And the people delivering the lines can't seem to make the dreadful stuff work.
The choreography is high energy, dynamic and very well executed. It's somewhat repetitive though and the music is
VERY
LOUD
Debbie Allen's daughter was out this evening so I saw the understudy. Perfectly accpetable performance.
The show is very colorful and it would be a rather fun Earth Wind and Fire disco/funk/rock concert if they were not trying to tell the story of The Red Shoes.
That's the report on Hot Feet.
-
Mission accomplished! I suggest everyone boycott US Air, United Airlines flights to Ohio may cost more but I will never fly US Air again till the pigs that run it fly.
They probably fly United. ;D
-
Every time I hear a Drew Casper commentary, I want to scream, "Use Polident, for crying out loud!"

Anthony's show (Beauty and the Beast in case you forgot ;)) was fun. It was a decent small regional theatre production. I'm not a big fan of B&TB. I think the animated film is much better than the stage show. The problem with the stage show is
IT'S TWO AND ONE HALF HOURS LONG!!!
That is WAY too long to tell a simple childrens story, IMHO. I think most of the music that was added for the stage just sits there. There are too many reprises and numbers go on too long. That being said, I did enjoy myself, even though I saw the show 3 times (Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon). I noticed different things each time. I also sat in different seats for each performance so I could look at different pieces and actors. One of the actors flubbed a line on Friday and he fixed it Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday the actor playing LeFou was laughing so hard in the Kill the Beast number (I don't know why) that he had to turn his back to the audience. His giggles spread and I could see one of the ensemble putting her head down on her partner's shoulder because she was laughing also.
All of Anthony's worries about playing Maurice were for naught. He came off very well and he was actually recognized on Friday as we were about town. They really like him at Mill Mountain and the cast is very fond of him. He doesn't think there is anything for him in the coming season but who knows. I think he can do Big River and Christmas Carol (although the CC is a new "environmental" production).
One cute thing happened after the Sunday matinee. I was in the lobby waiting for Anthony and overheard two older women going through their programs trying to match actor names and character names to the pictures posted in the lobby. The actor playing LeFou was a gymnast and he's still in very good shape so since LeFou is off stage for such a long time, in the Be Our Guest number he played the Flying Carpet. He was listed in the program as
LeFou/Carpet
B&TB takes place in France. They mention it in the song. As I heard the women talking they were pointing out actors and one said to the other...Oh, look here's the one who jumped around. He played LeFou CAR PAY (remember I told you the show takes place in France). Maybe you had to be there but I thought it was very funny.
We had a very nice time in Roanoke. I arrived in the morning. Anthony picked me up at the airport and we went back to his room. We had lunch and then went to the Roanoke Zoo. It's a small facility and well run. It's on the top of a mountain. We got to pet a Cebu. We saw a wolverine with a summer heat rash (according to his keeper). We got to see the monkeys get fed and we got to meet the new baby cougar. She's just nine months old and the man who raised her at the Columbus zoo was here to drop her off at the Roanoke zoo. The climate and physical space is much better (according to the keeper) at Roanoke than in Columbus. They would have to build some artificial place for the cougar in Columbus, but the top of a mountain is perfect for the Cougar.
We went to a couple of antique malls and Anthony found some old sheet music he doesn't have. I found two cute Christmas ornaments for our tree and we found a very funny/kitschy ad for a new kitchen from a magazine from the 1950s (it was mounted and only $1...a steal!).
The entire cast went out for Mexican food on Sunday after the matinee. It was lots of fun in spite of one of the cast members getting so drunk she was not able to stand (they have HUGE margaritas). She was taken home before the end of the evening. Ant and I played domestic after dinner. We went shopping for groceries! Non-perishable items only. Things are significantly cheaper in Roanoke so we went to Kroger and stocked up on things like boxed milk ($1.28 a carton there and almost $2.00 a carton in NYC) and paper towels and some canned goods and peanut butter and jelly and all sorts of other things. Ant has the car and he'll just bring everything back to the apartment when he returns. We still have to drag it up 3 flights of stairs but at least we don't have to walk it back from the grocery store.
There are pictures but they will have to wait until mid-July when the owner of the camera returns to the premises.
It's almost 11pm so I will leave you all for the evening.
See ya tomorrow!
-
Well past 11 here and I must to bed. Night all!!
-
Those pics came out wonderfully clear, DR MBarnum. Thanks for sharing them with us.
-
My friend Jeff's parents live in Roanoke, and he was there last weekend for Father's Day. How ironic!
-
Watched three things tonight. Started off with the gay-themed film I THINK I DO. I've seen it several times (though not lately), so it was nice to revisit it.
-
Next up was THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA. I had read the play in decades (since college), and I hadn't seen the film in probably 30 years either, so it was almost new to me. Better than I remembered it.
-
Good Evening!
Aahh... Nothing like spending the evening with some friends, ordering Chinese food delivery, and some trashy TV ("Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency") to help one unwind from a crappy day... Aaahhh...
:)
-
Finished up the evening with tonight's new episode of RESCUE ME. Hilarious in several scenes and poignant in others. A very entertaining show.
-
DR MBarnum - Thanks for the pics! Taylor is certainly a beautiful girl.
-And her father and her uncle ain't bad either. ;)
-
Off to bed now.
Good night!
-
Sorry for being E&T. I've got to catch up, but just wanted to relate that, while on line buying train tickets for my Friday-to-Sunday D.C. trip, something became clear to the steadily increasing line waiting to purchase: that the tellers were generally amused by the notion that so few of them were on duty to sell tickets while there were so many buyers. Obviously it's not their fault that they're understaffed, and they have to be there for hours on end, but the long line and low staff actually seemed to put the tellers in a good mood.
And that's the report from NY Penn Station earlier this evening. One thing about standing in a long line, it's nice when it's over.
-
Congrats, vixmom! (I guess I'll find out why I'm congratulating you when I catch up.) :)
-
Nice to see you back DR Jane!!
Good meeting vibes to DR Ginny!
-
Back from a fascinating evening at the DGA, about which more later.

So, Jose...did you have "Chinese Food in Bed"? ;) (a BK reference)

What is the environmental production of Christmas Carol???
-
Tiny Tim's crutches are no longer made from "old forest" timber and the Turkey is Tofu. The cast may only be recyled Actors from past productions and the ghosts may not exude ectoplasm.
Christmas as such is not given a mention.

For those who've read the Kritzer books (and who hasn't?), you know that Benjamin was fascinated by Fizzies. Well, they're back!
http://www.oldtimecandy.com/fizzies.htm
And be sure to nose around the site, as they have an amazing assortment of candy from the 50s and 60s, including my fave, Chocolate Babies.
