Title: INTENTIONS GONE AWRY
Post by: bk on August 26, 2006, 12:41:01 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes have gone awry like the intentions, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've gone awry, too.

Early Saturday greetings!  It's a workday for me and I'll be teaching a workshop first thing this morning.

Didn't want to wait until early afternoon to say:

Happiest of birthdays to DR JRand - sorry Mockingbird is such a trial (pun intended!)

Happiest of birthdays to DR Jose - glad to hear that you'll be in NYC the first week of October!

Very happy birthday to (in alphabetical order, by HHW name) Jose and JRand!

I guess if I used their real names, the alphabetical order might not be the same, though, but still...

I am on my way to work for the next 10 hours or so, but hopefully I will be able to check in.

Thanks for the Birthday wishes from yesterday.

AND of course Happiest of the Same Birthday to DRJOSE....  Mamma Mia...he is much younger!

Good morning, all!

Yep, MONK started its downhill slide for me earlier this season, and I believe the personnel involved are trying so hard to make his phobias humorous that they're taking an interesting character too far from the realities of the parameters established from the beginning for him.  I hope last night's dreadful episode is a nail in theshow's coffin.

I finished last night THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY.  The book is both an interesting social history of Chicago and the creation of the 1893 Chicago Exposition and the demented serial killer H H Holmes, whose number of criminal acts against human beings never will be fully documented.  Holmes took advantage of the Exposition to build a block-long hotel from which many visitors to the Exposition may never have checked out.

Holmes' crimes influenced a serial killer in 1997, Dr Michael Swango, and I suspect this is the source for the frightening 19th Century serial killer in the past season of MEDIUM.  The writers of the show may have read the book as well.  I loved it, but Holmes is such an unsettling character that I went to bed afraid of the dark.

TOD:
  Color:  CINDERELLA (Disney), 1950
3-D: some Western whose title I've forgotten
Cinerama: SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD (1956)
  Cinemascope:  LADY AND THE TRAMP(?)

I can't really comment on the TOD.  My parents didn't take us to see movies much, and when they did they tended to take us to drive-ins.  Stereo sound coming from a drive-in speaker... sheesh!

A-Lion Kinging we will go!

Yep, it's about time to get cleaned up, so we can get to Magic Mommy's house on time to gather the family together and head on to Philly.

Exactly how this adventure will take place, that is still uncertain.  But there's a chance der Brucer will be joining me in my mutiny against the tyrrany of his daughter!  Apparently, Alex has finished all the levels of his Pokemon game... but there are other, more advanced Pokemon games to be had.  Der Grampa is seriously contemplating getting Alex one of said more advanced games, in spite of Magic Mommy's hatred of same.  Heck, he remembers what it was like to be an obcessive nine-year-old boy.  I remember what it was like.  Magic Mommy is the one who doesn't remember.

Life is a bitch.  It's time to bitch back.

Good Morning!

Well, I'm thinking I have a good eight hours of note entry and proofing work to get done, and then it's just a matter of marking the cuts in the music for the songs that weren't transposed...  And then I have to put the books together...  And then...

Hopefully, 80-90% of that work will be done by tomorrow night so that I won't have to look at any part on Monday - I can finish the rest of detail work Tuesday during the day before the first orchestra read that night.  -However, I suspect that I will be working on some of the charts on Monday anyway - it will give me something to do.  However, I've also decided to go ahead and head down to Richmond Monday for the day.  I really would love to up to NYC for the day, but with an early rehearsal on Tuesday - and Tuesday will also be a LONG day - 10:00am-11:00pm... So...  -I've also been called in to play some of the rehearsals the past couple of days, so I "lost" some of my own Finale time.  Which is OK - it's been nice to be playing a keyboard rather than typing at one.

In any case...  I'm hoping that this "way too busy dear reader" will not be so busy after Tuesday night.

Also on a somewhat disappointing note, I was greatly anticipating the forthcoming telecast of THE YELLOW ROLLS ROYCE on TCM (this Tuesday for anyone interested).

It's a Panavision movie, but the last time TCM showed it, the image shrank to full screen as soon as the credits were done. A frustrated e-mail quickly followed from me to TCM chiding them for showing the film pan and scanned instead of in its original widescreen aspect ratio (which they usually do and are quite proud to hawk that fact). The answer from them was that the distributor from whom they lease the film had only a full frame version available but that they would attempt to rectify the situation the next time the film was shown.

Knowing that a letterboxed laserdisc was issued with the entire Panavision image intact, I informed them that somewhere there did exist a widescreen print of this movie.

My cable guide for this week's telecast has no mention of it being letterboxed, so I'm afraid we're going to be stuck once again with a full frame presentation.  Boo!  :(

Topic of the Day:

First CInemascope had to have been LADY AND THE TRAMP

First color film is also the first film I can ever remember sitting through though much of it didn't make much sense to me: JOHNNY GUITAR.

First Vistavision film was the Martin & Lewis film PARDNERS.

First roadshow was CINERAMA HOLIDAY.

First 3-D wasn't in that wave of 3-Ds in 1953-54. I was too young. So, the answer is COMIN' AT YA!

I got to see many of the famous 3-D films of the 1950s during that second renaissance of 3-D in the early 1980s. (Theaters would run them at double feature matinees.)

Sad to say, KISS ME KATE, the one 3-D I'd really love to see, I've never been able to see. But I did get to see HOUSE OF WAX and BWANA DEVIL and DIAL'M' FOR MURDER and GORILLA AT LARGE and CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY(S), JRAND & JOSE.

BK, why in heaven's name are you telling Blanche about color transfers in DVDs?  Dogs are color-blind!  ;)

Also, BK, how literal is your "handful of performances" statement in the Trivia Contest?   You usually always mean exactly what you state in those contests, but I'll be danged if I can find anything that fits so far.

However, in my early morning research into the contest, I keep running across two names (this always seems to happen)--today the names are Ira Levin and Maurice Jarre.  Isn't that peculiar?  Perhaps Jarre (or even his son) can do the incidental music for Rosemary's Baby:  A Mexican Ballet.

A late summer HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to JRand and Jose!!! Hope it is a wonderful day for you lads!

My yesterday was spent blueberry picking and then yard hacking. The salmon berry bushes must DIE! And two years' worth of dead monster ferns. OUT! I say! I'm a little sore today, but intend to get back out there again. The piano tuner is coming at 11 - so I can use that hour or two to rip the hapless offenders out. Burn pile is huge - and no rain in sight... may have to let it sit right where it is until next spring, before I can burn. So be it! meanwhile, a little WD-40 on the old slashers, and I'm good to go.

Laters, gators!

It's a lovely day here. Last night the cats insisted on fighting when I wanted to go to bed.  It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so loud about it. Anyway, I finally got them calmed down and got to sleep at about 2:00AM. Whe they started at it at about 6:45 AM, I shooed them out of the bedroom shut the door and slept until 10:00 AM!!! Happy B'days to JRand and Jose!!!

First color picture I think I ever saw was Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.  I can't remember any of the others because I never noticed this stuff when I was a kid.  I went for the stories, not the technical stuff.  I think one of the Gone With The Wind revivals was the first time I ever saw a motion picture that had an intermission.  I don't think I ever saw a 3-d movie in the theatre.

I slept right up until the knocking on the door of she of the Evil Eye.  Pretty day outside.

I who have a wonderful memory for ephemera cannot remember the first color film I saw.  I do think the first Cinemascope film would have been The Tender Trap or The High and the Mighty, whichever came out first - and either way it would have been at the Village Theater.  It seems like it would have been The Tender Trap - maybe someone can verify the dates.  First roadshow - hmmm.  Maybe Ben-Hur, maybe a reissue of Seven Wonders Of The World in Cinerama.  First 3D would have been the first year of Disneyland - they showed something in their Main Street movie theater.

Someone recently suggested that instead of just putting my computer to sleep at night, that I actually shut it down - that even when it's in "sleep" mode it's somehow still at work.  So, since I've been doing that it does seem like I have less Internet problems, especially with AOL.  It wasn't suggested I needed to shut it down every night, but every other night or so.

Today is here, and today is the day I see "A Chorus Line."

Funny story...not.  I received an online reminder from Ticketmaster that my booked performance was coming up.  And then it reminded me that I was seeing today's 8 p.m. show.

"What?  This can't BE!" I exclaimed.  "I booked the matinee", I protested.

I checked my ticket I've had for a month...and there it was!  8 p.m. performance.

I know I'm aging...but I've done my damnedest to do it gracefully...and with care.  But the only thing i can imagine is that I must have failed, while seeking a good seat, to re-check that I was still booking "matinee".  And of course...best intentions, etc.

I've been worrying myself sick all week about what to do.  I don't worry at all about San Francisco, but the return trip, via BART (the subway here) late at night...with the several blocks walk in downtown Oakland (never a safe place since there's little commercial night life and FORGET ABOUT police presence) to get my car had me seriously considering being a no-show at the theater.  I could park my car in the unpatrolled BART parking lot of the station in the city, but would it be there when I got back.  And how long, I wondered, would it take me to get a BART train after 11 p.m. to return me to this particular station?

No....it just wasn't something I wanted to do.

So...I've booked myself a hotel one block from the theater.  I'll check in after 2 p.m. and I have the room until noon tomorrow.  The hotel is also two -- well-lighted, theater-district -- blocks from the theater where "A Chorus Line" is playing.

It's an adventure...a treat...and I'm thoroughly relieved to have made the decision.  I want to see the show very much.

I may not have gotten to the things that most-needed doing yesterday...but I managed to thoroughly clean my kitchen and bathroom floors, and I did some major dusting/polishing of furniture, and I threw a bunch of stuff out and reorganized another bunch.

I'm not thoroughly disgusted with myself for having wasted the day, and I'm pleased to say I didn't watch a single movie on DVD....having been distracted by a few things airing on TV!

The talk about first color movie....I have no memory of what movie was the first I ever saw in a theater, hence whether it was b/w or color is a bit moot.

I do, however, have memories of the first three movies I remember seeing in a theater:  "Anastasia" (1956), "The Ten Commandments" (1956) and "War and Peace" (1956).  All were in color.  And I was 7 years old.  (the first film was my first memory of CinemaScope and the latter two were both VistaVision.  My first roadshow for which I reserved a ticket/seat in advance was "The Sound of Music" in 1965).

My mother has told me she used to take me with her to the movies all the time when I was a baby...and I know I went to the movies in the small town where we lived prior to my reaching age 7, but I don't remember what the movies were.

We had a TV back in those olden days, and black-and-white was the norm.  I don't believe I ever questioned it, although I used to wonder what some of the programs would be like in color...especially in those years of the early 1960s.  It was 1966 when my father bought a color TV.  I had seen color TV as early as 1964 when my grandfather bought one.

We would go to my grandfather's for Sunday dinner and then watch "Bonanza."

What I really wanted was to see was the NBC peacock and the opening to the Walt Disney TV show...it always looked as if it would be spectacular in color...and I remember seeing color images in magazines of what they looked like...and the real thing was as wonderful as I'd imagined.

I've never had a problem with b/w vs. color.  I guess there was a time when I wondered why studios made decisions to film in b/w rather than color, but then I'd research and find some comment about WWII austerity, etc.  It always made sense to me...at that time and for that time.  Today, in retrospect, it seems insane that MGM didn't film "Ziegfeld Girl" in color...or that Fox didn't film "Prince of Foxes" in color.  But..what's done is done.

I had a young friend in Naples, Italy, during my tour there 1987-92, who came to my house one Saturday wanting to watch some movies on VHS.  He named one he wanted to see, and I had it.  So, we watched.  And then I took a turn and put on "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane."

He nearly freaked. "I don't watch black-and-white" movies, he stated.  "They're not realistic."

I reminded him that they were MOVIES and that the movie he had chosen was no more realistic because it was in color than if it had been in b/w.  I implored him to give this movie a chance.

He grudgingly -- and very silently -- watched the movie through to its conclusion.

Afterward, he said, "That was GREAT!  I got so involved in the story that I forgot it wasn't in color!"

And THAT's what it's all about.  Sometimes, the lack of color forces you to think and give it emotional color on your own!

I do not know what my first film at a theater was, but more then likely it was Disney and in color. I have never had the pleasure of a roadshow.

First 3-D would have been either the re-release of HOUSE OF WAX in the 1980s or the showing on CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON on tv when they had that special 3-D showing....had to get your glasses from 7-11 or something like that.

I have no idea what the first movie was that I saw in color.  It seems like the rule-of-thumb when I was growing up was black & white on television; color at the theater.  I do remember in elementary school, all of us who were patrol boys at the crosswalks (sorry that is what they called them, not me) got to go down to the Roxy Theater downtown on a Saturday to see a free showing of a movie, plus drawings for przes, etc.  I remember clearly that the movie was THE SOLID-GOLD CADILAC with Judy Holiday and Paul Douglas.  I was horrified!  The movie was in b&w, and somehow, to me; it seemed that getting to see the movie for free was less of a prize, because it was b&w.

There's a showing at 5 of THE ILLUSIONIST and I'm thinking about going; the theatre's literally one block from my apartment and I had meant to go last weekend.

So far, it's been a good day:  a brief sojourn at Toyland and then the wonderful New York Public Library Theatre Collection:  I looked at Robinson Locke scrapbooks for Bessie Wynn, one of the stars of BABES IN TOYLAND, and for Helen Falconer, who replaced Elsie Janis as Cinderella in THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER.  Robinson Locke was the editor of one of the Toledo newspapers who was a huge theatre fanatic; he left the library a great number of scrapbooks from the end of the 19th Century through the early part of the 20th Century.

Then my favorite theatre librarian Jeremy Megraw asked me to look at a photo and verify it was from 1903 BABES IN TOYLAND and not the 1902 WIZARD OF OZ, which was what was written on its back.   It was indeed from BABES, the 12 widows in Act Three who performed "The Moon Will Help You Out" with Bo-Peep.  I have to go in on Tuesday, pull ouyt one of the scrapbooks on BABES and identify the actresses for him.

So, maybe it's time for a snack before the movie?

Back from travels.  I actually went to Panera, which is basically a place where people sit and play with their computers.  I got a Diet Coke and sat and proofed the formatted book - got about thirty more pages done, so that the rest won't take all day today and I can watch a few DVDs and relax.

Well, that was another part of it, too!  I remembered someone had said they had tix, and I just couldn't figure how I could come on here NOT having seen the show because of a few logistics issues I had.

Sometimes, you have to move MOUNTAINS for the sake of a Broadway(-bound) show!

jhvw and I have tickets, too, the night after DR Ginny and DH Richard.  I think it's great you booked a room. Much less stress than worrying about getting home

Hi All and One and One and All!

I awakened (awoke?) from a dream this morning.

I was in a receiving line at a farewell party for Leonard Bernstein. He was retiring from composing and conducting. When I got up to him, I cupped my hands around his face and said, "Thank you for all your inspiration." (oy, the English). The next thing I knew I was sitting at the feet of Mr. Bernstein who had retreated to a monastery! We seemed to be communicating telepathically. Then he opened his arms and said, "I'm just not any good!" That's when I woke up (awakened?)!

I wonder what it all means....

First 3D would have been the first year of Disneyland - they showed something in their Main Street movie theater.

Almost correct!! :o

The program(me) was called 3D JAMBOREE, Working For Peanuts was part of it (Chip & Dale and Donald) and was shown at the original Fantasyland Theater. 8) ;)

Of course today we are very busy at the World of Wisdom....but that's OKAY!!

Big storms predicted for tonight.

FIRST 3D movie was HOUSE OF WAX sometime in the 1970's in rerelease mode.

First color.....probably KIM which we saw on a school field trip....although maybe a cartoon before that.

First Road Show - THIS IS CINERAMA!, lots of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, ICE STATION ZEBRA, GRAND PRIX

CAMELOT I think was roadshow....and one of the GONE WITH THE WIND releases in the 1960's....

I remember when they used to advertise a movie "now at popular prices!"

Yes, I remember that "Now at Popular Prices!" too. Trouble was, sometimes, the movies were cut so they could fit more showings of the film at those popular prices. Great films like LAWRENCE OF ARABIA got cut for the sake of more showings.

Are there any producer types lurking here who are based in the Portland, Oregon/Vancouver, Washington area or any producers elsewhere who are looking for an economical show where the whole cast has gotten phenomenal reviews?

The one-man show HERRINGBONE, which Skip wrote with Tom Cone and Ellen Fitzhugh, continues to get great attention in the city of Vancoiuver, WA - but it ends Sept. 1 and this is the last chance to see it - at this point, anyway.

This just came out from the Portland Mercury.  I assume this is a newspaper rather than just a website.  Anyone know?

HERRINGBONE
Review by Alison Hallett

I'd never heard of actor Taylor Askman before the Vancouver Arts Equity's production of Herringbone, but as I took my seat in the funky Main Street Theatre in downtown Vancouver, a drunken woman sitting in front of me assured me that the 22-year-old is "extremely talented." My first thought? He'd better be. Herringbone is a one-man show, which means that if that one man can't swing it, the audience is in for a long, painful night. Fortunately, Askman can swing it. Damn, can he swing it.

The shockingly talented Askman plays Herringbone's titular character, a tall, self-possessed vaudevillian with curly orange hair and a ratty (what else) herringbone suit. Herringbone is the host of this show, as well as the sole performer. His first number is the song "One of Those Years," as in, "Have you ever had 'one of those years?'" Herringbone has, and this play is about that year.

Before he was called Herringbone, he was called George. During the year in question, George is a precocious eight-year-old living in the Depression-era South. His family is dirt poor, and when George wins a speech competition, his parents use the money to enroll him in dance classes: They've heard that "child stars" can make good money in Los Angeles, and they're hoping that George might be their ticket out of poverty.

George takes dances lessons from a man called Chicken, formerly of the famed vaudeville act Chicken and Turtle. Lou, Chicken's former partner, is dead; while studying with Chicken, George becomes possessed by Lou's ghost, who seizes control of George's body and forces him to strangle Chicken. George's parents hit the road, fleeing the crime scene with the Lou-possessed George in tow.

The family makes their way to Hollywood, paying their way with money Lou makes performing in bars (in George's body, of course). Through it all, Lou and George share George's body in an awkward tug of war. While in Hollywood, Lou forces George to run away from his parents—an abrupt introduction to manhood.

George and Lou vie for possession of George's body, a struggle that comes to a disturbing head when Lou invites a woman back to their room and tries to seduce her. George is horrified (and the scene is horrifying), forcing the conflict between Lou and George to a climactic end.

This elaborate story is reenacted entirely by Herringbone: Herringbone is George, all grown up and in full mastery of his inner demons. As Herringbone tells his story, he moves seamlessly from one character to the next: from George's wide eyes and high-pitched stutter, to George's mother's lazy Southern drawl, to Lou's hoarse, raspy bark.

Whether you take this show at face value, as a tale of ghostly possession, or read it as a coming-of-age parable with Oedipal implications, there's no doubt that in the wrong hands Herringbone could be an unmitigated disaster: The script, simply, is a bitch. It's demanding, hectic, and thematically abstruse. There's no room for error; if even one character is anything less than distinct, narrative coherence would quickly vanish.

And as if multiple characters weren't enough to contend with, there's the song-and-dance angle as well. Lyricist Ellen Fitzhugh has penned a few gems, like "What's a Body to Do (with a Body)?" after Chicken is murdered, and pianist K.J. McElrath keeps admirable pace with the demands of Skip Kennon's score. Some of the songs involve two or three characters, requiring Askman to rifle through his repertoire of characters with dizzying speed.

Askman, though, endows each char-acter with enough specific mannerisms that they are each easy to identify and distinguish from one another, but he never veers into caricature: Each character remains human, even the fiendish Lou. It's almost unsettling, how good he is; at times Askman, like George, seems possessed. He keeps it up even during the musical numbers: As with everything else he attempts during this production, Askman makes singing duets with himself seem easy.

Therein lines the real marvel of this show: Askman's ability to keep so many plates spinning at once. His curly red hair and smooth, clammy make-up invite comparisons to a clown, and like any good clown, he is a mimic, a cipher. His identity shifts and dissolves behind his enigmatic grease-painted face; Askman looks like Gene Wilder and sounds like Tim Curry, but the sum of his talents is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive performances I've seen.

Was WEST SIDE STORY a road show engagement?  I think it was first released that way.  I saw it complete with overture and epilogue.  After that probably BEN-HUR (still one of my favorite films)

I remember the first time I saw BEN-HUR.  When it got to the part where Messala was forced to free Judah's mother and sister, and they opened the dungeon door; I thought they said, "Leopards!"  I couldn't quite figure out how the leopards got into the cell to eat his mother and sister!

I went to the store and bought a warm delight....doesn't that sound decadent?? Well it's a microwave brownie mix. A hot fudgy brownie in less than a minute. All you add is water.   They are actually good, and the portion size is small, so I can have a wonderful taste of warm chocolate with vanilla ice cream melting on the top without having to eat a whole batch of brownies.....mmmmm,  I bought an extra mix just in case there is another birthday tomorrow..

Now, I'm puzzled by the use of "decaden" on this board!
To me, as in French, "decadent" has always ment:

A   noun
   1    decadent
a person who has fallen into a decadent state (morally or artistically)

B   adjective
      decadent, effete
marked by excessive self-indulgence and moral decay; "a decadent life of excessive money and no sense of responsibility"; "a group of effete self-professed intellectuals"

When has the meaning changed AND what does it really mean nowadays in the US of A!

I'm intrigued!

I guess you get more "io" in English than "oi"; in French we have lots of "oi" spellings!

That's how I meant it. I wasn't relating decadence to a brownie, but some people might.  I was simply saying picking up a warm delight, sounds like it's something other than a brownie.....

Pajamas, hey?!

(We won't tell!) ;)

It's really not that exciting....our jazz band was staying at the same motel that he and his band were staying.  In the morning he stepped out of his room into the parking lot where we were talking to the guys in the band.  He had on his pajamas.  He asked them about when they were going to leave, I asked for his autograph. He was very nice about it.  Just saying he was in his pajamas sounds a lot racier, though.  ;D

Language changes - decadence has gone the way of sophistication and Ironic.

The one that still I find "difficult" to accept is when "lend" is so often used as its opposite  -"borrow".

Good Evening!

Well... I'm now at my parents house so that I could finally see my mother.  In the three weeks that I've been in town, we just haven't crossed paths.  I've seen everyone else - my father, my brothers, my nieces and nephew.  When she called me this morning to wish me Happy Birthday, she asked if I was coming over to the house tonight...  And since I really hadn't planned anything... So... Of course, guess who's not here right now?

I've just come back from seeing THE ILLUSIONIST.  No pun intended, I found the film about a magician, or illusionist, both magical and beautiful.  The evocation of late 19th Century Vienna is lovely, the screenplay is intelligent with some good twists, and the cast is wonderful.  Paul Giamatti is such a delight, and I've believed Edward Norton could do almost anything since his first film.  I even liked the score by Phillip Glass and I usually loathe his music.  I thought it fit the film's time frame and mood, and it wasn't a constant wash of music. Like a romance? Like a mystery? Like magic?  See the film.

I have no expectations.  Call me Fosca.

Why are we actually visiting New York? It will be our third visit. We are there to meet Kimlets and/or Hainsies.  Ben? Buddy?

The Portland Mercury
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Portland Mercury is an "alternative weekly" newspaper published in Portland, Oregon. It chronicles the ever-changing details of Portland's music scene, including interviews, commentaries, reviews, and concert dates, and also features the popular "I, anonymous" section, in which local readers can write in with their rants and raves about the people and things that piss them off the most. The articles have been notorious for being biased and opinionated, which has led to critics labelling the staff of The Mercury as elitists. It is similar in style to its sibling publication, Seattle, Washington's The Stranger.

Anthony, in spite of his mild cold, will be seeing a dance presentation tomorrow. A friend of his has choreographed a piece and wants Anthony to see it. I shall stay at home and relax. If it's a decent afternoon I may go out for a brisk walk but otherwise I have no plans.

Then on Wednesday Anthony will head out to Long Island for the Labor Day weekend (it's early I know). I will join him on Friday afternoon. We have a half-day at the office so I will arrive in Centereach around 1:30pm.

Fosca and Magnus have already organised new tenants for a "short rental opportunity" in Sept/October.  We know who owns and runs this household.

This shore is a punny place.

Thanks so much to everyone for the lovely felicitations on my natal day.   They were the loveliest I received....well they were the ONLY ones I received, but it doesn't make them any LESS lovely.

Molly did call from Seattle...so that was very nice.

Watching STRAY DOG and as MR BK said a few weeks ago, Mr Mifune is indeed I N T E N S E in this movie....but he wears TOO MANY CLOTHES.

And just in case there really are any producer types lurking here :) I'm re-posting the review from the Oregonian for the same show.

Theater review One-man cast carries dark, funny 'Bone'

Monday, July 24, 2006

HOLLY JOHNSON
The Oregonian

Do vaudeville and the dark arts seem likely bedfellows?

They get along just fine in "Herringbone," a terrifying yet mesmerizing play by Tom Cone from the 1970s (later revised into a two-act musical).

It starts with an unsuspecting 8-year-old named George bound for Hollywood during the Depression, who takes stage lessons, finds he's pretty good at tap-dancing, and is suddenly inhabited by the spirit of a louche 35-year-old vaudevillian dwarf. He's so creepy, it's easy to see why his former show-biz partner knocked him off.

Horrific, mesmerizing and funny, the play once featured Joel Grey in an East Coast performance, and artistic director Llewellyn J. Rhoe of Arts Equity Inc. in Vancouver offers a riveting production, with new songs by composer Skip Kennon and lyricist Ellen Fitzbugh.

Taylor Askman, 22, who plays all the roles in this intimate yet hugely complex show, displays an amazing quicksilver talent as he serves up a cadre of characters. He possesses a face actors long for: a combination of cartoon character and classical statue. But it's his ability to sketch characters with depth and mercurial speed that stands out.

One minute he's Louise, George's arch, ambitious Southern mom; the next he's young George, with a tinyvoice and bemused stare. The contrast is stark next to the gnarled, gravelly voiced dwarf Lou, who materializes unannounced. And then there's George's imperious, looming dad, Dot the giggly seductress, and adult George, the grave narrator. The characters seem to materialize from a sideshow in Askman's brain. He's a big talent, and Rhoe has obviously found a vehicle that gives him a big tent in which to move around.

The play is a brutal coming-of-age story with a nod to Kafka or Stephen King, and the musical numbers mesh perfectly. Musical accompaniment by musical director Kevin McElrath on piano is a pleasure to hear. The gaping set, a textured affair in black and red surfaces designed by Rhoe, echoes the maw of hell itself.

Continues at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays through Sept. 1 at Main Street Theatre, 606 Main St.

In honor of Tab Hunter, the mellow sounds of Lionel Ritchie (and I guess, Shirley Bassey)

STILL
(Lionel Ritchie)

Lionel Ritchie

Also recorded by:
Shirley Bassey; Curtis Brengle; Ricardo Caliente; Freddy Cole;
The Commodores; Laura Fygi; Engelbert Humperdinck; Millie Jackson;
Kenny Lattimore; The Mantovani Orch.; Symphonic Rock Project;
Zim Zemarel & His Orch.

Lady, morning's just a moment away
And I'm without you once again
You laughed at me
You said you never needed me
I wonder if you need me now

[Chorus:]
So many dreams that flew away
So many words we didn't say
Two people lost in a storm
Where did we go?
Where'd we go?

We lost what we both had found
You know we let each other down
But then most of all
I do love you
Still!

[Chorus]

We played the games that people play
We made our mistakes along the way
Somehow I know deep in my heart
You needed me
'cause I needed you so desperatly!
We were too blind to see
But then most of all
I do love you
Still!

Still) though you broke my heart
(Still) though we're far apart
I love you still
(Still) after all this time
(Still) you're still on my mind
I love you still

I've lost count of the hours
and I've lost track of the days
In fact, I've lost just about everything
Since you went away
Everything, that is, except the memories you left me
And that's one thing that no one can mar

I don't know who you're with
I don't even know where you've gone
My only hope is that some day you might hear this song
And you'll know that I wrote it especially for you
And I love you, wherever you are

(Still) after all this time
(Still) you're still on my mind
I love you still

This flame in my heart is like an eternal fire
For every day it burns hotter
And every day it burns higher
And I haven't been able to put out one little flicker
Not even with all of these tears

My friends think I'm crazy and maybe I am
But I'll carry this torch just as long as I can
for some day, you might just decide to come home
and I want you to know
I'm still here

(Still) though you broke my heart
(Still) though we're far apart
I love you still

Der Brucer and I would love to see Matthew Bourne's production of Norman Scissorhands.  That's the ballet about the guy who has scissors for hands, and becomes famous for creating hairstyles, along with a bris or two on the side.

Ooohh...just finished watching a scary monster movie on DVD...THEM! ....giant ants creeping around the New Mexico desert...I haven't seen this film since I was just a tiny tike...although the giant ants are not terribly convincing the movie still managed to give me the creeps, caused lots of goose pimples, and kept me very entertained! Better then your average 1950s sci-fi I guess.

First color film and in stereo was Marry Poppins

First Roadshow, and 70 mm TODAO The Sound of Music

I believe Cinemascope, VistaVison were passe by that time, unless when the rereleased The Ten Commandments to the theaters in the 60's it was shown in VistaVision

I believe only one or two films were ever actually projected in true 8perf horizontal VistaVision - Strategic Air Command and maybe White Christmas.  All others were printed down to 35mm.

Just finished one DVD and shall now start another.

So I guess VistaVision was like Cinemascope 55. It was used once or twice and then printed down to 35mm

I'm on much later than usual. Best friend John came over and we went on a walk down memory lane going back through some old show tapes and awards night productions where we were part of the entertainment. Lots of laughs and fond, fond memories.

The last tape was of a 1996 awards night production, and I was shocked at how young I looked. How I've aged in ten years! Yikes!

Next was Mae West's SHE DONE HIM WRONG. The telecast was fine though the 1932 film has definite scratches, dirt, and debris on the print shown on TCM. Still, it has decent focus and contrast, and I enjoyed seeing it again.

I finshed up with NIGHT AND THE CITY, not the brilliant original but Irving Winkler's mediocre remake. I hadn't seen it since reviewing it when it first came out, and I wanted to see if time improved the film or at least my estimation of it. It didn't. Winkler lets De Niro "put on a show," but the result is overbaked ham. He doesn't seem to be in the same movie as the other actors, and the pacing is lethargic.

My Bollywood movie of the weekend seems to be a rather serious drama taking place after the 1947 partition titled MITTER PYARE NU HAAL MUREEDAN DA KEHNA....in the Punjab section of India, when Muslims began killing innocen Hindu and Sikh villagers and then Sikhs would turn around and try to get revenge by killing innocent Muslim villagers...with friends killing friends...this movie is about a Muslim man who saves a Sikh family from slaughter while in another village a Sikh rallies the other Sikhs and Hindus to protect the Muslim's in their village from being hurt.

And of course this being Bollywood it has music and dancing amongst the slaughter.

...but it is a really good movie!

Good Evening!

Just how much cake can one have on one's birthday?....

I ended up spending the evening at my brother Don's new house.  Well, it was new to me - he moved in two years ago(!) and this was my first time heading over there.  -How the heck did that happen?!?!  In any case...  My brother Mike was over there with his family which meant I had all my nieces and nephew in attendance.  They ended up throwing me a "surprise" birthday party.  Of course, before the "surprise", John Michael made sure to warn me not to pay attention to what they were doing, and not to come upstairs until I was told.  And I did as I was told.

When I was finally led upstairs, John Michael, Alyssa and Alexandra all jumped out and "Surprised!" me.  They made me some cards, a "Happy Bithday[sic] U. Jojo" banner in crayon, and they also had some ballons too - drawn in Crayola on some newsprint and taped to the bunkbeds.  It really was a great surprise.  They even had a goody bag for me which consisted of a recycled McDonald's Happy Meal box filled with various things from Alexandra's room.  "...This is for you, Uncle Jojo, but you can't keep them."  ;) :)

Then we had cake and ice cream.  Chocolate cake with chocolate icing and vanilla ice cream.  Oh - and the appetizers consisted of Slurpees and Taquitos from 7-11.

I really had a wonderful time.  Best of all, I got to spend some more time with my newest niece, Emily.  She really is such a good baby.  And she's been very "easy" for my brother and his wife to take care of since she tends to go to bed around 11:00, and sleeps through the night until 8:00.

-OH!  And my brother, Don, slipped me $40 as I was leaving as my birthday gift.  ;D

Alas, I did not see my mother tonight (again).  I even headed back to their house after leaving my brother's place, but my parents were still out.  However, I did go ahead and load up some boxes from the basement into my car, and I've brought them over to my temp apartment.  -I plan to have an ongoing project once the show begins since I'll have plenty of free time on my hands - Operation De-Clutter!

And now...  Well, I actually think I'm going to go ahead and finish the last two guitar charts I have to get done before heading to bed.  -This way, all I have left is finessing the accordion part.  -Almost there.

Laters...
