Well, you've read the notes, the notes hardly knew ye, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they hardly knew ye so they don't really want to come home right now.

End of the summer means End of the summer vacation and End of the summer vacation means...HOMEWORK.  I had to do a lot of my homework to the deadline, that's one of my birthday memories when I was child, and for some reason, I recall it every on my birthday.   :)

Good morning, all!

DR Hisaka, does this mean you are returning to our company regularly?  You have been missed!

I'm up way too early; I have an appointment with my barber this morning, then some time in Toyland and the public library.  After that, goddaughter Charlotte and I may see a movie.

I was so tied up in rehearsal last night I forgot about PROJECT RUNWAY!  I'll check the schedule and check out a repeat.

TOD:  I would like to visit another decade, such as New York Oct 1903-April 1904, but I don't particularly wish to live in another one!  However, some DR's comments today might change my mind.

Woody was here but now I'm alone.

I would live in New York in the 1940s and have a radio program. And I would bring Anthony with me and he would be a Broadway actor/comedian. I would walk over to his theatre every night after my radio program was over and meet him at whichever show he was appearing in and we would then head home or perhaps go to some club or night spot to see and be seen.

My dream job and my dream location in my dream era with my dream honey.

Good morning!

It's been raining off and on for about 20 hours. Early this morning, around 4:20 a.m., I was awakened by a flash of lightning so bright that I thought an atom bomb had been dropped. This was followed by the loudest clap of thunder I have ever heard. My entire house shook like an earthquake was going on. Really scary at that time of the morning to be seeing and hearing such violent weather.

Two GREY'S ANATOMY repeats tonight, but I've seen one of them (the Thanksgiving episode from this past season), so I'll only be watching the 9 p.m. show. Have CSI repeat to watch, too.

There are about four episodes remaining in that first season of WILD WILD WEST episodes. No way I could get them all watched, but with the new WILL & GRACE (Season 5) box arriving late this week or early next week, I'd like to have this box finished and put away before another TV box arrives.

Thursday morning greetings!  SW Ohio is experiencing a hint of autumn today - what a relief!

TOD - I would choose the 1940's in order to be part of my immediate family during its first decade.  My parents were married in 1940 and my sister was born in 1941.  They had a whole decade of family life, which included the big move (start with a US map and a tape measure...) to the west coast, before I came along at the end of 1950.  Not that their life was easy, nor always pleasant (WW II and all that), but I'd like to meet some of the people I've only heard about.

TOD:

I, too, would like to be in the 1940s. I loved the music of the period. I'd like to be in either NYC or LA trying to break into show business. With many men out of commission for the war (provided I was 4-F), I might have better odds of breaking in.

In a couple of weeks, I'm going to be auditioning for one of the supporting roles in a local production of AMADEUS. At one point, Van Swieten mentions the Mozart opera IDOMENEO, KING OF CRETE.

Can one of your music scholars tell me the correct pronunciation of that name? Does the "i" have a "eye" sound or an "eh" sound? I'm assuming the accented syllable is the "fourth syllable, but I really have no clue. Help!!

Thanks in advance.

A meeting with Alice is always a pleasant experience.
Got our tickets for the Ripley/Skinner concert, and Janet and I are in Row L.
Who else is gonna be in NYC that weekend?

Even though the country was in the Great Depression, I think that I would have liked to have lived in the 1930s, in either NYC or the Midwest.  Either way, there would have been challenges to face, therefore, I would find out just what mettle I was made of. . .

I'm going to miss all my shows. Today I turned off my cable and soon I will go in and turn in my DVR. It will save me alot of money, sure, but I'll sure miss it. So I guess it's back to trying to download my favorite shows off the internet (I could never turn it off, it's my crack) and joining netflix. On the plus side, netflix has a great selection of offbeat movies I haven't had the chance to see so mabye it's not a totally bad thing.

TOD - I would have liked to know Mozart. I think that would have been fun, and some of those wacky soprano arias might have been written for me... I would have loved to meet and talk to Thomas Jefferson in Virginia. I would love to have known my dad as a young man in the '20's in LA. What must LA have been like then? And I would love to have been around while my mom was a young dancer. I would have encouraged her to live her dreams. She deserved that, and I got it, instead. She was invited to dance in a new show in Las Vegas, while she was pregnant with me... and already had an infant in diapers at home... and a husband and a mother in law!... Now, how is it that Penny never married, never had children, and wound up in Showbiz?

So, Pen, how'd the workshop go the other night?

Last night was so GREAT!! Major breakthrough's all around! The energy in that room was smokin'! Wow. I was born to do this!!!

I have decided to publish this workbook I've been using for nearly 20 years in these seminars... through the years I've added, changed, revamped exercises; added case histories; written up insights I've had -- it's really time to make it into a book and publish the sucker! What a major task - but I started as soon as I got home last night.

Good Afternoon!

WOW! I actually have a break.  Well, not really - I'm in a production meeting...

We just had our second orchestra rehearsal, and it went very well.  -And I'm breathing a big sigh of relief - the transpositions worked! I still have a few charts to "make pretty", but the bulk of my work is finished.  Whew! So...

I'll be back soon(er)... We start with the cast in 15 minutes, and go until 11:00... So...

Laters...

And in the meantime, I'll book a bunch more seminars and lectures, to work up any sort of a buzz and interest in the work. And maybe write a few more plays, sing some concerts, put in some time at Author Events to sell Jewish Thighs - oh, by the way - sold 2 copies without trying last night!

JH, you'll live through your cable shutdown. We did it a few months ago for many reasons, one of which was I was tired of paying $60 a month for television, much of which I find to be unadulterated crap. We didn't shut it off completely since we don't get good reception, being on the 4th floor of an old apartment building surrounded by newer, taller buildings. We went down to the lowest level. We now get all the broadcast channels in our area (including two PBS stations), C-SPAN I and II and our local all news channel, NY1. We pay a grand total of $23 a month for it. This I can live with. We don't miss the extra channels. If we really, really want to see something we have Anthony's mother record it (his folks are on Long Island). We read more, we talk more, we listen to music and we relax more. Yes, we still watch some television but I can't think of ANYTHING that I NEED to see so much that I want those extra channels. If the cable company started offering a pick your own menu at a reasonable price we might go back, but that ain't gonna happen any time soon if the cable conglomerates have anything to say about it.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you'll live and probably be a better person for it  ;)

Well, there's an article from Canada.com  (http://www.canada.com/topics/entertainment/story.html?id=de581a85-faff-40d8-9950-fd9ff101bf99&k=32224) that has some interesting info...

Quote
Travolta, 52, has been flying his Boeing 707 in and out of Hamilton as production gets underway in Toronto on the remake of Hairspray, in which he plays Edna Turnblad.

The tabloid noted that Travolta, whose left arm is on the man's back, got “up on one toe while puckering up with his pal.”

While the kiss could be nothing but a friendly peck (Travolta is, after all, half Italian) the pictures are fueling longtime speculation about the star’s sexual orientation.

At least Travolta isn't inclined to jump up and down on couches... that I know of.

(Neither Travolta or Cruise interest me in that way.  Der Brucer can breathe easier.)

Another long lunch, so I didn't have time to see much this afternoon - only two shows.

I started with the first of the four remaining episodes of the WILD WILD WEST first season boxed set. Keenan Wynn was the guest star, but everyone looked and acted rather tired in it. It was near the end of the season, and I'm sure the energy level was pretty low by that time.

Seeing it on one of the cable channels (American Life, I think), I recorded during the early morning hours a MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. episode. I haven't watched this show since the 1960s when it was the hippest thing out there.

My lord how the years can alter one's perception! Stricitly formula acting, writing, and direction in this episode from the third season. The hour episode seemed like two hours. I won't be rewatching any of these!

Before going to bed last night, I checked my office e-mail and found a note that said "Hope you're feeling better.  I need you to be here tomorrow to go over a huge document.....because the deadline is Friday."

Sure.

I was pissed.

Nothing like "last minute" for some people.

But I'm here.  I've been here.  I've been totally swamped.

And this person is nowhere NEAR ready to have anything done to that document by tomorrow.  I was actually shocked at the ill-preparedness to go public with this document by tomorrow...especially since it's been the one major project this person has been working on for two months.

I mean...there are still people who have to review it before it goes out.  And it ain't nearly ready for that yet.

I feel so used/abused/and snoturated.

DVD from the video DR George.  I borrowed it from DR OzDerek who left us a year today.  It is difficuly to ask him about his source.  DR Jason would be a possibility for you.

Ahh...I was just wondering.  Thanks. :)

And the word of the day is: RECRUDESCE!
Tonto said "Tonight, we may watch the CURS RECEDE, but soon they will RECRUDESCE and nip at our heels once more."  His masked friend was tempted to fire a silver bullet at him for showing off his language skills again.

Well, there's an article from Canada.com  (http://www.canada.com/topics/entertainment/story.html?id=de581a85-faff-40d8-9950-fd9ff101bf99&k=32224) that has some interesting info...

At least Travolta isn't inclined to jump up and down on couches... that I know of.

(Neither Travolta or Cruise interest me in that way.  Der Brucer can breathe easier.)

So can Mr. Cruise and Mr. Travolta.

I just watched the cutest Japanese comedy called WELCOME BACK, MR. MCDONALD (1997).

In the film a housewife, who has written the winning entry in a radio drama contest, is having her script performed live at a radio station...but due to egotistic actresses, wimpy directors, sponsors, envious actors, etc, all heck breaks out in trying to get it on the airwaves.

Very funny movie.

It's early, but I'm tired. So, I think I'll take a hot bath and head to bed.   I had a major sentencing today and it was the last big hearing in about 2 months of being REALLY busy.   There's still lots to do, but it will calm down to a dull roar now.  I have no work to worry about all weekend.  I am most pleased about that!

Thanks, guys.

I'm heading out, but a quick Sarah-update...why do I ALWAYS do this? :)

I'm all moved in and attending classes at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. GO DUKES! And yes, this is the school of fellow ridiculously errant/truant DR Maya, who I have yet to see...we're currently in the planning stages of our much-awaited meeting.

Kind of interesting to think that when I began posting here at HHW, I was 15. Four years! WOW. Glad to see that there are still familiar faces :).

Again, thanks for the birthday wishes. Email me! However, it has changed from the original email to davisse@jmu.edu. :)

A movie I saw a few weeks ago (June) and that I strongly recommend!

18 neighborhoods, 18 takes on the city of love
By Kristin Hohenadel The New York Times

Published: August 31, 2006
PARIS The brief for the high-profile directors of "Paris, Je t'Aime" was as sweeping as an essay question on a French baccalaureate exam: Make a five-minute film set in a Paris arrondissement that reflects the spirit of the neighborhood, the city and the nature of love itself.

But what happens when you ask mostly foreign filmmakers - including the Americans Alexander Payne, Wes Craven and Gus Van Sant; the Brazilians Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas; and the British director Gurinder Chadha - to make a love story in a city they don't know by heart?

You get a cinematic potluck in which individual exercises in style reflect at least as much about the filmmakers as about the subject matter. For example, a young immigrant mother (Catalina Sandino Moreno) cares for someone else's baby in the bourgeois 16th Arrondissement in the segment from Salles Thomas. Or the Canadian Vincenzo Natali has Elijah Wood exchanging bodily fluids with a vampiress in the Eighth Arrondissement.

The idea of a collective film with Paris as muse is not new. In 1965 "Paris Seen By" featured six vignettes from New Wave directors like Claude Chabrol and Jean-Luc Godard; the idea was reprised by a new set of filmmakers in 1984 with "Paris Seen by ... 20 Years Later." Emmanuel Benbihy, the co-producer of "Paris, Je t'Aime," bought the concept from a French television director. "The myth of Paris as a city of love is an international myth," he said. "The French see in Paris something more quotidian, problematic, existential. Foreign directors are interested in what the city gives off and what it inspires."

Though he had produced only two films, Benbihy managed to recruit the high-powered talent he wanted for "Paris." But he struggled to secure financing until Claudie Ossard, a veteran producer (of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's "Amélie," among others), came on board two years ago to plug the holes in the movie's budget of €10 million (about $13 million).

Benbihy appointed himself as a kind of über-director, devising and shooting transitional sequences - with technical help from the French director Frédéric Auburtin, the co-director of the segment set in the Latin Quarter - to link the disparate characters in an Altmanesque mosaic. But Ossard, who had final editing approval, test-screened a rough cut for an audience and found the transitions between the segments unwatchable and too long. She commissioned Auburtin to produce postcard shots of city landmarks to serve as narrative glue.

"I thought it was important that we see Paris, as we don't always see it very well in the stories, which take place in the Métro, in cafés and so on," Ossard said.

She axed contributions from the Danish director Christoffer Boe, set in the 15th Arrondissement, and the French-Israeli director Raphaël Nadjari, set in the 11th, saying that they didn't quite fit in the mix. Suddenly two arrondissements short, she renamed the film's segments for neighborhoods and landmarks.

And thus began a well-reported brouhaha between the producers, who are no longer speaking to each other. Benbihy filed a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the film's premiere at Cannes. "I wanted to make a single film with 20 directors," Benbihy said. In a heated conversation in which he alternately praised and condemned the final product, he grumbled, "The film now is broken into 18 pieces."

Ossard responded coolly, "I just did what I thought was good for the movie."

After a complex set of legal maneuvers and appeals, Benbihy won a financial settlement and the right to go forward with future related film projects. Then the film opened the Un Certain Regard section at this year's Cannes Film Festival as planned, and was released in France in June.

"Paris, Je t'Aime" wants to portray a modern, multicultural Paris blind to cultural, gender, class and even language differences. There's love at first sight in Van Sant's segment, set in the gay-friendly Marais district, and a flirtation between a Muslim girl and a white French boy by Chadha. Paris's Chinese population is center stage in a contribution from the Australian Christopher Doyle, and the German director Oliver Schmitz tells the story of two young Africans in the 19th Arrondissement.

The project includes the native directors Olivier Assayas, Sylvain Chomet, Bruno Podalydès and Auburtin. But roughly a third of the film is in English. Segments by Assayas and the German director Tom Tykwer feature American actresses playing American actresses in Paris (Maggie Gyllenhaal, speaking heavily accented French, and Natalie Portman, speaking none at all).

Directed by Payne, the final segment is a variation on one of the most familiar of Paris stories: that of an unglamorous middle-aged American tourist (Margo Martindale) wearing out her sneakers chasing the city's charms.

He rented an apartment in the 14th Arrondissement, where his co-writer, Nadine Eid lives. After a week Payne had a better feel for Montparnasse's wide boulevards and storied history, but inspiration hadn't hit. "On the plane going home, my mind kept bringing me back to an idea that I had really wanted to avoid," he said, "which was that of a tourist."

Payne speaks French, but Martindale had to read her lines phonetically, resulting in perhaps the most hilariously inventive American-accented French ever captured on film.

The film attracted mixed reviews and moderate box office in France - where it opened in June following its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. It did well for a French film, but never reached the numbers often achieved by imported talent. "Paris in 18 short films, of which 3 succeed," wrote a reviewer for Le Monde. It has no United States distributor, but it is making inroads elsewhere: "Paris, Je t'Aime" opened over the summer in Russia, Finland and Belgium, and it will be screened this month at the Toronto International Film Festival. In November and December it is set to be released in the Netherlands and Argentina, and in Germany come January.

The filmmakers salvaged some of Benbihy's scenes to provide final glimpses of characters connecting, proof that not all French love stories end in tears. Even Payne's solitary tourist is granted a movie moment of grace, allowing her to believe that Paris is capable of embracing her.

But it seems that Benbihy's heart does not belong exclusively to his hometown. He is now developing a film brand he's calling Cities of Love.

It all seems to be working now and I should be ASLEEP!!  At work, we're doing a job (re?) classification study and we all have to fill out these surveys.  We're given an hour of paid time, but if it takes you longer, you have to do it on your own time.  MOST people I know have had to take more than an hour. :P It took me over three hours and a woman in my department took over five hours!  That's not right.  Oh, well.  It's done.

Well, since I'm here, I'll continue about last night's viewing.

Next came the first of three THE OFFICE reruns. The first was the wonderful Dundie Awards episode. This episode came from the first season, I believe.

Next came the GREY'S ANATOMY episode from last season that I hadn't seen. This is the one where George cut his hair. Natalie Cole guest starred as a patient with a fork in her neck (and a dangerous brain anurism that she was hesitant to do anything about.)

I read somewhere that at some point during the second season, the viewer loses his animosity toward Mrs. Dr. Shepherd. I guess last night was supposed to be one of the episodes that helped that along, but try as I might, I can't like her. At least, not yet.

Good morning, all!  I have been puzzled by the turn-of-HHW-events this morning, so I'll post Friday on Thursday.  Sounds like Gertrude Stein, n'est-ce pas?  So far, this morning, I've ordered tickets for two performances of THE SINGING NUN, one performance of THER NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, and tried to work out a lending deal between the NY Musical Theatre Festival and myself for the loan of the recording parts to LITTLE BY LITTLE.

I also learned, to my joy and surprise, that the DVD of PRETTY POISON, my fave Tuesday Weld film, will be released this week, so it's been quite a good morning.

DR MattH, thanks for the Project Runway reminder; I think I will watch it during my bout with the laundry.

TOD:
CD:  Mendelssohn choral music, Siatra sings Cole Porter, Guy Haines always, the complete French version of Verdi's DON CARLOS

Well, thanks to our board being down for six hours we have indeed achieved a new all-time low.  Since August was basically a low month anyway, I guess we'll have to live with it, but let's try to welcome in September back on track, shall we?  I'm changing to topic, so don't post for the next minute or you'll lose the post.
