Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke to you as only the notes can, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're still playing poker - with an actual poker.  It's most amusing.

Late last night, my computer was having problems (which is never good)!  It just shut itself off! :o And the only way that I could turn it back on was to turn off the power strip and turn it back on that way.  The power button didn't do anything. :-\ Hopefully, it was just a one-time occurrence.  It had better be!  I have financially related e-mails to send this weekend!

Post by: Cillaliz on September 02, 2006, 03:07:30 AM
So why is Cilla up in the middle of the night? Is she bats? No, she HAD a bat loose in the house. That's right, I woke up to Callie thumping and bumping around and since I knew Boo was in her room for bad behavior, I couldn't figure out what it was.   Of course, as soon as I saw it fly by I knew.   SHIT!  Sorry, but that's the nicest word I can use for how I felt.

So I managed to get all the doors to the upstairs rooms shut, and the kitchen door shut.  Then I took the screen and glass out of the hall window, but the dumb thing would perch not two inches from the open window but wouldn't fly out.

Finally I put a pair of jeans over the top of a broom and managed to trap the bat in the corner of the step, pick it up and toss it out the window.  I don't believe I hurt it. It was screeching like crazy as I tossed him out.

When I finally got the window shut, I was breathing really hard and sweating to beat the band. Nothing like a little fear and exertion at 4:00 AM to get the blood flowing!

I know I shouldn't be afraid of bats, but after I was woken from a dead sleep, tried to stop the cat from getting it (it could be rabid), figured out the fastest way to get it out of the house and actually accomplished it, whew! I realized how much adreneline was pumping through my veins!

Anyway, I have washed my face with cool water, gotten a big drink of cold water and now have calmed down. I think I'm too awake to go back to sleep, so I'll go read my book,

Before I go...Der B, I think you asked about the pink undies at the Maricopa County Jail.  That was after my time there.  When I was there the sheriff's last name was Godbehere. So when you went into the jail there were these huge letters over the door that said GOD BE HERE (ok no spaces, but that's how I always read it)

No, she HAD a bat loose in the house.

Probably more than one!

 IOWA Radio (http://www.wjla.com/headlines/0605/233911.html) reports:

Quote
BADGER, Iowa (AP) - Bats live in the majority of Iowa homes without the owners even knowing it, experts with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said. They live in chimneys, attics and crawl spaces, and usually don't drive homeowners batty if they if they remain in those uninhabited areas, said Mark McInroy, a DNR technician.

Experts don't know how many bats live in Iowa or whether the bat population is changing.

Nate Gibson said he and his wife, Julie, have been chasing the occasional bat from their home for nearly a year. He said he understands that one bat seen can mean dozens, or more, that remain hidden.

Dwayne Kay, owner of Storm Lake-based Kay Bat Control, said his business took on the challenge of de-batting Gibson's home.

"When people call us and say they've got a bat or a few bats, I explain, 'You've got more than that,'" Kay said.

He estimates that the average home he works on has as many as 150 bats. Some have colonies of close to 1,000, he said.

Have you a belfry?

Cillaliz, what a horrible experience you had! I, too, had a bat in my house once. The City was taking down many lovely old trees and the wildlife needed new homes. Unfortunately for us both, my bedroom was not the right venue! My bat didn't want to leave, either. A friend came over the next day and got him out, but was far more concerned about possibly harming the bat than about what this experience had done to me. So, believe me, I do know how upsetting this can be. I think you were very brave and composed. AND, aside from the rabidity issue, bats have sharp teeth and claws.
I hope you're able to give yourself a nice R&R day today.

Happy B'day to Ron!

I occasionally indulge in a little poker for low stakes, but the current rage Texas Hold'em, I've rarely played and don't remember how.  I always like draw poker, seven-card stud, or Tennessee Walker (also known as Mexican Sweat).

When I was in LA, my pal Pat and I went in on a weekly Lottery Ticket.  Now in Kentucky, I occasionally spring for a powerball ticket.

I'm not a big gambler though and the few times, I've been in Vegas I've only indulge in the slots.  If I lose more than twenty bucks, I quit.  Usually I've come home with some dough or at least broken even.

Never been much of a fan of poker. I much prefer Gin or Hearts. And not to gamble. I don't like gambling for money. I had to work too hard to earn it.

We used to play Hearts all weekend back in college. We'd order pizza delivered and just sit there for hours and hours playing. Great fun.

No, I have an attic, and I have been up there as has my energy inspector not that long ago. neither of us saw a bat colony, well, if he did he didn't say anything.  I was thinking today that maybe it came down the chimney, so I'm planning to have it swept before this fall to make sure.  I'm also planning to have the insulation in my attic increased. I don't think I have a colony, I don't hear them in the walls like some people do. But it wasn't a lot of fun.   I had one in my old house once and never saw them again.

I do see them flying outside at night.   They eat mosquitos, so I don't mind them in the neighborhood, just not in my house.

After the great bat incident, I read the chapter of Mockingbird (the bio not TKAM) about Nelle Lee going to Kansas with Truman to do all the background work that led to In Cold Blood.   The author apparently had access to both Nelle's notes and Truman's notes. She put a lot more into the research behind the novel that I had realized.   So after having a bat in the house and reading about the Clutter murder, I was able to go back to sleep like a baby, .lol

TOD - When I was in high school I had a summer job one year, working in the offices of the United Appeal. It was the most boring job in the world: cutting up the phone book of the entire city of Toronto and dividing it into areas for the UA volunteers to canvas. At lunch, the full-time UA ladies who worked there had a penny ante Poker game that had been going on forever. They taught me to play and for that summer I was hooked. Have rarely played since. But those Poker games saved my sanity. (Although some might argue with that.)

I also have a weakness for slot machines. The lucky one for that kind of thing, however, was my mother. She ALWAYS won something in the weekly lottery - nothing huge - but $20. or $50. - sometimes more. Put her near a slot machine and the money came pouring out. She also almost always won the doorprize anywhere she went where there was one offered. That kind of luck seems to have skipped a generation - I sure don't have it - but my DD, who was very close to my mother, does. She's also a great card player.

I am now the proud owner of a butterfly net....actually, I think there is one in the garage that the previous owner left behind, so maybe there is a lot in store for me here, but, I have been reading and they say if you only have one or two a year, you probably don't have a real problem.  And they say that this is the time of year that bat pups tend to get lost and end up in people's houses. Luckily it looks like Iowa bats migrate, so after another month or so, there shouldn't be a problem again.

I love to play cards but don't very often anymore.   I love spades, hearts, 500, Pitch, etc.  I used to play poker in law school, but it was low stakes, nickel ante quarter limit.  It was more for getting together than it was for the game

Had some interesting telephone conversations today, but also managed to watch a couple of things.

I started by finishing TO CATCH A THIEF. The latter half of the DVD looks better than the earlier scenes in ters of sharpness and grain. Seeing that masquerade ball, I can understand why Edith Head was so upset that her fancy dress ball gowns lost to the kimonos of LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING. That was something I remember her bitching about a lot.

Good Morning From OZ.

We saw a local non-professional production of "Beauty & The Beast" on Friday night.

It's a cute show and the company did a good job given their limited resourses.  Unfortunately "the Beast" was a let down as you did not feel for him.  I think you really need that Act One closing song to "Touch" the audience.

Last night's viewing was "Candide" which is such fun.  DP Colin's choice as he had been listening to the "new" CD I"d been playing in the morning.

Okay, so I visited the dealer rooms at Cinecon, and there's always one guy who has tons of theater programs - I got a few.  One that I got from some Long Beach Community Theater production of Bye Bye Birdie from 1963 was most interesting.  I bought it because in this production, local girl Jennifer Warnes played Kim.  Funny, huh?  Albert and Rosie were played by Del Moore and Sherree North, and Momma was played by Lynn Bari, so they got some notables in the show.  Now, more interestingly, in the chorus was a fifteen-year-old youngster named Drew Eshelman.  Drew, of course, has played Thernardier hundreds of times in Les Miz, both on Broadway and on tour, and he appeared in our cast recording of After The Ball.  BUTT - even more interestingly is another chorus member, who also served as rehearsal pianist - are you ready?  The one and only - SKIP KENNON.

Personally, I'd go with the "NC-17."  The "NC-17" version would be more explicit than the "R" rated version, which would have to have bits and pieces cut out to get the "R" rating.  It's the new "X" (but it's not "XXX," which is of course, PORN). ;)

George-I’m very happy you are getting the condo you wanted.

Thanks!  I am too! ;D

I went to work for a little bit (not to work, though) because on Wednesday, my realtor and I got together and filled out and signed all the forms (contracts) that I needed to and yesterday the seller signed everything and made a few changes.  I went into work so that I could have the papers faxed to me (we're allowed to receive and to send faxes if they don't involve long distance phone charges), then I had to initial all the changes and sign a couple of other pages and then fax the pages with changes to the seller's agent.  Originally, my agent (Sheryl, who is in Packwood today) was going to drive up to her office in Gig Harbor from Packwood, then drive back down here to Tumwater so that I could sign the papers, then drive all the way back to Gig Harbor then go back to Packwood.  Because the pages could all be faxed and faxed back, Sheryl saved about nine hours of driving!  I'm glad that it all worked out...because that means:

I'VE OFFICIALLY BOUGHT A CONDO!!

(dependent, of course, on an inspection of the premises and my finances.) ;D

I remember when Bob Newhart's show came on in the 1970's and the description in TV Guide was something like "Bob Newhart stars in this new series about a condominium owner who works as a psychiatrist in Chicago."

It was some big deal to be a condominium owner then, right?  It struck me as very impressive at the time.

I just finished talking to my neighbor across the street.  I jokingly said "Did you hear me scream last night?" She said "YES, it really freaked me out and I almost called the police"  Turns out she reads a lot of Dean Koontz and she had a very frightening image of what was going on in my house.   I told her the bat story.  She was glad to hear it I wasn't tied up and someone burning my fingernails off - Yikes, with that imagination I wonder how she sleeps at night!

Anyway, they don't get bats, but the neighbor next to them does. I've heard more bat stories today that I really care to. Oh Joy

I was able to get the Fall tv preview TV Guide last night, and I looked through it (and my sister's Entertainment Weekly). There are really not too many shows that interest me.

I will try a few: Brothers & Sisters (Calista Flockhart, Ron Rifkin...), Ugly Betty (young girl works in fashion house), and the Anne Heche show on Friday nights.

I'm not sure if i will watch Nine (scott wolf drama about 9 people trapped in a robbery together.

The one that i actually think sounds the most interesting is Six Degrees (i'm not sure if the full title is six degrees). Anyhow it is by the creators of Lost and Alias.

I know the most talked about new show is Studio 60. I may give that one try.

Congrats, DR and Homeowner George!

Just came back from seeing an excellent movie! HALF NELSON, starring the terrific Ryan Gossling. Highly recommended. Here is the first paragraph of the NY Times review:
“Half Nelson” is that rarest of marvels — an American fiction film that wears its political heart on its sleeve. It’s a small film with a long view, and its story hinges on an unusually nuanced relationship between a white man [a history teacher] and a black girl [his 13-year-old student], each of whom has landed in harm’s way. The delicacy of its lead performances... and its sense of everyday texture are each worthy of praise. But what makes “Half Nelson” both an unusual and an exceptional American film, particularly at a time when even films about Sept. 11 are professed to have no politics, is its insistence on political consciousness as a moral imperative.

Does it mean a crisp no pan and scan transfer with very few artifactm, washed our titles, softened color but a non fuzzy sound in almost the correct ratio but only marginally improved from the laserdisc transfer  - the one without the director's cut fingerprints?

I do get all these things confused. Maybe that's why I can't find the visuals on my CD.

We have been ordering new dog supplies from an on-line company, including a new black crate (Echo’s old one won’t be large enough). We received everything except the leads & a grooming table.  I wish we had had a table for Echo, maybe then I wouldn’t have messed up my hip grooming her on the floor.

We were charged for the grooming table & then credited for it.  I called & they said it was discontinued but I could order the next size up for the same amount.  Now I need to call them back, same scenario-we were charged for the table, should have received it but now there is a credit back into our account.  Yet both times we were not informed of the changes.???

We did receive the missing leads (a type of training leash).  Also packed in the box was an empty jar of Vaseline.  ::)

Yes I read canoe.

I think janelle has won mostly because of so many people throwing comps. And also the fact that willboogie have helped her win a bunch.

I think that the morph comp (which she won fairly) was actually probably done to favor her (since she did so well in the same comp last year). It was obvious chicken george would not do well in that one. But that said, nobody could predict how danielle was going to do. And she did quite well.

I would be curious though to know which season did that rope comp. I do like that one, but i think they did it last year. And i'll bet janelle was not good at it then either.

I don't mind if we disagree. It's just sometimes i wonder if we are watching the same show. I think will is using janelle. But i also think that she has gotten a lot out of it too. Willboogie have helped her win a bunch of comps.

I would have hated if george had won, since he had no strategy and was a terrible player. Sure he was nice. But I would have been furious.  Danielle is a great player so i would have been okay if she had won.  I will be pretty mad if erika wins.

As i said before, the showmance that is making me ill is boogie/erika. She is gonna feel like the biggest fool.

Oh and as for Chilltown ditching Janelle (and this was my opinion before will and boogie realized this). I think that if they both want to be in F2 then it is better for them to ditch erika.

Erika is good at endurance. And it would be better for mike to keep erika (since she will take him to F2). But if it is Willboogie's goal to both make it to F2 then they need to ditch erika. Because it would be in erika's best interest to get rid of will. I think will/boogie could be in big trouble if she wins veto, because she would need to get rid of will.

ERika knows that will and boogie would take each other to final 2 over her. BUt if erika gets rid of will, then she is guaranteed to go to F2 (cause either boogie or janelle would take her).

I think chilltown has realized this and they are making sure that erika does not win pov.

This puppy is cuter than Mr Bowie, but then what do I know!!! ;)

LOL-Bryan says if we take him we should name him Bowie.  Keith says we must be crazy to get another dog so our dog will be named Muzbe, as in muz be.  I'm partial to Rone after the river.  It seems to me a Swiss Mountain Dog should have a Swiss name, sort of like my naming Echo after a Mountain Nymph.  I think Bowie is a cute name for a dog.  I also like Tolstoy.

I have been watching the strangest Brit sitcom MULBERRY, about death coming for a difficult old lady played by Geraldine McEwen.  I've now watched about six episodes and I haven't sorted out my feelings.

DR Tomovoz, I am around, and looking forward immensely to your and Colin's arrival.  I'm not thinking right now beyond opening THE SINGING NUN, I'm sorry to say.  Give me another few days to get my calendar in order.

I found some tape boxes that didn't have labels, so I spent tonight watching a very eccelctic assortment of things.

I began with four MYSTERIES & SCANDALS episodes. The subjects were:

1. George Reeves

2. James Dean

3. Jean Harlow

4. Judy Garland

Only the first had a real mystery attached though I suppose the death of Harlow's second husband Paul Bern is still somewhat of a mystery.

Next came a box that had "Tony Awards" written on it, but I hadn't put the year. As it turned out, it was 2002 and 2003 - the years of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE and HAIRSPRAY winning Best Musical. Skipped 2002 for the most part, but enjoyed the 2003 show a lot.

That 2003 Tony program had recorded over the 1973 Marlene Dietrich concert taped in London. Since there was only about 15 minutes of the show remaining on the tape, I went ahead tonight and bought a used copy of the DVD of this concert. Marlene was 72 years old and not looking or singing her best, but I do want the entire concert and am glad it was still available cheaply.

Back from Mr. Geissman's.  We put the book to bed - I think I've caught all I'm going to catch and I'm hoping it's most of the stuff (you never really catch everything no matter how hard you try or how many people go through it).  All I'm waiting on now is a blurb or two, which I hope to have shortly and then everything will go in on Tuesday morning.

Afterwards we went out to dinner and then had some fun back at Grant's house.
