Title: I DRAW THE LINE
Post by: bk on December 17, 2003, 12:13:17 AM
Well, by now you've read the notes so you know what my true love is up to and you know how I'm drawing the line.

Interesting, very interesting... BK's post was the 12900th post.  -I just find it interesting that it's a round number... as opposed to a square, rectangular or octagonal number.

______________________________

See, I can draw a line too!  Oh, let's see if I can make it do a trick?!?

------------------------------------------------

See?  Now's a broken line, well, dashes....  Oh, and one more trick... Hmm......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
YEAH!  A Wavy Line!  Good Line!  Good Line!
-Now what kind of treat do you give a line?
Oh, Ask BK, Ask DR Day:
What is your favorite type of line to stand in (waiting)?
What is your least favorite type of line to stand in?
What is the longest line you've ever stood in?
What is the longest amount of time you've stood in line?  (Yes, this question and the preceding could be the same or not depending upon you experiences... and syntax.)
Well, that's enough for now.. I just hope I don't fall asleep between my chair and the bed... Oh, no!... Too late....
Goodnight.
I'll probably answer those questions tomorrow, DR Jose. I'm so sleepy--about to go to bed. I just wanted to let DRs Dan and Laura know that I am sorry about the losses of their mothers. You and your families will be in my thoughts and prayers.
I hope I can fall asleep soon...someone just sang Billy Joel's "Lullaby" to me over the phone. So soothing and...::deep sigh:: I'm so content right now!  :D
Hmmmmmmmm....I will have to think about Jose's questions.
DR Lulu is arriving in Indianapolis today and sometime over the next week we will be having a lunch!
A lot of DR's are traveling and having fun.  How delightful.
My question for ASK BK day is:
What was your favorite television quiz show when you were growing up?  Who was your favorite panelist & host?  And what game show did you just not find entertaining at all?
Jose - your questions will require some pondering.
Least favorite type of line:
The line at the Post Office - because usually the person being waited on is telling the clerk his/her life story or is sending out Quilts for Jesus and expects Him to know the right Zip Code.
Favorite type of line:
the line for a movie, because you are excited to see it, and you are usually with friends.
Longest line, longest time:
Either Disney World or King's Island to ride on some attraction.  Usually NOT worth it, but sometimes it IS!!!
Good morning everyone!  What an icky day it is here.  We had a huge 30+cm snowstorm Sunday and Monday. And now today we have lovely freezing rain, and tomorrow we will have more snow. I hate winter!
DR Noel: I hope you saw my post yesterday about the cd. It was on page 4.
DR MBarnum: No, M+Ms yet. I hope the mailman doesn't kill himself trying to deliver them today.
Btw, I realized what takes my computer so long to do at HHW. It's all the stuff on the left hand side of each post (country, status, karma, picture ...). If I read the posts as a guest, it takes like 1/4 of the time to load each page!
I don't mind a lineup at a theatre. On my recent trip to New York I waited outside the Henry Miller theatre for rush seats to Urinetown. The time passed quickly - schmoozing with an aspiring actress from NYC and a theatre maven from Tulsa.
I have no patience on a lineup at the bank; JRand said it best. Also, and I don't know if this is a Toronto thing, I hate a supermarket lineup on which the person ahead of me starts fumbling for change and counting pennies after the total's been rung up.
The longest line I waited stood in was to have something appraised at "Antique Roadshow." I waited over eight hours. If we'd known it was that long, we'd have skipped the whole thing. I did, however, make my television debut. Well, the camera panned over the line, and someone said she recognized me.
Worst line: Airport security, because I know I'm going to be searched. And either coming or going, I ALWAYS am.
Favorite Line: Waiting fri your ticket to be ripped at a Broadway Show..especially if you have never been in that particular theatre before.
Least Favorite: Line at the 12 or less items check out  with that one person who tries to sneak 20 items because "its all the same cat food" :P
Question to all: Anyone wanna reccomend a good book?
I despise post office lines. They seem to move more slowly than any other kind of line. Don't really relish lines at the grocery store checkout either, but that's why I go early on Sunday morning so there won't be one.
For Ask BK Day: Are you a fan of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas? (I'm not, but I'm always curious who is and which ones they like.)
How about other DRs out there. Do you like Gilbert and Sullivan? If so, which ones? Are there any you can't stand even if you like some of the others.
For Diane: Good book..THE CHRISTMAS BOX by Paul Evans. I loved it. Sappy I suppose, but I almost always buy it for someone at this time of year.
I also hate grocery store lines when people stand there and wait until everything is rung up...THEN they pull out the check book and slowly write it out (which they could have been doing whilst the checker was ringing up the purchases)...there there is the inevitable "That was on sale, I am sure it was!"
As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a good line (especially, "Do you come here often?" ...Sorry, couldn't resist.)
-- I hate standing on line. On the other hand, I do have this capacity to totally zone out and either people-watch or transport my mind somewhere else. That comes from childhood when I would constantly have stories that I made up (little plays) running through my head, whenever boring occasions like walking to school came up. So that makes standing in a lineup a little more palatable, I suppose.
Okay, gotta get ready. My dog is having his first LA bath early this morning and I have to deliver him to the place. He's just innocently lying around, not knowing what's about to happen. I feel a little guilty. Later today, I go to a fancy schmanzy place to get my hair trimmed and highlighted. This is my present to myself. And I will look deeevine, dahlinks. My dog and I will both look deevine!
Wait for DR emily to finish her exam and I'm sure she'll answer that. She loves all G&S.
Personally, I like G&S when it is done by my university. Prof. type student singers and the most random things included. It's quite worth it.
Let's see... Diane asked if anyone can recommend a good book.  Let's see... That will really require some thinking... Let's see... Well, if you enjoy this here site, Diane, you might want to give Benjamin Kritzer and its sequel Kritzerland a go.  If you go to the "notes" page you can find links to them and they are written by a buff and toned person with abs and buns of steel.
Hate any kind of line.
Don't know much about Gilbert and Sullivan I'm afraid to say.
Favorite quiz shows growing up: Treasure Hunt with Mr. Jan Murray, and The 64,000 Question.
I guess DR Diane didn't like my book suggestion.  :'(
I love HMS Pinafore!  The other ones are okay...except I don't like The Mikado much.  But HMS makes me laugh from beginning to end.  And the music and lyrics just sparkle.  Rafe Rackstraw, Dick Deadeye, Josephine, Sir Joseph Porter, Captain Corcoran, Cousin Hebe, Buttercup - all the sailors and their ladies - I love them all!
I once choreographed a production of it with Jr High and High School students and they had a blast!
In case you can't tell, I LOVE HMS PINAFORE!
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]"Ring the merry bells aboardship, rend the air with warbling wild!"[/move]
And of course the Kritzer books are the BEST choice. :-[  Why didn't WE think of that?
Lines affect me in different ways.  Sometimes they're bores.
But other times, they're highly amusing.  The ones that amuse me the most are the ones other folks try to "tow."
You know...they write that they had to "tow the line" and I get grand images of a huge line of something (you know, people, tires, Corinthian columns, Calistoga wagons, etc.) all linked together by some sort of harness and one plucky individual doing his or her darnedest to "tow that line" effectively.
Invariably, though, my images are dashed to pieces when I realize they ultimately meant they were "toeing a line" -- in other words, disciplining themselves against something that would otherwise rule their lives rather than them having control.
If Johnny Cash could "walk the line," wouldn't you think someone somewhere could "tow" a line?
Well, I have to toe the line today.  I've got STUFF to get done.  First, I have to drink some coffee.  Then I have to cajole and stroke and pet and coo my cat all the way to the kennel.  THEN I can start getting other petty stuff done.
That doesn't include packing which I'm anticipating with gusto.  I long to start laying things out right now, but cats being the fickle and vengeful/spiteful creatures they can be, I dare not risk laying anything out right now.  No, I must bide my time, sip my coffee and get ready to make extraordinary efforts to get my kitty to the kennel.
(I personally cannot wait until BK's true love presents him with three French hens.  Are those hens going to give him l'attitude or what?)
 ;)
DR Ron, do you drink regular coffee, decaffenated coffee, or a personal blend of coffees?
Title: Re:I DRAW THE LINE
Post by: Ron Pulliam on December 17, 2003, 08:33:32 AM
DR MattH:  Yes, thank you for asking.
Actually, I drink a coffee called "Fogbuster" and it's a blend sold by a San Francisco firm called Jeremiah's Pick.  I'm fond of French roasts and Italian roasts, too.  Oh, yes, caffeine is my drug of choice!
As for Gilbert & Sullivan, I always thought I ought to love those operettas, but the only pleasure I've ever derived from them is when they are excerpted in various films -- I guess it's the scenery and costumes and names of characters (Yum-Yum) that amuse.  But I fall asleep trying to listen to G&S.
I'm not much of a G&S fan, but my mom LOVES G&S.  A couple of years ago I got my mom a 2-CD compilation of "the best" of G&S and a three-videotape set of G&S productions filmed live in Canada.  The cutest adaptation of a G&S show was when a local children's theater did "The Mikado Goes West."  It was The Mikado set in the Old West with gun fighters, bad guys all in black and good guys all in white.  I don't know if it's actually available in that version or if they adapted it themselves, but it was actually pretty good.  The cast was a bit on the younger side (for this theater group--all the kids are between 8 and 16), but it was just so cute you didn't mind, especially since a lot of them were actually very good.
Quite a few years ago my family and I saw a national touring production of "Pirates" with Peter Noone (from Herman's Hermits) and Jim Belushi.  At the time he was only known as John Belushi's brother.  They (and the show) were actually quite good.  On another "Pirates" note (Bb), Anthony Head (formerly of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") will be playing TWO different pirates in repertory...both Captain Hook in "Peter Pan" and the Pirate King in "Pirates of Penzance" in London.  CLICK HERE (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/83348.html) for the Playbill.com article.
How about one of Dickens' other Christmas books? THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH perhaps. And it's not very long either since everyone is SO busy around this time of year.
I can answer 2 of DR Matt's questions by plugging my shows, and you know, I never turn down an opportunity to do that.
One of the Dickens Christmas books, THE BATTLE OF LIFE was the basis of my 1988 musical, The Christmas Bride.  Still, I can't recommend the original - we had to throw out just about the entire plot in refining the show into something audiences enjoy.
G & S... HMS Pinafore was the first I saw, so it holds a special place in my heart.  I think The Mikado is a masterpiece but my favorite is Iolanthe, perhaps because the thought of politicians being turned into fairies amuses me.  Or maybe it's just the higher quantity of patter songs.  Trial By Jury, which I performed in college, has the advantage of being short.
But, at the time, I did a lot of thinking about what it is people don't like about Gilbert and Sullivan: the length, the jokes that no longer make sense, the weird bits of vocabulary familiar to Victorians and lawyers and no one else.  So, I wrote a mystery, Murder at the Savoy (or, Pulley of the Yard) that is none of these bad things, but every bit in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan.  Short, it makes the perfect companion piece to the similarly short Trial By Jury.  Some of you may remember it was done at the Edinburgh Festival last summer, its third British production.
Plug #3: www.WeddingMusical.com (http://www.WeddingMusical.com).  Question for DRs: What's stopping (some of) you from purchasing Our Wedding - The Musical?
Ask DR Responses:
Least favorite line = waiting to be let into an exam room before it begins (lots of frantic people smell bad) :(
G&S: I do enjoy a good Gilbert and Sullivan but I think Andrea exaggerated my familiarity with them.  So far I have only seen Pirates, Ruddigore and the Mikado all of which I enjoyed (but the Mikado was a eeensy weensy bit too long).  I really really like McGill's Savoy Society because a) the singing quality is much better than comunity theatre presentations (almost all of the actors are music students from McGill's famous faculty) and b) they like doing really weird and random modern interpretations of the shows.  Like adding a section where the ghosts in Ruddigore dance to Michael Jackson's "Thriller" or setting HMS Pinnafore on a Star-Trek like space ship.
I'm off to lunch with my sister and her boyfriend.  She bet me a meal the second week of SURVIVOR that Sandra would win it all.  Seeing the odds of someone else actually winning (there were what... 15 other possibilties?) I took her on.  And lost.  Oh well... fake french-canadian tex-mex is yummy :)
DR Emily,
I won't join you in the exams-are-over dance (remember Elaine dancing at the Peterson Christmas party?), but congratulations - and enjoy your late sleeps.
Another line that bugs me: the escalator line. There shouldn't be one, but it exists in Toronto. I don't mind weaving around right-standers and left-standers, but the stationary couples are the ones who stir up this normally pleasant ex-New Yorker.
And while Toronto's pedestrians don't line up at red lights, they wait extremely patiently - even when there's not a car in view.
On a related note, some time ago I was desperate for a taxi. It was downtown rush hour and raining buckets, and when at last a cabbie caught my eye, I motioned for him to pull over at the closest spot. By the time I got to the cab door, a gentleman was already working his way into the seat. "Excuse me," I bristled. "This is my taxi!" "So sorry he replied," and exited quietly before I had even finished letting off steam.
Good morning.
I guess I should answer my own questions...
For me, the post office line just depends on my mood.  Sometimes when the lines are really long - like around this time of year - I actually sort of enjoy waiting in line.  I kind of laugh at myself for coming to the post office around the same time that everyone else in there has decided to come to the post office.  And, yes, the people watching is lots of fun too.  I also tend to be a bit of "helper" - if I notice someone is looking for the correct forms to fill out, then I help them find the right ones; if someone is clearly just standing in line for stamps - and there happens to be a "store" or stamp only line, then I direct them over there, etc.  -Hey, it eventually helps the line move along much faster.  However, my local post office in Richmond does irk me regularly - and I hardly ever go there.  Five "windows", but usually there are only two people working, most of the time one... and then there's usually the one clerk who is at his/her counter, but is working on other stuff... kind of a false hope.  When I'm up in Fairfax, my parents live right by the big regional post office.  Lots of windows, lots of clerks, and a postal store counter (for those stamp only purchases).  And, best of all, they open early, and stay open late (until 11:30 or midnight depending upon the time of the year - seven days a week!).  And since they are one of the main regional offices, I've always had very good "luck" with delivery times.  I've mailed letters from there one morning, and they were in NYC the next morning - and that was just with a stamp on the envelope - no priority nor ovenight.
Bank lines are bearable since I'm usually in line to make a deposit, so... It's worth it.  And if it does look like it will take a while, I just use the ATM.
Theatre lines - I don't like getting to my seat too early - especially when most seats in NYC are a little cramped and don't have enough leg room.  And there's only so many times I can read through the Playbill.   ;)
The longest line I've ever stood in had to be for a ride at Disneyworld.  However, it did move fast strangely enough.
The longest amount of time I've ever spent in line was probably for a free theatre/music event.  Just had to get there early, and stay there until the event began.  I'll get back later with specifics if I remember them.
And as for my favorite "line" - "Um, you look like you need a backrub..."   :P  *Any other DRs remember that SNL skit with "Siskel & Ebert" reviewing "adult movies"?  Still makes me laugh!  ;D
Book recommendations - and I think I've recommended them before...  If you're in the mood for something New Age-y, give The Four Agreements a try.  It's a short book.  Some of the language does get a little "ethereal" at times, but it does make its point and present its ideas.  For a wonderful journey, The Adventures of Kavalier & Clay can't be beat.  This is a particular favorite of DR Jason.  It will be interesting to see what happens in/to the movie adaptation of it.  And, yes indeed, Benjamin Kritzer and Kritzerland are wonderful reads too.  And if you happen to be in the mood for a major read of a major classic, there's that somewhat new translation on Anna Karenina.  Very well done.
As for G&S - I've played rehearsals for a Savoyards group... Some of those people are downright scary I tell you!  Scary!  Capital-S!  I'll go see a G&S show if someone has tickets, but not something I'd purchase on my own.  Oh, and as for "The Mikado Out West" - I do believe there's a company that licenses that version - I seem to recall that title from my days as a print music buyer.
Oh, and for all you coffee (or coffe_ if you prefer) mavens, did you know that the darker the roast, the less caffeine there is in the finished product (usually).  The extra roasting does help deepen and enrich the flavor of the beans, but it also burns off/out some of the caffeine.  However, the extra roasting also enhance some of the other compounds in coffee, and part of the resulting buzz is from those compounds, not the caffeine.  *A friend of mine jets horrible jitters from drinking coffee, but she does need caffeine every now and then - can you say, "Two show day"?  Her doctor recommended that she switch over to some teas that have caffeine - some with some comparable amounts to coffee.  Well, it worked.  She drinks the tea, gets her caffeine fix, but no jitters.  It was all the other "stuff" in coffee that was giving her the jitters.
-What am I today?  A fount of knowledge?  Hope I'm not coming down with anything.. <knock wood>
Game shows: I liked "$64,000 Question" too.  However, didn't it eventually turn into the "128,000 Question"?  However, my favorites ones have to be the locally produced high school quiz shows.  Great questions - hard ones too, and they move along pretty fast.  And the "smarts" on some of those kids - makes me feel good about the future.
I shall now return to my regular programming...
Diane: As far as books go, the Kritzer novels really can't be beat, and I'm not just saying that because they're BK's books. I read both of them in four days flat. Get them, get them, get them. As DR Jose pointed out, THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER AND CLAY is one of the most wonderful books I've ever read and I'll recommend it to people to the day I die. I recently finished reading AUNTIE MAME, which was a good time, and I'm currently working on three books (!): AROUND THE WORLD WITH AUNTIE MAME, THE PRINCESS BRIDE and THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN. Three of the most enjoyable books I've ever read are all by David Sedaris: ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY, BARREL FEVER and NAKED. Laugh out loud funny, they are. I got strange looks on the subway while reading those because of the belly laughs I'd randomly let out. And Gregory Macguire's books (WICKED, LOST, CONFESSIONS OF AN UGLY STEPSISTER) are all great, and I can't wait to read his new one, MIRROR, MIRROR.
How's that for book suggestions? You better get hoppin' if you want to have them all read by Christmas. :D
I hate standing on line (spoken like a true New Yorker...in Kentucky we say standing "in" line). The longest line I've ever waited in/on was the TKTS line a couple of summers ago...and I wasn't even the one buying tickets! Given the past experiences, though, I must say that standing in/on line at the post office makes me the most angry. Damn their eyes, I want my mail!!
I did HMS PINAFORE in undergraduate school...I was the Boatswain, Bill Bobstay. It probably would have been a lot of fun, but it was my second show that semester and we started rehearsals the day after our first show closed, so I hadn't had a break and my school work was bogging me down. Otherwise I think I might have enjoyed it more. I also enjoyed doing scenes from PIRATES OF PENZANCE, and I remember enjoying seeing PIRATES in London when I was a kid, but I must admit, I'm not a huge G&S afficionado.
Game Shows: I love, love, love The Family Feud. Jeopardy makes me happy, too. I hate Wheel of Fortune with a passion (dunno why).
Here's where I draw the line: P-Diddy is going to play the Sidney Poitier role in the upcoming Broadway revival of A RAISIN IN THE SUN. What the f*@& does P-Diddy know about acting?!?!
In other casting news, Barrett Foa will be joining the cast of AVENUE Q; Richard Dreyfus and Lee Evans will be the Original London Max and Leo in THE PRODUCERS and that's all I can remember right now.
RE: P. Diddy's casting in the upcoming Raisin in the Sun...  I had been hearing "rumbles" about his efforts to get seen for the project.  Now as to whether he initiated the efforts himself or his agent and/or publicist, I do not know...  But he did give a good audition as the press releases have stated.  If he ends up doing a great job, then more power to him.  If not, at least the curiosity factor will drive some tickets sales - for better or worse.  And that's what I'm scared of...  There are bound to be some of his fans and admirers who will buy tickets to see him and not the play.  And some of them may end up being in for quite a surprise when they find out it is not a rap show/concert.  We'll have to see how the rest of the casting turns out.
I dunno... just my mid-day babbling.
*Oh, and my niece said my name - well, at least my nickname, "Jo-jo".   :D
My favorite line is A CHORUS LINE.
I saw URINETOWN for the 2nd time last night.  It was a full house on a Tuesday in mid-December.  I don't know why they are closing... they should move to another theatre when theirs gets torn down next month.  How about the Cort since BOBBIE BOLAND is long gone.
Anyway the show is as much fun as ever.  A combination of original cast members (most notably Spencer Kayden and Jeff McCarthy) plus some excellent replacements (Luther Creek. Carolee Carmelllo and Amy Spangler) keep the show fresh.  Interesting that two years ago Carmello and Spangler were together in KISS ME KATE in roles that are totally opposite from what they are doing now.
Instead of collecting for AIDS at the end of the show they were passing out letters that had been addressed to Santa.  We took one from an 8 year old boy whose mother is always working and whose father is out of the country.  I collected at work today and Ray is collecting where he works tomorrow and we'll send the kid a gift certificate from Sears so he can pick out whatever he wants.
Emily--congrats on having finished your exams, lol!  For me, it's 3 down, 2 to go...fortunately, I did well on my Western Civ exam just now...thanks for helping me sort out Abbasids and Ummayads, btw!
P Diddy in a Raisin in the Sun...sorry...don't see it...I mean maybe he'll surprise everyone.  But I'm just not seeing it.
I don't mind lines for theatre tickets too much cause there's some level of anticipation involved.  Lines for the ladies room at Broadway theatres are the worst!
DR WEL - Good to hear about Urinetown.  I actually just went ahead and purchased tickets for my trip up in January.  -Alas, no Hugh Panaro fix this time - maybe I'll see him on the street... But since the show will be closing that weekend, and I have yet see the show actually (I know, horror of horrors), and since one of my former students is in it (although I wish Megan Lawrence was still in it, worked with her many times in DC)... And they're running a nice discount for the closing weeks.  I usually hate paying handling fees, but the discount was enough to make it worth it.  So, I'm looking forward to seeing the show.  -And they are looking into moving it into a new space.. maybe even back to off-Broadway... although I'm not sure the actors would be happy with that since the AEA scales would undoubtedly be affected.  I think...  We'll see what happens.  *I was hoping to see the tour in Baltimore since I have friends in that production, but the stop was cancelled due to low advance ticket sales.  :(
Oh, and I also was able to get good seats for Caroline, or Change.  *It will be an interesting day - Caroline at the matinee followed by Hairspray in the evening.  Interesting companion pieces.  Hmmm...
*I finalized my choice for Caroline after reading the article on Jeanine Tesori in yesterday's NYTimes - such a great spirit and love for the piece, for the craft.  I forgot that she's with Michael Rafter now.  Her previous beau was Keith Levenson - another musical director/conductor.  -I first knew her as Jeanine Levenson.
Oh, and DR WEL (again) - That's a great idea about the letters to Santa.  I wonder if any other shows are doing the same thing?  -That would seem kind of hard to manage in a larger house.  Kind of like the Angel Tree program in the malls.  Very thoughtful.  -Oh, do you bring Santa's presents back to the theatre?  Or is there another drop off point/organization that collects them?  -Just curious.
Oh, it's snowing!... oh, well.. it was snowing...
In Montreal we also say "in line" and not "on line".
Btw, I always hear about post office lines. Here we have post offices at most of the malls.  At the one I go to regularly there is only one or two tellers. But there is rarely a line (well maybe 2 people at most).
I also started using the post office at Bureau en Gros, because I found out they let you use credit cards, which is great.
DR Maya,
Speaking of lines for the Ladies' Room, there was an item in the Toronto Star about the enormous lineup (at the WC) on opening night of the Producers here. Karen Kain, the ballerina, simply exited the theatre, used the facilities at the Senator restaurant across the street, and returned relieved.
DR Emily (and anyone else). This may be a useful tip. When you're in New York City's theatre district and need the can, try the one in the main lobby of the Marquis Hotel. The lobby is actually about five or six floors up (by escalator). There's a bar there; a magazine shop; and very clean. hassle-free facilities.
I went to www.clicksmilies.com and they came from one of the random German sites that pop up as an ad.  When you click on any link in the new window, it starts to download something which kind of freaks me out so I always cancel it.  Those two images were on the page so I just saved the .gif files to my computer individually.  I posted them as attachments on the tech board and then used the <img>link</img> function to link to those tech board messages.  Does that make sense?  Was that TMI?  (Too Much Information in Internet lingo)
I do not really car for Mikado but can nevertheless, highly recommend the wonderful film "Topsy Turvy". (The quote at the bottom of my post just happens to be about me age and seems appropriate - despite its author).
Lines: I guess with would usually call them queues here. Airport security I would rather have them than  look at the alternative! People in London are the best line (queue) people. Not impatient at all. Worst line people I have seen have been at Central Station NYC.
Jose---
I think they are doing it at most theatres.  They announce it from the stage and on the way out they have people by the door handing out letters.  There is a cover letter from The League of American Theatres and Producers and an actual letter from a kid.  You mail the gift direct to the kid who wrote the letter and use Santa c/o the League address as a return address.  One reason we are getting a gift certificate is that it is a lot easier to mail and this way he can pick out the gift himself.  By the way, which one of your students in in Urinetown?
Holiday madness at the office continues.  After writing out Xmas bonuses for everyone else all week I finally found out how much to write for me and it was (a) more than I expected and (b) a lot more than last year.  It comes to about 10% of my annual salary... before Uncle Sam gets his cut.  In the words of Sister Bertrille: "They like me, they really like me".  Plus I got a turkey and a bottle of Vodka from the company, 2 bottles of wine from the Union rep I deal with and a booklet with a lot of nice gifts to choose from on line from one of our suppliers.  And there is still a week left.
DR Maya - That is a great article.  I'm gonna go ahead and print it out and pass it around at the theatre tonight.
DR DiT - I, too, use the Marquis facilities when I'm in Times Square.  However, beware of the pre-theatre period.  The wait for the elevator can be long - now that's a line I hate to stand in, although at the Marquis there's no real line for the elevator, it's more like every man, woman and child for themselves!  *And they are also in the middle of "upgrading" their elevators right now - at least they were when I was up there in mid-September.  They posted these large signs encouraging patrons to use the escalators as much as possible since, at times, half of the elevators would be out of service during the upgrade period.  And I even think there was a mention of wait times up to half an hour - ???  I also use the bathrooms in the Edison - although, it just depends who's working the desk at the time, since you have to be buzzed in, and they're supposed to be for hotel guests only.  But the door is usually propped open - at least the men's one is, don't know about the women's.  But even when I've gotten buzzed in, no one at the desk has ever given me a dirty look.
OH, and as to what character I would come as...  I'll have to think more about that one.
Oh, and Tomovoz, where are you?  Hope all is well with you and Colin.
Getting back to those turtle doves, one has only to apply some basic genetics to get the following:
If papa turtle dove and mama turtle dove have four eggs that hatch, the odds support that they should have one full-fledged turtle, one full-fledged dove, one turtle dove, and one dove turtle.
That's assuming that we're starting with one turtle dove of each sex.
On the other hand, if they're both male turtle doves, they'll either spend their time together watching football, or (alternatively) go shopping.  Hopefully they'll be the alternative, because two male turtle doves watching football tend to get sloppy with the beer and pretzels.  Two female turtle doves, on the other hand, will either go shopping or, alternatively, rebuild carborators together.
Tomorrow's three french hens are going to be in a lot of trouble if one of them has mono.
MBarnum: I sometimes forget you are not the theatre addict that some of us are.  You can see a pic of the Wicked cd, in DR Jason's bottom left corner.
Wicked is a new Broadway musical, starring Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel (not sure if you know who they are).  The music is by Stephen Schwartz.  It is related to the story of the Wizard of OZ. It's the story of the witches Glinda and Elphaba.
I get sad when I look at Jason's pic, cause it just reminds me that my copy from amazon.ca is so NOT HERE and delayed :(
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000TB01Y/qid=1071698903/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/103-6697415-0740631
Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz.
So many interesting questions today!
Favorite quiz shows:  Jeopardy and Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
Lines:  I despise airport security lines.  I hate the fact they are necessary.  I hate that they are so long.  I hate that they are invasive and demeaning.  I hate that you have to remove your shoes whilst trying to keep an eye on the items you've placed on the belt for X-ray.
More on lines:  When I was in high school and college in New York, I was a regular on the Saturday morning line to purchase standing room tickets for the upcoming week at the Metropolitan Opera.  There were quite a few "character" regulars, as well as some very nice fellow opera fanatics.
Yet more on lines:  People enjoy being in the supermarket while I am there, because they know that whichever I line I select for myself is  the slowest moving one and therefore know which one to avoid.
Regarding G&S:  Every time I've heard G&S, I've enjoyed it, but, for whatever reason, I have not pursued the G&S oeuvre the way I have other varieties of music.
Just checked in and noticed that DR Jed's "Dad" is with us. Hope you are feeling at least a little better.
Everyone in my little house is so GORGEOUS right now. Abie (dog) had a bath, the car was washed and I just came back from having my hair highlighted and trimmed for an outrageous price. All this beauty is being wasted, however, as I have no evening plans (nor does Abie) -- I may just stare at myself in the mirror for the next few hours. Sound like a plan?
G&S - I've never been a huge fan, but I was engaged for a while to a man who was a lyricist. He did an updated MIKADO (I think) at Stratford and got me to actually like G&S. I broke off the engagement after a time and went back to not being a huge G&S fan. But I did like the movie a few years ago. Can't remember the title... I have to eat lunch now. Didn't get a chance earlier as I was being made stunning by Julian the Bulgarian Master Colorist.
(That's what it says on his card - not the Bulgarian  part.)
BTW - I was re-reading Benjamin Kritzer as I waited for the highlights to take. Pretty decent book.
Ron, if you click the "Home" button at the top of each page, you'll see all the different topics and the total number of posts for each top.  From their you would click the "Daily Discussions" button for each day's topics.
Got it!  Thanks, George!
I haven't gotten through all of the posts yet, but I thought I had better start answering some of the questions, before I forgot them completely.
First, thanks to all of you who wished me a speedy recovery.  I stayed in bed for most of the day, except for potty breaks, but, so far, no improvement.  Still, I am going to try and go back to work tomorrow.
Lines I hate: Grocery lines when the clerks don’t enforce the ten or twelve item rule, or when the person ahead of me doesn’t bother to take out their check book until the clerk totals their bill. Aaaaargh!
Favorite game shows: I’ve Got A Secret and What’s My Line, but never To Tell the Truth.  I loved Arlene Francis and Bill Cullen, and yes, even Dorothy Kilgallen.  As for today’s game shows, I like Jeopardy, Pyramid, and Millionaire.
I was never a G & S fan, or didn’t think I was, until Pirates opened on Broadway in 1979 or 1980.  Seeing Kevin Kline (woof!) Rex Smith, Linda Ronstadt, and the rest of the cast of that show gave me an entirely different appreciation for their shows
I wouldn't go to the costume party as any character from a musical, because I hate costume parties, so I would have stayed home.
Lines - Blech.  Unless of course it's at a theater, those lines I can handle.  With the right incentive, a line at a kissing booth may be livable, too.
G&S - Very glad that DR Noel mentioned Trial by Jury, which is definitely my favorite.  Of course, it's probably only my favorite because I've been in it twice (high school and college).  I do also enjoy Pirates... if done well.
Emily - Congrats for being done done done with exams!  I'll gladly join you in your celebration dance (if TD doesn't mind my cutting in :) ).  Me thinks DR Ann is done done done as well.
Congrads Emily
I still have one paper due for friday.
But I do have something to look foward to (besides New York with Maya, LC and Craig): Emily is going to allow me to take her shopping and dress her! Isn't that fab! She'll have a budget and she'll get to try on clothes, all day long!
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]FOUR EXAMS DOWN, ONE TO GO!!![/move]
By noon tomorrow, I am a free woman!
LOL, Dan!  That poor ballerina!
Jason--One of the schools I'm considering transferring to is Northern Kentucky University, cause I hear they have a great musical theatre program and they're fairly inexpensive for an out of state school.  Charles Pogue said it was a good school...do you have any info on it?
BK, I think you would make a great Cassie!  Personally, I think I would go as Lily Vanessi and look super glam.
It's funny you guys mentioned Christopher Meloni...just the other day a friend of mine was raving about how hot he is on SVU, a show I don't watch.  I don't really care for crime shows, but for a guy, that sexy I might be persuaded.
I'm not much of a G&H person admittedly but I like Pirates of Penzance.  And my favorite game shows are Jeopardy, Hollywood Squares and re-runs of the Match Game.
Btw, is it common in the US to pay for groceries with a cheque? I think it is allowed here. But most people pay by credit card (which i normally do) or interac.
I saw Girl With A Pearl Earring this evening, Dear Readers.
I must first tell you my relationship with Vermeer.  Every time I visited the Frick collection in New York, I was always mesmerized by the Vermeer paintings to be found there.  There is one in particular, in the main gallery, which depicts a maid looking concernedly at a lady (in a yellow dress, and this has nothing to do with Contact) as she reads a letter.  I cannot tell you how many hours (cumulatively) I have spent in front of that painting, but I can tell you it is many.  I have pondered what moment in what scenario was being depicted in that painting, and created a number of different narratives in my mind in which that moment captured in oil would be a key point in the story.
So I was very pleased (and not a little jealous) when the novel Girl With A Pearl Earring came out a few years ago, and looked forward with great anticipation to the movie version of the book.
The film is beautiful to look at.  The cinematography is superb, the lighting particularly so.  Each actor is excellent in his/her role.  Colin Firth (be still my heart) and Tom Wilkinson both fill their parts admirably.  I can envision Judy Parfitt pulling a Judi Dench at Oscar time for her effort as Vermeer's mother-in-law.  As for Scarlett Johanson, it seems the less dialogue she has, the more effective she is.  This was true in Lost in Translation, and is true in Girl, as some of her strongest scenes do not contain a word.  It will be interesting to see if Miss Johanson is simply flavor of the month, or if she can sustain her art and visibility and become one of the major actresses of our future.  I am hoping the latter is the case.
DR Andrea - Thanks for cheering me on, but I think I'll stay in and study for my CA written Driver's Test (which I have to take as I've just moved here from CO). It would be just too embarrassing to fail, but I have no idea of what the CA rules of the road are. (Other than drive FAST!)
DR Panni, I guess the movie you're referring to is TOPSY-TURVY. Lots of people loved it. I didn't.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't TRIAL BY JURY only a Sullivan piece and not a Gilbert and Sullivan?
Back from my first Christmas dinner/party of the season (another Saturday), and I got quite a few nice DVDs as gifts including GIANT, PRIZZI'S HONOR, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, ONE TWO THREE, and THE SONG OF BERNADETTE. I'll look foward to watching them soon. (Of course, I'm still plugging away at HATARI which has at least another half hour to do. My lord, that is one LOOOOOOOOONG movie for the story it was telling. Should have been at least 30 minutes shorter.)
Dan-in-Toronto - the best jam for the Ibi recipe is the Globus brand, which used to be available in Toronto, maybe still is. It's from somewhere in Eastern Europe. That's the kind my mother always used. Of course, other brands will do fine.
You do that and you'll be the only person to signal before turning--regardless of distance--in the entire state.
Character in a musical for a costume party?  These days, I could do a passable Mayor Shinn.
Der Brucer wants to know if there's been a musical version of The Lion in Winter, so he can come as Henry.
Two batches of cookies made today: a batch of those chocolate cookes, and a batch of Toll House, with chocolate chips and rolled oats!  Yummilicious, and they help you stay regular at the same time!
Panni, I highly recomment that you enroll in Miss Emily's School of Tarts, at once.  It is the most prestigious finishing school for tarts, flirts, and coquettes.  Excellent training....Andrea is always at the head of the class.  ;)
Jay--thank you for the Girl With a Pearl Earring review.  That film is definitely on my must-see list right now.  Scarlett Johanssen is awesome.
Good evening.
Good show.  OH, and we collected - well, the very generous audience donated over $2,500 dollars for our holiday fundraising drive.  That's a great "take" - especially for a theatre that only holds 800 people, and for a Tuesday night!  Let's hope the "spirit" continues throughout the week.  We're off tomorrow, so I headed back to Richmond tonight... nice to be back in my very comfortable bed again!
Well, that's all for me right now.  I need to get some sleep - I want to have another long day tomorrow, which means not sleeping in until 11:30 again...
Bonne nuit!
Oh, DR SWW - EEEEEWWWW!!!!!
