Well, you've read the notes, the notes contained pertinent information, which you now are in possession of, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they were in possession of Alice B. Toklas brownies and they're currently in jail.

The quodlibet is a rodent the size of a small kangaroo.  It is an endangered species living only on a fe small islands off the coast of western Australia.
I could be wrong.

DP recommended recently that we watch a favourite film from his youth - "The Young Lions".  It was so bad bad bad.

My revisiting "The Tenant" was a disappoinment also.

ARABESQUE....I think I was MOST disappointed because I expected CHARADE....

Rehearsal was okay last night....we have a great script/story....some so-so performers and a bit of chaos....and three rehearsals.  Missing people last night, so when we did the final set change, one of the lawyers' tables was left out in the Finch's front yard.....

I am a bit put-off that Atticus doesn't seem capable of learning his responses to me in my last scene....the one in which I describe the killing of Bob Euell and what I plan to do about it....  And of course afterwards he says, "Boy WE need to work on that scene...."  Yes WE do!

We didn't see the Natalie Wood stamped rear yesterday, perhaps today.

TOD:

ICE STATION ZEBRA....loved it in Cinerama....pretty much a snooze fest now, even though I bought the DVD.

DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS - scared me when I was little, another talk talk talk movie....

THE GRADUATE - thought it WAS great, now not so much.

Good morning!

It was overcast but very muggy when I got up, but the clouds are opening up a bit, and that hot, hot sun is shining down. It's going to be a pretty miserable day temperature and humidity wise. Glad for those who have a holiday and want to spend it outside, but I'll be inside for the entire day.

I have no film picked out to watch today, so it may just be THE CLOSER all the time!

WOD:  I actually talk about "Quodlibets" when I perform with one of the choirs I direct and we do an Irving Berlin medley.  Berlin loved quodlibets (don't tell Mrs. Berlin).  ;)

Happy Belated Birthday to MattH, my personal HD guru.  :)

HD is great--I wish DirecTV had more HD options, like Dish Network.  I had a series of defective tuners, plus I found out that the Sharp Aquos interfaces with the DirecTV tuner in a kind of strange way, but the upshot is I ended up getting 4 free months of the HD package (such as it is), 6 months of a $5 credit, plus 3 months of Starz and 4 months of Showtime, so I can't complain.

Good morning, all!  I've had a severe mental lapse this morning.  I've  been thinking for the last several hours that I've already been to HHW this morning, and I haven't!  Ohmigod, dementia is setting in.

I'm having a quiet morning of encroaching senility and enjoying myself immensely.  I need to go out and do some shopping, and beyond that I have absolutely no plans today.

What happened to Steve Irwin?

TOD:
The Disney BABES IN TOYLAND, which I loved at age 14 and now consider a disastrous melange operetta, musical, screenplay, and  cast.

I'm hoping that PRETTY POISON, which I just ordered, holds up.

The Lovely Wife and I, when we were dating in college, went to see WHERE'S POPPA, Carl Reiner's first film as director.  At the time, we thought it just hilarious...so hilarious, in fact, we kidnapped my parents and took them to see it the following night (and by this time, they rarely...if ever...went to movies).

We saw it a few years back on TV and it was just spectacularly unfunny.  We couldn't see any trace of what we had found so funny long ago.

As a kid, I absolutely LOVED the Jerry Lewis movies - thought they were the most hilarious films, laughed and laughed. Not enough caffeine yet for actually coming up with titles... oh, The Bellboy is one.... Anyway, I was totally in love with Jerry Lewis. As an adult, watching them I don't find them quite so funny - some seem incredibly lame and un-funny; however, I see spectacularly wonderful physical stuff I never appreciated when I was a wee bairn. The choreography of some of the bits is astonishing.

So, yesterday was the final Wood Cutting day of the three day fest. The three neighbors' families/friends were all up here in the forest for the weekend. We finally got to the pile of thirty or so trees that have been lying on my driveway since I moved in 6 years ago. The neighbors up above say it was at least ten years more. Chainsaws first, to cut them into rounds. Some hand-splitting, but most were split on the gigantic power splitter. Next-door neighbor's wife almost lost a finger - the shreik was earsplitting. Probably only broke it and will surely lose the nail.

I stacked wood in my shed - to the rafters. Then we filled truck beds and carts and drove them to neighbors' sheds. I could hardly walk, let alone stand up by evening. Everyone - like, fourteen people - working non-stop from 10 ayem to dark. But we got it done!!! Guy with the splitter has been threatening to do this for 5 years. I'm glad to have those logs GONE! There is now a dandy place for a little garage for my car!

And this is the final week of my annual summer sojourn. I leave next Sunday morning - I will hate leaving. What a lovely place. But I'll be back every 6 or 8 weeks through the winter... Oh, it's after 9... gotta get back out there to shovel bark into the wheelbarrow a few hundred times, and roll it over to the compost pile (now more of a compost mountain...). Cut back the daylilies and iris, too - or face a slimy mess next May. Like the squirrels and chipmunks - just SO busy these last few days of the season.

And the word of the day is:  QUODLIBET!
The four emancipated singing nuns (Sisters Margaretta, Berthe, Sophia, and Mary Amnesia) were best known for their specialty QUODLIBET, "Agnes Sing the Agnus Dei", which started as a Gregorian Chant, the BOLD QUIET of the opening suddenly broken by a middle section where they QUOTED LIB doctrine, and finished by a du-wop repeat of the first section, this time in four-part harmony and Pig Latin.

Labor Day greetings!  We're staying home today - maybe this evening we'll go over to the nearby park for a concert by the Southwest Ohio Symphonic Band.

TOD (slightly tweaked):  It's been interesting to have our son watch movies that DH Richard and I consider among our favorites.  We'd raved about things like The Big Chill and Fargo and, when he was finally old enough to watch them, his reaction was quite indifferent.  The Big Chill just didn't "resonate" for a Millennial the way it does for us Boomers and he thought we were just plain weird for liking Fargo so much.  The generational disconnect works the other way, too, as he brings home things like Boondocks Saints and we just don't get it.

As for the TOD, I initially thought Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours 11 Minutes to be a total hoot.  I now find it a plodding effort.

Conversely, the similarly plotted The Great Race, which is sorta enjoyed as a youth, is now a film that I find not just one of the funniest ever made, but one that retains it's fun after repeated viewings.

Jane Connell tells a funny story of going to rent MAME at a NYC video store sometime in the 80s and the clerk telling her, "You don't want to watch that lousy thing. You want AUNTIE MAME with Rosalind Russell."

Athlete, politician, and actor Bob Mathias also passed away, on Saturday.

He starred in LAND OF THE MINOTAUR, CHINA DOLL, and IT HAPPENED IN ATHENS. And he appears on an episode of YOU BET YOUR LIFE on one of the recent DVD compilations of Groucho's show.

He and I had conversed about doing an interview several months ago, but he was to begin chemotherapy treatments and asked if we could put it off for awhile. I had actually just sent him a note via mail last week to see how he was doing. He sure seemed like a nice guy.

Snot, on the other hand, I have.  I can barely keep it abated...and the meds that abate it are for symptoms I no longer have, so it seems to be a bit of overkill to use them now.

Seems to be a day to report deaths. When my mother was a young woman,in the 1930's she and her sister were huge fans of a romantic young poet in Hungary - Gyorgy Faludy....
When I eventually wound up in Toronto, I had the honor of becoming friends with the expatriate poet George Faludy! A number of his fellow prison inmates (poitical prisoners) had also wound up in Toronto. We spent many incredible nights filled with Hungarian conversation, poetry and wine with these remarkable men and women. George at that time was living with a devoted (male) partner. In his younger days he was THE poet of love in Hungary, with young women hanging on his every word (and other areas, I'm sure). He wrote famous love poems to his wife and other lovers (of both sexes, I believe). He wound up his life in Hungary with a gorgeous (Playboy gorgeous) young wife -- I mean YOUNG. A great poet, a larger than life person. He died in Budapest on Saturday. His life was the stuff of drama - many dramas.

An Obit (excerpted):

Hungarian poet Gyorgy Faludy dies aged 95

By Sandor Peto

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungarian poet Gyorgy Faludy, a legend of resistance to the rise of Nazism and Communism, died at the age of 95 at his home in Budapest, national news agency MTI said on Saturday.
The poet, known to many in the West as George Faludy, played a role in Hungary's 1956 anti-communist uprising and would have been a key speaker at a conference to celebrate its 50th anniversary later this month.

Faludy won international fame with his interpretation of Francois Villon ballads in the 1930s and his autobiographical novel "My Happy Days in Hell" in the 1960s, which related his escape from fascist Hungary and his return, and imprisonment, in a country under communist rule.

He fled Hungary twice: first in 1938, when as a Jew he was threatened by the growing power of Nazism, and the second time after Soviet tanks crushed the 1956 uprising.

Like fellow-Hungarian anti-communist writer Arthur Koestler, Faludy wandered the world, living in France, Algeria, the United States, the United Kingdom and Italy.

Toronto, where the poet, a former nominee for the Nobel prize for literature, lived for over 20 years, will inaugurate a George Faludy Park near the poet's former home on October 3.

Faludy returned to Hungary the second time at the end of the 1980s, following the collapse of communism in central Europe.
He lived in central Budapest with third wife Fanny Faludy-Kovacs, more than 60 years his junior, until his death on Friday.

His face framed by long grey hair often appeared on Hungarian television screens as a symbol of a country leaving behind a century of dictatorships and entering a new era as a European Union member.

"My aunt cut her neck with a razor blade. The rest died in the war in gas chambers. My sister floats upon the icy Danube," he wrote in one of his poems about the horrors of the 1940s.

After returning to Hungary following the Second World War, he was sent by the country's new communist government to a concentration camp in Recsk in 1949 for three years.
In the camp where many people were killed and tortured, Faludy organised literature courses to keep up the spirits of the prisoners.

In "My Happy Days in Hell", he recounts writing a poem in blood on toilet paper with a straw pulled out from a broom.

"He lived everywhere, met everybody and was ousted from everywhere," the invitation for the celebrations of Faludy's 95th birthday last year said, MTI reported.

And this is the final week of my annual summer sojourn. I leave next Sunday morning - I will hate leaving. What a lovely place. But I'll be back every 6 or 8 weeks through the winter... I have become like the migratory birds - head south at the first scent of autumn and return when the primroses blossom. Such a bittersweet season, autumn is...

Yes, it is a bittersweet season and you have elegantly stated that Penny.

Although it is very sad about Mr. Irwin's death, it is certainly a very rare accident.  I have no regrets about swimming with the stingrays, while I was in the Caribbean; and I would certainly not hesitate to do it again the next time I am in Grand Cayman.

I also hope this story won't keep DRs Jed and Ann from swimming with them either.

I have been laughing, crying, and enjoying the reruns of THE CLOSER that I've watched today. Included in these were the season premiere that dealt with the death of a police officer and the two terrific episodes featuring Frances Sternhagen as Brenda's mother. Very easy to believe they are mother and daughter.

Lewis and Clark are stopping by at the riverfront on their way back to St Louis.  I don't think there will be many visiting the encampment. I just haven't heard much about it.  I was a docent at the Lewis and Clark center when they came through 2 years ago, so I may have to stop by and say hello.

I have heard about it. I apologize in being remiss in not mentioning it. I am sorry.

Yes, it is a bittersweet season and you have elegantly stated that Penny.

How interesting. Fall is my very favorite season. It's when I think of the excitement of going back to school, cool nights at the football games, the beauty of the changing leaves, being able to be outside without bugs! It's when I come back to life after the horrible heat of summer.

Of course I like winter better than summer, so there you go... to each his own, but I love the cool brisk air, fresh apples, pumpkin seeds, oh my, there are so many things I love about fall.....

Which reminds me, it's time to start cooking some home made applesauce to go with my pork chops tonight

You heard they were in Sioux City this weekend?  Hmm.. Anyway, it was pretty much a bust. Not much there, they have the same boats they had on the return trip, but there really wasn't much going on that we didn't do last time they were here. So I took some photos and left.

Had a quick work session with Kevin - we went to Hugo's at 12:15 and it was an hour wait.  I will now never set foot in that restaurant again.  We went to CPK and it was empty.  Normally, CPK is full.  Go know.  It seems that the "hip" factor has now moved over to Hugo's.  Can't go to ANY other restaurant.  Of course, what these people are doing there at 12:15 is anyone's guess.

Regarding the word of the day:  The opening number of Skip's score for TIME AND AGAIN at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre (is it really 10 years now?) was called "Quodlibet."

Interestingly, some people were confused because they assumed that title for the number meant it had to have four parts.

You chose a NATIONAL CHAIN restaurant over something local?  Talk about horseracing.

Given the choice, der Brucer and I will always go local over chain.  Of course, our breakfast choice (after a puppy-sitting visit with Tinker, Magic Mommy's rat terrier, who has been locked in their trailer while they went down to Ocean City) was between the Crystal Cafe, very local and highly loved, and the local IHOP.  Just the thought of the chain breakfast option is nausiating.

Me?  I had the shrimp and crabmeat omlette with home fried taters, and a nice cup of grits.  Der Brucer had eggs over easy, scrapple, and an equally nice cup of grits.  Try finding that at IHOP.

Very pleasurable.

The Lovely Wife and I, when we were dating in college, went to see WHERE'S POPPA, Carl Reiner's first film as director.  At the time, we thought it just hilarious...

We saw it a few years back on TV and it was just spectacularly unfunny.  We couldn't see any trace of what we had found so funny long ago.

Periodically I think I should rent this, hysterically funny, movie and watch it again.  I think I will just keep my funny memories & not watch it again.  :)

While Bryan’s girlfriend towers over me, Craig’s is too short to be a model.

Craig would occasionally dress Echo in his clothing.  It seems he is continuing the tradition with Yogi.  I guess Yogi didn’t get to wear his boxers, as Echo did, since Craig only has a washing machine (& grateful to have that), not a dryer.  Hanging clothes around their little apartment, and I mean little, isn’t easy.

The season finale of THE CLOSER is most intriguing.  I missed so much of this season through my treks to Ohio that I had a good time puttering about the house today and occasionally giving the reruns a bit of attention.  I missed the first four so I'm stil uninformed on them.  I can't wait for Season 2 on sale.

Also, what is with the morons who do the previews?  We already know - halfway through the program - who will be missing at the end of this episode (I think).  I hope I'm wrong, but tv personnel are damn dumb sometimes!

I made a discovery tonight……

So did I, DR Jane.  Instead of going to the concert in the park, I stayed home and watched a DVD from Netflix - Eileen Heckart's Academy Award winning performance in Butterflies are Free.  I knew I'd seen it on stage sometime, so I went through my big box o' programs and - voila! - there was one from The University of Michigan's Professional Theatre Program, dated December 9-11, 1971.  I may have seen this show on my 21st birthday and the role of Don Baker was played by John Spencer, whose final triumph was as Leo McGarry on The West Wing.

PS - I hope you're feeling better.

The packing up of stuff with my parents was quite the trauma...for me. ::) My mom was very much a terror ;) but we got quite a bit done.  I still have some things in my bedroom to pack up but she wants me to go through all my clothes and give her everything that I don't want.  She'll wash them and give them to Goodwill.  Most of what I don't want to keep (or no longer fit in) is still wearable, but I already did get rid of a couple of pairs of jeans that had holes worn in them.  I kept having to say "Don't throw that away!" and "Don't pack that away, I need it!"  But I was able to take a load to the storage unit.  So that's it for the packing for today.

We actually stopped packing at about 3:00 or so, when I took the boxes that I had to the storage unit.  After that, we all went to my sister's house and had a barbecue.  Hamburgers, bratwurst, salmon burgers, salads, lots of stuff.  And for dessert, a pineapple-lemon cake that was very good!  My sister got the recipe from "The Cake Mix Doctor" cookbook.  Now, I'm at home. :)

George, I feel for you.  When I sold my house at the lake, I went through every box and all the clothes and gave away a lot. I hadn't lived there for 4 years and it had a lot of stuff just stored there, so that wasn't too hard.  It was impossible when I moved into this house from my other Sioux City house.  I just couldn't make those decisions....

Cilla, lovely photo of Boo. She's a beauty.

Jane, what a nice son, daughter-in-law (whether official or not), and dog-in-law you have! I just love Yogi's pointy party hat!

You heard they were in Sioux City this weekend?  Hmm.. Anyway, it was pretty much a bust. Not much there, they have the same boats they had on the return trip, but there really wasn't much going on that we didn't do last time they were here. So I took some photos and left.

YEs, it was on the SDLA/NDLA website...

When we were in Romania a puppy was left at the entrance to Craig’s apartment building.

Yogi’s first birthday party.

What a sweet looking dog...

What a wonderful idea... Happy Birthday Yogi!!

Just like DR Jane eating the almonds and See's, I ate three brownies that I made today, and I paid for it this afternoon. Felt really ill all afternoon long. My body just can't take a sugar high like that any more.

I'll be much more sparing in my sweets intake for the next few days until they're gone.

I made a discovery tonight…….If you pop a Jordon almond in your mouth, not just any Jordon almond but the special ones I buy in Portland, and then pop in a See’s milk chocolate ball…..you can’t eat just one, or two, or five ;D

Now I feel sick & have a headache.   :o

I think I should move around a bit & work off some of this sugar.

'night.

Yep, it is wicked!! but oh so goooood!!

DR George - I went several years ago to hear a presentation by The Cake Mix Doctor at a local bookstore.  She had recruited some local bakers to make up some of her recipes and we all had samples.  She got very indignent when I asked if she'd ever learned as much from things that didn't work as she learned from things that did.

Indignent??  You'd think that her answer would be a very quick, "Hell, yes!" ;)

I really try to avoid every preview on every channel of upcoming shows if I possibly can, and if I'm sitting there waiting for a show to come on and they feature a preview of it minutes before the show starts (TNT is really bad about this), I cover my ears and lower my eyes for a few seconds.

The peanut butter pie is very rich, I would suggest smaller pieces than you may normally serve....there can always be seconds!

I can vouch for that, except I ate a big piece and put up with the stomachache. It's really, really good...if you like peanut butter.

I pulled out a tape of a local production of A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRANE tonight and watched it. I auditioned for this show and didn't get it, but the fellow who got Chico thoughtfully gave me a copy of the show (one of my favorite shows) because at the time, I was so upset and disappointed that I couldn't see the show. I finally put the tape in tonight and watched it.

I had recorded the sixth episode of THE CLOSER this afternoon and watched it right before the season finale came on. Excellent episode (the one about the porno star with HIV).

As for the season finale, I was able to spot the murderer very early on, but the episode still proved intriguing with Brenda's endearing search and worry for Kitty and the entertaining one upmanship between the LAPD and the FBI.

The MEDIUM rerun was the one that featured Kelsey Grammer as the Angel of Death. Up until the last five minutes, it was a fascinating episode. I still think the ending was far too pat for my taste.

The reason I did not eat dessert at the partay (and there were plenty) is that there were so many flies in the house where the desserts were that I described the apple pie as Pie a la Fly.

Maybe it was supposed to be Shoo-Fly Pie!

Dear Esteemed and partayed-out BK and H/Ks --

DP Kerry and I had a nice lazy day, went to an afternoon movie, caught up with an old friend not seen for a long time, and now it is time for the wonderful Sleep Number bed !!

And I agree very much with not passing up the chance to swim with the manta rays down around Grand Cayman.  Kerry and I did that some years back, and it was a very magical experience!

Finding anything interesting in your sorting and packing George?

I posted this last week, but I found the 1995 tour cast recording of Camelot that I got when the tour came to Olympia.  There are still a couple of other CDs that I want to find, but I haven't searched through all the boxes that had never been unpacked when I moved into where I'm living now...the plan (as always ;)) is to go through everything after I move.

I've had a lovely weekend of DVD watching. Saw Malle's ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS - which I've never seen before. Loved it. (And the Miles Davis score! Wow!) Already posted about SKETCHES OF FRANK GEHRY. Which is as much about the creative process as it is about Gehry (real name Goldberg - born in Toronto). Also saw Chabrol's BETTY - I'm a big Chabrol fan. And THE APARTMENT (not Wilder) - which is terrific - except for the fact that for some reason the subtitles are for the hearing-impaired. So not only do you get the dialogue, but also "Soft knocking" or "Phone ringing." Strange!
Still have one more movie to watch. May or may not.
