Title: THE STRING THEORY OR THE BIG SHEEP
Post by: bk on September 10, 2006, 12:18:02 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you can now explain The String Theory, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to find The Big Sheep, for reasons they won't say.

And now - Dino at the piano.

This is weird!  On the main page (http://www.haineshisway.com/community/index.php) under "HHW Community Forum - Info Center," it lists Calendar Today and under that is "Birthdays: Donna."  You can click on her name and go to her profile.

HOWEVER, below that is the "Todays Birthdays" heading and then it says "Birthdays" then "Join us in wishing a happy birthday to Donna" and when you click on her name there, you get (well, I got) this message:

An Error Has Occurred!
The user whose profile you are trying to view does not exist. -- Donna

What gives??

I have to work concessions again today at noon for another performance of "Wrinkles of Washington."   Yesterday's concession selling went well, except that I (as one of the new volunteer head concessionaires ::)) didn't make more coffee during the first act for the intermission! :o We ran out of regular coffee. :P We also ran out of cookies, but that was because we couldn't put them all out since they had three more performances to get through and they wanted to at least have a certain amount for each performance.  For today, however, I'll make enough coffee.  Since it's donated, it doesn't matter (too much) if I make too much. ;)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY FELICITATIONS TO DR DONNA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[/move]
I have to be at Toyland early today, hence my getting up at 6:30 AM:  Josh Clayton, the MD for Brad Ross' LITTLE BY LITTLE, is coming by for the band parts at 9 AM, Andy Monroe is coming by to drop off a new piece of music for THE TRAGIC & HORRIBLE . . ., and there will be hopefully waiting for me a ton of new scores for LADY OF THE SLIPPER.

I have no more to post and, God knows, nothing to say.

And the word of the day is: TAUROMACHY!
Senorita Margarita Alphonsa Carmen Electra Sophia del Quanto Quanto cluched her bosom and cried out "Oh, Senor Bullfighter, with your cleft chin and your sensuous thighs, you who have excited me so!  I THROW MY CHARM at you as you perform your TAUROMACHY!"  Sadly, her aim was a little too good, and her charm bracelet hit him directly between the eyes, stunning him and giving the bull the advantage.

Good morning!

I got up before 8 a.m. this morning and mowed my front lawn. I have an electric lawnmower which is much quieter than a gas mower, but I may have irritated a few neighbors. I guess I'll find out later.

It was just so cool this morning, and I needed to get it done. We're going to have hot, humid conditions later today, and I didn't want to mow in that kind of weather.

The conclusion of THIRD MAN OUT, then TWO FOR THE ROAD, and then probably WALLACE AND GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERERABBIT. That will more than likely be my lineup for today's viewing.

HBO is showing the broadcast premiere of FANTASTIC FOUR tonight. I know it got bad reviews, but I may give it a try (or record it for later). There is nothing else on TV tonight that I'm interested in.

I'm up, I'm up.

It's a new theremin, not one of the weird-looking old ones.  We'll probably build something to look like one of the weird-looking old ones, though, just for the prop.  The new theremin is a little wooden box with an antenna and it's played by moving the hand near and about the antenna.  They had sound samples on eBay and they were excellent.

Happy Birthday, DR Donna!

I'm still tasting the delicious flavors from last night's dinner party (and smiling at some of the conversation about string theory and the unnatural coupling of cute dogs and stuffed sheep.)

I was up at 5 AM this morning to get ready for my volunteer gig at the annual Ovarian Cancer Walk. Had to be there by 6:30 - but needed to get ready and walk and feed the hound before I left.
Registering the Walkers/Runners is, I think, more exhausting than walking. Big line-ups and lots of paperwork, taking money, credit cards, checks. One of these years I'll do the walk/run. TThe woman sitting at my table registering walkers lost her beautiful 20-year-old daughter to the disease just a few months ago. And there she was, doing work, busy, smiling. The abillity of people to endure and carry on is astonishing and humbling. There were dozens of people walking in her daughter's honor -- her photo and name pinned on their T-shirts.

One of the many strange topics that came up in the conversation last night was the fact that one of the Colonel's favorite places to eat in LA was Bob's Big Boy. Apparently he didn't much care for KFC.

I'm back from Toyland and watching the American Masters PBS broadcast on Leonard Bernstein:  the live footage of CANDIDE they're using is from the 1958 London production and must have been provided by the BBC.  I recognized Denis Quilley as Candide and Mary Costa as Cunegonde.  I wonder if there's a complete kinescope.  I want to see it all!

Well...after a lifetime of preparing and perfecting, and later hawking, fried chicken, I suppose he got tired of it.

Personally, I think KFC is not as good as it was back in the 60s and 70s.  It may be the way they raise the chickens...or perhaps they've changed something about the way they fry it.

But it's not quite as good as I used to find it.

Maria-When you walk it would be nice to join you.  The story of the woman who lost her young daughter is very moving.  When Bryan was 19 he lost a classmate friend to ovarian cancer.  It is especially shocking when it happens so young.  I’m sure your heart went out to her.

Jane, I just finished another great Arthurian Trilogy by Bernard Cornwell (author of the Sharpe series): The Winter King; The Enemy of God; and Excalibur.  I think I liked these better than Mists.  But both of these keep Arthur pagan, which works betters for me than when the Arthurian legend is layered with all that moralizing Christianity.

Ooh, I must go write about Bird's.

I ended up going back to the book fair - I just had one of those funny feelings I get sometimes.  And boy did it pay off.  There was a dealer there - mainly autographs with just a handful of uninteresting books.  No one was perusing anything at his booth, yesterday or today.  I happened to wander over to the handful of books, to check out a Brit edition of Devil Of A State by Anthony Burgess, just to see how it compared to mine own and to see the price.  My eye happened to go to the shelf next to said books and there was a small sign that said "proofs".  I reached over and looked at the first one on the pile.  It was from 1935 and the front said that the book was by Humphrey Cobb and it was untitled.  They'd done up some of these proof copies and were going to award $50 to whomever came up with the perfect title.  I turned to the title page and sure enough it said "A Novel by Humphrey Cobb - As Yet Untitled".

Now, Mr. Cobb only wrote one novel and it was turned into a very well known film, both novel and film being titled Paths of Glory.  The book, for whatever reasons, has never gone for much money - primo copies can be had for between $100-200, and signed copies for a bit more.  I put the proof down and went and discussed it with a couple of dealer friends - I didn't tell them I'd found it, just asked if they'd seen it.  Both these guys are very knowledgeable dealers in that sort of book and neither of them had ever seen an advance proof in this early untitled state.  One of them had seen an Advance Readers Copy with a jacket laid over the paper cover.   They were both basically salivating over even the thought of it.  I went back and bought it (the dealer gave me twenty percent off, and it wasn't too much money).  I then showed it to the two dealers, who were just drooling.  They weren't crass enough to offer me more than I paid, but I know I'll be hearing from at least one of them about it.  As I was wandering around, the story got passed on to several dealers and suddenly this book was the talk of the show, and I was showing it to everyone and everyone was oohing and aahing.  One dealer told me that this rather well-known Internet dealer would put no less than $2,500 on it.  Since I didn't even pay ten percent of that figure, you can imagine how proud of myself I was for that little discovery.  The guy had other terrific proofs of some pricey books, but I didn't get greedy - he had the proof of A Fan's Notes and The Sterile Cuckoo, both very rare books.

I don't know how other folks feel, but Rodzinski and I have been discussing how much more we cared about the participants last season.  Both in terms of who they were and also their talent as designers.  By this time last season, we felt truly sad to see each of them go.  And as crazy as Santino made us, we did at least have his hilarious Tim impression.  And he never seemed to be as intentionally cruel as Jeffrey.  I don't feel that way about most of them this time around.  I like Michael, I'm curious to see what his runway show would look like.  I like Laura and most of what she creates, and can appreciate her sass.  But everyone else I could pretty much take or leave.

TPunk, that's a lovely picture!

The problem is that anytime you try and modify a .jpg, it's going to get a little distorted.  The dimentions for HHW avatars need to be 110 pixels wide by 150 pixels high.  The kilobyte size isn't really a factor (since it's so small, anyway), but it's the actual width and hight that you need to figure out.  So, here is your picture in the correct ratio (hopefully it looks good enough to use):

This is kind of ugly, isn't it?  The errant and truant will have some splainin' to do, and they're going to be bitch-slapped from here to eternity and hell and back should we achieve a new all-time low, which it certainly seems we're on our way to doing, and without so much as a too many connections to use as an excuse.

Back after training someone to take over one of the websites I've been maintaining for our local AAUW branch - glad to get that off my plate!

I also went grocery shopping and discovered that Sunday evening is an awful time to do that - they were out of several things that are staples in our house.

Welcome back to DR TPunk - first day on the new job vibes to  you for tomorrow!  PS - I like your new avatar, blurry or not  ;)

We, too, went grocery shopping (Anthony and I) but we went at 9am. We decided to go to Trader Joe's because we hadn't been in a while and I wanted some Cinnamon Cranberry Dunkers and dark chocolate covered raisins. We got both along with some good food at good prices. We have dinner covered for the next few days. I did have to go to Associated later to get some things that were not at TJs, like baking potatoes (why did they not have baking potatoes) and some Lean Cuisine frozen dinners for those nights when we need a quick and easy dinner.

Welcome back TP (not TJ). Ant was surprised and pleased to see you in class on Saturday.

Best wishes on the new job. They are a lucky bunch of kids to be getting someone as good as you.

After all that I forgot to mention how crowded it was at Trader Joe's. Even the staff mentioned it. At 9am when they open there are usually maybe 10 people waiting. Today there were about 25-30. The store wasn't extremely crowded, like in the afternoon, but at 9am you're not expecting to be in a small mob scene with people who stop to browse over food while standing in the aisle next to a post which means you can't get by. When we said "excuse us, please" he looked annoyed as if we were interrupting his shopping experience. Hey, this is NY buddy, learn how to move or stay home  ;)

I'm really disgusted. Our CBS station isn't playing 911 - the one with the French film makers narrated by Robert DeNiro because there are some bad words in it that could offend.   OH please. I've seen it, and it really isn't that I wanted to see it again, but I can't stand this sort of censorship.  If a parent is letting their kid watch the movie 911. Hearing a bad word certainly isn't going to keep them up at night or corrupt their morals.

I sent a strongly worded email expressing my disgust.

End of rant for the day....

We also have dear friends from Nottingham coming in on Tuesday. They have just finished a tour of the Midwest. They went to Minnesota especially to go to the State Fair. They also met my family (scary). This was last Saturday over Labor Day weekend. A good time was had by all if reports ring true. They are back in Minneapolis tonight and they will tour Coon Rapids and Anoka, MN tomorrow with one of my sisters. I grew up in Coon Rapids and Garrison Keillor is from Anoka. Cath (our English friend) is a HUGE Prairie Home Companion fan and wants to tred the same streets as Garrison. There isn't too much to see in Coon Rapids although my sister will take them to our old house. No one lives there anymore (from my family anyway, an unrelated, unknown family lives there now) but Cath wants to see it. They will be in NYC on Tuesday afternoon and evening and part of Wednesday before they board the plane to go back to Gedling (outside of Nottingham). It will be a treat to see them. They begin the merry troupe of visitors. The week after Cath and Maurice we have Tom and Colin and then soon after that our Iowa, Ohio and Oregon group arrives. T'will be a busy month.

That was stupid of the affiliate... It is a disaster, what do they expect people who are shocked to say 'ah shucks". Human nature does not work that way. I applaud you writing your affiliate. The local NBC one is usually the subject of my emails from time to time as is the local newspaper.

I’ve just added them to my list of books to purchase, though at the rate I’m going I think it might take me a year to get through the first trilogy.

I like the Paganism in Mists-makes for an intriguing read.

I ended up taking the position offered at my old internship.  Tuesday will be my first official day at the office.  Tomorrow I'll be taking part in a day long orientation that's at a completely different location.  Sadly I'll only be getting 2 of my 4 original cases back.  One was hospitalized the weekend before I left and is now in a different program, the other is comfortably ensconced with another therapist.  It can be hard to "juggle" the cases and with one therapist leaving and 4 or 5 new interns coming aboard for the year they were limited in how they could assign my cases.  Fortunately though I'll still be able to see him around campus.

Couldn't get enough of Hepburn, so I put in THE NUN'S STORY and watched the whole thing. Impossible to imagine that due to BEN-HUR sweeping most of the awards that year (for color films), THE NUN'S STORY went home empty-handed.

Finally decided on my last movie of the evening, HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING. Hadn't watched this in a long time, and got infuriated early because it's another of those infernal MGM nonanamorphic transfers. I got the TV to scale it, and it looked fine, but not as super sharp as an enhanced transfer would have probably looked.

No stereo sound either so I programmed the receiver to apply Dolby Prologic IIx to give the sound some surround enhancement.

Good evening all. I'm a little bummed.  On my last 2 trips to New York I've splurged on a necklace from Tiffany's. Nothing totally extravagant, but extravagant for me.  Well I can't find either one of them. I could swear I remember moving them myself from the old house to this one and the rest of my jewelry is here.   I have looked and looked and it's driving me crazy.  So I could use some necklace finding vibes.  I really don't think anyone took them...I think I've stuck them somewhere where I'd remember them.

I haven't unpacked everything, but I thought I'd unpacked everything I brought over by hand.

 Baloney Is People!  (http://www.slashfood.com/2006/09/07/baloney-is-people)

Quote
A lot of people are uncomfortable eating meat that looks like part of an animal, so pre-packaged and process meats are popular. This lunch meat, however, must be one of more disturbing things to ever have been featured in the deli meat section of a grocery store. The problem isn't that it is 80% pork with coloring added to it, but that the coloring is added to make it look like a clown face. It is clearly intended to be appealing to children, it actually explains why some children are afraid of clowns. After all, if you discovered a face in your sandwich when you were in kindergarten, you would be traumatized, too. This meat might also be a factor in why some children become vegetarians.

At least soylent green didn't look like people.

If it was rubbery, it was clealy overcooked! Properly prepared lobster should almost melt in your mouth!

Question.... Anyone recognize the actor in the stripes? I swear I have seen him before but I cannot place him.

He reminds me of Danny de Vito.

He reminds me of Danny de Vito.

That is who he reminded me and other poeple on a Matt Ashford fan board thought also. Then we asked ourselves, would Danny be willing to do a soap and we did not think so.

He is almost the same height as Matt and that is another reason we ruled out DeVito. We noted that in another scene earlier.

Give me a few minutes on the actor... There is a picture in an earlier thread I can bring in...

Matt finished taping on the 18th August and they film three weeks ahead of airing. His last airday on DOOL is the 21st and I will be done with watching the show then. If Matt goes back i will go back but I do nto trust the show. They have destroyed the loyalty of the viewers and screwed Matt's fans way too many times.

I love shrimp scampi but I cant have that for it has too much butter and I need to lose weight due to doctors order.

Here's a recipe with no butter and about half the calories (467) of a buttery one:

 The Best Shrimp scampi! (http://seafood.allrecipes.com/az/bsltlyThBstShrimpScmpi.asp)

Quote
"Shrimp sauteed in olive oil, with a brandy sauce flavored with garlic shallots and oregano. Great served with a rice pilaf and salad!"

INGREDIENTS:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground
black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 1/2 pounds fresh shrimp,
shelled and deveined without
tails 1/2 cup olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 shallot, chopped
1/2 cup fresh parsley, minced
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano,
crushed
2 tablespoons white wine
2 tablespoons brandy

DIRECTIONS:
1. In a small bowl, combine flour, salt, pepper and cayenne
pepper. Mix thoroughly. Dredge shrimp in flour mixture.

2. In a large skillet, saute dredged shrimp in olive oil for 5 minutes over high heat. Toss shrimp often to prevent burning. Transfer shrimp with a slotted spoon to a serving dish, leaving the oil in the pan.

3. In the same pan, saute the garlic, shallot, parsley and oregano over medium heat for 3 minutes; stirring constantly. Spoon the mixture over the shrimp. Return pan to the heat. Preheat your broiler for medium heat.

4. Pour the wine and brandy into the skillet and ignite with a match or lighter. When the flames die down, stir to loosen any browned bits on the bottom of the skillet; pour over shrimp.

5. Place the serving dish of shrimp in a preheated broiler for about 2 minutes.

Have you ever had kuchen derbrucer?

Which kind?

Quote
Known forms of Kuchen
One kuchen is similar to a pie, with a thicker, cake-like crust and a sweet custard-based filling.

Some kuchens can also be made by simply baking custard filling.

Another kuchen is a pastry in which a filling is rolled into a long spiral of dough, baked, and then sliced to serve. It is sometimes referred to as a nut roll.

The term "kuchen" is used in Southern Indiana to describe a coffee cake with veins and pockets of cinnamon and sugar baked throughout.

Anyway you talk about it the answer is surely yes - when I lived Philly we had a German baker deliver to our door three times a week!

The aforemention Baker would arrive before anyone was up, the first riser would find the still warm pastries just inside the front door. He always left his "baker's selection"   and returned in the afternoon one day a week to be paid.
