Well, you've read the notes, the notes never slept, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - unlike the city, all they do is sleep.

And the word of the day is: RASPBERRY!

And now - Dino at the piano.

Umm.... How many times do I have to tell you, my name is Jose!

I thought for a moment that something was wrong with the board, then I realized went ahead and posted at midnight New York City time!

It was sooooooo great seeing DRs Tom and Colin (a.k.a. The Boys from Down Under) again! And it was also great getting together with DRs Ben, Ant and Rodzinksi.
Various forms of media were traded. Stories were shared. And good cheer abounded. It really was a very enjoyable gathering. It's just too bad that Tom and Colin had to get back to their hotel to rest up for the start of the rest of their trip early(!) tomorrow morning. But again, it was great seeing them again.
Hmmm... I have been thinking of taking a nice vacation in January... And since I've been wanting to get back to Australia...
;)
-
And a very big Thank You to DR FJL and his ever-lovin' Skip for hosting and cooking dinner tonight. And, of course, thanks should also be extended to Toby and Dylan who were on their best behavior tonight. As were our esteemed bk and DR elmore.
;)
-
*And it appears that I have recently gained the weight that bk has lost over the past couple of months. I did take some pics at the brunch gathering, but I may have to do some Photoshopping before I post them. -Alas, I was also wearing horizontal stripes today, so.. Ah, well. ;)
Seriously... I know that I have put on about three to four pounds - depending on the day and time of day - during my stay in DC the past couple of weeks, and it's kind of "amazing" just how much those three to four pounds show up in my face. -Well, at least I[/b] notice it. Now I just need to put the two new pairs of running shoes, the rollerblades and my soon-to-be-purchased bicycled to good use. -It's all a part of "The Plan" - Not only do I hope to finally go through and sort and purge all my "boxes-o-stuff" over the next couple of week - basically shed all that stuff, I hope to shed a few more pounds before 2007. Nothing like an early New Year's Resolution.
-
Well... It has been a very long and full day for me... And the prosecco and rosé with dinner have made me a little sleepy. *And I have to say that that rosé was a particularly fine wine - surprisingly not too sweet or fruity (at least surprising to me), and it had a clean, crisp finish with a slight mineral note. -Boy, I've been reading too much Wine Spectator. ;) In any case...
Goodnight.
-
bk: you reported -
I opened the door and was greeted by a bed, one chair, and a table
Did you bring along a copy of "Bed and Sofa" for atmosphere?

Rosie Goes Bare (http://www.tmz.com/2006/09/22/rosie-odonnell-bares-her-chest)
Nudity is much more acceptable on television these days. But how far is too far? Well, "Nip/Tuck" is pushing those limits with every new episode.
Last week's episode featured guest star Mario Lopez in a nude shower scene, revealing his back side. Rosie O'Donnell will be the next to make an appearance this season, showing a little skin of her own. Apparently it wasn't originally in the script, but when a topless moment for Rosie occurred, the minds behind the show loved it and decided to leave it in.

QUOTE FOR THE DAY
From a reader quoted in Tongue Tied (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,215440,00.html)
Religious symbols, like images of Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, or the tooth fairy, are merely iconic representations with meaning limited to believers.

This came from Woody's Dad:
A man was walking home alone late one foggy night,
when behind him he hears:
BUMP...
BUMP...
BUMP...
Walking faster, he looks back and through the fog he makes out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street toward him.
BUMP...
BUMP...
BUMP...
Terrified, the man begins to run toward his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind him
FASTER...
FASTER...
BUMP...
BUMP...
BUMP...
He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him.
However, the casket crashes through his door, with the lid of the casket clapping
clappity-BUMP...
clappity-BUMP...
clappity-BUMP...
on his heels, the terrified man runs.
Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, the man locks himself in. His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.
With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door.
Bumping and clapping toward him.
The man screams and reaches for something, anything,
but all he can find is a bottle of cough syrup!
Desperate, he throws the cough syrup at the casket...
and,
(hopefully you're really ready for this!!!)

RIP - SIR MALCOLM ARNOLD
First British composer to win Academy Award (http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_4391341)
LONDON - Sir Malcolm Arnold, the first British composer to win an Academy Award, died Saturday at the age of 84 after a short illness, his companion said.
Arnold, who won an Oscar for the music to "Bridge on the River Kwai" in 1958, died in the hospital in Norfolk county, eastern England, after suffering from a chest infection, said Anthony Day, Arnold's companion for 23 years.
...
Arnold composed more than 130 films scores, including "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness," for which he received one of Britain's prestigious Ivor Novello awards in 1958.
Arnold also composed nine symphonies, seven ballets, two operas, a musical and more than 20 concertos. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, or CBE, in 1970.
Arnold died on the day his ballet "The Three Musketeers" premiered at the Alhambra Theatre in the northern English city of Bradford. The performance went ahead Saturday night as planned and was dedicated to him.
Cellist Julian Lloyd Webber said Arnold never received the credit he deserved.
"I think he was a very, very great composer but uneven in his output," he said. "Because he had humor in his music, he was never fully appreciated by the classical establishment."
Arnold is survived by two sons and a daughter.

There has been no trouble with our smoke detectors since yesterday morning, which suggests that it isn't the batteries that caused the problem, but particulate matter in the air.
I'm blaming Fletcher, and his pooting (releasing gaseous emissions in an undisapplined manner).
-
And finally, before I head off to work, I should note that the first ep of Heroes is airing at 9 PM tonight.
The second ep airs tomorrow, at 8 PM.
It's the second ep that is causing a problem here in Rehoboth Beach, because der Brucer has already booked NCIS and House for watching/recording at that hour.
We could, of course, record something on Tuesday on another set, but that would mean not recording it as HDTV (a new der Brucer addiction - I'm blaming DR Matt), and obviously he cannot be expected to watch anything that isn't in HDTV.
Ah, the problems we live with. :-\
Maybe if he watches the first ep of Heroes tonight...
That, and I've got to figure out what's for dinner.

DR S Woody White,
RE smoke detectors: the detectors do wear out--not just the batteries (few people mention this). They can also jam if there's been some dust about. I'd try replacing the detectors--they're cheap. They should be replaced periodically, anyway. Some building codes require that they be replaced, even during new-home construction, if they've been exposed to any dust.

DR Edisauras asked a question yesterday (which i just saw).
We were talking about THE CLOSER and I mentioned that we do not get TNT in Canada. Actually a few people may get it on satellite.
Here the show is carried on Global television. Last year it was carried on their main station. But this year their fall line-up was too full, so it is on their sister station, CH. Monday's at 10pm. Third episode tonight.

Oh and re: the new show BROTHERS and SISTERS with Calista Flockhart.
I am just catching up on yesterday's posts. So i have no idea if anyone has posted their thoughts. But I wasn't thrilled with it. I'm gonna give it another chance next week. But it just wasn't that interesting to me. Calista was in it a lot. And i love her. But there just wasn't enough happening to keep me interested.
And on that note, i'm not sure what i thought of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (spoilers i guess).
.
.
.
It was okay. But maybe i was expecting more. There was so much jam-packed into the hour, i was almost having trouble remember everything that i was supposed to know from last season.
I missed the first minute (with part of the recap). And i was actually having trouble remembering everything. I mean mike in a coma ( i forgot what had happened and that he was proposing to susan). I also had a bit of trouble remembering exactly what had happened with lynette and that psycho mother of her hubby's child. I sort of forget he had a daughter.
Oh and is alfie off this season?

I have a question: does anyone in this community know Alan and Marilyn Bergman? My husband is going out to LA this weekend to interview them, along with Ray Evens (if he's up to it) and Henry Mancini's widow, possibly, for a documentary on Johnny Mercer. (I'll probably be editing that down the road...)
We'd like to bring them a little something in thanks for letting us take up some of their time, but don't know anything about them apart from their songwriting accomplishments.
Any ideas will be gratefully accepted!

Monday morning greetings! Tried my best to wake up with a sinus headache or something not-too-serious that would justify my calling in sick, but it didn't happen. Here I am at work, perusing professional journals and catalogs for reviews of new books that I may want to have the library order.
TOD - Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette movie. Also, I'll give Dreamgirls a try, even though I wasn't thrilled with it on stage. That may have been due to our seeing it at Cincinnati's dumpy Taft Theatre, with uncomfortable seats and bad, bad acoustics.

LOL Ginny, you and I do think alike sometimes. I did wake up with sinus and a bit of an upset stomach - don't think it's serious but I did call in sick. I'll be working here writing, so it's not a REAL sick day, but I am home. I just went to the store and got some Claritin - I think it's allergies and the fixins for chicken soup. I had some oatmeal and that seems to have calmed my stomach. Now if the Claritin kicks in and my head clears a little I'll get some writing done.

I watched the first two episodes of Men In Trees, and although I really liked it at first, it's such a rip off on Northern Exposure, I'm not sure I'll like it. I mean there is the small town in Alaska, the radio show, the bartender and his female counterpart, the New Yorker who is a fish out of water, the love interest that comes close but no cigar, the angry female cop.... The problem for me is, I don't think it comes even remotely close to Northern Exposure as far as the characters, the plot line etc. I'm going to give it a couple more episodes, but not sure I'll stick with it.
-
TOD not sure. Loved the Illusionist, at this point not really looking forward to anything

DR Jennifer, you have forgotten a lot! I wrote my feelings about both DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES and BROTHERS & SISTERS last night. Should be on the last page of yesterday's forum. We seem to agree on both shows, but I made some specific comments especially about DH.
Mike was hit by a car driven by Bree's new fiance. Alfre Woodard and her son moved out of the neighborhood and they are gone from the show.
-
I read the obit for Sir Malcolm Arnold in the enwspaper this morning. Very sad, but he seemed to have had a very rich life.
-
I noticed that the DVR had recorded THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA off Starz! at some point this weekend. With COLD CASE and WITHOUT A TRACE to watch from last night, I'm not sure when I'll get to it, especially since tonight will also feature a full slate of shows.
NBC's HEROES premieres tonight, and I'm eager to sample it. STUDIO 60's second episode got a rave review in USA TODAY this morning, and it's on tonight at 10.
-
I posted my feelings about HOLLYWOODLAND a week or so ago after I saw it. I found the Adrien Brody framing story intrusive as the George Reeves' mystery was certainly complex enough to carry the film. Diane Lane was brilliantly cast as Toni Mannix as was Bob Hoskins as Eddie Mannix. Ben Affleck gave an affecting performance as George Reeves, but he's ten years too young to play George Reeves at that point in his life, and no amount of makeup can hide that fact.
-
Yo, gang! Errands to run, the house appraiser to let in at 10, and then off I go into my new life as a full-time student! Envy for the NY sojourn!
Must run - have fun!
-
The only two films that I'm really looking forward to seeing are THE PRESTIGE and DREAMGIRLS.
I am appalled by how many animated features (which all look and sound the same) are on the docket for the coming months. As usual, Hollywood has taken something that was fresh and different and run it into the ground with EVERY studio jumping on the bandwagon.

*And to save you some possible future stress... For this upcoming visit, just buy a 7-day, Unlimited Use Metrocard for $24 - at least if you think you're going to use the subway more than 12 times (one-way trips). And since it's only good for seven days, you can won't have to worry if it's still good a few months from now.

DR Ginny,
Did I get this right? You were TRYING to get a sinus headache so you could call in sick today, while the REST OF US are suffering with sinus headaches and postnasal drip and other fall allergies, which we DON'T WANT? Oh, dear. Life just isn't fair, is it? (I do sympathize with needing a day off, believe me.)
-
RE: DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.
Yes without seeing any episodes since the finale I did forget a lot. I mean a lot of it came back as i was watching last night (i remember alfre and son packing up but i didn't know if it meant she would not be back at all).
It was weird how they did the 6 months later thing. I am not convinced I like that idea. I like to see things pick up right where they leave off.
-
TOD: LOVED the Illusionist.
Rented a recent film, Villa des Roses by Frank Van Passel. Quite nice, I thought. Very competent acting, lovely visuals. I was pleasantly surprised, as I knew nothing about it when I rented it.

DR Jose - I did give it up, when I found the receipt for the Starbucks gingerbread latte that I had at the airport on our way home, but not the MetroCard. Why did I save that receipt? And, I thought we did buy 7-day cards, but Richard's says clearly on the back that it doesn't expire until November 30, 2006, and can have value added to it ???

Hey bk - are you at the Dream hotel? I had the same reaction to our room when I walked into it for the first time. It's a great place though.

Well, apparently a size ten shoe is something New York stores don't believe in carrying, so know shoes to run in as of yet. I'll look some more tomorrow, but I just may have to not jog this week - I can walk briskly, however, and that's probably fine.
-
DR Jeanne - my desire for a sinus headache was very much in jest. Believe me, I've had enough real ones and other allergy symptoms to know better than to wish them for myself or anyone else!
If I didn't have a vacation/business trip coming up next week, I probably would have taken a mental health day today.

All the Metrocards have expiration dates on them, regardless if they are Regular or Unlimited Cards. The Unlimited Cards are good for 1,7 or 30 days from their first use. So, if you happen to buy one, but not use it until after the expiration date, well, then... No subway or bus for you.

As for last night's TAR.
spoilers.
.
.
.
Last night's show was good. Here are my favorite teams so far:
I think my 2 favorites are model/drug addicts and miss americas.
The male models had one setback but still managed to come back. I think they are very strong (probably the strongest team).
I was also impressed with the miss americas. I would like to see an all female team win. And if they hadn't lost their helmut i think they would have finished first.
I sort of still like the girl with the leg, but less. They are whiny. But at least they came back.
And the asians picked things up and did better. IF it wasn't for their car problem i think they would have done even better.
I still don't like the guy who yells or the father (of the father/daughter team).
And i'm still not crazy about the black women. They are not strong.
He hick couple are entertaining. But they are so weak.
And the gay couple is just okay, but not strong enough yet.
I was sort of sad to see the cheerleaders go. But they were very weak as well.
So many car problems.
-

Did they call down to the Bryant Park location? There are also all the FootLocker and CitySports shops around town, so... Or maybe everyone else in NYC has Size 10 feet.
;)
-
I think all NYC hotels have some of those tiny rooms. I also once (i think at either the edison or the Best Western President) was stuck in the tinest room ever. It had room for one bed and that was it.
I am really claustrophobic also. And there was absolutely no possible way i could have stayed there. So they switched my room.
Every other time i've stayed in NYC i've had rooms that could fit 2 double beds. As long as it is big enough for that, then i am okay. I think if you just ask for 2 double beds when you reserve, then you won't freak out and get the tiny room.
Hey did anybody go to the Broadway flea market yesterday? I'll bet it was great.
-
I think they may not have rooms with two double beds here - but I'm not sure. Certainly when they switched me they looked at everything they had.
-
We all survived opening weekend for Miss Saigon after a rather rocky tech week. I'm still praying during the first part of the nightmare scene. We finally got the pit arranagement right and the right mix in our pit monitors. Yesterday was the first time I felt "connected" with the other side of the pit - which made it a great show. The keyboard programming has been commented on by several "musical director" friends and it's all been positive. The show has been a journey of love, excitment and hard work but the payoff has been fantastic. 2 more weeks of the show still, I don't know how I'll feel when the show is over.
-
Congrats to DR MATTHEW on his SAIGON!
-
Size 10?!!!
Sorry to have been vague, DR EDISAURUS.....yes Ms Beverly Garland and Ms Joanne Woodward are both mortal enemies of Ms Allison Hayes...but that is a story for another day. Garland moreso than Woodward, who probably doesn't even remember who Hayes was.
-
I too am looking forward to DREAMGIRLS. Last movie I saw in the theatre KING KONG - no NOT the 1933 version!
I wanted to see HOLLYWOODLAND, but the reviews and the knowledge that it concentrates on Brody's story rather than the mystery makes me want to wait for the DVD.
-
Hmmm....Brian Easdale won the Academy Award in 1948 for scoring of a dramatic or comedy motion picture for THE RED SHOES. So whoever wrote his OBIT was somewhat misinformed.
-
DR Jose - thanks for the MetroCard clarification. Even though Richard's shows a Nov. 30 expiration date, it probably really expired on January 24 - seven days from its first use. Now I don't feel so bad about not being able to find mine.
-
A CHORUS LINE on Friday night....what a perfect night in NYC!!
Maybe it was the headline writer for the obit who was confused.
-
Don't know Marilyn & Alan Bergman - but they wrote terrific lyrics for the title tune for Carol Lynley's version of HARLOW.

I don't know how much time you have for walking, bk, but I always found that walking the streets for just the usual comings and goings to and from destinations was ample exercise.

It's our annual (if not bi-annual) Silent Auction and Bake Sale. Money raised will be applied toward our agency Holiday Party in December.
I've contributed...I bought a rum cake, made by someone who KNOWS HOW TO BAKE CAKES, for $15.
I'm certain it will be worth it!

I watched "Desperate Housewives" last night...and thought it a WONDERFULLY welcome return. Loved the entire Bree/dentist sequence...exactly what this show does best with narrative and quirkiness.
I watched "Brothers and Sisters" last night...and thought it MAGNIFICENT. Thoughtful, STIMULATING and brilliantly acted. This is a group of people I want to get to KNOW! A totally wonderful script creating real people in realistic circumstances with a perfect blend of story/character.
I was ironing a lot....I may have inhaled too much Niagara Sizing.

Hmm... I bought a bundle of socks the other day. I grabbed a pair and packed them in my bag for the weekend. And I've just noticed that, apparently, there were different colors of socks in that bundle - well, the logo/stripes are different colors. Unless that's how you tell the left one from the right one and vice versa.
;)
-
I was ironing a lot....I may have inhaled too much Niagara Sizing.
Ah... That's actually quite a comforting and calming smell to me... A blast of steam from the iron... A couple of spritzes of Niagara Sizing... I remember my parents teaching me how to iron my own clothes when I was nine or ten years old... And I still find ironing a somewhat relaxing activity. *Of course, I usually send my shirts out to the cleaners now, but, still... ;)
-
There has been no trouble with our smoke detectors since yesterday morning, which suggests that it isn't the batteries that caused the problem, but particulate matter in the air.
"Someone" seems to forget that he did, in fact, change the battery in his smoke dectector during the wee hours (and since they are all on the same circuit, if one goes off, all go off!)

Well...I was sending out...and then it became apparent that "new" machinery was being used. New shirts, on their first trips to the cleaners, were coming back with shattered buttons.
I complained. The buttons were replaced with wrong-colored (close, but not a match) ones.
I'd direct NO STARCH and shirts would be starched.
I decided to do it myself for the shirts that required special handling (and some of mine do, unfortunately...rayons and silk blends). A few shirts direct "do not dryclean"...so...
-
DR S Woody White,
RE smoke detectors: the detectors do wear out--not just the batteries (few people mention this). They can also jam if there's been some dust about. I'd try replacing the detectors--they're cheap. They should be replaced periodically, anyway.
Easier said then done - all the smoke detectors are wired into the house's main electrical system, per code (the batteries are just back-up power),

Ginny, even though the Metro Card has expired as a 7 day all you can ride card, you can still add money to the card and use it until the expiration date. You can always check the status of a Metro Card at a subway booth. There are card readers which tell you how much money is on a card. If there is no money on the card but the expiration date has not passed you can insert the card into the machine and add more money to it instead of buying a new card. It's not much but it does save one sliver of plastic.

I am appalled by how many animated features (which all look and sound the same) are on the docket for the coming months. As usual, Hollywood has taken something that was fresh and different and run it into the ground with EVERY studio jumping on the bandwagon.
A factor might well be the DVD market. These films are the majority of movies appropriate for a family with a first grader in tow. The kids all want the DVD if they see the movie, and the direct to Video market for sequels is huge (just look at your Wal-Mart shelves).
If you were trying to take youngsters to the movies every couple of weeks, you'd wish for more of the same. The good old days of family friendly B-Films (Blondie, Ma and Pa Kettle, Abbot and Costello meet the monster of he week, etc.) are long gone (as is the wonderful concept of Saturday Matinees for the kids - loaded with cartoons, fun shorts, serials, and 60 minute features.) (In those halcyon days of yore, parents had no fear in leaving their 8 year olds alone for a few hours under the watchful eye of the teenage ushers.)

Ha, and we agree again. I really liked the first episode a lot. But this friday's did not keep my attention as much. I do like anne heche and will also continue to watch. But i'm not sure if i'll stick with it also.
And as for BROTHERS & SISTERS, i do think the next episode will tell more (considering the way the first show ended). But the pilot was just not too interesting.

Thanks! I did get it from Netflix and watched it a week or so ago. I'm really glad I did. I was amazed when I got the CD how much of the documentary is in it, or perhaps I should say how the first act of the musical took comments made in passing and expanded them into the story. I'm really looking forward to seeing the musical. I think I talked about them eating corn in a post a while back. They cooked it on a hotplate in the bedroom.

DR Ginny, the card is most likely empty since it was a 7-day card. The expiration date means it will hold money up to that point. The truth is, you can just as easily buy a new card rather than refill it.

Re: Ellen Burstyn, I have kind of snarky feelings about her myself. I was rather neutral until, in the mid-80s, she became President of Actors Equity. I was at a meeting where she "presided" She was working at the time in a show (I believe it was Park Your Car in the Harvard Yard). She stayed at the meeting long enough to open the session and made it quite clear that she was leaving because she was tired and how difficult it was to do a show every night. There were many, many, many, (that's three manys) unemployed actors in the theatre (the meeting was held at the Booth Theatre) who would have given their right (or left) arm to be appearing in an Off-Broadway show and they did not take the comment kindly. Yes, it is difficult appearing in a show six nights a week, but that's part of the bargin when you agree to do it. School strip searches
mandated by House
With student molestations skyrocketing,
lawmakers demand weapon in drug fight

WASHINGTON – Even though student molestations seem to be reaching epidemic proportions in schools across America, the House of Representatives has approved a tough new anti-drug and anti-weapon law that would require local districts to develop search policies – including strip searches – with immunity against prosecution for teachers and staff.
Schools would have to develop policies for searching students, or face the loss of some federal funding, under the bill – HR 5295, approved by a voice vote Tuesday. It moves to the Senate, which does not have similar legislation pending at this time.
The American Civil Liberties Union, the American Federation of Teachers, the Drug Policy Alliance, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, the National Parent Teacher Association, the American Association of School Administrators and the National School Boards Association all opposed the bill saying it could invite unconstitutional searches. The National Education Association supports the legislation, according to the sponsor.
…
The "Student Teacher Safety Act of 2006" passed on a voice vote, bypassing the committee process and with no way to hold individual members of the House accountable for their votes.
Particularly controversial is the requirement that each local school district have search policies in place, with the process defined like this:
"A search referred to in subsection (a) is a search by a full-time teacher or school official, acting on any reasonable suspicion based on professional experience and judgment, of any minor student on the grounds of any public school, if the search is conducted to ensure that classrooms, school buildings, school property and students remain free from the threat of all weapons, dangerous materials, or illegal narcotics. The measures used to conduct any search must be reasonably related to the search's objectives, without being excessively intrusive in light of the student's age, sex, and the nature of the offense."
The bill does not address whether body cavity searches are included, whether training will be provided to staffers performing them, whether background checks on staffers would be necessary, whether students who have been sexually abused in the past would be subject or whether parental notification would be required. Without those specifics, the judgment of local school administrators will be the litmus test.
So, on an ill-defined suspicion grade school children may be searched (maybe even body cavity, who knows) without parental notification.
Next we'll be having Cub Scout sleepovers at the Rectory!

Another long lunch today prevented me from seeing as many things this afternoon as I wanted. I did see both CBS shows last night, though they were about 10 minutes late starting due to sports runovers.
Obviously CBS did not delay their transmission of the high definition versions of the shows because when my local affiliate tried switching over, the show was ahead of where the standard def telecast was. Therefore, my local station stayed with standard definition for both of the CBS dramas last night. (THE AMAZING RACE is not filmed in HD.)

COLD CASE had a mournful episode investigating a mall shooting spree from several years back.
In what has become as chronic case of procedural blight, COLD CASE has also begun sequences dealing with the private lives of the detectives, so the procedurals aren't so pure any more. We're getting more personal melodrama with the detectives running side-by-side with the investigations.
I guess the majority likes these inside looks at the personal lives of the characters on the show, but it ruins it a little bit for me.

I had read that STUDIO 60 toinight was an even finer episode than the season premiere. The same has been written about this week's GREY'S ANATOMY. Can't wait to find out for myself.

WITHOUT A TRACE also had a sad story, this of the marvelous Brian Kerwin guest starring as a pedophile on the run with a recently abducted boy. Background checks on his son revealed lots of very disturbing information. Good episode.

I finished the afternoon watching the last episode on the second disc of the GREY"S ANATOMY boxed set. This was the one dealing with the birth of the quintuplets and also Meredith's one night stand who had a erectile dysfunction. Lovely episode, but I had seen it before.
Two of the episodes on this disc had audio commentaries which I didn't listen to this time around. When I've finished the set, I'll go back and rewatch the shows while listening to the commentaries.

Sign my name to that petition! If I wanted melodrama I'd watch "Days of Our Lives" :)
Some back-story personal data that might add poignancy to a characters relating to the issues at hand would be fine, but I don't need sexual tension between the workers to keep me engaged. (Well, "Bones" might be an exception.)

U.S. to Relax Air Travel Carry-On Restrictions
By LARA JAKES JORDAN, AP
WASHINGTON (Sept. 25) - The government is partially lifting its ban against carrying liquids and gels onto airliners, as long as they are purchased from secure airport stores, and will also permit small, travel-size toiletries brought from home, officials said Monday.
…
New procedures also were announced for toiletries and products like lip gloss and hand lotion that passengers bring to the airport. Previously, those liquids have been confiscated at security checkpoints. Now, these products will be limited to 3-ounce sizes and must fit in a clear, 1-quart size plastic bag. The bags will be screened and returned if they are cleared.
The new security regimen is for an indefinite period and will take effect Tuesday morning.

...And then there are those theatre companies who hold a "Wandelprobe". Sometimes it's a better alternative - it allows the actors to go through their blocking in stage, thus allowing the conductor and the actors find places where they might need to adjust the blocking in order to keep the lines of communication open. It's all about sightlines. Also, a wandelprobe can also be used to give the sound department an initial try at the mic-ing set-up. However, if you're really lucky - and the budget allows for such things - you will both a sitzprobe and a wandelprobe.

At one end, they were setting up the seats for tonight's simulcast of Madama Butterfly from the Met. Yep, they've set up chairs in the middle of Times Square. They'll be showing the opera on one of the jumbo-trons down there.
And then at the other end of the plaza, there was a mini-stage set-up since Diddy (formerly P. Diddy) was about to make a special appearance in conjunction with the release of his new album tomorrow. I also believe he was on MTV's TRL today too.

I’m exhausted & trying not to fall asleep. Friday we drove 10 hours to Bakersfield for the night, then Saturday spent most of the day playing with the litter of puppies and deciding Sherlock had the best temperament of them all. :D :D The breeder put us to work helping her bathe them all. It was a very fun day.
After the fun & games we headed to L.A. for the night to visit with Keith’s mother, and then back in the direction of the breeder for our Saturday morning adoption.
It is amazing how much “stuff” is needed when traveling with an 8 week old puppy. :o Keith slept, I should say didn’t sleep, on the hotel floor in a puppy playpen to keep Sherlock company and quiet. He really was very good and handled the trip well.
Last night, his first in a crate, I slept on the floor next to him. We all got up at 2:00 and again at 5:30 for him to go out. Once again he was very good so I think we can sleep in the comfort of our own bed tonight, of course that might make it more difficult to get up at 2:00AM.
-
Not even when you were working 42nd Street?
Umm... No. Besides, that was all whistling and cat-calls.

There are a couple of Bollywood movies coming out in the near future that I am looking forward to, but other then that I am unsure what movie releases we have "coming to a theatre near you."
As for the cartoon movies...frankly, I don't think they have been releasing enough of them...I haven't found anything fun to take Taylor to in many moons (except CARS which we just never got to).
I am hoping a theatrical sequel to Curious George will be in our future as both Taylor and I loved the first movie!
-
Hurray for the lifting of some of the carry-on restrictions!
I was going to have to check my bag for a mere three-day trip to Ottawa -- which would have added at least a half hour, probably more, on either end of the trip to retrieve my luggage.
Re Ellen Burstyn (nee Edna Gilhooley - yeah, I'd change that one, too) - Years ago I was at a Brugh Joy weekend retreat at Asilomar in Monterey. Burstyn, an old friend of Brugh's, was there. it was a really memorable time - but what stands out most in my mind is a gathering at the end of the weekend at which Burstyn read a poem -- The Invocation to Kali by May Sarton. It was one of the most beautiful readings of a poetry I've ever heard in my life.

However, if you're really lucky - and the budget allows for such things - you will both a sitzprobe and a wandelprobe.
And then there's the time I was in a show (Amadeus) and instead of what should've been the first read-through, we had a "wander-through." We read the script and wandered through the staging that was in the script. :P That was not a pleasant show experience...for many reasons.

Congrats DR Jane and DH Keith...when do we get to see baby pics!!!! ;D
-
All this talk about NY makes me feel a bit sad. I have had to postpone my visit. It just seemed one obstacle after another was making this trip more and more difficult. Most of all, I should really wait until I my friend in Pennsylvania is feeling up to a proper visit.
-
Congrats on the new member of the family, Jane and Keith!!
I too slept on the floor (well, on a futon on the floor) beside Abie - now a mature gentleman of 4 - when he first arrived home from the Boulder Humane Society at 8 weeks of age. He slept half in his crate, half snuggled beside me. For two nights I got up every couple of hours to let him out. Same schedule of going out - especially after playing - during the day. And that was it - never had an accident after that. The initial sleepless nights and hard work pays off bigtime. Again - congrats!
-
Hi Jose, guess I’ll miss your show in DC. For now my new appointment is April 2nd, unless I can go sooner.
MBarnum and Danise, I’m working on the photos.
DRLaura, your photo is beautiful.
-
Pardon me, but i have to back to Saturdays posts to see if Jane got the new addition to the family! I'm hoping to spot some pictures!
Would any of those be Saturday Evening Posts?
If so, would any of the pictures be by Norman Rockwell?
-
Adoption Day!!
-
Adoption Day!!
Great news!! And that's a wonderful picture of the three of you!! ;D
-
Thanks Maria. It would have been nice to begin this process well rested, not after a long trip with
sleepless nights. ;D
Sherlock is napping right now, wish I could join him. Instead I must go grocery shopping after a day spent doing laundry.
We really adore him. :D
-
Thank you George.
-
This was taken before his bath. He found a rock to climb on and relax.
-
"Someone" seems to forget that he did, in fact, change the battery in his smoke dectector during the wee hours (and since they are all on the same circuit, if one goes off, all go off!)
der Brucer
Ah, but after that "someone" changed the battery in the smoke detector in his room during the wee hours, the alarm continued to go to the wacky side. So, unless all the batteries get changed, "someone" and "somebody else" won't know whether the batteries are the problem or not.
-
Adorable puppy, Jane!
-
Thank you DR Laura--here's one more that is now the desktop wallpaper on our main computer.
-
Adoption Day!!
Ain't nothing better than a fluffy little Bernese! Congratulations!
-
Sherlock is a cutie pie!!! Great pics
-
Oh, and you and Keith look good too!

To whom do you want to give your CHAPERONE tickets?
-
Gee! Sometime during the day, I became a "Full Member"!
So why am I still hungry?
(Wondering whether DR's Derbrucer or Elmore will be the first to make a comment about a "full member")
Sherlock....Heel!
Cillaliz...Heal!
-
Congrats Dr Edisaraus on your new status as a full member...
I'm feeling much better, thank you. It must be allergies, the Claritin seems to be doing the trick
-
Joe Allen--I think I may have eaten there a time. Or two! ;)
I love Joe Allen, too, I always go there with a NY editor friend from Atlanta, John Allen. He probably feels a certain kinship...

Actually, just the opposite problem.
In other words, one leg is a few inches longer than the others?

Good Evening!
Well, time for me to get ready to head back down to DC...
But before I do...

Sitzprobe was new to me too
It sounded to me like something they'd do to you in a hospital!
Or on an alien spacecraft. :-\

DR Jane - That is one CUTE puppy! And the three of you make a fine looking family.
-
Well... Till I'm back in DC...
Laters...
-
Thank you DR Laura--here's one more that is now the desktop wallpaper on our main computer.
Is Sherlock giving Keith a lick, or pulling on Keith's cap?
And the size of his paws!!! :o
(Sherlock's. I think Keith has already grown into his. ;))
I'm jealous!
-
Dr Jane, now I must get down to the Rogue Valley again so I can see that big bundle of joy, Sherlock! I don't believe that I have ever seen such a cute dog!!!!! I just showed the picture to everyone in our office!

For those of you in NY tomorrow who need a little anarchy in your lives:
Sacco and Vanzetti at CUNY
Tuesday, September 26, 6:30 PM
City University of New York Graduate Center Recital Hall,

Shameless spam of the day!

Good afternoon Esteemed, cramped, rehearsed, well-fed, and sitzprobed BK --
I'm glad your trip back went fairly smoothly, and unfortunately I'm not too surprised by the size of your hotel room. I've had some real disappointments and challenges with NYC hotels. But then, I try to be in them as little as possible.
If you can, have a shrimp cocktail shrimp for me at Joe Allen's.
-
OH, I don't believe it... I acutally got to start a new page!
LIFE IS GOOD !
-
Jane - I can see the new head of the household in those pics! He's one cute pup. Has he barked yet?
-
DR Jane - Sherlock is a very cute puppy! I'm glad your trip to get him went smoothly. You'll be glad to be home with him during these early days. Even though we'll miss you in NY, I know you made the right decision.
-
DR Edisaurus - congratulations on your new status!

Back from rehearsal, which was fun but way too exhausting even though all we did was sing. When you haven't done this regularly for twenty-one years (singing over and over and over and over) it's really wearying on Ye Olde Vocal Chords, which are now, of course, shot. I think I'll get stronger as the week goes on - it's basically like exercising a long-dormant muscle.
A Long-Dormant Muscle - that's the title of my next novel - and a sizzler it is, too.
I'm resting my voice now and then will be on my way to Joe Allen for a large and tasty supper. And I don't have to be at rehearsal till 5.:30 tomorrow, and I assume we won't be running things over and over and over and over, vocally. I like the cast very much - especially Maureen Silliman who was kind enough to say that she liked the way I was singing the role - kind because her husband normally plays the role I'm doing. Very sweet.
-
It's only been four and a half years since I've performed in public at all and I'm now off to my first rehearsal! BK, I'm glad yours went so well. We'll see how mine goes!
Later!
-
it's really wearying on Ye Olde Vocal Chords, which are now, of course, shot.
Go, Bruce!
Time for more Diet Snapple®!

This morning I went for a walk and this is what I saw:
Pretty... Love dragonflies DR Laura!

In the September, 2006, issue of Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries, there's a bibliographic essay entitled "Film Music: Interdisciplinary Scholarship, Analysis, Criticism, and Theory," by Melissa Goldsmith of Louisiana State University. I'd post a link, but it's not available electronically. Any DR who'd like a copy, please PM me and I'll photocopy it for you.
I would like a copy. We dont have that in our E-Journals....
I am working on a research paper for my history seminar class. I am researching the historical attitudes and mindsets of people after the implementation of IDEA in the school systems.
Rather interesting some of the attitudes I have read. I will compare it with todays mindset and see how it has changed and what needs to be done.

Jane, You and Keith look great and Sherlock is every bit the distinguished gent in your arms...
I send continued good vibes in training!

I leave such rude thoughts to our DR TCB!

Thank you DR Laura--here's one more that is now the desktop wallpaper on our main computer.
What a sweet picture of Keith and Sherlock!

Sherlock is beautiful!

Ain't nothing better than a fluffy little Bernese! Congratulations!
Nothing!!! :D
-
Maria, yes he has barked and it’s sooo cute.
You were very lucky to only have one accident with Abie. We are being diligent but when the puppy has run under the dinning room table with his new toy it is very difficult to grab him in time to prevent an accident on the rug. ;D

Tonight I watched The Class and Heroes. Heroes is definitely a keeper. I'll give The Class one more try, but I don't think it's going to catch. Last night I half watched Brothers and Sisters in the background while on the phone with my mom. I'll give it another try too, but I'm not sure. Last week I tried to watch 6 Degrees but I couldn't get more than 10 minutes in without changing the channel. Heroes is definitely my fave new show so far. I'm also looking forward to checking out The Nine. And that is my tv report.
-
TOD: Dreamgirls, Running With Scissors, Jesus Camp, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Sherrybaby, Shortbus, The Prestige, Babel, Marie Antoinette, Stranger Than Fiction
-
And now I have to try to get some sleep. I've been feeling exhausted lately- I think it will take me a bit longer to adjust to the new schedule.
-
Thank you Ginny, DakotaCelt and TPunk.
I’m very lucky Keith needed a puppy so much or we wouldn’t have Sherlock. He never asked me to get one but how could I not when he ached so for a dog. Now I’m so excited I’m like a kid in a candy store, or a puppy in a house filled with toys and love.
-
Just checking a few more of the UPCOMING film release sites and find that John Curran has directed a new version of THE PAINTED VEIL with Naomi Watts and Edward Norton as the married couple and Liev Schreiber as the Other Man.
I will add that one to my list of "will see at the movies."
-
Sherlock is a cutie!!!
-
I was intruiged by a film on DR TPUNK's list, until I checked its pedigree on IMDB.
I do not think I am interested in seeing Marie Antoinette directed by Sofia Coppola and featuring Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman (Sofia's cousin) as Marie and Louis.
-
Any of the NYC Equity members remember working with Schorling Schneider?
-
Only one hour left until the new notes!
DR CP - MR BK is on the same time as we are now!
-
Ok, so I went to the audition and it went fine as far as I'm concerned and they want me to go back tomorrow and sing again. BUT--- I'm having some real problems with the way they want to do it. They are putting together a Broadway Revue and writing it themselves. The soloists pick their own songs...then, the director sends the sheet music to someone she knows online who prepares a canned background, she describes it as Karaoke. So, it boils down to a Karaoke show without paying any licensing etc. Taking aside not paying fees, there are tons of musicians in this town and no reason they couldn't put together a combo to play. I just HATE the idea of a canned karaoke show.
I realize they are a small new company, and don't have funds, but this just doesn't sit well with me. Am I wrong to have this bother me?
-
Quick, Watson, the doggie biscuit!
Had a large and lovely supper at my beloved Joe's. Bacon cheeseburger, small caesar, and a shrimp cocktail to start - NO DESSERT!
I walked a LOT today, so I'm hoping I'm fine.
Here is a big surprise for you: The Ovation Awards nominations, which are chosen by a bunch of know-nothing LA critics and out-of-work actors who get to see shows for free, have come out. And how predictable they are. The Wild Party - many nominations. It Came From Beyond, a sci-fi musical spoof which magically appeared about a year after I talked about The Brain back in 2001 - many nominations for a show I was told by several was almost without merit. Lizard - another musical by the team who gave us Dorian and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir - those two shows also had multiple nominations despite their, shall we say, having lacked a certain something. Of course, many for Curtains, many for The Drowsy Chaperone, and some odder than odd one-offs. Of course, the univerally loathed (by the LA critics) but audience approved Deceit received 0 nominations, despite the wonderful performance of Matt Ashford.
-
Quote from: DERBRUCER on Today at 01:49:54pm In other words, one leg is a few inches longer than the others?
Definitely a problem with inches.
-
As humble as Bk seems to be trying to be, our director felt compelled to praise his voice highly after hearing his rendition of the opening number, which BK leads.
Bk still has it, and the people who will see his performance as our tour guide through the story are in for a real treat.
PRAISING HIS PHRASING - That's the most appropriate title of Skip's assessment about Bruce's rendition of the numbers he leads, loving the naturalness and simplicity.
And I'm loving what he's bringing to the dialogue. Also, in a part with several monologues, his skills as a raconteur really come through.
-
Loved the family pictures, DR Jane. Terrific to see all three of you in that one shot! Congratulations on your new acquisition!

I watched another GREY'S ANATOMY episode, this one following the birth of the quints and featuring the story of the "leech man." I had seen it before, and I enjoyed it just as much the second time around.
I didn't recognize Timothy Bottoms as the "leech man." Nice to see him again.
-
the univerally loathed (by the LA critics) but audience approved Deceit received 0 nominations, despite the wonderful performance of Matt Ashford.
Philistines! What do they know?
-
Love the pup pix, Jane, and love the pup!
-
I liked THE CLASS. No, not every character appeals to me. I can't warm to Andrea Anders' character. I found her bland on JOEY, and I find her totally unmemorable here, too. Jesse Tyler Ferguson can do no wrong. I think he's adorable. Sam Harris is a total hoot! Jason Ritter isn't as interesting as the other guys in the show, and he seems to be the star. I'm not sure if they shouldn't shift the emphasis off him and onto some others (though, to be fair, they are giving everyone some good opportunities).
-
Of course, BK still has it. His voice is almost as good as the great Guy Haines!
-
Ok, so I went to the audition and it went fine as far as I'm concerned and they want me to go back tomorrow and sing again.
DR Cillaliz, given how you were feeling this morning, that's terrific that you were up for it and did so well. You guys are inspiring to me!
-
HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER. Not as good as last week, and Neil Patrick Harris' Barney character, stealing date after date from Marshall, is the kind of friend it's ricidulous to think anyone would let hang around them for long. Before, I thought his narcisism was slightly endearing, but it's become selfishness in the extreme now and very unappealing to me.
-
HEROES took a great portion of the hour to hook me. I understand as a new show, a lot of exposition had to be taken care of. I wonder how many viewers were patient enough to hang around waiting for feats of surprise or amazement?
Nevertheless, I'll be anxious to see where the writers go from here. (And I understand we'll be adding "heroes" regularly.)
-
STUDIO 60 featured more bright writing and exemplary acting. Yes, it's certainly a show I will continue to watch. I like all of the cast and look forward to getting to know some of the less center-stage characters in the months ahead.
-
Sure......... of course............. naturally, we would have nine pages of posts on a Monday when we start Monday at 9:27 p.m. on Sunday. What is the matter, BK, you couldn't stay up until three a.m. EDT in order to post at midnight?
-
Well, thanks to FJL for the morale boost. I've got plans to not speak tomorrow until rehearsal, and I think if I just don't abuse Ye Olde Vocal Chords that I may make it without having to see Dr. Feelgood.
-
Heading off to bed now.
Good night!
-
Of course, the univerally loathed (by the LA critics) but audience approved Deceit received 0 nominations, despite the wonderful performance of Matt Ashford.
Off with their heads....
Matt wins kudos and Tonys in my book as does bk!!
-
There has been no trouble with our smoke detectors since yesterday morning, which suggests that it isn't the batteries that caused the problem, but particulate matter in the air.
I'm blaming Fletcher, and his pooting (releasing gaseous emissions in an undisapplined manner).
Okay, but don't be surprised if it does it again just about a week from now!
-
No, DRCILLALIZ...many of us would feel the same....as will the artistic directros and the audience when ASCAP/BMI show up and close them down....as happened to one "cabaret" that was open nearly a two years here in Indy.
-
"Praise His Phrasing" the hilarious new game show where YOU choose the singer and the song! And here is your host - Bill Cullen!!
-
No, DRCILLALIZ...many of us would feel the same....as will the artistic directros and the audience when ASCAP/BMI show up and close them down....as happened to one "cabaret" that was open nearly a two years here in Indy.
They haven't finished doing the casting yet, so even though she made it clear I would be in the show, I think tomorrow I'm going to tell her that the court set a trial or something like that and I won't have time to do it after all. There's a good community theatre here - I haven't particularly liked the shows they've done, but maybe something good will come up there this year. I know they do things the right way so I would be glad to be in one of their shows...of course that would depend on whether they would like me to be in the show...
-
JRand - That WOULD be an interesting game show. :)
Skip naturally meant his comments about Bruce's phrasing as a very high compliment.
And of course, Bruce, singing almost continuously from 1 pm to 3 pm in your work-through session in addition to the regular rehearsal is much more singing than in a 2-performance day.
-
We had a great band rehearsal with the cast, which got a boost out of the instrumentation. It was nice to finally meet Beth Fowler, and I love Mary Stout. The ensemble is great, and I think all bodes well fro the show.
What part is Beth Fowler playing?
