Well, you've read the notes, the notes were festively festive (and why shouldn't they be - it's Ocober, after all), and now it is time for you to post until the festively festive cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: EFFULGENCE!
-
I shall now try to get five and one half hours of sleep. That is, if my neighbors will shut up and stop being so damnably loud.
-
Good Evening!
So glad to hear that the The Last Starfigher readings and the Joe Allen soiree were such successes. I really am sorry that I could not make it back up to NYC for both events. I'm sure that there will be many more Joe Allen get-togethers in the future, and I'm pretty sure that we have not heard the last from The Last Starfighter either.
:)
-
Sleep well, bk. -Got ear plugs?
-
Awww... Brian Williams just did a nice cameo on "SNL".
-
Glad to hear that STARFIGHTER went so well. Sounds like a great time was had by all at Joe Allen. I hope someone took photos!
-
In other news...
After I finished running my errands this afternoon, I met up with my friend, Andy, for dinner and a movie.
Dinner - Gordon-Biersch - Those Garlic Fries sure are yummy! And the Jägerschnitzel was very tasty too.
Movie - "Flyboys" - A good movie, not a great movie. I've never really been a fan of war movies, and this one didn't help turn the proverbial tide. Some nice eye candy, some nice aerial scenes of the French countryside (well, actually England), and way too much CGI for my taste. And I just have to wonder just how much of the story was "inspired" and/or "based" on real events. -Well, I know that World War I really did happen, so... ;)
-
Is this deja vu? Didn't I just read about DR Jose eating garlic fries?

Hmm... I thought when I clicked "Post" that the topic was locked... So that's why I posted again... Or maybe I just had too many garlic fries.
:P

OH! Lo and behold, my first post "yesterday" did post, so... My apologies for the redundancy.
-
Sheesh!
And I just re-checked my recent posts, and it seems that I'm repeating myself all over the place.
-or something like that.
???
-
Well... And I don't think I've mentioned this yet... ;)
I think I'm just gonna wait to head back up to NYC until midday Monday. This way, I can take my time getting my things in order and packed for later in the week. -I'm gonna need to pack for my cruise tomorrow, so I'm not scrambling late Thursday night when I get back from NYC. However, if I find that I'm running ahead of schedule, I can always head to Union Station tomorrow afternoon and hop on the next train. Sounds like a plan - and a contingency plan to me.
-
DR MBarnum - You can always call my cell phone. ;)

OH! Lo and behold, my first post "yesterday" did post, so... My apologies for the redundancy.
No problem , I'm just glad I wasn't seeing things
-
Time to say good night.

The Last Starfighter was a real treat, GREAT cast. BK made an enjoyable Otis. It was kind of odd to see the real live Jessica Skerritt in person, after she had been an HHW phenomenon some time ago. The show is a lot of fun, and although I was a part of what Skip felt was the less responsive of yesterday's two audiences, the audience seemed rapt with attention from my point of view. Some audiences are more vocal than others, but you can't always go by that.
The Joe Allen fest was also fun. A good mix of folks. A tasty tostada for me. I have to say I don't know if ANYONE took any photos. Uh-oh!
-
George, thanks. I don't know when they will decide who wins that contest. Friday was the deadline for entries. I was feeling pretty good about my chances, but I looked last night and there were a couple last minute entries that had some detailed animation and whatnot, so we may not win.
-
MBarnum! Sorry I missed your call.
-
The dude who played Zur in STARFIGHTER was good. In the "Father/Son" number, he seemed to be channelling Barry Dennen as Pontius Pilate in the JC SUPERSTAR film.
-
DR MBarnum - You can always call my cell phone. ;)
Keep it turned on Thursday, maybe I will join the walking tour! Or at least call and say hello to all!

Restaurant Serves Chocolate Pizza
By Belinda Goldsmith
Reuters
NEW YORK (Sept. 29) - Slices of chocolate pizza. Syringes that squirt liquid chocolate into your mouth. Warm double chocolate fondue.
Israeli restauranteur Max Brenner's new chocolate bar off New York's Union Square, Chocolate By The Bald Man, caters for chocoholics of all ages -- and is pretty much a disaster for anyone trying to watch their weight.
Brenner has opened 19 restaurants worldwide in the past six years -- in Australia, Israel, Singapore and the Philippines -- but this is his first in the United States with plans to open a second in New York's East Village later this month.
Sitting in his restaurant that has the feel of a European cafe but with zany wallpaper and pipes across the ceiling giving it the look of a chocolate factory, Brenner explains that he set out to create a chocolate culture.
"I believe chocolate for people is not just about taste. It's about memories, about fantasies, about fun," the bald-headed Brenner told Reuters as he melted, mixed and poured a variety of chocolate concoctions.
"People want the whole chocolate experience. A ritual. So I created a ceremony around chocolate with special cups and utensils."
Hot chocolate is served at his restaurants in oval-shaped cups tapered at one end called "hug mugs" that are cradled in hands. Coffee comes in "kangaroo cups" with a pouch or shelf for chocolate. Ice cream popsicles come with bowls of melted chocolate, chocolate waffle balls and caramelized pecan bits.

Well...
Been there. Done that.
;)
Actually, when I was in Australia a few years ago, I happened to come across Max Brenner's shop at Manly Beach. I haven't been to his new New York store, but, trust me, it's on my list.
*And you should have seen the lines of people waiting to get into his new store even before it opened since no definite opening date was posted. And, yes, I was one of the hopefuls.
-I'm just trying to figure out if he's related to Yul Brenner.
-And his website is pretty cool too - just Click Below:

Well, instead of joining the NY HHW gang at Joe Allen's (via telephonic device...I am pitifull, I know) I watched some motion picture entertainments including the low budget 1963 horror flick HOUSE OF THE DAMNED starring Ms. Merry Anders and Mr. Ron Foster, who is my new favorite B movie actor.

I am watching an SNL skit about the TSA, which I am finding quite funny.

Great show. I have mixed opinions on Tennant. I prefered Eccleston.
Zoe Wanmaker! That's who that was! I knew that I knew who she was but I just couldn't think of her name (even when she was on last season). Damned squished credits. :P
Anyway, I will admit that I do prefer Eccleston as well, but mainly because Tennant is new...maybe after the second series is over, I might feel differently.
But then, no matter how I feel about Tennant, I'll always like Eccleston, too. ;)

I went to see a play in traditional epistolary form tonight, "Love in the DMZ- A play in letters" and it was throughly touching and thought provoking and striking and everything live theater should be. I truly loved it! It was an invitational performance for playhouses wishing to host the play in their theater, and there are even talks of having it off broadway.
If I hear of an open performance of it anyware I will post and highly reccomend!
-
Well, in the morning, actually, at noon, I have to work concessions at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/) for a performance by Tacoma Concert Band (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/calendar/calendar_detail.asp?event_id=835)...a.k.a. TCB! (it really is referred to as TCB! ;)) That should be fun.
I need to be there at noon, but I can leave after intermission. I probably will, because we have the first read-through for Cannibal: The Musical! at 7:00. I haven't looked at the script at all! ::)

And now I must go to sleep. Good night, Adriana Patti and Guests. :)
-
I'm up, I'm up, and shall now be on my way to the airport. If I have time, I'll post from there.
Jose, there'll be another Joe Allen gathering in three weeks I should think when I come in to record the Emily/Alice concert.
-
Here I am at the Newark airport in the President's Club in my own little kiosk in my own little room, posting on my handy-dandy computer. Isn't that exciting? Isn't that just too too? I got my boarding pass online (although the gate changed since it was printed), and I'm just relaxing until the eight-forty flight (boarding around 8:05). And I'm not even using the computer battery - I plugged in.
-
Now, where in tarnation IS everyone? When I sat down here there was no one else. Now, I've got two really loud talkers sitting nearby because I'm sitting near the bagels and rolls. These people all eat like pigs, I must say. Bagels, rolls, rolls, bagels, bagels, rolls, then they eat more rolls and eggs and potatoes and stuff on the plane. And the guy has a REALLY annoying voice and worse, he's MUNDANE.
-
What am I, doing a monologue? Certainly this idiot nearby is doing a monologue - he has not shut his mouth for ten minutes - the poor man whose ear he's bending is just sitting there like so much fish. I don't know if this fool is Eyetalian, but he certainly talks in that goombah way. And he talks with food in his mouth and then he sucks his teeth (if you know what I mean, and I know you do), and then he drinks coffee and swishes everything in his mouth AND KEEPS TALKING THE WHOLE TIME AND I WOULD LIKE TO GO OVER THERE AND KILL HIM WITH A CROISSANT!!!
-
The ride from the Newark airport into NY took over an hour (on a Sunday afternoon) - the ride to the Newark airport took twenty-five minutes. Go know.
-
I also got through security quickly.
-
The goombah is sucking his teeth again.
-
This guy has a serious case of Joe Pesci-itis. He's like a walking Scorsese movie - talking about detectives and precincts and cases - if he's a goombah cop (lots of "F" words peppered loudly - quote "I don't want to 'f' you - you talk to me like a f-ing ho from the street - don't embarrass yourself you f-ing ho" I'm not making this up. If I were the ho I would simply answer, "Listen, you f-ing dumb goombah, I wouldn't "f" you if you paid me a million dollars and gave me a house in the Hamptons because you SUCK YOUR F-ING TEETH, YOU LITTLE UGLY PIG MOTHER F-ER." I mean, I am sitting next to a living cliche. Lots of Eyetalian words, too - it sounds like he learned them from the movies. The guy he's with looks like he would like to be anywhere else.
-
I am my own frenzy.
-
Now we have a new player - a big, bald man eating endless peanuts out of the noisiest bag I have ever heard. I am being driven mad (not a long drive) and will have to move soon. But, I've got another forty minutes before I need to go to the gate.
-
Here it was my one day to sleep in, but the cats have decided differently!
Hi, BK!
-
I've thoroughly enjoyed reading about all of the events of the past week. My only regret was not being there to see "Starfighter" and meet some of the cool DR's on this group. I hope you have a safe flight back. Sounds like it won't be as bad as my best friend"s...it took her 14 hours to fly from Atlanta to Oiho on Friday! Air port security was so long---over an hour, and she missed her flight and was put on a flight that was delayed 6 hours! So better luck to you!
-
You could almost have passed my husband in the LA airport---he flew back yesterday from shooting on the Johnny Mercer documentary. He interviewed Henry Mancini's widow, Ray Evans (who's 91 but still can talk up a storm and has a superb memory!) and Alan Bergman. No Marilyn...she was up to her ass in ASCAP stuff! Wish I could have gone and lurked around everyone's houses.
When will the book be printed and ready for your fans?
-
I'll have the new book in hand in about seven days - or so I'm told.
The goombah is gone, and so is the bag crinkler.
-
Well, I guess I shall mosey on over to the gate.
Amusingly and predictably, my voice is just fine this fine morning - I could do the show right now. Someday, I'll have my head examined.
-
Amusingly and predictably, my voice is just fine this fine morning - I could do the show right now.
Isn't that the way it always works? Like when you take your car to the mechanic and it suddenly stops making "that noise"...
-
MR BK is moseying to the gate.
Is this a theatrical documentary about Mr Mercer, DR EDISAURUS, or one for the home box?
-
THE LAST STARFIGHTER and Soiree du Joe Allen's both sound as if they were sparkling!
-
Just watched the ending of THE AFFAIRS OF DOBIE GILLIS (MGM 1954) on TCM. I had watched a bit of it decades ago on Frances Farmer Presents, but since I really liked the television series that was on its network run at the time, I gave up on it.
However in this film we got to see Mr Bobby Van and his old nose, a very short Mr Bob Fosse, Miss Debbie Reynolds, and Miss Barbara Ruick (daugher of Laurene Tuttle, who was also present)....Barbara was also married to Robert Horton for a few years... She had kind of a Dinah Shore look....I remember her only from CAROUSEL...didn't like her in that, but she was VERY good in this...paired with Fosse.
Oh and Kathleen Freeman as the leader of a band (that plays more Latvian weddings in the NYC metropolitan area than ANY other) - the famous Stella Kowalski and Her Shottische Five.

And the word of the day is: EFFULGENCE!

This isn't October -
It's ROCK-tober!! ;D

Sunday morning greetings! I'm up early, sending pre-trip emails and packing. Richard and I will leave this afternoon to go stay near the airport to catch our flight to NYC tomorrow morning.
DR JRand - do you have to work at the bookstore again today?
-
It's OCTOBER!
That means that it is
Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!
National Animal Safety and Protection Month!
and
National Toilet Tank Repair Month!
(That's for those of you
whose dogs enjoy having that
"extra water bowl,"
if you know what I mean! ;))
-
OCTOBER is also...
Halloween Safety Month
Children's Magazine Month
National Family Sexuality Education Month
and
Gay and Lesbian History Month
not to mention
National Pajama Month
-
Have people here given any thought to when they're going to go to L.A. to see BRAIN FROM PLANET X? And if so, are there any hotels convenient to the theater?
-
For the foodies amongst us
(and we all know who you/we are)
OCTOBER is
National Chili Month
National Cookie Month
National Caramel Month
National Popcorn Poppin' Month
National Seafood Month
National Pork Month
Vegetarian Month
and
Spinach Lover's Month!
(Yep, it's still on the schedule)
Plus
National Dental Hygene Month!
-
One More!
OCTOBER is
Billard Awareness Month!
Like, man, you can't be aware of billiards
when those balls are clacking against each other?

What I'd like to know is,
Where the heck in Brea is Susan Egan giving a concert?
I used to work there, back before my previous job moved to Glendale.
There's a theater in the civic center, smallish, where der B and I once saw an unmiked production of Sweeney Todd (small enough a theater that being unmiked didn't hurt any of the performers, save their Anthony, who simply couldn't project beyond his own nose).
If that's the place, I think the recording truck should be easily parked near the stage door, well out of the way of the audience parking.
Vibage for the recording!

Good morning, this must be one of those days where cats across America conspire to rouse their humans before they had planned to get up. There are probably kitty giggles being heard from coast to coast.
In other words, the cats woke me up too
-
Off to find breakfast and maybe stop back at the office for an hour or two.
-
Safe travel vibes for BK leaving New York and Ginny and Richard on their way to New York
-
And anyone else who may be traveling on this fine day
-
It's going to be in the 80s here today - maybe close to 90 in some places, that's just too hot for October
-
A little traveling music, please, maestro......
-
Good morning!
Another beautiful day here and the rest of the week looks to be a repetition of the last few days - cool nights and warm days. Beautiful fall weather.
-
I simply cannot believe it is October. September has to be the fastest flying-by month in the history of the world. I don't know where the days went.
-
Ah, drat! I meant to record THE AFFAIRS OF DOBIE GILLIS. I watched it years ago, too, and it seemed so weird for Bobby Van to be playing a part that in my mind was supposed to be Dwayne Hickman.
Well, it'll be on again some time. I'll see it.
-
I had thought I'd get to TARANTULA first today, but I simply must watch THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA and get it off my DVR. With so much TV upcoming, I'm going to need all the space on it I can get.
-
I'm interested in checking out DEXTER, the new series on Showtime starting tonight. Michael Hall plays a forensics expert by day who is also a serial killer by night (seeking vengeance on bad guys his research tells him are guilty). It has gotten raves from most of the critics I've read, and it sounds offbeat enough to possibly vie to replace SIX FEET UNDER as a must-see.
I understand it's pretty grisly (the murders he commits are not left to the imagination.) Anyway, since it comes on opposite both BROTHERS & SISTERS and WITHOUT A TRACE, I'll have to DVR it, and I won't get to it until tomorrow, but I'll look forward to seeing how they pull off such an unusual premise.
-
Premiering on HBO-HD tonight is WALK THE LINE, the Johnny Cash biography that won some Oscars last year. I didn't see it in theaters and I never rented the DVD either, so this will be my first time seeing it. Again, I'll have to DVR it due to conflicting programs on other channels, but I'm looking forward to seeing it since both stars got such raves for their performances.
-
Speaking of Dwayne Hickman, I see that Robert Osborne is doing a "Private Screenings" interview session with four notable child stars on Monday night: Margaret O'Brien, Darrell Hickman, Dickie Moore, and Jane Withers. Should make for some interesting discussion.
-
I have some late morning phone calls to make and some other house chores to do, so I'm heading off the net for a bit.
WBBL.
-
Good morning, all! The curse of a wonderful soiree chez Joe Allen: I got home too wired to sleep, and so I watched tv until after 1 AM. This morning, my sinuses were a mess from allergies and I slept in.
I've got some computer work on the BABES IN TOYLAND sources today, and maybe I will run through my editorial report looking for blunders.
JRand56, I think Barbara Ruick is a disaster in CAROUSEL, the second major problem in the film after the screenplay.[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Travel Vibes for BK!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Safe travel vibes for BK leaving New York and Ginny and Richard on their way to New York
Thanks, DR Cillaliz!
-
And anyone else who may be traveling on this fine day
Among those would be Richard's father's youngest brother, the last surviving member of that generation. Uncle George came from New Hampshire for his sister-in-law's 90th birthday party. We hadn't seen him for about 12 years.
-
Is this a theatrical documentary about Mr Mercer, DR EDISAURUS, or one for the home box?
It's just in its fetus stage, so we don't know where it will go. But when you're thinking about a documentary, you also think:
"who do I need to interview who's really old and might not be around when we really have a budget together, etc.".
So these interviews are a good start. Best case scenario would be that American Masters might be interested, and that it would have some film festival life, too. I didn't know about the Awrence Welk shows mentioned yesterday. I've been trying to find those on my local TV affiliate. Might be some good archival footage (for a billion dollars!)
-
I probably will, because we have the first read-through for Cannibal: The Musical! at 7:00. I haven't looked at the script at all! ::)
Did your group do their own script or get one from some other theatre group who did the show?
der Brucer
-
That sounds quite interesting! A very different theatrical experience than Cannibal: The Musical!, I'm sure.
;)
Yeah - and at the DC production they did a drawing and the audience winner got to take home a bunch of fresh meat donated by a local butcher!

Good Morning!
I'm up! I'm up!
Alas, I'm feeling sort of lackadaisical this morning. Well, not "sort of"... I just don't feel like doing much of anything today... Well, at least right now... Ah, well...
I'm posting. That's something, ain't it?
-
Of course, there's plenty I need to get done today, so...
-
And I'm not even using the computer battery - I plugged in.
Great - out esteemed bk has no belt, but comes with plug attached! (Oh well, he does need an "outlet" for his energy.)
der Brucer
-
-Let's just hope that bk did not end up sitting next to his "buddies" from the Continental Club on his flight back to LA. Although, if he did, I'm looking forward to the stories and updates. ;)

So...
For this Thursday, it looks like it will be a relatively small group - at least compared to last year's jaunt. Off the top of my head:
DR Ginny and her DH Richard
DR vixmom and the vixter
DR Cillaliz and DR jhvw
And myself
DR Ginny suggested Sarabeth's Kitchen on CPS, and since that was what I was thinking, I'll go ahead and call to see about reservations.
Even if you can't make the "tour", any and all DRs would be more than welcome to join us for lunch - elmore, Ben, Rodzinski, Antonia, etc.
*And I just checked the weather for Thursday - low 60s, partly cloudy... In other words, a nice Fall day in NYC. :)
-
*Although, they are forecasting rain and possible thunderstorms for Wednesday, so, don't forget your umbrellas.
-
DR (and tour guide extraordinaire) Jose - I think The Vixter has to go to school on Thursday.
-

And to get a head start on your menu selections - and how much you'll need to take out of the ATM ;):
According to the website, Breakfast is served from 8:00-3:30, and Lunch service starts at 11:30. So, I guess if we hang out long enough, DRs could have both breakfast and lunch at Sarabeth's. *And then if you really wanted to make it a Sarabeth's day, you could head back between 3:30 and 5:30 for afternoon tea.
And for those DRs who can't make it to NYC this Thursday, Sarabeth's has a decent mail order service. So, if you place your order tomorrow, you too could be having a Sarabeth's lunch on Thursday. ;)

An idle thought:
In the good old days (i.e. when I was younger) filmed Documentaries meant unbiased scholarly research like Ken Burns "The Civil War". Now I am confronted with distorted realities, propaganda masquerading as "Documentary", by the likes of schlock-meister Michael Moore (the US radical left's answer to Leni Riefenstahl).
Should someone produce a new documentary of interest, how I can tell in advance whether I will be educated or brainwashed?

Well... I'm pretty sure it's a safe bet that if the topic/subject of the documentary deals with people and events of the last 10-15 years... And if Bush or Clinton is involved...
Some people will call it a documentary.
Some people will call it propaganda.
Some people will call it a mandate.
Some people will call it the truth.
Some people will call it lies.
Some people will call it brainwashing.
Some people will call it education.

This morning I got up bright and early to interview Ms. Shirley Measures, better known as Shirley Jean of OUR GANG fame....
Little Shirley Jean Rickert
(http://www.starletsdatabase.com/pictures/shirley_jean_rickert.jpg)
-
Little Shirley grew up to be a dancer in films like GOOD NEWS, SINGING IN THE RAIN, ROYAL WEDDING, and many, many others in the 40s and 50s.
She then turned her sights to burlesque where she was billed as GILDA, AND HER CROWNING GLORY!
-
That makes two dancers I have interviewed who were in SINGIN IN THE RAIN. I am going to have to watch that movie again sometime.
-
I spy, DR Michael S(hayne)!

Hello!! What a wonderful evening yesterday was.
I must hang my head in shame, however, since, despite my assurances to Ginny that I would take photos, the conversation was so sparkling it never occured to me to reach for my camera until we were driving back home.
I was sitting next to the very talented Mr. Skip Kennon and directly across from the very lovely to look at Mr. Kevin Spirtas thank you very much!!
-
The Last Starfighter was wonderful!! I urge anyone who has not yet purchased the CD to do so forthwith. you'll be glad you did.
I too felt that the audience really enjoyed the show... all the comments I heard during the intermission and afterwards were very positive.
If I could just hit the lottery now so I could be an investor!
BK was great as OTIS he had a real "folksy /dad quality" very upbeat and as the alien character (Grig) he was entirely the opposite really a negative doomsayer... it was great!
I agree with Rodzinski that the fellow who played ZUR and Blake a Mr. Bernardo DePaula was wonderful.
I am so sorry that I did not know that former DR Noel and DR Joy were inthe audience I would have very much liked to have met them. I am a big fan their "Our Wedding" .
-
I would like to thak DR Ben for his chivalrous behavior in so very kindly escorting the Vixter and myself back to our car
and the Vixter extends her thanks to all for "not treating me like a kid and letting me come"
She also wants me to tell everyine that her favorite song frpm Starfighter is Father to Son, She advises you all "to go and listen to it right now because the words are perfect and the music just flows just right and its creepy and cool and evil and great"
NOW go away Vixter and stop reading over my shoulder. Thank you.
-
Wow! I don't know what came over me, but since I went out for breakfast, I have taken apart and washed all the dining room windows, the bathroom window, the sliding glass doors downstairs and the window on the landing going upstairs. I wonder how many years it's been since someone took the windows apart and really cleanded them. They were filthy!
Then I vacuumed the top two floors (just can't get motivated to do the basement, but at the rate I'm going I may) I have the last load of laundry in the clothes washer, ran the dishwasher, ate lunch and now it's 2:00 PM and I'm ready to deep clean the kitchen.
Must have something to do with the 4 glasses of ice tea I had with breakfast, lol. Anyway, off to the races!
-
Sarabeth's kitchen looks great Jose. Do we maybe want to say 11:30 instead of 11:00 so that everyone will have the option of breakfast or lunch? Just a thought
-
Jessica Skerrit was cute and had a nice voice and was much taller than I imagined
James Donegan did a great job of going from mild mannered stage directions reader to evil Zandozan..
everyone was great not a bad apple or weak link in the cast
Fred and Skip shoul be very proud of themselves and their work... One question... why were no cd's available for sale after the performance?
-
Oh I almost forgot, the lawn guy mowed this morning, too. I guess that isn't something I did, but it does look really good.

If I could just borrow you, Jose and Matt H for one day........
-
DR (and tour guide extraordinaire) Jose - I think The Vixter has to go to school on Thursday.
She does!
-
Vixmom, this sort of energy comes over me about once quarterly. So, if you borrowed me for one day, I would probably just want to supervise!
-
Rodzinski... one last note the Vixter think's you're even cooler than she first thought now she knows that you like Dr Who and she wants YOU to go to AngryAlien.com " its hilarious and you'll love it"
-
Well, time to check the dryer and get busy on the kitchen. I just hate coming home from a vacation and walking in to a messy house....isn't going to happen this time
-
Good Afternoon!
"Willkommen, Bienvenue..."
It just keeps going and going...
;)
-
Vixmom, thanks for the update on Starfighter and the soiree. I really enjoy the CD and am glad I have it. Wish I could have been there for the reading.
-

no, no that's what I'm good at!!
There is no cleaning job that I cannot tell someone else how to do!
-
DR Cillaliz - Keep it going! Keep it going!
I get into cleaning "fits" too every now and then. However, mine usually occur sometime after midnight. ???
-
My mother keeps telling me I should attach swiffers to the cat's tails and let them do the dusting....yeah, right
-
Better go, I don't want to loose the cleaning momentum. laters

I have to leave NYC Thursday no later than 4 to be sure to be home in time for meet the teacher so I may not be able to attend all the sites with you all....
and now shamed by the industriousness of all of you I am off to launder and clean and vaccum and dust and clean out closets ...... BYEEEEEEEE
-
As for Thursday... Well... I know!
Why don't we all meet at the Time-Warner Center at 11:00, and then walk over to Sarabeth's? This way, our initial meeting spot will be right at a subway stop - A/C,B/D,1 - and if anyone arrives early, they can check out the shops in the Time-Warner Center. And I think the whole Illy coffee "display" will still be set up, so you can also grab a free shot of espresso - with or without crema - on the first floor.
...Then by the time we get over to Sarabeth's, the lunch service should be starting up.
-
Vixmom - Thanks for that objective, unbiased account of the Last Starfighter reading. Much appreciated!
-
Looks like BK's flight landed in L.A. about 15-20 minutes late. Hope that doesn't present any problems with his getting to his appointment on time.
-

Well, I was planning on making it a short afternoon anyway since other people - including myself - have other events and activities to attend to that afternoon. Since we'll be lunching right at Central Park South, there won't be too much travel time to get to Central Park proper - just cross the street. Right now, I'm thinking, we'll walk up Fifth Avenue, then head back down through the Park once we hit the Metropolitan, Guggenheim, Cooper-Hewitt museums.
*So that means we'll be walking up from 59th to at least 91st, and back again. 30 blocks or so each way. If we leave Sarabeth's by 1:00, then we should be up and back by 3:30 with no problem - and at a semi-leisurely pace. Or we could all head over to Madison Ave., take the bus up - and sightsee via the bus - to 91st, and then walk back from there. Options galore. I may do a test run tomorrow afternoon when I'm back in NYC.
-
Here it was my one day to sleep in, but the cats have decided differently!
Hi, BK!
So like cats :D. Did they want to snuggle and be petted? Ours always did.
-
...And that's 30 of the "short" blocks. ;)

Nice review of NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, which among other things, praises Bruce's foresight in preserving the score.

DR FJL, thanks!

Meeting at the Time Warner Center makes a lot of sense. I'm up for the walk but whatever people want to do is fine with me. I think this is sounds like a great afternoon
-
GOod afternoon. Almost 5 p.m. and it's 80 degrees here. Warmer than I'd like, but since I spent most of the day inside, I guess it doesn't matter.
-
I watched three films this afternoon.
I began with THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA. Lovely film fantasy. Yes, I had to endure the battle sequences (just as I had to do on the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, my least favorite parts of the films).
Some of the characters were truly endearing and one wanted to spend much more time with them.
-
Whew! I think I'm ready to stop now. The stove has been cleaned, the oven is clean, the microwave is clean, the science projects are no longer in the refrigerator. The laundry is done and folded...
I haven't had a cleaning frenzy like that in a while. It was sorely needed!
-
Now I don't want to mess it up by cooking, lol
-
It's currently 89 degrees here. Ridiculous!
-
Next came TARANTULA. Universal has tranferred the film with great sharpness and a very clean print for a film of this age. Yes, I wish they had done an anamorphic widescreen transfer instead (plenty of space at the top and bottom for matting), so I did it myself via the TV, and it looked just fine.
Leo G. Carroll's makeup is well done for his disfigurement, but the other two scientists are in what looks like leftover Gill Man masks from THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. Obviously a cost cutting measure. I guess the extra sharpness of the DVD made those stand out for me this time. I never noticed their cheapness on the videotape.
-
And I ended the afternoon with MURDER IS EASY, the first CBS/Agatha Christie made-for-TV movie. Since it didn't feature any of Mrs. Christie's usual detectives, the film wasn't going to be remembered as fondly as some of the later ones they did. But the star cast was most enjoyable: Bill Bixby, Lesley-Anne Downe, Olivia DeHavilland, Helen Hayes, Jonathan Pryce, Freddie Jones.
-
Before DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES comes on tonight, I will make it a point to clear the DVR of the other TV shows currently on it by watching THE OFFICE and LAW & ORDER. If there is time left over, I may put in the last of THE WILD WILD WEST episodes from the first season boxed set.
-
Yeah! TAR tonight. I do look forward to seeing that. I'm still trying to decide if I want to give someone my ticket to I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU and going to Omaha Tues night so I don't have to get up at 4:00 or 4:30 AM on Wednesday. Has anyone seen it?
-

If I'm not there by five minutes past eleven, go on without me. :P
-
Yes, The Amazing Race....hopefully football won't push it TOO late here in the East.
-
I finally found one of MY favorite ads of ALL time! 8)
-
Yes, the aominable thing about this time of year is late afternoon football that pushes back the entire CBS lineup. On my DVR, I have to set it to not only record COLD CASE and WITHOUT A TRACE but also the news broadcasts afterward, too, just so I can be sure to get the entertainment shows in their entirety.
-
Guess I'll head down now and clean the guest bath before heading back in for more TV.
WBBL.

EDISAURUS:
Well, since your postulated Johnny Mercer film will certainly be a musical, it will be An Edisaurus Line. :-\ I know I'm not up to FJL's standard of truly no-groaning-allowed-here-at-hainshiswaydotcom puns, but I'm trying. Very.
Glad to see the kudos all around for The Last Starfighter, and also for the Grig. The CD gets lots of plays at my home and work. Just so sad I could not attend and also sit opposite the lovely Mr. Kevin Spirtas.
Also good to read the positive review of Night of the Hunter, another show I have grown to love from the CD. But I ask you, why do these reviews never mention the orchestrations?
-
But I ask you, why do these reviews never mention the orchestrations?
I suspect because neither the reviewer, nor most of his readers, are at all aware of "orchestrations" - they usually only stand out when they stink (much like sound)- (and, yes, film editing!).
For the R&H films, Robert Russell Bennett's credits are listed under "Other Crew".
And who ever heard of Jonathan Tunick or Jonathan Tunick!
And what in the dickens is an "arranger" (a male Dolly Levi)?

So...
For this Thursday, it looks like it will be a relatively small group - at least compared to last year's jaunt. Off the top of my head:
DR Ginny and her DH Richard
DR vixmom and the vixter
DR Cillaliz and DR jhvw
And myself
...
That's it, try to make me feel guilty for not coming up for this year's tour.
It ain't gonna work.
I do not have the day off, der B and I cannot just jaunt up to NYC without some kind of planning.
So there.
I don't feel guilty.
Not even a little bit.
Not even a little, eeny-teeny bit.
Besides, my feet are tired from all the pavement pounding I've been doing at work.
::)
-
Sunday greetings from beautiful Englewood, OH! DH Richard and I decided to get ourselves near the airport tonight, rather than fight Monday rush hour traffic coming through downtown Dayton. We had a lovely dinner at Caffe Antiolli, an Italian restaurant that's celebrating its 75th anniversary in business (they've only been at this location since 2000). I had the seafood special, grilled salmon fingers on mild parmesan rice. It was so simple it was exquisite.
We are just relaxing here and I'm trying to bond with the MacBook keyboard.
-
...And for those DRs who can't make it to NYC this Thursday, Sarabeth's has a decent mail order service. So, if you place your order tomorrow, you too could be having a Sarabeth's lunch on Thursday. ;)

An idle thought:
In the good old days (i.e. when I was younger) filmed Documentaries meant unbiased scholarly research like Ken Burns "The Civil War". ...
Which der B helped out with, giving personal recollections. Burns listened to them with the proverbial grain of salt, of course. His loss.
-
DR Elmore - congratulations on the review! We're looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. Do you suppose there are any other DRs who might like to meet for dinner at Artie's?
-
If I didn't know better I'd suspect you were two weeks shy of delivery!

She's a lawyer, der B. She does not wear UPS brown.

I haven't had a cleaning frenzy like that in a while. It was sorely needed!
You were 'way more ambitious than I, DR Cillaliz, but I did get rid of anything in the refrigerator that would not last the week. Garbo, the garbage disposal, ate well this morning.
-
Well, things took a turn for the better at work today!
All that extra effort I've been putting in, wrangling carts in the parking lot, has given management the idea that I'm no one-trick pony. So, today, I got to get some cross-training in the produce department!
OK, most of what I was doing was restocking bell peppers and apples. But that's part of what they do in the produce dept. Learning how to restock correctly has a little trick involved, particularly how to "rotate" the veggies/fruit so that the newest stuff is on the "bottom" of the stack. This means that any fruit/veggie that is going bad gets spotted and tossed, since the entire bin has to be examined. It also means that, in most cases, the veg/fruit that is located where the shopper is most likely to grab will be the stuff that has been on the shelf longest.
So, of course, logically the absolutely newest stock will be where you normally wouldn't grab first, right?
You didn't read that. You never read that. I will deny ever having written that.
::)

He may be, but I know no Oscar Moore. It's interesting, too, that I worked on two entirely different shows for this festival, and I liked both; I believe that both of them have potential. What is interesting to me is that no one involved with the Nun who saw the Hunter likes it, and vice versa!

The Albert Finney starring version of NIGHT MUST FALL is on tonight, I may give it a looky loo, since I've never seen it.

DR Cillaliz -- what did you have for breakfast?

Just watched the mexican creeper MISTERIOS DE ULTRATUMBA (known in the US as THE BLACK PIT OF DR M).

Safe travel vibes to Ginny and Richard

Have a great trip DR GINNY and DH RICHARD!
-
DR MATTH - I am sure TCM will rerun DOBIE sooner or later. For some reason, I thought I remembered it in color - but it ain't so.
DR ELMORE - I certainly concur with your estimation of Barbara Ruick in CAROUSEL....that's why I was so shocked to like her in DOBIE GILLIS! What went wrong with CAROUSEL, THE MOVIE?
-
The Black Pit of Dr M - is that on a Criterion Classic disk?
-

Thanks to DRs FJL and JRand for the travel vibes. We're just chillin' here at the Hampton Inn 'til about 7:30 tomorrow morning. Wireless and laptops are great inventions!

Cillaliz---I do the same thing when I'm going out of town---like if anything ever happened to me in transit, I wouldn't want anyone to come into my house and think I was raised by wolves. (Which is the way it looks now!)
-
I'm back, and to prove it, I'm here. What a day! Up at five-thirty, then the flight took off a half-hour late because some jerks got on at the last minute and their luggage had to be brought to the plane and loaded after all the other luggage had already been put in the hold. Unbelievable. So, we actually got in about ten minutes late - happily, the car was waiting for me and there was no traffic going to my house. My driver gave me what he felt would be the fastest way to Brea to avoid all the usual traffic snarles, and boy am I glad he did. I was able to leave the house (I had to get gas first, though) and be on the freeway by five to one. And I was able to go about seventy-five the entire way and got to the theater at twenty of two - time to spare. I met with Susan, who told me last night's show went well (we recorded that, too) but that there were some serious flubs and that she would try to cover them today. I went out and did my ususal laugh and applause test, which the audience was delighted with and then Susan began the show. She was terrific, the audience ate her up, and unless there are some really great stuff from the night before I only heard about two or three things where I know we'll have to use stuff from the night before - otherwise, she was really on it, sounded great, and all was well. Then I came back, had an obscene amount of food at Casa Vega (with friend Jessica, who was assisting me today) and now I am home and so ready to sit on my couch like so much fish, which I shall now do.
The Egan CD is not for Kritzerland - it will be out on LML Records, where Susan has her other CDs. But, she really wanted me to do it and since I adore her I said yes.
-
Thanks to all for the nice Starfighter comments. The only thing I wish is that this delightful new number Skip wrote for Alex and Maggie isn't on the album. I'll find some way of putting it on something.
-

Good Evening!
I finally had a semi-productive day. My lazy "mood" finally went away earlier this afternoon, which enabled me to take care of a couple of errands. I drove here, I drove there. I bought this, I bought that. I dropped this off, I picked that up. And now I'm finally taking care of my laundry. So...

The Black Pit of Dr M - is that on a Criterion Classic disk?
It is brought to you by Casa Negra, the people who just released THE BRAINIAC and have some other Mexican cine goodies coming out soon!

I am watching QUEER DUCK: THE MOVIE....interesting...I have laughed a lot...but not sure if I would actually recommend it.

Yes, I noticed that the CBS line-up was running 32 minutes late.
-

I had exactly the same reaction. Actually, I thought it began a little slow and picked up later.

I began my evening of viewing with the Dick Cavett/Alfred Hitchcock interview. It's coming on TCM this week, but since I had the interview set with it on there, I went ahead and watched it tonight thus sparing the DVR from another workout.
Hitchcock got off some funny quips and had the audience in the palm of his hand.
-
And now... Time for some "funny"...
One of the guys in the Cabaret band passed these on to me. They remind me of the line from Sunday In The Park With George:
One eye, no illusion
That you get with two
One for what is true
One for what suits you.
So... Keep in mind these are not what you think they are. ;)

Next came DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES:
spoiler
Again, Nora ruined every scene that she's in (at least for me). I don't find her obnoxiousness funny or entertaining, and Lynette's desperation to rid herself and her family of her is more squirm-inducing than entertaining.
The other stories were OK. Edie's nephew I suppose was intended to bring some Jesse Metcalf (the gardner in season 1) style sexuality to the show, but I didn't find him nearly as appealing. Not much of an actor either, at least in those scenes tonight. (True, he didn't have to do much except take off his shirt and smirk).
I continued to find Susan's story the most interesting.
They are developing a nice little mystery with the missing wife.
-
BROTHERS & SISTERS
continued with the angst with the will reading and its aftermath. Nothing especially new or fresh about these characters, at least not yet.
-
So, tomorrow I will surf through everything I recorded off CBS tonight to find COLD CASE and WITHOUT A TRACE. I'll also have Showtime's DEXTER to watch.
-
Omaha? Yeah, a lovely city.

I am guessing that Edie's nephew and Susan's daughter will have a storyline, which is great..the gal who plays Susan's daughter is quite good and deserves to do more in the show.
I get quite a kick out of Carlos and Gabrielle...and Carlos looks darn good with his short haircut!
Nora, to me, is like fingernails on a chalkboard! What I can't figure out is why her daughter turned out so normal.

I did have some good laughs with my dad. He wanted to go out and see the beet harvestors. He does work some but is not well enough to work long hours in beet harvest. He is more or less a "gofer" when he feels up to it. Some days he feels pretty good but other days he doesnt He has deteriorated significantly since Labor day weekend.
