Title: DOES ANYONE STILL WEAR A MUSTARD PLASTER?

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were plastered with mustard, and now it is time for you to post until the plastered cows come home.

I was not overly impressed with DaVinci Code. It is not a bad movie but I liked the book far better.

DakotaCelt, on Saturday at sunrise, I was at Cibola Wildlife Refuge on the Arizona/California border, where they plant crops to attract snow geese and sandhill cranes.

Sadly, they allow hunting on the refuge, which doesn't make sense to me. I heard many gunshots while I was there.

Then today I was at a restoration project in Huntington Beach, which is where I saw the tern and some brown pelicans, among other things.

The reserve sounds lovely but not hte gunshots. I also agree with you and it does not make sense to me either as to why they are allowing hunting there.

Jeez, you leave this board for an evening and everyone welcomes you!

Thanks to all who have left a nice little welcoming comment (and yes, Sandra, I DO like Cherry Coke - it has just been quite a while since I've had one, in fact).

bk - The pictures are amazing!  Are they courtesy of Ksenia's husband?  I got a chance to talk with him this evening at Steve Maradian's Holiday Shindig - and he was talking about pictures he took, so naturally I wondered if these were some of them.  And the Brain Tap picture made me literally laugh out loud.  Too bad I wasn't in the audience Saturday night......

Glad you got home safe DR elmore (as well as our other DR's who are/will be traveling here soon)!

Good morning and a very happy birthday to our very own DR Ginny!  I hope you have a funtastic day! :)

Welcome to new DR Carson, always nice to meet someone new.  You are now posting on the best board on the internet.  Truely you will never find a nicer group of people.

Wonderful photos, DearReaderLaura!  I think you've posted it before but I forgot--what kind of camera are you using?  I love my new Casio camera but am a bit disapointed with it.  It has a 3x zoom but I can't seem to get the kind of picuture I could with my old camera.

It might be that I don't have the setting right.  I keep pouring over the instruction manual but still am not happy.  I don't think would be able to get the close up shots of Michael Ball like I got with the old camera if I were in the same situation.

Safe travel vibes to all who need them!

Thank you all for the good wishes about my health.  I do seem to be much better except for this cough that I can't seem to shake.  It's bad in the morning after I first get up but as the day wears on it goes away.

The people on the bus think I have the plague and I never seem to have a problem with getting a seat to myself.  That's both good and bad.  Sigh.

Good morning, all!  I have to run to the Post Office and pick up 10 days of mail.  It's like the Wells Fargo Wagon comin' in!  It's like Christmas!  Packages, magazines, and bills!  All I need is a song cue.

So, today, I need to trek to Toyland for Act Two edits, and thern I have a ton of laundry.  The aftermath of the glamorous Life is the not-so-glamorous-life, I guess.  TGonight is the New York City Gay Men's Chorus concert, and I should go since I have several arrangements in the program, but I may just stay home and read 10 days' worth of mail.  That seems more fun to me for the nonce.

Tomorrow afternoon, I have the memorial service for my beloved Barnard Hughes, and I look forward to seeing his widow Helen Stenborg, a lady I've loved since I saw her in Lanford Wilson's FIFTH OF JULY.

Time to go, but first . . .

I was very happy with the final three placements. They finished in the exact order i wanted them to finish.

I wish that there was more room for skill in the final episode. So much is left up to luck.

I was mad that rob and kim managed to get on that last flight before the models (even though the models were there first). I would not have liked them to win that way.

I also did not like how rob and kim made their taxi follow the models.

Who knew the winners would win based on getting on a flight at the last minute and an EZ pass!

We have a Christmas shopping errand to do in Cincinnati this afternoon, then dinner at that restaurant chain where DR Cillaliz had a bad experience recently.  I'd requested my birthday dinner there before that.  Tonight, my AAUW branch has their annual craft & talent auction - that's what I made the coffee cakes for yesterday.

There are, of course, plants whose seeds need a good toasting from fire to germinate.  While I wish you rain to put out your fires, the wild blooms next spring should be spectacular.

Silver lining thinking.

The doggies always get testy when I have a day off, such as today.  Little Mikey in particular gets impatient for me to get up, and then Buster insists on giving me my morning face washing (I do belong to him, after all), followed by Bonnie and Marty... although Bonnie spends more time washing everyone else's face than mine.

So I get up and get them their breakfast of doggie biscuits.  (Fletcher insists on staying with der B, although he does come and get me if I don't deliver his by hand.)

They never pest der Brucer for their morning goodies.

They also have their own places where they have breakfast.  Marty clambers onto my bed, Bonnie trots into the living room, Mikey dashes into the study, and Buster jumps up on der B's bed, leading to der B grumbling about the "crumb maker."  Every day, the same routine.

Then, when I settle in here at the computer, Buster settles in near me, either close by or directly under the desk.  As I noted, I am his property.

Today was interrupted by the appearance of a dark grey cat, spotted through the window.  It's the same cat that der B met a couple of days ago, and I've identified it as the cat from the McGulag next door, left behind by the Russian students after their summer jobs were over.  How the cat fares through the winter will be the question.  So far, she looks healthy enough.

I liked THE DAVINCI CODE much more than I thought I would. After the negative press at Cannes and lukewarm reviews from most of the reviews I read on-line, I was expecting something relatively drab and overlong. It held my attention from beginning to end, and I wasn't bored a second. In fact, I watched it a second time within a day of seeing it the first time and enjoyed the second viewing even more as more pieces of the puzzle seemed to fit together in my head.

I hadn't read the book ahead of time. I had read ANGELS & DEMONS which I thought was a grand adventure for about half the book and then began to fall apart and was totally ridiculous by the end.

There's a cute sounding movie on tonight on A&E: WEDDING WARS with John Stamos and the ever-gorgeous Eric Dane. I will be at my OLIVER! audition tonight, so the DVR will have to get it, but depending on when I get home, I think I'd like to see it tonight.

The CBS comedies and CSI: MIAMI are also new episodes tonight.

Ok. I've really got to get started on this Christmas thing. You'd think that when it all starts in September I wouldn't be surprised when it starts to creep up. I guess I know when my postal worker DH has to start going in two hours early and stay late two hours every day, it's time to get busy! (That was today, by the way.)

Laura, when I was growing up my mother always refrained from any (visible) Christmas preparations until after my birthday, so as to keep my special day from being absorbed.  I remind myself of that when I begin to get strung out over not having more done by Halloween or so.

TOD - One commercial I remember was really what today would be called a Public Service Announcement.  It ran about this time of year and it was all about how aliens (people from other countries, not Planet X, I presume) had to register by January 1, or 15th, or 31st, or something like that.  It had this creepy animation of an official-looking window (post office?) and paperwork crossing the counter, seemingly by itself.  Any other baby boomers remember it?

Over at another website, I've found a list of this year's twenty best food books (http://leitesculinaria.com/writings/features/best_2006.html).  Sadly, DR Cillaliz's book honoring her mother is not included, something I can only attribute to her not being in the NYC-based foodie circles, which can be terribly inbred.   :-\

Of the twenty, I have five.  Heat, by Bill Buford, is waiting to be read.  I enjoyed both The Reach of a Chef, by Michael Ruhlman, and The United States of Arugula, by David Kamp.  Anthony Bourdain's The Nasty Bits was spotty, being a collection of writings that had been in magazines elsewhere, but he's still a dang good writer (he, of course, would use spicier language).

The Omnivore's Dilemma (Michael Pollan) is the book I've mentioned several times here before.  Thoroughly thought-provoking, I find myself having to put it down frequently to ponder what I've just read.  I highly recommend it.

It's interesting how all five of these books are not cookbooks, but rather writing about food.

If any of you have foodies on your Christmas gift list, the above might give you some ideas.

TNT has been airing the LOTR Trilogy.  Night before last, they claimed to be airing the Extended Director's cut of "Fellowship of the Ring."

Maybe....but they trimmed it if they did.  I think they basically lied about which version they were showing.  The entire Lothlorien segment was the theatrical cut...not the extended cut.

Re:  "Brothers and Sisters"

SPOILER

SPOILER

I'm gonna say this knowing full well I'm probably alone but two things irritated me GREATLY last night.

One was the Patty Wettig character "Holly"...I'm tired of her.    Just tired of her.  This family should NOT have to go through her or associate with her or have any more dealings with her for any reason.

The more irritating and annoying is this writer's conceit about the military service requirement for the brother with a drug addiction.  The Army simply WOULD NOT want him back with his drug addiction.  Period.  They discharge soldiers for having addictions.  They wouldn't want him back based on every rule/regulation that I've found.

That whole "let's fight the Armed Forces for recalling soldiers who've already served" arc is so lacking in credibility that it makes me ache that such a fine show has taken such a horribly wrong turn in its story development.

I borrowed my sister's camera this weekend and it only has a 3x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom.  The camera that I've been looking at to buy has a 12x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom.  You can get up real close with that. :)

This camera is a relatively old model and inexpensive. It is some kind of Olympus, I think. The nice one I bought a couple years ago has burn spots on the lens, so I rarely even take it along any more.

Saturday's breakfast & matinee were a blast. They made the long, boring ride down more than worth it.
Alet & Benjamin were perhaps my favorites but Cason's  song had me in stitches. (Hi Cason!)

Angela's Ashes was okay but I found it on the depressing side. His second book, "Tis" is much better.

Roddy Doyle is a great writer. I love his Barrytown trilogy. Even the movie version of "The Commitments" was good. Great soundtrack.

I also like Brendan Carroll.  I have actually met Cecelia Ahern who wrote "P.S. I love you". She is the daughter of the Irish PM and she was in St. Paul doing a book signing session at Irish On Grand. She is a lovely person!  I have not read her most recent book, "If you could see me now" yet.

The reserve sounds lovely but not hte gunshots. I also agree with you and it does not make sense to me either as to why they are allowing hunting there.

The hunting is heavily regulated by the government. Only species considered "bountiful" are hunted.

Game hunting is a recognized method of wildlife management.

Fees paid by hunters are a large source of income to the government to support wildlife refuges.

Nicely put - if you ban hunting from state lands the voters will dry up the funds needed to support them.

der Brucer

Why do we hear plaints about the "poor deer" and "gorgeous snow goose" and nary a word about the "suffering catfish"?

Holly irritated me on BROTHERS & SISTERS, too, but to keep Patricia Wettig on the show, I knew they'd have to come up with something. Her husband Ken Olin is one of the executive producers, so she wasn't going anywhere and was going to have to continue to be involved intimately with that family.

I don't like the character much either, especially last night.

This life of leisure is too too.

I've just arisen from my nap, and now I am off to my chiropractor.

By the way:  I had a lot of fun watching the weekend "Thet Girl" marathon on TV Land.

The opening theme/montage (the one without the drearily thin choral vocal of the song) is one of the best ever from a TV show of that era, I think.

Very well-edited....beautifully scored....it's endearing and a time capsule for some of NYC (pre-WTC, too).

I'm here and caught up on todays posts!

How nice to see/read that DR Jane is having a good time.  I was a bit worried about you.

No more fires in the land down under!

Der B--I was the gal that felt so sorry for the fish my dad caught, I let them go when his back was turned.  Guess who didn't get to go fishing with him after that?

I'm still digging my way out of the email mess I now have.  Ugh.   Most are ads but I'm afraid I may miss someones email to me.

I really need to sit and play with my camera--take shots of the same thing at the same distance but with different settings so I can get a feel for it and what works.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, DR George!

We're back from our Christmas shopping errand in Cincinnati, dinner at Outback, and a visit with my mother-in-law.

DR Danise, this birthday has not been especially photo-worthy.  Pretty quiet and low-key.  Soon I'll be off with my basket of coffee cakes to put up for auction.  Purchase details at 11 (sooner, actually).

Der Brucer and I made a raid on the store where I work, taking advantage of some of the sales and a 5% coupon I had in hand.  While there, we also took advantage of a 25%-off-for-employees price reduction on a bunch of DVDs, including the first three Batman films.

I really do like where I work.

I recieved an e-mail today, threatening to bitchslap me if I don't show up in Los Angeles to see Brain from Planet X.

Well, my work schedule doesn't allow me to make the trip cross-country.

And der Brucer is too cheap to pay for the airfare.

Neither of which are good reasons, they are just excuses.

So I guess I'm up for a bitchslapping, and hang my head in shame.

I sure would like to see an East Coast production, though!!!

No, really!!!

Thank you, DR Adriana Patti!  Your new avatar is lovely.

I'm back from the craft & talent auction.  My coffee cakes sold for $8 apiece.  I bought some homemade turtles, some pretzels covered in white chocolate (DS Rob's favorites), an empty pie pan with a promise for a homemade apple pie (DH Richard's favorite), some hand made holiday greeting cards, and a packet of nearly-new gift bags.  That last item is always provided by one of the members who's the owner and lead teacher in a local nursery school.  She receives hundreds of presents each year and carefully recycles the gift bags as an auction item.  I bought a set of 6 assorted sizes for $8.

The Skip E. Lowe show was a total trip this evening.  Alet, Steve Moyer (our publicist), and myself all arrived around 4 at Beverly Hills High School - to join our dear castmate Lauren who had supposedly been there for about an hour already.  We then proceeded to wait in the green room - NO FOOD OR DRINKS - for another 45 minutes, at which point we were running way late (much to Alet and Lauren's chagrin).  Finally we got started up, and Skip was just raving about the show, Alet's ample hair and bosom (in the show, of course), asking Lauren about her formative years in NYC, telling me how I should be in Albee's "Zoo Story," and remarking repeatedly about how Kevin has put on weight.

A half hour (and many, many, many chuckles later), we were done and Skip tottered off into the evening.  He has promised to get me a copy of today's festivities, so that should be fun.

He also promised that in addition to this little show running 5 times a day for the next week, he will do some advertising for us at his live broadcast in WeHo tomorrow.  So, the Boy with the Betty Grable Legs strikes again!

I always feel a beat behind when posting on a forum....what is worse is when you are a beat ahead and everyone is still talking about a topic you thought was over and done with and you have moved onto something else and no one is listening to you any longer....

Boy, is that a 99th post or what?!

I never understood that!! A broken record would not repeat..It would screech or not play...how Broken is that record, in pieces? In that case It would not even go onto the machine!

I sound like Benjamin Kritzer LOL!

Well, technically, you are right.  Then let us hope we don't have to sound like slightly scratched records - the kind that repeat, that is.

Not sure where he disappeared to...

Living in the buffalo commons it is not easy to come by watching a quality live production of Shakespeare. I have only seen A Midsummer's Night's dream.

I recommend Rivals for you to read.
