Well, you've read the notes, you were wearing your gay apparel whilst reading them, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're just getting into their gay apparel and will be home in West Hollywood soon thereafter.

TOTD:

As mentioned the other day - I really like Bobby Vinton's version of "Oh Holy Night".  I also like the versions by Michael Ball and Linda Eder.

As a kid I loved "The Little Drummer Boy" - the Harry Simeone Chorale Version and also the later one by Johnny Cash.

I'm fond of "I Want a Hippopotomus For Christmas" and "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer". Other favourites are Frank Kelly's version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" and also the one by Alan Sherman.

My most played Christmas collections are those by The Carpenters, John Denver and a special collection by Mr Larry Moore.

Of the more obscure Christmas songs, Bobby Vee's "Electric Trains and You" is a delight.

I tried to get on the board last night but something was wrong with the cable.  I couldn't get to the topic.  I don't think it was the board itself because I saw a lot of people on it.

Work is a four letter word. Ugh.  I wish I didn't have to go either.

I bought 2 tickets for the raffle drawing the lotto is having on Jan 1.   I've got my fingers and toes crossed that I will be one of the winners.

Good morning, all!  I'm certainly glad I missed last night's performance!  The  sound problems would have had me raving more than I do usually.  I wanted to fly back to LA for the last performances and to be at the recording sessions, but since it's going to spread over three days -  I wanted to hang out with everyone - I'll trust the instincts of my Dear Friend BK and wait for a rough mix or the completed album.

Today my dad turns 85, and I need to call him and tell him I'm counting on there being an 86th; I'm not ready to let go yet.

My day consists of the things I didn't get to yesterday: NYPL and the New Mozart Edition, plus the start of a huge report on how to assemble from three libretti dated late 1902, 1904, and post-1916, a reconstruction of the original 1904 tour of BABES IN TOYLAND!

I'm always asking for vibes for me and my dad, but I'm terribly remiss about others at times, so here goes![move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]

RE: last night's MEDIUM.

I also loved it.

That part with marie doing the "airplane" was neat. I had never thought of that as the reason.

I also loved the whole storyline. It was unique and really interesting. It kept my interest throughout the entire show.

I'm just wondering about the ending.

It sort of ending in a weird way to me. Like i was waiting for a couple more scenes. Will this be continued?  To me it was not resolved.

And actually I think one would wear cha cha heels NOT kick heels with satin pants....I think.  DR MBARNUM should ask Laurie Mitchell, that is what she wore EXCLUSIVELY in THE QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE.

Another vote for the Larry Moore Christmas collection, which I play at Ye Olde World of Wisdom.  There are always lovely comments about the selections.

I like Christmas albums from Carpenters, Rosemary Clooney, and Giselle McKenzie.   BUT....my favorite Christmas albums of ALL are those by:

DORIS DAY and PAT BOONE.

And now, since we have our days free to play, we are about to leave (it's a gorgeous, beautiful day in NYC, well into the 50s) and play in Manhattan. We will see Macy's windows, Lord & Taylor's windows, the tree at Lincoln Center and an exhibit at the NYPL for Performing Arts.

Laters!

P.S. I doubt that Edisaurus has deserted us, I think she's just busy. Don't know that for a fact, just surmising on my part.

No, I think it was resolved as far as this episode is concerned, but I suspect we'll see this character again. MEDIUM is known for taking interesting characters and recycling them once or twice a season. Besides that 19th century butcher doctor, we see her brother from time to time, and that Texas policeman from the pilot has turned up in other episodes (and is turning up again soon, I read the other day).

No tree in our house.  Five dogs make having a tree, well, problematic.  We tried it once, pre-Fletcher, and the pack managed to make all sorts of trouble, pulling down ornaments and such.  If Fletcher found a tree in the house, he'd be sure to try to climb it!!!

Xmas music:  We have a tradition every time we decorate our Christmas tree...which happened last night...to play Gene Pitney's Greatest Hits (don't ask how it got started) and the original cast album of SHE LOVES ME!  Neither are traditionally Christmas, of course...but they're Cristmas to me.

I'm lean toward the traditional in Christmas music.  Der Bingle is always great.  Rosemary Clooney.  Sinatra.  I also like my Elvis Christmas album.  And I have a couple by cowboy singer, Michael Martin Murphy that are really great...where he plays more obscure Christmas carols and songs that are generally heard.

I also like choral pieces and Irish Christmas music.

Most current Christmas music by pop-chart or rock musicians (so-called) of the last twenty/twenty-fve years I have absolutely no use for at all.

TOD -

The New Christy Minstrels' "Sing Hosanna, Hallelujah!"
From the United Methodist Hymnal:  "Come Thou, Long-Expected Jesus" and "Once in Royal David's City"
Two Christmas songs that are not my favorites, but I like these versions:  Canadian Brass' "Twelve Days of Christmas" and Cincinnati Pops' "The Little Drummer Boy," with elements of "Bolero" mixed in.

Entire albums that I particularly like:

The New Christy Minstrels' Merry Christmas! (but not their Christmas with the Christys  :P)
Cincinnati Pops' Christmastime is Here and Christmas with the Pops
BK's Broadway Christmas and Hollywood Christmas
DR Elmore's compilation
As background music for parties, I like Kenny G's holiday albums

Title: Re:DON WE NOW OUR GAY APPAREL
Post by: S. Woody White on December 14, 2006, 08:01:03 AM
As long as we have our TOD, may I rant about something I find deplorable?

What is wrong with Christmas CAROLS?  Why must we have Christmas songs, but no carols, played in public places?  Is the notion of Christmas being a religious holiday so heinous that it must be banned?

At work, we have Christmas songs played over the sound system.  No carols, just the songs.  And there aren't that many of them.  Just how many times must I hear White-Christmas-Chestnuts-Roasting-Let-It-Snow-Winter-Wonderland-Christmas-Time-Is-Here in continual rotation?  (With the occasional interruption of I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus, of course.)

If the mention of Christ is so offensive, then play instrumentals!  Silent Night is a beautiful melody.  So is Carol of the Bells.  So are Away in a Manger, and I Saw Three Ships, and We Three Kings.  They don't need their lyrics.

Bette Midler has a new CD out for the season, Cool Yule.  Every track but one is a Christmas song.  So which track is the one that she really nails?  Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel.  The rest is just filler.

End rant.

HAPPY, HAPPY DAY TO DR TOMOVOZ.  I often find myself chuckling at one or other of your "private jokes" shared during your visit here.

CHRISTMAS ALBUMS:  Well, if you want something new, go to that site I mentioned yesterday:

http://bossanouveau.com

and order one or both of Jorge's holiday CDs.  They're absolutely lovely.  Sparkling Brasilian rhythms, brilliant sax and guitar work and enchanting vocals.  What more could you want?

Our Christmas Eve tradition used to be to put on Elvis' Christmas album and laugh hysterically at his over-the-top "interpretations", specifically those pick-ups on "Blue Christmas"--"I-ee-hi-hee-i'll have..." etc.   I of course love all three of the Percy Faith Christmas albums and to a lesser extent the Percy Faith orchestrated Johnny Mathis Christmas album (with the classic "Sleigh Ride"--speaking of which, does any DR know--I have never seen a published score of this song containing the "second bridge" [about Farmer whoever] and I've wondered for years if Percy wrote this himself and interpolated it into the tune).

Job vibes:  I had an IV last night for what could be a very lucrative new MD position (I'm talking salary, pension, benefits--unheard of in musician land).  Vibes appreciated.

Yes, Mr David Jansson as Richard Diamond was much better than Darren McGavin as Mike Hammer or Craig Stevens as Peter Gunn...although PG certainly had the BEST theme song.

Good morning dear Esteemed, creative, well-judging, and temerarious BK --

It has taken a few days to get settled back in to things here, to get caught up on some work, and to read through all of the great posts and pictures from the "Brain" weekend.

It was a real pleasure and an honor to greet some of the wonderful folks from this sight, and meet them in the flesh!  It was also very enjoyable to see some previous friends and acquaintances and meet some new cast members.

FJL - so it got there, right?  I have tracking numbers and all that jazz.

Apparently, the LA Times review of The Brain will be appearing tomorrow (it was supposed to appear yesterday, when it actually might have done us some good).  Considering I was expecting the worst, from what I gather from the little capsule review, the full review will be mixed to positive, so that's a plus.  He thinks rewrites are required if we're to move on with the show - I'm sure there will be rewrites if we move the show - it's what usually happens.  But, we did get a great pull quote even from the capsule review, which appeared today in the Calendar listings:

WILDLY FUNNY... WITTILY STAGED, SHARPLY CAST AND GRACED WITH SOME CATCHY NUMBERS.

TOD:

I love the Chieftains and Ricki Lee Jones rendition of "O Holy Night".

I also enjoy:

Hall and Oates' version of "Jingle Bell Rock".
Brenda Lee's "Rockin' around the Christmas Tree"
Bing Crosby's "White Christmas"
The Chieftains/Renaissance Choir "Once in Royal David City" and "O Come All Ye Faithful"

I do recommend two CDs:

The Chieftains "The Bells of Dublin"
Paddy Moloney with the Chieftains and Marco Frisina and freinds recorded a lovely album called Silent Night: Christmas in Rome. It has a rousing rendition of "Joy to the World" and a lovely version of Silent Night in four languages: German, Italian, Gaelic, and English.

No tree in our house.  Five dogs make having a tree, well, problematic.  We tried it once, pre-Fletcher, and the pack managed to make all sorts of trouble, pulling down ornaments and such.  If Fletcher found a tree in the house, he'd be sure to try to climb it!!!

What about an upside-down Christmas tree??

Well, I just performed a near-impossible feat - I just got off the phone with Mr. Bert I. Gordon, director of some of our favorite films of the 50s and 60s.  Mr. Ray Courts and I had been chatting and I always bring up Mr. Gordon, who has not, heretofore, been willing to do any sort of memorabilia show.  So, on a whim, I called Mr. Bert I. Gordon and I was so persuasive with him that he's agreed to do his first-ever Los Angeles appearance/signing at this February's Ray Courts show.  Very exciting, and I know a certain person who has "opted out" of receiveing Kritzerland e-mails, will want to book his ticket immediately, since Mr. Gordon directed his favorite film.

The last two computers I have bought didn't come with floppy drives, but I bought a Sony portable floppy for $40 at Office Depot. At the time, I had some programs and files I hadn't transferred to CD/flash drives, so I needed it.

Flash drives are so cheap now and hold tons of stuff.

I spent a lovely afternoon watching THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Very enjoyable with notably good from the cast. I especially liked Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci, and how great to see David Marshall Grant in a small part.

I think the character of Andrea's boy friend (played by ENTOURAGE's Adrien Grenier) was not well written, and I'm not sure returning to him was such a plus for her.

The transfer seemed a tiny bit grainy though the color was very good and the sound perfectly appropriate for a comedy.

I finished the afternoon with another episode of BONES from the DVD set. It was actually the same episode that was rerun last night on Fox (but I didn't watch it knowing it was coming up on the DVDs). Temperence is in New Orleans helping with corpse identification when she's an unwilling victim of a voodoo ritual which steals a day and a half from her and also frames her for murder.

Not one of the better episodes, frankly, as at least one of the murderers was pretty obvious.

Evening all.  I just caught up with posts.

Thank all for good vibes for my Mother and myself.  I still have not heard from my doctor.  Oh well.

I have a suggestion for the board--the archived files should have the dates they cover in the description.

It's still raining.  I guess that means it will turn cold in the morning.  I get a kick out of the dogs when it turns cold.  They look at me like, "why did you do that?  We want it warm again!"

I can well understand the Christmas tree problem.  Even if I was feeling better I don't think we would put a big one up this year because of Sheena.  This small tree I bought at the dollar store should fit the bill that at least we have a tree of some sort and if it gets destoryed, ten dollars is not that much to lose.

My two most favorite Christmas albums are both of The Manhattan Transfer's Christmas albums (CDs).  Their first was called The Christmas Album (http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Album-Manhattan-Transfer/dp/B0000028RY/sr=8-2/qid=1166137531/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/102-4691709-0642501?ie=UTF8&s=music) and their second, which was only released in the US back in October is called (appropriately) An Acapella Christmas (http://www.amazon.com/Acapella-Christmas-Manhattan-Transfer/dp/B000I0QJH0/sr=8-1/qid=1166137531/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4691709-0642501?ie=UTF8&s=music).  It's all a cappella and I think one of their best albums, overall...in my humble opinion. :)

In terms of ol' Mel G. it just shows how people don't give a crap what celebrities do - I'm sure his new film is as disgustingly awful as his last film - but people are people - it won't make its money back and the Golden Globe nominating panel is made up of PUBLICITY people, which should tell you everything you know.

I also love BK's "A Broadway Christmas" and "A Hollywood Christmas," as well as "Cabaret Noel:  A Broadway/Cares Christmas."  I have all of these packed away in storage, but I desperately want to find "Cabaret Noel" before our last Cannibal performance on Sunday.  I want to make mini-CDs of the song "Wishing You a Drag Queen Christmas" for all of the other drag queen Indians as a good bye gift!  I have the pictures and that'll be the cover!

I once re-wrote a Bert I. Gordon script that he was supposed to direct, I believe, but the financing fell through.  Sy Weintraub was going to produce it.  It was a FRANKENSTEIN script and a damned fine one, I might add.

I used to think the luckiest person in showbiz was Sir Andrew; now that I hear APOCALYPTO has been nominated for a Golden globe and that it's doing well at the box office, I think that drunken anti-semite is the luckiest asshole in show biz.

You're just resentful because you got passed-over as the arranger for the APOCALYPTO A CAPAELLA Christmas-Mayhem album.

I'm feeling much better today. I think in part because I remembered what I did to hurt my back. Ok, it was goofy trying to lift something heavy out of a box and having to strain and struggle to get it out. It didn't hurt until about 12-18 hours later. It's a relief to know it's a strain or a sprain and not a brain tumor or something equally awful....I didn't really think that, but one never knows.   I'm still going to the Chiro tomorrow.

Christmas songs....well it isn't a recording, but my favorite is Silent Night when we sing it at the midnight Christmas eve service.  Everyone has a candle and all the lights are turned down or off. It's a wonderful glow and a wonderful experience, especially when followed by walking out of the church to a lightly falling Christmas Eve Snow

All sorts!  it is a total dining experience with a walk in the gardens being usual between courses.  Never crowded nor noisy and booked for a year in advance at this time of the year. We've been going there each year for over 20 years now. (More than just once a year).  I've had my Christmas meal there for the past two eyars with friends and this time DP Colin is escaping his family obligations and joining us. Now that we are both in our sixties we feel it's time to please ourselves! (We've only had Christmas dinner togehter twice before in 30 years).

Good evening DRs and H/Ks --  Now that Arizona is an hour later than California, the wonderful zanies at "Brain Land" are just into the first act.  I'm sure a Will has been Bent, and that Zubrick has indeed pronounced the earthlings "styupid, styupid, styupid!!"

And DR elmoore has managed to burn into my little brain, that maddeningly catchy repeating-hook musical figure that introduces the title song, and recurs throughout the play.

I'm holding all good thoughts that tonight and the subsequent performances all go very well.  Our Esteemed BK and his entire team have really produced a wonderfully entertaining piece !!

Whew! Just got caught up with a week's worth of posts and am overwhelmed by the quantity and the quality! So many great pictures of the festivities! So many birthdays! So many travel dilemnas!

I can relate to the last; we left for Santa Fe last Wednesday. We were running late to make our plane out of Atlanta but still thought we had plenty of time, as we were still 45 minutes early. But after standing in line at curbside check-in, we were then told that Delta had a 45 minute cutoff time and we could no longer check our luggage outside...we would have to go inside. By that time we were 3 minutes plast the cutoff time. They wouldn't let us check our bags on a later flight because of security reasons. So instead of getting an 11AM flight, we took a 5:30PM flight. Since I wasn't the one running late, and we both had gone ot bed at 5AM and gotten back up at 7AM, I was pretty cranky. Plus Greg had already started getting a cold and shared it with me. ("Immunity" only works when you get somewhat of a reasonable amount of sleep.)

So we got there in time for the openig night party and then came back to our room and collapsed.

I think airports should make travelers aware of the cutoff deadline, as we thought you only had to get there early to go thru security.

But at least we DID get to go on our trip!

I thoroughly intended to send flowers for opening night. I brought the address of the theatre, I had a great LA florist that friends of mine there use---and then there was no time to do anything other than work the film and take care of publicity and screening details, since Peter was only coming in a few hours before our first screening.

I am thrilled that there will be a recording of the production made available! Yay!

I thought I had my main piece I was cutting approved yesterday. Then I had to change it all because 2 new TNT series were greenlighted, and their other original show, Saved, was cancelled.

The 2 new shows are "Grace" with Holly Hunter, and "Heartland" with Treat Williams, who plays a heart transplant doctor. The pilot is very moving. The Holly Hunter show is pretty weird; I hope I can get into it when I have more time to concentrate. I still hope to be working on The Closer next season, but they may pull me off and have me launch one of the new shows.

Since The Closer is the only series I follow, I hope I can stay with it.

In the middle of the day yesterday, as I was cutting Sex & The City episodics, we had to stop down and I loaded some Raymond episodes and cut a short tribute bump to Peter Boyle. It was a sad day---a fellow editor friend of mine's wife died, too. She went into the hospital to have a spot on her lung biopsied and died during surgery from an aneurism. She was my age. I don't know what he will do without her---they had been married probably 30 years.

We had good screenings in Santa Fe. At our second screening, I heard someone laughing at something Studs Terkel said. I turned around and saw Wavy Gravy, watching our movie!

There is a documentary in progress about him, and he was with the director and her boyfriend. I talked to them for a wihle after our screening, and she asked me if I'd like to come up to NY for @ 6 months and work on her film. Oh, if only I could win the lottery. I'm not sure I can do another labor of love so soon! Sure would be fun though.

Turns out Wavy's daughter lives in my little town of Marietta and is married to a plumber. So we may end up hiring a Gravy-In-Law to do some work on our house.
