I love camping and horseback riding and fishing and waterfalls and tents and campfires and everything about being outdoors. Part of this love comes from never having been bothered by insects. I love hiking and gutting fresh fish and waking up with the sunrise.

I thought of the perfect story to tell.

I enyoy horseback riding. Anytime I go on vacation, the first thing I look for is a place to go riding. I happen to be naturally good at it. Unfortunatly my mother is not, yet somehow she always got stuck being my escort.
One time we were at the June Lake Loop, and I dragged my mother riding with me. (I must have been 12ish). My mother got a horse that did not like being told to do, and would continue to lean down and eat the shrubs on the side of the trail. At one point her horse decided it no longer wanted to be on the trail and took off into the woods, with my mom yelling for help. Suddenly the guide's horse took off after my mom's, wthout the guide telling it to do so, so there was much shouting from him.  At that point all the horses began to wander around, except for mine (which I had wonderful control of, that horse got away with nothing I did not want him to do) and the 2nd guide's. The 2nd guide went off after my mother and the 1st guide and brings them back, and then has to round up all the other  horses. I found it quite ammusing, although now I realize that the horses were not trained well, and it could have provided a dangerous experiance.

DR MattH, re: nick from American Idol.

You are right, now i remember his original audition (since you mentioned he had tried out last year).  I don't know why but he was such completely unmemorable to me.  It's pretty easy to tell which contestants won't go far. And i guess i didn't peg him as going far.

To me the next ones out will most likely be haley and hopefully now antonella (although she may have another couple weeks in her).  For the guys i see jared.

I like Brandon a lot more than you.  I just love his look.

TOD: I used to go backpacking in high school. We used to own small camper vehicles. Now my idea of camping is Motel 6.

I do hike a bit, although not usually strenuous stuff. I don't walk very fast or get very far. I like to look at everything along the way. And take photos.

Cast stranded; 'Man of La Mancha' rescheduled
By Jesse Claeys Journal staff writer

Above everything else, the show must go on.

That is unless a blizzard strands the cast of "Man of La Mancha" in a small town in Minnesota.

"The show will go on under virtually any circumstance, except when the cast isn't there," explained Gary Zabinski, director of operations Jam Theatricals, presenter of Broadway at the Orpheum series.

And so was the case Thursday as the touring production of "Man of La Mancha" attempted to make it's way to Sioux City for a 7:30 p.m. performance at the Orpheum Theatre.

The performance went as planned Wednesday night in Duluth, Minn., Zabinski said. By midnight the set had been torn down and loaded into two semi trailers. A production crew of about five people then began the more than 400-mile drive to Sioux City. The "Man of La Mancha" cast of nearly 20 people stayed behind to get a good night of sleep in a hotel and leave on a bus in the morning.

By 10 a.m. Thursday the production crew arrived in Sioux City and set construction quickly began, Zabinski said. Things were not going so smoothly for the cast.

"We kept in touch with them by cell phone all through the morning as they were on the road. They knew interstates and roads were closing and they planned an alternate route. They reached a point when it became apparent far more roads had closed than they had thought and the headwinds and blowing snow made travel unsafe. They called around 2 p.m. and said they had to stop."

The cast stopped in Jackson, Minn., a town of over 3,500 people just northeast of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and spent the night at a hotel.

Fortunately, Zabinski said, "Man of La Mancha" has already been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m., March 12. Tickets for the original performance will be honored for the new date. Those seeking refunds are asked to contact the Tyson Events Center Box Office at 712-279-4850.

"It's always tough to cancel performance, but we are very glad and grateful a new date has already been scheduled. We're also happy everyone is safe."

"Man of La Mancha" was scheduled to perform in Lincoln, Neb., Friday night, but that show was also canceled due to the weather.

TOD - As a kid, I had a couple of great camping trips with my parents - one to northern Michigan and one to Mt. Desert Island, Maine.  Once I became a grown-up and realized how much work those trips had been for my mother, I decided that camping didn't sound like so much fun.  If I have to plan meals, shop, cook, and clean up, I'd rather be in my own kitchen than out in the woods.

IMPORTANT HHW NOTICE OF COMING EVENTS

A notice to Jane and Ginny and Jeanne and all the other Book Club mavens:

The times they are a-changin':

New York Times (http://coaches.aol.com/love-and-sex/feature/_a/pole-dancing-parties/20070226175309990001)
Quote
Pole Dancing Parties Catch On in Book Club Country
By TINA KELLEY, The New York Times

KINNELON, N.J. -- Johnna Cottam was showing a group of her girlfriends how to do a move called the Fireman.

As music by Shakira played, she strode up to grab the portable pole in the living room of her well-appointed lakefront home here, wrapped her right leg around it, swung wide with her left, and spun. When she reached the bottom, Ms. Cottam, in a pink "Got Pole?" tank top and black workout pants, tossed her hair back, mudflap-girl style.

"Kick it right out of the ballpark, just kick it," she encouraged her five friends and neighbors. Making way for the women to try the move, Ms. Cottam backed into a rocking chair draped with pink and purple feather boas that partly covered her twin sons' two teddy bears.

Pole dancing, once exclusively the province of exotic dancers, has flared up as a much-hyped Hollywood exercise craze, and has seeped into the collective unconscious through shows like 'The Sopranos' and 'Desperate Housewives.' A variant called motorized pole dancing, which occurs in stretch limos, has raised eyebrows as far away as Britain, where some female university students pole-danced as a fund-raiser for testicular cancer. And mini-poles have even been spotted as dance props at over-the-top bat mitzvah parties in suburban precincts.

I bet perky Miss Karen will be a star!

With no TV shows on the DVR to watch, I'll be DVDing it all day today between attending to errands.

I must watch the Criterion FIRE ON THE PLAINS. I got a box of Universal DVDs in the mail yesterday that I bought on sale from Deep Discount and among them are two DVDs of double feature Bob Hope comedies, some of which I've never seen (LOUISIANA PURCHASE, for example). And then there's LILLIAN RUSSELL which I may wait until tomorrow to watch since it's quite long. Seems more like a Sunday afternoon movie to me.

The conference is going well.  heard some great speakers, sang great music, etc.  Today, the wind is blowing quite strongly, I hope it dies down.  After today's festivities at the conference it will be time for an evening at the Magic Kingdom, which is always welcome.

LOL, DR MusicGuy - I agree with you!

In the summer of 2001, my DH and DS and I had a nice vacation in Colorado.  We spent several days exploring Rocky Mountain National Park from the comfort of the Alpine Trail Ridge Inn (http://www.alpinetrailridgeinn.com).  DS Rob was learning to use a digital video camera that DH Richard had borrowed from the local school district for the summer.  We took the hike around the perimeter of Bear Lake and enjoyed watching the beavers.  When DH Richard asked at the ranger station about them, the rangers said, "There aren't any beavers in Bear Lake."  DS Rob said, "I have video!"  One of my favorite pictures from that trip is of the rangers marveling at the footage.

Hiking/camping and I are not friends. I have only done the camp out thing once in my life, and it was the most miserable experience I've ever had.

I think I've told this story before, but at any rate, I was at camp. He had to hike about ten miles mostly up a mountain to get to the campsite in aheavily wooded area. The day for the hike/camp out was overcast and cool even though this was the middle of summer. Naturally, we didn't pack warm enough clothes for the weather, and around 8 p.m., it started pouring down rain. The canvas pup tent was waterproof but it was still sopping wet so that it you touched it, it would wet you good. So my shirt and my jeans had wet spots where I'd accidentally roll into the canvas during the night.

I had to go to the bathroom during the night, so you can imagine how uncomfortable it was in the wild and in the rain trying to take care of business.

Overall, I'd say I may have slept two hours that night, and then we had the long trek back to camp the next morning. I think once we got back, I slept the rest of the day and missed both lunch and dinner back at camp.

Ugh! Never again.

Regarding yesterday's topic, I listened to " A Wonderful Guy" and "Marlene Ver Planck loves Johnny Mercer."

For today's topic, I don't do camping.  The last time I went camping I was 15 (after the earth had cooled).  I didn't want to be with my family, so I slept in the van  and read the biographies of Jean Harlow and Rudolph Valentino by flashlight and Colemena lantern.  I like walking in the woods and exploring but not the rest.  Who knows, I might have liked it more if I'd been with someone other than my family.  But at 15 they were the last people I wanted to be with 24 hours a day for 2 weeks!

DR edisaurus - As for dinner this coming Wednesday (!!:)!!), could we move our meeting/supping time back by about 15 minutes or so?  I just received an invitation to the "President's Reception" that night at 9:30, and there was a personal message from the current SETC president welcoming me back this year (since I missed the past two years), and requesting my presence at said reception.  So, I guess I should show up for that.  It's being held at the hotel, so it's all close by.  Is that OK?

I have a favorite hike nearby, but after the past two years of virutally no exercise (and the figure to prove it!) I would really have to work up to it again. Part of it is solid rock and you have to use ropes to scale it. But it's a very rewarding view at the top of Little Kennesaw Mountain. One time we saw a flock of bluebirds, dozens of them. Very exciting! I am also surprised that you can find cacti on top of our mountain, although you don't see them growing wild any other places around Marietta. Guess it's a microclimate that's just perfect for them.

As for the Topic of the Day...

My parents would take me and three younger brothers camping quite regularly when we were kids.  Most of the time, the camping would consist of heading out to Solomons Island, MD, setting up a tent on the base there for the weekend in order for my father and his friends to go crabbing and fishing for the weekend.  Thankfully(!), since we were on a military base, there were proper bathroom and shower facilities.  However, we still cooked everything over a campfire or grill, and we did sleep in tents.

When we lived in Virginia the first time, the woman who used to babysit us had a place up  in Harpers Ferry, WV.  She would offer it to my parents if they wanted to get away for the weekend.  So, my parents would usually stay in the motor home, while my brothers and I would stay in a tent a couple hundred yards from the motor home.  Of course, there were those night when we would move the tent closer to the motor home if there were bears spotted in the area - and there usually were, so...  -I still vividly remember the shadow of a family of bears standing outside our tent one night - mama, papa, and two baby bears.  Thankfully, our baby-sitter - Mrs. Fischer, a wonderful woman who had grown up in Harpers Ferry - told us how to deal with the bears - which was basically to remain still and quiet.  ;)  -But she also told us that she had never come across a "mean bear" in all her time living out there, and that as long as we didn't keep any food in the tent...  -And since the motor home was in sight of the tent and vice versa, there was always someone in ear and eye shot of us, plus the light from the motor home helping to keep things not totally in the dark.

Favorite camping memory  -- went on a 2-week canoe trip down the Guadalupe River in the Hill Country of Texas (beautiful) when I was a sophomore in high school. 14 teens and a couple of chaperones -- met some of my favorite people in the world on that one.  I couldn't rough it that long now, but as a teen it was the greatest experience. ...now I'm gonna be thinking about Mark and Hank all day...and the rest of that crazy crew...good times...

I've never been to Grand Central Market...good to know! Do you buy whole beans or ground? (I figure someone who makes their own tobiko is a whole bean kind of guy!)

Normally, I buy whole beans and grind them here, but for some unknown reason, I asked for them to be ground there.  ??? I told the guy that I had a standard paper-filter drip coffee maker, but it looks like he gave me an espresso-grind - it looks a bit too fine to me.  But I only bought a 1/2 pound, so no biggie.

Grand Central Market is actually a bunch of little markets, food stands set up in one long "hallway".  Meat and fish vendors, bakeries, cheese (Murry's set up shop there), chocolates (Li-Lac), and Penzey's Spices(!!!!) even set up a retail stall there.  It's a great place just to go into and marvel at.  Yes, it's always quite busy, but I think that's part of it's charm.  *And the one "chandelier" composed of crystals hanging off an upside down tree-top is quite a sight to behold.

No need to sneak you in actually.  The head of SETCs went ahead and set you up with a Badge/Pass for the Convention.  -This way you could come and go as you please/need.  -And this way I wouldn't have to escort you in and out of the audition room.  So...  *And I believe with the Badge/Pass you'll have access to the Exhibit Hall (lots of free stuff!), the convention workshops, and even the keynote speakers, if you so desire - and had the time.

*Just keep in mind, they prefer that people only leave the audtion room - well, ballroom - between each group of 25 auditionees.  So, you'll be "stuck" in there for at least 45-50 minutes.  ;)

Quote
Partial nudity and simulated sex distract from wagner masterpiece
By John Farrell, Special to the Press-Telegram

WAGNER NEVER quite finished with his opera "Tannhauser."

It exists in several versions, and he was planning to return to it again, to perfect it, shortly before his death.

There are many who believe that it didn't need fixing. It begins with one of the composer's most celebrated, and powerful, overtures, and the philosophical terrain it explores - the clash between profane and pure love - was to become Wagner's central theme through almost all his operas.

That clash can hardly ever have been more profoundly, and more shockingly, expressed than in the new version of "Tannhauser" that opened Saturday night at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. It is the company's first production of the opera.

Sex - profane love if you are writing a textbook - has always been a part of opera, its driving dramatic force. It was expressed figuratively in early operas and more forthrightly in later ones. Now, in the 21st century, seeing the sex act itself on stage is hardly a surprise.

As audiences have become more adult, directors have decided to get their lovers into bed, naked and in compromising positions, more and more often. (It must be admitted, though, that there is still some squeamishness. It is only the young, slim and physically alluring who undress. The opera world is still not ready for sex between mature, and heavier, stars.)

Los Angeles Opera's "Tannhauser" is what is called the Paris version, where the overture is blended into the first act and there is a longer, originally balletic, bacchanal. Parisian audiences insisted on this. Those who prefer the wonderful original overture may object, but the idea works dramatically.

Instead of dance, though, director Ian Judge has decided to create, unambiguously, the sexual frenzy that Wagner's music implies. The stage, lit bright red, features Venus (Lioba Braun) and Tannhauser (Peter Seiffert) and about two dozen dancers, the men in red tailcoats, the women in red ball gowns.

Before long a lot of undressing starts and everyone, except Venus and Tannhauser, is naked (save for G-strings and discreetly hidden red shorts), with couples locked in athletic sexual positions. Male-on-male sex was also part of the eight to 10 acts of coupling proceeding all at once. The only persons who heard Venus' singing in the scene were listening with their eyes closed.

Hello, DR KERRY!
I quite like your anti-camping story of you curled up in the van, reading about Harlow and Valentino by flashlight and lantern. Thanks for the telling.

I used to camp with my parents and have done it once or twice as an adult, but it always strikes me as so much WORK! I'd rather just do a day hike and not have to lug a lot of stuff around.

Homicidal is one of my favorite William Castle "movies" - I can't quite call his creations "films" - and it also has Glenn Corbett and Richard Rust.

Jean Arless has the tiniest waist EVER in the movies - and while I didn't have it figured out by the end - i knew something wasn't right with Warren....something was pretty creepy about that guy...AND his new wife.

I can see that most H/Ks aren't exactly lovers of camping. I'm not, either, although I did go backpacking once in the Sierras and I enjoyed it. I think that one trip completely satisfied any desire I had for such an experience.

Several times I drove up to Yosemite, but stayed in a comfy cabin. Much more my sort of thing. I love the scenery and I even saw a bear--that was the highlight of the trip.

Here's a riding story that I don't think BK has ever heard. When I was in high school, my friend Lulu (Lolo in KRITZER TIME) wanted to go horseback riding. I don't think she'd ever been on a horse, but I certainly had; I'd had riding lessons as a little tyke. She didn't have any serious problems with her horse, surprisingly. But I soon had a problem: I was wearing a pair of stretch denim jeans, which started to split at the seams. And split, and split, and split. There was really nothing I could do to stop them. We were riding along a freeway, no less. All I could do was ride back to where we started, return the horse, and get into Lulu's car. We both had a nice ride (aside from my profound embarrassment), and fortunately, we got back home without incident (unusual given I was with Lulu). Of course, I felt quite mortified at the time.

Hin all, back for a few minutes before I head over to Fred and Skip's place.

SPRING AWAKENING....I can't say that I loved it.   Being on stage was fun, I don't feel like I missed anything and my seat was in a place where the seat in front of me was often occupied by a cast member, the seat behind me was a cast member and two seats down from me was a cast member. So when they were singing harmony it was really a pleasant experience.

Duncan Sheik played the guitar for the performance, so he was about 6 feet from my chair.

Jonathan Groff cannot sing a line with out spewing out a raft of spit. I'm really not trying to be rude, but it got distracting after awhile and I was trying to find a time when he sang without seeing water droplets...didn't happen.

I guess if I was in that teen/twenty range with the angst etc I would have liked it more. I enjoyed most of the songs.  I can't say I'd go again.  Now the girl sitting next to me was there for the 45th time.  Of course she saw Urinetown 200 times and Wedding Singer 140 times, so... the funny thing is she said she had never talked to cast members and has never stood by a stage door because she isn't that sort of person...interesting

TOD:  I have some memories of camping with my family when I was young, and we lived near Los Angeles.

Now, the closest I get to camping is the DVD of the perpetual fireplace...you know, the one that some TV stations broadcast during the December holidays?  Except that it's an indoor fireplace on the DVD, so it doesn't really count as a campfire.  And it's not that interesting for repeated viewing.  But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln...

We have lots of kinds here at HHW. Makes it interesting. Do you know we're called Hainsies/Kimlets or H/Ks?

Yes, the creation of the one and only Tony Walton, of Broadway and movie fame, and friend of BK!

Ah...another mystery explained!  Thank you.  There ought to be a new members manual [and a free toaster!] for the newbies.

I can't review "X" yet because I haven't ordered it yet, and when I do, I'll be ordering the Shire disc at the same time, so I imagine BK will send them out together when the latter is ready in a few weeks.

François, if you need something to listen to later this evening, I'm on Showtime this week. I'll be sending out an e-mail to the general list of people later but I saw you on and wanted to let you know. I'm almost 50 minutes into the show (near the end). I don't know when it will be up on Listen Again but you can check later this evening. It's my review of The Fantasticks.

Dinner is ready so I'm outta here.

No, don't know BK at all.  Just knew OF him from purchasing most of his previous CD releases [from previous labels, as well].  And his occasional posts at All That Chat - one of which led me to the Oscar party here last week, which led to lurking, which led to...CRAZY ADDICTION!!!

There are two tracks on the BRAIN CD that I have played over and over: Kevin's solo in the first act, and Mr. Clark's hilarious greeting and scolding (and singing) to the audience that opens the second act.

And Larry, your orchestrations are "the bomb" (to quote Randy Jackson from IDOL; I'm not much on modern hip talk, but I'm assumning that means magnificent.)

Aw, shucks, DR Matt H!  What a kind thing to say.  Thank you. I agree with you about BJ's act two opening tirade.

I am back from a very looooong day, and I still have band parts to copy tonight.  I'll catch up and vanish.

Yes. When you said you'd lurked a while I assumed you'd picked up our HHW terminology, but you really hadn't lurked that long.

The new members manual is the Kritzer trilogy. Best way to get to know BK and many of the little expressions he and we use.  (WHAT??? You haven't READ it? Oh, of course, it'll arrive with your two CDs.)

Let's see, what else do we need to tell him?

DR Elmore, do you use computer programs for copying parts? If so which one?

I put myself through college as a copyist and suffered what we can to call "monk neck" many times, from staying in a cramped position for hours, transposing and copying with india ink to vellum paper.

DR edi, I use my hand.  I do clear clean copy, I double check like mad so there are few errors. and I don't need to proof my work.

Oh gosh i see i have a lot of pages to catch up on. 10 from last night, and now 9 more today! Yikes!

I will say that the parking gods were looking favorably on me today.  My mom and i went to the hospital this afternoon to visit someone.  Yesterday we had 30+ cms of snow. And the area where the hospital is located is horrible for removing snow.

They had not removed any snow from the parking spots. And the situation was quite dire. Many cars had 3+ feet of snow surrounding them. And those that were parked were all at weird angles with tons of snow around them. I don't do diagonal parking.

Anyhow we go there a lot and one of my favorite spots was empty (1 short block walk and at the corner of a street). IT did not have mounds of snow on it, just slushy. Although it wasn't quite long enough to park in.

So i took out my shovel and made the spot better. That only took like 10-15 minutes. And the spot was decent when i was done.

And when i got to the hospital i called my uncle (who was coming to the hospital later to visit). We agreed to leave when he was arriving. And we handed off the spot to him.

I felt so lucky.

And last, but definitely not least, those vibes worked -- I got a call from San Diego Musical Theatre and they want to me come back and read for Ethan again for The Full Monty!!!  The call back is on Wednesday, the 21st -- so I'll be calling for a buildup of vibes until then.  :)  Just thought I'd let all of you know - and of course I will keep you posted!  Hee-hah!!!

I have no real interest in Spring Awakening.  Cilla - you are obsessed with Curtains!!!

But not as obsessed as some girl who would go see Urinetown 200 times and The Wedding Singer 140 times - my bafflement comes from where does such a person get the MONEY to see a show that many times?  And why would they WANT to?  I mean, I saw A Chorus Line many times during its B'way run - like maybe ten.

I saw PIPPIN and A CHORUS LINE up to about twenty times each, but most of the visits were mostly through bumming off extra tickets from friends or theatre bus trips.

I can recall reading the posts on All That Chat written by kids who attended RENT at least twice a week!  Talk about obsessed!  Not to mention misguided.

I love camping, though I haven't been out on a trip for about five years.  What I really liked is the deep woods portaging I did a few times with friends, spending over half a day just to get in to a site and then back out again.  When you are out that far, it's just amazing how quiet it is.  And just as amazing is how a group of rowdy people will eventually become respectful of the quiet surroundings and begin to go about the day like monks on a silent sabbatical.

See, Francois - I'm not the only one, re Brokeback.  I didn't hate it, mind you, I  just didn't find it anything other than ordinary and it never involved me emotionally.

Gee!

G*d forbid you'd be THE only one not to care for that movie! Well, it's sure is ordinary since it deals with cow-boys and nothing exciting happens to them at all, except that they fall in love (big deal), have to hide it from society (dull) marry and pretend to be "normal" (so what?!) and then one is killed because, so it seems, of his sexual orientation (Nothing to write home about! Happens everyday!)

I do believe it DOES help a lot if one is slightly"gay concerned" to be emotionally moved by the whole film and  cry during the last minutes! "Straight" people might be more difficult to be "convinced"!
But that's alright! One can live without having to like that film!
We're not Miss Coulter! We're.... "tolerant"!

Just thought Hollywood had guts to produce such a film in our days and age!

Am I too verbose? :D

...Apparently, they were giving out two tickets per person... So, the "smart people" at the front of the line brought their children with them - who, apparently, since the have "kid-friendly" nights, were also entitled to two tickets (per person).  In any case... We did have a sort of fun time waiting along 125th Street.

*And my roommate bought me dinner at Manna's, so that was nice.  And the peach cobbler was very good today.  -You betcha I ordered dessert!

Today, DB (Dear Bloog) and I buried three Slinkies on the playground. I wonder how long before all three of them are dug up.

We also buried two keys that go to the swimming pool and a mailbox at an apartment complex Bloog used to live at. Lately, Brody has been looking for the key to fit the lock on the gate so he can "get out of here." He was convinced that the key I keep on my shoe (so I don't lose it) went to the gate. He kept asking me for my key, so I let him use it. He was shocked when it didn't open the gate. Now he and his accomplices think that the key in Brandon's dad's car will open the gate.

We buried one key right next to the gate and the other in Brody's favorite digging spot. Now let's see how long before he digs them up and tries to escape again.

DR Cillalliz - Ah, yes, Mr. Groff's spittle.  Some nights it's bad, some nights it's really bad.  A friend of mine got spit on when he saw the show - and he was sitting in the fifth row!

I've always wondered if that's something that voice teachers and coaches - and even conductors - ever try to teach/prevent.  There are a couple of spitters out there, including my beloved Hugh Panaro.  -And since most of Lestat was dimly lit, any time he spit, it always caught the light.  Howard McGillin also used to spit - I remember it during Drood and The Secret Garden.

In any case...

Spring Awakening is what it is.  I'd have to say I was more taken with the whole "experience" of it, rather than the piece itself.  -And from a musical standpoint, Kim Grigsby has done some wonderful vocal work with that cast.

And, frankly, I think the finale seems kind of extraneous.

Well... that's why some pit players play with baseball caps.

*Actually, they usually were ballcaps if the sound designer chooses to mount the mics on the brim of the cap.  -At least for the violins and violas.

And during the original run of Les Miz there was so much stuff rolling into the pit - including actors! - that they started putting netting over the pit.  Alas, when Nell Carter lost her balance in DC on stage at the National Theatre in DC during one of the runs of Ain't Misbehavin', there was no net...

LOL François.  Granted the script was out of the ordinary, it was the delivery that seemed ordinary to me.  I thought Jake Gyllenhaal did a great job & should have been nominated for best actor, more so than Heath Ledger.  I could feel his anguish & think the film might have been improved by focusing more on his character.

It is great the movie industry dealt with this subject.  When we saw FAR FROM HEAVEN we walked away wishing it had focused more on the Dennis Quaid character & what he was going through.

I totally agree with you on all levels! I think Gyllenhaal should have been nominated for best actor! On the other hand, Ledger's character's is much more difficult to portray. I even felt for his wife, who, in the movie, happens to be his real wife too! The last scenes have wonderful acting and heartbreaking emotion (to me) conveyed by the actors playing "Gyllenhaal's" parents!

Far From Heaven is plain terrific!

The Sundance Channel has begun the third season of SLINGS & ARROWS.  I missed the first episode and tonight was a repeat of the second.  This year the main play is KING LEAR, which has parallels to my two brothers and me, and the star playing Lear is dying from cancer with 2-3 months to live.  It's a very moving story line.  The actor playing Lear is William Hutt, who has been a major star for the Stratford Festival in Ontario for the past 40 years.  The other play in production is a musical about a Canadian crack whore directed by the companies avant garde director, played by one of the writers of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE.  What a great series!  If you haven't seen this series, Seasons 1 & 2 are now on DVD and you shouldn't miss them.

Speaking of old, I’m reading about the latest identity theft in my AARP magazine (for folks 50 & older) .

Elmore pay attention.  Seems identities are being stolen after someone dies.  Suggestions:

Mail copies of the death certificate to all three credit-reporting bureaus; Equifax, Experian 7 TransUnion & all credit issuers to cancel accounts.

Cancel the driver’s license to prevent duplicates from being issued.

A few weeks after taking those measures, run a credit report to ensure there’s no suspicious activity.  To receive a free report from each bureau…..www.anualcreditreport.com

ANYWAY - glad to hear the BK Report on THE LUCY DESI COMEDY HOUR.

Tallu in The Celebrity Next Door is my favorite (written for Bette Davis who hurt her back, and quickly rewritten for Bankhead.)

My second favorite is when the Danny Williams family visits and rents the Big House and it's a mess ending with Lucy in bed with Danny.  Of course it's all very innocent.  Marjorie Lord marches in and does her best face and I am convinced she thought the audience was laughing at her....but  believe me - it was Lucy all the way.

When I kept seeing Debra Messing's stage mouth on W/G - I was trying to remember where I used to see it.....Ms Majorie (ain't I funny) Lord as Kathy Williams was doing it almost 50 years before.

But then Marjorie WAS funny...and beautiful....

Just heard DR Ben's review of The Fantasticks over at Radio Whales (SHOWTIME) and they closed it with that gorgeously melodious song from the show:

(As Beverley says "So nice to have back, Ben!")

When the moon was young,
When the month was May,
When the stage was hung for my holiday,
I saw shining lights
But I never knew:
They were you.
They were you.
They were you.

When the dance was done,
When I went my way,
When I tried to find rainbows far away,
All the lovely lights
Seemed to fade from view:
They were you.
They were you.
They were you.

Without you near me,
I can't see.
When you're near me,
Wonderful things come to be.

Every secret prayer,
Every fancy free,
Everything I dared for both you and me.
All my wildest dreams
Multiplied by two
They were you.
They were you.
They were you.

And now "How High The Moon" by dear Ella!

How can my night go wrong? (4:50 am here!)

I really enjoyed the music. Much more in person than on the CD. In part because where I sat on stage it was surround sound harmony hearing the real vocals not just the music through the sound system.

Kim Grigsby was barefoot! That made me chuckle. I was also impressed by the number of cast members that took a turn playing the piano, and it wasn't fake playing, I was sitting right by it so I could tell

I'm back from CURTAINS. They have really cut a lot since Thursday night - 10 minutes to be precise! I'm hoping to see it one more time at some point in the future so I can see where it ends up.  It has really been fun watching it take shape and Rupert had time to talk tonight which was a very nice surprise.

Apparently there are still more cuts in store for Tuesday, but what they've done in the past couple days has really tightened things up.  The audience was VERY receptive and stopped the show at least twice and I think three times.

I'm really not obsessed with the show. It's just the first time I've ever had a chance to see a show in progress like this, where it's the writer, composer and director actually re-writing the show as it is put together.  The process fascinates me and I genuinely like the show.  I can't imagine seeing the finished product over and over, but seeing it come together is really pretty cool.

Well, I'm not DR FJL, but...

As long as there's not a street fair going on on 9th Avenue and no parade down 5th Avenue, I'd say allow 45 minutes tops to get to LGA in the morning.  You'll probably make it there in 30.

And be sure to check if you can sign up for stand-by online.  I was able to do that on Northwest when I flew back from Memphis a few weeks ago.  -And that really came in handy.

Cilla - I usually fly out of Newark, and have only flown out of LaGuardia once in several years, and that was with a cab driver who got totally lost, so it took close to an hour. :(   Maybe Jose or Larry could answer how much time to leave on a Sunday morning.  In any event, I'd make sure the driver knows how to get to LaGuardia

Thanks again.

It leaves at 11:00 am or so, I'll have to look.  I am checking a bag, so I'm not sure standby is an option.

You can still sign up even when you're checking a bag.  You might as well get in the queue while you can, especially if you're planning on getting there early anyway.

*On NWA's site, the stand-by option comes up when you do the online check-in.  When I did that, there was an option to sign up for standby, and all the possible flights came up.  Again, might be worth a try.

I spent the remainder of the evening watching Kon Ichikawa's FIRES ON THE PLAIN. Brutal, visceral, and unforgettable images on the horrors of being on the losing side of a war. Mostly beautiful transfer, too, though the audio level was pumped up so high, I thought my center speaker was going to explode before I could turn down the volume.

How can anyone afford to go to that many shows?

I do admit I saw Urinetown 3 times, but that was because I was taking people to see it who I thought would like it. It was fun to see it with diifferent leads and compare.

A lot of them do the ticket lotteries over and over again - so they're only spending about $20-22.00 per ticket.  However, I know some people who pay full-price over and over again.

When I was with the second national touring company of Mamma Mia!, they had a "Super Fan" who flew to each opening in each city it played for the first two years of the tour.  And she always paid her own way.  Now that I would call "obsessive".

Oh... I did see the Broadway production of Passion five times: twice in previews, once shortly after it opened, once a few months in, and then closing night.  So...  But some may consider that madness rather than obsession.

*And talk about a show that went through quite the transformation from the first preview to opening night!

I felt well enough to go on our outing with friends (it really was a 48 hour flu---exacty!). We went to a restored theatre about 1/2 hour north of Marietta. It has had a nice restoration job...not extraordinary but not embarrassing, either.

I went with a group of preservationist friends, including our architect, who has been invovled with a few theatre projects. Afterwards, we came back and watched the DVD that DR Cillaliz sent of the restoration of her theatre in Sioux City. They were salivating over what a fantastic job that was done there. Their only complaint was that they wish the show had been longer...they could have watched it for hours!

It was both inspiring and depressing, because we know that our theatre in Marietta will never achieve anywhere near the level of detail of restoration that we saw on the DVD. The owner doesn't even want to get the tax breaks of doing a proper restoration because he likes to put cheap, ugly finishes on his buildings and doesn't like people telling him what to do. And he's not even paying for any of it!

Their initial fundraising goal has been met, so it will be interesting to see where it goes from here. I would love to get involved with that project, but there's way too much baggage involved, so we will stay away...

Speaking of spit makes me think of the years I spent packing up our pops orchestra and how much I appreciated the brass players who brought newpapers to drain their spitvalves on instead of just letting it spew all over the floor...the music stands...and the electrical cables I had to wrap up by hand.

I usually handed out the paychecks to the players at the end of the job. The "neat" players always got their checks first!
