Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Good, and now it is time for you to post until The Bad and The Ugly cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: PETRICHOR!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
Dino hasn't been here for ages. Perhaps we should do the LIMBO in his honor.
-
Now that was a way to end a night of posts!!
-
My phone has rung only once this entire evening. Will it ring again?
-
And a very happy haineshisway.com birthday to our very own Miss Barbara Deutsch.
-
Did Barbara Deutsch register here on HHW as "bdapp?" If she did, she only posted four times and those were two years ago!
-
A Very Happy Birthday to BK's very own Barbara Deutsch!!
-
Also a Very Happy Birthday to bdapp (if she's a different person than BK's very own Barbara Deutsch ;)).

Now that was a way to end a night of posts!!
And congrats (for no other reason than "because") on your 700+ posts! :D

I forgot to mention, I think, that I was on the south side of town before my other post house closed---they were still working when I came back @11---so I finished the Act II notes, except 2 for which I had questions.

Der B---the puppeteer friend who is on GOOD EATS from time to time is Matt "Lucky" Yates. I couldn't find out what episodes he was on from imdb, but I did find something that might interest DR George:
(1998) Appeared in the world premiere of "Cannibal! The Musical," the stage adaptation of Alferd Packer: The Musical (1996). Some footage of the play appears on Troma's DVD of Alferd Packer: The Musical (1996); Matt Yates can be seen bringing the horse on stage at the beginning of the "Shpadoinkle Day" musical number.

This week we have watched an enjoyed
"Texasville" (wonderful to watch a week or so after "The Last Picture Show").
and "Colour Me Kubrick"
Music. I've been compiling a "Soundtrack" for "Texasville"as there was no official one released. A few weeks ago I compiled a new "soundtrack" for "The Last Picture Show". The "official" soundtrack had only about half the songs used.
My current project is compiling a Cd of songs that The Beatles "gave away "to other singers or were issued as singles by other artists. eg "Michelle", "World Without Love" and songs by Mary Hopkin and Badfinger.

I also see that 3 of our puppeteers were in the muppet movie ELMO IN GROUCHLAND.

You can wait until BK re-releases them on Kritzerland...or know someone who has a set of them (and who has easy access to them ::)).

Maybe the Grand Mensch himself will offer, since I have a complete collection of the books of Kritzer. But if not...

That's not legal George. You know none of us on this site do that sort of thing.

I know where all my CDs are...but I don't know which box that the CDs are in...yet. I (still) have about 50 or 60 boxes of stuff down in my living room. ::)

FRUIT OF THE DAY
(http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL242/891350/14316125/236455398.jpg)
A professor at CCNY for a physiological psych class told his class about bananas. He said the expression "going bananas" is from the effects of bananas on the brain. Read on:
Never, put your banana in the refrigerator!!!
This is interesting.
After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again.
Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.
Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.
But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.
Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.
PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.
Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.
Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.
Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.
Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.
Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.
Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.
Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.
Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.
Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.
Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.
Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.
Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.
Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!
Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!
So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"
PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time! I will add one here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth. Amazing fruit !!!

Last night Amy/Edi asked
I just listened to DR Ben on Radio Wales...what a melodious voice! I might have to snag him as a narrator one day.
Ben, where do you record your segments?
Currently I do it in our bedroom with a microphone connected to the computer and a shareware recording program called Audio Record Wizard. I then burn the reviews to a disc and mail it to our friends in Cardiff. When the whole thing began I recorded the segments over the phone. The producer would call me around 7am (Noon Cardiff time) at my office. Since I was the only person in at that time I would sit at my desk and record the segments. It became easier to record them on my computer and send them out. For a while, instead of burning them to a disk I sent them as sound files in an e-mail. E-mails can get lost or blocked or erased so the disc seems to be the best option.
Don't tempt me with offers of narration. Even though it's not "acting" I love that kind of stuff :D
-
Ah, Bruce is back. When I got to this page he had disappeared and it was just Laura and me.
Today I had freeze-dried strawberries and an apple in my oatmeal. Very good. And the ever present cup of black coffee.
-
I just finished listening to the OCR of Fiddler on the Roof (1964). I'm now listening to the OCR of The Rothschilds, a score I really like. I've never seen the show but it seems to fall apart at the end.
After The Rothschilds I have the 1995 London Cast Recording of Mack and Mabel with Howard McGillin and Caroline O'Connor, the OCR of Forever Plaid (one of Laura's favorite shows), the OCR (1960) of The Fantasticks, the Music Theatre of Lincoln Center revival cast recording of Annie Get Your Gun (Ethel, Bruce Yarnell, Benay Venuta and Jerry Orbach) and the OCR of Ain't Misbehavin'
Don't know what we will do this evening after dinner. Channel 21 is in the midst of fundraising so our usual Friday night As Time Goes By viewing is on hold. We have other material to watch.
Saturday Anthony will be in dance class and Sunday we are having dinner at an upscale Chinese restaurant called Xing.
Off to finish my morning chore.

I am hoping that when DR MusicGuy's hand is all better, he might come and treat us to an evening of piano music on the new grand piano.

Perhaps after DR Sandra and I get our lunches at Einstein Bagels and I drop her off, I might go to the arboretum and walk around for a while. The fact that they are having their member's day plant sale would have nothing to do with it, of course.

DR MattH, i always fast forward through the show as well. Takes less time! The person who i was really surprised at was sabrina. I know that we have not seen much of her backstory. But i really thought she was one of the better singers. I don't think that she would have won. But i am sad that she didn't even get to make it to the top 12.
Of course the producers are very predictable. They have haley standing there with sabrina (and we all think haley is going home because of her poor comments). And we have sanjaya with sundance. They always love to make shocking vote-offs!
I think the most shocked person there was paula.
I wonder if haley stayed because of simon's harsh comments to her. I really don't understand it otherwise. But i am so happy that antonella is gone. Never liked her. I also am happy jared is gone. He seemed nice enough. But he never grew on me.
I am a bit surprised that sundance is gone. After his first audition, he seemed untouchable. The message boards were flooded with adoration for him. And now he hasn't even made the top 12.
I am curious to know whether the men or the women have the biggest following. That will determine if haley goes home next. Since sanjaya is apparently popular, i guess he will have a few more weeks. Unless the women are much more popular than the men.

By the way, it would be too late for me to plant said garden mat -- these things would be blooming now (or very shortly) here.
It is not a very good wildflower year here. We didn't get rain early enough in the winter for the things to germinate. Usually my yard is ablaze with color in February, but this year, bleh. Not as bad as last year, though.

Hey can anyone who knows tell me if GHOST WHISPERER and CLOSE TO HOME are repeats tonight. My tv guide has GW as a repeat and CTH as new.
I really with that cbs.com had "new" written in front of their new shows. It would really help. Thanks!

DerBrucer, be sure to plant some caterpillar host plants in your garden as well!
What would work that winters well without looking like a weed?
The Grandlads parents (and the neighbors) take a very dim view of my attempts at "native plants" - they think a front yard in the woods should look like a green at Pebble Beach. There were many complaints because I let the wild blackberries grow. The idea is to use as much fertilizer as possible and water frequently so the chemicals can wash into the protected marshland behind the house - get enough poisons in the creek and maybe we'll be rid of those pesky herons.

Speaking of Tivo, they've formed a partnership with Amazon in which subscribers can rent or purchase certain digital recordings at Amazon which will then be downloaded directly to their Tivo units. Right now, the selection is not yet open to all that Amazon sells, but it promises to grow. And while the rental idea seems okay, I'm not crazy about the "purchase" option: it seems that anything you buy can be burned to a DVD, but that DVD will be playable only on the device on which it was created. I'm not yet sure what the advantage of buying a digital recording through this program would be. But I'm going to shop through their listing this morning and rent something for tonight and see how that part of it works.

DR MBARNUM,
I asked my LA Man About Town about Armenian restaurants, and this is what he said, should you need any more recommendations:
The place for Armenian food is Glendale, which now has a large minority (approaching majority) Armenian population. The place I frequent is Carousel, 304 N. Brand (Brand is the main drag of Glendale, a fun strolling street). Mid-priced, even lower-mid, for very good dinners with lots of food. Go early for small party dining on the front patio. Go after about 8:30 (at least on the week-ends), if you can get in, for belly-dancing and ten to twenty parties of a dozen or more people at a table, all from one family, having a family feast. Middle east partying at its best.
A slightly more expensive place, similar to above re early/late dining, is
Mandaloun, 141 S. Maryland Street @ Harvard, also in Glendale. I've not been there, but it is well regarded, and may even rock more heavily late at night.
Hope you find someplace you enjoy.
-
Of course, I was disapppointed more in SUndance's performances on the show. Of his three semifinal rounds, I really only thought he did well in the second week. The first and third weeks were weak, often off pitch and this week in particular, he seemed rather desperate.
Of course, his skills are herculean compared to Sanjaya's, but obviously the public is voting there for something other than singing talent or on-stage charisma.
Haley won't stay around long, but I can't be too upset with her selection for the Top 12 since she's the closest we're going to get to a musical theater singer this season. And as there is a glut of R&B singers in the top 12 this year, I don't mind her in the mix at all just for diversity.
Melinda is my favorite, of course, but Jordin has risen to be my second favorite during the semifinal rounds.

I have to admit being fiercely jealous that you're getting to see THE CLOSER months in advance of the rest of us. Of course, you're working, and for us it will be PURE pleasure, but I'm jealous nevertheless and, of course, very excited to know new episodes are coming to us in a few months.
-
I'm heading down now to clean up a bit before I go out to do my Friday errands.

Good morning, Miss Karen. I did have a mix of Quaker instant banana cream and strawberry cream oatmeal this morning in honor of the pictures, but no, I shall not comment.

nothing in the DVD player (it confuses and frightens me like all this high tech stuff -- too many different remotes and things you have to punch, so I have to have the leprechaun around to do TV)....

DR Edi ~ What system do you edit on at work? Do you edit at home? If so, a system -- or software on a computer? Just wondering what the pros use and recommend. I dabble with the editing now and then using I-Movie on a laptap. Case uses the Windows software on his laptop.

Thanks for the Armenian info DR Jeanne. I have not made it over to Glendale as of yet, during my LA visits...maybe this time I will! I believe Artesia has a large Indian population, so that is a place I had thought about checking out as well.
I think I should have scheduled a longer vacation! There is so much I want to see in the area.

I, dear friends and readers, am annoyed.
This morning I awake at an early 6:30am, drag myself out of a nice warm bed, grab a mere granola bar for breakfast, walk to the metro, take the train to my school, walk to my class, and find a note on the door that says the following:
"Music 111 has been cancelled today, Friday March 9, because
Dr. Henderson could not be present. The class will resume next friday. Please read chapters 5, 6, and 7 and be ready for a quiz."
So, It is understandable that i am annoyed. I might be outraged later, but it is too early for such extreme emotions.
-
What's annoying is the quiz part. Having already heard stories of "Dr." Henderson, I must say he's on my list of big idiot teachers.
-
I wanted to sleep a little longer, but the phone rang and that was that.

George, Matt H, Vixmom, & Singdaw thank you for the good wishes.
Miss Karen, thanks for asking. Keith’s mother said to wait until she gets home before we call again, which won’t be until later today. His brother will be at the hospital around 9:30 & I’m sure if there are any problems we will hear from him.
Sherlock if anything is worse. It is very difficult to keep a puppy calm and jumping up & down isn’t doing him any good. We have scheduled another doctor’s appointment for Monday. If he isn’t better I expect x-rays will be taken.
-
DR Edi ~ What system do you edit on at work? Do you edit at home?
I've been using AVID for the past 15 years...I worked on the first one in Atlanta. I freelance, so I work at a variety of post houses. I bring a lot of work to them, so they will also let me do my own projects there, like THE BRAIN.
This was a very expensive system originally, but now it's very affordable. You can work with it for inder $2,000. I have the program on my laptop so I can go to NY and work with my partner. SACCO AND VANZETTI was the first project I cut on my laptop and altough it was a pain to get it up and running, I was very pleased with it and it did everything I needed.
-
Vixmom, I enjoyed your wonderful story about Jon Inman.
Elmore-GOOD OFFICE HUNTING VIBES!!!
Edi-I also find it exciting you are working on THE CLOSER & knowing new episodes will be forthcoming. :D
DtM, interesting concept from Amazon & TIVO. I wonder what that would do to NetFlix. Maybe nothing, unless you intend to watch the recording quickly it will only used up available recording space. I think I might still prefer a DVD sitting in my drawer until I’m ready to watch it.

As I look at the dailies, I marvel once again at the quality of acting, directing, the blocking and camera work. I have always admired the editing. The editors pull all sorts of details out of the footage---so many little "moments", and turn it around so fast. Very impressive!

Is this the documentary about the Billy Holliday song? I know some of the folks involved with it. It is a fascinating story, made by a very nice guy...
DR Edisaurus - Re: Strange Fruite:
This is a film from 2004. Here is the plot:
William Boyals, a successful, black, gay attorney in New York, is drawn back to the small, rural Louisiana town he long ago escaped from to investigate the lynching of a black gay childhood friend.
I saw it listed on Netflix and it sounded interesting. I may have to search out that other film, however, as it also sounds interesting.

One of my co-workers saw Harold & Maude: An Intimate Musical (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/106327.html) last night and brought me the program. Her review was mixed.
-
Re the Kritzer CDs - I'm about to have them mastered into one CD and then I'll print up a few and they'll be available on kritzerland.com very inexpensively. The Kritzer Time CD had a problem - it was all reverb - something had gone wrong when Grant made the original CD master. That's been completely remixed and now sounds normal.
edisaurus will, of course, get one for all her incredibly helpful work on the Brain video. And I'll send the credits now.
-
There is so much I want to see in the area.
DR MBarnum, it sounds like you meant to say "eat", from the tenor of these discussions! :)
DR Edisaurus, please let your cartographer friend [My Friend the Cartographer...hmm...a song? a documentary?] know that their map is great fun, and very well done.
And **HEALING VIBES** for your finger....your mouse finger.
-
A short description of the STRANGE FRUIT documentary:
In 1937, after seeing a photo depicting the lynching of a black man in the south, Bronx-born high school teacher Abel Meeropol wrote a poem entitled "Strange Fruit" that begins with the words: "Southern trees bear a strange fruit / Blood on the leaves and blood at the root." He set the poem to music and a few years later convinced Billy holiday to record it in a legendary heartbreaking performance. Intertwining jazz genealogy, biography, performance footage, and the history of lynching, director Joel Katz fashions a fascinating discovery of the lost story behind a true American classic.
There are some fascinating angles on the story that would be a real spoiler to mention. But definitely this is worth putting in the queue!

Hi Dr Edi ...... Hope your finger (or "finser" as it was called by our GM some time back in the notes) doesn't hurt too much. It's a bitch when you get a cut on some joint or area that has to flex and move.

DR Edi - if your mouse finger is unusable, you could try the technique used by my 88-year-old mother (who bought her first computer just 3 years ago). She uses her mouse upside down, pressing with the heel of her hand instead of her finger. Of course, this means that when you move the mouse left, the cursor goes right and vice versa!

DR Jane, I don't think it will effect Netflix at all, since the selection is no where near and it's a service limited to Tivo subscribers. However, the few advantages it does have over Netflix is that the films are always available and I can plan on viewing a movie just an hour or two (the time it takes to download) in advance. Once a movie is downlaoded to your unit, you have 30 days to view it. But once you start playing it, it's set to delete after 24 hours.
I'm gonna give it a shot. And since they gave me $15 in free rentals for signing up, there's no real risk.

Re: Last night's final "preliminary" American Idol round (and after three months, I should jolly well think it WOULD be the final preliminary!!!):
I have no problems with any of the ejected individuals leaving the show at this point. Sorry about the tears that were included, but....Sabrina was no more memorable to me than Antonella or Haley. I'd have understood, but would have been a bit disappointed, if Stephanie had been gone last night. They've either got to "bring it" or get off the stage.
I agree Sanjaya should also have been gone...two weeks ago, last week and last night. That said, he's not any less memorable...and possibly gave a better vocal performance Tuesday night, than either Jared or Sundance. Not sorry to see either of them go.

AOL's Top Picks for 2007 - PART ONE
20. 'Transformers'
Release Date: July 4
Why We're Excited: Michael Bay delivers a live-action flick based on an '80s cartoon about robotic aliens kicking each others' asses on Earth. Sounds preposterous, but it's jam-packed with cool effects, action and Bay's signature talent for blowing stuff up. Perhaps there's more to it than meets the eye.
19. 'Blades of Glory'
Release Date: March 30
Why We're Excited: Will Ferrell plus men's professional pairs ice skating equals ... well, we don't know. We're not math whizzes over here. But we DO know that just imagining Ferrell in a man-itard makes us snort our Pepsi (blatant product placement, anyone?).
18. 'Live Free or Die Hard'
Release Date: June 29
Why We're Excited: John McClane (Bruce Willis), the iconic badass who single-handedly took down two terrorist organizations on two separate Christmases, is back to battle something he hates more than Hans Gruber: Internet porn (and by "porn" we mean "terrorism"). Yippee-ki-yay, motherf!&#er!
17. 'Zodiac'
Release Date: March 2
Why We're Excited: After three films in '05, Jake Gyllenhaal made us miss him in '06; this may be his only '07 flick -- for that reason alone, we're stoked. And director David Fincher takes a stab at a serial-killer thriller for the first time since 'Seven.' We expect to be thrilled.
16. 'Beowulf'
Release Date: Nov. 16
Why We're Excited: True, the Old-English poem doesn't seem like blockbuster material. But this ain't your high-school version of 'Beowulf'; it's helmed by Robert Zemeckis, written by comic-book god Neil Gaiman and co-stars Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mom. Now that's epic.
15. 'The Nanny Diaries'
Release Date: April 20
Why We're Excited: Take one hugely popular novel, add in Scarlett Johansson as the nanny with the job from hell, and you've got 2007's guilty-pleasure chick flick: It's 'The Devil Wears Prada' with potty training instead of fashion shows. ('The Devil Wears Pull-Ups'?)
14. 'Be Kind Rewind'
Release Date: TBD
Why We're Excited: It's from Michel Gondry, the man who's taken us on fun-filled head trips with 'Eternal Sunshine' and 'Science of Sleep.' It's geared toward movie lovers (set in a video store). And it stars Jack Black and Mos Def. Need we say more?
13. 'Evan Almighty'
Release Date: June 22
Why We're Excited: Well, drop any other actor in this premise -- a man is tasked by God (Morgan Freeman) to make like Noah and build an ark -- and we'd be skeptical. But given it's Steve Carell, we're keeping the faith this sequel to 'Bruce Almighty' will be hee-larious.
12. 'American Gangster'
Release Date: Nov. 7
Why We're Excited: Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington lock horns as an NYPD detective and a Harlem drug kingpin in this '70s-set drama from Ridley Scott. With Russell as the tough cop and Denzel as the urban baddie, it's like 'L.A. Confidential' meets 'Training Day.' We can't wait for the fireworks.
11. 'Ratatouille'
Release Date: June 29
Why We're Excited: It doesn't take much to get us psyched about a Pixar film. But this one's directed by Brad Bird ('The Incredibles') and has a quirky storyline about a foodie rat, which means Pixar's about to knock our socks off ... again. Genius can be SO predictable.

The focus this season is on "family". The squad as a family, as well as meeting more family members: Brenda's father, Fritz's parents. etc.
That should be nice.
A bit ago MattH noted:
I flipped over to TNT-HD and saw that they were showing the pilot and second episode of THE CLOSER tonight. Reminded me that I haven't watched either episode in a fairly long time, but I had forgotten how much Brenda had to fight to get her squad's respect and even their attention.
I meant (not meat, I do learn) to observe that actually it is clear at the start of Episode 2 that Brenda has no respect for her squad - and complains to Pope. It is at the end of the Episode, when SGT Gabriel volunteers to drive her to another LA appointment so she doesn't get lost and humiliated, that the mutual building of respect begins - they grow to respect her as she grows to respect them.

Closer fans will be glad to know that Brenda still has that ugly long sweater that she's worn since the pilot and is still wearing in season 3. Another of the many things I love about this show!
-
I began my afternoon of viewing with MR. MOTO IN DANGER ISLAND. Pretty good mystery, and while I easily avoided the obvious red herring they kept throwing in our faces, I did not guess the identity of the murderer. I had it narrowed down to two, but I guessed incorrectly.

Headband, head up, headband, head up!

-
Will we never get to page eight?
I have a feeling that it will happen.
-
Then I watched the featurette on the MOTO DVD, this one of how MOTO came to Fox to be made into a movie series. Something I didn't know is that the first Moto novel wasn't filmed at all. The second and third novels were the first ones filmed.
-
BTW, the subway map wasn't made by my friend---she just happened to send it to me.
She did do artwork for the Atlas of Georgia, a very fine publication. It even has maps with locations of the greatest concentration of trailer parks, and towns with weird names, biblical names, etc.
-
Next, I watched LILLIAN RUSSELL, a very entertaining show biz biofilm with Alice Faye doing very well as the title character.
I had never seen this all the way through, so I was delighted seeing so many wonderful actors in character roles. They even managed to work in a Weber and Fields routine and Eddie Foy Jr. playing his father.
For much of the DVD, the transfer is stunning - very sharp with excellent contrast. However, about an hour and twenty minutes into it, a scratch over on the right side of the frame begins and runs for something like twenty minutes. What's terrible is that the scratch is deep enough to actually have little tears in the film and these small ragged openings run constantly during that 20 minutes, very distracting.
Fox puts a disclaimer at the top of the film about the presentation being the best possible with the materials at hand. What a shame to have it marred like this!
-
There's a featurette on the LILLIAN RUSSELL DVD on the real Lillian Russell which I started watching. It's very interesting getting the real story of her life which, of course, was considerably cleaned up for the screen.
-
So, tonight, I'll watch THE NAKED CITY from the Criterion Collection and then THE PRESTIGE on Blu-ray disc which I've read is a snimply stunning high def transfer. Can't wait to see for myself.
-
Yesterday, der Brucer posted -
Woody is in the process of cataloging all 157 Good Eats episodes noting guests and "devices"
Lordy, he's making me sound like such a geek!
While der B is busy watching everything on broadcast television in the livingroom, I retreat to his room and catch up on DVDs. It's that simple. Lately, I've been going through the Good Eats DVDs, watching the eps in broadcast order, and it's fascinating how much of the recurring bits and regulars showed up in the very first season.
His use of the phrase "Oh, bother" didn't start until the first ep of the second season, however. (I've only just started re-watching season two.)
My re-watching the series will be a bit spotty in some places. There's thirty-three eps that haven't yet made it to DVD (including DR Edisaurus's work on "Squid Pro Quo"), and twenty-seven eps that are on DVD that we don't have in our collection... yet.
As for "Lucky," he's a relatively new addition to the series. I'm not exactly sure when he joined the crew. I think he's a good addition to the action, however, cleverly warped. And yes, Edi, you can tell him I said so!

A button expander for after a big meal? Can you wear this where it can be seen, or must it be covered by a sweater or something?

Are we at page 8 yet?

Maybe one more.

Oh, what to do, what to do.
I didn't get online this morning because, right after my alarm clock went off for the first time- at five-thirty!!! - the phone rang. Elisa, the main accounting person at the store, needed help pronto, as the girl woman person cashier who was supposed to open this morning had called out. Could I, would I, get in to work as quickly as possible?
I could, I would. I grabbed a quick shower, asked der Brucer to drive me to the store, hopped into my clothes, asked der Brucer to drive me to the store, made sure I had everything I needed in my bag, went back and told der B to get up because I had to get to work (his reply? "You don't need to be there for another half hour." No, I need to get there now!) and within another five minutes we were out the door and heading down the road.
I was very appreciated by the rest of the staff for getting there as quickly as I had.
The day sped by, with very nice customers on their very best behavior.
And I returned home in the mid-afternoon.
Now, as for my quandry -
Do I want to keep going through yesterday's posts - I haven't even approached today's yet - or do I want to take a nap?
If I take a nap, I'm sure to get a nice cuddleing with a very nice puppy or two.
Actually, that's the more attractive option! I'll catch up later!
-
Yes - page 8!

There's thirty-three eps that haven't yet made it to DVD (including DR Edisaurus's work on "Squid Pro Quo")
I didn't edit that one---I did "Oat Cuisene", "Celebrity Roast" and the Halloween one about Jello (can't remember the name.) Since Alton didn't credit any of his crew back then, (maybe he still doesn't?) it's hard to know who worked on what.
Then I left the country to show THE INTERNATIONALE in England. Since I was filling in until my gardening show cranked back up, it was a graceful way to bail out of working on the rest of the season.
I'll pass your compliments on to Lucky. Greg is working on a new series with him coming up sometime soon.

Sadly, I will miss Gor's new CD release party in Hollywood by 2 weeks >:(

Netflix doesn't seem to have this, but it does have the "STRANGE FRUIT" that MBarnum mentioned. That sounds interesting, also, so I've added that to my queue.

GOOD NEWS! GOOD NEWS! and NO SPOILERS!
Disney Annual Shareholders Meeting reveals that
The Song of the South dvd might be out.... "soon"!
Quote from a report at jimhillmedia.com:
"The only other news that might interest all you hardcore Disneyana fans out there is that the company is now revisiting its decision not to release "Song of the South" on DVD. When quizzed by Carol Koster about the current status of this 1946 Walt Disney Productions release, Iger first expressed his concerns about the film. Wondering aloud if it would actually be possible for today's audiences to put this picture in the proper context.
But Bob (while making no promises about what might happen next with this historic motion picture) then went on to say that " ... we will look at ("Song of the South") again. And Dick Cook (I.E. The Chairman of Walt Disney Studios) would be in charge of that effort.""

* Disney's 2009 Animated Release 'The Frog Princess' Taps Into
Studio's Rich Fairy Tale Legacy *
NEW ORLEANS, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The Walt Disney Studios will
continue its fairy tale legacy in animation by taking moviegoers on an
all-new "once upon a time" musical adventure with its 2009 release
of "The Frog Princess," it was announced today by Dick Cook, chairman
of The Walt Disney Studios, and John Lasseter, chief creative officer
for Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. A musical set in the
legendary birthplace of jazz -- New Orleans -- "The Frog Princess"
will introduce the newest Disney princess, Maddy, a young African-
American girl living amid the charming elegance and grandeur of the
fabled French Quarter. From the heart of Louisiana's mystical bayous
and the banks of the mighty Mississippi comes an unforgettable tale
of love, enchantment and discovery with a soulful singing crocodile,
voodoo spells and Cajun charm at every turn.
"The Frog Princess" is based on an original story written by Disney's
acclaimed filmmaking duo John Musker & Ron Clements ("The Little
Mermaid," "Aladdin," "Hercules"), who will also direct. Oscar(R)-
winning songwriter/composer and New Orleans native Randy Newman ("Toy
Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc." and "Cars")
will write songs and the score for this project. Peter Del Vecho, a
12-year Disney animation veteran, will produce.
Commenting on the announcement from The Walt Disney Company's 2007
Annual Meeting of shareholders, Cook said, "We're pleased to be here
in the heart of New Orleans to announce 'The Frog Princess,' a great
story with all the ingredients that go into making an extraordinary
motion picture experience. Like many of Disney's most popular fairy
tales, it has elements of magic, fantasy, adventure, heart, humor,
and music. The film's New Orleans setting and strong princess
character give the film lots of excitement and texture. We're also
thrilled to have John Musker, Ron Clements and Randy Newman lending
their talents and creative energies to this project. John and Ron
helped to usher in Disney's second golden age of animation nearly two
decades ago with 'The Little Mermaid,' and are on track to create the
Studio's next great fairy tale adventure."
John Lasseter added, "Aside from being longtime friends and
colleagues, John and Ron are two of the most influential and
imaginative filmmakers in the animation medium, and I am so excited
to be working with them in bringing their creative vision for 'The
Frog Princess' to the big screen. They've come up with an original
story that is deeply rooted in the fairy tale tradition, and it's
filled with great humor, emotion, and musical moments. Randy Newman
brings fun and excitement to every project, and I couldn't think of a
better choice to deliver some wonderful New Orleans style music."
John Musker & Ron Clements have directed and produced five feature
films for Disney including "The Little Mermaid" and "Aladdin."
Additionally they received story and/or screenplay credits as well.
Musker began his career at Disney in 1977, after studying character
animation at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). He started
as an assistant animator and went on to animate on "The Fox and the
Hound." Clements started at Disney in the Talent Development Program,
and went on to serve a two-year apprenticeship under Disney animation
legend, Frank Thomas. He moved from in-betweener to assistant to
animator/storyman with credits on such films as "Winnie the Pooh and
Tigger Too," "The Rescuers," "Pete's Dragon," "The Fox and the
Hound," and "The Black Cauldron."
Randy Newman is a 17-time Oscar(R) nominee and winner (in 2002) for
his song, "If I Didn't Have You," from the Disney/Pixar
film, "Monsters, Inc." Among his many achievements, he has
contributed songs and musical scores for such other Pixar animated
features as "Toy Story," "A Bug's Life," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters,
Inc." and "Cars." Newman's impressive list of film credits also
includes scores for "Ragtime," "The Natural," "Parenthood,"
"Awakenings," and "Pleasantville." He was inducted into the
Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002, and his other career milestones
include three Grammy Awards, an Emmy, the first Henry Mancini Award
for Lifetime Achievement, and an Annie Award.

That was my second Disney info! You beat me to it!
Tomovoz should ne happy for Randy Oldman, err... Newman! :D
-
From
jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jim_hil...er-meeting.aspx
again!
"Of course, there was another reason that Mouse House officials wanted to hold this year's annual meeting down in New Orleans. And that was to officially announce that "The Frog Princess" (I.E. WDFA's official return to traditional animation) would be set in New Orleans of the 1920s. And to celebrate this special occasion, John Lasseter introduced Academy Award-winner Randy Newman and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Who then played "Down in New Orleans" (I.E. One of the many songs that Newman has written for "The Frog Princess") as slides of preproduction art for this new John Musker & Ron Clements movie played on a screen directly above the band.
Given that this was the first public performance of a number from this still-in-preproduction motion picture, "Down in New Orleans" was greeted with very enthusiastic applause. The smallish crowd in the auditorium also roared its approval when John Lasseter revealed that Maddy (I.E. The title character in "The Frog Princess") would be the first-ever African-American Disney Princess."
-
Indeed I am DR François. Thank you for the information and thanks also to the other major Randy Newman fan - DR Edisauras.

I am an avid Randy Newman fan, too, so I'm very happy about that!

I planned to go to the post house to finish the Brain but their landshare drive died. I'm sure glad I have all the media on my own system as well!

No, the BLT-A didn't smell good.
I wonder if Miss Patti has been a good research assistant today? I wonder if she's been out with her camera.

I've packaged up a few packages, but I think I'll ship them first thing in the morning.

Will we never get to page nine?
So it is written; so it shall be done!

I had hoped to keep working in town in case DR Jose is up for a dinner date. Maybe I'll go to the new house and do some yard work. It's so lovely out!

Ah, the research assistant has disappeared suddenly, which means she's been lazy and is now running out to do her work.

thank you for understanding!!

I think I should have scheduled a longer vacation! There is so much I want to see in the area.
Longer vacation? What about your job? You never work there.

DR Elmore - you don't happen to have the Netflix copy of Goodbye, Mr. Chips that we seem to have misplaced at our house, ;) ?

Just thought I'd stop by before I start getting ready for the long evening -- I am heading down to the Taper to catch "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" with my aunt (a belated birthday present), followed by immediately heading into work. I just gave myself a little nap and hope with that, and maybe a caffeinated beverage or two after the show, I'll be good to go.
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon! Good Evening!
-I'm covering all my bases since I'm not really sure exactly what time of day it is... Whew!
;)
-
In other news...
I've just finished with Day Two of SETC Auditions. So far, so good. There have been a few clunkers, but at least they were "fun" clunkers - i.e. people that made me laugh (on the inside), rather than people that I ended up feeling sorry for - if that makes sense.
I'd have say that THE most memorable audition so far was one young woman's rendition of "Adelaide's Lament" from Guys and Dolls. She somehow had the ability to change keys with each note she sang, and sometimes she even changed keys while holding a note. Now that's talent! ;D
-
-Of course, if you haven't guessed by now, I had a long day yesterday, Thursday. The main part of my day ran from 10:00am to 6:15pm. We had a lot of people registered, and the all, for the most part, all showed up this year. Normally, they allow for a "no-show ratio" of about 3-6 people per group of 25 auditionees. Yesterday, we only had 12 no-shows for the whole day - which was/is quite astonishing considering that the no-show ratio has been pretty consistent for the past 15 years that I've been playing these auditions. Thankfully, even though we had a long day, there were some very good performers/auditions. Lots of people to hire. And that always makes the day go faster, and all worth it.
-
*And, yes, I composed these posts off-line during my (short) lunch break... I type fast, but not that fast.
;)
-
There's a featurette on the LILLIAN RUSSELL DVD on the real Lillian Russell which I started watching. It's very interesting getting the real story of her life which, of course, was considerably cleaned up for the screen.
Not only was it considerably cleaned up, but Lillian Russell was a light soprano who was almost hired by Gilbert & Sullivan. I love Alice Faye, but light soprano she ain't! It would be like asking Lotte Lenya to play Renee Fleming.
-
Day Two Report Addendum:
*And there was one young man in the last group of today who sang one of the most beautiful auditions I've ever had the pleasure of playing for. Beautiful tone, perfect phrasing, just "floating" (not pushing the top of his range), and he actually knew the meaning of the words he was singing. It was a great way to wrap up the day. *And I made sure to find him afterwards and tell that I enjoyed his audition - he was really that good. :)

RE: "American Idol"
i won't get to watch the women's performances and the results show until I get back to NYC, but I did hear the results of last night's elimintations. In one word....
UGH!
-
DR edisaurus - Sorry I didn't get to you join you and George last night with the puppeteers. Since the main part of the day ran long, my evening session did not get started until 8:30. And by the time I was done with those callbacks, I literally went back to my room, made a few phone calls and went to bed. I'll give you a call tonight or tomorrow morning to give you the schedule for tomorrow - at least to tell you when the lunch break is so that you know how 'late' you can show up to observe.
-
And that's about it for now. I'm currently on my dinner break, and it's actually quite a nice break tonight. So, I'm taking some time to catch up on the posts, and, if I don't catch up now, I'll do my best to catch up later - which may not be until I get back to NYC Sunday night. -Just in time for "Grease:YTOTIW" ;)
Laters....
-
LOL Tomovoz, we two Randy Newman fans, plus bk, Cillaz and I hope, many others!
I've always enjoyed the songs that he's written for movies (at least, the ones that I've seen), but I've never really searched for or listened to songs that he's performed as a singer/songwriter...other than "Short People."

Anyway, I went to the Edwards gathering and it was really crowded, no more chairs and I was there early. My cold was starting to bother me again, so I just decided heck with it, it's early, he'll be back. I'll catch him next time.

DR Jane - Continues Healing Vibes to Sherlock.
-
DR edisaurus (again) - Well, a dinner date probably would not have been possible tonight with the tightness of my schedule. So... I have to check what time my flight back out is on Sunday, but brunch would be very nice.
-
DR MusicGuy - As mentioned previously, I return to NYC on Sunday. *And Ms. Kitt comes in to rehearsals on Tuesday. :)

I believe Mercury is still in Uranus because:
How else do you explain traffic backed up three and four blocks on every major street in the City of Studio at three-thirty in the afternoon?
How else do you explain three local donut shops all being completely sold out of - wait for it - donuts? I queried one of them and I was told that people came in the morning, many people, ordering five and six dozen donuts at a pop. And these are not popular shops. Even Von's was completely out of donuts.

The lady in the center is the unique vocal talent Miss Caterina Valente!
Cool! Thanks! And here's the actual picture:

-
Thanks George,
I am glad that someone here is willing to tryout some Armenian pop music...(and watch a really cute Armenian singer).
-
Cool! Thanks! And here's the actual picture:

Thanks for posting the pic; I only know how to link "stuff"!
(They all look great; 75, Caterina, 75! She reminds me of Carol Burnett here!) :D

May Mercury stay out of Uranus vibes for us all!
I too have listened to the Armenian George Clooney; even though I don't get any of the lyrics, I do like the sweetness of the delivery and the velvet of the voice!
-
Whew! Done reading/skimming/skipping through yesterday's posts...
-
DR edisaurus - The dessert I had at Rathbun's was their "Gooey Toffee Cake" - which, I'm guessing is their version of the "traditional" Sticky Toffee Pudding. It was quite dee-lish! And it was served with a scoop of Jack Daniels Ice Cream (vanilla ice cream flavored with a good shot of Jack Daniels). -And the ice cream playing off the hot cake and the caramel sauce.... Oooohh.... *I could make a brunch just out of that! ;)
-
HOO and RAY!
And I even started Page 11!!!!!
Hmm.... OK, in honor of SETCs... Everyone do Combination 3 - Ballet/Jazz with 2 counts of 8 to show off any of your specialties.
*And by specialties, I mean tumbling, acro(batics), turns, etc. -Not specialties as in "tellies". -Which some young women do sometimes try to show off - on purpose or not. ;D
-
And now, as if he had not done enough work today already, DR JoseSPiano will lead us all in a rousing chorus of The Donut Lament.
-
And the guy just swept around me while I've been sitting here, so I guess I can squat here for a bit longer. -Of course, I'm not really squatting right now, but with this crowd, sometimes a clarification is needed. ;)
-
And now, as if he had not done enough work today already, DR JoseSPiano will lead us all in a rousing chorus of The Donut Lament.
a.k.a. - "Where's My Hole"
;D
-
In A flat.
-
You have my permission to groan. ;)
-
OK... I still have about an hour left before I start back up again, so...
More reading....
Laters...
-
a.k.a. - "Where's My Hole"
;D
Paging TCB!!!!!!
-
DR Jane - Good news about Keith's mother.
-
Paging TCB!!!!!!
Or you. *I thought that might have been a title of something that's been in your VCR.
-
... how you like the Amazon service.
An escort service for subservient heterosexual males?
der Brucer
-
I'm with bk - where did this week go?
-
...the Atlas of Georgia, a very fine publication.
A body-builder magazine? Send MBarnum a copy.
der Brucer
-
I wonder if there are any Armenian bodybuilders in Artesia?
-
Good Evening!
Whew all caught up on the posts since Wednesday... I think, so....
-
I am an avid Randy Newman fan, too, so I'm very happy about that!
Don't I count! I even like his Faust!
der Brucer
-
DR MBarnum- As others have stated, DO NOT stay in Little Tokyo. And I'd say the best time to check it out would be during the lunch hours. Otherwise, everyone was/is working and just not out on the streets. -At least that's what I remember from my last trip to LA.
And if you want a true L.A. Culinary experience, you must try Phillipe for their French Dip sandwich! -It's on the edge of Chinatown. -So, if you plan to hit check out the train station, you'd just be a short walk from there. -And you'd also be close to Olivera (?) Street if you want to indulge in some Mexican food.
-
As for "Caroline In the City" - I liked Malcolm Gets and Eric Lutes too, but I really liked Andy Lauer. Good calves from all the rollerblades. ;)
-
And there are many other things I would and should comment on, but I need to get back to the "room" and start playing callbacks in a few. And I think I'm going to head back to my hotel room to partake of some Dark Chocolate Tam-Tams (Thank You! DR edisaurus!)... So...
Laters....
*Which will probably be tomorrow night's dinner break since I'm playing until 11:00 tonight, and the it will be right to bed to rest up for the third and final day of auditions.
-
I'd have say that THE most memorable audition so far was one young woman's rendition of "Adelaide's Lament" from Guys and Dolls. She somehow had the ability to change keys with each note she sang, and sometimes she even changed keys while holding a note. Now that's talent! ;D
Mrs. Miller's granddaughter, perchance?
der Brucer
-
-So, if you plan to hit check out the train station, you'd just be a short walk from there. -And you'd also be close to Olivera (?) Street if you want to indulge in some Mexican food.
Olvera Street.
-
I really liked Andy Lauer. Good calves from all the rollerblades.
I didn't know he had starred in Starlight Express.
-
As for "Caroline In the City" - I liked Malcolm Gets and Eric Lutes too, but I really liked Andy Lauer. Good calves from all the rollerblades. ;)
Andy was/is pretty darned cute! He was also in a version of "War of the Worlds (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0449040/)" with C. Thomas Howell that was released direct to video...it was made around the same time as Tom Cruise's version. ::)
-
MBarnum-.Gor Mkhitarian does look a bit like George Clooney, front view with his eyes down. It is his mouth that does it.
-
I don't know exactly what the time difference is between here and Australia, but I'm convinced that DR Tomovoz never sleeps! Ever! :)
-
It would be like asking Lotte Lenya to play Renee Fleming.
No, rumor has it that part will be offered to Antonela Barba, of American Idol infamy.
She alone has the courage to wear that dress!
der Brucer
-
I've always enjoyed the songs that he's written for movies (at least, the ones that I've seen), but I've never really searched for or listened to songs that he's performed as a singer/songwriter...other than "Short People."
Waht? Mr George (I have ever musical show album -ever) doesn't have Randy Newman's Faust?
With the vocal talents of Linda Ronstadt, Don Henley, James Taylor, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, and Randy Newman .
der Brucer
-
Does anyone remember the short-lived, ill-fated musical Marlowe from 1981?
Here is the opening paragraph of Frank Rich's review in The New York Times:
When everything goes right in a musical, the audience feels a rush of exhilaration that is the quintessence of Broadway. And what happens when everything goes wrong? Well, when everything goes wrong, another kind of giddiness sets in - that same slaphappy feeling that comes when Laurel and Hardy send a grand piano crashing down a flight of stairs. [The review goes on from there, and needless to say, the show didn't last long.]
To me, this Board is that piano. It is ever so much fun give it the slightest of nudges, and the DRs take it straight for those stairs! Wheeeeeeeeeee!
-
Edi-I appreciate the interesting Closer updates, without giving anything away. :)
-
Good calves from all the rollerblades. ;)
Good calves come from great heifers!

Dawn Upshaw: The dawn of a renewed voice
Friday, February 02, 2007
DAVID STABLER
The Oregonian
When Dawn Upshaw walks onstage Thursday to perform at the Newmark Theatre, the acclaimed soprano won't just inaugurate a new vocal series in Portland. Her concert also marks Upshaw's return to the stage for the first time since being diagnosed last August with breast cancer.
Upshaw's silvery voice and easygoing grace have won audiences all over the world -- plus three Grammys -- and earned her the label "the diva next door." Thursday's concert will be her third appearance in Oregon. She sang in Eugene in 1992 and at Kaul Auditorium in 1999, both vocal high points.
This time, Upshaw, 46, opens the new Vocal Arts Series presented by Friends of Chamber Music. Two other concerts follow in the series this season: soprano Julianne Baird and the Aulos Ensemble on March 19; and Chanticleer, the male a cappella choir, on April 13-14.
Last summer's news didn't shock her, Upshaw said from her home in Westchester, N.Y. Eight years ago her sister was also stricken with breast cancer. Her sister is fine, now, but Upshaw knew she herself was at risk.
"I figured, someday, I'd get a call," she says.
Surgery removed two tumors, followed by two months of chemotherapy, which wasn't as bad as she feared, she says. "Nothing unbearable, nothing even close to being unbearable. But it wasn't fun."
Because doctors caught the cancer early, Upshaw's prognosis is very good, she says. Still, she's only just begun to process what happened.
"It's life-changing, but I don't have perspective on that yet. It's one of those things that has a huge impact on your life, like becoming a parent, and music." One thing she knows for sure is that throughout her recovery, family and friends, including Dana Upshaw, her sister who lives in Portland, never left her side. "I feel I am blessed through this strange journey."
Upshaw remembers feeling unfocused while going through chemo. "It was hard to read a book. I didn't even attempt to worry about how things would affect my work."
But with a winter tour looming, she had to start thinking about what music she wanted to sing. "I had to program this recital long before I knew how I was going to feel that day. I didn't particularly feel like singing. What do I want to sing about? What do I think I can sing?"
Her choices, informed through growing up with folk music and pioneering new music by John Harbison, John Adams and Oswaldo Golijov, mix down-home and ethereal art song.
She'll open with three Stephen Foster songs that she calls soothing and calming. "They call me into the evening of music-making," she says.
Robert Schumann's "Mignon" is full of yearning, and Hugo Wolf's "Bekehrte" relates the awe and sensuality of a first experience with love.
Four songs from "The Nursery" by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky call on Upshaw to become childlike in character, while one of her favorite composers, the Argentinean Golijov, contributes an entirely different feeling. "Lua descolorida" is about a woman speaking to the moon. "She's desperate, asking for comfort from the light of the moon because she feels so lost, but she can't even bear that light. She wants to disappear."
Upshaw ends on a light note with three wonderful "Cabaret Songs" by William Bolcom, including the delightful "Black Max" and the whip-smart "Amor."
Upshaw's voice is changing, she says, just one more element in life that doesn't stay put. "I feel even more comfortable with my lower range than in the beginning of my career. It feels fuller."
"I like variety," she adds. "You connect with different texts, even different music, as the years pass."

I like Mrs. Miller. She is a kick.
-
Edi-I appreciate the interesting Closer updates, without giving anything away.
DR Edisaurus, I am just curious - and I do not watch The Closer, so I have no vested interest, but - when you are awarded this kind of work, do you have to sign some sort of confidentiality agreement with either the production company or the network?
Although if you are involved, I may need to start watching!
-
Adriana-yuck and ouch. GOOD TOE VIBES!
Elmore-continued vibes all works out with your office space.
-
Matt H-Thank you. I thought you knew about all the shows. I’m surprised you weren’t watching Eureka. I looked it up & it returns in July.
-
Jose-Thank you and I’m glad you are enjoying the auditions.
Keith’s mother is home and sounds happy to be feeling uncomfortable, compared to the pre-surgery pain.
-
Although if you are involved, I may need to start watching!
Well, Edisaurus or no Edisaurus, The Closer is damn good TV!
And, since it's on TNT, if you miss the first airing, they always have a second one a few hours later.
der Brucer
-
I don't know exactly what the time difference is between here and Australia, but I'm convinced that DR Tomovoz never sleeps! Ever! :)
Axiomatic statement.
(If I'm not on the Board I am lurking)
Some DRs have met me so can attest to the signs of sleeplessness embossed on the face.

Farley Granger's autobio arrived from Amazon.com today. It's worth buyng if only for the section on the 2nd rate musical (and guilty pleasure) First Impressions.

Well, Edisaurus or no Edisaurus, The Closer is damn good TV!

Well...no, actually, I don't. ::) It's just one of those CDs that I didn't get when I first saw it. I think it went out of print for a while, but it's available again. I know that the song, "Life Has Been Good To Me" was used in the 3-D episode of "Third Rock From the Sun." I really liked that. :)
-
I had intended to start watching a motion picture on DVD, but the phone has not stopped ringing and then I had to write down some notes that came to me whilst in the shower (for the book).
-
Der B---the puppeteer friend who is on GOOD EATS from time to time is Matt "Lucky" Yates.
I think he played Igor on last evening's "Fruit 10 From Outer Space" - skinny, creepy, Goth-guy. (Fun!)

-
Actually, though, everything I plant will probably wither up and die. I am a terrible gardener.
DR Laura, this makes me laugh, not at you, but because it reminds me of me. When I first moved back to Iowa from Arizona, I was bound and determined to have a huge garden in the wonderful black Iowa dirt. I picked out plants and planted some things from seed. I started watering in the beginning and then, as always I lost steam. The weeds took over and I gave up.
I am again thinking of planting a vegetable garden this year...lol.
-
Or you. *I thought that might have been a title of something that's been in your VCR.
I heard it was a remark that you've never made before!
-
Last night Amy/Edi asked
Your voice is wonderful, DR Ben, and I always enjoy hearing your reviews. Maybe we could start a radio theater company?
-
Maybe early in the morning I can attack the yard with a pick.
Better the yard than the neighbor!
der Brucer
Reader Laura swung a pick,
Into the head of the drunken hick,
When Sandra saw what Mom had done
She raised her Cherry Coke and cheered: "Mom has won!"
-
Your voice is wonderful, DR Ben, and I always enjoy hearing your reviews. Maybe we could start a radio theater company?
I'd love to do this, too! ;D
-
It's time for me to go to the theater! I'm actually paying for a ticket instead of ushering, but I'm not sure what it is that I'm going to see. ::) Some friends of mine have a small theater company, so I must support them. :) I'll be back later!

A Candide opinion: we must let our garden grow!

We recently discovered a funny show on BBC, WHO’S LINE IS IT ANYWAY? I’m not sure but it seems TIVO records several half hour episodes a day. The advantages of watching a show long past its original airdate, you get to watch an episode or two a night.
There was an American version with Drew Carey which I don’t remember, nor have I seen it. Has anyone seen either version?
-
Maybe we could start a radio theater company?
Well, they don't make Mercurys anymore, so you'll have to be "The Lincoln Radio Theatre"!

As you have asked, so is it done!

DR Edisaurus, I am just curious - and I do not watch The Closer, so I have no vested interest, but - when you are awarded this kind of work, do you have to sign some sort of confidentiality agreement with either the production company or the network?
No, but even without one, I would never post anything that would do anything more than hint at what was to come, which I think makes people more inclined to tune in. I also make a point not to give away any plot points in the promos. I don't want to upset Matt! :)
-
There was an American version with Drew Carey which I don’t remember, nor have I seen it. Has anyone seen either version?
Yes. Woody and I regulary enjoy the American version.
It's stull running!
It's on tonight at 9:00 PM on the FAM channel!
Wayne Brody and Colin Mochrie are my favorites - and the musical numbers are the best!

And, since it's on TNT, if you miss the first airing, they always have a second one a few hours later.
Not to mention all the marathons! They are rerunning season I right now, I believe.
Season 3, we get to see Fritz in a towel. That's reason enough to tune in! :D
-
I also make a point not to give away any plot points in the promos.
"The Closer" - SPOILER ALERT!
He's a She!
der Brucer

... we get to see Fritz in a towel...

-
Singdaw-I suggest you rent Season 1 & 2 and watch the series from the beginning.
Ditto. Each show stands on its own, but to really appreciate the long story arc, it's best to watch from the beginning. Don't get turned off by episode I; they refined, retooled and changed a few cast members and episode 2 was much better---visually as well, and it was uphill from there. I'm really glad I stayed with it, instead of launching the new show HEARTLAND. I don't watch much TV, but I have become very fond of P.M.S. (Priority Murder Squad!).
HEARTLAND stars Treat Williams as a doctor who specializes in heart transplants. My TNT producers just did a shoot with him and said he was a dream to work with.
-
"The Closer" - SPOILER ALERT!
He's a She!
OK...well maybe that one, but I don't think most people picked up on that little detail.
-
Shouldn't that be "cheap, cheaper, cheapest"?
der Brucer
("cheap, cheap, cheap", sounds like an egg hatched in your VCR)
Oh, I am sure there is a great deal of chicken in that tape.
-
...but to really appreciate the long story arc...
I agree. And therein, that the story arc is not one of plot but one of changing character dynamics, lies the show's greatest appeal.
der Brucer
I really am getting twisted - Woody brought me l lovely bowl of egg-drop soup and I went and fetched the Tabasco bottle to give it a few jolts - I now have "Hot & Sour Egg Drop Soup".
I expect Pulliam would approve.
-
I'll give you a call tonight or tomorrow morning to give you the schedule for tomorrow - at least to tell you when the lunch break is so that you know how 'late' you can show up to observe.
I'm looking forward to it! (If you have any way to read this...)
I have to say that it bugs me that you pay for a hotel room and they charge you for internet access to boot. That should be an amenity!
Some hotels have a setup where you can log on in the lobby, but pay if you want "room service". That seems fair.
-
I expect Pulliam would approve.
Are you saying Ron is hot and sour?
I'm glad to know you are also a Randy Newman fan, Der B, but after looking at a sample of your record collection, how could you *not* be? (Van Dyke Parks produced Randy's first album, BTW...)
-
Yes. Woody and I regulary enjoy the American version.
It's stull running!
It's on tonight at 9:00 PM on the FAM channel!
Wayne Brody and Colin Mochrie are my favorites - and the musical numbers are the best!

I show two episodes on tonight from different years. Interesting, one at 7:00 & the other at 7:30, I have set both to record.
-
So did I my you tube posting make any new Gor Mkhitarian fans? Even one?
I had thought that if I posted that he resembled George Clooney, at least a few of you might be sort of curious to look at his music video....but then again maybe not.
Maybe my musical likes are just too unusual for the American masses.
He needs to work on his diction. I couldn't understand a single word he sang!
-
How do you pronounce his last name? It looks like a sneeze!
-
Lots happening here today....and lots of injuries.
Well it is impossible for Mercury to be in Uranus for oh so many reasons...and the Mercury retrograde has come to an end.
HOWEVER because Mercury has turned direct - it is still traveling much slower than usual because of the gravitational pull of the earth and various transient orbits of Venus and the moon.
What does that mean in plain English?
Heavy traffic and NO donuts.
-
A former DR is appearing in a film on TCM this evening in a couple of hours. The film is MAN IN A NET.
Speaking of which, thanks for the Castle Photo, DR FRANCOIS!! O Dio Mio!!

Well, I'm back for moment to announce that as of now, I have officially joined the 21st century internet. I just installed DSL, and I am very pleased that the installation was so effortless. Hopefully, I can begin enjoying some internet goodies that were a pain to access using dial-up.
Anyway, hooray for me! ;D
Congratulations, Matt!

May Mercury stay out of Uranus vibes for us all!

I'm jealous. DSL for our neighborhood has been delayed until at least April.

Following up on a subject from earlier today, the following is from the imdb regarding Larry Blyden and Rip Torn:
Rip Torn was a close friend from boyhood of actor Larry Blyden. As boys, friends would refer to the two as "Torn and Bleedin'," Bleiden being the original spelling of the latter's name.
-
Larry Blyden was the original host of THE MOVIE GAME on tv.
Shelley Winters was one of the panel and she suddenly blurted out to Blyden:
"Oh you're that guy who is married to that girl from 'The Pajama Game'!"
Larry took only a beat and replied: "Was married to her."

DR MBARNUM,
...The place for Armenian food is Glendale...The place I frequent is Carousel, 304 N. Brand (Brand is the main drag of Glendale, a fun strolling street)....
Never ate there, but passed by often while I was working in Glendale. It's in easy strolling distance from Bookfellas, the bookstore where our esteemed BK gives many of his readings. Also very close to the Alex Theater.
-
One of my co-workers saw Harold & Maude: An Intimate Musical (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/106327.html) last night and brought me the program. Her review was mixed.
"Loved her, but he just hung around."
Just a hunch.
-
Nobody there but those chickens!
I saw a seagull today flying over the mall. We're nowhere near the ocean, so that was surprising to me.
-
Singdaw-I suggest you rent Season 1 & 2 and watch the series from the beginning.
Definitely, the journey to where she is now is well worth the time investment. Plus, the stories are very clever mysteries, and she's surrounded by some superbly interesting characters.
However, Season 2 doesn't come out on DVD until late May.

Various, sundried, and miscellaneous vibes for various, sundried, and miscellaneous purposes, including, but not limited to, the healing of injured fingers, toes, and other extremeties, and ailing puppies, mothers-in-law, etc.

What's the story on Harold and Maude? Was it on Broadway, or trying to get there? Is it any good? H&M is one of my Desert Island DVD's.
-
What's annoying is the quiz part. Having already heard stories of "Dr." Henderson, I must say he's on my list of big idiot teachers.
Maybe the quiz consists of questions he's had, and he's polling the students for the answers.

Both versions are hilarious DR Jane! The American version has much of the same cast.

Fritz in a towel? Color me salivating!
-
I shouldn't tease, no one has ever sent me glockenspiels before, that was really very sweet
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Pitched mallet percussion in all permutations to you, Cillaliz![/move]

Dear Reader Adriana, I sympathize with you on the big idiot teacher. I am familiar with the big idiot teacher.

Fritz in a towel? Color me salivating!
Even my lesbian friends think he's hot. That's saying a lot!

So somebody post of photo of this Fritz guy already, so we can see what he looks like!
-
Oh dear! I see it was a 2-Oops report day.
-
Has anyone heard from Danise lately?
-
As I cannot seem to locate the DVD of the Bollywood movie that I intended to watch tonight, I think I will watch STRANGE FRUIT.
-
Because I was expecting company, I put in disc 4 in the LAW & ORDER: CI boxed set of season 2, and I watched two episodes. The second was the more interesting and fun of the two. Joel Grey and Cady Huffman played husband a wife (quite a strange combination, I thought, but that was the point.) Released from prison, friends of Grey's start to get murdered in his presence thus making him fearful for his life. GOod episode, very clever.

Oh dear! I see it was a 2-Oops report day.
And the music of Johnny Mercer aided in cleaning up the aftermath of one of them. There were also leopard spots involved.
The less said about the other Oops! Report the better.
-
After my company left, I watched the first half of REAR WINDOW. I didn't want to start something I hadn't seen before already on DVD, and since I hadn't watched this in awhile, it was nice to revisit.
I have the first DVD issue of it, not the slightly remastered version. When I first saw it, I thought it was beautiful. Watching it tonight, it looks nice but I can definitely see that there are some problems.

The topic o' the day:
Right now, Artaxerxes (remember my iPod?) is playing the music of Count Basie.
In my handy-and-frequently-dandy clock-radio-CD-playerizer is the library's copy of The Gothic Archies singing the songs written for the audio versions of the books in A Series of Unfortunate Events.
-
Tomorrow morning, I'll watch THE NAKED CITY and then pick something from the to-watch shelf. It will probably be IT SHOULD HAPPEN TO YOU.

The musical HAROLD AND MAUDE played at the Paper Mill Playhouse a few years ago. Following is a really good review form the critic over at Talkin' Broadway.
http://www.talkinbroadway.com/regional/nj/nj78.html
Unfortunately, the Paper Mill Playhouse also invited the New York Times second-string critic to a fairly early performance of the show, and he did not give it a good review, basically hurting interest in the show for New York.

Today, I told a misbehaving five-year-old that if he didn't behave, I would sit on him. He behaved.
-
Dominick said the A-word today, and I have it on pretty good authority that he said the S-word yesterday. I told him that if he said either of those words again, he would be in VERY BIG TROUBLE. I just don't know what said VERY BIG TROUBLE should be. Obviously, I'm not going to hit him or anything like that, but I think this deserves something a little more drastic than the usual Time Out.
Any suggestions?
-
Well, the last time someone told me that I would be in a %&)$load of trouble .....
-
I didn't edit that one---I did "Oat Cuisene", "Celebrity Roast" and the Halloween one about Jello (can't remember the name.)
"Deep Space Slime."
Since Alton didn't credit any of his crew back then, (maybe he still doesn't?) it's hard to know who worked on what.
Still doesn't. Tacky of him.
-
DR MattH is a teacher. Maybe he can suggest some VERY BIG TROUBLE.

How about no TV for a week? Oh, wait! That would be punishment for me! Forget about it! ;D
-
And I'm heading to bed now.
Good night!
-
MattH beat me to the punch. Now the punch is all gone and I'll have to be content with a Snapple.
A case of Snapple weighs a little over nineteen pounds.
No, seriously.
We're having a sale on Snapple this week, and some of our older shoppers are having trouble lifting the cases out of their carts. I try to tell them to leave the cases in their carts, since I have a hand scanner I can use on the bar code (so conveniently located on the bottom of the case, of course), but some of these elderly shoppers are also hard of hearing. :-\
Anyway, I put one of the cases on my scale (normally used for weighing fruits and veggies), and sure enough, they weigh more than nineteen pounds.
This is not a convenience product for the less physically able of our society. :P

Lap dancing? At such a tender age?
:o

...I'd have say that THE most memorable audition so far was one young woman's rendition of "Adelaide's Lament" from Guys and Dolls. She somehow had the ability to change keys with each note she sang, and sometimes she even changed keys while holding a note. Now that's talent! ;D
Send that girl to the next round of AI.
No, wait, she might actually win.

So I am at home. I must feed the cats and find some cold medicine.
Not too cold, I trust. I understand they work better at room temperature.
-
So...
Who wants pudding?

Back from a lovelier than lovely visit with dear reader Rodzinski. I took my research assistant, Miss Patti, along for the ride. We went to Marie Callender's.

I love this show!! I enjoy the American version more because I discovered it first and because the British have a slightly different sense of "humour." ;) I taped maybe 15 or so 6-hour tapes of this!
