Well, you've read the notes, so by gum and by golly it's time to post, so let's do so, shall we?

Maaaaaark! HI! Ok, now it's time to read the notes. Sorry, bk! :)

Ok, read the notes. My most prized theatre possessions are my out-of-print Annie: A Theatre Memoir book, my Madame Alexander Annie doll (I actually did a five minute French show and tell presentation on it), my signed poster from TMM, the note Gavin Creel sent me, pictures with Sutton and Gavin, and my autographed Andrea McArdle cd. I suppose I can explain my reasons later. :)

Weird. I can't get the new notes through Netscape. Got them through my Favorites on AOL, but this print is so TINY, I'll go blind.

I don't really have much in the way of theatrical memorabilia.  Oh sure, I have some programs from over the years (not as many as I should have kept, but I'm trying to get better about that), but that's about it.  I'm just not a collecting type.

I shall search the archives. I think most of today's posts will be of the pictures variety.

Well, Jed, it's time for you to join the rest of us and BECOME a collector type.  That way, you can spend all your money on eBay like many others here and you will become obsessive and crazed and be all the better for it.

I think I'm going to bed. Although I already had my sleep for the night by accidentally falling asleep at around 8. Now I'm wide awake. Maybe I should just have breakfast and get an early start on the day. This afternoon I'll visit a musician friend who's nominated for a Grammy. He's very British and I'm sure I'll get some fine tea and biscuits. I've been trying to lobby for him and may have managed to get him a couple of votes. Everything is politics.

Ooh speaking of ebay, I won/bought a script from the 1995 workshop of Millie. Very different from the show we're familiar with now. I also bid on another Millie script (the rehearsal one), but on the night the auction ended, I went out to dinner with friends. I called to give my brother a limit, and being a sweet little brother, he didn't want to exceed my limit. The person beat me by a dollar, and I was NOT happy.

I think I shall be headed for bed, as well.  If I don't get a call for work in the morning, I think I may go get some pancakes.  Pity I can't get DuPar's up here!  Heck, can't even get IHOP in this town.  But, I know a couple places that are supposed to be swell for breakfast, so I do have options.

What a lot of lovely posts last night!  ;D

I am sorry we bored DRRon in chat, but for a bit we were trying something out.  It just took us a couple of minutes and then we were on to other things.....but then he was gone.  :(

I don't have time to scan this early - later today no doubt.  Hmmmmmm......my Playbills from WILDCAT and COMING ON STRONG....the latter autographed by Miss Carroll Baker and Mr Van Johnson.  My souvenir book from GYPSY with Miss Giselle MacKenzie  :'(  and some others I will find when I start scanning!

What a great subject.  ;D

My autographed playbill of Around the World in 80 Days the failed Orsen Welles/Cole Porter musical. Welles didn't sign it but Porter did and no I was not around when the musical premeried. The opening night playbill for Carrie: The Musical and no I did not see a friend of mine who passed gave it to me a few months before. I have other programs, cds autographed but they are not as important to me  as they once were. They are nice to have, but there are a lot more things in life that are more important.

Well, I feel as if I'm slowly getting back into the groove. I finished yesterday's notes, something I haven't done in weeks, and I'm caught up with today's notes so far.

My autographed Elaine Stritch At Liberty Playbill, along with a copy of the sheet music for Civilization (Bongo, Bongo, Bongo I Don't Want to Leave the Congo). Also, my autographed Playbill for Sweeney, signed by Mr. Cariou and Ms. Lansbury. We (Ant and I) have an original program from Jumbo (the Rodgers and Hart show) which we came across in a box of "junk" stored away in a room at the Equity office last year. We asked before we took and were told we could abscond with the goods. I'll have to look at home later since I'm at the office right now and nothing else pops to mind.

I'm happy to report that AccuRadio seems to be working (I've probably jinxed it and the next time I try it won't work). For the longest time all I could get was Swingin' Pop Standards which isn't bad but I couldn't for the life of me get the Broadway channel to work. I guess going away for a month (it also looks like they redesigned the site) has enabled me to listen to the Broadway channel. Hoo and Ray (different from WEL and Ray).

Like DR Panni, I went on a cleanup and throwout campaign and got rid of lots of theatre memorabilia. Among those treasures was an autographed playbill from The Diary of Anne Frank. Still, even without the playbill, I remember the impact that the show had, and the experience of waiting at the stage door as the cast members walked out one by one. I also chatted briefly with Shelley Winters, who reassured me that the the mink she wore in the play (a key scene: all of Mrs. Van Dann's hostility and frustration surfaced when Anne accidentally spilled milk on it) was a piece of junk.

I have the Playbills from every show I saw from "Pipe Dream" in 1956 through "Golda's Balcony" from last Friday.  In my youth, I got many autographed.  In 1957 or so, when I was really young, I remember getting Edie Adams, Peter Palmer and Charlotte Rae to sign my "Li'l Abner" Playbill.  I also used to cut the Hirschfeld drawings out of the NY Times and attempted to also get those autographed.  Some of those that I have include the Lansbury-signed "Mame" and the Merman-signed "Annie Get Your Gun" (revival).  I have the OBC LPs of every B'way musical from the year of the flood.  In the Hirschfeld arena, I also have signed limited edition etchings of his Mostel Tevya, and BS's TV "Belle of 14th Street".  I also have the original Hirschfeld pen and ink drawing that ran in the NY Times of BS and RR from "The Way We Were", which was also autographed by BS.  One of these days I'll make it my business to try to get RR to also sign it.

We have a collection of Norman Rockwell signed limited edition lithographs, two of which are theatre-related:  "The Charwomen" shows two cleaning ladies sitting in the theatre looking at a Playbill.  The Playbill is for "Carousel" (the original production), but the title is somewhat obliterated, so unless you knew what it was, you wouldn't know it to be "Carousel."  The other theatre-related Rockwell lithograph is "The Gaiety Dance Team," a forelorn couple sitting back-to-back on a theatre trunk.

Tonight we see "The Producers" again.  Last Friday, on a lark, I logged into Telecharge and was able to get a pair of decent orchestra seats at regular price and decided that we should see it again.  I'm convinced that a lot of the seats that were being held for premium $480 and $240 per ticket sales will be made available at regular prices as they don't sell at the inflated prices.

Although I stopped saving programs and Playbills® when I simply ran out of room I did save the program from the Off-Broadway A CHORUS LINE.  This program was mimeographed on plain paper (no pictures) instead of being printed on a glossy stock and was stapled together.  It does contain all the bios and other information.  I never knew if they ran out of the higher quality programs or if these were used for the entire NYSF run of the show.

Last Christmas when we were doing our usual gift bag volunteering we had to go upstairs to a little used office and bring down boxes of donated goods and any other materials that might be up there. Well, we are good volunteers and follow orders. We brought down all the boxes we could find, including one that had some CDs and other things, including the program from Jumbo. The higher ups were surprised that the box was up there. It didn't contain much more of importance other than the Jumbo program though. No other great finds. That's why I was rifling through boxes at Equity :-)

Woohoo! State offices are closed until 10:00am...I think I might try to go back to bed for a few.

I only have a few playbills and they are from plays that some of my favorite performers appeared in (but not plays that I have seen). I have a couple from shows that Michi Kobi did and a few from shows that Keith Andes did, and that is about it I'm afraid.

Last night after I went to bed, DRs Laura II and George finally decided to talk about Average Joe: :)

George--What do you think of Average Joe??

George wrote:
It'll be an interesting season (as any season would be).  She kept the several guys that I would've kept.  And I want to know if the adding of hunks this season will be the only twist.  There are eight (I think) this time, and last time there were only three.

I'm glad they are doing it differently this time and bringing in the hunks early. Last time they waited till we were down to 3 and I think most viewers were upset, because it seemed unfair.

Personally I wonder if she will find any she likes among the below averages. They mostly seemed so bizarre. And I'm sorry but that little matt b guy was so creepy!

Btw, I'm glad I stopped by the chat on a whim at 11pm ET. It was great to chat with DRs Swishy, Ann from Hawaii, Emily, Maya, Laura II, Sandra, Jed, and George.  And TCB showed up as I was leaving at midnight.

No, dear Jennifer. I am a mere 25 (with this post) away from God-like status. I shall achieve sometime soon. Once I get completely back into work and life in New York City I will post a picture or two and a tale or two about London and Nottingham (the Robin Hood Statue looks nothing like Errol Flynn) and I will move up the ladder, though I am afraid I will never catch up to you, dear Jennifer, unless, that is, you go on an extended vacation with limited internet access. Good morning!

Wow, there really was quite the BK-predicted posting frenzy last night!  And, yes, I was actually in bed by midnight last night - and didn't get up until 9:00!  Must be my body in post-Camelot mode.  And since I don't have rehearsal until 3:00 today...

Favorite theatrical souvenirs:

Somewhere in a box - still, I hope - I have the Playbills from my first trip to NYC.  Brighton Beach Memoirs, Biloxi Blues (signed by everyone but Mr. Broderick), and Tap Dance Kid.  A couple of years ago, I lost track of some of my high school programs, and I wish I could find them again - some of the closing night "autographs" were really well written and touching and inspiring.

Otherwise, I have a couple more signed posters - usually from the March and November BC/EFA fundraising campaigns.  My signed posters from the Kennedy Center's Sondheim Celebration.  Oh, and speaking of Mr. Sondheim, somewhere in a box I lost track of, is a series of short letters from Mr. Sondheim, including one classically "painful" correspondence wherein he basically tells me to "F*ck Off" - of course, he never uses those exact words, so it actually had/had quite the bite.  Ouch!  I'm not sure if I would call that a "most treasured" item... I can't even really laugh about it today - and it's been about 10 years, so...  -And it was a response to my response/reaction to the first preview performance of Passion on Broadway... Boy, did I not like the show in that time and version... Just goes to show...Even if you're asked for an opinion, sometimes...

I'm planning a major sorting and purging of my "detritus" in the next few weeks.  If I come across it, I'll post it... NOT!
Title: Re:PINS AND NEEDLES
Post by: Emily on January 06, 2004, 07:28:15 AM
I am really not a collector - I just refuse to throw stuff out... including stuff I will probably never look at again.

Case in point: I keep almost all of the playbills/programs to any show I have ever seen.  Don't ask me where most of them are, though, because I normally just toss them into the first empty drawer I see.  So I guess that doesn't constitute exactly as a "collection".

Overall, I don't even have all that many in the first place.  Lots from the Fringe Fest.   Proof, Copenhagen (with the guy from the X-Files) and The Cripple of Inishmaan from the Centaur Theatre.  And of course, my Ragtime, Wicked and Gypsy playbills from New York.  All of them are nice... but quite useless.

On my wall I have the beginnings of my JRB collection.  Yes, I am allowed to call two window cards (one official one for Parade and a photocopied non-card for The Last Five Years) a collection because I actually look at those occasionally ;)

OH!  And a tradition I picked up from one of my college professors... At the end of our last day in the rehearsal hall (before we move into the theatre), I take a small piece of the spike tape off the floor and put it on my score/script.  Kind of a reminder of where it all started.

Unfortunately, I think the piece of tape I took off from the Camelot floor fell off along the way.  I have a box-o-stuff to go through, and maybe it will turn up, I hope.

Hi, all--have been so busy lately, but have still had time to occasionally visit to read.  Today, as MBarnum has pointed out, is PANIC IN THE STREETS day in Oregon because we have had, Heaven forefend, SNOOOWWWWW!!  (Insert screaming and ponderous "Team Coverage" newsmuzak here), so I have time to sit and lounge.  I laugh at this NW panic, having grown up in the Wasatch Range outside of SLC (where my parents' home was at about 4500 feet elevation, so we knew from snow).

I have so much theatrical memorabilia it's frightening.  I have of course scores from the shows I've played, a la Jose.  But I also have a ton of Playbills from flop musicals, which I've collected for years.  I also, as you may suspect, have a lot of stuff from my fave actress Frances Farmer, including several signed Playbills from the Broadway and National Tour runs of Odets' Golden Boy.  My favorite weird autograph in that regard is the Washington DC run of Golden Boy in 1938, which has the signatures of the entire cast (Farmer, Kazan, Cobb, Malden, etc.), and then on the back cover, for some really bizarre reason, Fox starlet Arlene Whelan.  Hmmm.  Maybe she was the prompter that night.  I also have the very rare Playbill of the Robert Ardrey play Thunder Rock, which starred FF and Luther Adler and ran for about ten minutes in late 1939.

Finally I would like to add my 2 cents worth regarding the Karma discussion here a couple of days ago--I also think it's trivial, but have to agree with those who ask why even have a "boo" button at all, if we are supposedly a big, happy family?  I know that I personally was "dunned" Karma within about 10 seconds of complaining on the tech Board when I was having problems logging in.  Why in heaven's name (and who, I might ask) would be so childish as to do that?

Hope all the Northwesterners enjoy their day off!!

Okay, here's what an anal retentive I am...

...I save not only the Playbills from every show I see, but also the torn ticket stubs from every show as well.  And I also buy the damned souvenir booklets...every time.  It's a compulsion.  I have souvenir programs from shows that I hated, for Heaven's sake!

And in my brief theatrical career, I saved every program from every play I'd ever been involved in.  I don't remember being the floor manager for a production of L'IL ABNER, but I have the proof that I did it!  I understudied the part of Dracula (in DRACULA, of course), and I have the program and the little slip of paper announcing the switcheroo as well.

But my most treasured memento is directing ZOO STORY for a regional theatre in Wisconsin.  I cast two very inexperienced actors, a gamble which paid off immeasurably.  It was a pleasure to work on this play, made more so by the two gentle men in the cast.

Good morning. All this talk of playbills! It's ironic that I threw my treasured playbills away only a couple of months ago, thinking that's the end of that. Suddenly I've become part of a community of lovely people to whom they would actually mean something. Oh well... No use crying over spilled programs. The one thing I did recall this morning while reading about autographed programs in the posts, is that among the programs I must have thrown away was one I got as a teenager which was autographed by Helen Hayes. I'm not one for autographs, but as kid actress, seeing Helen Hayes on stage was really something. So I waited at the stage door of the Royal Alexandra Theater in Toronto and got her to sign my program. She was very gracious and it was a memorable moment. Then I stupidly put the playbill among all my other playbills. Who would've thunk back then that one day I'd throw them all away.  Oh well... No use crying over spilled Helen.

I'm on my laptop which is not connected to a scanner, but later today I'll scan some of the things that I love most.

Most valuable to me, I guess, are some Playbills from the 1920s. My grandmother took a trip to NYC and saw several shows and for some reason saved the Playbills. When I came across them, I begged her for them, and she was glad to get rid of them. Said she would have thrown them away if she had known they were in her "junk room."

I used to get the souvenir books when I went to shows in NYC, but often, if you were seeing the shows after some of the original stars left, you'd get their pictures who were not whom you were seeing in the show, so I stopped buying them. I think the last one I bought was for Pearl Bailey in HELLO DOLLY.

When I discovered eBay, I started hunting for Ethel Merman playbills. There were a surprising number of them (an awful lot of Panama Hatties) out there - "there" being every corner of the U.S. - and not always for outrageous sums. Over three or four years I managed to get one of every Ethel playbill (with the exception of Humpty Dumpty, which closed in Pittsburgh). Along the way, I met another collector (we were both bidding on Take a Chance), and we soon became friends.

I love collecting theatrical stuff. I really wish I had more.  I do save every playbill. And I try to save every ticket stub.  I like the autographed stuff the most.  I love my broadway snowglobe. I love my autographed "sign marquees" from AGYG and SIDE SHOW.  I actually love playbills even from shows I have not seen.

I put myself to bed at 9:30 p.m.   There was no use pretending I was alert or in any way capable of being cogent.

I was tired from my first day back at work.  There was lots to do, with a bunch of the little irritating things that bug me gratuitously thrown in for good measure...and on a Monday, too.

As for chat last night...well, my computer doesn't let me do anything with alt-anything in chat.  I'm glad others have the capability, but it wasn't in my stars.  The experiment -- which seemed to involve two or three folks, tops -- should not have kept the other five or six folks from talking, too, but maybe they were also experimenting.  It may have gone on a few minutes, but it seemed like forever as I was desperately trying to stimulate conversation.  It seemed I was talking to myself and my tired old brain wouldn't let me continue on.

But my evening go no better -- couldn't concentrate for beans on anything.  So sleep seemed to be the ticket.

Doesn't anyone other than I think it odd that so few guys show up in chat?  We had a day last week when we were all guys -- about 7 of us.  First time there have ever been that many of us in chat and the first time no lady has ever joined in the chat.  Man!  Did WE have something to talk about or WHAT????  :)

Last night, the norm returned with a few men and twice as many ladies.  While I was there, anyway.  And Jennifer joined at a time when it was mostly ladies, too.

Today is cold and dark.  Rain is forecast.  I slept many hours, but I don't feel rested or refreshed.  I feel achy and cranky!

Oh, well...........

Theatrical treasures:  Autographed Playbill with San Francisco cast of "Wicked"!  And an NYC Playbill signed by Menzel and Chenoweth!

A prop from Luhrmann's "La Boheme" -- an artist's palette signed by all three NYC casts (except the Russian soprano) on one side, and by all the production staff on the other side.

Original window cards for "A Little Night Music" and "Dream Girls"!  Original souvenir programs for "The Music Man," "She Loves Me" (including a gorgeous handbill with photos), and many others I cannot remember.  I went through a buying spree last fall that saw many such treasures arrive in bulk.  I've not catalogued or sorted through them.  I have tons of autographs and signed caricatures, photos -- Kaner and Ebb, Comden and Green, Styne, Sondheim, Herman, Loesser, Bock, et.al.   No big oldies, though...no Porter or Rodgers or Hammerstein or Coward or Berlin.

Has anyone out there seen the new "Peter Pan"?  I'd like to know what anyone thinks of it.

DR Ron, the consensus on PETER PAN suggests that it's well made and faithful to the story but lacking in certain fundamental issues like believable sets and interesting Lost Boys. Of course, I thought the Lost Boys in HOOK were so horrendous that I'm not sure I'd ever want to see another PAN that included them.

Well, I am no longer on PINS AND NEEDLES: I got the phone call this morning.
I am officially playing Carl, the astronomy professor, in Lanford Wilson's SYMPATHETIC MAGIC! ! ! ! !
I guess that the good vibes  and the callback reading were the right combination!
Thanks, DRs! ! !

Theater memorabila which I am most excited to own:
PLAYBILL/SHOWBILLs from every Betty Buckley performance in NYC and environs, BUT, somehow or other lacking THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD ! ! !

Speaking of Betty, here we are at NYC's The Bottom Line during a Halloween gig with best friend Janet.

I'm not sure if this counts, but, I also have accumulated quite a few song sheets ("Everybody's Girl," "It's a Priveledge to Pee," "You'd be Surprised" and all of SIDE SHOW) in their primitive states. . .also quite a few Maury Yeston songs from TITANIC, some special material written for Davis Gaines. . .etc, etc.

Mostly I try to collect autographs on cd bookets. . .
and photos of me with celebs. . .I'd show you the picture of Douglas Sills and me, but, I don't want to be bitch-slapped by Mark. . .besides, I don't believe I've scanned it, yet. . .

Lessee, theatrical memorabilia...

When it comes to playbills, there's the one from Into the Woods.  No, not the Broadway production, the one from the original production at the Old Globe in San Diego.  The song list is different, and it's got the insert with an updated song list ("No One is Alone" hadn't been written when the production began, but it was in place when der Brucer and I saw it.)

Der Brucer's the one with the big Playbill collection.  He's also got an amazing t-shirt collection, some of which are x-rated, but that's another story.

The most prized posession?  A t-shirt, again from something we saw.  Once again, it's Sondheim related.  And once again it's from the real thing, not the New York repeat.  It's from the Company reunion concert.  Not the one held in April of 1993 at the Lincoln Center, which was actually three performances.  This was a one-time only performance, and it was held in Long Beach, under the auspices of the Long Beach Civic Light Opera at the Terrace Theater, on Saturday, January 23, 1993, a full three months before the NYC carbon copies.

What had happened was that Barry Brown, who was running the LBCLO at the time, had been the lover of one of the backstage crew (I'm blanking on exactly who, sorry).  The lover had died of AIDS.  So had choreographer Michael Bennett.  So had the second Broadway Robert, Larry Kert.  Brown decided that a fitting tribute to his lover and Bennett and Kert would be to stage a reunion concert of Company, raising funds for AIDS charities and the LBCLO.  The top tix went for $500, which included a reception afterwards; next level down was $100, and there were balcony seats that went for $50.

Der Brucer, knowing me to be this total Sondheim nutcase, decided to get tickets.  Silly him, he thought he'd be able to get the top tier tix even after waiting a few days after the first ad appeared in the LA Times Calendar section.  He was lucky to get the $100 tix, they were selling hotter than hotcakes!  The night of the event, which was very black-tie, there were people outside, dressed in very elegant formalwear, begging to get in!

And yes, although it wasn't announced earlier, Mr. Sondheim, Mr. Prince, and Mr. Furth were all there, and shared in the final bows.  (Der Brucer was kicking himself for not getting those $500 tix!  I forgave him long ago.)

The t-shirt has a few interesting notes.  It reads "Starring the Original Broadway Cast," but this isn't exactly correct.  Merle Louise and Charles Braswell were unable to attend, and their parts were played by subsequent Broadway players Alice Cannon and Stanley Grover.  The musical staging, based on Bennett's original work, was by George Martin.  The concert was hosted by Angela Lansbury, and narrated by George Hearn.  (Only Hearn would be present for the NYC carbons.)

All of this is on the back of the shirt, which very much resembles the Company logo we all know and love...well, some don't love it, but I always have.

The front of the shirt carries a single line, four simple words in purple, right above the heart:

"Never Before...Never Again"

At the time, who knew?

I'm pretty much back to normal today.  Still a little tired, but otherwise the flubug seems to have left.  It was really strange starting to feel sick while watching a show.  Helen Gallagher is one of the wonders of the modern world:   a musical comedy cutie in the 40s and 50s to a mature musical star in the 60s and 70s (with 2 Tonys from those periods) and then on to a Soap Opera matriarch (with 3 Emmys) and now a serious stage actress.  She and co-star Nicholas Surovey were far better than the stereotyped script of HANDY DANDY deserved.  William Gibson's play about a women with 3 dvorces and two annulments who become a nun specializing in peace demonstrations and the judge who has to try her for tresspassing is anything but new --- you can guess where it is going within five minutes --- but these two really breathed life into it and made it worth seeing, even as the flu bug tok over my body during the two hours of the show.

Although it is commonly agreed at HHW that Mr. Brent Barrett is the world's sexiest man (or something to that effect, I forget the exact phraseology), I do think that Mr. Michael Berresse gives him a close run for the money. I think I have almost every program of every stage show I've seen.  I've also collected a few rare ones that I just craved.  Being a John Barrymore fan, I have an original Hamlet program from his London production at the Haymarket.  I also have a Hamlet from the Peter O'Toole production directed by Olivier which was the first National Theatre production.   I have programs from theatre productions of favourite novels of mine.  One from the late eighteen hundreds for SHE by Rider Haggard; one from the twenties for SCARAMOUCHE starring British actor/manager John Martin-Harvey; one from the flop production of BEAU GESTE which starred Laurence Olivier and was directed by Basil Dean.  I would love to find the playscripts for these productions.

The rest  of the last 24-hours has been embroiled in this nasty guild business.  Phone calls to and from various members, board members, and former board members all about this crap over our president's ineligibility.  Thankfully, I hear she has resigned. Which is what she should do.  The guild does not need this embarrassing black-eye.  The thing is all this was known before the election and at the time of the election and was brought up and suppressed.  Thankfully it has properly come out and, I think, it is for the better.  Charles Holland, who I felt should have run for president last election, will now be a strong president and a fierce negotiator, and we can get on with the business at hand.  Vickie Riskin and I started out on the WGA Board together as allies back in '97, but over my four years on the board I have felt she has abandoned important issues and drifted so far apart from her positions that I did not support her for president  of the Guild for either of her terms.

"All the great hit songs from Broadway shows of our main Broadway channel, plus hundreds more obscure tunes for the die-hard fan!"

Hooray for another paid day off from work, George!

I've been watching some of the non-stop Seattle news coverage of the snow.  I know there are some real traffic messes, but I do have to chuckle some when they do non-stop coverage for the 2-1/2" (of snow, people!) in Seattle. :)  Over on my side of the Cascades, it's been snowing lightly for about 3 hours now, but only about 1/2" (of snow, people!) so far.  Supposed to get 6-8" (of snow, people!) later in the day.

I did go get some yummilicious pancakes this morning, and they were, well, yummilicious. :D

Some of my prized theater memorabilia - a rather good collection of first edition plays, including fifty or sixty musicals.  The best of those is my signed copy of Anyone Can Whistle (the original first edition of that is incredibly rare - it and my first of Gypsy are the only things I've ever asked Sondheim to sign for me), and my inscribed first of The Fantasticks (two long and lovely inscriptions from Harvey and Tom).  I also have a wonderfully inscribed copy of Damn Yankees from when I worked with Richard Adler.  I have both Playbill and souvenir program for Li'l Abner which, of course, I love.  I have a signed by Edward Albee playbill from Lolita, I have several signed firsts of Albee plays, I have a first of S.N. Behrman's The Pirate, signed by him, I have lots of interesting and rare sheet music, several bound volumes of the marvelous Theatre Arts magazine, many of which have whole plays printed within, and on and on.

At HANDY DANDY, while waiting for the theatre to open, a girl in her young teens happened to mention that her father was in the show.  Since I knew it was a two character show I commented that I was a big fan of her grandmother.  She even looked like a young Rse Stevens.  Unfortunately I wasn't sure if her grandmother had passed away or not (I found out later she is still very much alive) so I didn't want to say too much.  Those of you DRs who don't know Ms. Stevens from her days as the Met's reigning Carmen probably know her from her film appearances, most notably in "Going My Way".

As to who is Nicholas Surovey (besides Ms. Steven's son), he is one of those actors you have probably seen dozens of times is secondary roles on stage, in films and on television without knowing his name.  He may be best known as Mike Roy on ALL MY CHILDREN... the one true love of Erica Kane's life until he "died".  Years later when he came back from the dead (it is a soap after all) she had found many other one true loves.

Jennifer, the trick is not to be down, down, down (that is three downs which is way too many downs, more than Churchill), the trick is to be up, up, up, up where we belong.

Who knows what tomorrow brings
In a world, few hearts survive
All I know is the way i feel
When it's real, I keep it alive

The road is long, there are mountains in your way
But we climb a step every day

Love lift us up where we belong, where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong, far from the world below
up where the clear winds blow

Some hang on to used to be
Live their lives, loking behind

All we have is here and now
All our life, out there to find

The road is long, there are mountains in our way,
But we climb them a step ev'ry day

Love lift us up where we belong, where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong, far from the world
We know, up where the clear winds blow

Time goes by, no time to cry, life's you and I
A live today

Love lift us up where we belong, where the eagles cry
On a mountain high
Love lift us up where we belong, far from the wolrd
We know, where the clear winds blow

I think I shall be headed for bed, as well.  If I don't get a call for work in the morning, I think I may go get some pancakes.  Pity I can't get DuPar's up here!  Heck, can't even get IHOP in this town.  But, I know a couple places that are supposed to be swell for breakfast, so I do have options.

Not even an Original House of Pancakes?  Of course you are probably better off.  I treated myself to pancakes at Dupar’s last time I was in Los Angeles, something I haven’t done in around fifteen years.  It is just so fattening and unhealthy.  But boy was it good.

No, not even one of those.  So I settled for a local place called Smitty's, which specializes in breakfast.  Quite tasty and filling.  I'm thinking that I'll have to try out DuPar's next time I go to L.A... although who knows when the heck that will be.

I always thought it would be interesting to have an IHOP that was the International House of Plays, where troupes of performers went around to the tables and did scenes that the customers chose from the menu -

"I will have a scene of Williams, and a side order of Albee, please."

Mea culpa.  I should have phrased my question as "Who is Nicholas Surovy's mother?"

Oh, yes. Congrats to TD. I know a lot of Wilson's work but I don't know this particular piece. I'm admitting a lot of things today.

Sympathetic Magic Lanford Wilson

Drama
Full Length

Cast: 5 men, 3 women: 8 total
Setting: UNIT SET

Winner of the 1997 Obie Award for best play. "Lanford Wilson’s idiosyncratic SYMPATHETIC MAGIC is his best play yet...the rare play you WANT...chock-full of ideas, incidents, witty or poetic lines, scientific and philosophical argument...you’ll find your intellectual faculties racing." —NY Magazine. "The mystery of the unexplored universe and the mystery of artistic creation begin to re-volve around the more familiar mystery of life on earth and why we keep reproducing it. She does something unwise, he does something unforgivable. The result changes them and everyone in their intimate circle, irrevocably. The play ends where it started, with the scientist lecturing about the inexplicable nature of the universe and the "dark matter" of which it seems to be largely composed; only now we’ve experienced what he means. Wilson has made the dark matter in human beings tangible; particularly in the scientist, whom we come to like and understand before he does something monstrous, and who re-mains understandable—and no monster—afterwards. The script is like a fully notated score, next to which most new plays are cursory lead sheets." —Village Voice

THE STORY: Liz Barnard is an anthropologist studying West Coast gangs for behavior similar to African tribes. Her son, Don, is a homosexual Episcopal minister whose parishioners are poor and many sick with AIDS. Liz’s daughter, Barbara, is a gifted sculptress whose current breakthrough show launches a stellar career. Barbara lives with Ian, a brilliant young astronomer and popular university professor who, along with his colorful colleague Mickey, stumbles upon a spectacular discovery at the edge of the galaxy. They want to study the find further, but the chairman of their department, Carl Conklin White, a by-the-book administrator, snatches up this startling find before all the facts are in. Along with this discovery, Ian and Barbara find that despite all precautions, Barbara is pregnant. Having agreed to no children, Barbara prepares for an abortion, but Ian wants to hold off as he has new thoughts about children and carrying on the human race. The mysteries of the universe and of human and artistic creation begin to mix for Ian and his friends. But when Barbara has the abortion, Ian becomes a person he never expected, and in front of friends and family, he attacks Barbara. His actions change everyone around him, mirroring the change in life when discovery leads the way.

Not sure if it counts as a theatrical souvenir, but my most treasured treasure would have to be the letter from Richard Rodgers.

When I was a callow youth, I invited all my teenager friends over to celebrate Rodgers' 75th birthday.  My mother, who'd never written to a celebrity, wrote RR, figuring he'd like to know.  He wrote back that hearing of her son Noel's party brought him more pleasure than a White House concert where the president had said some very nice things about him.

Congrats to TD on the role! :D

DR Ron - I saw the new Peter Pan and thought it was okay.  Lots of that newfangled fake-looking CGI if you are into that, although it was less annoying because the movie's a fantasy and it's not required to look as real.  Quite a lot of sexual tension for a supposed children's movie, hehe.  The highlights of the movie for me were Jason Isaacs (his Hook was more likable than Peter Pan, IMO) and Ludivigne Sagnier, who made a fine Tink.  As DR Matt has read, the Lost Boys and Princess Tiger Lily were rather wasted as characters, as the story focused mostly on Peter, and Wendy and her brothers.

Like DR Emily, I wouldn't call myself a collector, it's more that I won't throw things away.  So somewhere in the boxes I never touch are programs and ticket stubs from everything I've seen.  I suppose the items most valuable to me are the ones I've waited to get autographed, like the CD booklet from Hairspray, which also stands out in my memory because all of the cast were so darn nice.  I was excited to get my playbill from The Boy from Oz signed, although I didn't actually get to meet Hugh Jackman because he was doing a backstage meet and greet.  :(  I have playbills signed by Kristin Chenoweth and Robert Sean Leonard (not from the same show, obviously) that I am fond of because I really admire both.

Is it possible to collect experiences?  I've met famous people before and felt embarrassed to ask for an autograph or picture, but I love being able to tell the story of having met them.  It's just not as fun when you don't have anything to show for it.

I concur with Dear Reader LC's take on the Peter Pan now in theatres.  It is interesting in its difference from previous versions by way of the more central role that Wendy plays.  It's not an unpleasant way to spend a couple of hours in a movie theatre.

On the whole, the Disney animated version is superior, IMHO.  And though it's been decades since I saw it on TV, I still have some very strong (and positive) recollections of the musical version of Peter Pan that starred Miss Mary Martin.  Cyril Ritchard's performance as Captain Hook was priceless.

By the way, and strictly for the record, I do believe in fairies.

In my earlier post today I forgot to mention that I also have a collection of show window cards.  In our guest powder room, I have a framed large Follies poster as well as a framed Funny Girl window card on permanent exhibition.  On a different wall I have six other framed window cards from current shows, which I keep changing as shows come and go, or just get old.  Currently, we have Lion King, Aida, Millie, Producers, and Mamma Mia, but I want to replace a couple (Millie and Aida) with Wicked and Boy From Oz.  Having done this for a number of years, I have a large collection of  window cards.

For my daugher's Bat Mitzvah, some 16+ years ago, the theme for the reception was Allison on Broadway.  I made a large ticket booth that was framed with about 20 of such window cards, where the guests were given "tickets" that indicated a current show name.  Each table had a Playbill of one of those shows so the guests matched their ticket with the Playbill on the table, rather than looking for a table number.  Each center piece incorporated flowers in an upside down top-hat, with a cane coming out, as well as a photo of my daughter pasted onto a silver star.  The lobby of the catering facility was also decorated with about 15 5-foot tall standup cut-outs of blown-up Hirschfelds of Broadway legends such as Verdun, Martin, Merman, Mostel, Preston, Davis, Vereen, Grey, Andrews/Harrision, Brynner, etc., etc., an so forth.  The kids dais had large 5-foot color logos of famous female logos (Mame, Hirschfeld Channing logo (used on BK's revival CD), Verdun photo from Charity, Funny Girl upside down roller skating logo, and Annie).  A big marquee hung over the kids table saying Allison on Broadway.  I also had a big white plexiglass sheet made to look like a Playbill, which was used as a guest sign-in board.  We also had dressed my daugher up in a Chorus Line costume about six weeks before her Bat Mitzvah and took a number of photos of her outside the Shubert Theatre, then playing A Chorus Line.  Those photos were blown up into posters and also on display.  Each kid got a tee-shirt, which I had printed with the Playbill logo on them, which were individually personalized saying their name "on Broadway".  In any event, a large collection of all these Hirschfeld cutouts remain in my basement together with the stuff we did three years later for our son's Bar Mitzvah, the theme of which was comic book superheros and comic strips.  My wife won't let me throw any of the stuff out, since it took us so much time and effort to make.

Umm, td, so are you Tally?

No, I'm afraid not.  Sounds like your experience was a lot of fun, though!

Umm. . is there a Tally in the script?  I think not.  I will be portraying Carl Conklin White the head of the astronomy department, and if there is a *villain* in the piece, White's action would place him as the villain.

Anyway, rehearsals begin Tuesday night at 7pm.

Well, as you have already learned from others on this site, the fabled Northwest (hmm, I typed Nothwet, which would be something else entirely) snow has arrived.  I went to bed last night still doubting the storm would materialize (I believe in fairies, more than weathermen), and yet I woke to a beautiful blanket of white.  By 11:00 a.m. we had five inches, but in true manly fashion, I told the women downstairs that I had ten.  The snow completely stopped about an hour ago, but it is now back even stronger than before.  They are still saying that it will turn to rain this evening, but, just in case it doesn't, we have cancelled rehearsal for the murder mystery tonight.

I have the whole day AND evening free!

Oh I almost forgot, I have photos to scan!

From October, 1962 - Come On Strong!  I wanted to see it because I wanted to see the girl from BIG COUNTRY and BUT NOT FOR ME and GIANT....and there she was!

I don't remember why Van signed it twice!  But Carroll Baker remains the MOST beautiful woman I have EVER seen in my life!  After signing autographs and telling us to send our friends to see the show, she (wearing a beautiful light brown fur coat) got into a big white limo with an old man....laughing that wonderful laugh....  I still lose my breath when I think about it.

Van walked away with someone I thought looked like Tommy Djilas from THE MUSIC MAN....and it might have been...LOL.  I worked with him the next summer in SHOWBOAT!

Glad I have that KISS ME KATE performance on DVD even if the knuckleheaded director Michael Blakemore cut to reaction shots instead of letting us see every second of that breathtaking "Bianca" number.

I have few theater mementos, but not very many.  I don’t even keep souvenirs from most of the shows that I have done myself.  I didn’t even know how many shows I had done till someone counted them up for me several years ago (I haven’t kept count much better since).  I have my Once Upon A Mattress program signed by Imogene Coca, King Donavon, and Edward Everett Horton; probably two or three Peter Pan Playbills signed by Sandy Duncan (I saw it four or five times), and two copies of the Playbill from the first preview of Titanic-The Musical which contains the songs that were later cut and also has the original Titanic poster design with the black background and the word Titanic as part of the design of the ship.

I have some other autographed photos (Angela Lansbury, Antonio Banderas, Streisand) and some other autographed CDs (including Night of the Hunter, BK, signed by Stephen Cole) and Playbills, but they are mostly tucked away in boxes.

I agree with LC that some of my best mementos are my memories of celebrities that I have met and talked to who were kind and generous with their time.

Sneaking a post from MTI...

Today I met Ms. Jeanine "MODERN MILLIE" Tesori and Tony "ANGELS IN AMERICA" Kushner. They were here for a meeting that I assume was in regard to CAROLINE, OR CHANGE--their new show. I'm guessing that we'll pick it up since we have all of Jeanine's other stuff. It was nice to meet them. Zina was here today, too....not Xena...Zina.

I have all of my playbills...even the ones from tours that I saw in Louisville. Most of those are still back in Kentucky, but I have all of my Broadway Playbills at my apartment (I've seen over 80 shows in two years...I think that's pretty cool). My most prized ones are the Opening Night Full Color Cover of DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES and AMOUR. I also have two of THE LAST FIVE YEARS (in color) and URBAN COWPOKE, all of the Kennedy Center Sondheim Festival Playbills as well as BOUNCE! Oh! And I have THE VISIT from Chicago, starring Ms. Chita Rivera. I think another of my most prized Playbills is from the London stage production of BUGSY MALONE starring a young Catherine Zeta-Jones. I'll see if I can scan that one...

I think I'm coming down with a cold. I'm chugging orange juice whenever possible, and I know I need some sleep...I hope I don't get sick. And I wish these d@!$ed phones would stop ringing!!!!

Jane:  We're up high (well, high for Portland at about 600 feet) so we have probably 10 inches to a foot.  Unfortunately it's changing to sleet and freezing rain now.  The good news is I've had a blast driving around in the 4 wheel drive SUV we got last year.  The bad news is the Portland hoi polloi who barely know how to drive in sunny weather continue to attempt to drive today with 2 wheel drive and no chains.  Some idiot lady this morning was going about 2 mph in front of me and then just stopped in the middle of the street with no warning!  When I had the temerity to give her a little toot on my horn (not even a bonafide honk I might add), she rolled down her window and flipped me off with her elegantly gloved hand.

"Good Morning America," "The Today Show" AND CBS's "The Early Show" were all pre-empted and the local Seattle stations had nothing but coverage of the snow storm.  They didn't even show "The Ellen DeGeneres Show"!  How rude! >:(

Jennifer, shopping on Ebay ALWAYS makes me feel better! Ha!

But seriously, if you are continuing to feel blue you really should see your doctor, it is terrible to be down in the dumps for too long of a period of time! He can make it so that it is easier to deal with what is upsetting you.

I tried to answer this before but the computer froze.

I actually don't buy much on ebay, and what I do buy is usually for the guy.  But I did but the 2 charms. Only like $10 for both with shipping.  I figure if $10 will make me feel better, it is worth it :)

I did get outbid by like 2 seconds, which made me mad. Cause my computer was really slow. And I would have won. But I ended up getting something very similar for much less.

As for seeing a doctor.  Well can he cure love blues? :(

I do have minor anxiety attacks. And I have pills for that. But I don't really like pills.  Thanks for your concern though. I appreciate it.

TCB - Sally was not there, she was busy practicing for her GIDGET tv audition.

That's okay MATTH - I don't recognize any of the names, so I couldn't put it to the face anyway.

And Constance was still lovely and elegant.  I don't remember her looking much different than that picture....but then she was a lot taller than I was - then!

And nice younger pictures TD and MattH!

Hello all,

I'm sorry I haven't been here.  I haven't been feeling very well these past few days. I wish I could say I feel much better but I'm still not up to par.

I've tried to at least read the posts whenever I could.  Thank you to those who sent the good vibes & well wishes.  I didn’t sign on because I didn’t want you to see my name and wonder why I wasn’t posting.  My eyes were/are all messed up and I’ve having a really hard time reading the computer screen on top of everything else.

I'm so glad the skier was found safe and sound.  What a blessing it must have been for his family to see him again.

I'm so excited about the pictures from Mars!  I can't believe we are finely exploring other planets.  I was one of the one's who fully expected us to be much further along in our space exploration by this stage of my lifetime. But then I also thought we would have a 3 day work week as well.  Sigh!  Shows what I know.

I'm very sorry I missed the chat last night.  I wanted to say, Bruce, that I really liked the idea of it being an hour earlier.  I would have signed in but it goes so fast that I have a hard time sometimes keeping  up with it when I feel well.  It took everything I had just to make it through work yesterday and I thought I needed the rest more.

I bought a late Christmas gift for myself in the form of a new PDA.  An iPAQ Pocket PC.  I'm just starting to learn to use it.  In fact, I'm typing tins on the bus on the way to work using Pocket  Word.  We'll see if I have a problem uploading this to where I can cut and paste this onto the board tonight.

One very sad thing to tell.  My fish--the one I keep at my desk at work passed away sometime over the weekend.  I was very upset when some people at work said it was silly to cry for him. I know he was just a little fish but he was mine and I loved him. What do they know?

I already miss him greatly.  I think I have looked over at his tank a hundred times already.  I don't know if I will get another one or not.  I'll have to think about it.

As far as the karma points/levels go, they don't mean very much to me.  I tend to go off on them because it's my way of poking fun at them.  Kinda like when I became Broadway Legend on BWW.

The whole thread was nothing more than my way of acting/playing around.  There’s nothing I love more than having someone to fun around with something I say and I like to play it to the hilt.

I drive’em crazy down at work.  We received an e-mail the other day saying that the PIMMS report was unavailable.  Now, understand, I have absolutely NO idea WHAT a PIMMS report is but I told my boss I was very upset that it was unavailable and I didn’t know how I could be expected to do my job without it.  She knows me now so she told me to just do my best and muddle through without it.

We received an e-mail today saying that the PIMMS report is back up and on line.  I told my boss that my world was now complete and I am ecstatic that it is now there for all to behold.  She said she is thrilled for me.  I told her it’s the little things in life that make it all worth while.

Wow!  Long post and I'm STILL on the bus to work.  Bad traffic, I guess.

As an add on—this uploaded perfectly from my new PDA.  Whooho!  I feel a little better tonight but will still hit the hay a bit early tonight.

Thanks again for all the well wishes.

I have decided against doing errands this evening in the hopes I don’t regret my decision tomorrow when, or if it rains.

Yesterday our local paper finally had a news story on the missing skier now that he has been found.  It was a decent article describing how he was found, though lacking the personal story we had here at HHW.

Well, home early. They closed all of the state offices at 3pm...probably shouldn't have opened them in the first place.

I helped my supervisor scrape inches of freezing rain off of her car windshield with credit cards...she didn't have an ice scraper! And then she drove me to my car which is parked about 6 or seven blocks away.

We shall see what the winter weather brings tomorrow! Salem doesn't usually get this kind of weather!

WOWZA! YOWZA! WOWZA!

I go away for a few hours to do some work and go to a very short(!) rehearsal, and I come back to over nine pages of notes to go through - it was just on page 3 when I last checked - and about 250 posts!  Truly a frenzy!  F-R-E-N-Z-Y!

I actually was able to get three charts "outlined" this afternoon before heading to rehearsal.  Once at rehearsal, the MD said he was "Hun-gur-ry!", so we headed over to Cosi so he could get a sandwhich - and I got a salad.  Then we started rehearsing, well it was more like a work-thru.  We just went song by song checking to make sure we both had the right chords and melodies in our heads - the composer/playwright didn't write anything down.  Luckily, it's kind of a pop-py and folksy "score" (it's just seven songs), so transcribing the chords was an easy job - although, all those inverted chords kind of stumbled us a few times.  We were working on the piano in theatre while they were still building the set.  And we actually got some good work done among all the hammering, sanding (lots of dust), scraping and vacuuming that was going on.  I was supposed to stay until 8:00, but the MD said to go on home since he was back, so... After fighting the typical DC rush hour traffic, I was back home around 5:15!  Not a bad "day"!

And then to turn on my laptop and see all the posting that's been going on!  WOWZA!

While reading all the posts, I decided to sample the flavors in on a box of Hershey's Pot of Gold truffles.  Not bad at all.  I was just going to have two or three pieces, but I ended up sampling one each of the six flavors... and I had the "signature" milk chocolate bar too.  Ah, well... -And the chocolate kind of tasted old too... Not bad, mind you, just old.  ???

I'll probably do my best to finish up the rest of the charts tonight - only four songs left - well, actually three, since one of the songs will be done on guitart by the MD, and he'll be doing his own chart for that one.  So...

It is a shame how many people just don’t get it.  And it isn’t just with a fish it’s with all pets.  Even if they can’t feel such losses you would expect more compassion simply because you are hurting.

Feel better and I’m really sorry about your fish. :( Did he have a name?

Thanks for the pic of the NEW FACES OF 1952 program.

Every time I see a picture of PAUL LYNDE, it makes me smile.  I felt a strange rapport with Mr. Lynde when I was a youngun; only after I went through puberty did I know just what that rapport was, but that, as they say, is another story.

The other day I caught a cablecast of HOLLYWOOD SQUARES on teevee, which had Mr. Peter Marshall ask of Mr. Lynde:

"When a man falls overboard from a ship, it's proper to yell 'Man Overboard'.  What does one yell when a WOMAN falls overboard?"

"Full speed ahead," quipped Mr. Lynde.

God help me, I love that guy!

Thanks, DR Jason, for the Assassins Marquee pic!  YEAH!!!

*On one of my trips to Triton Gallery in NYC, I picked up the poster from the London production.  Great image!  The stripes of the American flag become slats in a set of Venetian blinds... with an assassin (Hinckley - ?) peeking through them.  Very haunting.  I just wish it was printed on something more substantial than brown "paper bag" paper.  But, still, what a great image - and the brown paper actually adds to the whole eeriness of it.

Thank you MBarnum and Jane.  I never really named him but I sorta called him "Fishbutt".  That came about when we kept having all the fire/disaster drills.  I wasn't going to leave him behind so I practiced "packing" him up in a small jar with a screw lid so I wouldn't slosh his water everywhere.

People laughed about it but I would say that if anything happened, his Fish butt was going where mine was so I started calling him "Fish butt".

Did we pass 17,000 posts yet?

I'm sorry to read about the fish, too.  I have friends here who have gone through tons of fish at their desk.  It's a sad, sad thing when tank fish float!

Especially when one doesn't know why they died.

I mean, did some little fin reaper pass by and spirit them away, or was it something in the water....or????

I really mean it when I say I'm sorry, but I have this little perverse imagination, too, and it seems irreverent even when I am being sincere.

Danise Keith said he had the same problem with his fish at work, their dying and few people understanding how upsetting it was.  He stopped getting fish.  When our son was two years old he wanted fish so I purchased a couple of beautiful glass fish and put them in a bowl with rocks and plants.  They looked very pretty, very realistic until you noticed they weren’t moving, and we never lost them.  He may still have them tucked away in a drawer.

Jed, I like the Swiss Turkey Ranch sandwich.  Yum!

Wow, your lucky, Jose!  I had a Casio PDA but the headphone jack was on the bottom where you had to put it in the craddle.  Since I listen to MP3's al the time, I kept puting the headphone in and finely broke it.

I played with the idea of getting an Ipod but I'm more into multi-functional than just a MP3 player.  As in less space/weight in the old purse.  It's already the most deadly weapon known to man.  If I hit anyone with it, I could kill them.  No joke.

I'm still learning to use it but I do like it.  I haven't tried the voice recorder or the MS reader yet but looking forward to the reader.

Bruce, is there a downloadable version of your books?

-And I could actually see Matt Bogart playing Lancelot -for the third time - in this revival.

Just as long as Mrs. Neeson - Natasha Richardson - is not up for Guenevere.... Ouch!  Although, she could be a fun Morgen Le Fey.  Hmmm...

A couple of comments on above posts:

Annie Miller did the musical MAME and Connie Bennett did the non-musical AUNTIE MAME.  I don't think either did the other version, so in all probability the Bennett Playbill® came first.  I saw Celeste Holm in the musical version.  She was okay although her late husband Wes Addy was his usual boring self as Beau.  Gooch was played by a pre-M*A*S*H Loretta Swit.

NEW FACES OF 1952 will be out on DVD later this month.  I hope it is Widescreen and not the poorly done Pan and Scan version that is on VHS.  I wish that the version that was televised on Play-of-the-Week on 1961 would be released.  It was called "Best of New Faces" but was almost all 52 with only a couple of people or numbers from 56.

I have never eaten at a Quizno's (they are just starting to open around NYC) but the photography (or printing) in their color newspaper ads is so awful that the food does not look very good.  I hope it looks better in person.

I'm not offended, Ron.  I do the same thing sometimes.  :)

He lived for over  2 1/2 years so he did have a full life.  I don't know exactly how old he was when I bought him.  They only live about 3 years or so I read on the I-net.

Back when I first got him a bunch of people got one as well.  They were doing that plant/fish in a jar thing.  It's sick because they were told they didn't have to feed their fish--he would live off of the plant.  What a big fat lie.

I read on the net that when you see a fish eating off of a plant, it's like you being locked in a room with a couch.  If I looked in and saw you so hungry you were eating the stuffing out of the couch, I could tell people, "See you don't need to feed him/her"  They live off the couch."  They do it because they are starving to death.  The whole process takes about 60 days.

I fed my fish 3 times a day, not counting treats.  I bought a fish feeder for the weekends and holidays so he would never go without.  The feeder cost about $35.00--the fish about $2.99 but I didn't care.  He had to eat!  I cleaned him once a week with fresh drinking water NOT tap water.

I would just like to add that my fish lived the longest of any of those poor babies.  I wonder why.

Wow! You've all been BUSY while I was away! So many posts! I quickly skimmed some, will read more later. So where is this KRITZER TIME preview? I can't find the first mention of it. Want to read it. Where to go, please?
What a great afternoon I had.  Went to visit a composer friend who has a home studio. We had tea and chatted (he's very British) and he told me about the album of love poems he's just recorded with Michael York. He asked me if I'd be interested in recording some of my stuff and when I hesitated, he said in his lovely British way, "You must try it, darling." He set up the mic, put earphones on me, gave me an Elizabeth Barrett Browning love poem I'd never set eyes on before, put on his earphones and improvised at the keyboard while I read. The reverb made me sound positively wonnnnnderrrrfulllll. At first I was afraid of making an utter fool of myself, but after a few minutes, my old acting chops started to warm up and I was emoting the love poem like crazy. It was so much FUN!
I'm taking my dog for a walk now. I hope when I return to find the answer to my K.T. question.

I'd imagine it IS pretty exciting to see something you've worked on showing up on the net.

I have some author friends who have told me the thing they hate the worst is the used book store.  I can understand why.

I've tried my hand at wrting but I'm not very good.    I wrote one DOTV story last year and I have a couple of old stories/poems somewhere out there in fanzines from years and years ago.  I can't even remember my pen name now. Oh, well. :D

So many posts!  I take a break for one morning and look what happens?  Well, I will go back and read all of them, but I will add my own post first.
This afternoon we went to Waikiki, the most touristy beach known to man or beast.  We stayed for about an hour and that was quite enough for us.  I think I prefer the lesser known beaches that I have been privvy to thanks to my local friend.
I head back to the wintery winter tomorrow!  I can hardly believe it.  I have some pics of me at the beach that i will post when I get back to my home computer.
I'm not really a collector of stuff.  I have programs from shows I've seen...somewhere in my piles of various stuff in my parents house.  I do have two copies of the Elaine Stritch At Liberty program, which I consider one of the most amazing theatrical events I have yet seen in my young life.  One was meant for DR Jed, but it never quite found its way into his hands.  Oh well....
Back to reading posts...

OK - Time for be to be productive... Because if I am productive tonight, I can actually head back to Richmond... maybe as soon as tomorrow!  And I'll be able to sleep in my own, comfy, non-back-hurting bed again!  And for more than just a Monday night!  YIPPEE!

Now, if I come back here and find another 11 pages of posts...

WOWZA! ;)

-I promise, I'll stop with the "WOWZAs" soon enough.

I may be out of my ever lovin' mind, dearest bk, but that's not why I didn't know where to find the K.T. link. I skimmed previous pages when i came home and didn't even see this one except to "go down" and Post. So it wasn't your instruction for me to read K.T. that lead to the question of where the link was, but the previous mentions of it. Capisce?

I recently had something very good from the bakery but can’t remember for sure what it was.  It might have been brownies and lemon bars.  When I was in LA before Christmas I accompanied by brother to a party at the marina to watch the boat light parade.  The party was on a small yacht or large boat.  There were also fireworks.  I had a very nice time & the opportunity to meet some of my brother’s friends.

As for DR MattH's question, I, for one, am looking forward to Nationals.

I'm not agog or anything.

Sasha Cohen has been winning many competitions this year, but she recently unraveled when she had the entire competition in her pocket.  Michelle Kwan had done a very nice, but flawed skate and had gotten some of her worst-ever technical marks.

And she still won, because Sasha always finds a way to be worse than Michelle when everyone believes she's the finest technical skater in the world.  Well, Dick Button thinks so.

Isn't Dick Button "everyone"?

As for the men's competition, feh!

It will be Michael Weiss or Timothy Goebel.  Weiss will win if he can land a quad.

Goebel will win if Weiss falls on the quad.

Goebel can do five quads in a program, but his artistic flair is nearly non-existent.  His programs are a series of quads and triples linked by unimaginative footwork and next-to-no grace or style.

Weiss has style and if he doesn't fall apart, even if he falls on his quad, he could pull it off.

But so what?  The world title belongs to Plushenko who can do little wrong.

As for ice dancing and pairs, I don't have a blue clue who the skaters are any more.

I really stopped caring after Peter and Kitty Carruthers.

NONE of them ever did well enough to make me care how they fared....the U.S. is always 5th in the world or lower in both disciplines.

No!  Benny only used one "Well!"

And no other "Wells" were ever necessary!

He, of course, used body language.

I am now using body language to accompany my three "Wells."

My left leg is on my right knee and is very glad to be there.  My right wrist is on the wrist pad and my left hand is floating freestyle while I type.

I was right!

Geez, Laura II -- 2 years isn't that "long" a time...at least, not at my age.

For an 18-year-old, it's one-ninth of your whole lifetime, thus far.  Seems more significant, doesn't it!!!

It seems like only a few months ago to me.  Heck!  My vacation in Santa Fe was in July 2000 and it seems like it was last summer.
Title: Re:PINS AND NEEDLES

Yes, "lutz" is a fine word.

Mainly because it rhymes with "klutz" and so many skaters fall on the triple lutz that they become klutzes and the rest of their programs fall apart.

I'm fond of the Ena Bauer (sp????).  I'm sure MattH will let me know the correct spelling.  That's a very graceful move and few men have ever used it.

Rudy Galindo did it the year he won the Nationals.  That plus two triple-triple combinations.

I like the axel...the triple axel is a very hard jump.

I'm not fond of the flips and loops.  They're supposedly easy.  The best skaters always mess up and fall on the triple loop.  Michelle Kwan fell on the triple loop in the Olympics.  Dick Button said she can do that jump in her sleep.  I guess she was too awake or something.

I have a feeling that DR MattH and I might be chatting on the phone at some point during nationals....that is, if I don't get a tape-delay broadcast.

I hate those, but networks like to keep the West Coast in a primetime mode.  We get live sporting events "normally," but we always manage to get tape-delayed skating.

Michelle Kwan fell on the triple loop in the Olympics.  Dick Button said she can do that jump in her sleep.  I guess she was too awake or something.

Hahaha Ron! That made me laugh audibly--not something I usually do!

I remember my trip to Disney World in 2000 like it was a few, well, years ago. I wish my mother hadn't misplaced the scrapbook I made about our trip! Pictures stimulate my memory very easily.

I actually got three charts done.. well, more like two charts and one full piano-vocal arrangement.  The song repeated a lot, so I just had to a bunch of cutting and pasting.  Of course, the lyrics were different for each verse, so that took more time.  Then I had to futz - rhymes with "lutz" - with the spacing - I tend to get very picky.  And that took more time.  Then I decided to put some of the "ad lib" vocals in... and that took more time...

However, the arrangement looks smashing!  -If I do say so myself!  Now I just have two more songs to go, and those are just "outlines", so...  Maybe I'll do them now before heading to bed.. or work on them in the morning... we'll see what happens.

As for what I'm holding in the pic... It's a slice of a very decadent chocolate torte that was presented to me - and the rest in my group - at the end of "chocolate tour" I took when I was in Melbourne, AUS, this past summer.  It's kind of hard to see in the pic, but "drawn" in chocolate is a picture of the tower that is above the performing arts center - rather "centre".  Kind of Tour Eifel-ish.

-And, yes, the cake was delicious.  And, yes, I ate the whole thing.  Plus all the other chocolate on the tour.  Next time, I plan to take the "Chocolate and Other Desserts" tour.  And there's also one where you get pancakes!!!

Aww Jose, now you're making me feel guilty! :)

Well, if you're feeling guilty, you could always have some chocolate...

*I've been resisting the bag-o-chocolate that's about two feet from me - it was a present from my Secret Santa during Camelot.  Of course, I should have just given it away to someone.. or put it downstairs in the candy dish in the living room... but, no... Of course, that didn't stop me from opening that box of chocolates earlier this evening...

OK - I'm gonna go ahead and knock out one more chart before heading to bed...  Shouldn't take too long at all since it's three verses and a refrain - an easy copy and paste job...  I may even be back before the new notes go up...

Start the clock...

NOW!

-Or maybe not... we'll see..

Has anyone tried Scoops? They come in four flavors: York Peppermint Patty, Hershey milk chocolate, Almond Joy, and Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. They basically look like chocolate potato chips. Sooo yummy, especially the Reeses. All four boxes are currently sitting upstairs on my kitchen counter. I will NOT go get some to snack on. No no no. I have willpower...I think.

Thanks for the promotion of Melbourne tourism Jose. No doubt the State of Victoria will be posting you a suitable cheque. (I guess that is "check "for you or possibly Czech might be of more interest - a large Czech. I hope all the readers aren't rushing to Melbourne Florida.

I've never heard of Scoops.  They sound interesting.

I finally made a CD of the TV soundtrack album to Ruggles of Red Gap with Michael Redgrave, Peter Lawford, Imogene Coca, David Wayne and Jane Powell.  It was written by Jule Styne (Buddy Bregman's uncle!) and Leo Robin.  One of the tunes, "I'm In Pursuit of Happiness" was reused in Gypsy as "You'll Never Get Away From Me" (from what I understand, Sondheim was livid when he found out that one of the tunes was recycled).  I added Ethel and Jack's original Gypsy recording as a bonus track.  The album is a DRG reissue.  I don't know what year it was re-released.  I got the album on eBay and it was either new or near mint.  It sounds pretty good.

Thank you, Tomovoz! I try!

I am watching a movie and visiting websites at the same time. Multitasking is not a talent of mine!

I currently am listening to clips of Kidz Bop 4. Silly children...they're not pop singers, nor are all of these songs appropriate for kids. Oh, I heard something that I thought was funny today. There was a Kidz Bop 5 commercial on, and the kids were singing Hilary Duff's "So Yesterday." Now, I'm sorry, but I don't like Hilary Duff's singing voice at all, and I feel that she probably got her record deal solely because she had a TV show. I smirked when I discovered that the kids sounded better than she did on her own song.
