Title: MONKEYS REPEATING
Post by: bk on May 22, 2007, 12:07:02 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had writing in them, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're over with the monkeys, merrily repeating.

Good morning all.  It is 7:25 AM and Thelma and I are at the airport.  I see the plane trhough the window.

I keep having "moments"--this is the first trip I've taken with someone.  Wishing it was my Mom.  Thinking I'm only going to see her one last time....

I don't want to take this trip.  I want us (Mom and I) to go home.

I do have a new system, sort of. When I left my computer was to be tweaked. It has been acting "wonky" to quote the Brits and they thought that stripping it down (don't go there) and re-installing Windows and all the other programs might fix the problems. I don't want to jinx anything but it seems to have worked. Although I did spend most of yesterday personalizing my desktop and downloading the programs not officially sanctioned by IT, including RealPlayer. I couldn't live without RealPlayer because it allows me to listen to my BBC programs. I also put the Bears from down under back as my desktop photo and installed Tweak UI which allows me to do such mundane things as remove the arrows from shortcuts on my desktop (arrows are so unseemly).

Anyway, I have a bowl to wash and this is turning into a novel.

Love and hugs to you Danise!!!

Pictures later when Mr. Bakalor makes it possible.

Danise, my prayers go with you over the next few days.  This is one of the hardest things that a child has to do for a parent; but you have handled yourself with dignity and class.  When it is over, you can finally relax with the wonderful memories you have of your mother and her very rich life.

Semi -SPOILER

from last night's DANICNG WITH THE STARS

(That is correct.  I am about to post about a reality TV program.)

**********

First, let me say that I am a big fan of Apollo, because he is a local boy, but I think all three of the finalists brought their A-game to the Free-style dance.

However, I am outraged by the judges handling of the scoring of Laila's free-style dance.  Supposedly, there were no rules for this dance, the dancers could do anything that they wanted including jumps, lifts, etc.  And yet, they marked Laila down because she didn't do the kind of dance (slow and sensual) that THEY wanted her to do.  This wasn't their choice, it was hers.  If they wanted to see her do slow and sensual then why didn't they pick something other than the Rumba for the Judges Choice?

I don't know if the viewers put much weight in the judges scores, but I was so angry with the judges that I almost cast all my votes for Laila in protest.

Still......
GO APOLLO

TCB - I'm still wondering when and why they changed that music credit on the official  website for the composer of the FRIENDS AND FAMILY score, and if there was any logic behind it.  But the more times I can write on the internet that Skip Kennon (known then as Walter Edgar Kennon) wrote the music and lyrics for the song "You Can't Surprise Me" the more likely that info will come up on google on the very very small chance that anyone googles the song.

The BMI songwriter listing does properly credit Skip with the song, though. (And they of course  properly credit Kurt Hoffman with the cues from the movie.)

Good morning, TCB of the observant eyes.

Well, I think that is terrible the way they credited Hoffmann with "Original Music."  That is guilt by omission.  Obviously if you read thru the entire list of songs, you know that Mr. Hoffmann did not write Do-Re-Mi, but it gets into a little grayer area when you have a song like "You Can't Surprise Me" that is original in the film.  I hope Skip gets it worked out.

Good morning, all!  DR Danise, I wish you safe travel to Pittsburgh and smooth sailing through all travails of the next few days.

I'm working on the last two sections of the guidelines today and waiting for feedback on the drafts of the other sections.

Yesterday, I finally received an angry email from the Macbeths claiming that he had signed and returned the application for disbursement of funds from my dad's union pension. I don't think the lying Lady M ever mailed it, because the union pension office yesterday told me it hadn't arrived and I trust them more than I do the Macbeths.

I think I'm gonna head down to Chelsea first in a few minutes, and if we're not on the board there, then I'll walk the ten blocks up to Ripley-Grier.  I think.  Or I could just call the office too in a few.   That could work.

The following films would not be a teen rebel film in the traditional sense of the word but in many ways they are.

They often went against what was the norms of society at the particular time and what was expected.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Sixteen Candles
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Valley Girl  - i thought it was an interesting commentary on SoCal...  (A gal from the valley going out with the punk)

DR TCB re: DANCING WITH THE STARS.

It doesn't really matter how the judges vote.  They don't go by ranking, merely by % of totals. So laila got something like 55/60 whereas apolo got something like 58/60.  That means laila got 32.5% of the judges vote (55/169). And apolo got 34.3% (58/169). That's only like 2 points difference.

So really it only depends really who the public liked more.

Btw, i think joey got 56/169 (the 169 represents the total points given).

Btw2, I actually thought the judges were fair in complaining about laila.  It wasn't about the fact that she didn't do lifts (obviously with her size that wasn't really possible). It was more about the fact that she didn't really do anything outstanding (the way apolo's free dance was outstanding).

I'm curious to see who will win.

Another very pretty morning, but it's getting to 85 this afternoon, so that's not so pretty. The local weathermen keep saying we're in the midst of a drought and that we need rain. If it's so dry, why is my grass so green? Why isn't it brown so I wouldn't have to mow it?

Two quick DVR questions for you, DR Matt H.:

1]  If a show goes over the normally allotted time [either on purpose, or if it's an awards show like the Oscars, or a PBS pledge-a-thon, for example], does the DVR know to record longer?

2]  If you've selected to record a whole season of a show, does the DVR know to record "special" episodes, like the LOST recap from the other night, for example?

Thanks!  :)

Title: Re:MONKEYS REPEATING

Something I have noted about some of the teen movies, each decade is different. Each decade has a different spin due to the age of the teens at the time, what was happening in society at the time

For example in REBEL WITH A CAUSE, the struggle was between the young man and his desire to have a girl he could not have. Yet it still subtly aluded to the struggle between those who wanted freedom due to the growing prosperity after the second worldwar and the thrift. I have always seen that movie as a subtle nod to the struggles of equality and discrimination.

BLACKBOARD JUNGLE of the 1960s is another spin but is more violent in nature and reflects the anger of the young towards Vietnam and the American military's involvement.

Teen movies of the 1980s are in someways a throwback to the same struggles of authority and seeking their way but with a different spin. The 80s versions are more a reflection of the fads and pop culture of that time.

You see the subtle nods mostly in the Outsiders based on the SE Hinton novel. Excellent movie.

I have noted that each decade reflects aspects of the previous decades, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse.

Re:  HEROES

*****  SPOLIERS BE HERE   *****

I'm a bit disappointed with last night's season ender--too much with the noble posturing and lingering emotional stares.  The showdown that was built up between Peter and Sylar was barely more than a few good punches.  And why did Sylar let Hiro even get near him, let alone allow him to shove a sword through him?  And for all that, Skyar is still alive (Peter and Nathan are, too, I'm betting.)

The character that really took me by surprise was Nikki.  She rocked last night!  She quickly got herself and DL out of Linderman's office and away from the guards, came to realize her own strength in her battle with Candice and provided the one YEAH!! moment for me when she clubbed Sylar with the parking meter.  I wish every character had acted as directly in this episode.

From what I gather, the guides that are fed to the cable company update their information every few days, so, for example, my DVR knew to go two minutes over the hour last night to record HEROES. However, with award shows, I always tell it to record the show right after it as well since they are unpredictable. I always do that for the TOnys since they are usually good about finishing on time but occasionally will slip over for a couple of minutes.

The networks tell the cable companies how long their episodes are going to last (GREY'S ANTOMY being 75 minutes last week. I didn't record it since I was watching "live," but I saw in the guide that ABC had already furnished that information.)

As for your second question, I think that LOST show would have had to be recorded separately since it was a special and not part of the weekly series. I'm not sure about that, mind you, but I'm thinking on a different day, an odd start time, etc. meant it would have needed to be programmed separately.

DR Dan, Didn't Hiro strike Sylar from behind since he had his hands full repelling all the other heroes who were ganging up on him? He didn't let him get to him at first, but he became overwhelmed later and couldn't help it.

As for Peter/Nathan, that will take some fancy explaining, at least for Nathan to be alive.

When Hiro appeared, it was just Peter and Sylar on the square.  Sylar had already sent Matt's bullets back into him and Nikki was called back by Micah to attend to DL.  As it was presented in Issac's comic book, Hiro ran the sword directly into Sylar's chest.

I just found this clip on YouTube    (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Z9Cj-5c0O2o) that shows Hiro's attack.  I guess he did have the element of surprise, but you would think that Sylar would have been prepared for this having seen the comic.

TOD: Troubled Teens of the 1950s is my FAVORITE genre of film!! And of course most of Miss June Kenney's movies were of this genre.....So here goes...with illustrations (who wouldn't want to see one of these films after viewing the posters!!)

Sorry your Tivo let you down, DR George. And I had HEROES on the DVR but promptly erased it after I finished watching the show, so like with Vixmom the other night, I am so sorry I can't help you.

Actually, this final episode should be repeated on SciFi channel...I believe it's Friday night at 7 or 8.  If not Friday, check the schedule through Monday e'en, 'cause I've seen repeats on SciFit all through the season.

I've already cleaned the living room (did it when I got in from the dentist), so that chore is behind me for today. Hooray!

...or is that Monkey's Uncle repeating?
Technically speaking, The Monkey's Uncle was the repeat, following The Misadventures of Merlin Jones.

And does anyone out there know why these two films were set at MIDVALE College, while The Absent-Minded Professor (and it's remake, Flubber), Son of Flubber, and the three Dexter Riley films were all set at MEDFIELD College?  Wouldn't it have made more sense for Disney to have used the same goofus college throughout the films?

(Consider these to be my addition to our TOD pantheon!)

Thanks!  :)

I'll add to and repeat what DR Matt has already mentioned.

Tivo will record only during the time that the network has scheduled for a show.  Something like the Tony Awards (which more often than not does end on time) is scheduled for 8:00 to 11:00, that is all that Tivo will record even if the broadcast runs overtime.  However, there is an option when you set up the recording to add anywhere from a minute to three hours of additional recording time.  This worked out for me for something like THE AMAZING RACE, which because of CBS's erratic Sunday night schedule, often did not start on time, so I would add an hour and a half of additional time to record it fully.

As for the LOST recap, my Tivo did record it without my telling it to.  There is a feature called Season Pass which will record every episode of a given show.  The LOST recap was listed in Tivo's guide as a regular episode, so it recorded it for me.  You can also tell the Season Pass feature to record ALL episodes or just first run ones.  This is handy to filter out reruns.

The Season Pass will record episodes of a show no matter what network they are run on.  If I had let it, it would have recorded all of the HEROES episodes shown during the marathon on the Sci-Fi network this past weekend.

Hi all.  Believe it or not, we are already in the Pittsburgh airport.  Waiting for the Rental car because Thelma made the reservation for 12:00--we will pick it up at 11:30.

Nice flight.  No problems at all.  I will be catching the same plane back to Tampa on Friday.

I'll post again when we make it to the hotel.  First we go to lunch--Thelma knows someplace near the airport that she wants us to go to when we get the car.  Then we go to the funeral home.

I'm glad Thelma is driving.  I would have been so confused.  Pittsuburgh does have a very LARGE airport.  Top that off with I don't know if it's because I'm a bit stressed or the air or what but my contacts are fogging up and I can barely see.  I think they will settle down in a bit but I'm using my eye drops in the mean time.  Maybe a Clairitin would help as well.  We'll see.

We were picked up at the Fort Myers airport by friends who live on Sanibel (we were on Captiva, the next island over, for the week) and we went by Troy and Edgar's beautiful home before we got to Sandhurst.

I, too, was very pleased by a most-satisfying finale for "Heroes", the first season.

I really loved the way they used Hiro in this episode, and it was gratifying, in the final 10 minutes, to see him fulfill his destiny.

I loved the way Nikki came through and defeated Candace.

I thought the "Petrelli clan" scenes were fantastic, with all that chiaroscuro played out among the personalities and loyalties.  But the very best parts were Peter dreaming of Charles and getting his perpective on whether the future is fixed or not, Claire getting away (in perfect "invincible cheerleader" style) and Nathan's arriving in the nick-of-time to be with Peter and "save the world."  "Mrs. Petrelli" is going to be one even more miserable bwitch in the future.

I was totally stoked by HRG's response to Parkman's calling him Mr. Bennett:  "You can call me Noah".  YES!

Hiro's "escape" from crashing into one of the buildings was terrific, as was his landing.  Season 2 ought to be FUN.

I loved the little girl's telling Bennett and Parkman and Suresh that there is one person she cannot "find"...because everytime she thinks about him, he sees her.   Shudder!

I was only a little dismayed to discover that the presumed dead Sylar had somehow crawled over to a sewer access cover and escaped.   Did anyone notice the overhead shot of the blood?  On the left side, it seemed to take the form of a wolf.

Bring it on, NBC.  I want me some more "Heroes".

On the "American Idol" front:

I, for one, have zero interest in the "competitive" aspect of the remainder of the season (tonight and tomorrow night).

BUT....as if "Idol" actually NEEDED something to draw more viewers, it seems Paula Abdul is earning her paycheck by having broken her nose the day before the final competition.

Reportedly, she did this in order to prevent stepping on her dog.

The bubbling question I have is:  Will she have a swollen nose, a big old bandage on her face and will she be on painkillers for this final "judging" night?

THAT's my idea of a major calling card.

I need to vent for a second because I am still seething at being screwed over by one of the Amazon.com vendors.

I've been wanting to purchase the new Kurt Weill edition of THE FIREBRAND OF FLORENCE, a clothbound, 2-volume set selling for $600.00.  It's available to subscribers of the edition for $400. I honestly can't afford to pay $600 for the edition, but I can certainly pay $400 (unexpected royalty check from my publisher!). I found a used copy for $390+ on Amazon.com from a Rochester NY company called Musiclovers, and I contacted the seller on Friday, asking if it were inded the clothbound 2-volume set.  The vendor replied he thought so, claiming he would check on Monday. He did not, even though I sent another inquiry yesterday and phoned his store.

Today he sent me a note saying that it was hardcover, not clothbound(!!!), and it sold yesterday. I'm furious because the vendor's clearly irresponsible after knowing I was very interested and a moron when it comes to binding. I wanted that damned set!  So I called Amazon.com and complained about the ass.

...BLACKBOARD JUNGLE of the 1960s is another spin but is more violent in nature and reflects the anger of the young towards Vietnam and the American military's involvement....
Blackboard Jungle was released in 1955, about a decade before the rebellion against Vietnam took hold.  I agree with you entirely about its violence and anger, but I think it is more about the disenfranchisement the generation of the 50s felt towards the world around them.

West Side Story, released as a film in 1961, covered much of the same territory, adding racism and finger-snaps.

SPOILAGE -- "The Bachelor"

I totally HATE to admit this, but I watched the final hour of "The Bachelor" last night.

I had seen various bites of it through the season, and had formed an opinion of one of the ladies as the ONLY choice this man should make if he truly wants happiness.

Imagine my surprise when she was one of the final two.

Yes, I have to admit it:  Tessa was my choice for Andy, and I was absolutely CERTAIN he would miss the boat entirely and go with Bevan, the blonde.

Surprise!  Surpise!

Despite the overly/overtly maudlin and sappy presentation of the final proceedings....and the sadistically drawn out sobfest from Bevan during the proceedings, walking back to the limo, driving off in the limo, and then riding in limo, and riding in the limo and riding in the limo...on and on and on....I can only imagine ABC thought we would be sobbing, too.  I kept shouting at the TV..."Her 15 minutes are up, she was dumped, NOW LET'S GET ON WITH THE SHOW!"

FINALLY, it happened.  As much as I detest the fact that these folks are "performing" for us, there was something "right" about this choice and about how these two folks seem to feel about one another.

Only time will tell.  And by tomorrow, I'll have forgotten to check my watch.

but I don’t really see the difference between letting your family choose a wife for you  or letting the producers choose a select group of women to pick from.  Between the two I expect the family might do a better job of choosing.

Hi all.  Believe it or not, we are already in the Pittsburgh airport.  Waiting for the Rental car because Thelma made the reservation for 12:00--we will pick it up at 11:30.

Nice flight.  No problems at all.  I will be catching the same plane back to Tampa on Friday.

We'll see.

Great news you and Thelma have arrived.  The Pittsburgh airport may be large but the car rentals are conveniently located right at the airport.  I liked that.

Take care of your eyes & I’m glad Thelma, who knows her way around Pittsburgh, is driving.  I didn’t enjoy driving the narrow streets in a large van.  I also had trouble deciding if I should go through a light in the left lane or the right.  It was never the same, sometimes the left was for a left turn only but it wasn’t marked well.  If the right lane was for going straight it was difficult to tell because you stayed in the right lane until you went through the light and then had to maneuver to the left of the parked cars. ;D

Re: last night's HEROES

SPOILERS

I did enjoy last night's show. But i can understand why DR Dan was a bit disappointed in the sylar/peter fight.  They had led up to that showdown for much of the season. And perhaps there could have been much more of a give and take.

I will say that i loved the first ending (with nathan swooping in). I was not expecting that at all. That was a fairly good resolution to the problem.

I am wondering who is dead and who is not. I thought sylar was definitely dead. But the televisionwithoutpity boards are convinced he is alive (something about that drain).  I also thought peter was definitely alive but nathan was definitely dead (but i guess we shall see about the later). And it just seemed like matt was also dead.

One of the cutest things was molly and micah. Hope we get to see more of them together.

I didn't really like (or understand) the second ending that much (with hiro). I guess they wanted to begin the 2nd part. But it didn't really make me that anxious to find out what would happen.

I also (like DR RonP) loved the thing with simone's father and peter. I can't figure out if it was a dream or what (it would have made sense if he had timetravelled like hiro but since he was unconscious on the ground i guess not). Very interesting scenes. And loved how Mama petrelli fit into things.

I also loved claire jumping out of the window.

So overall good ending. Although like i said i will be curious to know who is not coming back.

Next week's Mark Burnett pirate show?

I will probably sample the two new shows. But for anyone who likes dancing I would recommend SYTYCD.  It is one of my absolute favorite reality shows. And i like it better than IDOL and DANCING WITH THE STARS.  Basically it has idol like auditions. With young dancers.  Then we get to see them perform. But my favorite part of the show is the pairs dancing. Each week the couples pull a name out of a hat and then pull a dance style out of a hat.  The results are amazing!

I know about watching UB on line, unfortunately, we have dial up at home and we can't watch streaming video on a 46-52K modem. I also can't save the show as a file and bring it to the home environment to watch because it's a flash streaming program. There is no option to save the program the way you can save certain music links. I tried through keepvid.com and the FLV converter but no luck. Oh, well. I'll just wait until it comes back in reruns.

Hi Jane, I'm good thanks for asking.

Actually for those who don't know, a lot of things have been in flux for the last several months and I finally feel like my life is getting back in order. Rodzinski just recently moved out although we broke up many moons ago. I'm happy to report that we remain very good friends but it has been a tough and at times painful transition for me. I'm now living with a very good friend and co-worker who recently ended her marriage and it's been nice having her shoulder to lean on.

I enjoyed last night's episode of HEROES and really liked the ending. Rodzinski came over to watch along with me and my roommate. We dined on a feast of pesto spaghetti, italian turkey sausage and then made short work of a pan of brownies.

Jennifer:  A case could be made for the survival of both Nathan and Peter.

Getting enough height, Nathan could release Peter and get away from the pending explosion.  Peter could explode, but then regenerate the way everyone figured he would anyway.

Re: The ending of one chapter and the beginning of another -- I LOVED it...here was Hiro fulfilling his destiny and then blinking his way out of slamming into a building.  We at last discover where he went.  We know he has "control" issues...so...here he performed a major heroic act in the kensei tradition, and then he blinks himself back nearly 500 years into the middle of a feudal conflict.  It could not have BEEN more perfect, IMO.

Parkman's fate is in the hands of the EMTs at this point.

Sylar apparently skulked into the sewer system.  All we saw was a blood trail where his body had been.

I'm more worried about D.L., although it seems he MAY survive.

This from Michael Shayne on May 13th:

I think the theater they used at least for the exterior shots was the Music Box as you can see the Helen Hayes across the street

If you can see the Helen Hayes Theatre then it isn't the Music Box. The Helen Hayes is on 44th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue and the Music Box is on 45th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue. If you saw the HH Theatre then the theatre was probably the Broadhurst. Depending on the angle it could have been the Shubert Theatre (not directly across from the Helen Hayes but kind of kittycorner) or the Majestic Theatre (ditto what I just said). Depending on when they filmed the sequence it could have been the Broadhurst because it was empty for a while between the time History Boys closed and Les Miz opened. I don't think they would have changed the marquee, even for a daytime shot, for either Phantom (Majestic Theatre) or Spamalot (Shubert Theatre). The theatre across from the Music Box (which currently houses Deuce) is the Gerald Schoenfeld (formerly the Plymouth Theatre). A Chorus Line is playing there. It's also kittycorner from the Booth Theatre where The Year of Magical Thinking is playing and kittycorner from the Bernard Jacobs Theatre (formerly the Royale) which now houses Frost/Nixon.

Obviously when you are a hero death can be overcome.  I go a lot on gut reactions (as to whether i think the people are really dead).

I would be completely and utterly shocked if hiro or peter died (because they are hugely popular).

I have not heard if matt, sylar or nathan are returning. I guess they could go either way.  It's funny but i really thought sylar was dead. I didn't even really notice that sewer.  When his eyes went white (like peter's did when he died the other time) i just assumed he was dead (although i couldn't for the life of me figure out why they would want to get rid of one of the better actors).

I think nathan could go either way. But they sort of implied that he sacrificed himself and would die.

Matt will probably live.

And i too was hoping DL would be the one to go. Although i suppose he could get more interesting.

RE: where Hiro ended up some people said they saw Hiro's father there. So perhaps this "generations" thing will give us insight into the heroes and their ancestors.

Actually, this final episode should be repeated on SciFi channel...I believe it's Friday night at 7 or 8.  If not Friday, check the schedule through Monday e'en, 'cause I've seen repeats on SciFi all through the season.

Thanks, DR Ron, for some intriguing speculations on potential scenarios about those who could still be living on HEROES. I hadn't thought of it, but it seems perfectly reasonable, and I'd have no trouble accepting it if it came to pass.

Sylar is a wonderful villain, but to have him survive that would be stretching it. The writers should be talented enough to come up with another equally interesting villain.

And I, too, LOVED the beginning of Chapter II.
Title: Re:MONKEYS REPEATING
Post by: George on May 22, 2007, 01:24:42 PM

I don't have TIVO, I have a DVR from Comcast.  It did automatically record the special "Lost" episode.  I can set it to record every episode of a series on a channel or just the new episodes, or all the episodes at a particular time.  It seems to be quite flexible.  But if I set it to record every episode of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" on ABC Family, it won't record the BBC America episodes.

Next, I watched last night's LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT. Two interesting cases, one involving a neighbor of Logan's who winds up dead on the pavement. The other involved  a con woman who killed a police recruit. Both stories were very interesting.

And, yes, I had a wonderful time at Splash last night.  Everyone seemed to be there - well, at least everyone I've worked with over the past two or three years.

Alas, due to another one of those "earlier incidents" somewhere in Brooklyn, the A train was running - or not running - normally last night by the time I left the bar.  I stepped into the train station at 1:05am, and a train did not come along until 1:25.  And then because of track work,  I didn't get home until 2:00am... And then I had to be up at 8:00am, so...

I see that Amazon.com is listing the DVD of season 1 of "Heroes" for an August 28th release date.

What I need to know before ordering it is whether it's anamorphic or not.  I take nothing for granted.  I don't want any 1:78:1 show on DVD that doesn't fill my screen.

Next came PIGSKIN PARADE. I had never seen this movie all the way though, and it was a bubbly little musical. The football stuff was dull (and predictable), but otherwise a nice early Fox musical. Garland's voice really is astonishing, and she must have had people in the audience looking at one another when this BIG voice comes out of this little person.

Can't believe Stuart Erwin got an Oscar nomination for such a nothing performance.

There are some featurettes on the PIGSKIN PARADE DVD, and I started with one called "The Talent in PIGSKIN PARADE." The film does have a starry cast (though they weren't big stars at the time). So, the featurette gives some information on each one of them: Garland, Grable, Tony Martin, Patsy Kelly, Jack Haley, and Stu Erwin.

I didn't quite get finished with it, so will watch the rest of it when I go back down.

DR singdaw - As other have already mentioned, your DVR unit should record "special episodes", as well as longer - or shorter - episodes.

We always double-check the "List" to make sure the programming changes made it to our cable provider.  They usually do, but there have been one or two times where we've had to manually adjust the recording time.

And even though the season is almost over, we have noticed that "Idol" tends to run over by a minute even though it's still scheduled to end on time.  -We've lost a bunch of final comments and performances.  -However, you can set your DVR to start and stop recording one minute before and one minute after the scheduled time slot.

Now...  If you happen to get to the point where you have overlapping programming and have to make a decision as to which program you wish not to record, well... May those times come few and far between.  *We usually run into this problem on Wednesday nights; thankfully, programs on Bravo are usually repeated later that evening, so you can adjust things accordingly.

As for the upcoming slate of new and returning "Reality Shows":

That Pirate show - I'm sorry, but it looks stupid to me.  Stupid may be a strong word, but the promos are just too hokey for their own good.

"So You Think You Can Dance?" - YES!  *And since I happened to be privy to one of the New York City audition days.... ;D  -I won't be on camera, but I'm really hoping some of my "favorites" get some air time.

"Project Runway" - YES!  -And, in another bit of serendipity, a friend of mine is now working with the company that's handling the publicity and public relations for the show.  It's going to be another interesting season.

"Top Chef" - Yes.  -Not the upper and lower case letters in the "Yes". ;)

As for the Topic of the Day...

I guess I'll mention "Ordinary People" too.  It's one of my favorite movies.  However, I see it more as a "troubled family" movie, rather than a "troubled teen" movie.  I first saw it back in high school in Social Studies class, and it was a fascinating movie to discuss with other high-schoolers/teens.

"The Breakfast Club" - One of the few movies I've seen more than once in a movie theatre.  Of course, that may have had more to do with Emilio Estevez playing a gymnast than anything else. ;)

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" - I actually did not see this movie until a few years after it was released.  I had just heard so much about "Bueller! Bueller!" that I was put off by all the hype.  However, after catching it on HBO one day...  -Just what is Alan Ruck up to nowadays anyway?  *And I remember seeing Biloxi Blues on Broadway with both Mssrs. Broderick and Ruck.

Here's some EXCITING NEWS!

Season 2 of   "Dynasty" (http://www.amazon.com/Dynasty-Second-Season/dp/B000QUEQ68/ref=sr_1_2/002-5398712-7099235?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1179870669&sr=8-2) is coming out August 14th.

It seems Fox relinquished its rights to release DVDs of the show when the first season didn't sell well (just like the first season of "Dynasty' didn't exactly top the Nielsens).  Paramount has come to the rescue, and season two is the one where Alexis joins the cast and creates all the sparks that made this show a joy to watch.

Back from a nice lunch and a little trading session at Amoeba.  Then I went to the mail place to pick up my DVD of Can Can, only it wasn't there.  So, I had to call amazon a few minutes ago - three times in a row I was put through to India and I refused to talk to those people.  Then I finally got someone in the US - if I were amazon, I would simply stop doing business with UPS because this business of amazon setting a pickup then having UPS not pick it up or lose it is reprehensible.  The tracking info says "carrier notified to pick up package" even though I received a notice that it had shipped yesterday for today delivery.  So, they now have to credit me the overnight charge of 3.99 and ship out another overnight copy to get here tomorrow.  I was all set to watch that this evening - instead, I'll have to switch gears and get in the mood for something else.

Anyway, it seems that a random glance at imdb suggests that the person who does the full underscore for a film, even when other people wrote the songs, can be entitled to the "original music by" credit, at least on imdb.  We're at least going to try to get the info that Skip wrote the song on the imdb by submitting it as an update.

As to the movie's website, we'll figure out what to do after Skip's agent no longer has her mind involved with HERRINGBONE at Williamstown.

I keep meaning to mention something about how music is credited in movies, but I'm still a bit nap-deprived to say anything coherent.  In any case...

"Original Songs" usually fall under the "Music From..." category, rather than the "Soundtrack of..." one.

I guess I'm thinking of that David Friedman song that appears over the credits of the "Trick".  That's definitely a "Song from..." rather than part of the "Soundtrack of..."

Or something like that.  ???

I guess as long as no one else is claiming credit for the song Skip/Waler wrote, well, then that's a good start.

Der Brucer - He's writing music on a new project to lyrics by a nice Jewish lady named Ellen Schwartz, and he wrote music a year ago to a musical with lyrics by Eduardo Machado (I don't think Eduardo is Jewish), but for the most part especially in recent years, Skip's been writing his own lyrics.

Well... I don't see any of the songs listed, and I'm guessing there were some "popular" songs used here and there in the back- and/or foreground.

-I'm sorry, I haven't seen the movie...  But as long as the proper credits are listed in the actual movie credits, well, that's all that contractually required (in most cases).

Once you click on MUSIC:  All the songs are listed with the performer, and on occasion the composer.  That's what TCB was pointing out to me.  That the discussion on the Score right under those songs implies something I'm sure they didn't intend.
Title: Re:MONKEYS REPEATING
Post by: FJL on May 22, 2007, 04:24:04 PM
The credits in the film itself are perfectly fine and not even remotely problematic.  The credits on the site don't match the film, the DVD box or the DVD.

Jose, i'm confused.  Did you click on MUSIC (on teh left bar) after going to the site?

Oh, now I just did.  -I had just clicked on "Credits" before.

Well... Even on the Music page, they lists "artists" for the pre-existing music, not composers - except for Verdi.

I guess if you can get them to update the site for Skip, then maybe you could also get Jones & Schmidt and company credit for their contributions too.  -And I'm serious about that.  And I'm sure their publishers would appreciate the mention too.  Not to mention ASCAP and BMI...

The judges said nothing about her not doing anything outstanding or about lifts.  All three of them complained because she didn't do something slow and sexy, which they all thought was her strong suit.  If that is what they wanted to see her do, then they should have chosen that for the judges dance, instead of the pasa double, which is neither slow or sexy.

I do realize how the voting is scored, but what I tried to say was that I was afraid that their criticizm and their votes might influence how the viewers reacted to what I thought was a damn hot number.

Would would hope that if someone were to contact Kurt Hoffman regarding the song that Skip wrote, that he would put them in contact with Skip.

*And, if it's any comfort, most of the "up and comers" I work with, always scour the credits for who "who wrote that".  Then they find a way to contact them and get the music.

BLACKBOARD JUNGLE was released the same year as REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE - 1955.

*****  HEORES SPOILERS  *****

When Hiro appeared, it was just Peter and Sylar on the square.  Sylar had already sent Matt's bullets back into him and Nikki was called back by Micah to attend to DL.  As it was presented in Issac's comic book, Hiro ran the sword directly into Sylar's chest.

I just found this clip on YouTube    (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Z9Cj-5c0O2o) that shows Hiro's attack.  I guess he did have the element of surprise, but you would think that Sylar would have been prepared for this having seen the comic.

But Sylar very egotictacially laughed off the possibility of Hiro getting close enough to run him through with the sword.  Ego was his weakness.

SPOILER

Did anyone else notice the emblem on the Japanese warlord's banner.  I guess it was the same symbol that pulls all of the heroes together.... i.e. Nicki's tatoo.

I'd do an "American Idol" page dance, but since it's a singing competition and not a dancing competition, I don't think it would be appropriate.

Good evening and thank you all for the vibes.  Thelma got a kick out of the "Thelma and Danise on the road--oh my!"  :)

It has been a very long and tiring day.  Seeing my Dad's and Joey's grave for the first time.  For that matter seeing my own grave.  That's quite an experence.  It gives one pause to think one is standing on the place one will spend all time at.

It is a lovely place up on the side of a hill.

Everything is in place for Mom.  The service shall be at 10:00 AM Thursday.  If other family shows up so be it.  If they don't, so be it.   I gave them the day (tomorrow) to see the notice in the paper.  I've done all I can do.

I guess I am bugged by the American Idol hosts and judges who give off the smug vibe that without them - individually - the show would not exist, when actually they could all be replaced with little damage to the thrust of the show.

Yes, I am watching the finale....I always watch the last couple of shows.  I am not sure who I am rooting for....I won't be voting this year, but in an hour, I may change my mind.

Good luck to Jordin and Blake.

So glad that DANCE moved its show back an hour!!

However, according to the Extra Features on the DVD of FRIENDS AND FAMILY, the song "You Can't Surprise Me" was almost used over the closing credits with two male dancers ballroom dancing to the song.

Why would a singer have her nose pierced?

..... it would seem that there would be a danger of creating a "harmonic hole" that could produce an eerie wheezing sound.... rather like a badly played "Tonette."

Well, if it's anything like last year's finale, we'll hear from some of the  more "memorable" wanna-be's.  And, yes, I think we'll be hearing from Sanjaya too.

So, what do they do tomorrow night for an hour before announcing the winner?

No, no...you don't get the winner after one hour.  You get the winner after about 1 hour and 55 minutes.

I'm certain there'll be special performances by tons of people.

All the top 12 contestant also-rans will participate.

There will most likely be much FURTHER ado made over the self-serving "Idol Gives Back" event and tons of backpatting over how much money was collected, etc., etc.

Is it's interesting to see how she "transforms" over the course of the hour.  By the end of the hour, it looked like her eyes had all sense of focus.  So...

Record it, then fast forward through it at your leisure.

True, it is a little harder to trip over him.  I know people think he is big, but just today Keith & I were saying he isn’t.  Big is a Newfie or a Mastif.

When I’m in bed Sherlock has this habit of flopping over my legs & almost falling over the edge.  Normally I would just let a dog fall, but we can’t risk him landing on his front legs.  So I have to get my outside leg up really fast & hold him until Keith can run around to my side of the bed & push Sherlock back up.  Last night this activity really bothered my back that was also sore from our first day back to training classes.  When that dogs wants to pull me it takes all my strength & some to hold him.

On another front, I'm happy to tell only you loyal hainsies/kimlets that Bruce Vilanch will be joining our fundraiser this November.  Of course, I get nervous when we're booking this far, because anything can come up that could cause him to cancel, but as of now he's put it on his calendar - and I have already chosen his song - No Time At All from Pippin.

It is a very lovely evening. It didn't reach 100F today, so tonight it is very cool at only 81F at 8:15 p.m.

We have all the windows open tonight. We figure it will be our last chance to get fresh air in the house before the AC goes on for good for the next five months.

I think I will plan on getting up early and going birding tomorrow. It should stay nice for a few hours before getting too warm.

Sad to say, no closure was offered in the show, and we were left with quite a troubling cliffhanger that will never be resolved. Ah well.

It was a marvelous series.

Finished the evening with another top-notch episode of THE SHIELD with lots of scary, heavy drama happening and only two shows left in the season.

Anyway, it seems that a random glance at imdb suggests that the person who does the full underscore for a film, even when other people wrote the songs, can be entitled to the "original music by" credit, at least on imdb.

That has been the case on the films I've worked on...

This may have been discussed before, but...  Any thoughts on these two new-ish boxed set:

OH, for the TOD I forgot all about the 1960 Mexican teen angst movie Quinceañera!

I wonder if the film of the same name that came out last year is a remake?

I know I've posted this elsewhere, but now it's official:  HAPPY SHAVUOS, EVERYBODY!

From THE BOYS IN THE BAND:

"Michael: Let's do this again real soon.

Harold: Yeah, how about a year from Shavuos?"

Yes, the keys will be lowered for at least four of my songs in that reading, so that's good.  I've finished Prince Of The City, and shall now watch the little making of documentary, then I'll begin to enter fixes.

On Shavuos, we read the Book of Ruth, which of course relates the sacrifices made by Riuth's mother-in-law Naomi.

They are simply repackagings of discs already released. In the case of two disc sets (like ST. LOUIS and MY FAIR LADY), they put the first disc from the special editions in the set.

Still laugh the year I was in DC  for a 4-H conference and we were playing volleyball in shorts and t-shirts and those from AZ, SoCal and the Gulf coast were in parkas....

I am fading fast.  Tomorrow I do my first immigration law presentation. It's a brown bag at our office we do once a month and we never get very many people so it's a perfect first time out in a new subject area type of thing.  I finished my materials today  - well I finished them twice. I had just completed editing and adding to them when I was interrupted by a call, checked something on the computer for the caller then closed...and didn't save and.....I think the second revision is better...

One more thing before I go...I don't think I said this already...looks like the negotiations are complete with the executor of the estate on the furniture.  Today we added a great copier - much better than the ones I was looking at - file cabinets and a secretary's desk with hutch.  I think we reached a very reasonable deal for both parties and I am most pleased.  I'm ALMOST done buying furniture...whew!!!
