Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both same and old, and now it is time for you to post until the same old same old cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ESPERANCE!
-
Topic of the Day...
In my DVD player: the the uncut & uncensored seasons 1 & 2 of the original British series "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and the uncensored season 1, vol. 1 of the American series "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"
-
In my CD player: a whole bunch of CDs that I have at work...will report back later.
-
On my DVR: a whole bunch of things that I need to tape onto VHS tapes so that I can take it back because it screwed up the recording of FOUR shows! :P
-
And on that note (E-flat), I'm off to bed. :)
-
Last night Tom (of Oz) said:
The first copies of the HHW Birthdates Cd have been finished and shall be posted on Monday.
DRs who wish to have a copy and for whom I do not have a mailing address, please PM me here.
So far I have six definite requests!
If I'm not already part of those six, then add me to the list, please.
-
We will be on Long Island for the long weekend. I leave work at 11:30 for a 12:15 train. I will return on Monday. Anthony has work to do on LI so he will return on Wednesday.
Nothing in Nothing.
-
Since I'm here by myself I will post some pictures to move us along.
We stayed in the "nursery" for a few days when we arrived and this is one of the images painted on the walls.
-
Most of the time we ate in (the place was teeming with foodies who wanted to cook) but we did go out one night to a place called The Bubble Room, a kitschy place full of retro memoribilia and very large portions of food. This photo opportunity presented itself as we walked in the door.
-
This is the tray of desserts presented after a meal large enough to feed the Russian army. I had the chocolate cake if you're wondering.
-
On one of our sojourns we had breakfast at a place serving "the world's best breakfast" (that's what the sign said, I couldn't argue)
-
And here is a picture of the restaurant's namesake, just a few blocks away
-
Since I won't be around much this weekend (being on Long Island and all) I'll post a couple more pictures.
This was taken after lunch at the Lighthouse Cafe. Our friend is a "geocacher" Some of you may know what that is but if you don't, go here for an explanation.
Geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com/)
He owns the cache we were holding in the photo. He wanted to show us where it was hidden.
-
One more and then I'll stop. I don't want to fill up the uploader.
It's another picture of food and friends. It seems like all we did was eat and sleep (kinda like babies)
-
I've taken us to 15. It's up to you all to move us forward!
-
Great photos, DR BEN!!
Sleep and eat? That's what a REAL vacation is all about.
-
Hmmmm working the next two days.
After looking at all 12 of my lines, I decided I didn't want to drive 70 miles a day for five weeks doing MIDSUMMER. There ARE small parts. I haven't seen the cast list, but I do know that the man she ORIGINALLY offered the part to certainly is a BETTER actor than the part would indicate.
My problem with this director - who is an instructor at the local university - is that she has cast mostly University people in play. She has set it - in her words - in a indefinite time. The royals are "University people", the mechanicals are "the locals", and the fairies are "children." I don't like town and gown competitions to begin with....anyway....I hope she has a good show.

Good morning. I'm feeling much less crabby after a good night's sleep. But i must head to Brooklyn this morning, whichj may make me crabby all over again.

Crabby Appleton, the meanest man in the world!

I'm rotten to the core
I do a bad deed every day,

I can't stand fun for anyone,

My car is in the shop today for scheduled maintenance. I took Metro-North [and a shuttle bus] to work. Probably just as well, as I'm sure this afternoon's traffic on the major arteries will be hellish.

From yesterday's NY Post:
May 24, 2007 -- Gentleman, start your livers.
A panel of expert imbibers yesterday chose the city's best cocktail - a concoction with a down-home name and Catskills inspiration known as "The Porch Swing."
The mixture of Hendrick's gin, Pimm's and homemade lemonade was created by Jay Doran, beverage director of Blue Smoke, the Danny Meyer-owned barbecue restaurant on East 27th Street.

Good morning, all! I just had another email from Kay Swift's granddaughter who can't seem to let go of the fact that she condemned me without a trial three years ago, held it against me, and is now concerned that I'm pissed!
So, today I'm back to Toyland and more depressing matters. Hopefully I can get some work in on LIFE BEGINS AT 8:40 and cheer up.
DR FJL, I deliberately stayed out of the UGLY BETTY fracas last evening because I was already in a bad mood. I love the show, but I also found the season finale deliberately cruel and mean to everyone to provide lots of cliffhangers for next season. Justin's making his rival sick could have indeed killed him, and I suspect if he were an adult character the writers might have considered it, but putting him in prison would have removed a character the viewers like. That's not to say next season that there may be trouble for his doing it. What I like about the character is his family's acceptance of who he is, and the great thing about his (late?) father's acceptance was the change from being upset over a sissy for a son to his buying him opening night flowers.
I do think Marc's character teeters constantly on stereotype, but I gotta tell you I saw Ron Raines as Danilo in 1991 at Theatre Under the Stars in Houston in THE MERRY WIDOW. In the Widow's entrance number, when all the chorus men rush on to outrageous statements of love for her, my initial reaction was "Isn't there at least one straight man in this chorus?" They all made Marc in UGLY BETTY look straight.

Good morning all.
What an emotional roller coaster day yesterday was!
I could never have predicted yesterday’s events in my wildest dreams. I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so upset about seeing Mom for the last time and I worried that no one else would show up and I worried that someone would show up and on and on and on.
As it turned out, several people showed up and before I knew it, there were hugs and kisses and I have a family again!
The service for Mom was very nice and I was very happy with how she looked (so peaceful and pain free). We followed her to the gravesite and watched her buried which was very emotional for me, then I put the roses I bought on the grave and then walked down to Joeys and left his flowers as well.
Thelma really wanted to go to her family so we went back the hotel along with one of my nieces so she could pack the car and head on to them. I spent the rest of the day with the family, my niece, Debbie, drove me all around Pittsburgh showing me all the old places I remembered.
Then we all went out to dinner and I met more of the family. We exchanged phone numbers, addresses and email addresses and will stay in touch from now on. :)
By the time I got back the hotel last night I was totally worn out from all the emotions I was experiencing . It was a bit much to absorb all in one day. They wanted me to stay at least one more day but when I called I was told because it is the holiday weekend, there was no way I could get my ticket changed. If I could get a flight, the cost would have gone up a couple hundred dollars.
Still, I am so grateful for the day I had. It was more then I could have hoped for.
I’ll catch a cab to the airport since Thelma went on to her family and I should be home tonight but it will be late. My flight leaves at six and I arrive at approx eight thirty. By the time I get the SuperShuttle out to Thelma’s house to pick up Bonnie (my suv for those who don’t know who she is) and drive home it could be ten or eleven (and with SuperShuttle it could be dawn!) before my key hits the lock.
I can’t wait to see the dogs but I’m also sad that I didn’t arrange a few more days here. I guess that’s to be expected but since I didn’t know what I was facing, I think I did a pretty good job of it. Thank God I decided to let that obituary run in the paper for one day before holding the funeral.
It gave people time to take the day off from work and it was how most of them found out about it.
It’s a whole new world that dawned today. I think it’s going to be alright. :) ;)
-
Thank you all for the vibes and hugs and good thoughts sent my way. I know they made a difference.
-
I don't think I'll be playing FINE & DANDY till I get over my current feelings. It's interesting all of this happened yesterday since I was playing the recording yesterday morning before the battle commenced. Kay Swift was a beautiful lady and I was quite fond of her.
DR edisaurus, I had mentioned that Edward Woodward was in HOT FUZZ because the supporting cast is so good. It's also fitting that the leading man of THE WICKER MAN be in the film since Simon Pegg's repressed cop seems to be channeling Woodward's Sergeant Howie.
-
Hooray for Danise!!!
As I saw you on-line I thought about yesterday (knowing that it was the funeral). I'm glad things have worked out. It's very nice to have made connnections again.
You summed it all up at the end of your post. It will be alright.

DR Danise, this is really wonderful news. You can always go back now and visit family in Pittsburgh when you don't come to visit your family in New York. Safe travel today. When you get home, if it isn't too late, post a note that you've arrived safely.

I don't blame you a bit, DR JRand. And with gas prices as they are now, it's prohibitive for me to even consider doing shows that are away from Charlotte. My favorite theater recently has been one that's 26 miles away, but I wouldn't consider auditioning there now.

DR FJL i just read your comments about UGLY BETTY. I agree with some of the things you said. But i disagree about marc. I love marc. I think he is hilarious. Sometimes he is mean. But so is his little friend ( i can't think of her name right now, the receptionist who is his best friend).
What i do agree with you on is that justin (little boy) went overboard with getting the lead in the musical. First of all he is so talented, i seriously doubt the boy who they cast was better. But i didn't like how flippant he was about giving the other boy nuts. I believe that the writers tried to make it seem not so bad by saying that justin merely offered to swap and the other boy really wanted to do it. The other boy should have asked what was in the food (any kid with a nut allergy would not merely eat someone else's food.
But i was not happy that that was how justin got his part. So i get why you didn't like it either.

Did you enjoy the "bubble bread" at the Bubble Room? And did anyone have the Red Velvet Cake for dessert? *Come the Fourth of July, they make a Red, White and Blue Velvet Cake - they color one of the cake layers Blue.
And, yes, those portions are gigantic. And I seem to remember the menu offering a "dinner special" where you just have an appetizer and dessert. Which is still more than enough food.

RE: last night's SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.
I love this show. But the audition phase is my least favorite. My favorite part is once the voting starts (the pairs dancing, not so crazy about them dancing alone). But i also love watching the training (when everyone goes to vegas and they train them). I love this part.
SPOILER FROM LAST NIGHT'S SHOW.

There are a few people i like. But was anybody else annoyed that they let that great breakdancer guy go. They put his friend through (who i did not like). To me if they wanted to dump the first guy, then they should have showed us that he was completely incapable of learning choreography. Cause without showing that all they did was really annoy me.

Just checking in one last time before I have to leave the room. The cab will pick me up about 1:45--my family (isn't at a GREAT word?) couldn't take me because they had to work. I understand that. They didn't know I was coming or that any of this was going to happen so they couldn't make last minute arrangements. If I had stayed until tomorrow, they could have taken me but I didn't know what was going to happen either...
Life does go on and now days most people do have to work. I totally understand that. Next time I will make better plans.
Thank you all again. I don't know that came though this with any grace--It just feels like I just came though it the best I could. These past few weeks seem unreal to me--A nightmare/dream with a silver lining.
Thank goodness for the long holiday weekend. I plan on doing nothing tomorrow but sleep then be with the dogs. Sunday, I will take them to the dog park. Poor babies they don't know what is going on. Now maybe we can settle down into our new life and it will be better for them as well.
I know they will be scared when I leave for work on Tuesday because they will think I am going to leave them for days again. It's something they will have to get used to.
I am very, very, very glad I got that doggie door installed when I did. It is a life saver for them and for me.
-
And as for "Idol" - Since we're not talking about "Lost" today (so far)... ;)
So, will there be a Beatles' round next season? Or did they use up their song quotient the other night? Or will their rights be revoked after that hastily thrown together "tribute" to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"?

I shared some of them with the family.

Actually, they might work it put better than you think. They now know from experience that if you are gone for days at a time, you do come back and still love them. Your only going away for a day will seem a nice treat. If you don't already have one, devise an "I'm Home and I Missed You" ritual involving hugs and treats. Our tribe have helped develop their own - each has their particular part to play - even Bonnie who does not get in the dog-biscuit line-up, but patiently waits sitting on the back of the couch, for her treat to be delivered (she is a Princess, after all!).

Lunchtime here. I have that itchy "I'm-gonna-be-off-for-a-few-days" feeling that I always get before a vacation or extended weekend. Could be a long afternoon.
I'm so glad DR Danise will have a few days to regroup before having to go back to work.

Is there anyone here who's watching On the Lot who can tell me who that elderly bald character actor in the homeless man/peanut butter allergy short film was? He's evidently going to be in other segments, since I saw him in the tease last night for Monday's show (is this show ever going to have a regular night)? The guy looks incredibly familiar--I know I've seen him in a film or tv show, and it's driving me slightly batty (a short, somewhat scenic drive).

I have several signed Rozsa items, including the LP of Providence, one of my favorite Rozsa scores - Tony Thomas used to get them signed for me. I was supposed to go meet Rozsa, who, at that time was bed-ridden, but then he died.
I also have a signed Friedhofer CD or LP (can't remember which), as well as other. I'd have to go through all my Varese CDs to find them, but I used to like having signed things like that.

Joan will be ten minutes late (what else is new), but that's good since I'm STILL groggy. And STILL here.

When I was little, we had a school field trip to Indiana University Northwest in Gary, and there was a touring show of The Magic Show, only it was some kind of stripped down affair for kids called "Magic To Do." It had magic and some of the same songs. I wonder what the deal was with it, whether it was a sanctioned thing or what.
-
I am sick. Made it through winter with no sickness, then I got hit as the weather got nice. It reminds me of being sick in spring as a kid and being stuck in bed while hearing other kids playing outside.

Providence is also one of my favourite Rozsa scores. BK were you at Rozsa's memorial service at the Bel-Air hotel? It was perhaps my best day ever in Hollywood.

I did finish a great bio of Darryl F. Zanuck by Mel Gussow.

And I watched one excellent movie this week, a John Wayne film called ISLAND IN THE SKY, I think. Man what a great movie. Wayne and some guys crash land their plane way up in the north and a bunch of his buddies come trying to rescue him. Lots of great acting. Wayne near tears at several points. Lloyd Nolan, always a master, Andy Devine great in a serious role, Alfalfa funny in a small role, this was a real classic with a powerful ending.
-
The song "Magic to Do" was from PIPPIN, I know. But the show I saw resembled THE MAGIC SHOW in form.
We would get some weird hybrid shows in NW Indiana that we were taken to see as field trips that we paid for, especially once they finished the Holiday Star Theater which was a major venue in the area. I remember a show that was like a mixture of YOU'RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN and SNOOPY. And a musical WIZARD OF OZ.

TiVo users 'Idol's' big loser (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-idol25may25,0,2803305.story?coll=la-home-entertainment)
On Wednesday, some of those same DVR users were cut off from the "Idol" finale's denouement, when Jordin Sparks was crowned over Blake Lewis. The live broadcast ran until 10:09 p.m., and Sparks' win was left until the dwindling minutes of the program, which DVR users would have missed unless they were technologically savvy enough to program their recorders to add in that cushion of time.
As one aced-out viewer griped in a message board on the fan site http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com : "I was smart enough to program my DVR to go over by 5 minutes, but not smart enough to go for 10 minutes."
On Thursday afternoon, Fox issued a statement apologizing to viewers who missed the end of "Idol." "We're sorry that DVR users may have missed the conclusion," it read in part. "It was always our intention to bring the show in on time, but just as with any live sports, variety, awards or entertainment event, there is no way to absolutely guarantee that the show will end exactly on the hour. Fox and the producers apologize to those viewers who were inconvenienced."
To which I might say BULLSHIT (A Penn & Teller Reference)
Idol producers have positive real time control over their show - if they wanted it to end on time, it would end on time!

Yeah, IN HARM'S WAY is a cheesefest and it seems like it is always on. I don't normally seek out Wayne films, but I was intrigued by the rest of the cast, and then the premise and presentation of the film were so unique. There were great moments like this guy getting lost and delirious in the snow and he flashes back to a day at the carnival with his wife. Sublime stuff.

My computer took it. Unfortunately, the Mac uses a wide aspect ratio in its little camera so the HHW page stretches it into a vertical file to fit the format.
This apparently inspired Elmore's first words upon meeting me: "I thought you'd be SCRAWNY!" (Gee...thanks! As If I'm already not sensitive enough about my weight!)
But I still love you anyway, Elmore, and there's even MORE of me to love you than you thought!

I found this because the newspaper is mentioning me in an article on Sunday and asked for a photo.

I didn't, but I guess I'd rather be known as a "standard gal" than a "horizontal gal"!

No butt viewing today. He decided not to do the trees until Tuesday. So, since I was sitting here waiting, I called the office and decided to take both Friday and Tuesday off. It's already been great.
I was supposed to leave at 3:00 to go to the lake and see my family. Looks like I'll be a little late, lol, especially since I haven't packed yet. I just have to figure out what to wear to a bridal shower in the morning, the rest is easy.
Jhvw has moved in with my brother's family for the summer. This will be interesting. Anyway, he's only 2 hours away from me now, so I'm sure I'll be seeing more of him. He's going to help me with a computer network at my office and thinks he can secure the incoming wireless so I don't have to pay for high speed internet. Cool beans. Anyway, I'll see him in a couple hours.
He's going to take it easy this summer - the most time he's had off at one time since he was 16 years old is 9 days in a row. So, it's time for him to have a summer to mess around and see what he wants to be. He's going to do things for my brother and my parents. He'll drive mom and dad to Joplin when his niece is born so they can meet the great grand daughter. But he's basically taking the summer off then will go back to school full time in the fall and finish college.

I was late getting back from lunch, so I only had time for a couple of items on the viewing menu.
I began with the Joan Crawford-John Wayne film REUNION IN FRANCE. Wayne gets second billing, but he's really a supporting player in the film. He looked wonderful, still a young man and not yet with the leathered features he was soon to acquire. He plays a Yank in the RAF (I know, that's another film at a different studio).
Joan is hilarious in this parading around occupied Paris in designer gowns and some of her typically outrageous hats. Yes, there's a marginal reason she wears those outlandish clothes SOME OF THE TIME, but this was definitely an MGM confection, not a documentary on the Resistance.
Interesting character actors all over the place: Reginald Owen, Henry Daniell, Howard Da Silva, Philip Dorn, and Natalie Shafer playing one very selfish bitchy lady.
With outrageous films like this, I can see why MGM decided Joan Crawford's stay at the studio had worn out its welcome.
-
For all the gardeners on HHW, the reason that the paper is writing something about me is because I write and edit a gardening show for HGTV that is on every Monday morning at 8AM. I have some friends in Marietta who have a garden I love, so I pitched it to HGTV and they said we could do it. The show will air Monday, May 28 at 8 a.m. Eastern and Pacific and 7 Central and 6 Mountain, and I asked the paper if they would print something about it because the gardeners are so well-known in Marietta.
-
I then opened the Droopy cartoon set. The first film looked rather poor with pale colors, and I was afraid the entire set was going to be washed out.
But I played the film cartoon on the second disc "The Three Little Pups," and the color was astonishing - bright, bold, and fantastic. So, I guess some of the cartoons will be in worse shape than others.
I put the first disc back in the player and will finish those before watching any of the other cartoons on the second disc.
-
The second disc contains the seven Droopy catroon that were done in Cinemascope, and these have been given anamorphic transfers, so I'll be anxious to get to them eventually.
-
DR Edi - even though I'm not a gardener, I'll try to get up Monday in time to see your show. I do like to look at other people's gardens!
-
Joan has left, and I shall now ship some packages, then tell you about the rehearsal.

Hi all. I'm at the airport, safe and sound.
The cab driver was a hoot. He said I think like a woman because I wanted to go early to the airport instead of waiting until the last moment to try and beat traffic to get there. He said he gets lots of calls from young (er) girls who give him only 15 minutes to try to make it the airport before their flight leaves. Sometimes he makes it and sometimes it doesn't.
We talked about the kind of fares he picks up and he said if I got bored, I should fly to Pittsburgh and ride around with him some night. He said it would be more interesting then any movie or play I could go to. I bet that's true! :)

Back from Ye Olde Post Office and all packages are shipped. I also GOT a package at my mail place, so a couple of CDs to listen to, but I'm just having too much fun listening to these Bay Cities CDs - now playing, Robert Russell Bennett's marvelous violin concerto with solist Louis Kaufman. Louis was a trip - I let him come to the mastering session (he and his wife Annette and I had become friends by then - Louis played on all the major Hollywood film soundtracks of the Golden Age). As we worked on the EQ from the old mono tapes, we got it to where we liked it. I turned to Louis and he said he thought it sounded great but asked about the violin sound and said, "Could you put a little more pepper on it?" I'll never forget that line - my engineer and I laughed for days and it became a running gag. The engineer turned a knob and apparently that was the pepper because Louis proclaimed himself satisfied.

From http://jimhillmedia.com
Disney Theatrical has big, big plans for "The Little Mermaid"
With rehearsals for Disney's next Broadway musical just about to get underway, Jim Hill raises the curtain a little. Revealing to JHM readers what he knows about the sets & costume design for this new show
As Ed Sullivan used to say, get ready for " ... a really big show."
Or should I say " ... a really TALL show" ?
Either way, that's all that the folks at Disney Theatrical can talk about these days. The immense size of the sets that scenic designer George Tsypin has created for their newest musical, "The Little Mermaid."
As Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Productions, explained in an interview with Playbill.com :
"What I can tell you is it's big — physically. It has scale because George Tsypin works with scale. He was an architect, and he comes at things from a very structural point of view. It's a pretty aggressive design sense, which is great. I knew of him through the opera world through Julie [Taymor]. It's his first Broadway musical."
And just like Ms. Taymor did with her Tony Award-winning version of "The Lion King," Tsypin chose not to try & replicate the look of Disney's 1989 animated version of "The Little Mermaid." But -- rather -- went back to the source material (I.E. Hans Christian Andersen's original story) to draw his inspiration. With the hope that George might then create something that looked both classic & romantic.
Well, according to what Disney Theatrical insiders have told me, Tsypin delivered in spades. Though the end result is a show that looks decidedly different from the animated cartoon, the sets for Broadway's "Mermaid" still look absolutely amazing. With all these tall flats & scrims that literally tower over the stage. Where even the waves in the ocean are rendered in the Art Nouveau style. And plexi-glass & projections combine to give audiences the impression that Ariel & her finny friends really are living "Under the Sea."
Speaking of the fish in this show ... The stage version of "The Little Mermaid" will actually use a variety of techniques in order to create all of the creatures that one would expect to find in Triton's undersea kingdom. In some cases, the fish will just be puppets. While in other cases (Particularly when that character has a speaking and/or singing role), the performers will then wear their fish body on their heads as sort of a hat / mask combo. With their own mouth & eyes supplying the mouth & eyes for that creature.
Which (I know) sounds kind of odd. But those who have actually seen Tatiana Noginova's costumes in action say that they really look spectacular. Particularly in the case of Titus Burgess, who plays Sebastian in this Broadway-bound musical. To help sell the idea that this large black man is actually a tiny little crab, Titus's face and hands will first be painted red while the rest of Burgess's body will be hidden by a black and/or camouflage body costume.
As to how these performers will then give the impression that they're actually gliding around under the water, "The Little Mermaid" 's choreographer Stephen Mear came up with a pretty ingenious solution. He's going to have his cast wear modified heelys (You know ? Those skate / sneaker things that the kids all wear today ?). Which will then allow these performers to zoom around the stage as good mer-people should.
Given that "The Little Mermaid" 's cast now has to learn to dance on roller skates plus master the 11 new songs that Alan Menken & Glen Slater has written for this show ... Well, these folks are going to need all six of the weeks that have been set aside for rehearsals (Which get underway shortly, by the way) in order to learn how to properly perform this new musical. Which is going to be quite a challenge, given that "The Little Mermaid" features on-stage storms, magical transformations and even full-sized whales swimming across the stage.
In preparation for this rather intense period of rehearsal, the show's leads and supporting players have spent the last few weeks fulfilling their outside obligations as well as tying up loose ends. Earlier this month, Sierra Boggess (Who's playing the title role from "The Little Mermaid") put in her last few performances as Christine in the Las Vegas production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Phantom of the Opera." Similarly, Norm Lewis (Who'll be playing King Triton in Disney's new musical) just bowed out of the Broadway revival of "Les Miserables." As did Eddie Korbich, who recently left "The Drowsy Chaperone" so that he could then prepare to play the part of Scuttle.
And as for Sherie Rene Scott (Who landed the truly juicy role of Ursula the Sea Witch) ... This Disney Theatrical vet (I.E. Scott originated the part of Amneris in "Aida" and regularly stopped that show with her over-the-top performance as the fashion-conscious queen) managed to sneak in one last try-out of her new cabaret act, "a work in progress" earlier this month before she then had to strap on those tentacles and go back to work for the Mouse.
After rehearsing "The Little Mermaid" for all of June and most of July in NYC, the cast & crew will then leave NYC for Denver. Where Disney's newest musical then begins a seven week out-of-town try-out at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts on July 26th. From there, it's back to New York City, where previews begin on November 3rd. And -- if all goes according to plan -- "The Little Mermaid" opens on Broadway on December 6th.
Anyway, that's the latest Scuttle(butt) on the Broadway version of "The Little Mermaid." Over the next few months, JHM will periodically be checking in on Disney Theatrical's latest production. And -- from time to time -- we'll be sharing some other tails ... er ... tales of "The Little Mermaid," as this show makes its (hopefully) trouble-free voyage to the Great White Whale ... er ... Way.

RE: UGLY BETTY
some spoilers from season finale
What i do agree with you on is that justin (little boy) went overboard with getting the lead in the musical. First of all he is so talented, i seriously doubt the boy who they cast was better. But i didn't like how flippant he was about giving the other boy nuts. I believe that the writers tried to make it seem not so bad by saying that justin merely offered to swap and the other boy really wanted to do it. The other boy should have asked what was in the food (any kid with a nut allergy would not merely eat someone else's food.
But i was not happy that that was how justin got his part. So i get why you didn't like it either.

A Camp Classic in the Making?
Entertainment Weekly says of series debut of The Lair, set for Friday 6/1 at 8:00 PM EST:
"Some series can [and should] be judged by their credits. Written by Fred Olsen Ray ["Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers"], and costarring erstwhile adult-film actor Colton Ford, this gay vampire thriller features groaners like a randy club bouncer declaring "I'm also the service manager!", and a gratuitous 71-second shower scene where newspaper reporter Thom [David Moretti] scrubs his washboard abs till they gleam. Hard work. No wonder the dude takes a nap after his boyfriend becomes the possible victim of a killer praying on chiseled, enthusiastically groomed men. D-.

But doesn't THE LAIR sound like intentional camp, though?

Much like Broadway's XANADU, I would guess.

Disney Theatrical has big, big plans for "The Little Mermaid"
With rehearsals for Disney's next Broadway musical just about to get underway, Jim Hill raises the curtain a little. Revealing to JHM readers what he knows about the sets & costume design for this new show
Given that "The Little Mermaid" 's cast now has to learn to dance on roller skates plus master the 11 new songs that Alan Menken & Glen Slater has written for this show ...
And I have to say, some of those 11 new songs are quite beautiful. The big ballad for Prince Eric made me cry the first time I played through it.

Stepped away for a mo, to get dinner in the oven. Roast chicken (spatchcocked) with a cilantro/lemon/lime butter tucked under the skin, roast carrots, and store-bought polenta (basil/garlic flavor).
It's the second run with the chicken, which turned out great last time. I want to see if I can recreate what I did last time.
-
And I have to say, some of those 11 new songs are quite beautiful. The big ballad for Prince Eric made me cry the first time I played through it.
Oh, you and your "big fat heart!" ;)

Summer is here.
I got to work at eight this morning, and the place was already filling up with customers. I mean, at eight in the morning, with two registers running, we already had lines! I'd forgotten what a rush the summer can be.
And I do mean rush. I got lucky, and didn't have self-check duty today. Instead, I had people with full carts, sometimes two carts, spending two, three, four hundred dollars on what they wanted for the weekend. For the most part they were all very friendly (there's always a couple of jerks, can't avoid them). Irene, one of our newer checkers, started work shortly after I did, and I never had a chance to turn around and say hello until the end of my shift! (We both laughed about that - she had been as swamped as I was, and she had one of the express lanes.)
It'll be like this all weekend, and sort of like this all summer.

That sounds like an awful lot of work, DR Tomovoz.

Well, I have a signed Kimmel (or two).

With four sets of batteries, I was able to get about five photos before all the batteries were dead.
DR Laura, did you try the type of batteries that my DH recommended?
I rarely have to change batteries when I'm taking a lot of pictures if I start of with a recharged set.

You'd need to be a millionaire to attend the celebration François. I can't can't. (even though The Riviera is all the rage)
It was Janis Ian who was "Society's Child" (even before she learned the truth at 17)
I guess Lance Armstrong's bicycle is named :True Love" rather than a yacht. With bicycle clips Oh!(calypso)

I rarely have to change batteries when I'm taking a lot of pictures if I start of with a recharged set.
It is something inside the camera itself. My DH thinks it is the battery contacts and is trying to fix it.
-
But first, I need to go to my sister's house and replace a light fixture. It shouldn't take too long.
Uh oh. Maybe it will be like at my house when we replaced a light fixture, which then turned into a new sink, vanity, bathtub, faucets, paint, etc.

I was trying to wait up for DR Danise, but will have to leave that to those of you in other time zones.
'night!
-
Danise said the shuttle could take hours getting her home. It depends which bus she ends up on, hopefully the short one tonight.
Jhvw-It sounds like a great plan for the summer & fall. Also nice to see you.
-
DR Ginny-I’m glad DS Rob won’t be driving home after his big outing today. How far away from you are the job & campus?
I wish I were jogging. I haven’t had a walk, hike or jog since before we went to Portland, and only twice since I was in Pittsburgh.
-
Hi Honey, I'm home!
Riding the shuttle is the best example of the theory of relativity known to man. Their idea of "It's just going to be 20 minutes" and mine are about an hour apart. Oy!
Anyway, I'm safe and sound and home. The dogs were overjoyed to see me. Both are trying to lay their heads in my lap as I type this so there may be some mistakes.
Forgive me but I am most tired and have a headache. I shall retire and won't get up until I feel like it tomorrow.

Great idea, DR DANISE!!

My guess would be that ANY appearance by Gene Kelly anywhere right now would be "special"!
-
Good night all. I have got to go lay down while I can still get my contacts out and get ready for bed without just falling down.
I shall see you all sometime tomorrow!
-
Arrrrr! (Well someone had to say it)
Yee said it, matey! 8)

WELCOME HOME, DANISE!

Isn't Gene Kelly appearing nitely in XANADU on Broadway?
-
People do return from Brooklyn.
Did you take the last exit to Brooklyn?
(a Gene Pitney reference)
(A Mark Knopfler reference too)
-
I took the last train to Brooklyn. My father & brother met me at the station.

I took the last train to Brooklyn.
So cheap of you; what are the other customers going to do? ;)

Pirate walks into a bar. Bartender hasn't seen him for awhile and says:
"Wow. Must be rough being a pirate. You have a peg leg, a hook for a hand, and an eyepatch...."
"Yea. We were practicing with the cannon on the first day and I got my leg shot off, and I got this one."
"Hmmm.....how about the hook?"
"Well we were sword fighting in a pirate fight, and I got my hand cut off, so they put on this hook."
"Hmmm....how about the eyepatch?"
"Oh well, a bird pooped in my eye."
"That wouldn't hurt your eye so much, would it?"
"Well - it was my first day with the hook."
Johnny Depp would love that story I'm sure! :D

CD [car]: High Fidelity
DVD: Who Killed the Electric Car. The "UP" series [Apted]
I love them all!
-
Aren't skeet an endangered species?
Skeet are fun to shoot but hard to field dress.
But we did yard work and then went to the concert instead. Maybe we still will if I get home from Alabama on Sunday before it gets dark.
I will be there visiting another wonderful gardener whose show I wrote and edited. I'm looking forward to seeing it in person!
-
Kevin Spacey's on Letterman right now talking about the play he's in...
-
It is so dry and dusty here that I am going to need a dust mask to finish mowing the grass...errrr...weeds.
-
I think we get Letterman. I must check - KS is one of the few actors I admire!
K-PAX is one my favourite movies and his performance in "Shipping News" was "PERFECT" for the character.
-
Lettermen is "buried" here at 1.25am.
-
When I read The Shipping News, I thought Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be perfect for the main character.
I didn't like the movie as well as the book, but I think Spacey can always make any movie better.
I think PSH would make a perfect Ignatius if anyone ever made a movie of "Confederacy of Dunces". And I also loved him as Lester Bangs in ALMOST FAMOUS.
-
OK---Gotta hit the hay so I can get up early to go to Alabammy.
-
Nite DR Edisauras.
-
Busy day! I watched:
"Paint Your Wagon" -- looks loverly on HDTV in anamorphic presentation. Seberg's performance remains a joy. Even Eastwood and Marvin "sound" good (especially compared to what we get too often nowadays).
"The Americanization of Emily" -- my first time seeing it. WONDERFUL!
"Peau d'Ane" ("Donkey Skin") -- gorgeous film, exquisite Deneuve. LeGrand score nowhere near one of his very best, but he does use a lovely theme in many variations.

Good Evening!
Back from an impromptu Game Night at a friend of of a friend's place. It was very cool. We started off with a round of Scrabble. I lost. And then we moved on to two games that the friend of a friend invented. Very cool games, and very cool play. And he has three more being "published" this fall. And once I get the proper names of the ones we played tonight, I'll pass those on. But it really was a very nice evening.

Letterman doesn't care.
He's filthy rich.
Sadly, we have no Australian programming on our TV schedules...that I know of.
-

YES!
I thought that was "in production" at one point and time. Wasn't it?
-And just what's going on with the film version of "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay"?
-
OH! This (http://www.sugarbombs.com/kavalier/news2007may.html#227) is what is going on with the movie version of "TAAoK&C"
-
I guess I'll watch one more film before going to bed.
Don't know what it'll be yet. I may just watch "Law and Order: SVU", but it's somehow not the same.
-
Welcome Home, DR Danise!
Hope you're sleeping very well right now. :)
-
I gather there is a USA production of Oz comedy "Kath & Kim" being made and "Thank God Your Here" (or whatever it is called) has an American version. I doubt that there has been any OZ TV worthwhile in the last few years - thanks to "Reality" TV shows.
Top rating show here last week was "It Takes Two". (Singers such as David Campbell take on a "celebrity" as a singing partner).
-
TOTD: I've been too busy compiling and burning CDs. We are still enjoying Series 2 of "Deadwood".
-
Colin's Birthday present was the Dame Judi Dench collection. (BBC dramas etc).
-
Forgot to mention that the compere of "It Takes Two" is one of my ex-students. (and a very funny and delightful young man he was and is)
-
I'm the only one in the jernt?
-
Ate some dinner, then had to run a night time errand, then watched a motion picture on DVD, and shall now relax at Ye Olde Computer.
-
TOTD - I'm now listening to Carmen Cavallaro "Alone Together - The Art Of the Cocktail Piano"
