Well, you've read the notes, the notes had some venting but no whining, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - and to that they just said, "That's what you think, butt cheek."
-
And the word of the day is: SCRUTATOR!
-
A reminder to those who ordered Return To Oz but haven't done their paypal payment - please do so now that paypal is working - I really want to only have to go to the post office once to ship all these packages. Thank you.

FADE IN:
NIGHT - A RAIN SLICKED STREET
A couple walks down the street, arm in arm. They stop and kiss. The rest of the street is deserted. From around a corner come three young thugs, the crotch of their jeans down around their knees, ratty shirts, and unkempt hair. They spy the couple, whisper to each other, then approach.

Goodnight DR SlingShot.

Hopefully I have now ordered the Cd through paypal!

Thug 1: Look at the two lovebirds!
Thug 2: Yeah, let's mess them up!
Thug 3: Yeah, I'm all about that!
Man: You boys move along, you hear? We're just taking the evening and we don't need to be interrupted by The Three Stooges.
The thugs look at each other, then back at the man.
Thug 1: Oh, man, you're toast!
Thug 2: Burnt toast!
Thug 3: I get the girlfriend!
They move toward the man and woman in a menacing way. The man steps in front of the woman, blocking her from the thugs.
Man: I've warned you.
Thug 1: He's warned us.
Thug 2: I'm so scared.
Thug 3: We're gonna hurt you, man! And the girlfriend is mine.
The thugs move even closer. The man looks at them with steely eyes.
The thugs move to attack, but before they get even two steps, the man lifts one of the thugs off the ground as if he were made out of paper and throws him against the other two - they all go crashing to the ground.
Man: That's what you think, butt cheek.
Thug 1 gets up and lunges at the man, but the man hits him, splitting the thug's head in two. Blood gushes everywhere. The other two thugs take off, running down the street.
The man looks at the girl and smiles.
Man: I warned them, didn't I?
Woman: You did. You're something else.
Man: Yes, I'm something else.
They walk down the rain-slicked street as the MAIN TITLE comes up:
THE VENTILATOR
-
Hopefully I have now ordered the Cd through paypal!
Hasn't shown up - did you use kritzerland@adelphia.net?
-
Yep.
-
Yes, DakotaCelt, Jerome was a silver mining town. It clings to the side of the mountain. The brothels have been turned into art galleries.
-
I just watched "Tommy". I thought it was nuts in 1975. It still is.

Good morning North America.

Thinking about Mr Walty and DRS RODZINSKI & TPUNK.
-
Vibes for Marty and his Masters......
-
Great pics yesterday....a ghost town!!! New dead things!!!
And a great column from DR RODZINSKI....thanks for the link DR FJL.
-
Working today....by myself for a couple of hours....on a Saturday....with a book signing scheduled....
Whew!
-
Goodnight all. Have a great Saturday.
-
Rodzinski and TPunk, I am so sorry to hear about Walty. It is so had to do the things we need to do sometimes. He was blessed to have you two in his life.
-
I am Thinking THE VENTILATOR is a hit!!!
-
And DRS LAURA & SANDRA have come up with the BEST tagline for THE VENTILATOR:
NEW DEAD THINGS!!!!
-
He vents this way and he vents that way
-
Ain't nothin' goin' on but the vent
-
He's Austrian....then he vent avay.
-
I think The Ventilator is one of my favorite scenes from WHITE HEAT.
-
Off to work. Heigh ho.
-
Seven and a half vents
They don't mean a heck of a lot
-
Half a six-vents
-
And one for Holler
-
I'll have to draw a Vent diagram
-
The brothels have been turned into art galleries.
Perhaps DR MBarnum would like to see the Museum of Sex while he's terrorizing Manhattan?
-
Saturday morning greetings! It's an information-waitressing day for me, but, hoo and ray, my last Saturday to work until July 14.
Sympathies to DRs Rodzinski and TPunk on the loss of Walty.
-
Good morning, all! Another day at Toyland and later, p'raps, dinner with Mr Kevin Spirtas.Beyond that, my day is completely open.
Because of Quilter's "Children's Overture," I've been listening to the orchestral music of him, Eric Coates, and Edward German this morning. All exhibit excellent musical training, fine sense of form and wonderful melodic content, but I feel it could all be music of the same composer. It's good light music, so I'm not complaining, mostly just contemplating.

DR Rodzinski, I remember when I asked about Walty at FJL's apartment and you and TPunk told me of his condition. That is so sad! But I'm glad you were able to make that decision for his benefit. It's a tough thing to do, but done out of love, and I'm sure Walty was thankful that you loved him that much. I'm sure my ancient kitty is showing Walty around right now!

My cousin had to put her 19 year old love cat, Rusty to sleep. She is my cousin who lost her husband 6 months ago (I had posted about it and sent your vibes on to her.)
Rusty was like her "second spouse"---always slept on the pillow between her and her husband. So I know it's really tough to lose them both so close together. I like to think that Rusty hung in there to help her get through that rough time.
Boy, between that, seeing my girlfriend's 19 year cat off a few days ago, and the news about Marty and Walty, I'm all weepy.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I've already had breakfast too. And Steve made the breakfast! Eggs, bacon, potatoes, OJ, coffee. :)
So, I believe we're going to head out for a bit of window shopping and probably some lunch in Carytown - my favorite stretch of block in Richmond - and then I'll head on over to my parents' new house. *I'm not sure what, if any, sort of internet set-up is in place, so, if I don't post later tonight, that probably means there isn't one.

Am I to assume that Guy Haines will be singing the song over the title credits for "THE VENTILATOR"? And just who's names will we be seeing in those opening credits?

DR Jose - Your Chorus Line news last night was very interesting. If you're "in" over the weekend of June 29-July 1, DH Richard and I will try to attend!

I'm trying to come up with some pun about Ventin' Crisp, The Naked Uncivil servant, but I'm drawing a blank on that.

Good morning!
A bit cooler and more overcast today since we're supposed to get some storms over the weekend. A little rain would ease the drought and make things a bit cooler. I'm all for that, even if it does mean I'll have to mow the grass a few days after it rains.
-
Enjoyed your new column, DR Rodzinski, very much. And warm thoughts for you and DR TPunk about Walty.

Have Vent, Will Travel.

Looking forward to seeing the special features in the IF.... package. Particularly interested in Lindsay Anderson's THURSDAY'S CHILDREN, the 1954 documentary short that won an Oscar. I've never seen it before, and it sounds really good.
-
I love GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. I've seen it on both stage and screen and found it riveting in both mediums. I think it's his best work.
-
I also love THE VERDICT, one of my all-time favorite courtroom dramas. I knew Ben Kingsley was going to win the Oscar that year, but I really thought Newman deserved it.
-
My sympathies to DR RODZINSKI and TPUNK on DC WALTY.
-
GREAT opening to THE VENTILATOR, BK!!

Thanks you guys and gals for all the nice thoughts. HHW is the best site on the net because everyone is so articulate. TPunk left for a vacation to Puerto Rico yesterday but I will be sure she sees everyone's kindness.

edisaurus, yes I'll add it. If people think they've made their payments (like tomovoz) they sure haven't shown up in Ye Olde Paypal accout) - can everyone let me know, and I'll double check - but if you've made payment just double check to see it's gone through, please. I thank everyone for their vibes for Marty. I'm sure they helped make his passing easier this morning.
As per our scheduled appointment, we took Marty to see the vet this morning. She was going to drain some of the fluid from his abdomen, to ease his discomfort, and suggested that we come back in an hour, maybe to get a cup of coffee or whatever. She told us that if he perked up, things would be fine, but if he didn't that we'd better plan for the worst.
Over breakfast, we talked about anything and everything except Marty. When we got back to the animal hospital, we were told that Marty had passed on quietly just minutes earlier.
They had set him down off of the examination table, and he walked around for a little, and then he laid down to rest. So at least he was comfortable.
He was a very good dog, always taking care of the other pups (even if he did have to put them in their places now and then). It's better for him now. And he had a much longer life than we'd been told he would have.
He made my life better, I know that.
Rest in peace, my big baby boy.

-
DRs SWW and Der Brucer, I am so sorry to hear your news.
I have returned depressed and quite fraught from Toyland about 3 hours earlier than anticipated. I cannot go into the frustrations I have only to say that because we were supposed to be out of our space by March 31 and we still have no lease on a new office space, we may be evicted from our location - ridiculous for a billion dollar foundation - causing us to be prepared to go into storage until another space is found or a new lease signed. As a result, the office is in chaos: empty and packed cartons everywhere, no air conditioning or ventilation beyond a fan, and today, it seems that yesterday afternoon the sound system was packed away, so I can no longer play music or the radio while I work. Our office manager is doing a great job but no one's really in charge, except in California, and clearly those of us who use the space don't communicate enough.
I would have recommended the sound system be one of the last things packed, but no one asked my opinion, and unfortunately, I never thought of suggesting it. As for the job, some days I feel I'm bailing water on the Titanic and today is one of them. I'm going to the NYPL. I can work and it's air conditioned.
-
Rodz, so sorry to hear about Walty. As you said, he was an exceptionally friendly cat. Hope Kilbot gets through it OK. You and TP did the right thing.
Jose, I rarely went into the Gulf so I didn't do the Stingray shuffle though other more beachy types certainly did. They also saw more dolphins and egrets and other beautiful birds. Lots of those images were captured on their cameras. We are waiting for the pictures.
We only went to the Bubble Room once. I think they brought out 4 baskets of bread and each group went through two baskets each. I had the special where you get a salad, an appetizer and dessert so I had room for the bread, but others eating the regular size meals came home mighty stuffed!
-
DR Elmore - I'm sorry to read of your frustrating morning. Sorry, too, that I sent my email just as you were posting :-\

Oh, gosh such sad animal friend news to wake up to this morning...Der Brucer and SWW I am so sorry about Marty...he was almost as much a part of HHW as you two are. My thoughts are with you all.
-
And my thoughts and hugs are also with TPunk, Rodzinski, and Kilbot. I was fortunate to have met Cat Walty, even shared his room with the he and Kilbot...such a sweet, beautiful cat. I am very sad, but my best thoughts go out to all 3 of you. Take care.

I don't know from the TOD.

I am taking a leaf out of DearReaderLaura's book as I am awaiting the telephone man to arrive. He is going to fix the phone jack in the bedroom environment. Otherwise it will be a day of cleaning the house and doing yardwork. Then this afternoon I drive 2 hours south to meet my brother Dan and our mom at Rice Hill. Mom went to Medford to visit for the week. Dan and I will trade her off and I will bring her back to Salem.

I am so sorry to hear about Marty! What a sudden loss! That will be quite an adjustment for you and your tribe of canines.
I am a member of petloss.com and every Monday night at 10PM est there is a candle ceremony for those who have recently lost pets or have pets who are ill. My DH and I often participate...we sit on the porch with a big candle and send vibes to friends who need them.
This Monday night I will light 4 extra candles in memory of Jack, Rusty, Walty and Marty. May they all be frolicking and pain-free in the animal afterlife. Peace and consoling vibes to their caretakers.
-
BK---I am eternally grateful!
-
Tomovoz---beautiful pictures of your boids! I went right out and gave my birds (and by default, squirrels) an extra heaping helping of birdie num-nums.
I also picked up the mail, and was delighted by your package of treats! You must have the most extensive collection of music of anyone I know---and I know a LOT of music geeks! the sequence of music is nicely arranged and I've enjoyed every song so far! (I think Jose got the best song, IMHO).
It does bring home the fact that I'm older than I think I am! I always think the same thing when I see cars or footage from the year I was born. It almost looks prehistoric!
-
MBarnum, you are ever so kind! It looks like I have many nights of lurid entertainment in store for me---when I stop working until midnight, anyway.
Thanks so much!

I noticed that SINGDAW watched VENUS. Did anyone else? I quite liked it. I thought it was an excellent contrast between generational values. And Peter O'Toole is such a joy to watch.
-
They have a chat room (I like to think of it as French for "cat room") so any hour of the day or night when you're feeling sad about your pet, there is almost always someone there to talk to who shares your feelings. They are tremendously compassionate, like the folks on HHW. They helped me a lot on those nights when I couldn't sleep after losing my ancient cat.
I go back from time to time, to offer support. Other people do, too. They all have a wolf suffix after their names, given to them by the moderator as sort of a title to those who return to help others.
-
Sounds like a very nice website. I know how devastating it can be to lose a pet.
-
bk, your package arrived...thanks so much! :)

Ah, SINGDAW has joined us.
What did you think of VENUS, SINGDAW?

DRs SWW and der Brucer...I don't believe I expected the news about Marty so quickly. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Good afternoon, DR Jeanne! Truth be told, I have been running errands since I got out of work yesterday, and haven't had 2 hours together to sit down and watch the darn thing...still queued up! I will report back when I've managed to watch it. But I'm expecting good things after all the reports!

Good Afternoon!
Back from Carytown. It was nice to find that none of my favorites stores had closed - although there were some new storefronts, and a few papered-overed windows. I managed to pick up some cute stuff for my nieces and nephew. I was going to get a house-warming present for my parents, but I decided to wait until I see what they do and don't have in the new place. Alas, finding a birthday present for my mom was not to be today. There's one other cool store here in town, and I may stop by there on the way to the new house in a few. But all in all, a very nice day of walking and shopping. -Oh, and, yes, chocolate was bought and consumed. :)
-
Well, time for me to pack up my things here, and see if my car still starts after these couple of months. Steve has been moving it from one of the side of the street to the other over the past couple of weeks, now to see if it will make it more than just a couple of yards.
Again, I'm not sure what kind of internet connectivity my parents have at the new house, so if I don't post later on tonight, don't worry. It just means I'm going through boxes. I hope. ;)

Good day, my friends. This is rather a somber weekend at HHW for those who know the joy of our animals.
-
I just got a CD of Celebration in the mail from bk. I was in a production of Celebration in college, and haven't heard the music since. Yes, so many years ago!! Should be a fun trip down memory lane.
-
Yes, DR TCB, it is indeed. I'm not sure people that haven't made pets part of their families understand the deep bond that develops and the grief associated with such a loss.
-

I wrote about my feelings a couple of weeks ago. I liked it very much. I thought the actor who played his best friend was O'Toole's performance equal and deserved a nomination in the supporting category.

Did an ebay search for Last Starfighter and found this listing. Who knew?
"HERE IS THE INCREDIBLY RARE OFF-BROADWAY SHOW

This CD has 16 tracks.

I purchased this years ago for my own collection. I've been a serious soundtrack collector all my life, and now have a need to liquidate my collection. If you don't see it for sale, write me and ask me. I've collected every John Williams score CD available and will be selling all of them. Thanks for your interest, and for bidding!"
This is an original pressed cd, not a CD-R or duplicate!

I'm loving this birthday CD...I keep popping it out of my CD player every few songs to see whose birthday or who the artist is. Lots of random songs but put together so skillfully---what a treat, Tomovoz!
-
Cooler weather finally did arrive. We have gotten a drizzle of rain, and it's cooled things off considerably. I may be able to cool the house down enough so that I don't have to run the attic fan during the night.
-
I began my afternoon watching another episode of THE CLOSER (note I got the spelling/typing correct today). This was the one with the member of the paparazzi found dead on the pavement. Enjoyable episode, and I didn't immediately remember who the killer was. It took me awhile into the episode to recall the identity of the murderer.
-
DRs TPunk and Rodzinski, I'm so sorry to hear about Walty. You guys made a very loving decision.
-
Watched another ANGEL episode, too. This finally wrapped up the demon from below eath story arc, but opened a new story with Angel's former identity Angellus taking center stage at the end of the episode. Can't wait to see the next one to see this sexy slayer in action.
-
Earlier this week, Universal announced that in September, they 're going to release a double feature with two historical dramas not yet released on DVD: ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS and MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS. I'm excited to get both of these.
I have ANNE on a laserdisc, but I haven't seen MARY in decades, and never had it on tape or laser.
Tonight, I will spend part of the evening watching the laserdisc of ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS. Should make a nice comparison to the story going on presently with THE TUDORS (though ANNE is historically inaccurate, too, I believe.)

I wonder if it is that WhiteSheik guy trying to sell off his collection.

Good afternoon DRs and H/Ks....
OK, so I've been in better moods in my life and I'm sure that that is coloring my impressions and reactions today. But I'm about on the bottom of the floor by now.
First, my CD of "My Brother Nikhil" arrived yesterday afternoon, so I saved it to watch on a nice leisurely "midday on a Saturday." I'm expecting something kind of "fun, coming of age, self-awareness" type of film, and probably with a little crazy Bollywood musical number here and there. OH NO.....not at all. I won't say anything else, for those who haven't seen it.
I'm also having to do some pretty intense thinking and decision making, about some very important and weighty personal matters.
And so, I think "I'll go cheer up with the wonderful folks at HHW." Well, I certainly send out my deepest loving sympathies to all who have lost wonderful pet-friends from their families. Just reading the news from several of the instances reduced me to tears at my computer.
I'm not trying to be morbid or maudlin..... but I also can't fake "funny."

The following stuff is trivial but may cheer up some of you:
A Brief Chat with Diane Disney Miller
In about two and a half years, there are going to be two museums about Walt Disney: the web-based one you’re visiting now http://disney.go.com/disneyatoz/familymuseum/index.html
and a real bricks and mortar museum in San Francisco. Beginning this month, the virtual museum will be bringing you periodic reports about the development of the tangible one. It seemed only appropriate to begin this series with some brief comments from Walt’s daughter, Diane – whose vision and energy have infused the effort thus far.
Q: With all that’s been written about Walt Disney, why is a Museum to tell his life story important?
Diane: Because there’s been so much said about him that’s vicious and malicious and wrong. It feels like he’s been attacked more viciously and in a more outlandish way than almost everybody. Crazy things have been said about him that have no truth. A fifth grade girl was doing a report about Walt Disney and she had taken a book out of the library and the first question she asked me was ''Did your Dad wash his hands compulsively?''
Q: And the Museum will help to get rid of that kind of nonsense?
Diane: What we will aim to do that with the Museum is what Richard and Katherine Greene have done with our Web site for years. Early on they got all these letters saying, ''This is fine, but where’s the real Museum?'' We had things that needed a place like the Academy Awards®. We thought we could have a small museum, and then the idea grew larger. We saw that we had to do it in a manner he’d be pleased with. It had to have a certain amount of theatricality and artistic presentation and be as accurate and complete as possible.
Q: What’s the most important artifact visitors will find there?
Diane: His voice. When they hear his voice, they will immediately know him better. We’re using his voice, the voice of my Uncle Roy, and interviews with a great number of other people. That will be our chief artifact.
Q: Who do you envision as the audience?
Diane: The audience will be people who are interested in him, of all ages. And maybe some who didn’t know they were interested until they stumbled in.
Q: When is it due to open?
Diane: We hope to open in the fall of 2009.
Q: If there’s one message you hope that people will come out with, what would that be?
Diane: I hope they come out liking him. But even if they don’t like him, I hope they take away a message from his life. Love of people. Curiosity about things. He wanted to entertain, families in particular. That was a big thrust, the importance of families and the things that families do together. He wanted to bring in all the things that interested him so. History, and not just of our country that he loved so much, but all kinds of history and nature and science and all the wonders of the world.
-
I hope you have found your Hearts of Stone.
Oh yes---my DH and I have been cruising around listening to your CD! Neither of us knew this song. We also liked the Phil Harris song and could picture our friends The Dady Brothers regaling their fans in Ireland with this song.
It made for a most pleasant evening, with one of my favorite meals---vietnamese noodles topped with salmon grilled in grape leaves followed by a trip to a gelato place my DH discovered. Yummmm.
-
Thank you for the Museum story DR François.

I remember "The Thing" very well from my childhood.

There is a wonderful garden south of Atlanta that was created during the Chataqua era by one of its stars, Hetty Jane Dunaway. Walt and Roy Disney used to go there in the summers and hang out. I've wondered why they did. Maybe the new museum will offer some answers!
An amazingly persistent woman discovered these gardens decades after they had fallen into ruin and had grown over with kudzu and ivy. She restored them to their former glory. I have such admiration for what she's done! (We did a gardening show on her a few years back)

I went to work earlier today, and now I'm at home. :)

Thanks for the CD, Tomovoz!! It arrived today! ;D

Thank you for the info! I did not know that about the Disney brothers and, after a Google search, I came up that elusive detail too...
"Welcome to Dunaway Gardens of Newnan, Georgia. These Gardens have too long been a hidden treasure, located only 30 minutes south of Atlanta, 6 miles north of Newnan, and minutes from the quaint historical town of Roscoe. This once magnificent garden was allowed to fall into a dilapidated state for many decades. Its beauty being choked by a tangle of vines and the passage of time. Dunaway Gardens was a theatrical training ground for producers, directors and performers of the arts during the golden years of the 20's, 30's and 40's. Hetty Jane Dunaway was a talented vivacious actress from Arkansas, who rose to fame as one of the most popular on the Chautauqua Circuit. She was the creator of the theatrical training center and floral rock gardens that bear her name, Dunaway Gardens. These Gardens have played host to Ballet Troupes, indoor and outdoor theater, as well as Walt and Roy Disney and Minnie Pearl. Until recently, these Gardens have not been open or in bloom for nearly half a century. Welcome back, Dunaway Gardens!"

At first I thought the pic was a HHW get together.

Are the Dunaway Gardens also knoiwn as the Faye Gardens in some circles?

Thanks for the CD, Tomovoz!! It arrived today! ;D
and it is not even Monday Monday yet.
-
More on the subject!
In the summer of 2000 when Jennifer Bigham and her husband Roger drove by the kudzu-enveloped ruins of Dunaway Gardens, she instantly knew that this once thriving training center for the performing arts was her destiny. Conceived and built by Hetty Jane Dunaway, an actress on the Chatauqua traveling circuit in the early years of the 20th century, the gardens had their official opening in 1934 after 18 years under construction.
Located about 50 miles southwest of Atlanta, the 25 acres of hillside gardens consisted of rock terraces (the rock came from local farms), a grass amphitheatre and stage, a honeymoon lodge, tea room, natural swimming pool, and a Japanese garden and several smaller spring-fed pools. Various troupes of dancers, lecturers, singers and actors from all over the U.S. came to train and give performances. Walt Disney was a visitor, and Minnie Pearl was the head instructor of the drama school.
Hetty Jane Dunaway died in 1961, and the terraced gardens went into decline. By the time Jennifer saw the property in 2000, kudzu and English ivy smothered most of the acreage, the buildings had disappeared, and much of the rock work had crumbled.

Only in Chinatown I think DR FJL. They do look more fey than bonnie though.

I wrote about my feelings a couple of weeks ago. I liked it very much. I thought the actor who played his best friend was O'Toole's performance equal and deserved a nomination in the supporting category.
Sorry I missed that post, DR MATTH. I was E&T for several weeks. I agree with your point about O'Toole's friend--Leslie Phillips, I believe. I thought the two of them were great and played off one another so well.

François,
A question came up today: what kind of "walk-around" food do the French have? (The equivalent of out hot dogs, hamburgers, cotton candy, ice cream cones. etc. - what do the French nosh while strolling around a country fair ground - if there is such a thing in France).
A lad (age 14) at today's birthday is part of a French class at school and they are joining other language-arts classes in doing a Spanish festival and he is supposed to create something French for the project.
(He was smart enough to know that French Fries were Belgian!)

Oh, very much what you eat over there but mainly cotton candy, candied apples, French fries, ice cream cones or ice cream bars, hot dogs too and the traditional French sandwich made of baguette with butter and ham.... No hamburgers though! Yes, we do have county fairs and traditional annual fairs called "fêtes foraines" or "frairies", NOT to be confused with yesterday's fairies! ;)

Back from a really long and exhausting rehearsal. The reading is "blocked" (basically, we get up, we sit down, we get up, we sit down). I got through it all fine today, but it's so much damn talking and singing and I really have to take care of my voice. The director wants to run it twice tomorrow, and I've told him I'll do it full out once, and then mark it, because otherwise I'll worry I won't have much voice left for our three performances. It's amazing how much trouble this is when you haven't done this sort of thing for so long. It's a nice company of players, though, and I kept the atmosphere light and funny all day. The "composer" was there today, and after we'd blocked everything, I was going over one of his melody lines that made no sense, wasn't like anything else in the song, and had mis-accented words. I found a way to make it work, and the music director was fine, but the composer made the mistake of muttering, "If he sung it correctly it would work." I replied, "I'll tell you why I can't sing it correctly - because every other time you have this line in the song it's the same - this one is impossible to sing without sounding like a total blanking idiot and you should learn the craft of setting words on music so that the words don't have to be pronounced as if you were an Armenian." That shut him up.

I did make it to the bookfair, but I needn't have bothered - there were even less dealers there than last year - they should just fold up their tent and not do this one. I am so all in from the rehearsal. I did get in a jog this morning, and I ate some soup and fries for dinner and now I'll just relax and rest Ye Olde Voicebox for the rest of this evening.

Good Evening!
Greetings from Steve's place!
But isn't Jose supposed to be at his parents' new house tonight?
Well...
*I'll have to break this up into a couple of posts... Otherwise, I'll end up boring myself with the details. ;)
First of all, my car started fine. I did spend some time brushing off some of the dust and all the bird droppings that had accumulated over the past three months. -Yes, three months! I then loaded up my stuff, and proceeded to head over to my parents's new house. But then I remembered I had wanted to stop by and see my friend, Mike, and since he was on the way to my parents' new house... Well...
A few blocks away from Mike's house, I noticed that the temp in the car was getting uncomfortably hot. I looked at the temp gauge, and it was well into the Red-H area! So, I immediately turned up the vents, turned the temp setting to hot, and prayed that I would make it to Mike's house without the car overheating. And I did. Whew!

Too funny, I was so preoccupied with getting photos from behind, I don't see any of his face. The other guys, yes, but not Jeff
-
Too bad, he really is quite cute
-
Well...
Once I parked in front of Mike's house, I went ahead and checked under the hood. There was some light smoke coming from the engine, and I noticed that the bottom part of the engine - I am in no way mechanically-inclined - looked very black, like it was covered in oil. And I think it was that oil that was burning off. I think.
I knocked on Mike's door. No answer. I knocked again - he has one of those train car apartments, and he lives on the second floor, so sometimes it takes a while for the knocking to register - and his doorbell doesn't work either. Then I called him on my cell just to make sure. I could hear his phone ringing inside, and then his answering machine picked up. Hmm...
After some hemming and hawing, I called Steve, and told him about my car situation. At first I was thinking I would just drive back to Steve's place and then he would drive me to my parents' new house. Thankfully, Steve thinks these situations out a bit better, and he suggested that he come pick me up and then bring me to my parents' new house. -And that's what he did. -And I figured my car would be safe in front of Mike's place anyway, and I could figure out how to get it from there. Eventually.
-
I'm thinking fresh peaches and ice cream sounds good. so i must run to the store and get some ice cream.

I thoroughly enjoyed seeing ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS again this evening.
The laserdisc was sharper and more deeply colorful than I remembered it being. In fact, some of the reds were too hot. Marvelous performances by the leading players. And I didn't remember folks like Denis Quilley even being in it. So there were some nice surprises all around.
I suspect the DVD version will look and sound very nice. The laserdisc had some rather feeble stereo music in the surround channels. They'll probably rework it a bit, even though the film is far more about talk than about action.
-
Next, I began watching the special features on the IF.... DVD. I began with a Scottish TV program entitled "Cast and Crew" where various members of the production team were interviewed about their memories about working on the film. Very entertaining. Their interviews were also interrupted several times with filmed comments from Malcolm McDowell and from a 1985 Lindsay Anderson interview.
-
If I looked correctly, there are two other features on the second disc: an interview with actor Graham Crowden (who played the history master), and the Oscar-winning documentary directed by Anderson "Thursday's Children."
-
Well...
Steve arrived a couple of minutes later, and after loading my bags into his car, we headed on over to my parents' new house.
I had called my brother earlier today to get the address for the house again. I knew the general area it was in, and my parents said it would be easy to find, but I had forgotten the actual address. I asked my brother just to text me the address so that I could MapQuest it... "But the development is so new, it's not yet on any of the mapping sites." And he was right. Thankfully, he knew the development next to it, and that helped me look up the directions in advance. Then after finally getting a hold of my mother, she cleared up the mystery.
Well, we only made one wrong turn, but we did find my parents' new house. It's certainly new, and it's certainly big. It's not as big as the house they just moved out of, but it's big. Especially for two soon-to-be retirees. Living room, dining room, breakfast nook, kitchen, master bedroom, master bath, two smaller bedrooms, one full bath, one half bath. A whole lotta house! -However, the garage is strangely small. In any case...
It was good to see my parents, and my parents were happy to see me. And Steve too. We ended up chatting for a while in their new living room - which has a really cool three-sided fireplace unit. Then we all headed out for dinner. And since my Dad has fallen in love with the seafood buffet at Shoney's - "Those are good fried oysters" - we headed on over to Shoney's.
It was buffet. It was Shoney's. It was good and filling. And it was cheap. And since my parents were able to get the senior citizen discount, it was even cheaper. :)
It really was nice just sit and talk for a while, we haven't done that in a while. And it was also nice to see that they still get along with Steve like they always have, and that they still know that Steve is an important part of my life. I never "officially" told them when Steve and I broke up, but they just knew that we were no longer together somewhere along the line. However, they would still occasionally ask how he and his family were doing. :)
During dinner, I finally got all the details of the house sale, as well as their retirement plans. My mom actually had her last day of work this past Friday, and the gentleman who was her assistant at the nursing home has been promoted to Head Dietitian. My father will be staying on for one more week at his job at HHS. He's a bit concerned that according to the job announcement that went out, that he's being "replaced" by three(!) part-time(!) workers. Part-time workers receive no benefits, and they're also requiring that whoever takes the positions stay on for a year minimum, or they will be penalized. Sounds like a lose-lose situation to him, and he's just wondering how long it will actually take to find someone to take over the HHW mess (as in kitchen). In the meantime, his staff will be running the kitchen. Come this coming Friday, he's outta there!
And a week from now, they will, hopefully, be living full-time in Richmond, VA! -Well, technically, Glen Allen, VA, but it's still "Richmond".
-
DR Cillaliz - Do you think you could find a border to line the kitty's litter boxes? One with images of people looking at them? ;)
-
....Sounds like a lose-lose situation to him, and he's just wondering how long it will actually take to find someone to take over the HHW mess (as in kitchen).
We have a kitchen here on HHW?? Where?
-
Well... (And this should be the last "Well....")
Once we got back from dinner, I decided that I should just head back to Steve's tonight. And that I should also get my car from in front of Mike's house, and back over to Steve's neighborhood. I will have to say, that a major part of that decision had to with the fact that my parents had not yet set up any sort of phone, internet or cable in the new house yet. And since I was still in the midst of researching the quickest way to get rid of my car... *Steve will drive me back to my parents' place in the morning, I'll go through the boxes, and then head up to Fairfax with them tomorrow afternoon.
Steve drove me back to Mike's place. After a brief visit with Mike - who was finally home - I drove back to Steve's place. And Mike graciously offered to follow me in his car just in case something happened. And nothing happened. Whew!
And now I'm back here at Steve's, and have been looking up some info on the web. I think I found a place that will just come and tow my car away for $50, but I'll have to call them in the morning to get more details. If it turns out, that they can do it, but not until Monday, then I'll just stay here one more day, and take care of that on Monday. -Then just train up to DC Monday afternoon. Otherwise, I'll just have to leave my car here for another two weeks until I get another window of days to head back down here.
So, all in all, it's been a pretty good weekend here in Richmond. And, frankly, just what I needed. I, too, have been dealing with some 'stuff' lately - I think it's just the season for 'stuff'. Richmond has always had a "head-clearing" effect on me, and I'm very happy I finally made it back down this weekend. Good friends, good parents, good times.

OOPS!!! I guess I really am a Hainsie/Kimlet at heart.
I meant "HHS" - (The Department of) Health and Human Services.

And at least I got it right earlier in the paragraph!

"Those are good fried oysters" -
Any chance they're pan-fried?
der Brucer
Friday night growing up was always take-out pan-fired oysters from the local Philly oyster house (sold in those cardboard containers ("bait-buckets"?) used by chinese restauants for take-out.

Living room, dining room, breakfast nook, kitchen, master bedroom, master bath, two smaller bedrooms, one full bath, one half bath. A whole lotta house! -However, the garage is strangely small.
Well, that'd keep MattH busy!

Umm... This was good-ole Southern cornmeal-breaded deep-frying. *However, the Oyster Bar in Grand Central still does a Oyster Pan Roast - I'm not sure if that's the same thing as "pan-fired". And I've found that if you sit on the counter side of the restaurant rather than at the tables, they will still make it for you "table-side" - well, right behind the counter in front of you. And it's also $2.00 cheaper on the counter-side too. ???

One of major selling points of my parents' new place was that because of the type of development they're in, all the upkeep of the front and backyards - mowing, weeding, etc. - is done by the development. *And my parents were able to sell all their lawn equipment to the new owner of their old house. -In fact, he also bought the dining room table, one large Oriental carpet, two TVs, two large shelving/cabinet units, and even some of their small kitchen electrics!
-
DerBrucer, was the grandlad's birthday party today?
-
Not to be persnickety, but isn't that a "powder room" or a "½ bath"?
der Brucer
Yes, but I still call it a bathroom even though it doesn't have a bath tub.
-
Yes, it is! And so moving on many levels!
I "love" the "Don't wrap it, it's FOR ME!"
I agree

Enough photos....it's 10:00 and I don't know where my ice cream is!

Very cute bathroom, Cillaliz. My DS would plotz if I decorated ours like that, though.

Oh, that would be funny.....I could get a screen with a border of faces and put it around the litter box...

Peanut butter fudge AND chocolate!

Or perhaps some peanut butter fudge????
Oh that sounds good! I didn't go for ice cream, I got distracted and decided to wait until tomorrow...What distracted me is that I can't find my 3 remaining tootsie pops. How on earth could I have lost my tootsie pops?

Perhaps I'll find them with my marbles!

Hmm... So... I don't know why I didn't look up some of these car donation organization before... Or maybe I was just Googling the wrong terms... Or maybe I was just so concerned about dealing with DMV... In any case...
There is one clearing-house organization that will pick up almost any vehicle, in almost any condition. And they will even take care of all the paperwork! -It was the paperwork I was dreading - especially since I'm not really sure where my original title is right now. -It's somewhere in a box. :-\
In any case... I can apply for a duplicate title on-line - cost $10.00. Then make arrangements for the car to be picked up at a later time - cost $0.00! -I will most likely have to have Steve help me out with the hand-off - someone has to sign some papers - but at least I know I can get it done without much hassle.
:)
The forest, the trees... however that saying goes.
-
I think tootsie rolls are the topping for the grandlad's kitty litter birthday cake.
Yes, but these are tootsie pops I think I need to start searching for them again
-
DR Jose, we donated my son's car to the kidney foundation and they did all the paperwork. We felt so bad about giving them the car that we gave them an additional $50 to tow it.

For those who haven't heard about The Lives of Others, here is the synopsis
East Berlin, November 1984. Five years before its downfall, the former East-German government ensured its claim to power with a ruthless system of control and surveillance. Party-loyalist Captain Gerd Wiesler hopes to boost his career when given the job of collecting evidence against the playwright Georg Dreyman and his girlfriend, the celebrated theater actress Christa-Maria Sieland. After all, the "operation" is backed by the highest political circles. What he didn't anticipate, however, was that submerging oneself into the world of the target also changes the surveillance agent. The immersion in the lives of others--in love, literature, free thinking and speech--makes Wiesler acutely aware of the meagerness of his own existence and opens to him a completely new way of life which he has ever more trouble resisting. But the system, once started, cannot be stopped. A dangerous game has begun

DerBrucer, was the grandlad's birthday party today?
Indeed! And the Kitty-Litter Cake was received with universal groans - one kid actuallt ate some.

Vibes to DR Jose to help with his stuff~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks, DR Cillaliz - A lot of my "stuff" had to do with sorting through the remaining boxes-o-stuff I still had at my parents - which have now been moved to their new house. *I owe my brothers Don and Mike big time for helping my Dad out with the move.
I've known for the past couple of years - and I've made no secret about it here on HHW - that I'm a packrat, and that I've been dealing with all those many boxes-o-stuff for years at this point. Will I be able to sort through everything in a weekend? No. Two maybe. Three more likely. Four, definitely. Alas, since I'm now living in New York City, and I still have some boxes-o-stuff in Richmond... Well...
When I looked at the boxes I had at my parents, it was comforting to realize that there really wasn't as much stuff as I was thinking there was. That was the first big sigh of relief. Then when I realized that a few of those boxes were actually filled with "real stuff" not just "stuff stuff", that was another big sigh of relief. So, I'll do a quick sort tomorrow morning, and throw out the definite "trash", and then come down when I come down and take care of the rest of it. In any case...
All that "stuff" has been holding me down the past couple of years. And I've come to realize recently, that all that "stuff" has also prevented me from feeling that I've really made the move to New York City. I mean, there have been people who knew I moved to NYC two years ago, and they still ask me, "So, are you up here full time now?" Couple that with my usual post-show slump (post-All About Us), and a brief period of being "between gigs", well... Let the wallowing begin. :-\
But as I've said, things are starting to line up. Yes, it will still take a few more weeks - if not months - before I get everything in order, but at least now I'm truly being realistic about the whole situation. And, most importantly, I'm finally starting to do something about it.
-
Right again!

William's "real" bithday cake was baked by his aunt - a black Spiderman III (and William was upset because he only got to eat one of Spidey's eyes!)
It also seems that the Hero of the Day is one:

Jose, I have so much stuff I decided to buy a bigger house....which resulted in my parents giving me more stuff....AHHHH. I need to start selling things on eBay...
When I sold my house at the lake I had boxes and boxes of stuff my mother had saved for me over the years and things I had saved. It was very emotional for me to go through all the boxes, sort of a this is your life, but I'm glad I didn't just haul them all to Sioux City. You'll feel much better once you just go for it and make the move.

I am sleepy. I had a busy day of cleaning. I got out the Murphy's Oil Soap and cleaned the kitchen cupboards. They look very nice now. I'm going to clean all day tomorrow. When the mood strikes, I need to go for it. Besides, it's supposed to rain again. It's been raining for several days off and on (except the day they cut the big trees down) and is supposed to rain every day during the next week except for Tuesday.

About 35 Injured When Car Plows Into Street Festival in Washington, D.C.
Sunday , June 03, 2007
WASHINGTON —
A woman sped through a crowded street festival Saturday night, injuring about 35 people including two police officers who drove their motor scooters into the path attempting to stop the driver, authorities said.
The injured, including at least seven critically, were taken to area hospitals, said Alan Etter, a spokesman for the District of Columbia fire department.
Etter said authorities believe the driver was going about 70 mph when she came through the Unifest African-Maeican cultural festival and parade at about 8 p.m. The woman fled the scene and was caught about a block away, he said.
Police identified the driver as Tanya Bell, 35, of Oxon Hill, Md. They said there was a 7- or 8-year-old child in the car with her.
And BK thought LA had a monopoly on careless drivers!
At least she was a good Mom and didn't leave the kid at home unattended!

A paddler maneuvers his outrigger canoe into the water near the InterContinental as the sun sets behind Mt. Otemanu. Author James Michener dubbed Bora-Bora's lagoon "the most beautiful in the world." Michener, stationed here during World War II, is said to have used the island as one of the models for the mythical Bali Hai in his book "Tales of the South Pacific."

Our architect gave me a copy of that. Great album...I should dig it out now that I know that this song has "special" signifigance!

Are the Dunaway Gardens also knoiwn as the Faye Gardens in some circles?
Ha! Well, I have a hard time calling it Dunaway because I love it so much, and our mayor also has the same name. (Dunaway, not Faye.) I don't love him so much, especially since he's best buddies with our evil developer nemesis and saw to it that his buddy got a half a million dollars of our tax money to squander on polo club memberships and expensive motorcycles.
But I'm not bitter!

A friend of mine has started selling things on Amazon marketplace. She says it's much easier than ebay. She's taking us out for brunch tomorrow (She and her hubby are clients as well) and I'm going to get all the details. I've noticed thst I have a lot of VHS tapes I never even opened and watched before buying the same film on DVD!
