As for standing ovations... Well... On a related note, I've also been reading about some of the fans and fanatics who have been lining up at midnight - or even earlier(!) - to be the first in line for student rush seats for Broadway shows.  And there are people who do this repeatedly, day after day.  There were reports on the web and elsewhere - from friends who live in midtown - that line for rush tickets for Spring Awakening this weekend were so long, that they eventually ended up down and around the corner!  -And there's not that many rush seats available!  But, still, people kept lining up - I guess they were hoping that some people would give up waiting, and/or that they would then be the first in line when the rush tickets for the evening show went on sale.  The cause for all this hoopla (for lack of a better word at 3:10am): it was the first time Jonathan Groff was going to be out, and his understudy was going on for the first time.

And then there was "Team Tarzan"... And now "Team Blonde" - or whatever they're calling themselves... The "FANadus"... And the "Altar-holics" for Altar Boyz.

So, how did you spend your summer vacation?
-Well, I spent most of it camped out on the dirty sidewalks of New York City waiting for theatre tickets.

To some extent, I "appreciate" the devotion - even Lestat had it's devotees - but I don't think I was ever that "crazy" to want to camp out on the sidewalk, three or four or more times a week, to see a show.  -Although, I do remember waiting an hour at the box office of the Kennedy Center for the first performance of the 1st National Tour of Les Miserables.  -But we were only waiting because we knew when the house row was being released, so... ;)

I seem to remember finding Cherry Ripe bars at some funky variety/candy store in Los Feliz.  Maybe DR Cason will come across them.

Yes, it's the youngsters "adopting" the musical theater - groupies for every show, seeing shows ten, twenty times (parents must be very wealthy).  I find it weird and it's just turning theater into something that, for me, it shouldn't be.  Going to the theater was an event, a treat, something where you'd want to dress well and be respectful.  Movies were that way for me, too, but we all know that went to hell long ago, and now the Broadway movers and shakers are actively pandering to kids, just like the movies do.

As for standing ovations during the middle of the show, well... I'm trying to remember if I stood up after "Rose's Turn" last Wednesday.  I remember people standing at both the day and evening performances - moreso at the evening performance - but...  Well, now that I think of it, I think I did stand.  Although, only at the matinee and not at the evening show.  Or vice versa.

In any case... I'm very "stingy" with my standing ovations.  And I've had more than one person look down at me with that "Why aren't you standing up?" face.  But I also have no problem standing when I feel it is warranted and appropriate.

And, sadly, some shows now have certified stalkers.  I was talking to a doorman just last night, and he said they have three "problems" at this theatre.  And they're so problematic, that the security team at the theatre now scans the people waiting in line at the stage door.  And unless you're on "The List", you're not allowed backstage until the person you want to see comes out, sees you and brings you back personally.  -Apparently, these "problems" had done so much "research", that they were able to give the doorman info about the actors that got them through the stage door... and up to their dressing room.

OH!  And here's the truly scary part, the security staff had to start telling people in line that the actors would only sign show-related materials and merchandise - and they check to see what people are holding out to get signed.  Previously, someone had managed to get an actor to sign something - and that something was a fake legal document.

I remember Skip having seen your show AREA 51 (he went with your mutual friend Nina), which I think was in early 2000.  But to put your mind at ease

Oh, my mind's quite at ease already, thank you.  And it darts from subject to subject like a gazelle after a Red Bull.  Your Starfighter good fortune led me to reminisce about Skip, who was gracious enough to attend Area 51, and after talking about Area 51, I thought I'd put minds at ease: No, of course I don't think Fred & Skip or the always sui generis BK gave a single thought to my loony little trifle in writing their sci-fi shows.  In the wacky world of musicals, two adaptations of a poem about a wild party can appear in successive months and nobody bats an eye.  Well, maybe Jane Krakowski did, but she's always batting her eye.  Jose is right: it's how we choose to tell the tale.  I'm merely bemused and amused that three 2007 musicals by famous writers, Curtains, The Pirate Queen and The Glorious Ones are ever-so-faintly reminiscent of mine.  Not concerned in the slightest.

TOD:

I'm with DR JoseSPiano...I often sit [at the end] when others are standing, but if it is truly deserved, I have no problem standing.  I can't think of any performance so good that would cause me to stand in the middle of a show, and I agree that this would disrupt  the show.

I think many people stand at the end just so that they can SEE the curtain call.  And the effect has certainly become cheapened over the years.  Some say that people do so now on Broadway as a matter of course just to make themselves feel that the big bucks they've spent were worth it.

I have embarrassed a great many of my friends by refusing to stand with the masses at the end of a production.  That is especially true of the touring companies that come to the Paramount and the 5th Avenue Theatres in Seattle.  I'm sorry, but just because a show is touring the country doesn't mean that it is good.  Just as I learned whn I lived on the East Coast that not every show that plays New York is a winner.

Still I would much rather see people giving a show a standing ovation than watch the crowd use a curtain call as a way to get a head start to the parking garage.

I don't stand for every show although as David mentioned, sometimes I stand just because I want to see the curtain call (it's hell being 5'3"). Automatic standing ovations are on the same level as entrance applause in my book.

I was surprised at Brantley's review of Gypsy. Since Isherwood was there as well (I think Fred said that last week) perhaps they will run his review also.

Fred, I meant to ask yesterday but didn't get around to it. You don't have relatives from long ago in the music business, do you? Anthony is reading a biography of Victor Herbert (generously given to him by the lovely Larry Moore). In the beginning acknowledgements the author (in 1952 I believe) thanks a Fred Landau who was one of Herbert's conductors. Just wondering.

I think....and I used to be this age....some of the phenomenon that is the TOD...is the longing to belong to something.  And being a member of a group that 'adores' a show or a group of performers or sees a show dozens of times....in some way makes the success of that show or performer shine a little on you!

Except for the people DR JOSE mentioned, I think these people will move on with their lives...or at least other shows.  Unfortunately they do great harm to those in the audience who still think of theatre as THAT and not a fan club meeting.

All of the hooting and hollering and carrying on and ovations that are staged do tend to turn the performance into a high school auditorium presentation and the performers into students at Miss Ludie's dance recital.

I will never giving a standing ovation for a song during a show. That is ridiculous. For the concert series I see every year. Sometimes I stand and sometimes I sit depending on a performance. But it always seems to start in the same section. The people who sit around me never seem to stand, but that may be due to the fact that they have walkers or wheelchairs.

It's sort of cool this morning. We have a cloud cover, so the sun isn't being allowed to be blazing hot (yet). I guess we'll have more rain later today. It IS in the forecast.

Funny, with all the rain we've had, we're still in draught conditions. The paper this morning said that we'd have to have at least the remnants of a tropical storm to get us out of a minus situation.

I can remember participating in one standing ovation during a performance - "Who's That Woman" during the original FOLLIES.

Like others, I am very stingy with my standing ovations at the end of a performance, often to the irritation of folks I'm with. It shouldn't be an automatic thing, and I can say as a performer I don't really appreciate them when I know in my heart it was not a good show.

Good morning, all!  I have another chart on which I shall work today.  Beyond that, I have no plans.

I've been folowing this DR Noel-FJL correspondence and I will add to the posts this thought:
  1.  In 1971, when I still wanted to write musicals, I began collecting original Nancy Drew books to write a girl detective musical to be set in the mid 1930's.
  2.  Around the same time, I was reading commedia dell'arte scenarios for a commedia musical (incidentally, there have been a couple of commedia dell'arte musicals on and off-Broadway as well as  a Harlequinade in 1912's LADY OF THE SLIPPER and  a commedia sequence in THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE). There's even a commedia opera, THE LOVE OF THREE ORANGES, based on the 18th Century Gozzi scenario and Mozart contemplated an opera based on Carlo Goldoni's (Gozzi's commedia rival) commedia THE SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS!

As for stalkers, when I did LA CAGE two years ago (can it be THAT long ago?), we had a semi-stalker. A woman kept coming back to the show night after night and insisted on talking to some of us after the show every night. We'd come out after taking off make-up and costumes, and there she'd be eager to bubble over with her enthusiasm for the show. It was flattering at first but then became kind of creepy.

The weekend after we closed, I went to see the national tour of HAIRSPRAY which was coming through here, and there she was! I wondered if she didn't pick shows and just go night after night because she had nothing else going on in her life.

Well, they're starting to trickle in.  The reviews for the LuPone Gypsy that is.  (As opposed to more party guests.)  In any case...

The reviews are mostly very favorable, except for the NY Times, which is hard to classify.  I loved this production of Gypsy.  I think Brantley secretly did, too.  He said so many nice things about it, and about Patti, within his review.  I suspect he had such high expectations, and there was such good word of mouth from early previews, that it would have been difficult for him to be completely satisfied with it.

But I was.  :)  I'm going back again tomorrow.   ;D

TOD:

I've witnessed attempts over the years at mid-show standing ovations--some yahoo in the first row would stand and a couple of other yahoos here and there would follow suit.  But the last time I saw this happen, after Michael Cerveris had finished "Epiphany" in the SWEENEY TODD revival, just about half the orchestra section rose to their feet.  That was disturbing on a number of levels.

As far as end-of-show standing o's are concerned, I think DR Singdaw has hit the nail on the head--most people get up because they just want to see the curtain call with out being blocked by the yahoos who are standing.  At the prices of shows today, people want to squeeze every drop of the experience they can and no one wants to miss the last glimpse of the performers, no matter who they are.  As for myself, well I'm not going to stand for a touring company of LES MIZ, but since I know there is some funny staging in the curtain call for CURTAINS, I most probably will for that.

It's funny how standing o's evolved from the other annoyance of the 70's and early 80's--audiences standing up and leaving during the curtain calls.  How freaking rude that was!

Monday morning greetings!  Here I am at work...

TOD - I agree standing ovations are overdone, but often participate just to see the curtain call.  I also like to stay after a musical to hear the play-out music and applaud the orchestra.  So many people totally ignore the fact that music is even being played.

I never did get around in the 1970s to thinking about a Pirate musical - I still shudder at the thought -  because THE PIRATE I wanted to musicalize was the Lunts' comedy made into the Judy Garland-Gene Kelly-Cole Porter film but, in case anyone wants to "borrow" from me, I did consider as well:
  1.  a Feydeau farce musical
  2.  Anouilh's THIEVES CARNIVAL
  3.  BELL BOOK & CANDLE

I was taking the Feydeau idea from the Plautus idea for FORUM, I liked the stylized comedy of THIEVES CARNIVAL, maybe still my favorite Anouilh play after rING ROUND THE MOON, and my fear about a witch musical was that it was too close to HIGH SPRITS!

My favorite possibly-forced standing O was at a show where the ovation was very strong but not standing.  The curtain came down for a substantial while (maybe 20 seconds), so the applause stopped completely and the audience got up to get ready to leave.  Once most of the audience was standing to leave, many with their backs to the stage, they brought up the curtain again - and the audience, already standing, strated applauding again with coats in hand because we didn't know what else to do.

Thank you Miss Karen.
I'm sure it was just an oversight.  Perhaps to make up for it, BK will send you the lovely set of steak knives, which I understand is the newbie gift of the week.

Noel - When you say, "I'm merely bemused and amused that three 2007 musicals by famous writers, Curtains, The Pirate Queen and The Glorious Ones are ever-so-faintly reminiscent of mine," has this been true of any other year?  And do you believe any of these people saw or were aware of your work?

Not sure how I can make this any clearer.  I was commenting on a funny coincidence.  I don't think there's any chance any of those Tony-winning writers saw any of my shows.  Very few people of note (well, there's Skip and Mr. Sondheim) have ever seen any of my 12 produced musicals, which is why the exposure of NYMF is such an extraordinary godsend.  Takes me to a whole new level.

No, there's been no year like '07  :-*

I hope to see Haineslies and Kimlets Friday, September 28, 2007 @ 8pm; Saturday, September 29, 2007 @ 1pm; Sunday, September 30, 2007 @ 4:30pm; Wednesday, October 3, 2007 @ 4:30pm; and @ 8pm; or Saturday, October 6, 2007 @ 1pm at The Julia Miles Theatre, 424 W. 55th

As far as the groupies thing on B'way nowadays, I'm just puzzled.  Who are these kids and where are they getting their money?  If half the posts on All That Chat are true, these kids are seeing Spring Afakening every freaking night!  That is not appreciating theatre--that's obsessive masturbation.  From what I remember, the same thing happened with RENT the first year or so after it opened--the same claque of kids seeing it repeatedly who would sing along--out loud--not only with the songs but with the recitative as well.  I'm just glad that the brand of show that attracts these yahoos aren't the type of shows that I would go see a second time (or even a first.)

About ten years ago, there was a kid who posted regularly on rec.arts.theatre.musicals who incessantly rhapsodized about the talents of Debbie Gibson.  He was actually arrested for stalking her when she was doing BEAUTY AND THE BEAST on B'way.  Scary!

Positive mixed review indeed DR Jose.  I was lucky enough to see the AL version in London.  I truly believed her "Rose".  I've seen quite a few others try. It's such a balancing act and requires something truly special - not just a knock-out performance of the songs.  On film (despite the fact that I am not a fan usually) I wish Midler had got it right. I still prefer the flawed Ros. film.

I saw the Angela version when it was on Broadway - one of my fondest theater memories.  Maybe it was because I was very young, or because it was the first time I had seen Gypsy, but I loved it and think of it as the definitive Gypsy against which I compare all other productions.  That was the cast recording I always listened to - not the Merman version, simply because it was the one that I saw.

Anyway - back to the current version with LuPone. -- How nice to get to hear the amazing score played by a full-sized orchestra.  And the overture - arguably the greatest ever written.  I couldn't wipe the smile off my face through the whole thing.

Unfortunately, having worked Rent more times than I ever intended, I've had many an encounter with the theatre groupies. It's unsettling not only to me, but certainly to the performers, who often come out onstage to find people in the front row who are dressed in wild, ridiculous costumes of show merchandise (from which, sadly, my business benefits) if not costumes of the characters themselves! Yes, people do come to the show dressed as Angel, Mimi, Roger... My favorite was the guy who came dressed as Luther Creek as Roger. That's right...he was dressed as an understudy going on in a leading role. Now that's devotion.

I don't think I've ever given a standing ovation during a show unless the performance was incredibly good. I may have stood for Patti's "Rose's Turn," and if I did, it was certainly a merited ovation. Truly one of the most incredible moments I've ever had in a theatre. I've seen a lot of shows here - worked more of them - and a standing ovation in the middle of a show is a rare thing. I can't honestly say I've seen a lot of those since I've been here...

DR Julie: Color me jealous. I would much rather see GYPSY again tonight than work at my own show.

And now I'm off to the Hamptons for a day of fun...

This will be my first venture to the Hamptons. And I've lived here for nearly 6 years!

I have no desire to go to Fire Island. It's hard enough to be judged by gay men when you're fully dressed. Who wants the added pressure of having to look good in beachwear, too? There's just something seedy about it...

Today we're going to a rental house that my boss has rented for the summer. It has a private beach. La-ti-dah... She gets a rental house with a private beach and I didn't even make commission this week.

I would much rather see people giving a show a standing ovation than watch the crowd use a curtain call as a way to get a head start to the parking garage.

The undeserved standing ovation.  I think a lot of it has to do with what Stephen Sondheim said about it being connected to the high prices of tickets and that evening out at the theatre is so expensive that people want to think they have been to a significant event and thus they stand for everything.

I also think it has to do with crap like American Idol where they have started standing to applaud and whoop when anyone does a key change in the middle of their "aria".

Of the hundreds of things I've seen in the theatre, I doubt if I 've seen twenty things that deserved a standing ovation.

A standing ovation should be something spontaneous and uncalculated.

I was talking to someone who was telling me about the cast of a community theatre where the cast was all pissed off because they were not getting the standing ovation they felt they should have every night.  Sorry, but I have never in my life seen a comunity theatre production that deserved a standing ovation.  And when you come to think it's your natural due, sorry.

I also like to stay after a musical to hear the play-out music and applaud the orchestra.  So many people totally ignore the fact that music is even being played.

The playout music is often some of my favorite music in the show, and it's a shame people miss it. I always stay, too.

So many people left after SISTER ACT, THE MUSICAL after the curtain calls that I took my mom up to watch the players do the playout music (we had great seats, thanks to FJL!) and she really enjoyed seeing how things worked down in the pit.

Re: standing ovations at the end of a show.

I think the audience has grown to think it is the polite thing to do. I stand in order to see over those who have stood in front of me, plus I would feel rude if I did not stand. However, I only clap if I feel it is deserved. But my feeling is that if others enjoyed it enough to do a standing ovation, well, then that is a good thing. It really does not bother me.

I have not yet seen the standing ovation in the middle of a show, yet, I don't think. Of course I have seen the clapping and whooping when a particular performer comes onto the stage. Another thing that I think the audience has come to believe is the polite thing to do...and has been happening on "filmed before a live audience" television programs since forever.

The whooping and hollering does annoy me. It is bad enough at sporting events, and does not belong at the theater, in my opinion. But it is pry just a generational thing. People over the last 20 years seem to have been conditioned to do that and don't give it a second thought....and it isn't just the kids...the two people in their 50s next to me at Curtains did it when one of the performers (who they were related to) came out on stage.

But, times chance and you roll with the punches.

Good morning, HHW!

TOD:
I was always touched and appreciative when I was acting and we received a standing ovation. But I never thought it should be routine, nor do I now. That takes something away from it. Is this trend not a part of the attitude du jour of telling everyone "Good job!" when they've done nothing of any consequence?

I, too, frown on mid-performance ovations, as well as the can't-wait-to-get-outta-here rush to the parking garage.

The most moving standing ovation I've ever seen, (and I missed being there to witness it in person by one vote from the Academy when we were on the short list for THE INTERNATIONALE) was when Randy Newman FINALLY won an Oscar after being nominated something like 17 times. The orchestra stood up and gave him a standing ovation. I had never seen the orchestra do that before---it made me cry.

I know it's not a theatrical event but it was a moment of drama!

I'm also sure that a lot of these musicians play sessions for Randy. I've been on a soundstage when he was recording a score and it was obvious how much he was loved and respected by the musicians. He also kept them in stitches!

AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHAHAHA.

There, I feel better now.

Forgot to mention yesterday (and maybe someone else already posted), but the author of Dead Man's Cell Phone was yesterday's "Weekly Reader" on NPR (is her name Sarah Ruhl or something like that?).  Anyhoo, I found it most unseemly that she didn't have a single BK book on her "to read" list, and was instead concentrating on trifles like Ulysses and the complete works of Shakespeare.

I am thinking about buying an EXTERNAL DVD burner...drive thing...attachment device.

How do these things work?

Easy as pie, DR JRand.  They just connect through a USB port.  Then you might need to insert the CD that comes with it to install the drivers.

The drive will probably come with a copy of Nero or Roxio, but these are usually demo versions.  At some point you will want to buy the full feature version.

Also, some DVD burners come with LightScribe, with which you can burn labels directly onto LightScribe CDs and DVDs.  When I purchased my external DVD burner, I specifically looked for a model with this feature.  But after using it for over a year, my opinion of it is unenthusiastic.  It takes a least twenty minutes to burn a label, you need to download a plug-in to get good contrasts, and the labels are monochrome (not to mention that the LightScribe CDs and DVDs are pricier than regular discs.)  I rather just print my colorful paper labels.

My "new" HP computer came with LightScribe, and I, too, am underwhelmed.  It doesn't take that long to inscribe on this model (usually about 2-3 minutes), but the contrast is really poor.

DR JMK, you are probably burning them in "Draft" mode.  You should look to see if there is a print configuration to burn at "Best" mode.  Also, if you go to the LightScribe website, you'll find that there is a download that will allow for darker contrasts.

But in the end, it's still probably not worth the effort...

Now that's devotion....
Can you imagine the shock if this happened during Naked Macbeth!

Edi, moving story about Randy Newman’s ovation.

Many a time it has seemed Keith & I were the only two people not standing during an ovation.  It always makes me feel awkward as if I am being rude, however, the few times I stood simply to join the crowd I felt dishonest.

Ashland audiences seem to be very generous to the actors here.  If I am not standing, I am free to observe those who are, and must say they seemed enthusiastic to me.

...I have no desire to go to Fire Island. It's hard enough to be judged by gay men when you're fully dressed. Who wants the added pressure of having to look good in beachwear, too? There's just something seedy about it...
The trick is to come to Rehoboth Beach instead.  While RB is a gay resort town, it's mixed with the straight elements very well, a kind of co-habitation.  Part of what attracted der Brucer and myself to this town is how it has no gay ghetto, and is very well integrated.  So if you ever get tired of the competition of Poodle Beach (yep, that's what the predominantly gay section of the sand is called), all you have to do is wander a couple hundred yards northwards and mingle with the husbands and wives.

(Wander far enough north, and you find a predominantly lesbian section.  Only I don't think they've named their stretch of sand.  Strange.)

RUDE CUSTOMER DEPARTMENT -

As a change from working the Self Scan lanes, I was assigned the Express Lane instead.  Fifteen items or less.  Or at least that's the theory.

I had one customer who had something like eleven items.  This was no problem, but she had two items that needed to be checked, because the bar code was half-torn on one, and the other was a melon that I couldn't recognize and lacked a PLU sticker (PLU = Produce Look Up code).

This customer was being very nice about everything, and indeed appologetic, although it certainly wasn't her fault that there were problems.  Unfortunately the woman behind her had two containers of ice cream.  In a very pointed tone, Ice Cream Lady loudly said "I thought this was the Express Lane.  At this rate, my ice cream will be soup before I get it home!"

The very nice first customer was shocked, and muttered to the second customer that she didn't have to be so rude.

My business with the first customer concluded, and I turned my attention to the second woman, who informed me "I wasn't being rude, I have the right to get through the Express Lane quickly!"

I looked her in the eye, smiled gently, and in my most dulcet voice replied "Perhaps you could try the self-scan lanes next time?"

I have absolutely no idea why she gave me a glare that was intended to kill.

Normally, my one-liners with customers are prompted by happier circumstances.

For example, "One cent change, spend it wisely!" usually gets a chuckle.

When something doesn't scan properly and the customer (thinking themselves being original) says "Oh, that must be free!" I tell them with a straight face "I'm sorry, that's only true in Maryland."  They love that little bit of "gotcha".

The regular complaint with our credit card swiper is "Why can't these things all be the same?  They're all different!" earns the reply "That's by state law, sir/ma'am."  I've learned to smile and wag my eyebrows after saying this one - it's amazing how many people think I'm telling them the truth.

Many, many years ago, the Guthrie Theater did Shakespeare's History Cycle - Richard II, Henry IV and Henry V.

It was a big repertory company, with some actors playing starring roles in one play, and lesser roles in the other plays, so we got to see every actor's acting range. (Kind of fun, that.)

On selected days... Sundays, I think... they did the entire History Cycle in one day. Nine hours of theater, interupted by an hour for dinner.

THe last performance was one of those cycle days, and I went to see it, even though I'd seen each individual play. And it was spectacular. The actors got a standing ovation after the first play, and after the second play.

For Henry V, a single chorus usually comes on stage and says the lines.  The way the late, great Garland Wright staged it, every actor in the company was on stage as the chorus.  When the lights brightened and the audience saw the actors standing on stage, they all stood up, before the play even started, and gave them another standing ovation.  And then they got one at the end of the play as well.

But then, that was for nine hours worth of work on one day....

RE STANDING O.s,In Ann Arbor, with  the visiting RSC,at the end of Henry VI, 1,2,&3,f/b Richard III, there was something like a roar, then the s.o, but this was after 4  plays in three days;..... Sometimes if I'm seated in the front row , I'll clap with my hands held higher, so the cast will know I'm extra enthusiastic(if they're interested) The who-hoo-hooting, esp during a play, is just cringe-making.

Back to the costs of NYC lodgings:

DR Jose, and any other New Yorkers, please do let us know of any booking agencies or websites that you think we could trust for non-hotel accommodations.

Has anyone had any experience with

sublet.com (http://www.sublet.com)?

I've also posted an inquiry to

Manhattan Getaways (http://www.manhattangetaways.com)

but have not yet had a response.

Another (gasp!) drastic approach I've considered is to stay outside Manhattan and commute in.  Any insights?

DR Ginny, we folk who live here don't need such agencies!  Aren't there any tourist boards where Manhattan visitors discuss such things?

DR MBarnum - he was in the second Broadway show I ever saw - 40 years ago - Funny Girl, with Mimi Hines as Fanny.

I saw the same production. She was Streisand's replacement, and he was Sydney Chaplin's (who left the production fairly early as I recall; I don't think he and Barbra got along very well).

I thoroughly enjoyed HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. Everyone has grown up! I was SO shocked to see how tall Neville and Draco and Dudley had gotten! Wow!

Having read the entire book before I saw the film, I'm SO glad I did because I thought some things were just a trifle rushed in the film to speed things along, and reading the book allowed me not to feel like I was playing catch up.

Wonderful new characters (and actors playing them): Dolores, Beatrix, Luna.

I will enjoy revisiting this many times once the Blu-ray comes out at holiday time.

Had a nice meeting this morning, have packaged up everything that needed packaging and will shortly be on my way to the post office then to the two-thirty rehearsal, then to an early dinner meeting, then HOME, SWEET HOME, where I shall polish David's rewrites, and try to do the two he didn't get to.  Then it's more proofing, and then maybe I'll have time to watch a motion picture on DVD, albeit a short one.

So...

Once again, thanks for the Travel Vibes.

Of course, I think because I had mentioned that I had never really had a delay with Amtrak that that was why my train was delayed this morning. ;

But it was just an hour, and after the train left the station, there were no real slow downs except for one brief stop to let some other trains pass.  -And I only caught myself snoring once.  Well, maybe twice.  ::)

And, thankfully, my parents have become familiar enough with Richmond that they were able to get to the train station without getting lost to pick me up.

So...

DMV - 15 minutes wait; 5 minutes at the window to get my paperwork processed.

City Hall - No wait at the Personal Property Tax window.

Porter Street (a.k.a. where my car has been parked for the past couple of months) - I spent all but 30 seconds in my car, which was just enough time to move it to the other side of the street so that it would not get towed tomorrow morning due to the street cleaning.

...And with the way my schedule worked out, I'm not missing out on any gigs this week - I'm back in ACL this coming weekend, but I had nothing booked during the week.  And then when Steve tipped me off to the street cleaning, well... Timing is everything.

But I was.  :)  I'm going back again tomorrow.   ;D

Strange.)

I <heart> Rehoboth Beach... Dewey Beach... The Dunes.  When I was in high school, RB was the cool beach to go to.  And I went to a Catholic High School.  Yes, we knew there would be homosexuals there, but the beauty of RB overrode that "detraction".  ;)

At least half the time when I stand at the end it's because my view is completely blocked.  At 5' 2" (on a tall day) my view is frequently blocked even when the person in front of me is sitting.
I hope I get to New York again and meet you Julie. We can go to the theatre with Ben and Anthony.  I sometimes need to stand to see the curtain calls too!

Melbournian's tend not to give standing ovations unless the show or perfomance is really deserving. (Saturday night audiences are more likely to do so).  I certainly did not stand for a recent production of "Miss Saigon".

I had no problem standing for Barbara Cook's show here.

(A tale Woody says will warm the cockles of esteemed bk's heart)

While I was living in LA back in the 1970's I had season tickets to the Pantages which were the very front row, the very center seats. They did a run of HELLO DOLLY starring, wait for it....Carol Channing. Now I had seen a earlier run of her show, and knew about her curtain call shtick - after milking it for all she could, she started on a little speech, and then, as if noticing the audience for the first time,  interrupted herself and said, "Oh you poor dears, are you all still standing, please sit down.!"

Well, the show was over, the performance ho-hum, and these butt-cheeks were staying fixed! So with hundreds of devoted fans on their feet aroar, two men were very conspicuously still seated. The darling Ms Channing looked down from the stage and gave a wonderful Alexis Carrington look  - her best performance of the evening!

Poor Carol - not starring, just staring!

PS This was in my pre-Woody days.

Not to be a hick from Iowa or anything, but when you are visiting and not used to anything near the level of a Broadway show, a standing ovation seems warranted even if it may not seem so to someone who regularly goes to the theater.

I am not stingy with standing ovations and I don't apologize for that.  It is rare that I go to a show I do not thoroughly enjoy and I want to show my appreciation.  So, there you go. I have been known to be one of only a few standing and it hasn't bothered me a bit

Sherlock passed his test today & will be moving up a level, once the next level exists.  So far, two qualified dogs are not enough for a class.  The other dog is taking a break until the next class opens up.  Sherlock & I will continue in the current class.  Practice makes perfect, and while he passed, he is far from perfect.

DRJose, when puppies are born their eyes are a dark blue.  When the one eye turned brown, the other eye was still a beautiful dark blue.  Gradually with time, it has lightened considerably (we wish not as much as it has).  The outer rim is a darker blue & the rest varies in shades of light blue to almost white, depending on the light.

Just a reminder about another new episode of THE CLOSER coming up tonight at 9 p.m. on TNT. As usual, I can't wait!

I would be very suspicious of the broadcast times. Last week they said it was a to be an extended episode and would last 1 hour and 10 minutes - in fact, it lasted over 60 seconds more! (A fact I noticed when I played my DVR of the following Heartland and saw the last 60 seconds of the Closer - and a key minute it was!)

Tonight they have programmed a re-run of last weeks episode and have only scheduled it for one hour! So, unless they are going to show it virtually commercial free, it will run over, the new Closer will start late, and it will run over and people who are not set to record Heartland could well miss 11 minutes of the new Closer!

I will never giving a standing ovation for a song during a show. That is ridiculous.

Generally, I agree...but...

The Long Beach Civic Light Opera presented a special one day only AIDS benefit memorial concert performance of COMPANY on January 23, 1993. The event was dedicated to the memory of Michael Bennett, Larry Kert, and Fritz Holt. The show was hosted by Angela Lansbury, narrated by George Hearn and starring most all the original cast.

Elaine Stritch did get a standing ovation at the conclusion of The Ladies who Lunch - naturally Sondheim, Furth and Prince got a rousing ovation at their surprise appearance at the end.

Tomorrow I have an interview with a woman who is desperately looking for a job.  She was an interpreter for the hospitals in Chicago, but her family moved to Sioux City and that job is contracted to one company here so she is iced out of it.   I don't think she has any secretarial skills, so it may be a non-starter, but she is bi-lingual, so maybe I could keep her as a receptionist as the business expands :-)

Finally, a review of XANADU that pretty much mirrors my thoughts on the turkey in the latest NEW YORK magazine.  I've been feeling very much in the minority on this show - still do - but it was nice to have a critic in my corner.

Who'd have thought I would be smiling as I listened to track one from a CD by a singer I had never heard before - or more surpsingly, actually enjoying "A Cockeyed Optimist". (I didn't even like Mary Martin's version - but that's no surprise!).

Of course when someone starts their programme with a "Kismet" song - I'm more than likely going to be in a very receptive mood.

The ravishing has begun. It's wonderful to hear a smile in a singer's voice. Singing a funny song is one thing. Smiling a song is special.

DR FJL.  Please pass on my congratulations to your friend Milla.

Thanks BK.

Back from rehearsal and greeted with a problematic and potentially catastrophic e-mail regarding the fundraiser.  I'd met with the president of the college, he agreed to fund it, found a simple way of doing so (through some fund with a ton of money), and guaranteed it would happen quickly.  I've been all over him to get this done and the money into my account - to that end, I actually had invoiced them this morning (the person who he put me in touch with) - but he hasn't answered an e-mail from me in days, and when I arrived home I had an e-mail from the head of the theater department, forwarding me this guy's resignation letter - he's out of there as of 6/30.  I'm not sure if that's a mistake that should read 7/31 or what, but it's put everything I've done in jeopardy.  If I have to go out and try to find this funding a different way I'm doubtful it can happen and therefore my first act as president of this organization will be a catastrophe.  I'll speak to the woman to whom I sent the invoice first thing in the morning, but who knows what will be.  I will also press the head of the Foundation to help me if we need help, because I don't want this to fall apart.  The Foundation is already helping the Brain in a small way, but the event is not cheap in terms of its budget.  I'm really petrified now, and so all excellent vibes and xylophones would be greatly appreciated.

Well, after dealing with my roommate's party yesterday, not sleeping last night (on purpose), a six hour train ride this morning (and hardly sleeping on the train), Uncle Jojo needed a nap, some dinner and a nice hot shower.  Not necessarily in the order, but that ended up being the order.

Thanks for the Vibes for Steve's mother.  She was admitted last week to the hospital, and was moved to ICU earlier tonight.  I haven't gotten the specifics of her condition, but it's something she's been admitted for before.  Steve and his sisters are relatively calm about the situation since the Austins tend to be hardy, long-lived stock.  Hopefully, she'll be out of ICU in a few days, and then back home a few days after that.

DR Jane, I love animals, and have a cat named Bella.  She is an old lady now - just turned 17.  :o  Quite beautiful, and very loving.  I will try to attach a photo of her.

Nice!  I have a solid black cat named Ebonie.  I inherited her from my former housemate (Peter) who got married.  His then-soon-to-be-wife (now ex-wife ::)) was allergic to cats, so I kept the cat.  Peter got her from a pound and didn't know exactly how old she is.  Now, I think she's probably seven or eight years old.

Years ago, I remember reading in Dear Abby someone asking what to do when the audience gives a standing ovation, but the writer doesn't feel that it's deserved.  Abby said to stand but don't clap.  She gave some reason why you should stand, but I don't remember what it was.

I've never stood in the middle of a show.  I've never been in an audience where that's happened...at least, that I can remember.  Also, the only shows that I've performed in that got standing ovations have been a local annual AIDS benefit where the overwhelming emotion of the "cause" was what really generated the standing ovations.

George, that marriage didn't last long.

Umm...no.  They dated for about a year-and-a-half, got married in October 2005 and by March 2006, they had separated.  They tried to work things out (they both have "issues") but they really shouldn't have gotten married in the first place.  Their divorce became final less than a year after they got married. :-\

Actually, the cut some of last week's episode to fit it into the hour tonight. The 9 p.m. new episode started right on time as I said it would.

Big doggies love ice water in hot weather.....cold tongues cool their whole bodies, I think.  :P

Actually, the ice has nothing to do with it. Dogs' natural body cooling mechanism is evaporation from their tongues (they are not fortunate enough  to have sweaty arm pits) - which is why they pant so much when it's warm. Big bulky dogs like St. Bernards have a lot of mass to keep cool, so need to slober a lot!

Well, tomorrow is going to be good, but a bit scary.  If I don't decide to hire this one, I will call the other two who came to my office and asked me to hire them...weird business when people walk into your office and say "Hi I want to work for you" and if they don't work I will advertise.  Anyway, I give them credit for having the guts to walk in and ask, so ... This is scary because it will push the financial envelope, but necessary to get the work done and bring in more income.
Whew! Here I go....

Well, a big goodnight hug to you, DR JASON if you are still here.  I hope it was a fun day.  I've never gotten out to the Hamptons either, and would love to see the area sometime.

I just walked out into the back yard with Sugar, and the sky is a really interesting and almost eerie color right now....very much like a good MGM painted backdrop type sky!

Oh...the DVD I made plays on my computer but not on my DVD player....so I must do some more investigating.

JRand, It sounds to me like it did not "finalize," which is what it needs to do in order to be played on any other machine aside from that which created it.

There's a paint color for you: dust storm.

The people at NYMF have given us another day to figure out exactly what we're doing, so we'll know for sure tomorrow whether the production of Last Starfighter will be part of NYMF this year.

And of course, you have to watch what you say when you have house seats - you never know who's sitting near you.  :)

And not just in house seats. Woody and I were making "appreciative" comments about John Barrowman in "Puting It Together" - during intermission, his most understanding Mother, seated behind us, offered us a hanky to wipe off the drool.

Well, we have probably had all the storm we are getting tonight. Still windy, but the lightening is on DR MusicGuy's side of town now. It sprinkled just enough to dampen part of the sidewalk but not wet it all.

Back from A Night at the Operetta at Town Hall, and just checking in.  The evening featured about a dozen performers who performed songs from musicals that could be classified as operetta.  Milla sang a number in the first act called "Giannini Mia," and then joined with the entire cast for the finale, "Toyland."  She sounded great!  Scott Siegel announced from the stage to the whole audience that Milla had a new CD out.

I might not be able to contain myself to just two visits, either.

Ah, I believe that shot is from the long-aborning Limelight, (one of) the Charlie Chaplin musical(s) when it was presented up at New York Stage & Film.  I was up there that summer with Dangerous Beauty, and Luther was in the dorm room next to mine.

It was also presented, with Luther, as one of the NYMF shows last year, called Behind The Limelight.  It was actually my favorite NYMF show last year, with The Tragic and Horrible Life of the Singing Nun being my other favorite.

I watched the last 10 minutes and already caught one deleted scene - the one with Simple's corpse in the jail - they go from the phone call awaking Brenda right to Gabriel entering her office  the next day (40 secs cut).

CLOSER SEASON 2 SPOILER ALERT:

I wish I'd been home in time to watch and see what else they cut. It's funny that they cut this particular scene, because last season, Episode 3 I think, "Slippin'"---about the 3 teenagers shot in the car---she interrogated the valet and he went to jail. I was cutting the promos from dailies and there was a scene where the valet hangs himself in the same manner and Brenda and Gabriel visit the jail and see the scene. (He may have apologized to his mother, too, I'll have to check).

When I saw this scene in "Ruby", I figured that they still liked the idea of this scene las year and now they were finally able to do it. But I guess it was still expendable after all.
