Todays notes referenced "open arms and legs akimbo".

Here we have Chinese washstands didymous:

DR Ginny - as far as the modem thing:

You need to have a cell plan that includes an Internet data component and that allows "linking."  Then it's simply a matter of connecting your phone to your laptop via a USB cable, and technology does the rest!  :)

Last night Cilla asked

Ok, what would be better the 2 hour cruise or the Staten Island Ferry?

Well, the ride on the Staten Island Ferry takes less time than the cruise. It's about a half hour each way so you have around an hour (give or take a few minutes). If it's not done at either rush hour (morning or evening) it's a nice, relaxing ride. You do have to get down to the terminal on the Number 1 train (I believe it runs down there during the week) so that will add time to your trip. If you do take the train downtown remember to sit in one of the first five cars.

I've never done the 2 hour lower Manhattan cruise but I hear it's quite nice. You see more than you do on the SI Ferry (the Brooklyn Bridge, South Street, and other areas) and it's a large enough boat that if it's a full cruise you're not crammed in.

I've done the 3 hour Circle Line several times, and there's a lot that you go by that lacks a certain glamor, and the entertainment value of this varies based on the ability of your tour guide at being a raconteur (sp?).  But some of the views when you get around upper Manhattan are breathtaking, and the overview of the city is fascinating even if there is some down time here and there.  And during the occasional down time during the trip, it's just a lovely, peaceful ride.  Cilla, i think you'd actually enjoy the 3-hour tour at some point when you're not trying to cram in as much active fun stuff as possible.

But the 2 hour tour sounds like it's lots of the points everyone wants to see when they come to NYC and may have a limited time for touring.

OK, I wasn't any help on the question you asked.  But it was a post!

I'm sorry, but I think there is something rather unnatural about the ultimate 60s counter-culture symbol, Peter Fonda; selling music CDs in infomercials.

Good morning, all!  Today is moving day!!!!!!!!

I'm going to head down to the office around noon to run any errands we need to do or to finish up any odds and ends.  Between 2 and 4, the movers are showing up to pack the truck and head to our new location.  After 5, we move into the new space.  It's my current understanding that the former occupants are indeed out but some of their belongings are still in the space.  My goal after our baggage is in the office is to unpack my desk and help with whatever needs done.  I will be E&T most of the day.

Tomorrow, I will come in and continue the unpacking, then run over to NYPL for some newspaper research.

TOD:  This painting, "Umbrellas in the Rain" is my current obsession.

I've seen so manty paintings, I can't really remember which ones I like the best,  I would suspect it is anything by Turner.

My favourite museum of all time was the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden, which I saw for the last time on my last trip to London back in November.  It has since been closed.  Despite an effort by the theatrical community of London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, under whose province it fell, felt that it could afford to keep it open and, of course, the government did nothing to help.

The Vickie and Al  is also a great museum.  And there is none greater than the British Museum.  One of my favourites, however, is the British Library, where one can see items of great literary significance like the Magna Carta, Gutenberg Bibles, Scott's diary, and bits of Dickens and Carroll and Joyce and other great masters of literature.

I've always had a fondness for the Cincinnati Art Museum up in Eden Park.

My favorite artist is Van Gogh -- Cafe Terrace at Night, Country Houses, some of his Iris paintings, Starry Nights, etc. etc. etc.

Monet -- Impression Sunrise (good taste DR Edi!), etc. etc., etc.

Michelanglo -- The Sistine Chapel (maybe doesn't count since you can't hang it on a wall, but it was his canvas...)

Salvador Dali -- I don't know that I'd ever want to buy his stuff for my house -- but I find his stuff whimsical, intriguing and interesting to study/look at -- Vesliges Ataviques, etc.

My favorite museum is the Witte in San Antonio, Texas -- mainly cause I grew up haunting that one -- strictly that personal connection because it's not some big fancy one.  When people came to visit, it was on the sight-seeing list to take them to, right up there with the Alamo. Artwork, collections -- and they had this jewel collection -- and this one giant diamond on display in a case back in this dark room where it glowed under this light. My cousin Charlie and I always plotted and planned how someone could steal it -- our plan was very elaborate, involving a helicopter, coming down a rope, crashing through this giant vertical window outside the room, trying to beat the alarm and closing door, etc. -- ala James-Bondish-style. A while back someone walked in, jammed a lawn chair in the door (like those chain ones that close off stores in a mall after hours), smashed the case, and walked out with it -- calmly, cooly ... and successfully.  Most uncreative (my cousin and I thought!) -- and disappointing to think that giant diamond gleaming in the dark was gone after all those years ...

...and disappointing to think that the security guard didn't wonder about someone carrying a lawn chair around inside a museum...guess he was expecting some wild scheme like Charlie's and mine ...

Of course, we had our Unseemly Trivia Contest question - and, as it turns out, I didn't stump our usual panel of regular players, which astonished me.  Here was the question:

This season produced one huge musical hit, several other musical hits, a lot of musical misses, a few hit plays, and a lot of flop plays - in other words, business as usual.  This particular flop play at least eked out a modest run, even though it was never heard of again.  It was by a well-known and popular playright, who was also a well-known and popular screenwriter of some classic films.  It was directed by a well-known director.  In the cast was an actor who'd recently appeared in a classic musical and who would go on to play a memorable role in a film version of a Broadway musical.  Also an actor who would go on to have a diverse film career, appearing in several classic motion pictures.  Also in its cast were a male and female actor who would have an interesting connection years later.  Also in the cast was a young actress who would have a semi-successful career in movies (she appeared in at least one classic by a hugely popular film director), and would then star in a beloved television series opposite a beloved television star.  Finally, another actor in the cast would have legendary status doing something other than acting.

So:

Name the play and its author.

Name the play's well-known director.

Name the actor who'd recently appeared in a classic musical and  would go on to play a memorable role in a film version of a Broadway musical and name his role in that film.

Name the actor who would go on to have a diverse career in films, and name at least two of the classic films he appeared in.

Name the male and female actors who would go on to have a very interesting connection many years later.

Name the young actress who would go on to a semi-successful film career, name her classic film and the hugely successful director, and name her beloved television series and her co-star.

Name the actor who would achieve legendary status for something other than acting.

And here are the answers:

The Cold Wind And The Warm/S.N. Behrman

Harold Clurman

Timmy Everett/Tommy Djilas in the film of The Music Man

Eli Wallach/The Magnificent Seven/The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly or many others

Maureen Stapleton and Vincent Gardenia - Miss Stapleton starred in the TV film Queen Of The Stardust Ballroom, and Mr. Gardenia starred in its musical version on B'way.

Suzanne Pleshette/The Birds/Alfred Hitchcock/The Bob Newhart Show/Bob Newhart

Sanford Meisner became a legendary acting teacher

Our high winners were Dan the Man, FJL, Jrand, and JMK.  We put their names into our handy-dandy Electronic Hat, which chose at random Dan The Man.  So, if he will send us his address, he will receive a sparkling prize (and our past two winners will receive theirs this week, too).

As for the Topic of the Day...

Favorite Museum: The Art Institute of Chicago, with the Clark up in Williamstown, MA, a very close second.

I did explore the National Gallery (both the East and West wings) in DC a couple of times, but I always found their regular holdings on the "safe" side.  However, since they always had a bunch of special exhibitions, and hosted a couple of traveling exhibitions throughout the year, that always kept things interesting.

DR singdaw - Well, I couldn't find the recipe on my computer, however, I did find this similar on the net.  Maybe once DR Tomovoz awakens Down Under, he can post Colin's version.  But in the meantime...

From OzeVillage.com.au

For the Cake:
2 medium oranges
200g butter
1 cup caster sugar
4 eggs
2 cups plain flour
1 cup ground almonds
1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1 cup buttermilk
2 teaspoons vanilla essence

For the Syrup:
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons   marmalade

Preheat the oven to 180ºC and butter a 24cm non-stick, springform cake tin.

Wash the oranges and place the oranges in a saucepan of water. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for 1 hour. When cool, puree the oranges in a food processor until smooth.

Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, then add eggs one at a time, and beating well after each addition. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, ground almonds, slivered almonds and bicarbonate of soda.

Add half the flour mixture to the creamed butter mixture, then add half the buttermilk, mix well. Repeat, using all the ingredients, then add the orange puree and vanilla and mix gently.

Pour the mixture into the prepared cake tin and bake at 180ºC for 60 minutes. The cake is cooked when it is golden brown and bounces back when gently pressed in the centre.

Meanwhile, make the syrup. Heat the sugar and juice together stirring all the time to dissolve the sugar. Bring to the boil and cook for 5 minutes. Add the marmalade and stir to dissolve. Spoon or brush the syrup over the cake while still in the tin. Remove the cake from the tin and serve with some clotted cream or rum and raisin ice cream.

The oranges are boiled whole, then put in the "robo-coup" whole, seeds, rinds and all.

Great DVD choices for DR RLP.  What will you watch first?

These days, DR SINGDAW, the Queen's ultimate weapon reminds me of those $10 outdoor tents you can buy for the lawn.....but it was nicely decorated....as were MOST of the Vesusians themselves.

I put in the first disc of EIGHT SIMPLE RULES today.

I have to admit I NEVER watched this show when it came on ABC (beginning in 2002). After watching about six episodes thus far, I think I was right to have skipped it. John Ritter plays father to three bratty children (high school age). The children's attitudes (particularly the girls) and smart-aleck backtalk are such an anathma to me that it's hard to enjoy anything humorous that happens to find its way into the stories.

And his bumbling cluelessness as a father (supposedly wife Katey Segal did the rearing of the children before going back to work leaving him to be the primary caregiver) is really irritating.

Just my luck. They filmed 28 episodes for the first season (at a time when most shows were doing 22 episodes).

Sometimes things are so bad, they're good!   :)

You're right, and DANTE'S COVE is a prime example of that!.

Was anyone here a fan of EIGHT SIMPLE RULES when it ran for three seasons? Of course, after RItter died after a few episodes into Season 2, they brought in James Garner, and I'll bet he was a more no-nonsense father figure than Ritter is in the show.

Maybe a fan can help me understand the attraction of these really spoiled, off-putting kids and the wishy-washy parents who allow such disrespect.

Or is that the way families are in the 21st century? (Admittedly, I wouldn't know. That's why I'm asking.)

I hear you, DR MATTH.   It is a different world in many ways.

Three people told us that they had a toy drum we could use.....I wanted to buy one on EBAY two weeks ago....but the director said Oh, No.....we have one.

And of course....not one of the three people can "find" theirs.  So here we are - too late really to count on an online delivery for an opening a week from Thursday....

I went to a toy store today.  No drum....and not many things that I would call toys.

If any DR hasn't been to a toy store recently.....take a trip on the wild side.

Hello, all...

Well, I know I just got here, but it's time for me to go. Tonight is the 4th anniversary of Q's opening, so I'm hoping we'll be sold out and quite busy. After the show, I will be attending the after party (hopefully joined by a certain DR who is currently cleaning his room). I will do my best to get some pics.

In the meantime...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AVENUE Q!!

Jrand,  the only theatre I did this summer was in my capacity as a board member of Actors' Guild of Lexington.  We started a summer Shakespeare at Equus Run, a vineyard here in Central Kentucky, about 12 miles outside Lexington and near where I live.  Our inaugural production, LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST, exceeded our first year's expectations and goals and we'll be doing two shows next year.  I did not act in this production, only served as advisor and general cheerleader.

I'm currently beginning to gear up to play Claudius in a production of Hamlet at Actor's Guild in the fall.

On the Broadway show front, Sam said Legally Blonde and Curtains look good but it's entirely up to me.  I am seriously considering ACL.

OK, gang...I could use some serious help here. ...Sam is 19 and this will be her very first Broadway show. She doesn't want to go to Wicked (Her words "No, I really don't care about Wicked") She loved the movie Rent and knows every word, so there is that, but I've seen Rent way too many times and would like to find a show she can watch and experience something new, not something she already knows. ....HELP!!!!!

My options at this point are
A Chorus Line - considering that she loved Rent, she may like something with a little substance to it
Legally Blonde - which could be fun
Curtains - she wouldn't mind seeing "Niles"

I'm cool with seeing any of them again. This would be a Saturday, probably a Saturday night after a day of sight seeing.

I had a goofy thing happen today.  I got a call from my "DEX" representative, she called on my cell phone and made what was really an initial contact.  I told her I had already met with my "DEX" representative and he was working on a lay-out for my yellow pages ad.  She didn't believe me, so I told her the name, number etc, and told her that I had made an initial contact back in May or June and when I received no response I called again. He responded and we met 3 weeks ago and did the whole lay out.

She was really snippy about it. Tonight the male rep called.  He asked me about it and I told him the same thing. I knew what happened when this whole thing started, but since the female didn't respond for - let's see 6 weeks or so after I called, I don't have any sympathy for her.  I waited about 3-4 weeks after leaving a message for her to contact him.  In my book, you snooze you lose.  He said they are sorting out who should have my account, I hope it's him.  He did his job, she didn't

DR Cillaliz - There's no way you - or Sam - could squeeze in two shows while you're in town?  -Well, other than the NYMF ones.  ;)

ACL is in good shape, however, after a day of sight-seeing, sitting down for two hours and 10 minutes straight may not be the most comfortable thing in the world.  An intermission may be your friend, so to speak.

However, ACL is a "performer's show", so...  But LB is fun too.  As is Curtains.

-I'm not helping, am I?  ;)

*If it does helps, Legally Blonde and Ave Q have shows Sunday nights too - depending when you're leaving, or what other shows you have on your schedule already.  ACL and Curtains have single-show Sundays.

Here's the thing, assuming all is on time, we will arrive at 1:30 pm Friday, make our way to the hotel and check in.  We will see Starfighter Friday Night.  Sam wants to sight see, so I thought I'd leave Saturday - day open for some of that - and some relaxing and then do a Broadway show Saturday Night.  Sunday day would be free for whatever and Sunday night is The Brain.   I really don't want to do two shows in a day. It's her first trip to New York and I know she wants to go sightseeing.

SAVING GRACE once again had a jumbled sense of storytelling which isn't aided by the intrusions of that angel who swoops down at inopportune moments. And I find the dialog very hard to follow. Hunter's mushy Southern accent along with others who mumble or speak rapidly I find confusing.

We had the same problem.  Half way through Keith said he couldn't take it anymore & we turned the show off.

We really wanted to turn it off with the opening scene.  Was that really necessary?  The message of what they were doing was fine, we didn't need to see it for the next 15 minutes.

I've never done this before, but I had to leave work early. I have a "laundry related injury" and was lucky enough to be able to see my chiropractor. (He only practices a few hours a week)

After injuring my back, I really shouldn't have hauled heavy baskets of laundry, and a huge heavy box, but at the time I didn't realize that I had done any damage. I just thought my back was sore from bending over a table, folding clothes.

I couldn't sleep very well last night---there was no position that was comfortable.

So...adjustment, ice, Aleve. It's hell getting old!

So far, the numbers are good for GRACE. It will be interesting to see if it gets renewed. Poor HEARTLAND is a goner, I'm afraid.

I have a wonderful chiro---Greg went to him when he did something similar to what I did. Dr. Z was recommended by one of our clients who went to at least a dozen chiros. This was the only one who could help her (she was in a terrible car wreck) so we thought that was a good recommendation. He doesn't use much force, just little guns that tap things back into place.

This seems to be a pulled tendon and is inflamed, so it may not help but I haven't been in so long (maybe last year?) that I figured I was overdue anyway.

Dr. Z helped me tremendously when a jackass ran a red light and totalled my car...and my neck. Even then I went to work after the wreck, while the guy who hit me (whose huge car wasn't even damaged) decided to miss work and take a ride in an ambulance.

I had never been in a wreck before. Now I know I should have gone to the Dr. immediately instead of getting a ride to work. Oh well...I just felt so lucky to be OK at the time that I didn't think about what that meant, insurance-wise later...

The most "pleasant" thing about the wreck was all the cars having to dodge my car (they couldn't see that the other side of it was collapsed) screaming at me to move my car! People can be such jerks sometimes.

OK...I'm in pain and crabby...

I'm guessing we will be able to reserve them tomorrow and the great unwashed will have to wait until Sept. 1st.

Now I want to see it, just to know what happened. Oh, if only I had stayed home and watched TV instead of spending the evening at the laundromat!

LOL-Let me know what you think.  It isn't like the opening of the first episode, which was more graphic than we needed it to be, unless I suppose you are a fan of Holly's body ;D

Ginny, if you go to the NYMF website, there is a place to click for tickets. Right now it doesn't let you do anything, but I'm guessing tomorrow it will.  I think you just log in and it will let you "purchase" how ever many "free" tickets you have coming to you for your membership.

LOL,  A 46 in Women's clothing would be MUCH MUCH MUCH bigger than I am....I didn't take it that way at all.  I actually think they are giving bigger clothes smaller size numbers so that you feel good and buy them...cynic that I am

I was at a trunk show once (where you order clothing made-to-order based on samples, ie, the "trunk") and was asked my size. I said that I was a size 6. "A small 6 or a large 6?"  I suppose every woman can be a size 6, as long as there are plenty of variations!

Not only if you snooze you lose, but why would any company want a rep on an account where she had already loused up? Plus you said she was snippy. Doesn't speak well for the company at all. If it were me, I'd tell the company I didn't want her. Just my opinion, of course.

Edi, you may want to try the homeopathic remedy Arnica. I was up in Quebec several years ago and slipped on some stairs and strained my ankle. Fortunately, I was able to put ice on it almost immediately (the stairs were to a little grocery store, which carried bags of ice). I also had a tube of Arnica in my purse. I took one dose then, and another that evening. I had to fly home the next day. I was absolutely amazed that I was able to walk without any pain at all. I was flying out of Toronto and they don't have a moving walkway. I was on my feet quite a lot, but with no problem.

Arnica comes in a cream or pellets (tiny pills). It's wonderful stuff. Available at health food stores.

Not sure whether the Grant thing will happen or not, which is infuriating, frankly, as we discussed this last Friday and this was the time he could do it and I cleared my sched.  He'll be done in a half-hour with what he's doing, but I know him well enough that when it gets to be this hour he gets cranky and tired and I am NOT going to have that pressure on me nor am I going to speed through, because when we do these fixes I want it to be the last set we do, and if he's just speeding from fix to fix without checking the rest of the page to make sure nothing's been screwed up, it's not going to work.  On the other hand, I don't know when else I'm supposed to do this prior to my trip.

DR Cilla, if Sam is 19 and loves RENT, why not let her go to SPRING AWAKENING alone. I know you didn't much care for it, and you could go to LEGALLY BLONDE on your own. Or is it important to you both that you go to something together.

Excuse my butting in, but I'm just trying to match up a previous good experience with something comparable.

I just can't see someone who likes the RENT music would be interested in more standard Broadway fare like A CHORUS LINE, CURTAINS, or LEGALLY BLONDE.

I began my evening finishing the remaining episodes on disc 1 of EIGHT SIMPLE RULES. Either I'm getting used to the bitchy daughters, or they weren't quite as obnoxious in the last three or four episodes on the first disc. I still find the forumla for the show strained and rather weak, but I guess I can see why the show pulled in enough audience its first year to get renewed. I guess many parents do have to deal with rebellious teens. I just find these teens very off-putting.

Oh, I'm sure ALL those choices are VERY entertaining. I was just trying to equate theater music that she found enjoyable with something in the same vein. But if she's OK with more the more traditional Broadway sound (I'm currently listening to the LEGALLY BLONDE cast album in my car), go for it!

Thanks for the suggestion Matt. I thought about Spring Awakening for her, but she said she wants something funny and fun, that is definitely NOT Spring Awakening. She likes all kinds of music. She  performs standards and lots of musical theater music. She picked Legally Blonde,  and is very excited to see it. I do appreciate your input though

I'm back from the Q-Do!  And what a Do it was!  They held it at Dave & Buster's at Times Square.  Free food - sliders, mini-pizzas, fried chicken tenders, etc.  Free drinks/booze.  And D&B Power Card with 75 credits on it!  Needless to say, DR Jason and I got a little "ticket happy", but we had a wonderful time.  And I had a great time hanging out with some of my "theatrical neighbors", and a bunch of us even shared a cab back uptown.  Alas, I don't think either of us took any pictures, but a photographer from BroadwayWorld.com and Playbill.com (I think) were there, so... We may be in the background.  -And it was especially nice to see almost all the original cast of Q come to the party too.

DR elmore - First of all, it's nice to hear that the move was accomplished today, and I hope you don't that many aspirin and/or pain-killers come the morning.  ;)

And I hope that any water damage to your apartment is minimal.  Very minimal.
